THE ANNUAL HOLIDAY BUZZ IS BACK! BUZZ BOXX and Buzz It Forward is an initiative designed to help build better communities by awarding sponsored haircare services and mentoring sessions to at-risk youth and members of the community. “Our goal for the holidays is to raise money to fund 500 total haircuts for 2024,” said Amir Youssef, Chief Creative Officer for Buzz Boxx. “When you look better, you feel better and in-turn, you do better! Our solution serves youth centers, foster homes, homeless shelters, schools, community centers, religious organizations, group
homes, and military bases.” The team will install a Buzz Boxx as an in-house solution for selected organizations(s), and the youth of Jersey City. “We will award non-profit partners with toys/funds for haircuts for the 2023/2024 Holiday season to benefit these youths and veterans in the city.” The Buzz It Forward event takes place on Forrest Street, Jersey City, NJ, on Monday December 11th from 12pm to 5pm. ROLDA TOOK CROWDS BY STORM AT THEIR RECENT GLOBALLY-CELEBRATED ROLDA BARBER TOUR 2023. THE WEEKEND WAS PACKED WITH EDUCATION SEMINARS, AMBASSADORS MEET-UPS, BARBER BATTLE COMPETITIONS, A VENDOR MARKETPLACE, FASHION SHOWCASES, AND AN AWARD CEREMONY. ALL IN THE NAME OF UPLIFTING AND CELEBRATING BARBERS. Attendees hailed from out-of-state locations, such as California, Colorado, and Texas, among others. The education seminars culminated with a meet and greet session, which featured all the educators and Rolda ambassadors. Those who participated in the educational sessions left with a renewed sense of enthusiasm and a strong drive to continue their educational journey. Rolda’s Gianni said: “The audience remained highly involved during the Barber Battles, fervently cheering on the competitors. The excitement reached its peak when we unveiled an exclusive launch of three new products, releasing soon. “Additionally, the announcement of the winner for the barber competitions added an extra layer of excitement.
In short, the energy remained consistently remarkable throughout the entire event!” Leveraging the insights gained from their inaugural event in 2022, Gianni and the team implemented various enhancements, resulting in a more gratifying experience for their attendees. “Our vendor marketplace expanded significantly compared to the previous year,” he explained. “All of these modifications contributed to a sold-out status for both the Barber Battles and the education seminar!” As a result, the show was bigger AND better than last year. “This time around, our event boasted a remarkable turnout, with over 1,000 participants – a substantial growth. We effectively drew in a significant number of out-of-state attendees and forged valuable partnerships with multiple barber academies that recognized the benefits for their students.” The Rolda International Barber Tour delivers value, irrespective of where you stand in your barbering career. Education seminars are open to all barbers who are dedicated to continual improvement and perfecting their techniques. Gianni continued:
“We highlight a dedicated competition for students, creating a platform for novice barbers to compete within their peer group.” The first place winner of the Student category Barber Battles will join the Rolda team as a promotional brand ambassador for 2024.“These events promote networking among barbers,” Gianni said, “Fostering connections, regardless of their age or experience level.” The vendor marketplace benefits barbers of all types as vendors offer special prices during the event. The inspiration for my look was to present a classic, clean, elegant haircut to the judges. My main tool to achieve that look from the beginning wasn’t physical; more about identifying what style suited my model, and using whatever the tools were to my advantage."

