In the last 15 years we have travelled to more than 40 countries. With our mountain bikes or snowboards, in search of the best trails and the most stunning powder runs – for magazines and photo shoots, with professional photographers.

After an avalanche accident while shooting a snowboard video in 1999, former freeride pro Holger Feist came up with the idea of a backpack with integrated back protector. The incident did not involve burial and did not have serious consequences.

Holger did, however, injure his back as a result of the avalanche shovel in his backpack when he crashed in a couloir.

The concept of a back protector also seemed to make sense for mountain biking, particularly as the ergonomics of the bike packs at the time left much to be desired. “Like a football on your back!” is how Holger summarised it in 2000 after a three-week bike expedition through Tibet, to Mount Everest Base Camp. So we started to tinker, sew and experiment, until the first functioning backpack prototype was finally initiated in 2003, on the trails of La Paz. But an entirely different problem emerged in Bolivia, one for which a sensible solution was not yet available on the market: the bike that had been carefully packed in a box, came off the baggage carousel at La Paz

Fortunately everything was still there, but this was obviously a reason for developing a sophisticated bike travel bag, as well.

Right from the start, the focus was on maximum functionality and quality so as to ensure that worrying about gear was going to be a thing of the past once and for all.

Both products were initially produced only for our own travels and for friends who requested them. Until one day, we had a phone call from a friend and long-term travel companion, Bernd Stucke from Hong Kong. He had taken his bike for a service at the legendary “Flying Ball” bike shop in one of the very first bike bags. Bike mastermind and shop owner Mr Lee was so impressed by this bike travel bag that he immediately ordered 50 bags. And that was to be our first “real” customer.

Every product reflects our passion for our sport and our passion for what we do. As a result, EVOC products are always a little more than simply pieces of equipment.

It’s mid-December when my phone rings and EVOC Marketing Manager Jan Sallawitz asks if I would like to travel to Vietnam in January for a photo shoot. I’m speechless. Me, in Vietnam, as a model? But then again, opportunities like this don’t come along often! I agree spontaneously, without knowing what to expect.

On 9th of January we touch down in Saigon. Holger Feist, product manager at EVOC, picks us up from the airport and immediately starts discussing the first photo locations with photographer Baschi Bender. I’m still stoked from all the new impressions, so I just let them talk while I watch in astonishment the daredevil manoeuvres of the scooter drivers in the city traffic. A few hours later I find myself amidst this chaotic throng of scooters and cars – with my bike. Next to the Ben Thành market, one of the largest squares in Saigon, is a huge roundabout – the major traffic junction in this part the city. And here I am, in the middle of the street, surrounded by honking horns and exhaust fumes,

trying to move as little as possible. Meanwhile Baschi – looking fairly relaxed on the traffic island in the middle of the roundabout – is taking photo after photo.

I’m glad when we leave the madness behind and enter the comparatively quiet market. Foreign smells crawl up my nose in the narrow streets, and I will always remember the crazy market stalls and colourful clothes. Then Holger grabs my arm and says conspiratorially: “And now we’re going to have some Pho.” “Pho? What on earth is Pho?” I think to myself, but Holger is already ordering. Nodding and smiling kindly, the small Vietnamese woman behind the counter hands over a bowl of soup and noodles to me. Hm, I usually follow a simple dietary rule that says “Don’t eat what you don’t know”, but Holger manages to convince me that in Vietnam “no Pho” means the same as “no breakfast”, and I start tucking in.

Thoroughly invigorated, we set off to the countryside where we will spend the next couple of days. Trails, vast nature and secluded beaches – that is so much more my taste! I look forward to exploring the area on the jungle trails with my bike and cycling through small villages. With that in mind, I leave behind Saigon and fall asleep while Baschi and Holger are still discussing camera angles and light conditions.

CC-LINE The perfect backpack is ergonomically adapted in such a way that you hardly feel it on your back. You almost forget that you’re wearing one while riding your bike. And this is precisely what we have focused on in the development of the LITE PERFORMANCE BACKPACKS. “The secret of such a backpack is its (low) weight on the one hand, and its ergonomic adaption to the wearer’s body on the other. The outer material of our new CC backpacks, innovative N 100D/ Nano Box Ripstop PU Coated, excels in lightweight characteristics and boasts outstanding abrasion resistance.

Even more complicated than searching for the perfect material is the ergonomic adjustment of the backpack’s fit. Everyone’s body is unique, just like a fingerprint. As a result, the carrying system adapts to the individual anatomy of the wearer. In the development stage, we paid particular attention to the direct contact surfaces between the pack and the back, namely the shoulder straps and the back panel.

our new BRACE LINK system makes for infinite adjustment to the wearer’s individual shoulder width. Air channels in the shoulder straps enable maximum breathability. Both characteristics considerably enhance the carrying comfort.

