A LETTER FRON THE EDITORS

Innovation meets Equality

DiAnna Drysdale Editor at Large

Cliff tells the story of a meeting that he and his partner, Don Henderson, had with the General Manager of the Ritz Carlton on Key Biscayne 18 years ago when the company was in its infancy. He asked them if they wanted to be employees or independent contractors. In choosing the latter, it gave them the chance to expand operations. So was born the multitude of smiles and laughs around innovative ideas like the experience program, ladies retreats, touring camps, design concepts and social media expansion. The most impressive thing to me has been the time our growing family spends to introduce new ways to get people to join this wonderful lifestyle. I’m amused at how, wherever we are, Cliff wants to stop at the local club to check it out. I joke with him every time we pass a lonely tennis court in some far away place that he should manage it. It hurts him to see an empty tennis court.

Don and Cliff’s inclusion of people and ideas comes naturally. When my husband started this company, his vision was for everyone of all walks of life to benefit from the game that has brought him so much joy and success as a player and business man. He has been a strong advocate for equal opportunity for woman on the tour and within his company. In this issue we will highlight the strong and passionate women that have taken on key positions, along with the innovative ideas from the people of CDT. Our company is about lifestyle birth, and I am happy to say that it permeates the way the business is operated. It is a home full of innovation and some surprises, but mostly it’s a happy place.

A Pioneering Legacy International Tennis Hall of Fame legend Cliff Drysdale is synonymous with innovation within the sport of tennis. His legacy spans decades where he served as a vocal proponent of positive change and advancement within the industry. Cliff’s radical shapeshifting is evident across the history of the last 50 years in tennis. From pioneering the widespread use of the two-handed backhand, serving as the founder and first president of the ATP, leading the Wimbledon boycott of 1973, speaking out against apartheid in his native South Africa and in support of his legendary friend Arthur Ashe, and continued vocal support of advancements within the sport, Cliff embodies the title of “The Voice of Tennis” far beyond his career as an ESPN analyst.

4

The Drysdale legacy lives on within our tennis management company. We strive to be at the forefront of the industry through our numerous initiatives including our employee training and job placement programs, the development and activation of innovative ways to bring more new players to the game, and in advocating a cultural shift with tennis being portrayed as a fun, fit lifestyle activity for the whole family and less about an intimidating competitive sport. This issue of EXPERIENCE abounds with ways tennis leads the way, and I hope it inspires you to challenge yourself to be the change and influence positive growth both within yourself and the world around you.

Paving the Way My tennis adventure began at the age of 10. Years of training and traveling to tournaments culminated in a wonderful college career. That college career has led to an exciting start to my professional career in the industry. Fortunately for me, I have grown up in a generation where it is normal for women to compete in the sport from an early age, earn scholarships and equal prize money, and work in an industry that consistently leads the way.

Katie Steck Managing Editor

Women, myself included, will be forever indebted to the iconic voices of Billie Jean King, Martina Navritlova, and the Williams sisters who continue to pave the way forward for women on and off the court. The dominance of these women is undeniable, but the platform afforded to these women is no different than the one I or you have been provided. That platform is the sport itself. Immediately after graduation, I entered the tennis profession as a coach to individuals of all ages. While teaching proper technique, footwork, and strategy at resorts, clubs, and school

campuses across the country, I routinely found myself to be the only female professional on the court. This did not bother me. Rather, it inspired and motivated me to push my own limits and hold myself accountable for my performance. My position as a tennis professional was so much more than ramping up someone’s serve or adding topspin to their forehands. It was an opportunity to prove that I--that women--not only deserve, but belong on court alongside our male counterparts. Cliff Drysdale Tennis provided me, and several other amazing women, the opportunity to be an example for future generations of female players and coaches. I can only hope that I have begun to capitalize on that responsibility afforded to me. As far as our sport has come, there is still ample opportunity for growth. I am confident that tennis and the community it inspires will continue to lead the way for generations to come.

Bend. Maybe even break. Throughout this January edition of EXPERIENCE Magazine, you will read about individuals and organizations that have taken the lead to make tennis a greater sport on and off the court. When discussing innovation in tennis, one key experience has significantly impacted my thought process going forward. A few years ago, the NCAA and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association made a controversial decision to play all singles and doubles matches with no-ad scoring. This was met with severe pushback, from players, coaches and fans alike. I personally hated the change before I even gave it a chance. Heading into the 2018 season, most involved in college tennis, including myself, would tell you that the rule change has been an overwhelming success. Matches are shorter, but arguably more exciting than ever. Players are transitioning from college to the pros at an even higher success rate.

