Brief 1 : Yoke presents Dialogue
In the early stages of the project we collected all our thoughts and research into a research book, which later acted as a visual guide throughout the development of Dialogue.

Board 2 : Yoke identity
Dialogue Exhibition Logo
Together we finalised a name and a logo for our collaboration as well as a name and a visual identity for the exhibition. For the two to work together we decided that the collaboration should be a simple letterform symbol but still relate back to the of an exhibition. We felt the 'y' does this as it is made up of 3 shapes, these three shapes separately show the idea of walls and building things up to create an exhibit.
The name and theme of the exhibition is dialogue. We wanted to make the logo represent these features and be something that can stand alone on its own. The logo was created from a sourced typeface. Within the typeface there are speech marks that have been used to create a letterform. This gave the typeface another meaning and tied in perfectly with the theme of dialogue.

Board 3 : Exhibition space in Leeds
We spent a few days contacting galleries and various venues in Leeds to see if they were interested in hosting an exhibition. We sent them a brief outline of what we wanted to achieve, to see what their response was. These venues varied in size and price range which was interesting, especially for future reference. After visiting a few spaces the Corn exchange seemed the most promising. It is a beautiful building with intermit and charming shop spaces. We talked to the general management there and discussed our idea about a pop up shop / exhibition and cost. We discovered it would be ÂŁ100 to rent out a top floor space at the Corn Exchange for a week.

Board 4 : Brief & Proposal
To secure a space at the Corn exchange we put together a proposal as well as a brief that outlined the theme and specifications of the exhibition. We also sent the proposal form to the college in order to get some funding.

Dear Anys, We are writing to you following our discussion on the phone about the possibility of renting a space for a week in Leeds Corn Exchange. We have provided a short proposal below of our intentions of the use of the space.
About Yoke
Yoke is a duo based in Leeds with an aim to curate an exhibition space that spurs dialogue between creatives. With a background in Graphic design at Leeds College Of Art, Yoke aims to bridge the gap between university and the creative industry.
Yoke wel comes creatives from all exhibition. We’re now ready to start recieving your ideas based around the theme of ‘Dialogue’.

The theme of the exhibition is ‘dialogue’ where each creative will submit a design that will be used in a blind collaboration. Contributors must be open to their submissions being manipulated through the use of print and the match making process, that will pair two submissions together. This will create a series of screen-printed artworks that will be displayed throughout the series of events.

Below are some examples of our interpretation of the brief. In summary ‘submissions can take any form of the theme. It could reflect directly on past conversations, forms of interaction or it could spread further afield to what you think communication is today.' The designs were mixed, matched and manipulated through the process of screen printing. We intend to make them into post cards that will be sent out with the brief / promotional materials.

Brief 1 : Yoke presents Dialogue
The screen printed postcards were a success as we were pleased with how well our designs translated the brief and complimented one another. We experimented with a range of inks, including a fluorescent pink and yellow which we made into a gradient. We produced a large amound of prints, that we intend to send out to studios, as well as areas around the college campass.

6 : Invites
Our exhibition is about creating dialogue so we like the idea of using envelopes with a twist. For example the envelope below will be sewn around the edges so you have to make the conscious effort to tear it open. The attention to detail is great and it really engages a memorable mail shot. Inside the mail shot will a screen printed post card attched (through the use of slots)to a double sided leaflet outlining what Dialogue is, along with the specifications of the brief.

Level 6
We wanted to create a dialogue with local creatives and studios by sending out personal invites to submit to Dialogue. We screen-printed A6 postcards in which the designs were put together by our own interpretation of the brief. We incased the postcards along with a printed brief within a sewn up envelope. The invites were a success amongst our classmates and the studios we sent them out to. This is where the concept of Dialogue all together works really well as we are interacting with people through the process of giving them out in person / posting them. In return people have photographed their invites and mentioned us in their tweets and instagrams.

Board 8 : Exhibition Poster
To to advertise the exhibition we printed a two colour poster, using similar colours to the prints that were to be exhibited. The poster was primarily to advertise the opening night, but also to rasie awareness of running times. Using the fonts and branding, we typeset the names of the people that submitted as the base layer and for the top layer we overprinted the information about the exhibition - this included opening night details, a brief description of the exhibition, exhibition full running dates and where it is held. We put up the posters up all around college and in the centre of Leeds.

Board 9 : Curating the space
Pop-up shops and exhibition are becoming popular in the UK as it is a cost effective way of making money/ putting on events without signing a lease. At the beginning of this project we noticed that Leeds Corn Exchange had a lot of empty units, therefore we decied to investigate how we could use the empty spaces effectively. We chose a large unit with fantastic windows that let in lots of light. We gave the space a lick of paint and took away old carpets leaving bare white floor boards. Using the research we collected we thought about interesting ways of displaying work and with the help of Nathans Dad we managed to build frames to hang the artwork from. It took a lot of time management to effectively get the exhibition space set up as well as print / organise everything at the same time.

Board 10 : The matchmaking process
We asked a variety of creatives and studios to submit work that would be used in a collaborative way, to be showcased in a final exhibition called Dialogue (this would also be the theme). Each designer consented to this, with the understanding they would not be able to choose their creative parnters. Therefore the contributions had to be open to their submissions being manipulated through the use of print and the matechmaking process that paired two submissions together, in order to make a series of screen printed artworks. We had over 150 submissions to pair which was a mountain of a task however to make our lives easier we printed each submission out with the studio ink jet printer and layed them out on the floor. We enjoyed the pairing process which we mainly based on themes and compositions. We also had to take into account what artwork worked as background layers and over prints.

Brief 1 : Yoke presents Dialogue
Although we had originally planned to keep the exhibition local, we decided to invite many from further afield via the net and we ended up with over 150 submissions from creatives and studios around the world. Within two weeks we had the mammoth task of screen-printing the artworks. We lived in the print studios from morning to dusk and exposed over 50 screens. To complete this task we rotated screens and came up with an efficient system to help achieve our goal, this consisted of taking turns to wash, coat and expose screens whilst the other prints a run of artworks, mixes colours and cleans down bed and squeegeeys. This project was all about teamwork and Nathan and myself made a great pair.

Level 6
Brief 1 : Yoke presents Dialogue
We were really interested in curating spaces. Therefore we researched a lot into how work could be displayed and how an audience could interact with it. In this case we produced wooden frames to place on the curve of the large windows to hang work from. We also borrowed a lighting rig, as we felt it was exstremely important to create a space with good lighting to show off the work as the current lights didn’t make much difference and were rather dim. The opening night itself was a huge success that was supported by local creatives from Leeds and further afield. During the night we were asked to do interviews with local blogs and media students. We even hired a photographer and film maker to capture the night whilst we spoke and wellcomed people to the exhibition.

Board 13 : Selling artwork
When we initially planned the exhibition the subject of selling the artwork came up many times however we weren't sure how to go about it. The complicated part of it was that the artwork wasn't ours, we had part of it because we printed it, but there was also 2 other designers involved in one print. So it meant if we were to sell a print the profit would have to be split by 4. We dismissed selling the work as it would of been a lot of work for us dealing with the admin of sorting the money to each person. However after the opening night we had many people interested in buying the prints, we came up with the idea of emailing each contributor stating that demand for buying the artwork was high and that we felt it was a great idea to sell the prints. We thought it would be great to use the money to invest in a second exhibition.