We’ve optimised our AIR PAD SYSTEM such that it provides maximum ventilation of the back and ensures perfect load distribution. Strategically positioned pads allow for optimal distribution of weight across the entire back area.

In addition, we have reduced the contact areas to the back, and have used a quick-drying 3D AIRMESH material.

This allows air to circulate freely and prevents moisture build-up from sweating, making for balanced temperature control between back and backpack.

The new CC line therefore stands for perfect “Climate Control”.

BIKE STAND Eight years ago the BIKE TRAVEL BAG marked the beginning of the EVOC story, and EVOC has been pioneering the BIKE TRAVEL segment ever since. The 2017 innovation is the BIKE STAND, a transportation aid that can be used with our BIKE TRAVEL BAGS. With a range of adjustment options, it allows for mounting of all conventional bike types. Easy to assemble, the BIKE STAND reduces packing time of the bike and provides for more safety while travelling.

LITESHIELD SYSTEM The core component of the protector backpack system is the extra-wide, ergonomically shaped 01 neoprene hip belt with Velcro fastening and a large heavy-duty buckle. This system transfers the main load onto the hips, namely right to the body’s centre of gravity. At the same time, the ergonomically cut shoulder straps keep the

AIR FLOW CONTACT SYSTEM The requirement here is to transfer loads to the body’s centre of gravity such that they become neutral, while at the same time minimising the contact areas with the back.

We solve this contradiction by means of a back component where all ventilation components such as large ventilation

channels 01 and specially grooved and perforated EVA pads 02 behind mesh material have practically been moved to the inside.

This ensures that the pack fits close to the back and simultaneously provides optimised back ventilation.

AIRO FLEX is an extremely sturdy material that is both permeable and flexible.

We use it for our top-quality hip belts

to ensure optimum load transfer to the hips, with simultaneous maximum ventilation – for utmost carrying comfort.

The BRACE LINK adjusts the shoulder belts perfectly to the width of the athletes shoulders. This automatically adjustment endorse the load transfer to the body’s centre of gravity, while at

the same time the contact areas with back and shoulders are minimized.

Even wearing a neck brace is possbile through the BRACE LINK.

The VENTI FLAP system enables folding the back piece away for maximum ventilation, and thus enhanced carrying comfort. During longer ascents, you can increase the distance to your back by opening the adjustment strap to

boost air circulation. During descents you can reduce the distance again, which then ensures that the backpack sits firmly and is completely neutral to movement.

01 REINFORCED FORK MOUNT The fork is mounted to the rigid foam block with two additional buckles and a pad; the fork ends are additionally protected by a plastic plate in the bottom.

02 2 SEPARATE WHEEL COMPARTMENTS ON THE SIDES The stabiliser rods over the tyres and rims distribute pressure from the exterior over the side areas, so spokes or brake discs aren’t bent. Several plastic plates prevent the axles of the wheels from protruding through the material.

03 EXTRA WIDE UNDERCARRIAGE WITH ADDITIONAL HANDLE The impact-protected undercarriage with the smoothly running, soft skate wheels ensures a safe transport and prevents tilting. The additional handle enables you to lift the bag securely when loading it.

“First South Africa always meant to me vast landscapes, wild animals and long beaches. But there’s so much to see and do besides the wild and technical trails in the open savannah. “Freeride runs like this one are great because you can actually surf them.

Steep terrain and loose surfaces give me the chance to carve my lines in the dirt, which is something I can normally only do with my snowboard in powder snow. Release the brakes and then push the rear of the bike from one side to the other – awesome! Designed for ambitious use, our NEUTRALITE SYSTEM is a carrying system for high-capacity backpacks, which allows even heavy loads to be carried comfortably over longer periods, in a way that is neutral to movement. Back adaptation and load transfer are managed via malleable stabilising elements that transfer the weight onto a specially adapted hip belt 01 via segmented and strategically positioned padded elements.

This means that the weight is absorbed

as neutrally as possible at the body’s centre of gravity, via the hips.

Particularly wide, well-padded and ergonomically shaped shoulder straps 02 with a wide neck cut-out help keep the backpack in place at all times and prevent it from slipping, even during action-loaded manoeuvres. At the same time, useful gaps and aeration channels ensure optimal ventilation across the entire back.

AIR CIRCULATION AIR CIRCULATION is used in all our backpacks, as it ensures optimum ventilation while preventing excessive cooling down of the sensitive kidney area, even during extremely high-strain activities or intensive perspiration.

Constant, free air circulation is guaranteed as a result of the vertical air channel.
