Welcome to

Loe Bar Beach

Hello and welcome to the 2018 edition of Discover Porthleven. A visit to Porthleven is always memorable, and there is a reason that people return to us year after year. Whether that’s because of our picturesque harbour, breathtaking coastline and beautiful walks, or our annual Food Festival which draws in thousands each year. Perhaps it’s the delicious dishes and award-winning restaurants, or enjoying a browse in our unique independent shops. Quite simply, there is always a reason to visit and always a reason to come back. You’ll find plenty to read about in this year's guide, including featured dishes from our talented chefs (page 13), some great ideas for staying active here (page 15) and you’ll get to meet Porthleven’s Harbour Master too (page 27). We hope this guide gives you a great basis to explore our town and discover your own reasons to love Porthleven, just as much as the people who live and work here!

We ask local business owners what Porthleven means to them

Sam Sheffield-Dunstan AMELIES RESTAURANT

ADRIAN & LEIGH SANTI THE ATLANTIC INN "We took one look at the Atlantic Inn's location, spoke to a few of the wonderful local people and decided this was the place to be. Nothing at all has changed, in fact this place is so wonderful we are never going to leave. We believe the people of Porthleven are the making of this very special community"

JOHN CRAYFORD QUAYSIDE FISH "Apart from being a beautiful part of the country to live in with so much on the doorstep, we get to meet some amazing people visiting us from all over the country who really appreciate what we have to offer down here, especially our delicious locally caught fish, shellfish and of course our award winning smoked fish"

"It’s the place where I put down roots with my business — but prior to that The Ship was the place where I would spend a cosy lunch and a pint with my Dad when he was still with us - so it’s very special. I love taking my dog Flo for walks along the cliffs and foraging to bring fresh ingredients back to the restaurant. I also love being by the sea and watching the fishing boats come back with the day’s catch (and my daughter jump off the harbour!) What better place could there be to work?"

CARLA REGLER - CARLA REGLER PHOTOGRAPHY & Gallery "Waking up to the sounds of the sea, the changing weather and of course the seagulls, ….. that’s what Porthleven means to me. Getting soaked by a wave and withstanding the wind, …..that’s what Porthleven means to me. Changing my life, creating new friends, a home, a business, maybe two or three…. that’s what Porthleven means to me. New inspirations, new creations, new challenges everyday…. that’s what Porthleven means to me. But would I change it, no not at all….. because Porthleven is home to me!" DISCOVER PORTHLEVEN 5

FIVE OF OUR FAVOURITE

Porthleven is a small town with a big heart, and these simple ideas will ensure you get to experience it in a unique way that you will never forget. Crowds flocked to Porthleven back in October 2017 and were treated to a wonderful show by Storm Ophelia

PAMPER YOURSELF Holidays should be all about unwinding and nurturing yourself, so why not enjoy a relaxing massage, tailored to your specific needs, in the You Beauty treatment room in the heart of Porthleven? Get a 1 hour massage for the price of 45 minutes if you mention "Discover Porthleven" upon booking (conditions apply).

STORM WATCHING While you may be praying for sunshine on your visit, a Porthleven storm could actually turn into the highlight of your stay. Watch as the waves crash against the cliffs and sweep over the pier. Feel exhilarated when the sea spray catches in the wind and covers you in a damp, salty mist. During the fun, always be sure to keep a safe distance as storms by the coast can be very unpredictable!

A BREW WITH A VIEW A good quality cup of tea or coffee always goes down a storm, and Porthleven is the perfect setting for a relaxing sip while watching the boats bobbing in the harbour. If you want a great brew with a fantastic view, just visit one of our cafes for a real treat.

Homemade scones at The Harbour View Cafe. Note: Jam first, then the cream!

Nothing beats a Cornish cream tea - and most of our lovely cafes and restaurants offer freshly baked scones, Cornish clotted cream and yummy strawberry jam which combine to make an absolute treat! Wash it down with a cup of tea and you can’t do any better. Just make sure it’s done in the proper Cornish way... jam first, then cream! Wonderful brews and equally amazing views at Origins Harbour Head Cafe

WATCH THE SUNSET OVER THE PIER As the sun slowly disappears behind the horizon and casts its beautiful colours across the sea, take a deep breath and relax. A spectacular sunset is always a sight to behold, but a sunset over Porthleven pier is a memory to carry with you forever. 6 DISCOVER DISCOVERPORTHLEVEN PORTHLEVEN

Theme: Anti Plastic. Fantastic!

