LEAVE AN IMPRESSION

DiAnna Drysdale Editor at Large

I was taught at a young age if you believe in something with all your heart, have 100% confidence, willing to put in the hard work, the hours and to go that extra mile you will be successful, period! CDT’s culture embodies these principles. The tenacity of the Cliff Drysdale Management team and the passion for tennis our clients have shared with us have turned what was a small business into the success story it is today. We are all on a journey. Along the way there are a lot of options to be considered. In this EXPERIENCE edition we will talk about choices and the determination to succeed. Since our last issue, we have been welcomed into the Troon family. Troon is to golf what CDT is to tennis. Troon’s success story mirrors our own.

We speak the same language of personal service, generating excitement for our sport and spearheading a healthy lifestyle. This marriage between the two companies is a strong match and it’s only going to grow and become more vibrant. More importantly, for you, the combined company provides for a world of new travel and entertainment opportunities. Our featured player is a story of a young woman small in stature, but with the heart of a lion and the speed of a tiger. We give you an inside look at Simona Halep and her determination to be and stay as the world’s number one female player. We are excited for you to navigate through our pages and learn about all the events and options Cliff Drysdale Tennis/Troon Golf has to offer. Enjoy the journey…

PLAY TO WIN

Kimberly Arena Senior Editor

In every competition, whether it is on the court, in business, or simply in achieving a life goal, there is a fundamental need to exhibit the burning desire to win to take yourself to the next level. This desire to meet and exceed your goal is essential in order for your actions to be translated into determination, and ultimately, a winning performance. The desire to win is at the heart and true spirit of all competitive environments, and goes hand in hand with willpower. We all love the story of underdogs overcoming insurmountable odds to become the ultimate victor. Why? Because it embodies the idea that whomever wants to win the most, will win, and that willpower alone is a such a strong force to be reckoned with. Willpower is ultimately something we are all capable of harnessing; it is not a rare quality only possessed by the elite athlete, business person or politician. In this issue of EXPERIENCE, we feature some of the best stories from today’s tennis scene that exemplify this desire to win. From some of the tennis industry’s best making positive changes that contribute to growth, professional players rising to the peak of their successes, to local clubs and

4

recreational players making an impact on the court at home. The desire to win drives what makes tennis exciting for all of us. It is this continued and growing excitement - “the hype”- that ensures the success and growth of tennis in the future. Tennis industry leaders must continue to innovate and provide incentives for current and prospective players at all levels to develop and maintain the desire to win. These come not only in the form of tangible incentives like money and prizes, but also the intangibles such as modes of achieving recognition, fame, contracts, partnerships, and future opportunities. There is a paradigm shift occurring which will positively affect how we as tennis industry professionals grow the game, how players of all levels are evaluated and progress, and how the elite play the game and are ultimately rewarded for their achievements. This is a very exciting time to be involved in tennis, and I invite each of you to be a bigger part of building the excitement within our sport, growing the collective desire to win and demonstrating your will power to succeed.

LEARNING HOW TO COMPETE Winning comes from setting goals, being patient as you put in the work when no one is looking, and actually wanting to improve. Many times, in the improvement process you have to be willing to take a step back to continue moving forward. Once you have gained the confidence and skills needed to win, the next hurdle is conquering the mental struggles associated with winning. It takes time to learn how to win. Katie Steck Managing Editor

Sure, everyone wants to win; it is fun to win. I am extremely competitive and determined; I enjoy winning, both on and off a tennis court. However, through my years of experience as a player and a coach, I have accepted that winning is not the most important thing and everyone’s definition of success can be quite different. Some players measure success on beating their all-time rival in their club championship, hitting 20 forehands cross court, or simply meeting new friends through the sport we all love. Our coaching staff across all Cliff Drysdale Tennis locations focuses on the important aspects to build a successful athlete over time, whatever a successful athlete means to the individual member or guest.

While coaching players of all levels, I found that there is enough pressure from outside sources to win a match. So after any match finishes, I push my players to consider the question, “How did you compete?” For me, this is the most important question because the outcome of the match does not tell me how much effort a player put into a match or if they were successful by their individual expectations of success. I am more concerned if they were successfully using the correct technique from previous practices, did they compete hard and dig deep, and did they keep a positive mindset throughout the match. I place an emphasis on their longterm goals of success, rather than on one particular match and its outcome. Players featured in this magazine like Simona Halep and Steve Johnson have much more on the line in their matches than anyone I have ever coached. They serve as great examples of players who have a huge desire to win but and even bigger discipline to succeed.

