SAMOS
SAMOS • Samos is a Greek island in the eastern Aegean close to the middle of the island and east of Ikarios, and belongs to the prefecture of Samos. According to the 2011 census, it has 32,974 inhabitants. The island is nowadays known for the Nectar's sweet muscat wine, the lush vegetation and its tourist attractions, but also for the personalities it provided in Greek history, such as Pythagoras, the philosopher Epicurus, the astronomer Aristarchus who allegedly designed the first heliocentric map and others. Also there were produced the first bronze statues and the vases of Samos were known in 550 BC. Heraion has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION The island is well-known for the summer season. Of all the islands of Greece, it is the one closest to Turkey, which separates it from the Strait of Mykali. Samos is one of the most beautiful and greenest islands in Greece. Besides the peaks of Mount Kerketes, the rest of the island is covered with orgy vegetation. Dense forests, olives, vineyards and fruit-trees cover almost all of its land from the mountains to the shores.
INFORMATION • The island, which has a population of 32,977 inhabitants with the 2011 census, has a capital of Samos or Kato Vathy, with 6,251 inhabitants, while Karlovasi is the capital with 6.869. Other important settlements are Vathi, the old capital of Chora, Pythagorion, Mytilene, Marathokampos and Kokkari • Samos is home to the Eupalinos tunnel, underground aqueduct and an important technical work of antiquity, described by Herodotus. The tunnel has a length of 1,036 meters and was simultaneously opened from both sides of the mountain and the two tunnels met approximately in the middle, remarkably accurate for the technical means of the time.
SIGHTSEEING • Cave of Pythagoras: It is located at the foot of Kerkis and according to the tradition here it has escaped to hide the philosopher Pythagoras. • Archaeological Museum of Samos: The museum is housed in two buildings. The old museum of 1912, the so-called Paschaleon archaeological site and the new museum. • New Pythagorean Archaeological Museum: The new Archaeological Museum includes statues, funerary columns, sarcophagi, marble statues and ceramics.
