Cornwall Hospice Care - Spring/Summer 2017

Spring/Summer 2017 Registered Charity No. 1113140

Welcome to our spring newsletter 2017.

It is also going to be a great year for our work in education. Having been shortlisted or won major national awards (see page 22) we fully intend to build on our important work in palliative care education.

In this newsletter we are able to tell you about some exciting new developments for our Cornish Charity. We’re launching a project to deliver our care that is both special and specialist, closer to people in their communities. It’s a much needed expansion of our hospice services. This will be backed up by continued investment at our two inpatient units that we best know as Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia’s Hospices in St Austell and Hayle.

We will continue to provide the 24/7 advice line that underpins the work of all involved in supporting end of life care and are committed to collaborative partnerships with our colleagues in the NHS.

We can embark upon this development only because of the tremendous support we have from people like you. Last year we were fortunate to receive a sizeable number of legacies and these funds will be applied to ensure we can extend the reach of our highly skilled nurses and therapists, backed up by our own in house expert doctors and supported by our dedicated volunteers – a formidable combination.

I hope you will find this edition of our bi-annual newsletter informative and inspiring - it’s your window into a world you are helping to support and develop for the good of us all in Cornwall. Best wishes

Paul Paul Brinsley – Chief Executive 2

I’m writing with the very good news that our Trustees have agreed to fund new Community Clinics. I’m very excited by the opportunity this will give us to care for people across Cornwall and support their loved ones during their illness. We want to reach out to more people across the county. To design a service where improved palliative care, rehabilitation and support are delivered to patients and carers in the community close to their own homes. It’s planned that expertise currently only available to those in our hospices, will be available to others in the community earlier in their illness.

Alongside the multi-assessment clinics, volunteer led services will also be offered; befriending services, help for carers during the illness and post bereavement support for those feeling isolated and lonely. We’ll be recruiting clinical staff in the coming months and aim to open the first of what will ultimately be seven clinics, in the autumn. Watch out for more information as our project develops over the summer.

Dawn Director of Patient Services

At the clinics people will be able to book an appointment to see a wide range of experts including physiotherapists, occupational and complementary therapists, Lymphoedema therapists, counsellors and specialist nurses. A social worker will also be available to help and we can refer people on to our medical staff if necessary. Patients and their carers will be helped to manage their symptoms. Treatments will include management of breathlessness, pain, fatigue, reduced mobility, anxiety, emotional and spiritual issues. We aim to build confidence, helping people to live as well as possible. We want to provide people with a chance to come and talk, to have both physical and emotional issues addressed, including discussing ‘advanced care planning’ where they can detail how they want to be treated and cared for going forward.

Make a Will Week Dinah’s story

Legacies are vital to us. They fund nearly 5 months of care a year for the in and out patients supported through Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia’s hospices. As we prepare for our annual Make A Will Week (15th to 21st May), the Teagle family from Blackwater share their story of Dinah… “Dinah was always busy” explains her devoted widower Fred, “she was a Mum and wife and very involved in the family business.” Sitting in the conference centre at Teagle Machinery, Fred and his youngest son Colin are reminiscing. “Mum looked after us really well” explains Colin. “She was caring, she worried about everyone else and loved to help those less fortunate than herself.”

Fred and his brothers run the family business, producing farm machinery for customers across the world. Today their sons oversee the firm that employs around 150 people and exports to more than 40 countries. Semi-retired now, Fred is full of admiration for his late wife who was also volunteer Treasurer of our St Agnes Support Group, “Dinah was a founding member and for 25 years worked extremely hard as a fundraiser so it wasn’t a surprise when she left some money in her Will to help ensure the comfort of patients. A legacy is about making a difference and it certainly will for Cornwall Hospice Care as the NHS contribution is so small. It’s a great comfort to the family that Dinah left this gift, doing something positive for a Cornish charity that she loved.” Colin, who says he has happy memories of his Mum dressed up for local carnivals, says everyone should have a Will, “It’s so important for the person and for those who are left behind and it provides an opportunity to remember family, friends and good causes. Mum would want Cornwall Hospice Care to carry on and flourish and this is her way of contributing to the charity’s future.”

Volunteer news: Volunteers remain at the heart of our charity, with more than a thousand people giving their time in a wide range of roles. Whether you visit one of our hospices, shops or fundraising events you’ll see our volunteers hard at work. Here’s a glimpse of what they’ve been up to and information about how you could join the volunteer army…

Awardees at the 25th anniversary presentation for St Austell Fundraising Group represented an incredible total of 339 years of fundraising commitment. The Marazion & District Support Group (below) marked their 25th birthday with an afternoon Cream Tea and Prosecco event, managing to raise a superb £1,730 in the process.

Some of our long standing volunteer fundraising groups have been celebrating their 25th anniversaries, with presentations of long service badges and yet more excuses to raise money for the charity.

The Downderry Fundraising Group (above) marked their anniversary at one of their popular Baked Potato Lunches where Tina Jefferis, Jennifer Powell Williams and Shirley Vickery celebrated having given the charity 132 years of voluntary service!

Ten enthusiastic staff from Cornwall Council’s Education, Health and Social Care Team recently gave us their time to help us blitz a corner of our warehouse in St Austell. The team split in two, with one half helping in the furniture shop while the others helped get an area full of bed parts put together, matching bedheads with frames and getting the beds ready to be sold.

