Geographical features Milos, one of the thousands of Greek islands, is to be found in the SW Cyclades, a large island group in the Aegean Sea. It is 86 nautical miles from Piraeus and approximately half way between Piraeus and Crete. Its surface area is 151 square kilometres and its varied coastline is 125 kilometres long. It is a low island, whose highest peak is Prophet Elias in the northwest, rising to 751 metres. The Small Mountain in the same area is 636 metres high, while no other peak reaches over 400 metres.


Location Milos has the shape of a horseshoe, with an area of 151 km², a coastal perimeter of 125 km, and a population of about 5000 inhabitants. Capital: Plaka . Main Port: Adamas .


Famous attractions

The Castle was built in the 13th century on the hill of Prophitis Elias, on the northwest edge of the island (today’s Plaka). Visitors can admire a view of incomparable beauty of the entire island bay and of the magic sunset that is worth enjoying when you decide to climb all the way to the top. Also, on the way up to the Castle, you will have the chance to see the church of The Assumption of the Virgin Mary or Panaghia Skiniotissa and the church of Panaghia Thalassitra.


The people in the town: their jobs and life Milos island has around 5,000 people. In the summer a lot of tourists visit the island so most people who live in Milos work in hotels, rooms to let, restaurants, souvenir shops and other businesses for tourists. Another tourist attraction is the island’s geology and mineral wealth. Many people from Milos work in quarries that exist from ancient times.


Children activities in Milos Island During winter time, the children in the island of Milos learn folk dances and traditional musical instruments. During the summer when the weather is nice, they go fishing and scuba diving. They spend a lot of time on the beach. When the weather is windy, the children do windsurfing and have fun.