“For any barbers and stylists out there who are looking to elevate their career in 2024, I think it is important to do these three things,” Rodrick explained. “Number one, choose your hard. I think a lot of the time we avoid change because it's hard. It is uncomfortable. But I think that you should gravitate more to those things that make you uncomfortable. If you’re not proficient in styling longer hair, or you’re not proficient in braiding or doing locs or whatever, you should gravitate towards these hard things, not away from them. “Number two, remember your ‘why’. It is so important every once in a while, to remind ourselves why we love what we do. What drove you to this industry? What makes you passionate about what you do? Oftentimes, our day-to-day lives and stress pull our attention away from that ‘why’, but we have to remind ourselves so that we can become reinspired and push ourselves to do greater things.
“The third thing is to always be reinventing yourself. An object at rest stays at rest. If you continue to do the same thing year in, and year out and expect a different result, we know that is the definition of insanity. So, I think it’s always important to reinvent ourselves, whether that be offering a new service, changing up your own look, or maybe even moving to another location or working with a different demographic. To grow, we need to be comfortable with the uncomfortable.” This time of year is all about reflection on where you are, what you have achieved, and the targets you want to set for yourself for the year to come. For the ambitious folks out there who want to take 2024 to the next level, I asked Rodrick for his advice on setting goals. He said: “When I first started out in the industry, I would set both my long-term and short-term goals. You know, there’s the old adage that goes, ‘If you want to make the universe laugh, make plans.’ Initially, I just wanted to be a barber and do tapers and fades. Then I had a young lady come in to drop her son off to get a haircut, and I asked her, ‘Where are you off to?’ She said: ‘I am going to get a shampoo and a blow-out.’ And I was like, man, I just let $75.00 walk out that door. That was the very moment I decided to go to cosmetology school. “So, to answer your question, yes, I think setting goals is important for progression. However, the more experience I have gained, the more I have learned to trust the universe to help me navigate through what the future looks like. I would consider myself a bit of a big dreamer, but sometimes those dreams aren’t necessarily what is best. So, I tend to look back on my experiences and let my past help guide me to where I want

THE TIME FOR A FINANCIAL HEALTH CHECK IS NOW. PREP FOR A FRUITFUL 2024 BY LAYING OUT WHAT YOU NEED, WHAT YOU DON’T NEED, AND HOW YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE YOUR NEXT FINANCIAL GOALS. OUR COLUMNIST, TYRIK JACKSON, OUTLINES THE FIVE KEY POINTS OF YOUR FINANCIAL HEALTH CHECK. The final quarter of 2023 marks the end of the fiscal year and is the ideal time to evaluate where your business has thrived, identify where it has faltered, and strategize a winning plan for 2024. After December 31, you can't go back and make any adjustments to your plan for the first quarter – that’s why you need to carry out your financial health check now. Here’s where to start…
1. Re-evaluate your liability You must consider spending habits, saving habits, debt levels, and pension savings, including predicted state pension and pension funds you are invested in, and any other investments or financial goals.
2. Develop a new plan Base your new plan off your failures from 2023, or elements of your business that you dropped the ball on. Structure this new plan around what you can do better. Doing better means utilizing all of your skills, which ultimately expands your horizons to achieve the things you didn’t think were possible last year. Do not leave anything undone because
there will also be things you started – projects, strategies, education, financial planning, branding, etc. – but did not complete. Highlight these and make sure you focus your efforts on executing undone plans in 2024.
3. Financial safety and security There's a difference between what you need, what you can do, and what you want. I have done entire classes on tattoos, shoes, and cannabis. That’s what we find students are spending their money on! And they don’t need any of it. For the first six to eight months of the year, commit to no ridiculous spending. Live off your basic needs like mortgage, food, travel, rent, utilities – all these things. But save everything else. This gives you security when you do start investing in your bigger plans, to know that you have a fall back. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again and again: you must have discipline. Budget all of your expenses down to things like subscriptions for Amazon or Netflix. If you’re serious about being successful, you must start modestly and work hard.

4. Re-evaluate your growth This is the time to eliminate excess debt, and invest your time, energy, and data into active growth strategy. This strategy includes boosting your credit score, putting away a good amount of savings, considering things like getting into real estate, and looking at where to start educating yourself. When it comes to credit cards – you should have two per entity. What I mean by that is, having two credit cards for yourself and then two for your business. You can have those extra cards because they help with your credit score, and they help with maintaining good healthy credit, but they are not to be utilized for spending because that will put you in debt.
5. Resources You need a business attorney. Get someone that gels with you and that knows the barbering or services industries. These professionals will understand the requirements for your business and help you allocate money appropriately. Also make sure you get yourself an accountant. The same goes for this professional relationship – make sure you find someone with experience in the right areas; someone that is willing to learn about you, your business, the incomings and outgoings, your management style, and your vision for your enterprise. Stay away from some cookie cutter tax consultant, or just a general CPA who sees you as an employee. Go for someone who sees you as a business partner. The best way to find one? They’ve probably sat in your chair. You talk to people for a living, so ask clients if they either know anyone who can provide that professional service or can provide that themselves. Ask the right questions and the right people will come to you.

