Welcome! E
very year the summer agricultural showing season seems to creep up and before you know it, they are here. This year, in particular, after the prolonged winter, they have seem to have crept up even faster than usual. The south west is particularly well served by events large and small and reflects the strength, depth and importance of the agriculture in the region. In this special issue we focus on one of the oldest events of this type in the UK, the Royal Cornwall Show. Farming is the beating heart of the Royal Cornwall, one of the best traditional agricultural shows in the land. Nothing has changed in that respect since it was formed 225 years ago. Some of the finest livestock around will fill the cattle, sheep, pig and goat sections. It’s a genuine opportunity for the industry in the West Country to show off what it can do. When it comes to doing business, the agricultural trade area is vast, with everything – from the latest machinery through to a wide range of related service providers – you could wish to find. There’s also plenty of fun and entertainment to be had, plus, possibly a visit from an interested member of the Royal family – which is often the case. Serious farmers will not be disappointed if they take the time to visit the Royal Cornwall Show. Steve Michell Editor www.royalcornwall.co.uk

Visiting the Royal Cornwall Show?
There’s so much to do! ABOVE The Cavalry of Heroes will perform a poignant WW1 tribute BELOW The Kangaroo Kid will jump anything
Y
ou’ll find 1000 trade stands to browse, thousands of animals to meet, fun at the vintage fun fair, a spectacular flower show plus sumptuous Cornish food and drink to sample along with so much more. It’s lucky the show runs over three days to enable you to fit as much as possible in. A real must, however, is making some time to enjoy the event’s entertainment offering. We take a look at what’s in store in the main ring where headline acts ranging from the fast and furious to the majestic and skilful will take centre stage. THE KANGAROO KID | Direct from Australia’s Gold Coast fearless Matt Coulter makes a welcome return to the show’s
main ring. His fast-paced quad bike act is packed with tricks and stunts. If you put it in his way, whether it’s a car, tractor or truck, daredevil Matt will jump it. There might be a chance for some lucky, or unlucky as the case might be, members of the crowd to take part in the action. You’ve been warned! A typically dry Australian sense of humour ensures Matt’s commentary, provided from his helmet during the event, makes the whole thing twice as entertaining. CAVALRY OF HEROES – WORLD WAR 1 HORSES AND HEROES | To mark the 100year anniversary of World War One, Cavalry of Heroes will make their debut at the Royal Cornwall with a special show remembering the role that the valiant horses and soldiers played in The Great War. Poignant and dignified, the professional riders will combine tricks and stunts on horseback with a great music score, a rousing sing-a-long and a final cavalry charge. Described as “a magical blend of horsemanship and theatre” this will be the only opportunity to see this limited-edition act, that will only be performed during 2018, in the region.
The RAF Falcons will be dropping in on the show
THE RAF FALCONS | Regular visitors to the show will probably have seen the colourful aerial display performed by the UK’s premier parachute display team. Visible from across the showground as they descend from the Cornish skies, the team create a breath-taking spectacle which culminates in a landing, with pinpoint accuracy, in the main ring. DEVON & CORNWALL POLICE DOGS DISPLAY TEAM | The police dog section from our local constabulary will show off their skills. During their display you’ll see how the canine and human policing partnerships protect the public whilst on duty. BAND OF HER MAJESTY’S ROYAL MARINES (PLYMOUTH) | Pomp and ceremony will be provided in military fashion this year by the Band of HM Royal Marines, Plymouth. Based in Cornwall, at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint, expect rousing tunes and synchronised marching when the band perform on the Thursday and Saturday of the show. The parades of prize winning horses, cattle, sheep and goats, edge-of-the-seat show jumping classes, hound parades and the thrilling inter-hunt relay, a horseback team race that never fails to excite, are all part of another jam-packed main ring programme. Farming comes first at the Royal Cornwall Show
W
ith a national reputation in farming circles, agriculture has always been firmly at the very heart of the Royal Cornwall Show. Promoting the industry and driving improvement in techniques and knowledge within it remain the core aims of the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association. This year the agricultural machinery section will be bursting at the seams once again. You’ll find the very latest innovations and essential, tried and tested kit for the farmers – large and smaller scale – to discover. The choice is vast and you can be assured that all the industry’s major manufacturers will be represented with dealerships from across the region taking up residence during the three-day show. Every sector that supports agriculture will be represented as well, from specialist
insurers and quality assurance providers to animal feed and seed merchants, you’ll find them all here. Stuart Coombe, a Chartered Financial Planner from Old Mill said: "We are delighted to be attending the Royal Cornwall Show again this year with our hospitality stand situated close to the members pavilion in the heart of the showground. "A Cornish community rich in agriculture and award winning food and drink, we are excited to explore the fantastic stands around the show and meet acquaintances old and new". David Price, Sales & Operations Leader at Cornish Mutual said: “The Royal Cornwall Show is always a fantastic opportunity to celebrate everything that is great about the agricultural community in Cornwall.
6 ≈ Modern Farming: Royal Cornwall Show Special Editon
"It gives us the opportunity to meet our Members in a relaxed environment, away from the daily pressures of their businesses. “The hospitality in the Cornish Mutual marquee is legendary – it’s our way of thanking our members for their continued support. “We are passionate about using the show to give back to the local communities and routinely raise thousands for local good causes.” Andrew Power, director at Crediton Milling Company said: “The Royal Cornwall Show represents a great opportunity to meet farmers in a more social environment.
“Our marquee turns into a farming forum in which customers, friends and families all come and enjoy an array of food, drink and chat with each other and our team. We don’t push sales because we have the rest of the year for that. The show is a celebration of farming and for three days that’s what we do.” This really is a serious agricultural event, it’s the place for the industry to meet, talk, learn and do business and millions of pounds worth of deals will be done. You can find out which trade stands will feature at this year’s show, which takes place on the 7th, 8th & 9th June, by visiting www.royalcornwall.co.uk.

