Welcome Back To Your Favourite Theatre The Everyman Theatre is delighted to wish you a very happy New Year and to offer a varied programme for 2020 that will hopefully have you visiting the theatre very shortly.

A special mention also goes out to our wonderful ushers. We would like to thank them for the work they do in looking after all the guests who visit this beautiful theatre.

We’ve had a fantastic 2019 which culminated with our most successful pantomime ever, Cinderella. We are grateful to all of you who contributed to our Christmas Charity, The Scrubditch Care Farm. Thanks to your donations we raised over £10000 for this great local charity which allows people with a variety of needs to spend time with animals in a farm setting near Cirencester.

Thank you for your support of the Everyman Theatre and we hope that you find many shows in our programme to enjoy in the months ahead. Sincerely,

I would like to take this opportunity to relay our condolences to the entire Giffords Circus family on the passing of their matriarch, Nell Gifford. We work very closely with the circus and know that this is a great loss to the whole community. We offer our best wishes and know that her spirit will live on in this year’s production.

Thu 13 – Sat 22 February Evenings: Mon – Sat 7.30pm •  Matinees: Thu and Sat 2.00pm Tickets from £15 D/GS/16/25 (see p.60) “Winningly captivating” The Independent “Shirley Valentine is perfect make-believe.” The Observer The Everyman Theatre Company, which brought Waiting for Godot, Quartet and A Passionate Woman to Cheltenham audiences, presents another modern classic.

“The play is at times funny, at others desolatingly sad, and at the end it emerges as a moving celebration of the independence of the human spirit.” The Telegraph

Shirley Valentine is a heart-warming comedy by Willy Russell, the writer of Blood Brothers, which has won multiple Olivier and Tony awards and has been adapted into an Oscar nominated film starring Pauline Collins and Tom Conti. Claire Sweeney (Brookside, Chicago and Guys and Dolls) plays the title role of Shirley who’s feeling stagnant and stuck in a rut in her empty nest, preparing egg and chips for her emotionally distant husband. When the opportunity arises to leave Merseyside behind for a holiday in Greece, Shirley leaves a note and heads for the sun where she starts to see the world and herself very differently. The Everyman Theatre Company is delighted to welcome Ian Talbot OBE to direct this brandnew staging. Ian’s extensive career includes being Artistic Director at the Open Air Theatre, Regent’s Park. Mon 24 – Sat 29 February Evenings: Mon – Sat 7.30pm • Matinee: Thu and Sat 2.00pm Tickets from £22 D/GS/16/25 (see p.60)

Robert Daws leads a star cast in the classic Ayckbourn comedy. Ten Times Table is the inaugural production of The Classic Comedy Theatre Company, produced by Bill Kenwright and his team behind The Agatha Christie, The Classic Thriller and The Classic Screen to Stage Theatre Companies – which between them have enjoyed over 15 years of theatrical success across the UK. In the long-since “grand” ballroom of the local Swan Hotel, a most miscellaneous assemblage gather to conduct the business of the Pendon Folk Festival, led by excitable chairman Ray. Unfortunately for Ray, his calamitous committee quickly divides, as his wife Helen has a bone to pick… Add a Marxist schoolteacher, a military dog-breeder and an octogenarian secretary, and the table is set for one of comedy master Ayckbourn’s most hilarious plays. This tumultuous comedy by committee is not to be missed. The star cast includes leading stage and TV actor Robert Daws (The Royal, Outside Edge and Roger Roger); Deborah Grant (Not Going Out and Bergerac); Craig Gazey (Coronation Street and The Full Monty, West End); Gemma Oaten (Emmerdale, Holby City); Mark Curry (Bedroom Farce, Dangerous Corner); Robert Duncan (Drop The Dead Donkey) and Elizabeth Power (EastEnders).

From the International best-selling author of War Horse, The Mozart Question is a collaboration between Cirencester’s Barn Theatre and the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham presenting a world premiere of a powerful story set against the backdrop of the holocaust. Featuring ten actor musicians, the story of renowned violinist Paolo Levi is brought to life on stage in an extraordinary journey that takes the audience from the musician as a young boy, and leads them through the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps. A powerful adaptation, that at its core, champions hope, love and the pursuit of truth. With a great classical score, The Mozart Question is a new work that may go on to be as successful as Mopurgo’s greatest works.

“It is the most important story I have ever written, about the best and most beautiful and most heavenly that is in us, and the worst and most wicked and most hellish too. I have no doubt we are creating a play worthy of the immensity of the tragedy, a play that reflects the power of music to heal, to bring reconciliation and peace in a troubled world.”

‘A TAPESTRY OF GREATEST HITS’ THE GUARDIAN

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, the Olivier award-winning West End and Broadway show is coming to the Everyman Theatre! Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit song-writing team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation, with countless classics such as (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Take Good Care of My Baby, You’ve Got a Friend, So Far Away, It Might as Well Rain Until September, Up on the Roof, and The Locomotion.

