With a dedication that began in 1990, Edward A. Vance, has served the AIA at the local, state, regional and national levels. For Ed, the role of a professional leader is servant-based: encouraging, supporting and enabling others to reach their full potential and capabilities. He advocates participation, collegiality and engagement to forge meaningful alliances between individuals and components, to generate enthusiasm within and for the profession, and to effectively represent the AIA among design colleagues, the academy, policy makers and the public. Ed’s servant leadership advances and celebrates the AIA’s mission and objectives. As 2010-12 AIA Western Mountain Regional (WMR) Director, Ed funded and redesigned the WMR website, authored their 50th Anniversary Book, and created the “AIA 101” presentation, which informs the organization’s repositioning today. As AIA Nevada President, he brought the state’s two chapters closer through better communication systems, including the first AIA Nevada website, initiating a state-wide newsletter, and introducing a “Stateonly” awards program. He went on to launch AIA Las Vegas’ first Membership Directory, chaired the AIA Las Vegas golf tournament and, as AIA Las Vegas President, established new committees that resulted in significant growth in local membership. Ed’s efforts at the forefront of the profession in his region led to Envisioning Nevada’s Future, the result of joint efforts between Las Vegas Region public policy makers and the profession to create strategies for economic improvement that include sustainable quality of life initiatives. Ed is a passionate mentor and champion of emerging professionals, interns and young leaders in Nevada and nationally. As a member of the national Board Community Committee, he developed the “Citizen Architect” presentation to guide students and young architects on career paths that promote leadership and licensure. He hosts YAF functions at his office and home to support and promote their goals. He served as Nevada State IDP coordinator, lecturing at the university, advising, counseling and mentoring hundreds of students on IDP and licensure. These endeavors have bridged boundaries between the Academy, internship and practice, fostering and furthering the future of practice for generations of leaders. Ed has shared his approach to professional service and to fostering a more collegial organization by speaking before peers, students, allied professionals, construction leaders, developers and the public for over 25 years, including conferences for the AIA, the University of Nevada Las Vegas, NAIOP (Commercial Real Estate Development Association), the Clark County School District, the Rotary Club, Boy Scouts of America, and the Lied Institute of Real Estate Studies. He has authored several books and more than 30 pieces that have appeared in national, regional and local publications, as well as continuing education presentations. These efforts have informed and educated thousands of design professionals and the public nationwide. As champion for a stronger, more service oriented profession, Ed has advanced the Institute through initiatives and presentations that improve Institute, component and member cohesiveness and impact. His passion for service inspires and informs professionals and the public, elevating the significance of architects in society. 3

| Contributions | Regional Leadership

Edward Vance’s vision and commitment have unified and strengthened Western Mountain Region chapters and components, while celebrating and advocating service and engagement nationally. His efforts position the profession to better serve and contribute to society.

LEADERSHIP OF AIA WESTERN MOUNTAIN REGION (1998-present) •

Created & Authored “AIA 101” (2012) With members continually asking about the history, purpose and structure of the Institute, Ed authored a presentation to answer these fundamental questions. “AIA 101” provides a comprehensive orientation to the AIA regionally and nationally. The presentation has been given at the local, state, regional and national levels. It also introduces Ed’s premise that the Institute must be a “bottom-up” organization, as illustrated by an inverted pyramid. Sharing this concept with the Pentagram & LaPlaca Cohen team at the 2012 Fall Board Meeting, it was subsequently adopted and has become an integral part of the national “Repositioning” agenda.

Celebrating Membership (2012) In 2011, Ed learned that six medals of one of Nevada’s Fellows (Robert Fielden, FAIA) had been stolen—medals earned over a long and distinguished career. Over the next year, Ed had all 6 medals recreated, including the Nevada and WMR Silver Medals, Upjohn and Fellows Medals, NCARB President’s Medal and finally, his Texas Tech Distinguished Alumni Medal. Ed assembled a distinguished group of past medal recipients who re-presented Robert Fielden, FAIA with every medal lost.

Led Regional Re-Branding (2010) In continuation of his 50th anniversary committee efforts, Ed redesigned and launched a new WMR website and graphic brand. With improved navigation features, the website includes links to AIA.org, each state chapter’s webpage, new pages on history, award recipients, the Pettigrew scholarship, current leadership biographies, contact information and, finally, a regional affairs page that provides members with current information and upcoming events. The result is a comprehensive and improved single site resource for all regional members.