I did some very exciting television work with Kevin Hart this year in his new series, Hart of It All, which airs on Peacock. Initially, they just wanted to film an episode in my barbershop, Main Attraction, but then Kevin and I got talking and we ended up filming a segment on modern entrepreneurship, focussing mainly on the work I do with Barbers Who Care.
Once that conversation was opened, Kevin could see what takes place, seeing what we're doing with Barbers Who Care. He especially loved the aspect of our initiative that aims to expose young minds, and those who are less fortunate, to better information and providing access to better resources. The opening of the Noyes’ first location is truly a family business. Stephanie and Josh are working closely with niece Angelina Thomas (Director of Marketing & Education) and nephew Rich Thomas (Operating Partner) in growing the business with at least three more locations planned in the Tampa Bay area by the end of 2024. Adam said: “It has always been a dream of ours to open our own franchise. Our family has many great friendships with very successful Franchisees, and Floyd’s was the right opportunity for us”, said Stephanie.
Josh said: “I grew up in Clearwater, so our first location is suited perfectly to begin our Franchise journey. I have a passion for music along with elevated barbershop experiences, so Floyd’s was the excellent fit for us!” The Noyes family has exclusive development rights for the Tampa Bay market. They have already signed their lease on a second shop in the Edge District of St. Pete on Central Avenue planning to open in May 2024. They are also identifying their next shops for South Tampa, Carrollwood, and the SR 54 Corridor. “We are thrilled to bring Floyd’s across Tampa Bay. It starts with one in Clearwater, providing great client experiences that keep them coming back! FLOYD’S 99 BARBERSHOP, MAITLAND What was once considered an eyesore in booming downtown Maitland has been revamped into the lively, fun environment that is characteristic of a Floyd’s 99 Barbershop. Floyd’s in Maitland provides customers with a full range of services, including haircuts, shaving, color, waxing, deep conditioning treatments and styling. In addition to traditional hair services, Floyd’s is known for its iconic barbershop straightrazor neck shave with hot lather and steamed towels and a complimentary shoulder massage after each service. The new Maitland location is owned and operated by entrepreneurs Kyle and Sarah Sleeth. Sarah, who grew up just down the street from this new location, is excited to breathe new life into her cherished hometown. Sarah's late father, a devoted community advocate and a former

TRANSFORMING A CLASSIC STYLE TO SOMETHING CONTEMPORARY AND CAMERA-READY – THIS IS THE PICTURE OF MODERN BARBERING. STEP 1 To create Mario’s look, the first step is to use a clipper with a number six attachment guard (3/4 of an inch). Go over the entire head with and against the grain of the hair until it is all the same length. STEP 2 Next, you will create a triangular section starting at the recession and work your way to the apex. Then work from the opposite recession to the apex. Securely clip the fringe section out of the way. Once you’ve sectioned off the fringe, you will now work on the sides. Use your clipper with a number 2 attachment guard and make sure the taper lever is open to debulk. STEP 3 Then use your clipper with a 1.5 attachment guard accompanied by your fade comb to connect the sides and top. Hold the comb vertically and ride the comb with your clipper
from bottom to top. (Do this around the entire head so that the sides and top are fully connected). Now use your trimmers to create a guideline about a fingers width above the ear. This will ensure we are leaving enough space to fade up towards the longer length of hair. Start at the front hairline and work towards the center back of the head. Then repeat the same process on the opposite side of the head. STEP 4 After completing the previous step, we need to make sure that it's symmetric. Take a step back so you can clearly see exactly what you've cut. Then refine the guideline if you see any inconsistencies. Now, use your trimmers to remove the excess length of hair below your guide line and work up towards the guideline which we have initially created. This will make everything below the guideline the same length.