This year’s festival theme is Anti Plastic. Fantastic! That means the organisers will be doing whatever they can to minimise single-use plastic at the Festival and sharing that message with festivalgoers across the site. As well as a Green Charter that suppliers and stall holders will have to sign up to when they book a spot, the team will also be introducing non-plastic cups at the festival bars and encouraging local businesses to find alternatives to plastic. There’ll be large waste artworks to help raise awareness of the plastic problem, including the 30ft Surfer’s Against Sewage SAS Warship made entirely from plastic waste collected around the UK. Visit porthlevenfoodfestival.com for more details and to purchase tickets. DISCOVER DISCOVERPORTHLEVEN PORTHLEVEN 9

GETIN PORTHLEVEN ACTIVE Porthleven is a small town with big opportunities for keeping active on holiday. With so many places to explore around the town, we’ve got some energetic ideas for getting out on foot, by bicycle or out to sea during your stay.

CYCLING

Although the South West Coast Path isn’t the best terrain for cycling, there are plenty of routes you can find around Porthleven which are great for biking holidays. As well as being good for walking, Penrose estate is popular with cyclists. If you want an easy ride, Porthleven to Helston is flat and good for those with little legs. For more of a challenge, take the route from Porthleven right around Loe Pool, Cornwall’s largest natural freshwater lake. Routes around Loe Pool are graded and colour coded by difficulty to help you choose which route is best for you. If you fancy hiring bikes while you’re here, contact Porthleven Cycle Hire. www.porthlevencyclehire.co.uk 01326 561101

WATERSPORTS

If you are holidaying in Cornwall then trying your hand at some form of watersports is a must. From stand up paddleboarding (SUP) to surfing, canoeing to kayaking, there are plenty of options in and around Porthleven. It can be dangerous to go it alone with seafaring activities, so choosing a business with qualified instructors means you can ensure your safety and, just as importantly, make sure you have fun! Contact Vertical Blue Adventures for a day out on the ocean that you won’t forget. www.verticalblue.co.uk 07551 074488

Walking

If you are staying here then you are lucky enough to have the South West Coast Path right on your doorstep, and Porthleven is the perfect starting point for a trek following the shoreline. With Porthleven as your starting point, a nice easy route leads you to Poldhu Cove towards the Lizard; and a more challenging route in the opposite direction takes you to Rinsey Cove, where you can spot some magnificent engine houses on the way. Penrose Walks, owned by the National Trust, is also a very popular route. Taking you round the front grounds of the grand Penrose Estate, you will find an old bath house and cows grazing in the fields. From Penrose Estate, you can carry on round Loe Pool back along the cliff to Porthleven or walk to Porthleven’s neighbouring town of Helston. DISCOVER PORTHLEVEN 15

A PLACE FOR ALL THE

FAMILY

Sitting in an idyllic position by Porthleven harbour, here at Nauti we have plenty to offer visitors all day long and all year round. We pride ourselves on being a place where everyone is welcome. Whether you and the kids stop for an ice cream after a day at the beach (sandy feet welcome!) or if you pop in for a cream tea after a walk round the harbour with the dog, there is always a reason to visit. If you fancy a lazy morning in bed, you don’t have to worry about missing breakfast in Porthleven, as we serve up an extensive and delicious brunch menu from 9am - 3pm. From a full ‘Cornish’ breakfast to fresh waffles, there is plenty to choose from to satisfy all tastes and requirements; including vegan and gluten free options.

Moving through to the afternoon, Nauti is the ideal place to stop for a light lunch or tea and cake as you sit by the harbour and watch the world go by. We are also well known for our extensive Roskillys Cornish ice cream selection - and you will definitely be spoiled for choice! We also use many other Cornish suppliers to create our menu including meat from Dales Butchers in Helston, fish from Kynance Cornish Crab and fresh bread from Baker Tom. As well as our cafe, we have a pizza restaurant next door - Go Nauti. There is nothing better than watching the Porthleven sunset, especially if you can enjoy it at the same time as munching on a freshly baked pizza on our terrace. Go Nauti opens again from Easter 2018. Hidden in the depths of the popular Penrose estate, you’ll also find our sister cafe The Stables, serving hot drinks, cakes and snacks. Feel at home at

Harbour View Situated at Breageside between the 17th century Ship Inn and the historic Lime-kiln, we meet the new owner of Porthleven's Harbour View Café, Penny, who took over in early December 2017.