Authored & Published WMR Anniversary Book (2008-2009) Taking on the role as Co-Chair of the 2008 WMR 50th Anniversary Celebration, Ed designed and published a commemorative anthology of the Region’s history and accomplishments. Available on the region’s website, proceeds from the book’s sales go directly to the Pettigrew Scholarship fund.

Improved Regional Honor Awards Program (2001) As Chair of the Regional Honor Awards Jury, Ed recognized a lack of participation and a low number of submissions. In the final year of his 3-year term, he and his fellow jurors re-wrote submission requirements to encourage participation, urging each state to submit their honor award winners. Subsequent years have seen an increased number of submittals resulting in a healthier program and greater acknowledgement of distinguished service in the region.

Launched WMR Annual Golf Tournament (1998) In an effort to promote regional conference attendance, Ed launched the first WMR Golf Tournament held in Phoenix, Arizona. Organizing and chairing the event, he designed and purchased a traveling trophy to be returned home to the winning chapter’s office. The event has successfully continued since 1998 and has generated significant additional revenue to each host chapter.

| Contributions | State Leadership

Edward Vance’s vision and commitment have unified and strengthened Western Mountain Region chapters and components, while celebrating and advocating service and engagement nationally. His efforts position the profession to better serve and contribute to society.

LEADERSHIP OF AIA NEVADA (1990-present)

“Ed Vance is among Nevada’s most active and respected voices for architecture and urban design. Under his leadership, the AIA has emerged as one of our most energetic and vital forums for education, thought leadership, and community problemsolving. What Vance accomplished has been remarkable. He and the AIA Nevada Task Force not only visualized the future of our State, they provided a road map to achieve our state’s goals serving the lawmakers and decision makers of Nevada for years to come.”

Membership Outreach (2012) With the poor economy and diminishing membership, Ed sought to attract new AIA members at the state and local levels. He, with Executive Director, Randy Lavigne, Hon. AIA, approached the Nevada State Board of Architecture for approval to recognize all new registrants on behalf of the Institute. Ed designed a Certificate of Recognition, which is now presented to each new registrant, welcoming them to the AIA as they are licensed. A welcome package includes a membership application and chapter information. The result: an increase in young architect membership, with 80% of all new architectural registrants becoming members of the AIA since the program began.

Architects & Nevada Economic Diversification (2011) As a direct result of the “24-Hour Town Hall” sessions, Nevada State Senator, Steven Horsford approached AIA Nevada to investigate possible solutions to the State’s economic shortfalls and propose ideas for diversifying its economy.Ed seized this opportunity to place the profession at the forefront of regional public policy. He took on the role of Task Force Chair, assembling a team of architects to take on the Senator’s challenge. Ed researched and catalogued the State’s existing industries and, working with the Nevada Development Authority and the State’s Committee on Economic Development, identified new industries and companies that would best augment Nevada’s anemic economy. The AIA Nevada Task Force identified broad goals and specific objectives and strategies for Nevada to reach and sustain a desirable quality of life via Transportation, Health Care, Tourism and R&D. The AIA team added Education, citing its critical importance in broader economic progress. Ed, along with AIA Las Vegas President Eric Roberts, AIA and Executive Director Randy Lavigne, Hon. AIA presented the findings to the Nevada State Senate Committee on Economic Growth and Employment and the Ways & Means, Health & Human Services, and Transportation Committees providing valuable legislative strategies to achieve economic diversification. Ed then published the presentation as a book entitled, Envisioning Nevada’s Future and presented copies to Las Vegas Mayor, Dr. Carolyn Goodman and to AIA Nevada for inclusion in the Chapter’s library.

Invigorated Component Collaboration (2001) As President, Ed recognized the need for improved relations between the state’s two chapters. He championed the effort to fund for a new AIA Nevada website and fostered sharing of local news through a joint newsletter. Ed also initiated a “State-only” awards program to be hosted alternate years by each chapter. Today, members of the two chapters are more collegial and collaborative. The website allows easy access to current and vital regional information and fosters AIA Nevada as a unified organization.