“THE RAZOR LINE-UP WILL IMPROVE THE SHAPE OF THE HAIRCUT AND MAINTAIN THE OUTLINES AND CLEANLINESS. THIS IS YOUR KEY TO CRISP CUTS EVERY TIME.” STEP 5 Next you will use your electric shaver and cut the hair down to skin. This is the shortest length it can possibly be. Work your way from the bottom of the head up to about a half an inch below your trimmer guide line which you initially created. Now use your shaver in a flicking out motion in the half of an inch area left below the trimmer guide line to create a smooth transition from skin to the trimmer length. STEP 6 Next, use your clipper with the taper lever half way open to create a new guide line right above your trimmer guide line. This will be about an inch above your trimmer guide line. Now use the clipper with the taper level closed starting at the trimmer line and working your way to the second guideline we have made with the clipper. As you move up towards the second guide gradually open up your taper lever. Once you get to the second guideline your taper lever should be half way open. Now you will fade down starting just below the curvature of the head using your clipper with the number 2 attachment guard with the level open and work your way down to the zero attachment guard with the level closed to blend into the second guideline we created; Remember to consistently brush away any loose hair that is stuck to the skin.
STEP 7 After you’ve completed the fade, you will move onto the front hairline. Use your trimmer to create a straight line across. Start at the center and work your way to the corner that is naturally higher. Use the area you just completed as your initial guide. Then work from the center to the opposite corner. Be sure to not push the clients hairline too far back, you want to keep it as natural as possible. Once you’ve completed the front hairline, take a step back. Look at the front hairline from a distance to check for balance and consistency. STEP 8 After finishing the front hairline, you will now move down to the sides of the front line up. Use the eyebrows and the corner of the eyes as a guide to check the line up for balance of both sides. STEP 9 Next you will use a straight razor to go over the entire outline that you have created using your trimmers. The razor line up will improve the shape of the haircut and maintain the outlines and cleanliness. STEP 10 Now, use the styling product of your choice and apply it to the hair. Congratulations, you now have completed this look!

Style: I use Molding Clay whenever I can! It’s great for clients who have different textures in their hair or who sweat a lot at work and naturally. Though his health challenges persist, his story stands as a testament to seizing control over one's health. So, what steps can hairstylists take to safeguard their well-being? David's counsel begins with heightened awareness and understanding of one's body positions. Rather than outrightly banning certain stances, the emphasis lies in introducing movement and diversity throughout the day. Joints are designed for mobility. David and his co-founder Joseph Andrews have curated a multi-service space that seamlessly blends the world of coffee with the world barbering. The interior is split by opposite sides of the color wheel to create definition between service areas. The blue and yellow color scheme is present in every fitting, piece of furniture, and appliance, from the intricate mosaic tile flooring to the coffee machines and stunning yellow Takara Belmont chairs. The founders are naturally stylish people, channeling their love for fashion and abstract geometric design into their space. Where did inspiration for the space come from? David gave us the intel: “We wanted to capture a fashionforward theme based around ‘80s GUCCI aesthetics and Parisian interior design. Both representing a lively, celebratory environment. We want people to feel undeniably welcomed. As if entering your favorite relative’s home!” We’d guess that David and Joseph are the cool uncles... There are a few key elements that separate the House of Aanuko design from the rest. David said: “Our open floor plan strengthens our brand with the ‘living room’ as the centerpiece, representing the heart and soul of the ‘vibe’. Our Coffee & Matcha Bar serves as the kitchen. Finally, an exciting social chaos is created between the barber and the client, which orbits around the perimeter. Dani began: “One of my favorite quotes is, ‘We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.’” After opening Garrett Michael Barbershop in downtown Salt Lake City, Dani’s marketing budget limited her to sweeping her front sidewalk, offering passersby a complimentary hot towel face and neck shave. As soon as one of these passersby sat in her chair, they transformed into clients. Word of mouth took off, and soon Garrett Michael was full to the brim with business. “I wanted to be a barber since I was a child but only came into it in my thirties. Opening the shop a decade ago is the best thing I’ve done. Really curating my interior style and my professional style is what set me apart when I couldn’t charge more than $13 for a haircut!” Dani’s success in the barbering world came through hard work, networking, and overcoming adversity. “If there is one thing I’ve learned, and studied, it’s that how we treat others and how we treat ourselves is ultimately where we will find the answers that we are all searching for.” Team EVO felt the passion and love for