Looking at the attempts at change pro tennis made in 2017; each one was given little chance of success. Laver Cup was hailed by most as “just an exhibition”. It ended up being, in my opinion, one of the most significant events of the year. The final match between Nick Kyrgios and Roger Federer was incredible, with Kyrgios admitting it was one of the toughest losses of his career. Most recently, the ATP Next Gen finals trialled a handful of outside the box innovations; shorter sets, coaching during changeovers and hawkeye making all line calls. When it was announced, tennis fans, perhaps the most stubborn of any sport, immediately detracted its worth. Players said afterward that they enjoyed many of the new rules.

Joey Hanf Managing Editor

You don’t have to agree with everyone or everything in this magazine; in fact I encourage you not to. But when something new or different is presented, don’t be afraid to bend. Or maybe even break. Experience Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

CLIFF NOTES by Cliff Drysdale

Tennis, Take a Bow.

T

ennis is gender and race neutral. Wheelchair tennis is showcased at Grand Slam events. Where men and woman play together professionally, the events, including all 4 Majors, offer equal prize money. The result is that tennis is by far the most lucrative traditional woman’s sports activity. Visit any list of highest paid female athletes and the vast majority are tennis players. In fact no other sport even comes close. There are no differences in court size, equipment, or scoring that gives woman tennis players an edge like golf for example does with shorter distances. The only defining differences are abilities. Every Major has a mixed doubles prize money event. Both genders on the same court is unique in major sport. Decades ago a trans-gender male doctor was welcomed on the woman’s tour after a sex change operation. Repeat, decades ago. Billie Jean King is rightfully given credit for leading the equality movement but the stage was set by the character of the sport and its interactivity. Tennis is played by men and woman in equal numbers and any promoter or tennis director who emphasizes one gender over another is missing half of his or her audience. Ours is the sport not only of a lifetime but inclusive of the whole family. This is why, in the big picture and long view, the future is a bright one as the sport grows with its fundamental unique qualities. You have to add the health components and the fact that it is just plain fun to play, but these other less appreciated advantages may sound like a political campaign, but are nevertheless very real.

EXERCISE RECOVERY METHODS GO

High Tech BY RICK LIMPERT: @RICKROSWELL

Recovery from exercise is just as important as pushing yourself in the gym or preparing for a workout.

Fact Exercise hurts your body and gives a reaction. When you go for a run, lift weights, or play tennis, any discomfort is like a wake up call to the body, telling it that it needs to be equipped to deal with the situation.

Fact Lack of recovery can lead to overtraining and injury.

Fact Without proper recovery, you can be lethargic, unable to sleep, irritable and lose the motivation to exercise. What’s more, the disruption it causes to your body’s systems can actually lead to weight gain - ironic.

Experience Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

In the last five years, technology has stepped up to the plate to aid in post-workout recovery for all types of athletes. Elite athletes, weekend warriors and those just startng an exercise regime can benefit from assorted recovery aids, devices and tools. “Whether they have just completed a match, clinic or participate in one of our retreats, we make sure recovery is part of the equation,” explains Bryce Cunningham, Director of Tennis at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. “Sure we stress gettng proper rest, hydrating, stretching and ice baths, but now there are other tools available.” From infrared lights, to sleep enhancement tech, to devices for specific body parts, there is no excuse for not getting proper recovery after exercise. Let’s take a look.

1) BedJet

BedJet is the world’s first rapid cooling, warming and climate control system made just for your bed. BedJet helps you sleep cooler, dryer and better, and solves the age-old problem of couples disagreeing on comfortable sleep temperature. BedJet is perfect for athletes who need deeper, better sleep for recovery after intensive training. The New York Jets are on board with BedJet, as are amateur athletes all over the world. In a study conducted by the NBA, athletes who received enough sleep experienced 60% fewer injuries and 54% less sickness. BedJet hooks right underneath your mattress, and it’s easy to install. Both doctors and athletic trainers are now promoting sleep to be just as important to our health as exercise and nutrition. www.bedjet.com

3) Arctic Ease

5) The Original Worm

A $16 way to help recover after a workout or competition is a cool-to-the-touch cloth that relieves inflammation almost immediately using cold compression therapy—no need for refrigeration or messy ice packs. Arctic Ease can be rehydrated with just a few drops of water and reused within two to three hours.

This Original Worm is a portable and multi-tasking roller that comes in two sizes and fits in any backpack, bag or purse. Overuse of the foot (usually from a lot of walking/standing or from doing athletics/running) can strain and/or lead to microtrauma of the plantar fascia. When this occurs, the fascia can become irritated and/or inflamed. A roller that combines the benefits of therapy balls with a fitness massage roller. The Worm’s specially designed (4) neoprene encased, solid rubber massage balls target 4x the body’s surface area. These massage roller balls will provide trigger point release to combat stiffness, pain and stress in muscles and joints. Prices start at just $24.