PUSHING FURTHER As I read through Issue no. 7 for the first (of many) times, our theme really began to hit home with me personally. While many people have a passion for tennis, to accomplish your goals on and off the court requires a serious level of discipline. The work you put in to improve your game--or grow your business--is where the real results are had.

Joey Hanf Managing Editor

Nothing is handed to you in tennis; while some players may be supremely talented, it’s most often those that work the hardest that become successful. And when you can combine desire and discipline, that’s when something really special can happen. From Simona Halep’s perseverance to Steve Johnson talking about his need to learn how to lose, there are many lessons that can be learned while reading through these stories.

Experience Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

And as we at Cliff Drysdale Tennis continue to grow at a faster rate than ever before, it’s crucial to stop and reflect on what got us here in the first place. Providing each and every player with a memorable experience is our ultimate goal, and without excellent tennis professionals this wouldn’t be possible. As we grow, I take great pride in knowing that we are doing everything in our power to equip coaches with all the tools they need to excel in our industry. One thing I do know is that if we want tennis as a whole to be successful in the United States, it’s going to take a disciplined effort from all interested parties. The groundwork isn’t always the most glamorous part; but it’s the most important.

FROM THE DESK of DON HENDERSON

BUILDING A B E T T E R T O MO R R O W Since our company’s inception in 2001, we have always prided ourselves for our on court performance. Not only from a technique and knowledge standpoint, but also emphasizing a high energy and engaging approach. Take a lesson or clinic with one of our pros, and we want to leave everything out there with you. Often, our pros will be sweating just as much if not more than our clients. And so as we began to expand to new locations, clubs and resorts, maintaining this level of excellence was the top priority. Nearly two decades later, we are managing over 30 facilities across the United States and Bermuda. Growing the game of tennis is not just about reaching new people and introducing new players; it’s about giving them a one-of-a-kind experience that makes them want to keep coming back. As we looked at opportunities to scale our business, one option stood out. In July of 2018, Cliff Drysdale Management was acquired by Troon, the international leader in club management, development and marketing. Most important to me in this decision was that we partnered with a company with great culture and understanding of our business. Troon has set the benchmark in Golf and Hospitality management, and with the ability to bring our tennis expertise into their portfolio, it was a natural fit. Over the last six months, we have begun a number of new exciting initiatives with Troon to grow tennis and expand our offerings. However, we know that maintaining our on-court product is paramount to our success and tennis participation across the country. With the average age of tennis coaches getting older each year, we wanted to create a program that would bring in a new generation of tennis industry professionals, and offer them a clear pathway to success. I am so excited to meet our first group of Professional Tennis U (PTU) trainees this January. PTU is a 12 month, all-encompassing training program that combines over 1200 hours of on-court coaching experience with a plethora of off court training sessions and seminars. We have a group of young men and women who are passionate about tennis, and I am really invested in helping them acquire the tools necessary to excel in our industry. Based at our New Braunfels headquarters, PTU trainees will be gain experience in every level of tennis programming. They will be learning about finance, accounting, human resources, marketing, media and event management among many other things. Successful completion of the program will allow our talented trainees a job offer at various CDM/Troon locations as well as sponsored USPTA certification. With our friends at Troon, the ability for our employees to progress from Tennis Professional to General Manager has never been more realistic. We are always inviting new applicants and anybody passionate about a career in tennis is somebody we desperately want to meet. The way forward for Cliff Drysdale Tennis has been and remains first and foremost on the court, and growing our team of talented professionals will allow us to continue providing the Ultimate Tennis Experience to more players for years to come.

T E N N I S IS A PSYC HOL OGIC A L

R OL L ER C OA S T E R The diabolical scoring system puts you on the brink of triumph and disaster point after point. Just when you have climbed the mountain by winning the first set, you have to start again from scratch. Same with each game within the set. So there are points that test your character constantly. Game point, break point, set point, match point. All terrifying! And thrilling. Why is it that when you are in front and the finish line is on the horizon you tense up? Why when you are down do you have more freedom to play without fear and you are free to let your natural game take over?