Homemade Fresh crab soup cakes & SCONES & sandwiches

Being the new guys in town, Penny reiterates the importance of ensuring they always listen to what their customers want. “We are always looking for feedback from locals and visitors alike. It’s important for us to know that we are doing our best to make every visit here an enjoyable one, and if there is something we can do a little differently then we will always listen and take it on board.” Harbour View also boasts an outdoor terrace, meaning you can enjoy a Moomaid of Zennor ice cream in the summer as you watch the world go by, or shelter inside as you warm yourself with Penny’s famous crab soup. Even more exciting, the crab sandwich served with a glass of Prosecco has been kept on from the previous owners menu. So next time you take a stroll around the harbour why not pop in and say hello? Keep an eye out for Stumpy the one footed Seagull, the mascot at Harbour View!

After a short break in the catering industry, Penny has returned to something she knows and loves, and what better place to start a new business venture than in Porthleven. “Having been away for the last five years, I needed to come 'home' to Cornwall and back doing my own thing" says Penny "so when this place came up for sale I knew I had to go for it”. The menu focuses on simple, home cooked food - and that’s the ethos that Penny, along with employees Jo and Kizzy, would like to bring to Harbour View. “We want people to feel at home here. We don’t try to be too extravagant and we want it to be a place where everyone feels welcome - whether you want to bring children or dogs! We even have a café mascot - Stumpy the one footed seagull!”.

A refreshing incentive

It’s a sad fact that plastic waste, particularly in Cornwall, has an impact on our environment - and not a good one. We are choking the sea with plastic, killing seabirds, fish and mammals in their natural habitat by simply not being more mindful of the way we dispose of our waste. When a group of volunteers in items such as straws, take-away Porthleven took part in an cups, water bottles and bags with annual harbour clean last more viable alternatives. PORTHLEVEN F A C T S HISTORICAL

Our little town is steeped in history, which you can feel and see even from a short walk around the harbour. Take a look at the following facts to find out more about the secrets of our town - and don’t forget to visit Out of The Blue just by the Football Club for a display of Porthleven through the years.

orthleven used to be divided between Sithney and P Breage - before it became its own Parish in 1844.

I n the 18th century the name Port Elvan appears before verbally morphing into Porthleven some time later.

he town made a living through fishing, farming T and mining during the 18th century.

There is a history of smuggling in Porthleven.

etween 1806 and 1810 eleven ships were B wrecked between Mullion and Porthleven, where 200 lives were lost.

orthleven’s prosperity used to depend on a P successful pilchard season. One night in 1919, there was a record catch of 162,000 between three boats!

Porthleven in the 1890s - boat building was the town's main trade

alt tax made it difficult for the poorer S inhabitants of Porthleven to preserve pilchards that kept them from starvation during the winter. Salt tax was later abolished in 1825.

he houses along Bay View Terrace were once T known as ‘Buenos Aires’. These were named after a ship that was wrecked nearby, and its timbers were used to construct the buildings.

orthleven harbour and most of the buildings P around it date from 1825.

I n the population survey of 1811, Porthleven had 63 dwellings mainly inhabited by fisherman and miners, with a population of 220. In 1879 the population had grown to 1259. Today it is around 3200.

orthleven Coastguard Station was built in 1866 P and housed the Rocket Lifesaving Apparatus designed by Henry Trengrouse. This equipment saved 104 lives over 60 years.

he Bickford Smith Institute was built in 1884 T and is 70ft tall. It cost around £2000 to build, which today would translate into about £220,000. It is now home to the local snooker club and Porthleven Town Council offices.

any years ago when Porthleven had no telephones M or radios, news from around the world was brought to Porthleven by an occasional traveller.

oat building was a popular trade in the 1800s. B Kitto & Sons were the principal boat builders in Porthleven. DISCOVER DISCOVERPORTHLEVEN PORTHLEVEN 23

MEET THE HARBOUR

MASTER Porthleven’s harbour is arguably the focal point of our famous town, but what goes on behind the scenes? We meet Phil Ward, the man behind the day to day running of the harbour, to find out what being Harbour Master really involves. How long have you been Harbour Master? I’ve been the Harbour Master since 2002. I joined Porthleven Harbour and Dock Company in 1995 and helped with general harbour maintenance until the previous Harbour Master retired, and I took over. What does the role involve? The role involves making sure the harbour is kept up to date and maintained. Porthleven is well known for its storms so it’s vital that the baulk (harbour defence gate) is properly reinforced. I also give the go ahead to any boats that wish to come and go from the harbour, which is important as it’s my job to assess the safety of the conditions out to sea.