Keys’ Message Heard On & Off the Court. Madison Keys reached the final of the 2017 U.S. Open at just 22 years old. Well known as one of the rising stars of tennis, Keys’ has spent significant time off court as an anti-bullying ambassador with FearlesslyGIRL, an organization dedicated to creating a “Kinder Girl World” in schools and communities across North America.

M

adison Keys regularly strikes down 120 mph serves. Statistics from the 2017 U.S. Open showed that she hits her groundstrokes, on average, harder than even a large portion of her male counterparts. She’s an imposing and intimidating figure on the other side of the net. However, like many athletes, Keys has been forced to deal with online abuse in the form of social media. Tennis, the second most bet on sport in the world, sees it’s athletes mocked, attacked and abused from those behind a screen on a disturbingly regular basis. Keys, who is biracial, has been the victim of such abuse all too often. She never shied from speaking out on the issue, often posting screenshots of the derogatory remarks on Instagram and Twitter. “I’ve been very outspoken about the pressure that social media has put on me in the past, let alone what it can do to a much younger and inexperienced person,” Keys said before a Miami summit in April. She has mentioned that although she now knows how to block out the hate, earlier in her career the abuse would get to her easier. Inspired to make a positive impact on the world, Keys joined forces with FearlesslyGIRL, a North American leadership organization focused on empowering young women. As an ambassador, Keys hosts anti-bullying summits at schools and cities

throughout the year to help teenage girls improve self-esteem, manage friendships and deal with bullies. By raising awareness and opening up on her own struggles, Keys hopes that young girls will be more willing to speak up. FearlesslyGIRL aims to end girl against girl bullying. The issue resonates with Keys not only due to the online abuse she faces, but also because she has seen the effect bullying has had on her two high school age sisters. Keys told the USTA (United States Tennis Association) that it’s okay to be close friends even with your opponents. After falling to fellow American Sloane Stephens in the final of the 2017 U.S. Open, Keys was joined by her close friend Stephens in her chair after the match and during the trophy ceremony. The two joked, embraced and showed that being tough competitors doesn’t mean you can’t be nice. “We have known each other for so long and we’ve been through so much that we wanted to share that moment with each other,” Keys said in her press conference following the match. “I’m hopeful that we’ll have many more slam finals against each other.”

“Creating a Kinder Girl World... FEARLESSLY!” Inspired to make a positive impact on the world, Keys joined forces with FearlesslyGIRL, a North American leadership organization focused on empowering young women.

Moments and situations like the U.S. Open final show that Keys not only raises awareness for an issue she cares about, but leads by example and serves as a role model for young girls everywhere. Experience Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

K

eys celebrated the official launch of FearlesslyGIRL by co-hosting the largest ever anti-bullying assembly on November 17th, 2017. Live streamed worldwide, Keys joined founder Kate Whitfield and other athletes and celebrity guests to discuss overcoming their fears and how to create a kinder girl world across the country. Held in her hometown of Rock Island, Illinois, Keys spoke about her own experiences during her high school years, while listening to others describe their challenges. “A huge part of what I do is connect with fans on social media,” Keys said in front of a live-audience and live-stream worldwide. “It’s a great tool. I’ve had to find a balance of enjoying the good, while blocking out the bad.” Keys mentioned that while she has gotten used to playing in front of big crowds, things like speaking in public still make her very nervous. Giving advice to girls around the world, she said that you have to embrace pressure situations, no matter how big the stage. The launch event also featured a pro-am and kids clinic with Keys, ATP professional Bjorn Fratangelo and other tennis celebrities. Starting close to home, Keys told the USTA that her mission for the organization is to go global, but that it’s important to make a difference locally before expanding. “This is where I started,” she said. “It’s a great place to grow anything and we’ll slowly move FearlesslyGIRL from this event.”

Keys has emerged as one of many influential athletes who are using their platform in the modern digital world to make a difference. Tennis has been blessed by its fair share of trailblazers; from Billie Jean King to Arthur Ashe, the sport consistently leads the national conversation. Look for Keys to continue making a powerful statement on and off the tennis court.

“A huge part of what I do is connect with fans on social media,” Keys said in front of a live-audience and live-stream worldwide. “It’s a great tool. I’ve had to find a balance of enjoying the good, while blocking out the bad.”

