THE TOWN HALL

elcome to the spring edition of Launceston Life. With the snowdrops and daffodils blooming, lighter mornings appearing and the snow of last month melted away, we do declare it’s feeling a lot like Spring! With the start of the year not quite so positive as the town would have hoped for, due to closures of some well known and loved shops and of course the sad news of councillor Val Bugden-Cawsey losing her battle with cancer, we are hoping to bring some joy with this edition of Launceston Life as best we can. Packed full of positives, you can read about all the new ventures and shops coming into Launceston to make our town bigger and better than it already is. We also have plenty of information about this years Charles Causley Festival, which is now celebrating its 10th anniversary! Don’t forget to check our Wosson section for all the events taking place and around the town, and why not enter our competition where you can win a £45 voucher from Church View Vintage? We hope you enjoy reading your Spring edition, and let’s look towards a brighter and better year!

From 12-2.30pm bring together friends & family to tuck into the best local produce on one plate.

As soon as you approach the glorious frontage of the Eagle House, a feeling of something exciting in the air is evident.

the London Dry gin tradition with the addition of raspberries, lemongrass and blueberries. The heavy citrus weighting makes this gin a treat for the nose and the lemongrass finish keeps going and going.

They were awarded their licence to make gin on site in September last year, and have also been offered Leader funding to grow this exciting arm of the business. We caught up with the team there to discuss progress and share their fabulous news.

Eagle Two - A gin for winter, more akin to an Old Tom than a London Dry. Eagle Two is a celebration of warming winter spices. Cardamom and orange lead the charge and a subtle hint of sweet spice lingers at the finish. Both are made with 100% British grain, triple distilled to 96.6% ABV and cut back to a smooth 48% with Cornish spring water.

"After a busy few months working with my traditional copper pot stills, and struggling to keep up with orders, I am thrilled that we have been awarded some support from Leader to grow the gin business" says resident distiller Jack. "This will mean the installation of a beautiful new gin still, which will take pride of place in our soon to be refurbished conservatory’".

They also make a very delicious Rhubarb & Ginger Liqueur, which we highly recommend topping up your favourite glass of bubbles with! You can try all these and many more at a gin tasting evening with Jack, bookable almost any evening with enough notice. After a gin tasting experience you won’t forget, why not stay on to experience their fabulous a la carte menu too?

Each gin is unique and bursting with flavour, and Jack talks us through each one below:

by Jade Farrington, Cornwall Councillor for Launceston South 2019 is off to a flying start. By the time you read this, Launceston Florists will have opened a new fruit and veg shop in the White Hart Arcade, and Launceston’s first ever Scrapstore will have opened on Race Hill. The venue takes reusable waste such as fabric and glass, and uses it to make crafts to reduce the amount being thrown away. Members have unlimited use of the store, and they’re running regular workshops where you can learn new skills and make your own products. Launceston Town Hall will host the first Tamar Valley Tourism Conference on March 27th, and Visit Cornwall is working alongside the Tamar Valley Tourism

Association (TAVATA) to help shine the spotlight on tourism in Launceston. We have a beautiful town with some excellent attractions in and around it, so tourism is an area ripe for expansion. Investment continues to come, with the expansion of Launceston Medical Centre; a new primary school at Hay Common; pedestrian bridges at Newport and Ridgegrove; and council-built homes set for the Link Road. There has been sad news too. We’ve lost many well-loved members of our community, including the inspirational Cllr Val Bugden-Cawsey. She refused to be downbeat, and spent her final months raising awareness of malignant melanoma and spearheading

fundraising of research into the disease. You can contribute at www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/val-walks-tall. The proposed closure of Kensey Foods has also sent a shockwave through the town, but it has been reassuring to see the great support being offered. Parent company Samworth Brothers is offering relocation to different factories, and Cornwall Development Company has mobilised Cormac, Corcare, and Jobline to identify job opportunities. Launceston is a great community, and by continuing to support one another we can pull through the difficult times and make the most of the good!