Launched & Chaired First AIA Nevada Fellows Committee (2001) Urged by Executive Director Randy Lavigne, Hon. AIA, Ed brought together the Nevada’s only two Fellows to identify potential candidates for elevation. Four Nevadans have now been elevated to Fellowship—a 200% increase. These individuals now comprise that committee. Ed’s efforts have raised the caliber, expectations and recognition of practice and professionals in the region. 6

Edward Vance’s vision and commitment have unified and strengthened Western Mountain Region chapters and components, while celebrating and advocating service and engagement nationally. His efforts position the profession to better serve and contribute to society.

AIA LAS VEGAS (1990-present)

EDWARD A. VANCE, FAIA

Building a New Knowledge Community (2010) Ed launched the new Las Vegas Chapter of the Academy of Architecture for Health that brought together representatives from over 90% of Las Vegas firms that provide services to the healthcare industry.

Bridging Institute & Community (2007) Ed’s work as a Committee Chair in the AIA150 celebration’s national “24-Hour Town Hall” Meetings was so well received by Las Vegas Valley Mayors and County Commissioners for its strategies for the Las Vegas Region that Mayor Oscar Goodman requested an encore presentation at the University of Nevada Las Vegas; the presentation was presented at “AIA National” later that year as part of the AIA150 celebration.

Invigorated Component Growth & Membership (1999-2000) As president, Ed recognized a need for more programs for emerging professionals and for sustainable chapter growth. Within the first 30 days of his administration, Ed formed 3 new committees: Membership, Growth and Long Range Planning. As a result, the chapter doubled in size over the next decade, improving member value and building a foundation for the future.

Membership Directory (1991-1992) Member Directories are a valued resource. However, AIA Las Vegas had never had a local or state resource publication, Ed created and authored the Chapter’s first. Designing the cover and page layouts, Ed researched and documented the membership, served as staff photographer, and printed the directory at no cost to the chapter by selling advertising, ultimately providing the chapter with a new revenue source. Today the Directory is considered one of the region’s best membership publications.

Networking & Revenue (1990-1994) Ed became Chair of AIA Las Vegas Annual Golf Tournament in 1990. For 5 years, he continually upgraded the venue’s location, improving attendance, member involvement and sponsorship opportunities to make it the chapter’s largest single revenue source and build stronger networking for participants.

Edited & Contributed to AIA Las Vegas Newsletter (1990-1991) As editor, Ed redesigned and retitled the publication, while introducing national articles and adding advertising sponsorships. His work transformed the existing AIA Las Vegas newsletter by increasing chapter revenue, improving member value and creating a shared professional forum.

| Supporting Info | National Leadership

Edward Vance’s vision and commitment have unified and strengthened Western Mountain Region chapters and components, while celebrating and advocating service and engagement nationally. His efforts position the profession to better serve and contribute to society.

LEADERSHIP OF AIA NATIONAL (2010-present)

“Ed Vance is a force of nature. His vision, dedication and sheer energy are astounding. He inspires others into leadership, sharing his knowledge and his talents unselfishly while continuously working to advance the profession. He has made a positive contribution at all levels of the Institute as well as his local community.

Supported College of Fellows Initiatives (2013) Secretary and Chairman Al Ruebling, FAIA approached Ed to join the College of Fellows Golf Committee after receiving unanimous appointment earlier this year. No stranger to fundraising, Ed introduced four new corporate sponsors for this year’s tournament in Denver raising 33% to help achieve a record breaking fundraising year for the Committee to support emerging professional programs and the prestigious Latrobe Prize for scientific research.

Advanced AIA Board—Documenting the Service Experience (2010-2012) Upon arriving in Washington DC as Regional Director, Ed began photographing every board event he attended. For three years, he compiled and organized this photography, preparing digital slide shows from each Grassroots Convention, National Convention, Fall Board Meeting and December Board Meeting including each of the three presidential inaugurations. After every gathering, Ed created slide shows, complete with music and captions, which were sent to every sitting board and national staff member. The AIA had never before had a comprehensive photo gallery to memorialize these unforgettable ceremonies and traditions. Recognizing the need to perpetuate a photo historian position on the Board, at the 2011 December Board meeting, Secretary Helene Dreiling, FAIA presented Ed with a Resolution of Appointment signed by President Clark Manus, FAIA, making Ed the first Chancellor of the College of Photographers (Clickers), a position to be passed to subsequent willing board members, preserving a new tradition of capturing time spent on the board and celebrating work done of behalf of the Institute’s membership.

