ANDROS

ANDROS ď‚— Andros is the northernmost island of the

Cyclades. The main port of the island is Gavrio, with regular connections to Rafina, while the ports of Batsi, Chora and Korthi have a docking and service infrastructure for fishing boats and pleasure boats. ď‚— The island has many rivers, streams, streams, many springs and streams with lush vegetation of plane trees, walnuts and oak trees. In Andros there are paths drowned in the green with streams and small waterfalls, with traditional cobblestone streets that cross the villages of the area offering an unforgettable hike, bringing the visitor in touch with nature.

HISTORY ď‚— The name of the island probably comes from General Andros from Crete. It was also called

"Lassia" for its dense vegetation or "Hydrousa" for the abundance of its waters. Finally, we find the name "Gavros", which has been preserved until today and is the name of the port of Andros. Archaeological excavations prove the existence of developed settlements from the Mycenaean times or even earlier. The capital of Andros, during the classical era, was Paleopoli. The prosperity of this period is shown by the rich coinage. Relevant findings, along with Hermes of Andros, are hosted at the Archaeological Museum in Andros. Andros was found successively under the Roman, Franconian and Ottoman occupations. Byzantine-style churches, such as Taxiarchis in Ypsilos, Melida and Messaria, and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Mesathouri. date back to the 11th century AD. In the 14th century the monastery of Aghia Zoodohos Pigi was founded near Batsi, while the monastery of Agios Nikolaos was founded in 1560 and was rebuilt in the 18th century. The Panahrantos monastery was founded in the middle of the 17th century. In Agia Triada in Korthi, the first prerevolutionary school of Andros was housed since 1813. On 10 May 1821 Theophilos Kairis raised the banner of the revolution and Andros actively participated in the Liberation Struggle. In the recent times, the island is growing in the commercial shipping sector. Dimitrios Moraitis launched the line of Greece-North America in the early 20th century and in Anderos was in 1939 the second, after Piraeus, in the number of ships registration.
