Hello! S

ince publishing the first edition of Launceston Life, we have had an overwhelming response from our readers and advertisers so a big thank you for all the support, we couldn’t do it without you.

Also a big congratulations to Sophie Brain who won our front cover competition and has done a fantastic job in drawing our magnificent castle. Visit our website to view all the other fantastic entries! Not long after the first edition went to print, I had a knock on my door and in walked Jim Edwards, who if you don’t know is a fascinating gentleman with a wealth of knowledge about the history of Launceston, the people, buildings, events and so much more. We had a good chat and Jim shared stories and facts, including what he knew about my family history. It was a simple gesture that moved me to tears. After this discussion we decided on a new feature for the upcoming editions, and you can find our brand new Launceston History column on page 25. As we approach the Christmas season, you will find two pages dedicated to various services and events from our Churches, all who welcome anybody to come and celebrate with them this year. We also hear from Launceston Central Councillor Gemma Massey on page 13, who tells us all about the efforts of the community in recent months and those to follow. There is much more packed into this edition too, so get settled on the sofa with a hot chocolate and enjoy. The team here wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and we look forward to seeing you all in 2019!

Tesco present the Foodbank with a freezer and cheque from a staff fundraising event.

With Christmas fast approaching, Launceston Food Bank find themselves at their busiest point of the year, with the appeal for food and extra treats such as chocolate, sweets and biscuits as important as ever. These small extras that many of us take for granted are added to food parcels given to those in need during this festive season, to make them really special. Launceston Food Bank was opened 4 years ago in Newport Industrial Estate, and is run by a dedicated team of volunteers from Monday - Friday, 10am to 12pm. Since then it has worked with schools, churches, groups and agencies to assist local people and their families with food in times of crisis. At present, the main cause of food crisis is low income, with many families barely making ends meet with the demands of high private rents, council tax, large water and energy bills plus the price of fuel and food ever increasing.

Staff and volunteers welcome surprise visitor Lisa from Pirate FM.

Funding is essential to the Foodbank if they are to continue helping our local families, so they also opened up a charity shop, selling everything from clothes to saucepans, shoes to bedding. All items sold in the shop are donated once again by the very generous community; and all profits are used to keep the Foodbank open and accessible to all local people who need it.

“The myth that ‘anybody can come and ask for food’ is exactly that” says Yvonne King, director of Launceston Foodbank. “We will never turn people away, but strive to provide help for them at a time when they need support”. Food is donated to the foodbank by the very generous community, who drop items into the supermarket collecting boxes. All the food is then logged in by the volunteers, dated and placed onto shelves ready to be packed in boxes when needed.

So this year when out shopping for your festive food - why not purchase one extra item and place this in any Foodbank collection box or drop it down to them directly. Your kindness makes such a difference. Launceston Foodbank wishes you all a very happy, peaceful Christmas

spirit!

by Gemma Massey Cornwall Councillor for Launceston Central

I was thrilled to receive the new Launceston Life through my door back in September. I know how much hard work had gone in to continuing our local community publication and it did not disappoint! Reading through the pages, it reaffirmed to me the strong community spirit within our beautiful town; from local businesses to updates from Cornwall Councillors and our Town Council, not forgetting the charity events and updates. It was a joy to read. I have been incredibly fortunate to see this first hand in my role as Cornwall Councillor for Launceston Central. As an elected representative of our town, what I do is incredibly varied. From case work (helping local residents with all of their issues ranging from planning applications to parking, fly tipping to anti social behaviour); Town Council meetings (all of which are listed online and open for all local residents to attend); meetings down at County Hall; and group work with local organisations. I love my role and feel honoured to represent the people of Launceston. It never ceases to amaze me the incredible selfless residents we have within our community. You will all be aware of the incredible fundraising efforts of both Councillor Val Bugden-Cawsey and also Gareth Lancaster. The support they have received from the community is a real testament to them both. But the fundraising doesn’t stop there. Many groups

