GEORGIOS PAPANIKOLAOU • Georgios Papanikolaou was born in May 13, 1883. He was a famous Greek physician, biologist and researcher. He was a pioneer in the detection of cervical cancer. He is best known as the man who discovered the pioneering method, known as the Test Pap, which gave life to women all over the world.

PAPANICOLAOU'S RESEARCH • Papanikolaou's researches were then extended to cytological changes in uterine neck cancer, whose findings were published in 1943. The publication of this work was the next to draw attention to the global medical interest and trigger the direct test use of the method in various hospitals.

THE APPLICATION AND METHOD OF PAPANIKOLAOU • In 1923 he applied his method to women, to study normal genital functions and then to diagnose cervical cancer. In 1928, he was accepted with much thought, as the opinion then about such research and application of cells was practically impossible. Such a diagnosis was considered possible, until that time, only by the incision of the affected organ.

THE PROJECTS • Papanikolaou, with his work, became the founding young scientist. This method, which has been awarded the name 'Papanikolaou Method' or 'Pap test' and 'Pap Papers', has opened wide new horizons in medical research on sexual physiology and endocrinology, particularly cancer.

THE END • in November 1961, with his wife and companion in his investigations, he abandoned New York as he agreed to take over the organization and management of a Carcinology Institute in Miami, Florida. Changing the environment and general fatigue for the Institute's needs was crucial. He died on February 19, 1962, from a heart attack. The death of George Papanikolaou was a great loss for science.
