Jurors of the 2020 AIA Nevada Service Award AIA Nevada 1131 S. Casino Center Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89104 RE: Nomination for EV&A Architects for the 2020 AIA Nevada Firm of the Year Dear Members of the 2020 AIA Nevada Service Award Jury, It is my honor to nominate EV&A Architects for the 2020 AIA Nevada Architecture Firm Award. Founded in November 2006 by President & CEO, Ed Vance, FAIA, NCARB, EV&A is a full-service commercial, healthcare, and hospitality architecture and interior design firm. They have received 25 professional industry awards and have grown to 19 professionals with seven registered architects and one interior design professional while under the leadership of Edward Vance, FAIA, 2019 Chancellor of the College of Fellows and Candidate for AIA President-Elect for 2020/President in 2021. EV&A has become a premier firm in Nevada through a critically intentional focus and unparalleled devotion to team, client, and ultimately the firm's work. The cumulative result is a diverse body of work widely recognized for design excellence and a nurturing practice model thoroughly committed to service to the Institute, our community and, most importantly, to the next generation of architects. The success of EV&A is backed by strong leadership, consistency, and outstanding performance by all. The firm’s work is sophisticated, exquisite, and critically regional—all simultaneously—and demonstrates highly developed skill and expertise, which is visible through each project from master planning and site layouts to the most intricate interior detail. Each of EV&A’s design solutions respond to context and time seemingly effortlessly all while expertly addressing scale and materiality. Ed Vance’s commitment, dedication, and service to the American Institute of Architects is truly unsurpassed, yet he has found a way to also build an exceptional model of practice. Ed has advanced the profession in many ways, and within his own firm, it is clear that he has mentored and developed a highly functioning team of architects and design professionals capable of transcending his leadership. EV&A is also highly active within the community and at the UNLV School of Architecture. His contributions to the architecture profession in our state and in elevating our stature nationally as Chancellor of the AIA College of Fellows ensures that Nevada design firms and those of the Western Mountain Region have a ‘seat at the table’ in shaping our profession for the future. I can think of no other firm more deserving of the 2020 AIA Nevada Firm of the Year Award, and I hope that you will agree, and honor the team at EV&A with this well-deserved recognition. Respectfully,
Dwayne R. Eshenbaugh, AIA President, AIA Nevada

5.3 Aristocrat Technologies Corporate Offices Nestled quietly on the desert floor near the foothills of the Spring Mountains, this pair of three-story office buildings are home to one the world’s leading gaming technology companies. Developed by The Howard Hughes Corporation, Aristocrat Technologies relocated their operations to this twelve acre site to improve freeway access and visibility while allowing for the continuous expansion of their businesses. Re-evaluating internal adjacencies for their teams resulted in a more creative environment for better collaboration and efficiencies. The pair of buildings bookend around a landscaped
central plaza area designed for staff gatherings while providing a clear sense of arrival and good place making. The design team’s primary goal was to create a unique and identifiable design esthetic to reflect and reinforce the modern design vernacular that has become synonymous with the technology company. The project’s exterior design features are replete with shading elements on and around the building’s common areas, providing welcome relief from the desert’s intense sun during the summer months.

5.6 Magnolia Bluffs Sited just below the historic Roth Hill in Natchez MS, Magnolia Bluffs Casino was built over the Mississippi River to comply with State’s strict gaming regulations. The project is supported on nearly fifty steel piles giving patrons the feeling that they are floating on the river providing a real connection to the site often overlooked in typical casino designs. Utilizing locally produced materials and taking cues from the local vernaculars in the area, the design team collaborated with the Natchez Historical Society to recreate an early 20th century cedar mill
that had been located here nearly a century before. A municipal pedestrian river walk winds itself around the building’s riverside perimeter providing access to the casino’s “Back-Porch” amenities complete with fire pits and stunning views of the Mississippi and her majestic sunsets. Supplanting this project within an established and historically recognized neighborhood was an intricate process. The design team worked closely with the Natchez historical commission, held public workshops, and facilitated open houses throughout the design process.

