SEP 2021 - MAY 2022

Welcome Back We are very pleased to be launching the new season at the Everyman and hope the shows in this new brochure will inspire you to come back to the theatre. We have had some spectacular productions recently which have shown us that people are excited to experience great live entertainment once again. Both The Play That Goes Wrong and Priscilla Queen of the Desert had audiences, laughing, clapping and cheering with standing ovations, which warmed the hearts of the performers, crew and staff that worked so hard to bring these shows to life. The work that we have done over the past months has shown that we can welcome audiences in a safe, enjoyable environment and we are grateful for the feedback and compliments we have received about our efforts. In the coming months we will continue to make sure your visit is as safe and comfortable as possible. We have also returned to offering expanded food and beverage service and will once again feature pre-show dining in our on-site restaurant as well as light meals, teas, coffees and full beverage service in our café throughout the week. In putting together our latest programme of events we had to place particular emphasis on balancing the theatre’s need to recover from the financial difficulty the past 18 months has placed us in, along with the highest quality productions on the national touring circuit. We are very pleased to have hosted the world premiere of Matthew Bourne’s The Midnight Bell, along with upcoming productions of The Good Life (starring Rufus Hound and Preeya Kalidas) prior to the West End, the international smash-hit Chicago and brand new musicals based on the music and

stunning careers of The Osmonds and Cher, as well as the return of Hairspray! Christmas will feature the return of our Pantomime, bigger and better than ever. Jack and the Beanstalk will feature a team of Everyman Theatre favourites including writers and co-directors Samuel Holmes and Nick Winston as well as Kevin Brewis and Kane Verrell who starred in Cinderella and last season’s Reduced Pantomime and Gloucestershire’s favourite clown Tweedy!. More than just Gloucestershire’s favourite holiday entertainment, our pantomime is quickly becoming a national event and a winner of multiple awards so don’t delay – book now! We recognise that the past year and a half have been difficult for everyone and we hope you have all stayed safe and are doing well. The performing arts sector has also suffered during our closures and we now have a lot of ground to make up. We are working hard to rebuild our finances and our capacity to deliver world-class productions to the people of Gloucestershire. To do this we need your help. Book now, bring your friends and family and enjoy yourselves. We are ready to welcome you for a great night out and will do everything we can to make your visit a memorable one.

PRESENTED BY THE EVERYMAN THEATRE AND THEATRE ROYAL BATH PRODUCTIONS

The Dresser WRITTEN BY RONALD HARWOOD

DIRECTED BY TERRY JOHNSON

STARRING JULIAN CLARY AND MATTHEW KELLY

Inspired by memories of working as Donald Wolfit’s dresser as a young man, Ronald Harwood’s evocative, affectionate and hilarious portrait of backstage life is one of the most acclaimed dramas of modern theatre. It is 1942 and in a war-torn provincial theatre an ageing actor manager, known to his loyal acting company as ‘Sir’, is struggling to cling on to his sanity and complete his two hundred and twenty seventh performance of King Lear. It is down to Norman, Sir’s devoted dresser, to ensure that in spite of everything, the show goes on. For sixteen years Norman has been there to fix Sir’s wig, massage his ego, remind him of his opening lines and provide the sound effects in the storm scene.

Maria’s story sent shock waves throughout the country. The Red Barn Murder (as it became known) was national news, inspiring writers and filmmakers down the ages. The sort of gruesome tale that had all the hallmarks of a classic crime drama – a missing body, a country location, a disreputable squire and a village stuck in its age-old traditions. But in all this hysteria Maria’s own story gets lost. Until now. Hal Chambers and Beth Flintoff’s spine-tingling retelling rediscovers her story, bringing it back to vivid, urgent life. Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers

WRITTEN BY WILLY RUSSELL

STARRING LYN PAUL

Willy Russell’s legendary BLOOD BROTHERS tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences.

Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning BLOOD BROTHERS. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail).

Lyn Paul returns for her farewell tour in the iconic role of Mrs Johnstone, which she first made her own in London’s West End. She first rose to fame in the early 1970s as a member of the New Seekers, whose hit I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing sold over 20 million copies and remains one of the 100 best-selling UK singles of all time. Lyn also featured as the lead vocalist on the 1974 number-one hit You Won’t Find Another Fool Like Me.

The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

Hansel & Gretel are so excited, it’s their favourite time of year – Christmas!

But when they get lost deep in the woods, it seems Hansel & Gretel will never make it back in time for Christmas dinner… until they discover a whole host of new friends willing to help them out! And perhaps the Witch living in that delicious gingerbread house isn’t quite what she seems…

A brand new festive take on this classic fairy tale adventure, featuring beautiful puppets, innovative theatre and magical original music.

Featuring remarkable puppetry and all original music, Dickens’ classic is lovingly brought to life in the Everyman’s Irving Studio Theatre.