With the opening of the Tyler Athletic and Swim Club in May of 2017, so came the opportunity to host another $80K women’s event. The inaugural RBC Pro Challenge kicked off on October 29th and ran through to November 5th. Featuring one of the strongest fields in tournament history, players competed for rankings points, prize money, and perhaps most importantly, an Australian Open Wild Card. With a staggering 20 American women in the main draw, this year’s tournament featured both rising stars of women’s tennis, former Junior World No. 1’s and three NCAA Singles Champions. 22

ompetitors on the USTA Pro Circuit travel year round to different locations and events, some more appealing to the players than others. There was no doubt that Tyler was one of the best stops of the year, with many of the players sticking around a few extra days than normal to take advantage of the great facilities at the Tyler Athletic and Swim Club. This professional environment with great support from the Tyler community gave the players extra motivation on court. “It’s fun to be in new cities like Tyler that are excited about tennis,” former NCAA champion Nicole Gibbs said. “It’s great to see so many people here supporting the event.” Crowds grew as the tournament reached its final stages. Saturday and Sunday saw over 1000 spectators witness high level tennis. All four semifinalists in the singles draw were American, and three out of the four doubles finalists hailed from the U.S. Taylor Townsend and Jessica Pegula took the doubles title over Jamie Loeb and Rebecca Peterson. In Sunday’s singles final, Kristie Ahn defeated Danielle Collins to win the title and take the lead in the Australian Open Wild Card Challenge. Ahn will be playing in her first Australian Open main draw in January. “I would love to come back every year,” Ahn said of the tournament. “It’s not only that the facilities are top notch, it’s also the people here; they’ve been nothing short of amazing. All the players have been talking all week about how awesome of an event this is, especially as a first year (tournament).”

he tireless work of all tournament volunteers, ball persons, staff and the incredible support by our tournament sponsors allowed the RBC Pro Challenge to be a first class event on the USTA Pro Circuit.

“The goal was to bring a great tournament to Tyler so that it could be used to excite the community to watch and play tennis at all clubs,” Tournament Promoter Scott McCulloch said. “Tennis has always been a part of the lifestyle in Tyler and Texas as a whole. We could not have been happier with the result.” Tournament proceeds benefitted ACEing Autism, a national non-profit that connects children on the autistic spectrum to tennis. The funds from the event will go towards a new program to be held at the Tyler Athletic and Swim Club. An ACEing Autism clinic was hosted by Founder Richard Spurling and a great team of volunteers. With great turnout and reception, the program in Tyler is off to a great start and will officially begin in early 2018. Every major local media outlet covered the RBC Pro Challenge, highlighted by East Texas sports radio leader Bill Coates hosting a two hour show live from the tournament. With coverage and awareness growing, the RBC Pro Challenge promises to be even bigger and better in 2018. Tournament supervisor Brian Earley, who is also the U.S. Open Referee, said the tournament exceeded expectations as a first year event. “If you look around I think you can see that all of the boxes have been checked,” Earley said. “I think this tournament will be here for a long time.”

BY ELIO LATELLA

“Toughness in Tennis”

Tennis might not be the first sport that comes to mind when thinking about how “tough” an athlete can be. However, it is one of the most underrated sports when it comes to understanding the mentally demanding challenges players face. Sports like rugby union or American football are typically the first sports that come to mind among sports fans when thinking of “tough” athletes. Tennis is one of the few sports where the main physical factors of endurance, agility, strength, and power must all combine with mental toughness to succeed. Although every sporting athlete must battle with nerves, fatigue, and over come adversity, tennis players do not have the luxury to simply pass the ball or let a teammate take the lead. “There are no bad days” my coaches would say, meaning you and you alone had to figure out the problems for that particular match... or lose.

her is “savasana” - the resting pose. She can contort her body into positions of flexibility that a tennis player can only dream of, but quieting the mind’s chatter was considered the hardest pose to execute. Whether it be anxiety over our kids’ future, financial pursuits or simply our own happiness, we all face this mental disciplinary challenge on a daily basis. Mental toughness applies to all avenues of life. Back to tennis. All sports have mental elements, but tennis is unique in that it places such pressure on technical skill along with the physical and mental challenges associated with good decision-making. Every player struggles with various degrees of mental stress

on court; however, there are a few main scenarios I find myself repeating to players of all ages and abilities which I hope can provide you with insight toward improving yourself as a player:

3 Simple Steps: 1. Slow Down 2. See Yourself Objectively 3. Trust Yourself

You might be wondering, “well, being tough is great, but I just want to hit the ball!” Mental toughness is where a genuine difference can be made in all our games. With some focus, you can make vast improvements in your game, especially at an intermediate or club level. How you ask? Well, it can be as simple as taking a deep breath before every serve. Having trouble with double faults on big points? Slow it down. Many amateur players rush their routines and thus do not play strategically. If you are a player who finds the same problems reoccurring in your matches, then you my friend, have the ability to improve your game through mental toughness. Karson McGinley, yoga instructor and founder of Happy-U Namaste Yoga in San Diego, CA, says the hardest pose for 26

Slow down.

You can only control what you can control, right? Cliché, but it’s true. Often players walk up to serve, but have no idea where they want to put the ball, why they would choose that serve, and no idea what shot to expect to hit next etc. The game may continue, but the plan stays the same; understand yourself and then worry about what the other player is doing. Take time on your serve to think which side is your opponent’s weaker wing. Ask yourself how you can move them off the court to create open space. Will you serve wide to their killer forehand where you’re losing most points? No. Take away their strengths. Breathe, do not rush, just think. Have a plan, and be tough!