Special celebration of the countryside to take place at the Royal Cornwall Show
T
his summer the Royal Cornwall Show will play host to a special celebration of HRH The Prince of Wales’s contribution to the countryside, environment and rural communities in the UK. In total, 80 of His Royal Highness’ patronages will come together in a unique and colourful parade highlighting their work and achievements to date. The event will promote their collective understanding of the scope of countryside, environment and rural activity and provide a legacy to share best practice in the future. Chris Riddle, Secretary at the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association said: “It is an immense honour and privilege to host such a
significant national celebration of the countryside. I have been overwhelmed by the creativity of the patronages taking part and the distances many will travel to take part in the parade. “The Royal Cornwall Show is at the heart of the rural community in Cornwall and it is a great pleasure to recognise the valuable work achieved by these charities here in the county and throughout the UK.” Claire Saunders, Director, The Prince’s Countryside Fund said: “I am thrilled to be involved in organising this extraordinary event. It is the first time that so many of HRH The Prince of Wales’s rural charities have been brought together and will be a marvellous demonstration of countryside resilience and the collective impact of what can be achieved for future

generations with a collaborative and united approach.” Over 80 charities are planning to be involved and have a role in the parade. The event will showcase broad themes including wildlife and conservation, native breeds, food and farming, and heritage and skills. The breadth and diverse range of charities taking part in the parade provide an ideal opportunity to draw together and catalogue their collective achievements to date. HRH The Prince of Wales’s charities illustrate the complex and interconnected nature of the countryside and the features which make it unique, and to be cherished for future generations. The Prince’s Countryside Parade will take place in the main arena on Thursday 7th June 2018 at the Royal Cornwall Show.