Adventure Walks Luxury Home Boarding

2 hours with very steep ascents and descents, this is a favourite weekend circular walk with two ferry rides crossing the river. Parking is limited in the old part of Fowey, so use the car park at Hanson Drive PL23 1ET, just a 5 minute walk down to town.

With 9 Acre Private Woodland Licensed, Fully Insured, DBS Check, Pet First Aid 5* Reviews and Large Secure Garden

There are lots of dog friendly places to eat and drink at Polruan and Fowey. At this time of year, the lack of leaves on the trees enable spectacular views of Fowey Harbour, and in just a few weeks the walk will be smothered with spring woodland bluebells and primroses.

A decade of creativity

The Charles Causley Festival of Arts & Literature is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and over the weekend of June 7th, 8th and 9th 2019 an all singing all dancing line up of music, theatre, storytelling, arts and literature events will explode across Launceston.

A decade of creativity

Catering for every possible taste – from toddlers to teens, mums and dads to grandmas and grandads – the festival producers want you to come and help them celebrate not just the creative life of Launceston poet Charles Causley, but creativity itself! If you like music then why not get yourself along to see Jim Causley play a festival warm-up candle-lit gig at St Thomas Church on Sunday June 2nd. Jim is a relative of Charles Causley and an award winning folk singer who recently played as part of The Band of Love at Radio 2’s Party in Hyde Park. Expect toe-tapping tunes from the master of the squeeze box. If art is your thing, there will be a variety of art related activities running during the festival. Swanskin Printmakers will be exhibiting at Southgate Arch, the old debtor’s prison, and they will also be running drop-in workshops on the Saturday and Sunday where you can have a go at creating your own mini-artwork to take home with you and hang on your wall. Kurt Jackson will also be giving a talk about his recent stay as Artist-in-Residence at Cyprus Well and the impact it had on his creative output.

16

Tickets for all of the festival events can be bought online at the Cornish Riviera Box Office - or in person at Launceston Tourist Information Centre (01566 772321). For more information, pick up a brochure around town or visit www.charlescausleyfestival.co.uk.

A decade of creativity

For lovers of storytelling, Jane Nancarrow will be leading a trip up to Bodmin Moor to tell the murderous tale of Charlotte Dymond and how she came to a sticky end at the hands of her lover one bleak Sunday in 1844, and Rob Tremain will give a guided tour of Causley around the town. Sunday is the Festival’s Day of Writing for those of you who have ever fancied putting pen to paper. Professional writers Jenny Alexander and Cathy Galvin will guide you expertly through the writing process, from imaginings in your mind to getting the words down on the page. Patrick Gale will be heading to the festival on Saturday 8th to talk about his latest novel, Take Nothing With You. Patrick’s previous novel, Man In An Orange Shirt, was made into a BBC two part film and won an International Emmy Award in 2018 for Best TV Movie. There will be so much more happening too, so be sure to come along and let your creativity shine bright over the weekend!

Caring vets, happy pets The last few weeks have been a busy time for the team at Castle Vets. We have been dealing with a variety of challenging yet rewarding medical cases; amongst them a young Kelpie with meningitis, an elderly Shihtzu with acute pancreatitis resulting in diabetes, and three dogs with severe anaemia - each requiring a blood transfusion! There are many causes of severe, sudden onset anaemia in dogs. One of the most common is due to bleeding as a result of rodenticide (rat bait) poisoning. Rodenticide use has been common place for many years, but the compounds used are increasing in strength and duration of action leading to more serious repercussions for the dogs that inadvertently ingest them. Most rodenticides reduce the ability of the blood to clot and therefore serious bleeding can occur - even from a small wound. Thankfully, after intensive nursing care at the practice on Pennygillam, vitamin K therapy and a blood transfusion to replace the blood lost, our most recent case of rodenticide poisoning has returned home happy and well. Without the transfusion of blood kindly donated by a lovely Labrador owned by a local breeder, the story would have had a different ending. Our emergency care and out of hours care is provided by our own vets and is based at our practice on the Pennygillam Estate and can be contact on 01566 772211.