See Yourself Objectively.

An objective viewpoint is important to remain calm on court. Tennis can be frustrating when your performance does not live up to your expectations. Helping yourself understand why you are winning or losing points is important to, in fact, win more points! If you lose the first set 6-0, “no worries” as my old coach used to say. Just know why you lost it, and figure out the match from there. It is okay, a match is long. “If you don’t know, now you can worry.”

a. Simple ideas are “I need to hit deeper to limit their ability to hit winners” if you’re getting blitzed.

b. “They’re running me ragged.” Play deep and to the middle to take away their angles and see if they over hit.

c. “I just can’t hit a single ball in!” Focus on your feet, put in a higher intensity to be ready for every ball and find your rhythm. Watch the ball spin as it comes off the court to maintain good racquet contact.

Trust Yourself.

In tough situations you need to see yourself doing what you plan to do. As the saying goes, “If you think you can, you’re right. Think you can’t, you’re right again.” The best way to address nervousness on court is to visualize your next shot before you hit it after a big, deep breath. You will eventually find autonomy in play during the rally where you do not think, you just do. Practicing this off the court is important if you struggle in clutch situations – be mentally tough.

“Mental toughness

applies to all avenues of life, and that is a beautiful thing upon which to place importance.”

Tennis is hard! Tennis is a sport that leads its field in pushing players to find solutions to problems in real-time. The hard part is that there is no substitution, no passing the ball to your teammate, and no halftime. It is hard, it is nonstop, and it is on you, and you alone, to close-out a match even if you’re up 6-0 5-0. In the semifinal of the NCAA national tournament, I played next to my teammate who was up a set and had 40-0 to win the match, clinch the day, and put the team through to the final. We were all on court for another hour and a half. He lost to a great fighter of a player, but my team won the day. It happens to even the most experienced players even at the pro level. It’s not over until it’s over. You can always lose, but with your best efforts, you give yourself the chance to win. I hope you get the result you want!

Keep fighting, fighters.

HIGH TECH FOOD AND DRINK TO

Fuel Your Body

1)

BY RICK LIMPERT: @RICKROSWELL

Technology has come to the food and drink we ingest before we take the court, field of play or hit the track. The old saying, “You are what you eat” may never be more true. If you take fitness seriously or compete/train in more than one activity or sport, the food you consume before, during and after your workout is also critical for maximizing your goals. Check out some new food and drinks to power your body and help you reach your goals.

1) Pickle & Watermelon Juice Don’t laugh, but the juices of pickles and watermelons have a variety of benefits for athletes of all levels. The Pickle Juice Company’s special pickle juice formula might be more effective than sports drinks at treating muscle cramps, confirming a longstanding assumption in the sports world. Football players, cyclists and triathletes have been sipping dill-flavored drinks for years, and now you can too. Tsamma Watermelon Juice actually hydrates the University of Alabama Football team. After learning of a study on watermelon juice, which was being led by the University’s Human Nutrition Department, the team decided to give it a try. Watermelon is the only food that provides a natural source of L-Citrulline, an amino acid that is a safe sports supplement, and each 12 oz. bottle of Tsamma Juice has 600 mg of this powerful nutrient. www.picklepower.com www.tsammajuice.com

2) ENERGYbits Cut back on your energy drinks, gels, bars and supplements. ENERGYbits are an alternative, nutritionally dense source of mental and physical energy that is all natural and causes no stomach distress. This plant-based fuel will supercharge your workouts, runs and athletic performance! ENERGYbits helps endurance, but also is a high protein snack that reduces hunger, cravings and the need for caffeine.

3)Country Archer Frontier Bars Meat based protein bars are more than the latest food trend. Not “jerky,” Country Archer bars are made to satisfy a healthy appetite. Packed with 20g of protein, these hand-crafted bars are made from grass fed beef, no hormone turkey and pork, non-GMO, very low sugar, gluten free and soy free.

4) VeganSmart For those that have to watch what types of food they eat, VeganSmart is a line of delicious, plant-based nutritional shake, with no dairy, eggs, soy, artificial sweeteners, flavors, colors, preservatives, cholesterol, acesulfame-K, MSG, and zero trans-fat. It is the perfect way to stay full and keep your energy up during a workout. With five different non-GMO plant based proteins, VeganSmart provides the essential amino acids for building and repairing tissue and muscle.