ur holistic approach delivers inspiring, ambitious and achievable designs, maximising development potential whilst adhering to clients’ briefs and budgets. We have considerable experience of working with farmers who recognise that diversification is vital to their livelihoods as they adapt to new and dynamic markets. Redeveloping redundant farm buildings creates potentially lucrative new revenue streams, as well as enhancing employment opportunities for the next generation. Falling profitability within agriculture, coupled with uncertainty over Brexit, prompted our clients at this farm in Cornwall to consider alternative uses for their land to generate additional income. We worked with them to design a scheme to convert a dilapidated barn complex on the farm to create interconnecting buildings, flexible enough to use as four separate homes or one large holiday unit. The large stone barns had fallen into disrepair and were unsuitable for accommodating livestock or machinery.
Our proposal involved demolishing and replacing the non-original metal buildings, and converting and extending the stone barns to create an attractive and charming property cluster, retaining as many original features as possible. The buildings have been designed and upgraded to a high quality specification, using only locally-sourced materials sympathetic to the site and reflecting its history and rural surroundings, intrinsic to the scheme from conception. We secured planning permission in 2017 and are excited to be involved with managing the construction phase later this year. Strong livestock entries for the Royal Cornwall
C
ompetition will be as stiff as ever at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show (7-9 June) as organisers reveal entries remain high within the livestock and equine sections. The pig section has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years with the highest number of entries on record set at last year’s show. It has once again enjoyed significant support and has seen its second highest numbers in its history with 237 entries received. The Middle White, Gloucester Old Spot and Welsh pig breeds have all registered an uplift in numbers for 2018.
The sheep section, sponsored by Mole Valley Farmers, continues to enjoy strong support. This year’s show will boast the third highest entry of sheep at 1288. The 2017 event saw a new high surpassing 2016’s second highest turnout on record. With 31 entries the Coloured Ryland sheep breed will, for the first time, have its own classes due to securing enough support. British Charollais, Hampshire Down, North Country Cheviot, Roussin, Zwartbles, Whiteface Dartmoor, Beltex and Border Leicester sheep breeds also secured an uplift in numbers this time out. The fleece section has received 54 entries. Dairy leads the way in the show’s cattle section with an increase in Jersey, Holstein and Ayrshire numbers this year. The number of Aberdeen Angus, Hereford, British Charolais and British Simmental cattle within the beef section are also up.
A total of 548 stalls have been booked within the cattle section, which almost matches the 2017 total. Christopher Riddle, secretary of the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association said: “We had a particularly strong year in 2017, with record numbers in the sheep and pig entries so it is pleasing that entries this year are at levels close to previous highs. “The Royal Cornwall Show is an opportunity for the industry, which is in times of continued uncertainty, to showcase what it can do and it is reassuring to see it being grasped firmly with both hands. “We look forward to welcoming exhibitors from across the country complete with the highest quality livestock when the show opens on Thursday 7th June.” Find out more by visiting: www.royalcornwall.co.uk Modern Farming: Royal Cornwall Show Special Editon ≈ 17

Whatever your budget, there should be something here for you and you’ll have the opportunity of seeing so many options all within one easily navigated area. Land Rover, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Nissan, VW, Toyota and Ford will be among marques offering 4x4s that will be found at this year’s show. Nick Jones, Dealer Principal at Truro Motor Company said: “The multi-award winning New Volvo XC40 has arrived in Cornwall and will be making its debut at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show. A celebration of Cornish food and drink
F
ood and drink produced in Cornwall has built up quite a reputation and it’s only natural that a spotlight is shone on the huge array of producers based in the Duchy at the Royal Cornwall Show. In 1990 an idea was hatched to celebrate local produce and the Cornwall Food & Farming Pavilion at the Royal Cornwall Show was born. Only two of the original eight exhibitors were food producers. Hilary Wood from the Cornwall Food & Farming Group, who has organised the feature since 2001, said: “There just weren’t the food producers around.” It is very much a different story now. One of the first exhibitors, renowned Cornish clotted cream producers Rodda’s, have been ever present. Nicholas Rodda, managing director of the company, said: “We are proud that we were one of the first Cornish businesses to be involved with the Cornwall Food & Farming Pavilion at the Royal Cornwall Show when it launched. “The show provides a great opportunity for us to talk to our farmers and customers as well as like-minded food companies, whilst also showcasing our produce.” With more and more local producers emerging over the years, the Cornwall Food & Farming Pavilion has grown considerably.
This year it will house nearly 60 Cornish food and drink producers. The owners of Deli Farm Charcuterie were won over well before creating their own Cornish food enterprise, as Jean Edwards explains. ”Before we started the business we always visited the Pavilion and would purchase lots of wonderful foods that were difficult to find anywhere else. “Becoming part of this event was one of our ambitions when we started. It has a brilliant atmosphere and buzzes from first thing in the morning until it closes.” Angela Parker from Callestick Farm, makers of Cornish ice cream using milk from their own dairy herd, shares Jean’s enthusiasm. “We love being involved as we consider it the best county show there is and very ably demonstrates Cornwall and what she has to offer. The Cornwall Food & Farming Pavilion has a fantastic reputation around the country. “So many Cornish people attend the show and have a good time. Part of the experience for them is sampling great local food and drink. Of course an essential part of a good day out is having an ice cream!”