Caring vets, happy pets

Having looked after the animals of Launceston and the surrounding area for over 130 years, we have a few stories to share. As the only independent vet in the town and the only one accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, we hope our regular columns in Launceston Life will give you a small insight into the work of a busy veterinary practice.

News from LAUNCESTON TOWN COUNCIL

Hopefully as you read this update, Spring has come to Launceston and the town is enjoying all that springtime has to offer.

Circuit. Our Councillors hold surgeries at at every Market, so if you would like to ask any questions or have any comments or feedback please do take the time to approach them.

The latest from Launceston Town Council

For some people St Piran’s Day is the marker of the changing seasons, and I am really looking forward to Launceston’s St Piran’s Day celebrations. For the first time, Launceston Tourist Information Centre has been arranging celebrations for local children in the form of a parade and performances. The event is in planning stages as I write, but I hope that a large number of you were able to witness the delightful sight of 100 children from local primary schools parading through town, stopping at the Town Square and Parade Ground for performances of Cornish dances and songs before a final series of recitals and lunch in the Town Hall. This event should be seen as an inaugural occasion and it is hoped that it becomes a regular date in the Launceston calendar. It is so important to provide our local children with an annual community celebration to embrace their Cornish roots and heritage, and to make Launceston the hub for North Cornwall’s St Piran’s events.

There have been some changes to the membership of Launceston Town Council since the last update. We welcomed new Councillor Ian Nolan who was co-opted at the December meeting. Councillor Nolan, originally from the Midlands, is eager to work to serve this community. He is a keen golfer and a retired Finance and Information Technology Manager who has had a varied career in a variety of businesses, both within the UK and abroad. Sadly, Cllr Val Bugden-Cawsey passed away in January. Following her diagnosis with Advanced Malignant Melanoma in 2018, Val put her energies into fundraising for research into this rare form of cancer and raised a staggering £25,000 by the end of the year. She was an inspirational and charismatic woman who will be greatly missed by many. At the January Full Council meeting, the Council resolved to adopt the budget for 2019/20 with the precept for 2019/2020 set at £657,121. This is an increase of £90,059 on 2018/2019, a percentage increase of 16%. The total Band D payment will be £219.99 or 60p per day.

Our monthly Market in the Square will be back on the second Saturday of each month, so make sure you venture into town on 9th March, 13th April and 11th May to browse the eclectic range of stalls from local traders and businesses and take some time to visit the wonderful independent shops we are so lucky to have in Launceston. If you are a trader and would like to find out more about joining the Market, just contact the Tourist Information Centre on 01566 772321 or info@launcestontic.co.uk. We are very proud that a number of successful businesses in Launceston started out by taking a table at the Market, including Little Bakehouse, Church View Vintage and Short

In 2018 the Council resolved to take on the library service to ensure that the service was maintained for the town. This means that the current library staff will be joining the Town Council once the legal details have been completed. The increase in the precept (which for a Band D property represents £24.86 per year) reflects the additional costs to the Council associated with taking on this additional service.

We have continued to build the earmarked reserve for our new cemetery, which will allow for the necessary costs involved with the new development, on land that has already been secured opposite the existing cemetery site. The Town Council has a clear 20 year plan for building maintenance and a proportion of the budget is allocated towards works identified on that plan.

The range of assets and services which Launceston Town Council is responsible for is considerable. As well as the Town Hall and Guildhall, we also own the Ambulance Hall, and operate the cemetery at Upper Chapel, the closed cemetery at Dockacre, Westgate Street Multi-Storey Car Park, four sets of public toilets, Southgate Arch, Lawrence House Museum, Newport Roundhouse, the Priory Ruins and the Rest Garden at Newport, the Tourist Information Centre, Windmill Wood, Priory Park, Grammers Park and Lanstephen play areas, allotment sites at Grammers Park, Kensey and Dutson, the coach park in Westgate Street, the Band Room and the Green Room, the Town Square and Parade Ground.