Authored & Published President’s Annuals (2010-2012) Ed furthered his duties as Board Chancellor of the College of Photographers to acknowledge each national president. Starting with President George Miller, FAIA, Ed assembled and published a presidential annual for each of the three presidents he served, chronicling their time as national AIA president. Each book chronicles their inauguration, board service and significant contributions with images of key staff, executive committees and every board member serving under their leadership. The books are signed by key staff and board members and presented at the Grassroots Convention, commemorating the presidents for their outstanding service to the Institute.

Randy Lavigne, Hon. AIA Executive Director AIA Nevada

Ed personally funded these publications and has made each available to fellow board members for purchase. He has donated copies to the library at AIA National Headquarters in Washington DC. These books serve as further evidence of Ed’s passion for and commitment to documenting and celebrating service to the profession. “Ed Vance has brought a unique service to the Institute - his sensitivity and skill in documenting legacy provide a meaningful historical perspective. We discover the value of such work when we endeavor to research and celebrate the past without adequate record. “ Jeff Potter, FAIA EDWARD A. VANCE, FAIA

Section 4.3 | Supporting Info | Academic Leadership Throughout his professional career, Edward Vance has bridged the dynamic between education and the practice of architecture. He is an exemplar teacher/practitioner, contributing and sharing his passion for service, practice and architectural representation with the academy, his peers and his community.

Chaired AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Architectural Education (2012) Ed was appointed to the prestigious National Jury in 2011 and assumed the Chair in 2012. He and fellow jurors, Preston Cohen (Harvard), Dana Cuff (UCLA) and Glen Leroy, FAIA (Lawrence Tech) selected George Baird as recipient for his outstanding achievements in Architectural Education. Ed authored and presented a summary of jury deliberations to the AIA National Board of Directors and garnered unanimous ratification.

Created & Chaired Field Sketching Seminar (2011) Preparing the curriculum and presentation, Ed was accepted to be a part of the 2011 AIA Regional Conference. For this 2 AIA LU seminar, he assembled a regional team of talented architects, led a clinic/walking tour where students and emerging professionals participated in field sketching and were exposed to the value of visual thinking techniques.

The Art of Drawing at UNLV (2009-2011) Invited by staff at UNLV’s School of Architecture, Ed has conducted drawing clinics and seminars to third, fourth and fifth year architecture students to communicate the importance of visual thinking in the design process. Utilizing his book Architectural Sketches, students completed sketch exercises, participated in follow-up demonstrations and learned valuable methods of drawing quickly and effectively to better communicate ideas to staff and their future clients.

Supported Professional Practice at UNLV (2009-2011) With a strong reputation as a practicing architect, Pro-Practice instructors regularly invited Ed to guest lecture at the UNLV School of Architecture. Utilizing a variety of presentations, Ed provides invaluable insight on leadership and becoming an accomplished practitioner and serve the profession and the public.

Created Class on Architecture & Development (2008-2011) When the Las Vegas NAIOP Chapter launched their Developing Leaders Institute in 2008, they turned to Ed to develop their curriculum for the Architecture/ Built Environment segment. Teaching the course for three years, his ongoing curriculum includes pre-development, masterplanning, design, marketing, financing and construction. His class is continually voted by students as one of the best in the program.

Drawing at UNLV (1990-1991, 1998) Ed approached UNLV to add a drawing class to their academic curriculum in 1989. He volunteered to prepare the course vitae and, as adjunct professor, taught students in the art of free-hand drawing. To further reinforrce awareness of hand drawing to the academy and the profession, Ed organized and assembled his European field sketches into an exhibition held at UNLV’s School of Architecture in 1998, encouraging and inspiring students to draw more in order to keep the spirit of the sketch alive. “Ed’s book provides the the perfect combination of hand drawing skills and quick sketching techniques that provide students the confidence to create visual solutions that connect everyone to the value of design and design thinking.” Jim Leggitt, FAIA

Section 4.4 | Supporting Info | EP Leadership Edward Vance’s professional life has been noted for mentorship, community involvement, civic participation and volunteer service. Blending his leadership skills, problem solving abilities and teaching expertise, he has consistently prepared emerging professionals as the next generation of professionals and leaders.

