Performance Notes This work is very free. The solo violist should begin the piece with the ensemble entering later upon cue from the violist. (Preferably after about 15-20 seconds, but that is open to interpretation.) The violist should progress through each line at his/her own pace. The order in which each line is played is left up to the soloist. A line may be played twice, but please vary it from the first performance with the use of timbre, dynamics or tempo. The ensemble tutti is a series of chords. Every member of the ensemble should begin with the first chord and progress at their own pace. Try to connect the notes. Take breaths as needed. Please take as much time as you feel necessary on each pitch. Make sure there are enough players to cover all of the pitches. During a performance each player may choose to perform one or both soli. Soli are not mandatory. Please do not decide prior to a performance if people are going to play a solo. It should happen organically if a performer feels it necessary. Soli can be repeated and performers should make every effort to vary the solo with each playing. When performer finishes a solo they should please return to where they left off in the tutti . The tutti can be performed more than once. If the ensemble chooses to perform the tutti multiple times then prior to performance a decision should me made as to how many repeats will occur and it will be performed in regards to dynamics, timbre and tempo each time. Duration: 33-10 minutes (even longer if the performers feel it necessary)