5.7 Freeman Headquarters When the Freeman Company decided to consolidate its administration and distribution facilities throughout the valley, they commissioned EV&A Architects to design a new and efficient campus project that reflected the increasing collaborative culture of the company that has been producing expositions, conventions, corporate events and exhibits for nearly a century. It was at the forefront of the design concept to express the stature of this 81 year old company while maintaining the appearance of its cutting edge business. The Freeman Company’s new Las Vegas headquar-
ters has become the firm’s flagship facility nationally. Completed in 2009, the project skillfully blends a 3-story 90,000 SF office building with a 300,000 SF distribution center allowing team members to efficiently conduct business with their co-workers and their clients. A three story atrium brings natural light into the “Seam” of the building while an array of roof top skylights bathe the distribution center during the day saving significantly on energy costs annually.

314 South Water Street, Henderson, NV 89015 August 25, 2020 Members of the Selection Committee AIA Nevada 401 S 4th Street, Suite 175 Las Vegas, NV 89101 RE: 2020 AIA Nevada Architecture Firm Award - EV&A Architects Nominee Members of the Selection Committee, It is with great honor and respect that I support EV&A Architects for the 2020 AIA Nevada Architecture Firm Award. I am a peer of Ed Vance and for over two decades as a colleague, competitor, and friend, I have witnessed the firm's transformational leadership, passionate services and limitless advocacy within and for the American Institute of Architects at the local, state, regional and national level. I have been fortunate to serve with many talented architects with the Institute, and I can unequivocally state that EV&A Architects led by Mr. Edward A. Vance FAIA is one of the finest firms for their approach to practice, service, and impacting the professional experience of students and emerging architects. The firm is a very successful practice in Las Vegas, no small feat in and of itself, while simultaneously dedicating countless hours toward successfully serving and advancing the Institute. When Ed Vance was a national representative of our chapter and region, he put boundless energy to craft advocate, and implement initiatives and special projects with the Institute that have more strongly unified and aligned individuals and components. His leadership has also placed architects and architecture more soundly at the forefront of policymakers and the public. When I served as one of Nevada's champions for the AIA 150 Celebration, Ed played a vital role as committee chair and in organizing our 24-hour Town Hall efforts. The results were so well received by our legislature that Nevada State Senator Steven Horsford reached out to AIA Nevada to help investigate solutions to diversify the Nevada economy. Ed stepped forward, offering to lead the AIA Nevada task force as Chair. Through his efforts, the book Envisioning Nevada's Future was published. This volume has helped state leaders craft a framework for future legislation that is based soundly in AIA values of sustainability and creating livable communities. This endeavor simply would not have been successful without Ed's tireless commitment, enthusiasm, and public advocacy skills. Other examples of Ed's significant contributions include creating and authoring websites, directories, newsletters, awards programs, committees and books that unify and expand our membership and celebrate milestones for the Institute and its professionals. In addition, he has mentored countless students and emerging professionals through his lectures, presentations, YAF participation, IDP leadership, NCARB, advice, counsel and practice. Ed's commitment to the AIA is far from complete. To further his commitment and dedication to the Institute he has announced his candidacy for the AIA 2022 presidency, in an effort to help move the AIA forward in a positive direction. EV&A Architects with Ed Vance at the helm is worthy of the 2020 AIA Nevada Architecture Firm Award. Regards,
j ¡1 J. Windom Kimsey FAIA