Gerald the Giraffe has a tall, thin neck and long, slim legs. He’s great at reaching the highest shoots on the tallest trees, but he’s not so good at dancing. Now the annual Jungle Dance is just around the corner, and Gerald is longing to join the waltzing warthogs, rock’n’rolling rhinos and cha-cha cha-ing chimps on the dancefloor. But everyone knows that giraffes can’t dance… or can they? A much-loved book for over 20 years, Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees’ African jungle bursts to life with puppetry, songs, and a company of five playing warthogs, lions, rhinos, chimps – and a very special violin-playing cricket. Perfect for audiences aged 2+, Giraffes Can’t Dance encourages everyone to dance to their own rhythm, and to just be a little more Gerald. 42  Box Office: 01242 572573 Everymantheatre.org.uk

Thu 10 – Sat 19 September Evenings: Mon – Sat 7.30pm, Matinees: Thu and Sat 2.00pm Tickets from £15 D/GS/16/25 (see p.60)

Inspired by memories of working as Donald Wolfit’s dresser as young man, Ronald Harwood’s evocative, affectionate and hilarious portrait of backstage life is one of the most acclaimed dramas of modern theatre. It is 1942 and in a war-torn provincial theatre an aging actor manager, known to his loyal acting company as ‘Sir’, is struggling to cling on to his sanity and complete his two hundred and twenty seventh performance of King Lear. It is down to Norman, Sir’s devoted dresser, to ensure that in spite of everything, the show goes on. For sixteen years Norman has been there to fix Sir’s wig, massage his ego, remind him of his opening lines and provide the sound effects in the storm scene. Norman will be played by one of the UK’s most unique and best loved entertainers. Julian Clary’s successes encompass television, radio, films, writing and stand up comedy, which he has performed all over the world. His West End starring roles range from London Palladium pantomimes to Taboo. Playing ‘Sir’ will be Matthew Kelly, winner of an Olivier Award for Of Mice and Men. His other West End credits include Waiting for Godot with Ian McKellen, Comedians and Troilus and Cressida. His many television credits include the awardwinning thriller Cold Blood, Benidorm, Bleak House and Moving On. Ronald Harwood’s plays include Taking Sides, Equally Divided and Quartet. His screenplay for the film of The Dresser received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Screenplay. He won an Academy Award for The Pianist.

A rollicking night of cabaret storytelling about post-natal depression??!!

Jackie Oates is synonymous with the reinvigoration of English folk. Her mellifluous voice, plaintive fiddle and tantalizing approach to traditional songs gained her several BBC Folk Awards.

It’s time for Queer Lady M’s cabaret! Performed by Shane Gabriel (Funny Girls), Lady Macbeth comes to life like you’ve never experienced before.

Ten years ago, Chloe started writing a show. It was RAZAMATAZZ. It had a clown, and songs, and something about a grand piano. But then she had kids (which was tricky) and life got in the way. And that show never quite made it through. Now she’s a decade older, Chloe’s decided she’s going to make her comeback and finish it off. This is her chance to make a mark. To deal with the Big Stuff. To leave an inheritance for when she’s gone.

John Spiers has made a name for himself as one of the leading melodeon players of his generation. A key part of the multi award-winning Bellowhead and also well known for his recent work with Peter Knight. Sure to be a wonderful evening this is a rare opportunity to see them together live in such an intimate venue.

With a cheeky glint in its eye and a steely determination to talk about all the things you’re meant to keep quiet, The Slow Songs Make Me Sad blends together hilarious clowning heartfelt storytelling and raucous cello songs. Presented by Buzz Buzz Buzz

54  Box Office: 01242 572573 Everymantheatre.org.uk

There’s outrageous lip-syncing, cheeky dancing and sassy conversation as Queer Lady M invites you to enter her world of passion and shade. But what happens when the show is over, when Shane removes the makeup and puts Lady M to bed? What stories will come to light as we’re invited into Shane’s twilight world? Find out in 1623’s funny and moving exploration of a unique relationship between alter-ego who join forces to fight tragedy and celebrate queerness. Queer Lady M brings together devised performance, Shakespeare and drag while exploring the real-life experiences of working-class, genderfluid artist Shane Gabriel.

In these two tales of terror by H P Lovecraft, the American master of the weird tale, an art critic and a philosopher get pushed to the very edge of sanity by the images and sounds they confront.

A new series of plays by the Everyman Theatre’s Writer’s Lab.

If a house could talk what memories would it share and what secrets would it unfold?

Gallery of Screams

Pickman’s Model introduces us to the uncannily brilliant work of Richard Upton Pickman – a genius shunned by the artistic establishment because of his sickening canvases. It is paired here with The Music of Eric Zann, an eerie and baffling tale that Lovecraft himself counted as a personal favourite. Robert Lloyd Parry has spent the last 14 years enacting The M R James Project, a series of one-man shows based on classic English ghost stories. Here he crosses the Atlantic to pay tribute to James’s exact contemporary – a stranger, sadder man but one with an arguably even greater talent for bringing nightmares to life.

Celebrating the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe, with stories that explore the themes, history and legacy of this historic event. A thought-provoking, amusing and contemporary night of new writing in the Irving Studio Theatre.

Who has walked through its rooms and what joy or sadness has it seen? Over the decades many lives have been lived in number 14 Hope Street, but what is the connection between the current owners and ghosts from the past? A tale of generations, of moments in history and of family struggles within one Victorian house. Performed by students from the University of Gloucestershire.