Reginald D Hunter: Bomb Shuffleur

Paul Merton’s Impro Chums

Climate change. Mass unemployment. Economic pandemics. The rise of global fascism. So what the f*** could this man POSSIBLY say to upset you? Welcome to the world of the Bombe Shuffleur.

The Russian State Opera returns to the Everyman Theatre to present three classic operas featuring an impressive cast of over 30 musicians. Madama Butterfly

Aida

Carmen

Carmen tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a naïve soldier who falls head over heels in love with Carmen, a seductive, free-spirited femme fatale.

No opera can match the tragedy and sorrow of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.

A gripping love story that will keep you on the edge of your seats until the very end.

Set in Japan at the turn of the last century, it is the story of a doomed love affair between an American naval officer and his young Japanese bride whose self-sacrifice and defiance of her family leads to tragedy. This touching tale of innocent love crushed between two utterly different culutures resonates as strongly as ever in today’s world.

A deeply moving opera overflowing with emotion and containing moments of despair and uncertainty. Aida is an unforgettable, inspiring experience.

Mrs Lowry and Son

Performed by the Everyman Theatre’s professional company, Mrs Lowry and Son tells the story of one of the 20th century’s most popular artists.

In October 2010 cartoonist Gabby Shulz posted a comic strip on his website. It was about sexism online. What could possibly go wrong?

L.S. Lowry lived for many years in Salford with his bedridden mother, working as a rent collector by day and painting in his attic by night.

Over the next three days the comic went viral and the comments went bananas.

Martyn Hesford’s play - which was also made into a film starring Timothy Spall and Vanessa Redgrave - tells the story of the moving, humorous and absorbing relationship between Lowry and his beloved mother.

Some of them were witty, some of them were outrageous, some of them were just plain bizarre. 666 Comments is an attempt to stage that comment thread. Two performers, 57 characters, 666 comments.

Night Terrors: The Ghost Stories of E. F. Benson

Howerd’s End

A spine-tingling evening of three tales of the supernatural from E.F. Benson’s brilliant collection of ghost stories Night Terrors.

Frankie Howerd was one of Britain’s most loved comedians for half a century. But he had a secret. And the secret’s name was Dennis.

With masterful storytelling the award-winning actor Gerard Logan will transport you to a darker, more sinister world of the unexpected and the unexplainable.

This brand new play by Mark Farrelly (Quentin Crisp: Naked Hope and The Silence of Snow: The Life of Patrick Hamilton) takes you to the heart of Frankie and Dennis’ clandestine relationship, which lasted from the 1950s until Frankie’s death in 1992. It also affords a glorious opportunity to encounter Frankie in full-flight stand up mode.

The three stories (The Dance, In The Tube and The Confession of Charles Linkworth), are dramatic, haunting and hugely memorable.

Packed with laughter, but unafraid of truth, Howerd’s End portrays two humans’ journey through closeness, love, grief, and all the other things that make life worth living. Come and say farewell to a legend...and learn the art of letting go.

Mark Harrison Band There is no one in music quite like Mark Harrison. He is widely considered one of the most original and interesting artists around. His highly individual, all-original music has taken him and his band to some of the top venues and festivals in the UK, attracting acclaim wherever they go. Recent appearances on BBC Radio 2, as a guest on Cerys Matthews’s show and Pick Of The Week, have further added to his growing reputation. Mark’s songs cover all manner of non-standard subjects. With catchy tunes, lyrics that intrigue, and striking rhythms to make you smile, think and move. His band features Charles Benfield on double bass and Ben Welburn on drums/percussion.

An Evening of Deception

The White Heart Inn

Gloucestershire’s longest running, sell-out magic show is proud to return to the Irving Studio Theatre in 2022!

“Situated in the Cornish countryside, The White Heart Inn is ideal for a Christian getaway. Marvel at the grade II listed building, built in 1609 for the Bishop of Exeter. Enjoy what the quaint village has to offer. But please, for your own safety, stay away from the marshlands.”

An Evening of Deception has been amazing crowds for over a decade with the greatest magicians from the UK and abroad. Over the last 18 months the team have been performing regular shows online but can’t wait to get back on the stage. Performers include Steve Faulkner, Kerry Scorah and Richard Parsons, Tom Elliott and your host for the evening Steve Knibbs. Tickets sell out quickly, so get them while you can.

Five guests arrive at the inn, each with a different expectation. To sleep, to explore, to hunt for ghosts. Things take a turn when they hear about the violent past of the very grounds they are staying on. The eccentric owners of the inn, Bethel and Hector, seem obsessed by the marshes next door. Local pride? Or a connection to something more sinister? Content warning: contains violence, strangulation, death, homophobia, sexual references, pregnancy, strong language, and flashing lights.