Debut for Cornwall Cider Championships A new competitive section is being introduced at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show to celebrate cider making. The resurgence in popularity of cider has led the organiser of the show, the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association, to include cider classes among the numerous competitive elements of Cornwall’s largest annual event. The Cornwall Cider Championships are open to amateur and professional cider makers from in and out of the county. David Berwick from St Ives Cider, Chairman of the newly formed cider section committee organising the championships, is looking forward to the inaugural event. “Cornwall has often been seen as the little brother when it comes to cider and I feel this competition is essential to promote the industry as a serious contender on a national, as well as an international stage. “Cornwall’s rich heritage in the cider business needs to come to the fore once again to show
Cornish Cider Bar
the industry what we can do. Our commercial makers produce some of the best cider in the country, winning awards regionally, nationally and globally. “There is a wealth of amateur makers quietly going about their business making really good cider on a small scale. It is time we all had the chance to get recognition for what we are able to do.” The Dreckly Inn, a special Cornish Cider bar, will form part of the new addition. Show-goers will be able to sample the largest array of Cornish ciders in one place. Tipples from more than 20 commercial cider makers based in Cornwall will be represented with
the bar manned by experienced, knowledgeable staff drawn from their number happy to discuss the products with interested visitors. It looks set to be a very popular new addition to the Royal Cornwall and joint cider competition organiser, Tom Bray of St Mabynbased Haywood Cider, feels it’ll be the “icing on the cake for this year’s show.” He said: “It will be the perfect opportunity to indulge in some of Cornwall’s famous ciders as well as discovering ciders from the smaller and newer producers. Nowhere else will you be able to try such a wide range of Cornish ciders under one canvas. “Local cider makers will be delighted with this new platform to showcase their craft to such a large audience, but I think it'll be the smaller cider makers that will benefit the most from the exposure the new cider tent will bring." Tickets are on sale online for this year’s Royal Cornwall Show by visiting www.royalcornwall.co.uk.

The Royal Cornwall Show welcomes new president
S
ir Nicholas Bacon OBE has been elected as Royal Cornwall Show president. Despite not being a Cornish native he is intrinsically linked to the county through the Duchy of Cornwall and his role as Lord Warden of the Stannaries. Despite being a “Norfolk Boy” he said that he was “deeply delighted” at his appointment which was announced at the recent AGM of the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association. Agriculture plays a large part in Sir Nicholas’ life. The main activity at the 5,000 acre Raveningham Estate in Norfolk, the
family seat since the 1750’s, is farming. When it comes to events like the Royal Cornwall, Sir Nicholas is very experienced. “Agricultural Shows have run through my family’s veins for many years. My father was chairman of the Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association back in the 1970’s and I have been chairman since 2008.” The cattle, bees and honey, forestry and local produce are sections this year’s President will be keen to visit. “The weather is of great importance for agricultural shows and I shall have to bring dry weather from Norfolk,” he concluded.
