Brief 17 : Edible Type

We have taken part in the Typogateau in the past and we have seen some great ideas and winner during the three years we have been here. Tom and myself have experimented with typographic food in the past for example Tom’s successful Eat My Type project and the Type Anatomy cake that placed third in first year.

We thought long and hard about what we wanted to achieve this year and we decided to experiment with ice as no one has ever entered an ice piece to the competition! Therefore we put together some inspiration regarding colour, ice lolly shapes and letter molds. We also found some examples of how letters have been cut and moulded out of biscuits, fruit and jelly. Due to the competition being in winter we found it very difficult to find any letter moulds / ice lolly moulds so we have to be imaginative regarding logistics.

We had a range of different ideas for this years competition however we went for an idea based on the play on words ICE CAPS as we wanted to make something quite typographical but made out of ice! We came up with the idea of making a series of typographic flavoured ice lollies. Not only did we want to craft the lollies, we thought it would be fun to make some packaging therefore we ordered some silver paper that we could print onto. Below are some quick vector experiments to be used as applied branding.

After a few days of planning we bought the ingredients to make our ice lollies. Initially we just wanted to make them out of ice but to achieve the bright colours we decided to use yoghurt instead. The night before the competition we had to plan out the logistics of how we would mould the lollies as we could not find any plastic moulds, instead we made them out of cardboard. I sketched some rough plans out to show to Tom, so he could craft the moulds so we could start freezing them the night before the competition. We invented each flavour ourselves.

Whilst the ice lollies were in the freezer, I printed out the designs onto the special silver paper we ordered. The designs came out brilliantly as the vibrant colours of the illustrations really stood out. Tom crafted the packaging the morning of the competition and presented them all in a bucket of ice. We sadly didn’t place.