The USTA Launched Net Generation at the Arthur Ashe Kids Day during the 2017 U.S. Open

Net Generation grants provide equipment packages likes racquets, balls and nets to local schools and communities

Introducing the Net Generation USTA’s New Initiative Aims to Foster New Wave of American Tennis Stars By: Joey Hanf Serena Williams. John McEnroe. Chris Evert. Pete Sampras. The list of American tennis greats is nothing short of jaw dropping. With past stars plentiful, the United States Tennis Association(USTA) is looking for new ways to engage and inspire the next wave of tennis players in the United States. In the fall of 2017, the USTA officially announced the groundwork for a new initiative; Net Generation. Once dominated by just a few power nations, tennis has gone global. Players from around the world now have shown that you can compete at the highest level of the sport, regardless of where you are from. While American women have continued to enjoy major success, the men have struggled to reach the lofty standards set by their predecessors. The revolutionary new program, Net Generation, will provide American tennis with one unified youth brand for children to get into the sport, making it easier for children and their parents to learn about tennis and get into the game in schools, parks and tennis clubs across the country. “It is essential to implement the best infrastructure and environment for the current and future generation of kids,” said Katrina Adams, USTA President. “Net Generation will help further our commitment to encouraging healthy lifestyles and bringing more children into the game by reaching kids and parents in a dynamic and easier way than ever before.” 32

Experience Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

“It’s all about providing players the opportunity to enjoy tennis on their own terms.”

With more resources set to be rolled out in 2018, Net Generation serves to connect potential tennis players with schools, equipment and certified coaches amongst other things. The initiative is for children aged 5-18, and serves as a way to cater to the needs of the individual. In the past, players were often grouped into subdivisions with overarching goals. Now, the USTA is aiming to create individualized empowerment by focusing on play, building character and championing personal challenges. ‘It’s all about providing players the opportunity to enjoy tennis on their own terms.’ Cliff Drysdale Tennis has worked with the USTA to implement Net Generation programs at numerous locations across the nation. Elite CDT facilities and teaching professionals can now be easily connected to aspiring players. “We are very excited to partner with USTA on the Net Generation program,” said, Scott McCulloch, Vice President of Operations for Cliff Drysdale Management. “We are entering schools throughout the community to activate this program so that activity and lifestyle through tennis is provided and available to all kids.” In addition to working with schools and local communities, CDT partnered with the USTA to host a Net Generation clinic at the RBC Pro Challenge in Tyler, Texas. Professional players joined USTA and CDT coaches in a 90 minute session of fun that introduced tennis to a large group of children. Afterwards participants were able to watch top professionals compete at the Tyler Athletic and Swim Club, leaving them inspired to continue playing the sport. It won’t be long until the Net Generation is now; Cliff Drysdale Tennis is proud to partner with the USTA to further promote our mission of growing the game of tennis.

Industry PIONEERS Women Lead Tennis Innovation at Cliff Drysdale Management

BY KATHLEEN JAROSZEWSKI

T

ennis has been blessed to have so many trailblazers and influential voices in the sport over the years. It’s also undoubtedly the biggest and most successful women’s professional sport in the world, with eight out of the top ten highest paid female athletes competing in tennis. With equal prize money at all four major events as well as other various events around world, tennis has long been a sports pioneer. Cliff Drysdale Management has recognized the importance of building upon this success by leading the tennis management industry with a strong representation of women in both management and coaching roles. This starts with our talented, certified tennis professionals. We currently employ twenty-one female professionals, including five Directors of Tennis. In an industry predominantly led by men, our female directors have shown that they have the ability not only to match the efforts of their counterparts, but inspire a new generation of women to pursue a career in tennis.

INDUSTRY PIONEERS “Cliff Drysdale Tennis is a company with opportunities, which means you have the incentive for growth.” said Ximena Trujillo, who has been the Director of Tennis at Grove Isle Tennis Center in Miami, Florida since 2015. “At the same time, you have the support of a management team that encourages excellence.”

The United States Professional Tennis Association(USPTA) said that currently 19% of current certified teaching professionals in their registry are female. Women currently make up 25% of the current Cliff Drysdale Tennis teaching staff, with that number growing each year. Off the court, this progression is even more evident. Women makeup eight out of thirteen employees on the CDM corporate staff, including two in executive positions. “When I started out as a tennis pro fresh out of college with Cliff Drysdale Management in the company’s infancy, I never could have imagined that my role would evolve to where I am today” said Jamie Graham, Chief Financial Officer. “I am so thankful to be a part of such an innovative and progressive tennis company. One of my favorite aspects of my job is helping my fellow team members realize their true potential and follow their tennis dreams.”

“Our company’s culture is focused on supporting all of our team members to learn, grow, and excel” said Kimberly Arena, Vice President of Marketing and Sales. “As a result we have seen so many talented women (and men) rise through the ranks. Women today experience the kind of access to both business and sports opportunities that generations past never could have imagined, and the representation of women in Cliff Drysdale Management is a testament to that fact.”

As CDM continues it’s rapid growth, opportunities will become even greater for men and women equally to pursue and grow careers in tennis.