“Evolution of the Architect,” Grassroots Leadership Seminar (2012) Ed initiated and authored a seminar presentation that encourages emerging professionals to become more engaged in their profession and their communities and to identify the leadership skills necessary to become successful leaders. Participants leave with a toolkit and newfound enthusiasm for personal improvement, for becoming leaders in their firms and communities and for serving the greater good. The program chronicles aspects of leadership from Young Architect, Accomplished Practitioner to Citizen Architect.

Local YAF Initiatives (2012) Promoting the mission of the Young Architects Forum, AIA Las Vegas initiated the Architect’s Speak lecture series, asking Ed to speak to emerging professionals on practice, leadership and the academy. Ed’s “Citizen Architect Workshop” introduces his concept of the “Level 5 Architect”: a professional service provider who becomes a client’s “Trusted Advisor.” Participants gain tools for personal and professional improvement, preparing them to become leaders in their firms and communities.

“Citizen Architect” (2010) Ed first authored and introduced the “Citizen Architect” workshop at the 2010 Western Mountain Region Convention in Deer Valley, UT. It became a standard program at subsequent conferences. His leadership program was accepted as a 1.5 LU Workshop and included esteemed panelists including Soren Simonsen, AIA; UNLV’s Leadership Professor Randy McCrillis; Ruby Warthan; and Young Architect Regional Director Virginia Marquardt, AIA.

EPYAF Mentorship Dinner (2011) After learning of Charleston, South Carolina’s award winning Mentor Dinner Series, Ed opened his home and office to emerging professionals including the EPYAF Mentorship Dinner series, which provided opportunities for young professionals to exchange ideas with the local design community. The evening created a relaxed environment for EP’s to engage in open discussion on career development and other common interests.

Supported High School Leadership Programs (2011) With a mission to prepare High School teens to become engaged members of their community, Ed volunteered and served as a facilitator for this Leadership Henderson sponsored program. EDWARD A. VANCE, FAIA

Promoted Middle School Career Initiatives (2008-2012) In 2008, Ed launched a Kids Career Day Program to educate and motivate students in grades K-8. Ed’s program allows every student to discover and develop their future potential by illustrating diverse career options and encouraging an “I can do it attitude.” He promotes early commitment to education by linking today’s learning with tomorrow’s career opportunities.

Initiated College Scholarship Fund (2002-Present) During his 18 year tenure at JMA, Ed and his partner launched and fully endowed the JMA Scholarship for Clark County School District seniors interested in pursuing a career in architecture to attend an accredited School of Architecture program. Students must demonstrate financial need, carry a minimum 3.0 unweighted cumulative GPA and have participated in the Clark County School District’s drafting program. Working with the Public Education Foundation, the $5,000 annual scholarship fosters academic success.

AIA Grassroots Presentation, “Bridging the Gap” (1998) As AIA Las Vegas President-Elect, Ed’s seminar at the AIA Grassroots Convention in Washington, DC was entitled, “Bridging the Gap between Practice and Academy.” It emphasized the need for practice and academics to work toward a more collaborative relationship, to foster internships in firms, and to encourage “teaching practitioners” in schools. He went on to write a related article for the AIA’s annual publication.

Nevada State IDP Coordinator for NCARB (1995-1998) Appointed by the state AIA component, Ed served for three years as Nevada’s IDP Coordinator providing emerging professionals and students with the latest information on the IDP, ARE, and state licensing requirements. He acted as the resource for interns in his state, giving presentations at the local university while participating on AIA and NCARB committees related to IDP.

Launched Explorer Post for Boy Scouts (1993-1995) Partnering with the local council of BSA, Ed created and led the first explorer post for architecture in Las Vegas, bringing “real-world” career experiences to young men and women through its Exploring programs. The post continues today providing ideal, interactive links between the academic environment and the real world.

Supported Local Children’s Charities (1994-2006) Ed served as a member of the Las Vegas Founder’s Club for over twelve years raising over $10 million for local children’s charities. The Club’s professional golf tournament nearly ended in 2003 when it lost its title sponsor. Ed found an interim tournament sponsor who donated $4.5 million dollars over 3 years allowing the Founders enough time to find a new title sponsor. In 2005, the Founders signed Michelin, and the tournament achieved its charitable giving goal. The tournament continues today, partnering with the Shriner’s Hospital’s for Children.

