We’re Ready To Welcome You Back everymantheatre.org.uk
MAY - DEC 2021
We’re Ready To Welcome You Back I am delighted to be able to announce a new season of work and the opportunity to welcome you all back to our historic auditorium as we progress through the roadmap out of lockdown and a return to live entertainment. We have all been through a very challenging period and I hope that you are well and looking forward to a return to the shared experience of live theatre. We’ve done much work to prepare our venue and our staff to ensure that you will be greeted in the safest, most welcoming environment possible. We were very fortunate to have been in receipt of two grants from Arts Council England via the Culture Recovery Fund. These grants allowed us to protect jobs at the theatre and to undertake essential maintenance to ensure that the Everyman remains one one the country’s premier arts venues. These grants are a recognition of the high esteem and reputation of the Everyman Theatre throughout Gloucestershire, as well as nationally, and we will continue our efforts to maintain that high level of service to you. The programme of work that we have put together includes some of the productions we were forced to postpone over the previous year. Many of you may
have been issued vouchers for these productions. Our box office is ready to help you redeem those vouchers for tickets to these rescheduled performances and to help you book new tickets with a reassurance that you can BOOK WITH CONFIDENCE and EXCHANGE WITH EASE should you find it necessary to do so. We have received many messages of support throughout our closure and, on behalf of myself and the staff of the theatre, we are truly grateful. Your words and support have been truly encouraging and have been a reminder to us that the Everyman Theatre has an important place in Gloucestershire. We’re now ready to repay that support you’ve shown us by re-opening our doors and welcoming you back to enjoy the shared, artistic communion unique to live theatre. Sincerely,
Mark Goucher

PRESENTED BY LONDON CLASSIC THEATRE
Absurd Person Singular WRITTEN BY ALAN AYCKBOURN
SET DESIGN BY SIMON SCULLION
DIRECTED BY MICHAEL CABOT
COSTUME DESIGN BY KATE LYONS
Three married couples. Three kitchens. Three Christmas Parties. Sidney Hopcroft, a small-time tradesman, persuades wife Jane to throw a Christmas party hoping to find favour with a bank manager and local architect. As the celebrations get under way, class differences and naked ambition combine to hilarious effect as, one by one, the characters seek refuge in Jane’s kitchen. Over the next two years, the Jacksons and BrewsterWrights take turns to host festivities. But Sidney’s star has begun to rise and roles are increasingly reversed as the cracks in the other couples’ marriages begin to show. Alan Ayckbourn’s comic masterpiece of social climbing in 1970s suburbia fuses a potent mix of farce and black comedy. An Olivier and Tony Award winning playwright, Alan Ayckbourn’s 81 plays have been produced worldwide. Notable successes include: The Norman Conquests, Relatively Speaking, Bedroom Farce, A Chorus of Disapproval and Communicating Doors. Following their successful tour of Absent Friends in 2015, Alan Ayckbourn’s much-loved 1972 classic forms the centrepiece of London Classic Theatre’s 20th Anniversary celebrations.

Willy Russell’s Educating Rita
STARRING STEPHEN TOMPKINSON & JESSICA JOHNSON
Following the amazing success at the Minack Open Air Theatre, Cornwall, in August, which was widely reported worldwide, Olivier and Tony Awardwinning producer David Pugh is delighted to be bringing Willy Russell’s critically acclaimed comedy to the Everyman Theatre. When married hairdresser Rita enrols on a university course to expand her horizons, little does she realise where the journey will take her.

DAVID PUGH, TOLD BY AN IDIOT AND THEATRE ROYAL BATH PRODUCTIONS PRESENT
Charlie & Stan
WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY PAUL HUNTER
In 1910, the then unknown Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel set sail onboard a tramp steamer from Liverpool to New York as part of Fred Karno’s famous music hall troupe.
With an original piano score played live every night, Charlie and Stan is a hilarious and deeply moving homage to two men who changed the world of comedy forever.
On the voyage, they shared a cabin, they shared comedy routines and they shared laughter but by the end of the journey they had drifted apart...yet they would both go on to become the biggest stars of the age.
Told by an Idiot have garnered critical acclaim and devoted audiences worldwide for their wonderfully theatrical shows. With Charlie and Stan they have uncovered a hidden and poignant chapter of comedy history shining an unusual light on a pair of show business legends.
Inspired by real life events, Told by an Idiot’s acclaimed production of Charlie and Stan is the remarkable story of the greatest comedy double act that nearly was.
This “blissful entertainment” (Daily Telegraph) is coming to Cheltenham prior to London’s glittering West End.