AIA Nevada Distinguished Service Jury September 1, 2020 c/o AIA Nevada 1131 S. Casino Center Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89104 Dear AIA Nevada Jury Members, As Executive Director of both the AIA Las Vegas and AIA Nevada Chapters of the American Institute of Architects for the past twenty‐six years, I am honored to support the nomination EV&A Architects for the 2020 AIA Nevada Firm Award. The culture of any successful architecture firm depends upon the principal and the values and leadership he or she provides for that firm. Edward A. Vance, FAIA established EV&A Architects in 2006, and through vision, dedication and a profound love of the profession has directed its course to become recognized as an exemplary firm throughout the country. With a unified commitment to creating quality projects for their clients, supporting and advancing the profession of architecture, reinforcing and promoting the importance of the AIA on the local, state, regional and national levels, and joining with civic leaders and organizations to build stronger more resilient communities in Nevada, EV&A has become exceptional example of a great architecture firm. Grounded in the profession and in service to the AIA, EV&A supports and encourages staff members to take an active role on all levels of the Institute, and to assist in this the firm pays all AIA dues on their behalf. Consequently, the firm is one of the most dependable resources for volunteers and committee members for providing AIA programs and events. As one example, when the Las Vegas Chapter hosted the A’19 Conference on Architecture in June last year, it was the staff of EV&A who stepped up and volunteered to provide tour coordination and tour hosting services, and to provide a recognition and gratitude celebration for all volunteers and staff following the conference. EV&A also takes an active role in mentoring and supporting the UNLV School of Architecture and the AIAS Chapter members. In addition EV&A provides a pathway to licensure for interns in their firm by providing educational programs, advising and reimbursement of examination costs. EV&A’s work, as a collaborative design team has resulted in numerous recognitions and design awards from industry leaders and organizations. Their portfolio is impressive with award winning projects in commercial, hospitality, entertainment and healthcare projects. Further, the firm’s commitment to protecting and elevating the profession of architecture is documented by the number and the quality of leaders they have provided in support of the profession through the local and state Chapters of the AIA, and through their active encouragement of community outreach with organizations such as Opportunity Village, UNLV Center for Autism, Shade Tree Shelter, Back to School Support for Kids, and many others. Edward A. Vance, FAIA is a model architect who has created an exemplary architecture firm that inspires not only the members of that firm, but also the members of the AIA Las Vegas architectural community. It is for these reasons that EV&A was nominated and certainly deserves to be recognized. I hope you will agree and honor their exceptional contributions with the 2020 AIA Nevada Architecture Firm Award. Yours truly, Randy Lavigne, Hon. September 17, 2020 Members of Selection Committee AIA Nevada 1131 S. Casino Center Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89104 RE: AJA Nevada Architecture Firm Award - EV&A Architects Nominee Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing in support of EV&A Architects nomination for AJA Nevada Architecture Firm 2020. I have had an amazing experience working with EV&A during the construction of the building that now houses UNLV's Black Fire Innovation at the UNLV Harry Reid Research and Technology Park. Ed Vance and his team provided competent, zealous, and professional services in working with the UNLV team and in designing and constructing the building as well as making the Black Fire Innovation space within the building an envious location to drive economic development and diversification within Southern Nevada. They truly created a location that attracts hi tech businesses, supports the translation of ideas to life changing products and services, and where students of UNL V can engage in real-world applications of the academic learning. Along with Ed, Kellie Wanbaugh, and Kimberly Galbe were outstanding to work with. Black Fire Innovation is a first of its kind in Southern Nevada and required excellent communication and listening skills in order to understand the unique needs of the facilities. They were able to deliver the amazing design that turned into Black Fire Innovation and warranted Former Senator Harry Reid saying, and I am paraphrasing a bit, "this building is the cornerstone of the Research Park." I strongly support the nomination of EV&A Architects and Ed Vance and his team who have turned a vision of a needed resource within Southern Nevada into a reality. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
A

EV&A AIA 2020 Nevada Distinguished Service Awards, Architecture Firm Award Nominee
Dear Members of the Jury, It is with great pleasure that I recommend EV&A for AIA Nevada’s Firm of the Year Award. Our company has worked with many team members at EV&A on multiple projects in the Las Vegas Valley including the Expo at World Market Center, UNLV Tech Park Building #1 on the Harry Reid Campus, and the Aristocrat Office Complex. In all of our engagements with EV&A, we have found their creativity and vision to be nothing less than excellent. Not only do the project managers and principals have a thorough knowledge of traditional architectural and construction issues, they also have the exceptional ability to move the architectural needle with forward-thinking design strategies that inherently incorporate sustainability into all their work. In addition to their attention to detail on all their architectural projects, EV&A has a number of committed AIA Las Vegas members who have served in leadership positions both locally and nationally and have a outstanding commitment to the young members of our profession through outreach at the UNLV School of Architecture through the AIA Student Chapter and the support of mentorship programs through AIA Las Vegas and AIA Nevada as well as the State Licensing Board. There is no doubt that I will continue to work with EV&A on future projects. I always look forward to working with them for their dedication to meeting (and surpassing) client requirements and timelines, developing creative solutions, and promoting green building through smart design. For their design influence in our community and the continued support of the profession and the AIA, I nominate EV&A for the 2020 Architecture Firm Award. Sincerely,
Jennifer Turchin, NCARB, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, GGP, ENV SP Principal, Coda Group, Inc.