Steinberg Diagnostic Imaging Center This award winning design for SDMI demonstrates how an approach to practice and service translates into architectural form. The design unites eight distinct diagnostic modalities including PET, MRI, CT, Nuclear Medicine and a complete women’s center. Dual hallways were utilized in the clinic’s planning to provide necessary separation between patients and clinicians. Three interior courtyards were integrated into the design to bring natural light into the facility’s sub-waiting rooms promoting a calming affect for patients and staff alike. At over 30,000 SF, this facility was the company’s flagship and one of the largest stand-alone diagnostic clinics in the country. It houses the company’s corporate offices and consolidated all records and data into one central location. The design, which provides a holistic, seamless healthcare experience from check-in to discharge, has served as a model for all future stand-alone diagnostic clinics in the region. The state-of-theart facility has attracted high caliber physicians and offers convenient and accurate medical solutions to the diagnostic needs of all its users.

Architectural Firm Offices This award winning design evolved from a simple premise that is emblematic of the firm’s approach to practice and professional services – better, more collegial design is at the core of every effort. Nearly all of the firm’s support functions surround and nurture the design processes housed within a large central “Studio” volume. The project orients northward providing staff with scenic mountain views, abundant natural light and reduced sun exposures. Sustainable features include deeply recessed openings with horizontal shade fins, light shelves, and a massive stone clad wall that protects the building’s southern face from the harsh desert sun. The design’s impact on firm and staff operations includes doubling of firm profit margins and an increase in the number of commissions secured. The building realized and accommodated a growth in staff from 65 to 220 in less than 10 years. The firm also realized a significant reduction in turnover, and in 2005 was recognized as one of the “Best Places to Work” in Southern Nevada.

Steinberg Medical Office Building Sited adjacent to the Steinberg Diagnostic Medical Imaging facility in the Las Vegas Tech Center, this two story administration building provides SDMI with an innovative and efficient solution to the expanding company. Choosing to consolidate all their valley wide administrative functions into this one location allowed SDMI to expand the imaging functions within each of their Las Vegas facilities. Satisfying a very design oriented client was our design team’s challenge, going beyond the typical medical office building template, creating a facility representing the type of technical advances the medical industry is making today. The “MRI slice” through the building embodies this concept. Attention to detail and the infusion of local materials and forms create a unique and stunning facility.

Veterans Administration - Clinic Prototype Relaxation. Something that doesn’t usually happen in a Clinic. The goal for these VA Clinic prototypes was to reinvent the visitor experience applying our multidisciplinary, multi-sector approach to create something novel: A clinic designed to help patients relax. The clinic proposes to blend the history of the VA Clinic’s comfortable and hospitable setting with the complex, high-tech aspect of modern medical care. Designated as a leader in the delivery of quality healthcare, the clinic maintains the comfort and reassurance of the emotional and spiritual balance of its patients, visitors and staff. The orthogonal framing features are reiterated and reinterpreted at different scales to announce a significant encounter in each person’s journey as they approach and walk into the facility. The portals mark transition points from the public street to site drive, from vehicular to pedestrian travel, and the threshold between outdoor and indoor experiences. The white and silver portals emerge as a reinforcement of the promise of a familiar, consistent healthcare experience.

Magnolia Bluffs Casino - Natchez, MS Sited just below the historic Roth Hill in Natchez MS, Magnolia Bluffs Casino was built over the Mississippi River to comply with State’s strict gaming regulations. The project is supported on nearly fifty steel piles giving patrons the feeling that they are floating on the river providing a real connection to the site often overlooked in typical casino designs. Using rustic materials and local vernacular, EV&A Architects collaborated with the Natchez Historical Society to recreate an early 20th century cedar mill that was located here nearly a century ago. A municipal pedestrian river walk winds itself around the building’s riverside perimeter providing access to the casino’s “Back-Porch” amenities complete with a fire pit and stunning views of the Mississippi and her majestic sunsets. The project’s interior further reinforces the treasured history of this site by displaying historical art pieces of the mills that once were an integral part of the river’s landscape. The 40,000 SF facility features an open gaming floor with 600 slot machines and a complete complement of table games. A centrally located sports bar, a 180-seat themed buffet along with a fine dining specialty restaurant complete the project’s offerings.