Tim

Smyczek The Comeback Trail

Photo: Chris Griffin, fivetoolcreative.com

Small Town Roots and Superior Sportsmanship

By: Joey Hanf Tim Smyczek is a 30 year old professional tennis player from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Ranked as high as no. 68 in the world, Smyczek has spent twelve years on tour, won seven ATP Challenger titles, and reached the third round of the ‘13 U.S. Open, where he was the last American male left in the singles draw. Standing at just 5’9, Smyczek lost a five-set thriller to Rafael Nadal in the second round of the ‘15 Australian Open, but won over many fans with an incredible act of sportsmanship deep in the fifth set. After winning two challenger titles late in 2017, he won the USTA’s Australian Open Wild Card Challenge, guaranteeing him a place in the main draw come January. Joey Hanf of EXPERIENCE Magazine spoke with Smyczek after his successful fall run about his comeback, small-town roots, attitude on court and much more. 38

EXPERIENCE: You had a great finish

to the 2017 season, winning two challengers and claiming the USTA’s Australian Open Wild Card in the process. What were you most pleased with during that indoor stretch?

SMYCZEK: “It’s not something I’ve ever done before, to win a couple of tournaments in a short stretch like that. In my experience it’s not an easy thing to do because it’s not only physically tiring, but more mentally and emotionally tiring. For a guy like me, I have to be really mentally sharp to win matches. To be able to keep that up over the course of three weeks, yeah I was pretty happy.”

Experience Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

EXPERIENCE: All of those tournaments were indoors, and you’re

EXPERIENCE: What would you

SMYCZEK: “Growing up in Wisconsin you play indoors five months of the year,

SMYCZEK:

not a very big guy. How were you able to be so effective in conditions that normally suit the taller players? so it is something that I’m comfortable with. Some of the things I’ve been working on the last six months with my coach (Dustin Taylor) have started rounding into form. I did serve well over those few weeks which was important. But with how I was playing, I don’t think the surface or conditions mattered as much. I was really comfortable with my game. At the same time, a lot of my titles have come indoors, so maybe that goes back to my Wisconsin roots.”

EXPERIENCE: Prior to that run, you had fallen outside the top 200, a place you hadn’t been in 5 years. What was going through your head at that point?

say to an aspiring junior player who isn’t from a “big” tennis region? “Eventually I did move to Florida when I was about 18. So when you’re thinking about becoming a professional, it’s most likely going to involve moving. But up until (I was 18), I just enjoyed the sport so much that I wanted to spend every waking moment at the tennis court. I think if you love it, and you know that tennis is the thing you want to do with your life, you’ll figure out a way. No matter what; no matter where you’re located.”

SMYCZEK: “It’s really tough, because as tennis players we find a lot of our self-worth in our ranking and in our results, which probably isn’t the most healthy thing. It was a tough time, but when my ranking bottomed out in August that was actually not the worst because I had already started working with my new coach Dustin Taylor at that point and I was excited about the things we were working on. Earlier in the year I definitely had some dark days and was thinking about when I might retire. But I feel like I figured out how to play tennis again so I’m happy about that (laughing).” EXPERIENCE: Elaborate on that self-worth aspect. Why do you think tennis players are so aware or conscious of their ranking?

SMYCZEK: “There’s no other concrete way to measure yourself in tennis other than your ranking. It’s not like team sports where you’ve got guaranteed money or you know exactly the salary that you’re going to be making. There’s just not much else (in tennis) to use as a measuring stick. You try to find another thought process, but it is hard to escape that ranking.” EXPERIENCE: Twitter, Instagram etc. have played a big role in

athletes’ careers, maybe even in their self-worth as you referenced. What’s your favorite and least favorite thing about social media?

SMYCZEK:

“I get a lot of my news from Twitter. I try and follow smart people (laughing). So I do like that aspect. The really rough thing is the gamblers who constantly abuse people. I’ve gotten some pretty ugly messages about my family and even my wife. It’s something to be said for society as a whole, and it probably deserves it’s own discussion. I do take breaks every once in awhile, but really what I use it for is pretty boring; news.”

EXPERIENCE: You don’t exactly come from a tennis hot-bed in Milwaukee. What kind of pride or inspiration does that give you?

SMYCZEK: “Well I think you’re selling Milwaukee a little short! We’ve got a rich

history in Wisconsin with the Gullickson’s(Tom and Tim) and the Whitlinger’s(John and Tami). But yeah, I’m proud of being a Wisconsinite; my folks still live there. It just took me being pretty much a court rat when I was younger. And I definitely wouldn’t have ended up here if I didn’t have an older brother who was much better than me when we were young.”

Experience Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

Photo: Chris Griffin, fivetoolcreative.com

EXPERIENCE: Many in tennis

remember your 5 set match with Rafael Nadal at the Australian Open in 2015, where you showed great sportsmanship in the final set. Where did you learn to have a great attitude and demeanor on the court?

