Geomorphological features and population Thessaloniki is the second biggest city in Greece, capital of Macedonia. The city is located in Northern Greece. There is the second largest port of the country which connects the Balkans with the Mediterranean sea. The population is about 1.000.000 people. JOBS Most people are traders or work in the food and tourism industries. There are also jobs in the cruise business and shipping.
A long History
• The city has a long history of more than 2,300 years. King Cassander of Macedonia founded the city in 315 BC . He gave the city the name of his wife Thessaloniki – stepsister of king Alexander the Great. It was the most important city in the Macedonian kingdom. • During the Roman period it was a big trade centre on Via Egnatia. That road joined Thessaloniki with Rome. • Thessaloniki was the second largest and richest city in the Byzantine Empire after Constantinople. • During the Ottoman period the city was an important economic , cultural and trade center and also a multicultural city. After the Balkan wars Thessaloniki got its freedom and became part of the Modern Greek State (26th October 1912) • Today Thessaloniki is a significant business and cultural centre in South eastern Europe. It hosts the International Trade Exhibition every year.