Symphony Park Bridge This award winning design for the City of Las Vegas pedestrian bridge embodies the union of form and function linking an established urban area to the new Symphony Park development in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. Separated by the Union Pacific Railroad, this nearly 200-foot crossing places a trio of piers on the park side, with a spire emerging from the two primary piers that house the vertical transportation systems. Resembling a stringed instrument, the cablestayed bridge supports strung from the 75-foot-high spire extend to the bridge’s shade canopies, which are cantilevered outward and upward toward each urban area beckoning pedestrians to enter. Completed in May 2013, the Las Vegas Symphony Park Bridge became the first of its kind to provide easy pedestrian access from downtown Las Vegas to the new Symphony Park Development and the newly completed Smith Center for the Performing Arts. The site (a former Union Pacific rail yard) is a reclaimed browns field project and part of the City’s 61-Acre master plan development.

July 25 , 2014 Mr. Bruce Fallon , AlA Chair, WMR Honor Awa rds Jury The American Institute of Architects 30 North Third Avenue I Suite 200 Phoenix, AZ 85003 Recommendation for : Ed Vance, FAIA - 2014 AlA WMR Silver Medal Nominee Dear Mr. Fallon and Members of the Jury: It is with great honor and respect that I recommend Edward A. Vance, FAIA for the 2014 AlA WMR Silver Medal. I have known Ed for over two decades as a colleague, competitor and friend . Over this span of time , I have witnessed his transformational leadership , passionate service and limitless advocacy within and for the Ame rican Institute of Architects at the local , state, regional and national level. I have been fortunate to serve with many talented arch itects within the Institute, and I can unequ ivocally state that Ed Vance is one of the finest for his approach to practice, service, and impacting the professional experience of students and emerging architects. He has established a very successful practice here in Las Vegas-no small feat in of itself-while simultaneously dedicating countless hours toward successfully serving and advancing the Institute. When Ed was a national representative of our chapter and region, he put boundless energy to craft, advocate, and implement initiatives and special projects within the Institute that have more strongly unified and aligned ind ividuals and components . His leadership has also placed architects and architecture more soundly at the forefront of policy makers and the public. When I served as one of Nevada's champions fo r the AlA 150 Celebration , Ed played a vital role as committee chair and in organizing our 24-hour Town Hall efforts. The results were so well received by our legislature that Nevada State Senator Steven Horsford reached out to AlA Nevada to help investigate solutions to diversify the Nevada economy. Ed stepped forward , offering to lead the AlA Nevada task force as chair. Through his efforts the book Envisioning Nevada 's Future was published. This volume has helped state leaders craft a framework for future legislation that is based soundly in AlA values of sustainabil ity and creating livable communities . This endeavor simply would not have been successful without Ed's tireless commitment, enthusiasm and public advocacy skills . Other examples of Ed's significant contributions include creating and authoring websites , directories , newsletters, awards programs, committees and books that unify and expand membersh ip and celebrate milestones for the Institute and its professionals. In addition , he has mentored countless students and emerging professionals through his lectures, presentations , YAF participation , lOP leadership, NCARB, advice, counsel and practice. My recommendation of Ed Vance would be incomplete without acknowledging his passion , devotion and contagious enthusiasm for our profession and the Institute. As we face a new chapter in the history of the AlA, we must seek and celebrate professionals who embody passion , commitment and excitement for the design, processes and people of architecture. Ed Vance's accomplishments, service, advocacy and creativity emphasize and foster individual and collective empowerment and exemplify the future of our Institute. In conclusion , I strongly encourage the jury to award the 2014 AlA WMR Silver Medal to Ed Vance, FAIA.