What does the role mean to you? It means a lot to me. I grew up in a fishing family and would always be out catching mackerel as a youngster. I was a fisherman myself in the late 70’s and 80’s and never thought that one day I would be in charge of the harbour myself! How has the role changed over the years? The role is completely different than when I took it on due to so many new rules and regulations. There is a lot of red tape surrounding the fishing industry at the moment making it difficult for local fishermen to make a living. From bans on certain fish to limits on days allowed out at sea, there is a lot to be adhered to. Years ago it was easy to make a living as a fisherman but unfortunately all these changes have meant that the industry is struggling. What does Porthleven mean to you? Four generations of my family have lived in Porthleven so it means a great deal to me. It’s a very special place to live and work and I’m proud to call it my home.

PORTHLEVEN TOWN BAND A registered charity, the band’s ethos is to promote and enhance the musical ability of everybody in the village, particularly young people. And their ethos is well and truly adhered to, with beginner band ‘Band Builders’ and intermediate ‘Training Band’ in place before moving up to senior band. It is free to join Band Builders and suits those with little or no experience. The current band master, Tom Bassett, has held the position for 6 years and in that time has taken the band from strength to strength. With two contests a year, both regional and national, the 30-strong senior band have recently been promoted to third section which is a great honour and a big achievement for our little town!

Tom’s hard work with the band has also secured them some excellent engagements, including weddings, concerts, and kicking off the ever popular Masked Ball. Porthleven Town Band has seen generations of families throughout the years, with a few members currently the 8th generation of players. There are also some extremely devoted players; Russell Coles, who is now retired and a trustee of the band, was a member for over 60 years! With planning permission having been granted for a brand new band room for all the players Band master Tom Bassett

Succulent Lamb with a difference Discover delicious Cornish Lamb – reared in Porthleven’s pastures for incredible flavour and texture

Based at Trewithick Farm just outside of Porthleven, you will find first generation farmers Ryan and Steve, who took over the 500 year old tenant farm in 2016 with the accompaniment of their sheepdog Henry and flock of beautiful breeding ewes. Between them, they began The Cornish Lamb Co. which is quite simply beautiful succulent Cornish lamb farmed and reared sustainably for you to enjoy. With a mixture of three different breeds of ewes on the farm, there are 3 lambing periods each year which ensures a continuous supply is available. Steve and Ryan with Adam Henson (centre) from BBC Countryfile in which The Cornish Lamb Company made a recent appearance.

The Cornish climate produces lush meadows, and their lambs are 100% grass and forage-fed. Letting them grow at their natural pace results in succulent, quality meat with fantastic flavour and very little fat (plus healthier higher levels of omega-3, linoleic acid and minerals). You can buy Cornish lamb directly from their farm, or every Friday at Penzance Farmers Market. They also sell at markets in Devoran, Breage and Pendeen; and you’ll see their Cornish lamb on the menu at top local restaurants. You needn’t miss out on Cornish lamb if you live “upcountry” either, as they offer a Lamb Post service, sending meat by overnight courier to anywhere in mainland UK. The lamb is wrapped in insulating sheep’s wool, ensuring it keeps cool and fresh on its journey. With a recent appearance on Countryfile, it’s clear to see that they are making a real name for themselves here in Porthleven and far beyond! To find out more, or to order your lamb box, call 07814 780758 or email enquiries@cornishlamb.co.uk. Porthleven’s hidden gem If you’re visiting Porthleven you will naturally be drawn to the shops dotted around the harbour head, but hidden just a little way up salt cellar hill are the Salt Cellar Workshops, which are home to a handful of unique artisan businesses. Worded by Julia Schofield from Julia Schofield Jewellery, one of the buildings current tenants. An evocative smell of tarsoaked timbers carries you perfectly into the heart of old Porthleven when you enter these workshops. Thirty years ago, Claire Francis and Geraldine Thomas took on the lease of a historic, deserted building, and turned it into one of the oldest and most original craft centres in Cornwall. No trip to Porthleven is complete unless you’ve visited. Looming over the harbour balks, the huge building takes

the brunt of the fiercest winter storms, but inside and year round, the two floors are a place of imagination and endeavor. You still find Claire (a stylish hatter) and Geraldine (awardwinning basket-maker) at work. Other makers and artists have come and gone over the years leaving their imprint, or stayed, like Fee, who makes original fleece clothing, joining them shortly after they opened. Currently Nick, who carves in slate, welcomes you to his

creative space as you enter, and up the wide stairs you can find Gilly who re-canes chairs and furniture, Jan who paints celebrated pictures, and Julia who has been designing and making jewellery in west Cornwall for nearly twenty years. Withy baskets, driftwood furniture, cards, glass, mosaic tiles and many a wondrous thing decorate the spaces in between, providing an unusual trove of gifts and presents, all hand-made and all distinctly Porthleven.