A NEW ADVENTURES PRODUCTION
Matthew Bourne’s AJ and Curtis’ The Midnight Bell Big Night Out First ever visit from acclaimed choreographer Matthew Bourne, with a World Premiere Performance! Matthew Bourne’s new production for New Adventures explores the under-belly of 1930s London life where ordinary people emerge from cheap boarding houses nightly to pour out their passions, hopes and dreams in the pubs and bars of fog-bound Soho and Fitzrovia. Step inside The Midnight Bell, a tavern where one particular lonely-hearts club gather to play out their lovelorn affairs of the heart; bitter comedies of longing, frustration, betrayal and redemption. Inspired by the great English novelist Patrick Hamilton (Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky, Hangover Square) who created some of the most authentic fiction of his era; stories borne out of years of social interactions with the working man and woman at his favourite location - the London Pub. Master storyteller Bourne once again joins forces with the Olivier and Tony award-winning team of Lez Brotherston, Terry Davies, Paule Constable and Paul Groothuis for this brand new production. The cast features twelve of New Adventures’ finest performers in roles that will challenge and reveal the darker reaches of the human heart. This is a Dance Theatre event not to be missed.
“To tell a story without words is a rare gift, one Matthew Bourne uses to create a magical world you will never want to leave.” The Daily Telegraph

The Dresser
WRITTEN BY RONALD HARWOOD
STARRING JULIAN CLARY AND MATTHEW KELLY
Inspired by memories of working as Donald Wolfit’s dresser as a young man, Ronald Harwood’s evocative, affectionate and hilarious portrait of backstage life is one of the most acclaimed dramas of modern theatre.
Playing ‘Sir’ will be Matthew Kelly, winner of an Olivier Award for Of Mice and Men. His other West End credits include Waiting for Godot with Ian McKellen, Comedians and Troilus and Cressida. His many television credits include the award-winning thriller Cold Blood, Benidorm, Bleak House and Moving On.
It is 1942 and in a war-torn provincial theatre an ageing actor manager, known to his loyal acting company as ‘Sir’, is struggling to cling on to his sanity and complete his two hundred and twenty seventh performance of King Lear. It is down to Norman, Sir’s devoted dresser, to ensure that in spite of everything, the show goes on. For sixteen years Norman has been there to fix Sir’s wig, massage his ego, remind him of his opening lines and provide the sound effects in the storm scene.
Ronald Harwood’s plays include Taking Sides, Equally Divided and Quartet. His screenplay for the film of The Dresser received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Screenplay. He won an Academy Award for The Pianist.
Norman will be played by one of the UK’s most unique and best loved entertainers. Julian Clary’s successes encompass television, radio, films, writing and stand up comedy, which he has performed all over the world. His West End starring roles range from London Palladium pantomimes to Taboo.

The Ballad of Maria Marten WRITTEN BY BETH FLINTOFF
DIRECTED BY HAL CHAMBERS
Russell Howard: Respite
A thrilling retelling of a real-life murder mystery… Summer, 1827. In a red barn Maria Marten awaits her lover. A year later her body is found under the floor of the barn in a grain sack, barely identifiable, and the manhunt begins. Maria’s story sent shock waves throughout the country. The Red Barn Murder (as it became known) was national news, inspiring writers and filmmakers down the ages. The sort of gruesome tale that had all the hallmarks of a classic crime drama – a missing body, a country location, a disreputable squire and a village stuck in its age-old traditions. But in all this hysteria Maria’s own story gets lost. Until now. Hal Chambers and Beth Flintoff’s spine-tingling retelling rediscovers her story, bringing it back to vivid, urgent life. Recommended for ages 12+
Following the critically acclaimed sold out arena leg of his tour, Russell Howard returns with his biggest globe-spanning stand-up tour to date. Riding high on the success of his Sky One Show The Russell Howard Hour, and his global smash Netflix special Recalibrate, Russell is back on stage where he belongs, making sense of a world that’s spinning out of control.

The Good Life BYJEREMY SAMS. BASED ON THE TELEVISION SERIES BY JOHN ESMONDE AND BOB LARBEY
Remember the Goods - Tom and Barbara, suburban eco-warriors? And their next-door neighbours Margo and Jerry Leadbetter, desperately trying to maintain the Surbiton status quo? Well, they’re back – and on stage for the first time in The Good Life, a theatre reimagining of the TV sitcom that delighted countless millions in the 1970s. Jeremy Sams’s play leads the well-loved characters (not forgetting Geraldine the goat) through various adventures, some old, some new, all hilarious and often (even today) worryingly familiar.
Jeremy Sams is a multi award-winning director, writer, translator, orchestrator, musical director, film composer and lyricist. His directing credits include the National Theatre’s 2000 West End and Broadway revival of Noises Off, the West End musical Spend, Spend, Spend and the international tour of The Sound of Music. For more than thirty years, John Esmonde and Bob Larbey’s writing partnership was responsible for creating some of British sitcom’s greatest classics including Ever Decreasing Circles, Please Sir!, Brush Strokes and Mulberry.
This new play celebrates a time when, whatever our differences, we still managed to get on with our neighbours.