and organisations are working hard to make our community that little bit better, from litter picks to volunteering in the grounds of Coronation Park. Over the last 6 months I have arranged a mixture of litter picks, weeding, painting and planting, and have been supported by not only colleagues but many local residents who just wanted to give a little bit back to the local community. It is so wonderful to see people coming together for the common good of our town. As the winter months approach, the sense of giving doesn’t stop. Extra donations are now flowing in to support our local Foodbank, the Chamber of Commerce and their volunteer’s will be donning their thermals to make sure our towns festive lights are pretty as a picture, the Central Methodist Church are planning the open Christmas Day Lunch and much more. Coming from a large city and now making Launceston my home, such events always fill me with joy and a sense of community. To see the town come together and to witness the comradery really does make it feel like home. I plan to have more litter picks in the spring and the details of these will be shared wherever possible, but if you would like to get involved and help make a difference, please do get in touch with the Town Council. Wishing you all a happy festive period!

Doggy Trails for Waggy Tails

1. Your starting point is the free carpark at the rear of Calstock Village Hall (PL18 9QA). Follow the lower road past the Tamar Inn and bear right, taking the lane to your left walking alongside the river. 2. This quiet lane offers you a dramatic view of the railway viaduct. Pass a boat yard and admire interesting riverside homes along the way. The tarmac lane leads to a row of cottages on your left. This is where you will find the pottery shed. 3. The tarmac lane now ends and splits. The road track ahead leads to a converted engine house owned by The Landmark Trust, and you can take a longer steeper route to Cotehele through the woodland and plantation. 4. My favourite way from here is to proceed on the stony track leading left and uphill to follow the river. The broad walkway provides glimpses through the trees of the Tamar and the railway viaduct. Discover a small chapel and read about the escape of Richard Edgcumbe from the troops of Richard III. 5. Continue along the well defined track until you reach the quay. Here you will find the tea room and explore the historic quay. Next follow the tarmac road which is flanked by bulrushes to a level path alongside the Morden Stream. 6. Cross the wooden bridge to the wildflower meadow to the Mill where you can buy a bag of wholemeal flour. Sadly, dogs are not allowed in the Mill.

News from LAUNCESTON TOWN COUNCIL

I mentioned in our last update that during the summer heatwave we had been ordering our Christmas lights. Now here we are in the depths of winter, and as you sit and read this edition of Launceston Life, the Christmas lights are in place and lighting up the town.

The latest from Launceston Town Council

We have worked closely with the Chamber of Commerce to ensure that the town looks its best and with the centrepiece tree in the Town Square, I hope we have provided a display that we can all be proud of. We will also have had the return visit of the Heart FM Christmas Market, which at the time of writing was looking to be even bigger and better than last year! Those of you who have regularly read our articles both in Launceston Life and previously in the Link, will know that for quite some time now the Town Council has been working with Cornwall Council as we continue to explore ways to ensure a continued library service is provided for the town. I have long looked forward to being able to announce that the library service would be devolved to the Town Council, and I am delighted to say that the time has now come! The Town Council has agreed to take on the operation of the Library and Information Service thereby ensuring that this much needed service is maintained and possibly even improved. The Town Council worked very hard to ensure that any proposals were the best for the town, and I am confident we have achieved this. The finer legal details are now with our solicitors and I look forward to providing exciting future updates as the process progresses. The acquisition of the library will mean that the Town Council will be looking to increase its precept, but it is felt that this is the right thing to do as it will allow those important services to remain in the town but also ensures another property

asset for the town, protecting its future. The Remembrance events that the town hosted this year were quite incredible, and on Remembrance Sunday the huge crowds that came out to show their respect was testament to all that we know this town and its people has to offer. The work of the Royal British Legion and all of the youth groups and organisations that paraded ensured that the day was marked with the utmost dignity. It was a moving and humbling experience and one that I and the Town Council were very proud to be a part of. The Town Council continues to work hard to provide a range of events for all ages and since our last update we have now installed a 7 metre cinema screen at the Town Hall. This will be used along with the improved sound and lighting system we already have to make sure that the venue continues to offer the widest range of entertainment. We have some incredible acts coming to town, and following on from the successful (and hilarious) visits of the comedians Henning Wehn and Tom Allen, laughs will keep on coming in the New Year as both Mark Steel and Rich Hall will be coming to Launceston. Our Properties Manager, Mr David James, has been working with the owners of the Leisure Centre and has agreed a contract whereby the Town Council will be taking on the contractual

