LAUNCESTON We ask locals what their town means to them

Rebecca Perry, Owner OF EAGLE HOUSE HOTEL My husband has farmed here all his life and since marrying a Devon girl, we were delighted to buy the Eagle House last year and reopen it as a hotel. Launceston is a hard working town with a vibrant community and is proud to be the Gateway to Cornwall. The historic Norman Castle gives amazing panoramic views and provides a real focal point to the town. The hotel has given us the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people locally and from all over the world. I am always glad to recommend a visit to this gem of a town.

Chris Drake, Launceston Town Clerk on behalf of Launceston Town Council The gateway to the West, the ancient capital of Cornwall and a beautiful town. This is what comes to mind when thinking of what Launceston means. It is also much more… a thriving place with voluntary organisations providing the very backbone of the community. We are privileged to be able to call it home.

Sally Meredith, OWNER OF FRECKLES PET GOODIES We are the gateway to Cornwall. Launceston is only an hour’s drive to the beach or 30 minutes to the moors so we have the best of both worlds. I have lived here all my life and wouldn’t move to anywhere else. Where else can you say you have the moors and beaches on your doorstep?

Rachel, THE BUG & PIN TATTOO & PIERCING STUDIO We opened our Tattoo & Piercing Studio in Launceston’s Chings Alley in 2016 and we have been overwhelmed by the amount of support that we have received from the amazing people in Launceston. We are proud to be the only local body piercer and we now have customers regularly travelling to us from further afield which means even more trade for the town!

Spotlight on.. . Steeped in history and mystery, Launceston Castle is the focal point and iconic landmark of our town. Standing proudly on a large mound, the stone tiers tower high above our town. Boasting panoramic views of the rolling valley hills, you can enjoy them for yourself by climbing to the very top of the castle. With its beginnings dating back to the 11th century, the castle was rebuilt in the 13th century by Richard Earl of Cornwall. Reigning between 1227 and 1272, Richard valued the estates inherited in Cornwall due to the value of the local tin industry. He used Launceston Castle as a base and remodelled the castle along with the town during his time here. Over the years, the castle not only served as The Earl of Cornwall’s administrative centre, but also as a prison. It even played host to the United States Army during the Second World War. The castle is now an English Heritage site and offers a beautiful setting for a walk or a picnic. If you want to find out more, you can visit the onsite exhibition to view over 1000 years’ worth of the castle’s history. DID YOU KNOW? When the castle was a prison, its most famous inmate was George Fox, the founder of the Quaker movement. He was imprisoned here in 1656.

ARTS & CULTURE Home to famous Cornish poet Charles Causley, Launceston has been and continues to be a thriving hub of music, art, architecture and history.

Places to visit include the Lawrence House Museum and Zebediah’s Arts and Crafts Collective, which showcase the work of the town’s historical and present day artisans. Just out of town, there’s a renowned patchwork quilting centre at Cowslips Workshops, exhibitions of contemporary art at Terre Verte Gallery in Altarnun and the fantasy illustrators’ Lakeside Gallery near Treburley. Local writers gather at the Bell Inn to compare stories and there are frequent cultural events at the Town Hall. Another place to visit is St Mary Magdalene’s Church, which is listed as one of the 200 most architecturally important churches in the country. You are sure to find something interesting round every corner in Launceston, so keep an eye out to see what creativity you can spot around the town! HISTORICAL FACTS A collection of facts about Launceston you may not have known

• B efore the Norman Conquest, Launceston was the site of an AngloSaxon fortification. • Launceston Castle was built on the orders of Robert, Count of Mortain, who was the half-brother of William the Conqueror. • The castle was constructed in order to overawe the Anglo-Saxons after the Norman Conquest, but as far as we know it never came under serious attack. • The official name of the town is ‘The Borough of Dunheved otherwise Launceston’. ‘Dunheved’ refers to the settlement which grew up round the castle and ‘Launceston’ to St Stephens (Lanstephan in the Cornish language), which is on the other side of the River Kensey where the first settlement originated. • Launceston became an important market after the original market at St Stephens was transferred to Dunheved. • Two railway companies opened lines to Launceston in the 1860s. Launceston was on the Southern Railway line between Paddington and Padstow and it was also the terminus of the Great Western Railway line coming from London via Plymouth. • A new Town Hall and Guildhall were built in the 1880s, and still serve as the town’s administrative centre to this day. A recent refurbishment has provided an attractive venue for local events of all kinds.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 19 • Launceston has been the birthplace and home town of many distinguished citizens, the most recent being the well-known poet Charles Causley. In 1958 he was made a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and was awarded a CBE in 1986. Launceston holds an annual Charles Causley Festival to celebrate the poet and his works, which provides two days of entertainment and hospitality. • Lawrence House Museum is a National Trust property situated in Castle Street and is one of the fine group of Georgian houses there which includes the Eagle House Hotel. The Museum has a large collection of artefacts illustrating the history of Launceston, which was the capital of Cornwall until the 1820s.

Do not miss! Southgate Arch

Launceston Castle Gate

• T he Southgate Arch, the only surviving gateway of the three which existed in the 13th century after Launceston became the only walled town in Cornwall. • St Mary Magdalene Church, an early Tudor building with a rare, finely carved granite exterior and many interesting historical monuments within. • The town square, also known as Broad Street, which has recently been pedestrianised. The War Memorial of 1921 stands here and there is also a plaque commemorating the execution of the Catholic martyr, St Cuthbert Mayne. Under the square there is a large subterranean reservoir which was once a major source of drinking water for the town. • The remains of the Priory down by the River Kensey and the lovely old Priors Bridge crossing the river. • The Launceston Steam Railway which takes visitors for a few miles into the open countryside.

A hub of

creativity Discover Launceston’s talented artists and makers at Zebediahs Zebadiahs was once owned by Norman and Irene Preston, and was an art gallery for 20 years before their retirement in 1992. In 2017, their son John along with his wife Suzie restored the shop to its former glory and have turned it into a creative hub for the whole of Launceston. Defining itself as an unusual and exciting arts and crafts outlet, local artists and craftspeople not only provide the stock but also take it in turns to run the shop and gallery. This provides the rare opportunity for customers to be able to meet the makers in person. A wide range of wonderful and affordable items are on offer, from ceramics to jewellery, glass work to wood art and much much more. Many of the makers share an interest in upcycling; utilising reclaimed and recycled materials in their work. Even the shop fittings are lovingly painted junk furniture, helping to enhance the eclectic nature of the venture. Zebadiahs also proudly houses the only permanent art gallery in the town - The White Room Gallery - which, when not being hired by groups or individuals, presents a rolling programme of monthly themed exhibitions and regular art and craft workshops.
