Poros , the magical island

Poros Poros is one of the islands of the Saronic gulf. It consists of two islands, Sfairia and Kalavria, which are connected by a canal. It is situated in small distance from the coast of Peloponnisos and the village Galatas. It has 3600 permanent residents and population increases at summer.
Sights Poros is famous for Lemonodasos ,which is an area full of lemon trees, for the tower clock on the island’s top, where the view is magical and for the Russian Navy Yard ,where ships were constructed during the Greek revolution of 1821.
Poros during ancient years On the top of the ancient town Kalavria was a temple devoted to the god Poseidon, whose ruins can be visited nowadays. In the Archaistic period Poros was part of a Amphyctiony with some other towns, like Athens, Aigina ,Epidauros and Troizina. In 322 b.C. the ancient orator Demosthenes commited a suicide, by drinking poison.
Byzantine and last ages During the Byzantine period pirates invaded the island. At the Ottoman years Poros was still free and contributed with fighters, ships and money to the Revolution of 1821.
The island’s beaches Askeli is the most famous and touristic beach of the island. Other beautiful beaches are Monastiri, Mikro and Megalo Neorio, Vagionia and Love Bay.