grounds maintenance at that part of Coronation Park. This will ensure that the works are completed to a high standard and on a regular basis and also allow us to respond quickly to any issues that may arise. In addition to these works, the Town Council will also be taking on the planting at the War Memorial as we work alongside the In Bloom volunteers who provide the wonderful floral displays around the town. We have now successfully recruited two new colleagues to our Tourist Information Centre (TIC), and we are delighted to welcome Mr Ewan Murray as our TIC Manager, and Mrs Lauren Greene who is joining us as a TIC Assistant. Both colleagues have settled in extremely well and are already establishing themselves in their new roles, working alongside Mrs Ruth Maunder, who many of you will know in her role as TIC Assistant. Ruth brilliantly ran the TIC for long periods of time during the recruitment process and beyond and is passing all of her knowledge and expertise to our new staff members. Please call in and say hello to the team, they are always happy to welcome visitors and tell you all of the exciting things that are happening in and around the town. Thank you for taking the time to read about what the Council has been doing and please remember that you can call, email or visit us in person if there is any information or updates you would like. And finally, may I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at the Town Council.

On our doorsteps for decades

Did you know Launceston Parish have been publishing a magazine since at least 1891, and possibly even before that?

Advertisers ranged from Town Hall events, leather merchants, lamp makers, pharmacists, dentists, doctors and haberdasheries.

As mentioned in the introduction, a visit to our Launceston office from Jim Edwards has led us to this discovery, and we have been delving deep into our towns rich history since. After hours spent browsing comprehensive reference collections in Launceston Library, we found that a magazine has served the town of Launceston since the late 1800s. One of the first editions was named ‘The Trigg Major’, which was published by W.S.Cater & Co of Church Street. Back then it could be bought for a penny, which in today’s currency would equate to £1.50. This rose to 2p in 1927. In the early editions the editor R.H. Payne would regularly include a ‘thank you’ to the advertisers who supported each edition. A lot changes in a century however that fact still remains the same, and our advertisers and community champions are still absolutely paramount to the success and production of the current editions. If you want to know more about your own family history in the town, perhaps the building you live in, or architectural feature you have an interest in, you will find a wealth of information in the reference section of our town library.

L-R: Bamboo Toothbrushes, Beeswax Food Wraps and Reusable cups available at The Byre

It won’t have escaped anyone’s notice that reducing plastic waste is currently high on the agenda both nationally and countywide. With big beach clean up operations, plastic free straws being introduced and tax added to plastic carrier bags, the measures that have been taken are by no means unnecessary in a changing world. With surrounding towns like Camelford making a good case for being plastic free, we wanted to raise the profile in our own town and see what some of the community and local businesses are doing to look after our environment. You’ll find beautifully designed reusable cups from The Byre, as well as beeswax food wraps. They now also stock bamboo toothbrushes! There is 50p off all tea and coffee from The Green House when you bring in a reusable cup. No.8 Cafe and The Green House have both switched to paper straws, and The Green House also have sustainable charity bamboo straws for sale. There are free tap water refills at Costa Coffee, The Green House, No.8 Cafe and Little Bakehouse. New and improved equipment at Launceston Recycling Centre. A new Free To Collector Launceston Facebook page has been set up so that items people no longer need can be put up for free. This helps ensure items that could be of use are not thrown away and continue happy lives with a new owner! Search "Free To Collector Launceston" on Facebook. Veg in the Shed at Pennygillham Industrial Estate sell organic vegetables, have a plastic free policy and sell refills of various washing powder and cleaning products.

If you or anyone you know is doing their bit for the environment around Launceston, we want to hear from you! Contact hello@launcestonlife.com to appear in our next edition showcasing your hard work.