This day of volunteering is part of our employee volunteering work, where we offer the opportunity for local companies and organisations to send a team of their

employees to us to help with a specific job or project. We celebrated National Apprenticeship Week this year with support from Devon and Cornwall Housing. They helped us with a project in the gardens at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice and kept smiling despite the wet weather in which they had to work. Our charity is governed by a Board of Trustees all of whom are volunteers. They give their time and skills to oversee the management of the charity and include Doctors, Accountants and business leaders. Sadly this year one of our longest standing trustees, Tony Geake, who with his wife Margaret, gave the land on which Mount Edgcumbe stands, died at the very hospice he helped to create. A passionate supporter of our work, Tony was enormously respected and will be sadly missed. He’s picture here with his wife Margaret in 2015 when HRH The Earl of Wessex visited Mount Edgcumbe Hospice to mark its 35th anniversary.

We’re always in need of more volunteers, especially to work in our shops and warehouse and as Van Drivers Assistants. We’ll also be looking in the near future for volunteers to help us with our new community project, which you can read about on page 3. To find out more visit www.cornwallhospicecare.co.uk or call in to one of our shops and have a chat with the volunteers who’re already involved. Everyone’s got a reason for helping and here’s just two comments from volunteers at our St Blazey shop; “My sister-in-law passed away at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice. She had cancer and was only 56. I wanted to do my bit to say thank you and this is how I do it. You also get to pick up a bargain and I rarely go home empty handed.” “We all get on so well together. We go out and enjoy meals together and we celebrate each other’s birthdays.”

Cornwall Hospice Care team shortlisted for a national medical award We’re celebrating news that a team from our charity have been shortlisted as finalists in the national BMJ Palliative and Hospice Team of the Year awards. The finals will be held in London in May recognising and celebrating the inspirational work of healthcare teams across the country. The team developed a project, collaborating with many other healthcare teams throughout the county, to develop and roll out consistent symptom management for patients with incurable illnesses, whatever their diagnosis. They’ve trained nearly a thousand people working in a range of care settings, to provide good symptom control to those who are dying. This has included hospital consultants, specialist nurses, ambulance crews, ward staff in community and acute hospitals, and those working in dementia units and nursing homes. We’ve also led a project to teach others to provide the training, using new ways of working and proving a lot can be achieved

with a small pot of money. Formal feedback from participants showed it improved their knowledge and confidence around caring for patients with advanced illnesses. All this was underpinned by the charity’s 24-hours-a-day/7-days-a-week advice line, which supports a wide range of health care professionals including those who have received training from the team. With such immediate support it means patients who are dying are given the right care at the right time and in the right place, whether that be at home, in hospital, in the hospice, a secure dementia unit or nursing home. Medical Director Dr Debbie Stevens says the award is well deserved recognition, “Being shortlisted for the final of these awards is a huge achievement for the team from our charity. The competition is always high and I’m delighted that the work we have been doing has attracted such recognition. I’m very proud that we have got this far, anything else will be a bonus.”

Retail news Our first charity department store is open in Truro

Opening of the Truro department store by Debbie McCrory of BBC Radio Cornwall. Our retail team have taken a giant step and opened our first department store. The huge shop in Pydar Street, Truro is packed full of pre-loved and new clothing and furniture and a host of different ranges from children’s items to linen and homeware. Situated at St Clement House, the store was a success the minute the doors opened and has provided a draw for the shoppers of Truro as shop Manager Simon Hatherall explains, “Many of our visitors have said this is just what Truro needs and have been very complimentary about what we are offering. We’ve got a wide range of donated items from furniture, to clothes, toys and things you need for your home.” The store is open seven days a week, from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays. The attached picture was taken at the opening of the Truro department store and shows BBC Radio Cornwall presenter Debbie McCrory cutting the ribbon alongside staff and volunteers, including members of the charity’s Trustee Board.

Celebrations as our new shop opens in Wadebridge We started the New Year by opening a new and exciting lifestyle shop in Wadebridge. The store in Molesworth Street, was officially declared open at the end of January by two long standing volunteers and will complement our furniture store further up the same road. The shop will ultimately replace the smaller community shop we run in the same street and offers a wide range of clothes, bags, shoes, smaller items of furniture, ornaments, glassware and much more besides. “This new shop gives us much more room to show off the wide range of donated goods we have on offer” says Business Development Manager Nina Kneil, “it’s very welcoming and we hope it’ll be the flagship of our medium sized charity shops in Cornwall.”

The shop was launched at a special preview evening when the Mayor of Wadebridge Councillor Pamela Starling was amongst the invited guests to take an early look. The following morning volunteers Pearl Sprules and Shirley Prescott cut the ribbon, which signalled the start of trading. Chief Executive Paul Brinsley says it’s important that we operate the biggest chain of charity shops in Cornwall, “Our shops raise around a million of the £5 million we need to provide the care we offer to patients and their families across Cornwall. The volunteers and staff who run them are vital to us as are the shoppers who so generously support our 31 stores and the host of others who donate goods to our cause.”

As Manager Sue Rawling explains, it’s looking stunning, “the bridal area is beautiful and we’re really pleased to be able to offer this specialist range in the town. We’ve also introduced good quality cheap clothing in set price sections to match tight budgets.” To keep our shops stocked and to collect and deliver furniture donations we have a fleet of vans that are now sporting a new eye catching livery. Featuring a map of Cornwall showing where our shops are and a message reminding people of the care they are helping to fund, the vans also match our exhibition trailer that attends events throughout the summer.