“It’s because the fear of losing can be greater than the desire to win! Think it through. Understanding the dynamics of this tug of war in your mind is half the battle. It is part of what makes or breaks a champion even at the highest levels. I see it all the time on the tours. The momentum swings during matches. The break down of a player during a season that can last months or even years. Novak Djokovic was clearly the class of the field a couple of years ago, and is now again the main man. The process of overcoming these struggles and fighting through the demons is how you build discipline. In the interim, he faded. It was psychological, not his physical talents that lacked. I am always surprised at how quickly we media pundits give up on players when they start to struggle. Federer and Nadal were both supposed to be over the hill multiple times. Look at them now! Simona Halep was just games away from incredible victories on numerous occasions, and failed time and again. But her ability to keep facing these challenges head on allowed her to finally cross the line. Never again can somebody tell her that she is not a major champion. When something comes that hard, it is often even more satisfying. She will be in contention for many more in the years to come. The winners circle is where you want to end up of course, but getting there is easier if you learn the discipline to deal with this emotional roller coaster. There are a thousand different ways to handle pressure, but my favorite was telling myself that this match was great exercise and was the most fun thing I was going to do for the day. Of course, there are so many different things that can happen during the course of a match, or a season. Accepting these challenges as a positive may well be your biggest mental test; but it will also be a pivotal key to your success.

INN AT P ERRY C A B IN

TENNIS & GOLF’S NEW EXPERIENCE ON MARYLAND’S EASTERN SHORE New Cliff Drysdale-managed tennis facility and Pete Dye golf course at Inn at Perry Cabin Rick Limpert One of the most intimate luxury resorts on the East Coast now has a new tennis center and an 18-hole Pete Dye golf course to go along with its 78 rooms and a number of amenities right along the Chesapeake Bay in St. Michaels, Md. The Inn at Perry Cabin By Belmond lets guests live the good life as the new amenities join a world class spa and fitness center, an outdoor pool and a fleet of yachts where you can learn to sail or set out for a day of relaxation on the Bay. The property offers picturesque grounds tended by an onsite horticulturist and an experienced gardening team. Lawns and flowerbeds, farmland and forest spread across 26 acres, all accessible by gravel walkways that invite guests to explore and wander. Blooming plants ensure there is always something to inspire and excite. The waterfront restaurant offers views that only this unique location can offer. The staff is attentive and accommodating of any specific needs. Pet owners often reserve the garden rooms that come with private terraced gardens as an outdoor space for their four-legged friends. For the active set this summer, Inn at Perry Cabin opened its three lighted Har-Tru tennis courts managed by Cliff Drysdale Tennis. Hailing from Hertfordshire, UK, Inn at Perry Cabin’s Director of Tennis Robert Wright uses his dry sense of humor and his more than decade-long coaching experience to run camps, lead the adult and junior instruction and organize special events/mixers not only for guests, but tennis players in the region. “We think there is a need for a beautiful club like this in the area,” explained Wright. “There are tennis enthusiasts that reside in the community, and this will drive tennis playing guests to visit and stay for a long weekend, the better part of a week or longer.” Wright comes to Maryland from the Omni Rancho Las Palmas 24

Resort & Spa in the Palm Springs area of the California Desert. As with all Cliff Drysdale Tennis run facilities, there will be an emphasis on family, fun, and tennis instruction. It’s official; tennis is now a priority at the Inn. “Inn at Perry Cabin has long been a destination for sailing and yachting enthusiasts,” said Michael Hoffmann, Inn at Perry Cabin General Manager. “With the addition of the Inn at Perry Cabin Tennis Club by Cliff Drysdale, we look forward to enhancing this tradition by welcoming tennis enthusiasts to our stellar facilities.” Along with the tennis center, the long-awaited opening of the Links at Perry Cabin 18-hole championship golf course occured this summer. The Pete Dye-designed course is already a gem of the East Coast as golfers get to play against a backdrop of indigenous trees and the beautiful Chesapeake Bay. The course is loaded with excitement, especially when it comes to the par-3’s that yes, include an island green. The Dye Family has a tradition of naming their favorite golf holes, and the the last three at Perry Cabin are tabbed, “the Goodnight Kiss.” Why? You never forget the goodnight kiss on your first date! Golfers will also find Dye’s ubiquitous railroad ties, smallish greens and risk-and-reward golf for players of all handicaps. “We all believe this is one of the finest golf experiences on the east coast,” adds Hoffmann. A 12-acre practice facility is on the way, complete with a driving range, practice greens, a grill and even simulators. Tee times and golf packages can be booked by calling (443) 258-2228.

