DID YOU KNOW? The name ‘Mevagissey’ is a combination of the names of two Irish saints - St Meva and St Issey - joined by the word ‘ag’ which is Cornish for ‘and’.

Welcome to

Hello and welcome to the 2018 edition of Discover Mevagissey. Dating back to 1313, we are a little fishing village with a big heart, and our old-fashioned narrow streets are brimming with shops to explore, cafes to relax in and restaurants to whet your appetite. Our fishing heritage plays a big part of life here and you will find many eateries that offer local dishes using freshly caught fish from local fisherman who have landed their catch from in and around the magnificent twin harbour. With many places to visit, including Mevagissey's museum and aquarium (which you can find out more about on page 6), we are the perfect choice for families, couples, or retired visitors, and there are plenty of dogfriendly beaches nearby if your furry friend is coming too! The unique charm here will make your visit truly memorable, and we look forward to joining you as you Discover Mevagissey.

Mevagissey

We ask local business owners what Mevagissey means to them

Richard Jellard Owner OF THE Wheelhouse Restaurant & Guest House Mevagissey is a dream location for me. The working fishing harbour takes me back to my early days as a crab fisherman and with our exceptional location I see the boats arriving every day. Mevagissey means tradition, hard work and fresh fish daily, there is never a dull moment in this vibrant village.

FIVE OF OUR FAVOURITE

Mevagissey is a small village with a lot to give, and these simple ideas will ensure you get to experience it in a unique way that you will never forget.

Museum Boasting three floors of exhibits, learn about the intriguing past of life in the village at the Mevagissey Museum. The local fishing scene still plays a prominent role in the village today, and a visit to the museum will show you how it has evolved over the years. www.mevagisseymuseum.com

Gorran Haven Beach This safe-for-swimming beach is perfect for families, and is dog friendly too! Though they must be kept on a lead between Easter and September. Car parking is available as well as toilets, a beach cafe and a pub. The beach is accessible on foot from Mevagissey using the South West Coast Path.

WORLD OF MODEL RAILWAYS

Aquarium Housed in the old RNLI Lifeboat House, Mevagissey Aquarium has been a top place to visit since the 1950s. On your trip to the aquarium you can expect to find various species of local marine wildlife and find out more about them. It is free to enter the aquarium however donations are always appreciated to continue maintaining the premises for future generations.

Fish & Chips on the harbour wall Sitting in a restaurant definitely has its perks, but there’s nothing like enjoying a portion of Cornish fish and chips in the fresh sea air. So, find a good spot on the harbour and dig in but watch out for hungry seagulls!

A wealth of

KNOWLEDGE Step aside Amazon, roll over Waterstones, here comes Hurley Books! Beginning life when Amazon first opened its market place 12 years ago, owners of Hurley Books, Liz and Steve, quickly spotted that this was an area they could thrive in. Being an English student at the time, Steve sold paperbacks at his local market to help with costs, while Liz was a librarian and used to tracking down hard to find books. As the business grew, both left their jobs and opened a small shop. Originally in St Austell, they then moved to Charlestown until finally they found a place they could call their own in Mevagissey. Since then, the business has grown and today they stock a wide selection and equal split of new, used and well-loved books. You may not always find the obvious bestsellers or the new releases, but instead a curious selection of books you didn’t know you were looking for. There is also a next day delivery service, so if you are looking for a particular book they can track it down for you and order it in.

As well as books, you’ll find a good range of ephemera. Last year Steve branched into his love of vinyl, and they now have a large collection of LPs and singles. The majority are second hand and in excellent condition, but they stock new pressings too. Last year Liz and Steve took on the Tourist Information Centre, which was a perfect fit due to their extensive knowledge of Mevagissey and the help they give to tourists that come visiting. In their own words, “Mevagissey is a wonderful community and it's lovely to be able to help the people that want to come and share it with us.” Hurley Books can be found alongside the Tourist Information Centre at 3 Jetty Street, Mevagissey PL26 6UH enquiries@hurleybooks.co.uk www.hurleybooks.co.uk 01726 842200 DISCOVER MEVAGISSEY 21