Thank you for taking the time to read about what the Council has been doing, and please remember that you can call, email or visit us in person if there is any information or updates you would like. You can also contact your local councillor directly. Your councillors are: Margaret Young (Town Mayor), Dave Gordon (Deputy Mayor), Sam Allen, Helen Bailey, Paula Bullen, John Conway , John Harris, Brian Hogan, Brian Keighley, Jane Nancarrow, Ian Nolan, Paul O’Brien, Leighton Penhale, Rob Tremain and Jessica Williams. Tel: 01566 773693 Email: admin@launceston-tc.gov.uk Web: www.launceston-tc.gov.uk Social: Facebook & Twitter @lansontownclerk The Town Council offices are open between 9am-5pm Monday to Friday

The Council actively supports many of the events and festivals which take place in the town, provides the Christmas Lights for the town and gives grants to local organisations. The Town Council is responsible for public seats, some public lights and bus shelters, extensive grass cutting and horticultural work across the

town, footpath maintenance and weed killing, and from January of this year have undertaken the grounds maintenance contract for a large part of Coronation Park.

In 2019/2020 the Town Council will raise 31% of its income from sources other than the precept (Council Tax), mainly from grants, service level agreements for providing services, car park income and income from Town Hall and Council venue lettings. The Council continually looks at ways of increasing income sources, and reviews expenditure to ensure best value, while continuing to protect and enhance services and facilities.

Some of you will know about the internationally acclaimed poet Charles Causley whose beloved home was our beautiful town of Launceston, and some of you will know a little more after reading through this edition of Launceston Life. What many of you won't know was just how special Launceston and its community was to him. Born in 1917, Causley was a shy and modest man who came from humble beginnings. He lived his whole life in Launceston, only leaving to serve in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. Home was so important to him, immortalising our town with poems such as Tom Bone, Eagle One Eagle Two and Mary Mary Magdalen. He had such a vivid way of painting a landscape through a simple, light and lyrical use of words, never forgetting his roots. After returning from the wa,r he took up a teaching post at his old school St. Catherine’s CofE Primary. He was a huge champion of the child, famously quoted to have said “Never mind what they learn from me. The truth is I learn a great deal from them”. After retiring from teaching to focus on his poetry, he sat on a great many community and local organisations, and in a sense gave something back to the town that was his inspiration for so much of his work. History has a way of turning full circle, and just as he immortalised our town by wrapping it up in such beautiful words of poetry, the town now immortalises him through the Causley Trust and the vibrant Charles Causley Festival of Literature and Arts held in June.

This Sacred Land is the newly published first book in The Chronicle of the Dewnan series, by local author Tim Bagshaw. Set in the Tamar Valley, along the North and South Cornwall and Devon coasts and in Brittany, it tells the story of the first of the great Arthurs (or ‘Artur’ in This Sacred Land), the son of the Bear King, and his struggle against treachery, invasion and the might of Julius Caesar in the middle of the first century BCE. Passionate about the place he lives in, and through a combination of walking, observing and living in the landscape, and a keen interest in lost and forgotten histories; Tim has created a new take on the story of Arthur, where the legend begins far earlier, with a valiant stand against the inevitable advance of the Roman legions. Victory is never certain, but however it ends, this is a story of intrigue, passion and friendships formed for all time. This Sacred Land is available on Amazon, Apple Books and in book shops. If you would like to know more, you can follow Tim on Twitter @bagshaw_tim or Facebook @dewnanchronicle. You can also meet Tim at book signings in March: March 15 - 11.30am: Launceston Tourism Information Centre March 22 - 11.00am: T re, Pol and Pen, the new farm food shop, café and restaurant on the A388 in Lezant parish.