Walls are a mix of Milwaukee’s own Cream City brick and traditional red brick, creating an industrial aesthetic. The Golden Hare team tied in live-edge wood for their barber’s stations, then added a little bit of creativity melding their styles together with plants, plants, and more plants. B Klassy's interior design was inspired by every shop that Gerry worked in before opening this space with his Partner, Bobbie Jean. “He took the good and the bad and built the vision for what he wanted B Klassy to be,” Bobbie Jean explained. Gerry added: “I used my favorite colors and created a base with the old barbershop feel and blended with the modern side that I was exposed to while traveling the world. B Klassy is our outlet to express a higher quality of style and it serves as a platform to educate those who dream to reach a higher knowledge.”
Black and white vintage chairs line the walls, sourced from a local retailer, shipped from China. “We picked these vintage pieces to enhance the vintage, classic feel. The colors matched the marble floor and more modern elements. The chair is the heart of a barbershop, so it’s essential that they tie everything together.” The most important thing was finding chairs that are sturdy enough to hold all sizes of clients: “We have a lot of football players, so we need to be able to get them down to our height,” the couple laughed.

CLIENT EXPERIENCE “Every corner of the shop is designed for comfort,” Bobbie Jean and Gerry said. “We make sure it appeals to every sense – candles are on, chairs are comfortable, everything is clean, and we’re playing low jazz beats. These small elements are what create memories that will last in the client’s mind and then attract them back to our shop. Every visit is Klassy.”
SERVICES “We offer all men’s grooming services,” Bobbie Jean told me. “This includes haircuts, haircare, hairstyling, scalp massages, and scalp treatments. We also do full men's facial grooming, beard cuts and beard scrubs, straight razor shaves, and waxing." As soon as you come in, our barber floor consists of four chairs that are placed strategically in the center of the studio to create a sense of community between barbers and clients.” The power duo believe that teamwork makes the dream work: “That’s why we keep all the barbers in the same space.” Treatments like hot towel shaves, massages, and waxing exist in their own area. Bobbie Jean said: “They’re nestled to the side with small waiting areas
to create a little relaxation hub with comfy chairs. Everything is pinpointed towards the services. I first did this service when working from home and now we have this incredible vast space – it’s amazing. The rooms are remodeled to feel like suites that are safe and cool for guys to chill and get their hair pigmented.”

Bobbie Jean added a homely feel, enhancing the client experience by making sure that they felt welcome as soon as they step through the B Klassy doors. “I like to keep a super clean space where people feel at rest with a good cup of local Johnson Coffee in hand! Our client brings us coffee from Colombia, and it's what we serve our clients.” Gerry has always love antiquing – “he’s an old man at heart,” Bobbie Jean laughed – and so they put a lot of barber antiques into the shop. Gerry said: “I incorporated gifts and trinkets that I got on my travels, which really sets it apart.”

SUMMERJOY SCOTT, ALSO KNOWN AS SUMMER J, IS A CHAMPION FOR EMPOWERING MEN TO LOOK AFTER THEIR MENTAL HEALTH AND TALK ABOUT HOW THEY FEEL. HER CHAIR IS HER CLIENT’S SAFE SPACE – AND THE POWER OF A POSITIVE BARBERCLIENT RELATIONSHIP GOES WAY BEYOND THE CHAIR. Summer J has been a barber for 10 years now, and after taking a small hiatus around 2022, she plans to never leave the industry that she has come to adore. Summer J thrives in executing practical skills – from fades to flattops – but is in her element when it comes to providing behindthe-chair support for the people who visit her. She calls this mindset and ethos, The Barber Code. “It is about integrity, communication, transparency, and serving others,” she said. “When I’m working, I’ll ask my guys, ‘What is your code? What do you live by?’ And I’m not talking about their bro code! I empower them to think about what matters to them and to enact that in everyday life.