Playing on Philippe Chatrier stadium in the 2014 French Open final, 22 year old Simona Halep was the heavy underdog against Maria Sharapova. And despite owning a quiet personality and underwhelming stature, Halep had the French crowd firmly on her side. Romanian flags were flying from all corners, as Halep and Sharapova played one of the best grand slam matches in the last decade. Sharapova would win in three sets, capturing her fifth major title. But it was Halep who would win over the public’s adoration. Even with the spotlight suddenly shining on her, Halep continued to progress up the rankings and make deep runs in big tournaments. Without possessing a major weapon like a big serve or overpowering groundstrokes, Halep’s key trait that allowed her to win matches was her fighting spirit. She clearly is one of the best movers on the WTA, but her ability to scramble and fight for every point created an identity for the new star. As Halep won more and more Premier level tournaments, pressure and expectation naturally rose from both the public and within herself. With one of the best coaches in the world on her team in Darren Cahill, many believed that Halep would overcome the mental barriers that were stopping her from winning a grand slam. It took three years for her to reach another final; once again she earned a spot in the French Open title match in 2017. This time, though, she would go in as the heavy favorite. 18 year old Jelena Ostapenko made a surprising if not shocking run to the final, and the experienced Halep was picked by most to get the win. If she could come through, she would also earn the WTA number 1 ranking. As so often happens when a script is supposedly set in sports, nothing went to plan. Halep led 6-4 3-0, with game points for 4-0, an almost insurmountable lead. But Ostapenko would storm back to win in three sets and capture her first major trophy. “This one hurts, a lot,” said Halep after the match. “Maybe because I realize more what is happening. Three years ago (in the French Open final) was something new, but this one hurts. I need time to -- I don’t know -- to go away.” After the crushing defeat, a trend began to appear for Halep. She would go through stretches of excellence, only to have mental demons haunt her in big moments. When a career milestone was on the line, she would sometimes appear despondent on court; unable to face the pressure of the moment. Her passion for tennis and desire to win had essentially become a roadblock to her career goals. Experience Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

“Now I’m happy that I can be positive on court, and I will never be negative,” Halep said.

Halep’s fighting spirit began to come and go, with such an unpredictable attitude that coach Cahill even took a leave of absence from Halep, challenging her to be better. Negativity took over. But Halep worked to earn Cahill’s trust again, through a concerted effort of positivity on court regardless of the score or result. “Now I’m happy that I can be positive on court, and I will never be negative,” Halep said. “I felt ashamed about what I did.” Fast forward to the beginning of the 2018 season, and Halep entered the year ranked number one in the world. She still was in search of that elusive first major title, and the looming cloud of underachievement began to show itself again early at the Australian Open, when Halep rolled her ankle in the first round. She then faced a handful of match points in the third round against Lauren Davis. This would be more of the same, it seemed. But never before had Halep responded so well to adversity; she fought her way through a stretch of tough matches to reach the final. Again, opportunity was on the doorstep. But again, she fell just short. Caroline Wozniacki, who had faced many of the same obstacles in her career, won a thrilling three set match to her first major. This loss felt different for Halep, though. She played well and was mentally engaged the entire time; her 22 28 18

opponent was just too good on that day. “I’m sad, but I can still smile,” Halep said. “I cried, but now I can smile. It’s just a tennis match in the end. I did 100 percent of what I could today.” That change in mindset, and Halep’s ability to mentally overcome defeat proved to have the single greatest impact on her career. Just four months later, back at the French Open, she once again reached the final. This time, her perspective was clear. “I lost three times before now and no one died, so it will be okay,” Halep said before the final. Sure enough, it was fourth time lucky for the Romanian. But this wasn’t really luck at all; Halep’s fighting spirit on court was at its very best, coming from a set and break down to defeat Sloane Stephens. Like all others before her, Halep now felt the glorious highs of victory. To cross the finish line, Halep was forced to not only fight for every point, but to fight the demons in her head that slowed her. Four years after reaching her first major final, Halep had come full circle. She’ll now forever be a grand slam champion.