Cornwall & Devon Insurance Services is a trading style of Riviera Insurance Services Limited who is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA FRN 786116)

Big news for small broker Cornwall & Devon Insurance Services first opened their doors in 1992, with local businessman Kevan Sellers and his wife Rosemary at the helm. Since starting the business all those years ago, there have been many changes in both regulation and technology that have, by Kevan’s own admission, been difficult for the business to keep up with. The decision was then made to join forces with Rivera Insurance.

Sellars had deep seeded roots in the towns of both Launceston and Bude, so partnering with the right person was essential. When Kevan met Kevin Davies of the growing Devon based brokerage Riviera Insurance, he knew it was a good fit. "Seeing Kevin’s passion and commitment to staying in the town was a fundamental element in making my decision. Furthermore, Riviera has the capacity to make the additional investment required in both technology and regulation". Kevin added "We saw the acquisition of Kevan and Rosemary’s business as the start of investment in the town and surrounding areas of Launceston. We have already started to build on the offices existing success with the implementation of technology, the building

Rexel know how to treat its customers

Offering wholesale electrical items for both trade and residential use, Rexel are just as invested into the community as they are running a successful and helpful business. Understanding the importance of trust between customer, branch, and supplier at a local level, they have certainly invested in and encouraged these relationships.

of experience from different sectors of the business. Some come with a solid understanding of electrical wholesale, whilst others have come from construction, traffic management, signage, ppe, lighting & control and HVAC. This broad spectrum of knowledge across multi disciplines coupled with their digital offering, bespoke pricing, local stock holding and next day logistics services put them on the road to success.

Business Manager of the Exeter branch Craig Spokes says that this operation is one of the most satisfying parts of the job. “We can resolve a customer enquiry through the network of customers we have. Recently one of our customers secured a maintenance contract with a large recycling provider but required support with electrical works. As a team we were able to offer the services of another one of our customers and this has shown growth for all parties involved which is brilliant. These are the sort of scenarios we want to be known for.

Rexel actively work on building and securing relationships with their customers, and many have grown into friendships over the years. “As a team we regularly look to thank our customer for the business be this at the Rugby, or the curry house says Craig. “Last year we hosted a Paintball day for customers, and their children (pictured) and the event went down a storm with everybody having a great day. We look forward to the 2019 calendar which is already starting to fill up".

Rexel are not just any old wholesaler, and their team is made up of a broad spectrum

Jim Edwards Our towns historical guru by Ellie Mason

Jim Edwards - Our towns historical guru

I met Jim last Autumn when he politely knocked on my office door and handed me a piece of paper with a long list of my ancestry - a very touching gesture. Since then, we have met quite a few times to talk about Launceston History, which has been fascinating and perhaps one of the best things to come out of taking on Launceston Life. Jim is a quiet and unassuming gentleman that many of you won’t know, though it’s likely that he will know something about you! Whether it’s your family history, the house you live in, the land your home has been built on, the building

you work in or anything to do with the history of our town Jim is your man. Extremely passionate about a sense of place, he moved to Launceston in the early 60s and worked in construction. When asked what prompted him to start researching the area, he said “I kept seeing so many unusual place names which got me thinking, and I wanted to really know my way around. Not being from CornwalI meant I was forever being sent in the wrong direction by mischievous locals”. I asked him what kept him here, and he said it was Launceston’s great central location and good access to

Devon, Cornwall and beyond. I couldn’t agree more; being 45 minutes away from Exeter, Plymouth, Newquay, St Austell, two airports and a speedy rail link from Exeter to London, we are truly spoiled! All Jim wants to do is inspire others to know and find out a little more about their own history, which is something that I have thoroughly enjoyed doing over the past few months. If this has inspired you to do some searching of your own, pop along to the Library on a Tuesday and you’ll usually find Jim upstairs pouring through the archives!
