Boost Your Mood With Cacao by: Gabriela Moy Americans consume 3 billion pounds of chocolate a year. So we ask ourselves if we are eating the good kind? The most beneficial substances of chocolate are found in cacao solids. From all the choices of chocolate that we encounter when trying to buy that perfect chocolate bar, dark chocolate is the healthiest choice. Out of white, milk and dark chocolate the latter one contains the most amount of cacao solids, which then contains the most amount of beneficial substances. Today, we talk about these different substances that help boost your mood. Anandamide, also known as the bliss molecule is found at very high concentrations in cocoa. Cocoa is actually the main food source of this compound. Anandamide is known to enhance our moods since it creates a feeling of euphoria.

Cacao is one of the few food sources that contain a mood-enhancing compound called phenylethylamine (PEA). This chemical triggers the release of endorphins and pleasurable opium-like neurochemicals. PEA is sometimes referred to as the love drug because it releases the chemicals that are also released when we fall in love. A study conducted showed that eating chocolate had a similar effect on the heart rate and brain as kissing does. Another compound found in chocolate is referred to as the feel good brain chemical. Serotonin is derived from the amino acid tryptophan which is a neurotransmitter of happiness and positive mood. Eating chocolate can boost the brain levels of calming hormones and restore feelings of well-being, especially when women PMS since their serotonin levels drop dramatically. When more serotonin circulates in the brain, more antioxidants are released making you feel better overall. Magnesium is a mineral that should be incorporated into everyone’s diet as it is beneficial for one’s overall health and mood. Cacao also contains a high concentration of magnesium. This mineral can suppress the release of the stress hormone known as cortisol. By doing this, magnesium is able to reduce levels of stress which makes you more relaxed and improves mood. Chocolate can therefore improve one’s depression and anxiety symptoms in order to make us feel more content. There are so many other substances found in cacao that can improve one’s overall health and we all know that when we are healthy we are also more pleased with ourselves. Chocolate contains flavonoids which improve blood flow to the brain enhancing our memory and learning capacity. Cacao also contains over 700 compounds of antioxidants which is more that in other common superfoods. These antioxidants help improve blood circulation, which then reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and bad cholesterol. Be sure to incorporate raw cacao in the form of beans or nibs into your diet. It is so easy to just mix into a smoothie or even eat on its own. Finally, it is recommended to eat chocolate with 70% or more cacao in order to benefit from all of the healthy chemicals and minerals found in chocolate.

Hemp for Growing Kids By: Gabriela Moy On a given day, only 30% of 1-year olds are eating vegetables. In America, bad eating habits in children start earlier than we think. By the time a child stops breastfeeding, normal foods are being incorporated into their diets and it’s usually junk food. So how can we make sure that our children are receiving a nutritional and well balanced diet? Hemp seeds provide our bodies with substantial nutritional benefits making them a perfect source of protein, minerals and essential fatty acids for our growing kids. Hemp seeds can be incorporated in their diets as early as a few months and it’s extremely easy to do so. Rapidly growing kids need to consume foods that will keep up with their developing bodies. Proteins are an important part of this process as they foster correct development and growth. Hemp-based products provide complete amounts of protein in just a serving of 3 tablespoons. With this serving, a growing child will ingest 11 grams of protein which is almost 100% of all the protein a child needs per day. From the same serving of 3 tablespoons of hemp seeds, children will receive 3 milligrams of Iron and 3.5 milligrams of Zinc.

These two minerals are vital for a growing child. Iron aids the mobility of oxygen through the body promoting a healthy brain development; a child needs about 7 milligrams of Iron a day. For proper growth and development as well as a healthy immune system, a daily intake of Zinc is essential. Three tablespoons of hemp seeds provides more than enough Zinc for a child’s growing body. Along with these two minerals, hemp seeds are also rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper and phosphorus. All of these are important for strong bones, heart health and proper development. Hemp seeds have a complete amino acid profile, providing the body with the 8 essential fatty acids (EFA’s). This superfood contains the perfect ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3, which is essential for digestion. These EFA’s can reduce inflammation, lower the risk of heart disease and support brain health. Proving your children with this amino acid profile is one of the healthiest things you can do for them. There are many ways that any child can benefit from a daily intake of hemp-based products. However, these products are especially beneficial for kids that suffer from nut allergies or sensitive to gluten. It is found that kids normally allergic to nuts are not allergic to hemp seeds. Also, hemp seeds are gluten free so these products are easy on sensitive stomachs. To get the most out of this superfood, look for hemp seeds that are grown naturally without pesticides or herbicides.

Hemp vs Whey Protein Plant-based vs. Dairy-based Whey protein is created via a byproduct of cheese production. During the process, lactose is carefully filtered out. However, the product cannot be advertised as dairyfree in case of any remnants of lactose. Hemp protein, on the other hand, is a plantbased protein. Though whey protein is also easy to digest, hemp protein is more so because it lacks whey protein’s dairy base, which is harder for the human stomach to process. Further, it is safe for vegans and vegetarians, while whey protein is only safe for vegetarians because of the risk of residual dairy. Additives vs. No Additives In order to obtain whey powder, hexane is used to separate the powder from lactose. This additive is a reason that some stray away from whey protein because it is not completely natural. Additionally, hemp protein is obtained via the de-fatted remains of hemp cake, which is ground into a powder. There are no additives involved in the process of creating the protein powder. Hemp’s more natural attributes offer more assistance with digestion while also keeping the body leaner. It also digests slowly, which is great for after a workout.

Health Effects Whey protein can have a 99% protein content. Hemp has a 50% protein content and is regarded highly because it is so easily digestible. Hemp protein also boasts all 20 amino acids, including the 9 essential amino acids. It is the strongest plant-based source of protein and offers a multitude of other health benefits, like heart health and prevention of osteoporosis. Whey does contain saturated fats as well as cholesterol, while hemp protein only has unsaturated fats. Environmental Effects Beyond nutritional value, the fact that hemp protein is derived from plant farming rather than dairy farming suggests its future sustainability. Plant farming is by definition more renewable and more environmentally friendly. If you’re looking for a protein powder that is friendly to your body, your wallet, and the environment, then hemp is the choice for you! Both hemp and whey proteins are high in protein content, but hemp is chemical free and offers a multitude of other benefits that whey does not, like the heart, organ, and digestive health.