BLINK AND YOU MISS IT HEAD’s new Speed Line of Racquets Features Graphene 360 Technology Joey Hanf How do you improve a racquet that is already universally popular? Well, HEAD Tennis answered that question emphatically in the summer of 2018 with the introduction of the Speed 360 racquets. Originally introduced in 2009, the Speed line is endorsed by Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev among others. Featuring a sleek new asymmetric design, the bold black and white color scheme make an immediate impression. This frame has become especially popular with high performance competitors and club players alike; the blend of modern speed with classic control gives players an incredible level of confidence to swing free. New Graphene 360 technology is strategically positioned in the shaft and extends into the racquet head. It strengthens the frame, providing greater stability and optimized energy transfer from racquet to ball – maximizing the power of your game.

30

The Speed line once again includes the Pro, Midplus and “S”, and new to the collection are the MP Lite and Lite versions, which are lower in swingweight for growing junior players or those looking for a quick and maneuverable frame, but still wanting that crisp control. “It’s been a hit with our members,” said Cal Loveridge, Director of Tennis at John Newcombe Country Club. “The racquet really gets through the air fast, which helps a lot of recreational players get more racquet head speed.” HEAD didn’t just push the envelope on the technology side, they also implemented a revolutionary marketing campaign. The “Speed Wins” contest allowed customers who registered their purchased Speed 360 racquet to get a full reimbursement if either Novak Djokovic or Alexander Zverev won the U.S. Open. Of course, it was Djokovic who would capture the title in New York.

“I’ve always loved the Speed line and was using the Graphene Touch version for over a year,” said Zach Lipson, Tennis Professional. “When I tried the new Graphene 360 this summer, I immediately noticed how stable the racquet was; I felt totally connected to the ball.”

Needless to say, in just a short time, the new Speed line has made a serious impact on all areas of tennis. If you haven’t tried it out yourself yet, visit one of our Cliff Drysdale Tennis facilities around the nation for a full demo.

In addition to the slightly adjusted feel, HEAD widened the spacing between the cross strings, which produced a significant increase in spin and power.

WHITNEY OSUIGWE Captures 2018 RBC Pro Challenge Title By Joey Hanf

16 Year Old American Wins First Pro Title at Tyler Athletic and Swim Club It was an historic week at the Tyler Athletic and Swim Club, as 16-year-old American Whitney Osuigwe won the singles title at the RBC Pro Challenge presented by Oak Creek, an $80,000 USTA Pro Circuit event. Osuigwe’s 6-3 6-2 win marked the first professional singles title of her young, promising career. The tournament, hosted by Cliff Drysdale Management, has often served as a launching pad for future stars. Osuigwe, from Bradenton, Florida, got out to an early lead and didn’t look back. A marathon ninth game of the match proved to be pivotal, as Osuigwe saved multiple break points before holding to take first set. She broke serve early in the second set and closed out the match on her first opportunity. “I just try not to even think about getting nervous,” Osuigwe said. “I know that’s not going to help me; I just try to do the things my coaches and I are working on and have fun with it.” 32 26

“Whitney was a pleasure to watch all week and there’s no doubt her future is bright,” said Scott McCulloch, tournament organizer. “Her movement and explosiveness on court is almost as impressive as her incredible mental strength and self confidence. She did not blink in pressure situations.” Osuigwe had a stellar junior career, earning the number one overall ranking as well as capturing multiple junior grand slam titles. In her first full year playing professional tournaments, Osuigwe has risen over 800 places in the WTA Rankings. With her win in Tyler, she climbed to a career high ranking of 226 in the world. “It was a really exciting tournament,” she said. “Two weeks ago I wasn’t playing very well, but when I got here I just really loved it and I played amazing all week.” Osuigwe’s win in Tyler combined with her quarterfinal