Re: Edward A. Vance, FAIA

30 North Third Avenue | Suite 200 Phoenix, AZ 85003 Dear Distinguished Members of the Jury, It is a privilege to recommend Edward A. Vance, FAIA for the Western Mountain Silver Medal. Ed is an outstanding role model for all architects, especially young architectural students and interns. His leadership abilities at national, regional and state levels are exceptional. Having served as chair of numerous national and regional award juries and being the recipient of the WMR Silver Medal, I understand what is required to earn the distinction of Silver Medal and am surprised he hasn’t already received it. I have known Ed since 1999, when I was Director of the Western Mountain Region, and he was an emerging leader within AIA Nevada. I have witnessed Ed’s steady rise within the Institute’s leadership ranks and the results of his many successful and unifying initiatives and programs across the country. I have observed firsthand of his dedication, focus and enthusiasm for serving the architectural profession. His many leadership skills have benefited AIA members, communities and organizations including UNLV’s School of Architecture, where he has mentored students and young professionals for over two decades. Ed is an accomplished author of books as varied as his Architectural Sketches, recording the service of four AIA National Presidents and especially the publication celebrating the AIA Western Mountain Region’s 50 year history. Ed is also currently assisting production of a volume of my own sketches, which will provide another book that showcases drawing by regional professionals. These works are a testament to Ed’s passion to further and celebrate the profession and his dedication to advance the Institute. Ed’s fellow National Board members recognize him as a leader with vision, who brings insight and camaraderie to the AIA while raising the value and perception of professional service for all. The paramount reason Ed should be considered for the WMR Silver Medal is his unfaltering advocacy for, commitment to and diplomacy on behalf of the AIA. He has encouraged, supported and enabled others to improve themselves and expand their knowledge, while bringing together individuals and components with enthusiasm and collegiality. His service regionally has significantly unified our six states. Ed’s “AIA-101” presentation has elevated these vital efforts to a national level, communicating a better understanding of the Institute to its members and leadership. These efforts also have had a direct impact on our AIA repositioning. Ed’s exceptional service reflects his consistent emphasis on advancing the Institute’s missions while mentoring tomorrow’s professionals. As a national AIA leader, accomplished practitioner, writer, mentor, teacher, valued long time colleague, and friend, I believe that Edward A. Vance, FAIA is eminently deserving of this important honor. His distinguished accomplishments within the AIA merit our region’s recognition, and I strongly urge his support for the WMR Silver Medal. Western Mountain Region Silver Medal Award Letter of Endorsement for Edward A. Vance, FAIA

Dear Mr. Fallon and Jury Members: It is truly a privilege to endorse and support the WMR Silver Medal submittal of Edward A. Vance, FAIA. I have known and worked with Ed off and on for the past twenty years and can speak to his character and dedication both to the profession and to the Institute. In my experience as a practitioner and volunteer leader at all levels of the AIA, I’ve found that individuals with Ed’s passion for understanding and championing the important issues that affect our profession are rare indeed. His volunteer leadership at all levels of the Institute has had a profound and lasting impact on the Western Mountain Region. One of his amazing accomplishments was the funding and redesigning of the WMR website to provide WMR members access to information and services that affect their careers and businesses. Ed has a deep conviction for the profession knowing that it must attract the best and brightest and set the stage for them to thrive. When these individuals commit to the demanding path to licensure, we have the responsibility to provide support, council and encouragement. Ed has delivered consistently through thoughtful and productive action. He has been extremely generous involving himself at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. His students have benefited from the sketching workshops that reinforce the need for students to explore and communicate through hand drawing. Recently Ed was published and quoted, “I love drawings; I don’t want it to become a lost art. To me there’s a romance that an architect has with a sketch.” Ed has published a book, Architectural Sketches, which is used in some of the classes he teaches at UNLV.

While spending countless volunteer hours, Ed found time to generate wonderful architecture that has attracted talented employees to his firm, Ed Vance and Associates. His ability to organize his firm and mobilize his employees led to his prior firm being recognized as the “Best Place to Work”. His positive work ethic in practice and profession is widely known throughout WMR and the country. He has been part of over 20 design awards along with numerous personal honors and recognitions which should include the 2014 WMR Silver Medal. The WMR Silver Medal is given in recognition of an individual’s contributions toward the benefit of the profession. It is my firm belief that the thousands of hours Ed Vance has donated to enhance the practice of architecture and raising the esteem of architects in his community, the region and country depict the essence of this award. Thank you for considering my comments regarding my good friend and colleague, Edward A. Vance, FAIA for the 2014 Western Mountain Region Silver Medal. Respectfully,