Happy 60th Birthday to Launceston Male Voice Choir! 2019 will be a very important milestone for Launceston Male Voice Choir. Currently over 50 members strong, they will be celebrating 60 years of male voice singing in many venues both within Cornwall and beyond. The choir raise thousands of pounds every year for a wide range of local charities and are always ready to give support where necessary. █ If you have an interest in male choral singing, why not join them on Wednesday evenings in Central Methodist Hall from 7.30pm. You will be made most welcome!

FOLK2FOLK CEO Giles Cross

Born in Launceston in January 2013, FOLK2FOLK quickly grew to become Cornwall’s leading Peerto-Peer lending company. Today, though still a small business, FOLK2FOLK is multi-award winning and the UK’s 3rd largest Peerto-Peer lending company to business, in terms of money lent. In the space of only five years, FOLK2FOLK and its community of Lenders have injected over £260m into hundreds of local and rural businesses nationally. The company is still proudly headquartered in Launceston. In simple terms, the company facilitates a fair exchange between lenders and borrowers. It matches local businesses, who may not fit the criteria of traditional lenders but who

are seeking loans to grow, develop or diversify, with individual investors seeking to supplement their income by earning a great interest rate. But there are wider implications that go beyond just the borrower and the lender. A broader ecosystem is created consisting of legal and accountancy firms, local authorities, MPs, Chambers of Commerce, Local Enterprise Partnerships, surveyors, land agents, local cooperatives, leisure and tourism platforms, interest groups, community associations, charities, business groups and banks – who all combine into The Local Lending Movement which facilitates rural business growth on the ground. There may also be downstream benefits resulting from The Local Lending

Movement that positively impact local communities. By accessing finance to grow, develop or diversify, a borrower may create or sustain jobs, retain local talent stemming its tide to the cities and attracting people into the area, new homes are built and house prices are stabilised. Other local businesses may benefit as a result and from being part of the inevitable supply chain; the demand for better communication and connectivity increases, local bus routes retain their relevance and local schools and services are maintained. It's quite possible that The Local Lending Movement, as a mechanism that enables local investment, is one answer to securing long-term economic prosperity for rural Britain.

... with Ian Bellamy Hi Ian, can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background? I’m Ian Bellamy, Director and owner of Unique Mobility, I grew up on a dairy farm at Lewdown where my family has farmed for 3 generations. I’m married to Sarah with 3 amazing children and live near North Petherwin where I’m also a Parish Councillor, and Director & Trustee of The Little Red Bus.

What makes you Unique? We literally do everything to do with mobility and making life easier for the people in our area all under one roof, a true one stop shop. Many dealers will only provide a handful of products that come “out of a box” but we specialise in bespoke equipment, if you’re facing a challenge with a day to day task and there isn’t anything out there to help then we will try and make it or we can adapt an existing piece of equipment so it works for you. This is something we have become quite well known for and the part of the business I love most. Although scooters and wheelchairs are a traditional part of the business we also do stairlifts, wet-rooms, car adaptations, Rise and Recline chairs and beds, pressure relief and cushions, prescription Powerchairs and Manual wheelchairs, access equipment, ceiling and mobile hoists, nursing home supplies, Hire, Paediatrics, sensory and music therapy to name but a few as well as having full workshop facilities in both showrooms with manufacturer trained engineers.

How did you get into Mobility? I had my own business installing wet-rooms and level access showers and could see the struggles my customers faced with day to day tasks and thought, there must be equipment out there that would help. After looking at some suppliers I found a small unit at Newport Industrial Estate and 6 weeks later I opened Launceston Mobility in 2001. So have you developed the business around the changes in the mobility industry? Absolutely, when I started we supplied mostly the general public with only a few hundred items from a small showroom and 1 member of staff. We now regularly supply over 20,000 products to the public, Councils, Schools and the NHS from 3 locations and have 19 full time employees. You’re now Unique Mobility, why the change of company name? With showrooms in Launceston and Plymouth and a unit in Yeovil we now cover all of the Southwest and South Wales, having a geographical name meant some people thought we didn’t travel outside of Launceston and Plymouth, others thought we were 2 separate businesses and competitors. We also have plans for growth with new businesses that will work under the Unique name. Only the name has changed though, It’s still myself and my team.

