Brief 7 : Ely Harvest festival

Ely Cathedral is the principal church of the Diocese of Ely, in Cambridgeshire, England, and is the seat of the Bishop of Ely and a suffragan bishop, the Bishop of Huntingdon. It is known locally as "the ship of the Fens", because of its prominent shape that towers above the surrounding flat and watery landscape. Built by William the Conqueror as a prominent outpost after the bloody and lengthy rebellion by Hereward he Wake, Ely Cathedral stands as a fine example of William's devotion to his Religion and to his overwhelming victory for the Heart's and Minds of that mixed of all races called the britons.

Brief 7 : Ely Harvest festival

Harvest Festival is a celebration of the food grown on the land. Thanksgiving ceremonies and celebrations for a successful harvest are both worldwide and very ancient. In Britain, we have given thanks for successful harvests since pagan times. We celebrate the harvest during the months of Sept / Oct. It reminds Christians of all the good things God gives them and makes them want to share with others who are not so fortunate. In schools and in Churches, people bring food from home to a Harvest Festival Service. After the service, the food that has been put on display is usually made into parcels and given to people in need.

Board 3 : Design development

Using the research I collected reguarding harvest festivals, I looked into what foods are often given to the less fortunate, as well as seasonal fruit and veg that are harvested in Sept / Oct time. Below are some illustrations I made that I applied to the posters for the event. I chose to keep them simple, appealing to all ages especially children. The colours I chose are warm autumn colours, and to keep the artwork consistant I decided just to use 4 colours.

Board 4 : Developing posters

I was asked by the NFU to come up with three seperate poster designs for the pitch to Ely Cathedral. After constructing the illustrations I started to typeset the information I was sent. I chose Apercu, as it is a clean and inviting sans serif font that I believe to be quite versitile. The design below shows my experimentation with a simple grid layout, placing my illustrations in a set of squares. I also drew up the Ely Cathedral cress, which is a set of three keys. I thought this could be a starting pont for a logo for the event. I wasn’t the only branding I had to consider, as I had to include the NFU logo within the design as they were sponsering and reporting the event via their website and monthly magazine.

Board 5 : Developing posters

Ely Cathedral is well known for it’s beautiful architecture and stain glass windows. Through my research I discovered that the harvest festival is quite a religious celebration, therefore I decided to run with a design based around a design of a stain glass window with all the elements of my illustration placed in a window frame. This idea was a success however I found the window frame shape hard to work with when it came to type setting and laying out all the information on the poster.

Board 6 : Final poster

The final poster design I produced that in the end got selected for the event included both elements of my previous two designs. I drew a field scene that I applied the fruit and veg to, as well as a cathedral that is set on a blue sky that acts as negative space enabling me to typeset the festival information at the top in a simple 4 collum grid. I think the strong composition of the poster allows me to play around with the hierarchy of the information.