A Night OUT with Andy Hamilton
Jenny Éclair: Sixty (FFS)
Following a year of cancelled shows, zoom quizzes and nose-swabs, award-winning writer and comedian Andy Hamilton is delighted to be getting out of the house.
Having hit 60 (but still a year younger than Madonna), Jenny Eclair AKA ‘The Face of Vagisan’ confronts a new decade of decrepitude.
Join him in an evening of comic reflection, reminiscence and revelation, Andy will look back over his sixty-ish years on the planet and try to answer some questions. Expect a hilarious and illuminating night out, yes out, with a master of comedy.
Now that it takes 20 minutes of scrolling down to find her DOB when she’s filling in forms online, should she celebrate or crawl into a hole? What will her 60’s hold for this 1960’s babe and is it a legal requirement to buy Nordic walking poles?

She Stoops To Conquer
Three Men In A Boat
An 18th Century farce for all the family.
Sail on down the Thames with Three Men in a Boat (to say nothing of the dog).
Kate Hardcastle is a young lady fixed up to meet the eligible Marlow with a view to marriage. Marlow is a young gent who is tongue-tied with the upper classes and downright lecherous with commoners. So when Marlow is tricked into believing Kate’s ancestral home is a country inn, and mistakes Kate for a lowly barmaid what could possibly go wrong? Plenty! Set against the increasingly chaotic proceedings of one very long night, She Stoops to Conquer is a delightful romantic romp filled with ludicrous misunderstanding, mischief and mayhem
Join Jerome, Harris, George and Montmorency as they encounter a variety of people, places and peculiar maladies, and discuss various important topics such as ‘why very few people suffer sea-sickness on land’ and ‘the advantages of cheese as a travelling companion’. Following their previous successes with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (4* The Stage) and The Three Musketeers, IKP return with their unique brand of fast-paced, quickwitted storytelling in this timely adaptation of Jerome K Jerome’s iconic story. Voted the 2nd funniest book of all time by Esquire, Three Men in a Boat promises to entertain and delight. Contains partial nudity.

Mrs Lowry and Son WRITTEN BY MARTYN HESFORD
Performed by the Everyman Theatre’s professional company, Mrs Lowry and Son tells the story of one of the 20th century’s most popular artists. L.S. Lowry lived for many years in Salford with his bedridden mother, working as a rent collector by day and painting in his attic by night.

Martyn Hesford’s play - which was also made into a film starring Timothy Spall and Vanessa Redgrave - tells the story of the moving, humorous and absorbing relationship between Lowry and his beloved mother.

666 Comments In October 2010 cartoonist Gabby Shulz posted a comic strip on his website. It was about sexism online. What could possibly go wrong? Over the next three days the comic went viral and the comments went bananas. Some of them were witty, some of them were outrageous, some of them were just plain bizarre. 666 Comments is an attempt to stage that comment thread. Two performers, 57 characters, 666 comments.
Night Terrors: The Ghost Stories of E. F. Benson
Howerd’s End
A spine-tingling evening of three tales of the supernatural from E.F. Benson’s brilliant collection of ghost stories Night Terrors.
Frankie Howerd was one of Britain’s most loved comedians for half a century. But he had a secret. And the secret’s name was Dennis.
With masterful storytelling the award-winning actor Gerard Logan will transport you to a darker, more sinister world of the unexpected and the unexplainable.
This brand new play by Mark Farrelly (Quentin Crisp: Naked Hope and The Silence of Snow: The Life of Patrick Hamilton) takes you to the heart of Frankie and Dennis’ clandestine relationship, which lasted from the 1950s until Frankie’s death in 1992. It also affords a glorious opportunity to encounter Frankie in full-flight stand up mode.
The three stories (The Dance, In The Tube and The Confession of Charles Linkworth), are dramatic, haunting and hugely memorable.
Packed with laughter, but unafraid of truth, Howerd’s End portrays two humans’ journey through closeness, love, grief, and all the other things that make life worth living. Come and say farewell to a legend...and learn the art of letting go.

A Christmas Carol
Hansel & Gretel are so excited, it’s their favourite time of year – Christmas!
BY CHARLES DICKENS
But when they get lost deep in the woods, it seems Hansel & Gretel will never make it back in time for Christmas dinner… until they discover a whole host of new friends willing to help them out! And perhaps the Witch living in that delicious gingerbread house isn’t quite what she seems…
I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.
A brand new festive take on this classic fairy tale adventure, featuring beautiful puppets, innovative theatre and magical original music.
Featuring remarkable puppetry and all original music, Dickens’ classic is lovingly brought to life in the Everyman’s Irving Studio Theatre.
Ebenezer Scrooge, a cold, covetous, mean-spirited old sinner, despises cheer and festivity. But this Christmas, one magical night will change his life forever and thaw his icy heart.
The perfect show for children who may be too young for the main house pantomime experience.
