Porthleven is a small town with a big heart, and these simple ideas will ensure you get to experience it in unique way that you will never forget.

Morning stroll on the beach Start the day with an exhilarating walk on the beach. Breathe in the fresh sea air, listen to the hypnotic sound of waves crashing on the shore and watch the circling sea birds as they search for breakfast. With a hot coffee in hand, you may feel inspired to take your shoes off and brave the cold to make the first footprints in the sand.

The Porthleven Town Trail Fun for all the family, spend an afternoon finding out more about the fascinating history of Porthleven. Simply download the free Porthleven Town Trail app (available on Apple and Android) or pick up a £1 guide from one of the local shops and get exploring!

Fish and chips on the harbour head Sitting in a restaurant definitely has its perks, but there’s nothing like enjoying a portion of Cornish fish and chips in the fresh sea air. So, find a good spot on the harbour head and dig in - but watch out for hungry seagulls!

Enjoy an ice cream

(with Cornish clotted cream)

On a hot summer’s day nothing beats a Cornish ice cream with a dollop of clotted cream on top! Lots of places in the town offer an extensive ice cream selection, so try some new flavours and enjoy.

Watch amazing sunsets No sunny day in Porthleven is complete without watching the sun setting over the horizon. It’s a sight you won’t want to miss so go prepared with a blanket (and a bottle of wine!) find a spot on the beach and toast the glorious evening.

Do not miss While you may be praying for sunshine on your visit, a day of wind and rain here could actually turn into the highlight of your stay. At high tide visitors and locals alike congregate together to watch the spectacular sights of the Porthleven storms. Watch as the waves thunder against the cliffs and sweep over the pier, and feel exhilarated when the sea spray catches in the wind and covers you in a damp, salty mist. However much fun you have, it is always important to stay safe, so follow the coastguard’s instructions and never venture any further than they advise. When you’ve finished embracing nature’s force, head to one of the local cafes and enjoy a giant hot chocolate to warm you through. Perfection!

On foot

The Stables café serves hot drinks & snacks ▼

Though the South West Coast Path is on your doorstep, there are a number of other routes for you to explore during your stay. Here are some of our favourite suggestions which will ensure you see Porthleven and the surrounding area from all angles.

Penrose Penrose is the perfect route for all the family and is probably one of the most popular walks in the South West. In rain or shine, people from all over Cornwall come to experience this truly unique setting, which provides views of the Lizard Peninsula in one direction and across to Penzance in the other. Starting in the Penrose Car Park in Porthleven, this route will take you first around the front grounds of the National Trust house where you will find an old bathhouse and cows grazing in the fields.

When you have passed the café, the route will take you through the picturesque Penrose woods which are full of wildlife and have fantastic views across Loe Bar and Pool. Eventually you will come out on the famous coastal path which leads you back into Porthleven.

Not far from the start is The Stables café, serving a range of hot drinks and snacks. Take a snack with you on your walk or relax in the walled garden next to the cafe, which is open to visitors all year round.

Good for: Families Time: 1 hour 45 minutes 10

Higher Penrose A relatively new route, the National Trust have recently finished creating new paths throughout the Penrose estate. Higher Penrose takes you through the fields surrounding the woods and gives you excellent views of the coast throughout. Starting on Penrose corner next to the car park, instead of heading into Penrose you will walk along a dirt track towards Penrose farm, where signs will lead you through various fields and gates until you reach the vast fields overlooking the coast. Good for: Families Time: 1 hour 40 minutes

Penrose Estate

Don’t forget... Sensible footwear Your camera A waterproof coat (Autumn/Winter) Sun Cream (Spring/Summer) Money for a hot drink or an ice cream To take in the views!

Helston If you are looking for a gentle flat stroll, then a walk from Porthleven to Helston is for you. Starting off in Penrose car park, it is a simple walk into the next town which boasts a range of shops and cafes, and a beautiful boating lake with an abundance of swans, ducks and other waterfowl. This easy route is perfect for young children with bikes or scooters and is just the right length for them to get there and back without getting too tired! Good for: Families & cyclists Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Loe Bar A slightly extended version of the Penrose walk, Loe Bar is for those who don’t mind a longer route or perhaps getting a bit muddy along the way! Starting in Penrose car park, instead of walking through the woods to the coast path walk towards Helston. After about ten minutes walking you will see a big opening on the right which is where you will cross the bridge into Loe Bar woods. It can start to get a little muddy from here so make sure you wear suitable footwear!

The last leg of the journey takes you around the calm and tranquil Loe Pool, finally ending up at Loe Bar beach which you will walk across to get back onto the coast path and into Porthleven. Good for: Those who like a challenge Time: 2 hours 15 minutes A view across the lake at Loe Bar ▲

Walk through the woodland following the coast path signs which will eventually take you out into a field overlooking the vast Loe Bar beach. From here the route can seem to disappear but if you walk across the field to the bottom left hand corner you will see where you can continue on to the Pool.

homemade cakes, an amazing selection of local ice-cream and they are licensed. With comfy sofas and a woodburner inside, and tables that overlook the harbour outside, Nauti is the place to go whatever the weather!