SMYCZEK:

“It wasn’t always like that (laughing). From a young age, the only thing my parents required of me was that I acted well on the court. I was yanked off the court a few times when I was misbehaving. Even throughout my earlier professional years, that sort of thing wasn’t always easy. It was always a work in progress, and it still is; I catch myself sometimes. It’s one of those things that I really wanted to do right by my parents. They sacrificed a lot for me to have a career in tennis, so I always wanted to do right by them. 39

EXPERIENCE: How do you bal-

ance that sportsmanship with also being a fierce competitor on court?

SMYCZEK: “It is definitely a fine line. And I do find sometimes that when I get overly competitive or am trying to get myself into a match, it can spiral quickly. It’s just something you have to be cognizant about; have periodical check-ins I think. And that’s not to say that somebody that throws or breaks their racquet should be frowned upon. It’s just not me, and not the way I want to act. It’s not like my way is the ‘right way’ or anything, it’s just right for me.” EXPERIENCE: You’re turning

30 in December, and that probably would have scared players 10-15 years ago in tennis. Now so many 30+ guys are having success. Has that changed your outlook?

SMYCZEK: “Yeah it has. I always had it in my mind that right around now is when I would be winding down my career. I’ve been on tour for twelve years, which is crazy now that I say it. My coach keeps telling me I’ve got three to five good years left; I don’t know about that. It’s

certainly very cool to see a guy like Tommy Haas playing deep into his thirties. And obviously Roger (Federer), but he’s a little different than the rest of us (laughing). I look at the guys like Paolo Lorenzi and Victor Estrella Burgos, who have reached their career high rankings in their thirties. It’s definitely inspiring.”

Photo: Chris Griffin, fivetoolcreative.com

EXPERIENCE: What are your

goals not only for next year but the rest of your career?

SMYCZEK: “First things first, I want to get back inside the top 100. There are so many things that are made possible by being there. Getting into more main draws, getting direct entry to the slams etc. And in terms of a real, tangible goal; I’d like to better my career high ranking of 68. And finally one of the things that’s been in the back of my mind the last few years is ‘making the world a better place through tennis.’ I haven’t quite figured out what that means for me yet, so I want to come up with an answer and act on it.” “I just enjoyed the sport so much that I wanted to spend every waking moment at the tennis courts.”

TENNIS STEPS UP FOR HURRICANE RELIEF BY RICK LIMPERT: @RICKROSWELL

The USTA announced that it donated

500,000

$

T

he sport of tennis may provide entertainment and exercise for millions, but the sport may be at its best when people are in need. Two devastating hurricanes hit the U.S. and Caribbean in 2017, but it didn’t go unnoticed, even during the biggest and busiest tennis event on the calendar.

The USTA announced that it donated $500,000 as part of its initial contributions toward immediate Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, with additional funds to come from on-site fundraising at the US Open. Tennis legend, Jimmy Connors, participated in a campaign onsite to raise relief funds by signing autographs and taking photos with fans, all while encouraging them to donate. NBA player and tennis enthusiast, Dirk Nowitzki, said that all proceeds from his September, Dirk Nowitzki Pro Celebrity Tennis Classic will go to Hurricane Harvey relief in Houston. Dallas Mavericks’ owner, Mark Cuban, has pledged to match all money raised by Nowitzki, up to $2-million. The event featured professionals Andy Roddick, Mark Knowles, Tommy Haas and Donald Young, along with actor, Owen Wilson. Economics and raising money are just one part of getting hurricane ravaged cities back on their feet. Manpower is the other. Tony Cruz, fitness director at the Cliff Drysdale owned and managed Tyler Athletic and Swim Club, is aiding with hurricane relief, as he was deployed in August to be on the ground to help with relief on Texas’ coast.

liff Drysdale Tennis is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Walden Racquet Club within the community of Walden on Lake Conroe in Montgomery, Texas. Since 1972, Walden’s tree-lined peninsula has been home to people from all over the world. While Lake Conroe embodies natural splendor, its origins are actually man-made. Construction of the 21,000-acre lake began in January 1970 and was completed in 1973. Five thousand acres of the lake are located within the Sam Houston National Forest. In addition to the lake, a privately owned 536-slip marina, a breathtaking privately owned 18hole golf course, a 16-court tennis facility, swimming pools, children’s playgrounds and “hike and bike” trails are among the many recreational amenities available to Walden residents. Social activities, community events, athletic competitions and volunteer opportunities occur year-round -- guaranteeing an active schedule for those who want to get involved. Walden on Lake Conroe is a prestigious community planned for 5,200 dwellings. There are estate homes, single-family homes, patio homes, townhouses, condominiums and a variety of commercial and institutional facilities, including the Walden Yacht Club, Racquet Club, Fitness Facility, and privately owned Golf Club and Marina.