What next? The plan is for continued growth over the coming years all within the mobility industry with another outlet planned to open in the coming months. We have a number of exclusive contracts which we want to expand on whilst continuing to offer our customers the very best service with market leading products delivered with the care and after sales support where known for.

Americana in Launceston BY THE HAMMOND AGENCY Copywriting, keywords, SEO and a website all come together to present your business. Marketing such as social media, blogging and email helps to build customer relationships. But it works best when businesses think carefully about the words they use.

Joseph Parsons (left) and Sean Taylor (right) will both be appearing at No. 8 in early 2019.

1. GOOGLE LIKES UPDATES

Launceston is full of cultural gems and one of its beauties is ‘Music at No. 8’. Since 2009, the monthly gigs in the cosy upstairs room at No. 8 Cafe have become legendary - an intimate place to settle down with fellow music lovers and listen to some of the best contemporary blues, folk and indie music around.

A regularly updated website appears in more searches for businesses like yours. Blogs and social media will help you achieve this. 2. IMPROVE SEO

The words that are used to search for you may change. If your website matches search words, your business will be trusted more than if it uses unclear words.

Local lad Colin Hill started putting on concerts here in the 1960s when he was still a teenager, and he began booking a steady stream of his musical heroes in the 80s and 90s such as Michael Chapman, David Nelson, Bridget St John and many others. He later teamed up with cafe owner Adi Harvey and sound engineer Graham Sleeman to book singer songwriters, instrumentalists and bands from near and far, creating the monthly events that have become a musical institution. Alison Werren took over from Colin five years ago and has continued and expanded the repertoire of eclectic musical delights from all over the world, booking great artists like Nibs van de Spuy, Rob Lutes, Tyr Na nog, Little Unsaid, Wild Ponies, Canyon Ryde and Hannah Martin.

3. UNDERSTAND CUSTOMER NEEDS

Just as your products/services may change, your customers’ needs may change. It’s important your website reflects this if your business is to grow 4. CONSISTENCY BRINGS

CUSTOMERS BACK

A consistent message - across your website and marketing - builds trust and will set you a step above your competitors. The Hammond Agency is a small communications consultancy working with clients across Cornwall and the UK. With more than 50 years media experience they understand what makes a business attractive to read about - and the way to present marketing so it is read.

There is an exciting programme of French, US, English and Cornish acts in the pipeline for early 2019, with tickets available online from www.wegottickets.com. Launceston is blessed to have such a great music scene and has Colin, Alison, Graham and Adi and their connections, enthusiasm and excellent taste to thank for it!

generations Helping us for

You would be unlikely to find many people in Launceston that didn’t already know our Mayor, Margaret Young, though most in the town will know her as so much more than that. Publisher of Launceston Life Ellie Mason tells us more about this inspirational woman.

W Helping us for generations: Margaret Young

hat some might not know is that Margaret has taught and inspired three generations in Launceston. Starting in 1976 as a part-time home economics teacher at Launceston College, she soon progressed to Head of Department and became a firm favourite amongst all students. When asked what she thought made her a success in teaching, she simply replied “Loving teaching as much as I did meant I always had a good rapport with the students”. “I had wanted to teach since I was 6 years old, and I thank my parents who encouraged me to go on to higher education”. When I think of Margaret, I see not only the person leading the town through many wonderful and current initiatives, but also as the person that inspired my quiet, then shy brother Jamie to become the amazing Head Chef he is today through her teaching. And he

isn’t the only one whose life has been impacted by her. At a recent Launceston College school reunion, she was approached by one of the ‘hard to reach’ students she had taught over the years, now all grown up with a family of his own. He told her “Mrs Young, do you realise you saved me?”. She has also heard recently from a previous student who used the skills and text book from her lessons to cook meals at university, which he then sold to other students to fund his way through his degree. It is clear to see that Margaret touches the hearts of all who come into contact with her. She has the most genuine and open manner, is humble and community minded, and really engages in our community. One of her proudest moments was being asked to be Mayor, though it is no surprise that her ethos even in this official capacity is “local first”.

Mayor Margaret Young and Councillor Val Bugden-Cawsey share a laugh