We’ve found the perfect combination for a great day out, starting right here in the heart of Porthleven. What could be better than a stunning circular walk that begins with a hearty breakfast, takes in some fantastic coastal scenery and ends with a steaming cup of coffee, or an ice-cream, depending on the season? Here in Porthleven we are blessed not only to have a bustling harbourside, a beach to explore and cliff top walks but we also have a delightful National Trust-owned woodland walk just a few minutes from the town. One of our favourite ways to spend a day is stroll down to Nauti But Ice in Porthleven for a hearty breakfast. Ingredients are locally sourced and plates come piled with sumptuous culinary delights sure to set you up for the day ahead. A barista-made coffee washes it all down nicely. With a full tummy it’s time to head out on the cliff road for a brisk walk. Whether sunny or stormy this is a footpath with views that never fail to impress.

Opening times The Stables Cafe - Penrose Open Daily 10am to 4pm Easter to 31st October. (out of season, weekends and school holidays only)

As the cliff path ends so the Penrose Estate begins. A wide track winds its way around the Loe Pool, shaded by trees and teeming with wildlife. Half way through the walk you will come across The Stables café, nestled in a delightful courtyard, there is chance for further refreshment here if another coffee is the order of the day and an opportunity to pause, rest your legs and take in the view of the lake. Then it’s time to head home, an easy stroll on quiet roads will return you to the town.

the

taste of Porthleven

Home to the extremely popular Food & Music Festival held every April, Porthleven is now arguably one of the best food hotspots in the West. With an extensive range of fantastic restaurants and cafés to choose from, you are truly spoilt for choice here. You simply can’t beat relaxing with a glass of wine, watching the boats bobbing on the water as the sun sets. And, if you want a table with great scenery, you won’t be disappointed because there are lots of restaurants dotted around the town offering you a perfect view of the harbour. Don’t worry if you have little ones; there are many family-friendly restaurants which will ensure your visit is stress free and as easy as can be.

▲ Delicious slow cooked Primrose Herd pork belly at The Square. ▼ Anthony Worral Thompson, Porthleven Food & Music Festival Ambassador

Porthleven’s restaurants are unique, and along with showcasing the best of Cornish food they also use flavours from across the world to give dishes a real twist. Not only does Porthleven cater for all taste buds, but for all dietary requirements too. You won’t feel neglected with menus that ensure everyone’s needs are covered.

Our lovely little cafés are always a talking point with visitors too! If you are looking for a picnic to take to the beach, an ice cream stop or, of course, a traditional Cornish cream tea, the town’s cafés have it covered. You will also find that many of them are dog friendly, making your furry friends equally welcome! You can find out more about our restaurants and cafés on www.discoverportheleven.com ▲ Both relaxed and formal options are available. Pictured above is Seadrift on Fore Street.

meet the man

food We meet Simon Allott, head chef at Rick Stein’s Restaurant in Porthleven, who exudes bonhomie and a genuine love for food and people. Head Chef, Simon was inherited with the restaurant when it changed from Clay Quay to Rick Stein’s Restaurant in November 2014 and within six months was made head chef. “It’s a family restaurant,” says Simon, “and we want to make sure there is something for everyone. The meals all come from Rick’s books, particularly his ‘Long Weekends’ book. People see recipes from the book being cooked by chefs on TV and then they want to try them.” Though Rick’s ideas form the mainstay of the food served in the restaurant, the chefs are allowed to experiment, but before it’s served to customers Rick comes over to taste them. “At the end of the day it’s Rick’s name at stake,” reasons Simon. “We get told off if we do ‘cheffy’ things because Rick is very traditional. We

don’t add things for the sake of it so we keep things simple. Rick Stein’s restaurants focus on what people want.” All the food Rick offers is based on simplicity and most dishes have three elements. “It’s all about flavour rather than the visual and,” Simon laughs, “we actually had an email about ‘flower abuse’!” It would seem that Rick doesn’t hold with the current trend of adding pretty petals to dishes. The menu is constantly updated. “We change the menu every quarter but we also do make changes along the way depending on response. We are very receptive to the feedback we get,” explains Simon. “Currently, Salt and Pepper Prawns are proving to be a very popular choice.” The Porthleven restaurant is quite informal where families can come to eat and relax. Simon says tables are filled all year round with it being 23

busiest at lunch time during the winter months. But in the summer, the restaurant is a popular destination so Simon recommends booking ahead. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and trained to the highest standard. “We focus on service,” says Simon, “and put a lot of time and effort into training. I’ve always been of the opinion the waiter should be the person who can improve the meal. It’s a fantastic place to work too and it’s the only company I’ve worked for which focuses on people enjoying themselves at work. With happy customers and contented staff, Rick Stein’s place is a great place to eat. RICK STEINS AT PORTHLEVEN Mount Pleasant, Porthleven 01326 565636 www.rickstein.com

My Porthleven We ask locals what Porthleven means to them. ‘Home is where the heart is’ and my heart has definitely been given to Porthleven. I moved here nine years ago and have never looked back. I’m lucky to have travelled to many beautiful places but nothing beats Porthleven. I am always ready to come home. Its not just a Town with a beautiful working harbour, it’s like an extended family. It’s a hard working community, with businesses working together for the love and pride of their Town. Bev Plunkett - Property Manager at Helpful Holidays

When I was asked the question “What is Porthleven to me” I instantly thought ‘Home’ but of course it is much more. Porthleven is unique with its working picturesque harbour, steeped in history, full of real Cornish characters and a good community spirit with something always happening. A place I am happy to live, to call home and invite others to come and Discover Porthleven for themselves especially in the winter storm season. Michael Carter - Previous publisher of Discover Porthleven

Porthleven has not always been my home, but having been here for nine years, I can’t imagine living anywhere else. I love Porthleven and am proud to tell people that I am lucky enough to live and work here. Porthleven has a sense of community and I feel extremely privileged to run a business here, where we have amazing support from both local people and visitors – who often return time and time again. Katrina McCarron - Owner - You Beauty Salon

Porthleven, the most southerly port in the UK, is a town with a village heart. It is has a strong sense of community, and a thriving economy. You can walk across the beach, or around the historic harbour and feel its history. Porthleven has a lot to offer from cafés, restaurants and bars offering something for all; or you can browse the many independent shops, craft and art galleries. No matter if you are visiting Porthleven for a few hours or a day; you won’t be disappointed and will be eager to return. Andrew Wallis - Cornwall Councillor for Porthleven and Helston West

You may have seen the iconic Bickford-Smith Institute on the front of your newspaper when storms have been raging across the country, standing tall and proud as waves reach as high as the clock tower. Built in 1884 and standing 70ft tall, this magnificent building was funded by William Bickford-Smith and was intended to act as a literary institute and place of learning. In its early days the institute hosted a range of educational evenings and art exhibits, and has been at the heart of Porthleven since its creation.

THE FACTS • T he institute cost around £2000 to build, which today would translate into about £220,000. • The institute consists of the clock tower and reading room. • The four-faced clock was made by Benson of London, and each dial has a diameter of 1.29m (4ft 3in). • When it was first built it was home to live-in caretakers Mr and Mrs Burgess. • In 1911 a billiards table became the newest addition to the institute and eventually it became a men-only zone. • It is now home to the local Snooker Club and Porthleven Town Council offices.

Spotlight The clock itself is wound every Friday, and for the last 40 years has been taken care of by local resident Jeremy Mitchell. Born and bred in Porthleven, his earliest memories of winding the clock go back to when he was just three years old. “My Grandad Jack wound the clock back then and there was a big spiral staircase to the very top. I would go down with him every Friday and climb right to the top to help. I can still feel the adrenaline pumping now!” he says as he recalls looking down the turret. “It was a very long way down for someone so young!”. The responsibility of clock winder was given to Jeremy when he was just 15 years old, and he hasn’t looked back since. “I feel a sense of pride every time I walk past or look back on it out to sea when I’m out fishing in my boat. It still gives me a connection to my grandad, who was helping me wind the clock until he died at 89 years old”. Over the years, Jeremy has helped to maintain the clock by making its platforms more user friendly as well as helping to prevent water damage. He also stressed that thanks should be given to his deputies David Benney and his son Neythan, who often fill in in his absence.

Add some

sparkle We all love a bit of sparkle in our lives, and accessorising clothes with a few select pieces of individual jewellery is a fantastic way to breathe new life into an old outfit. So, for something a bit special that you won’t see anywhere else, why not pop in to see the designs produced by Clair and Paul Pennington at The Jewellery Workshop, Porthleven. Established in 2012, with premises situated on opposite sides of the harbour, The Jewellery Workshop have built up a fantastic reputation in the town over the past few years. As well as their studio showcasing handmade pieces and other local jewellery makers’ work, the workshop also runs classes all year round. The family business is proud to do things locally; producing, mending and adapting jewellery in-house and onsite, avoiding long waiting times, hidden shipping costs or the worry of items being lost in the post. There’s plenty they can do for you: ring resizing, rhodium plating, stone setting, cleaning and polishing, engraving, pearl knotting and threading or simply changing your watch battery – if it’s jewellery related, they can do it! Commissions and alterations are welcome too. In Paul’s words; “We make unwanted unfashionable pieces into contemporary designs without losing sentimental value.”

Have a go Every Monday All day class from 10am - 5pm 3 Techniques - Make a bangle, a stone-set ring and make a pendant in sterling. £95.00

While most of the jewellery is handmade onsite, they also stock other local artists’ work in addition to recognised brands including Festina, Junkers and Zeppelin watches. If you don’t see anything in store that takes your fancy, Clair and Paul can create bespoke jewellery to your exact specifications. As well as unique items, the couple also offer great service. A fast turnaround and competitive pricing have forged a strong relationship with their customer base, who know the job will be done to a high standard, to their expectations and on time. The shop is open every day – including Sundays – from March until October, with reduced hours during the quieter months. So, whilst you’re in Porthleven, pop in and have a look yourself.