appearance at the WTA $125K in Houston earned her the USTA’s Australian Open Wild Card. At just 16 years old, she’ll make her main draw debut in Australia come January. The RBC Pro Challenge and USTA Pro Circuit serve as excellent stepping stones for future stars like Osuigwe. Danielle Collins, a finalist at last year’s tournament, used momentum from Tyler to propel her all the way inside the world’s top 40. The second annual RBC Pro Challenge made a huge impact on not only the Tyler Athletic and Swim Club, but the City of Tyler as a whole. Numerous community events were held, such as a school field trip powered by Net Generation, a chamber of commerce mixer as well as a Pro-Am and Sponsor party. Tournament awareness grew not only in the local community but also all over the world, with The Tennis Channel broadcasting matches worldwide from the quarterfinals all the way through the finals. Finally, strong crowds flocked to the event to support these incredible players, something that didn’t go unnoticed. “It’s amazing to have a crowd like this, because at most of these level tournaments you don’t get the type of support that we got here in Tyler,” Osuigwe said. “It’s really nice that the whole community comes out to support us.”

CLIFF DRYSDALE TENNIS TEAMS UP WITH USTA A national collaboration offering more tennis opportunities to more adults and kids across the country By Scott Mcculloch

We all hear the phrase “growing the game of tennis” used commonly with different approaches on the best way to accomplish this task. The path Cliff Drysdale Tennis is committed to as we look into 2019 and beyond is a very clear and simple one: bringing complimentary and low cost tennis experiences to the local community that are positive, fun, social, engaging and achievable. We are equally focused on bringing in new players as well as encouraging returning players to pick up the racquet once again. Additionally, we must increase the education and training for tennis industry professionals and staff. Lifting the bar higher so that the player has an engaging and fun first tennis experience along with easy to follow tennis options for kids and adults on how they can continue to engage and enjoy the game. In the effort to align common goals, Cliff Drysdale Tennis started working closely with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National division in January of 2018 on a nationwide collaboration activating and piloting tennis experiences with the aim of positively increasing tennis participation at CDT locations along with other local clubs. One of the pilots was held in conjunction with Net Generation – the USTA’s youth (ages 5-18) tennis brand, dedicated to welcoming millions of new players to the game by focusing on empowerment, unity, and play. Net Generation youth programs are currently offered at all of our year-round locations. Net Generation has a variety of resources and tools including a powerful app and curriculum which helps our instructors deliver fun play options in the form of team challenges – that enable kids to enjoy a fun “play to learn” environment.

36

Additionally, the Net Generation program has complimented CDT’s efforts of providing an easier entry point to partner with local schools and communities, along with free equipment and education tools for the P.E. teachers. The CDT team have been at the ground level involved with our schools putting more racquets in more kids’ hands and assisting Physical Education teachers with continuing tennis as a part of their P.E. classes. In addition, CDT has added complimentary Net Generation ‘Fun Days’ at our clubs across the country following school visits so that families can visit a CDT club and enjoy a complimentary and enriching family tennis experience together. Adult participation in tennis has declined over the years with players aging out, more active lifestyle options, and honestly a lack of focus and effort by the tennis industry to attract and engage new players to the game. In attracting new adults, we need tennis to be viewed as a social lifestyle full of fun, exercise, friends; not “cliquey”, hard to play and expensive. In 2018, CDT and USTA piloted a Tennis 101 and social league program over select CDT clubs that provided 900 players four weeks of complimentary tennis instruction along with four weeks of social play at a low cost. By all accounts, the pilot proved to be a success with a lot of those players still enjoying tennis today while also providing some great insight into how we can better attract and engage new players to tennis and make it fun and social. Both organizations are excited to expand the scope in 2019 to include improved coaching and certifications, along with piloting aligned initiatives for tennis as we work together to get more people to the court more often.

I MEET THE GRISTWOODS National Troon Cardholders Loving the Golf Life 38

Experience Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

T WOULD BE an understatement to say that Bernie and Graham Gristwood love golf. The energetic couple from Alberta, Canada, are National Troon Cardholders and play 100-plus rounds of golf a year at courses across North America. “We purchased a fifth wheel a few years ago and make it a point to do our ‘Troon Tour’ each year,” explained Bernie. “In January, Graham and I drive down to the Phoenix area (from Calgary) and stop at Troon courses along the way. This year we played Conestoga in Mesquite, Nevada; Classic Club in Palm Desert, California; and Sewailo in Tucson, Arizona, before making our way to Phoenix. We then spend about three months in the Phoenix area playing as much golf as we can.” Bernie and Graham have been living (and loving) the golf life for about seven years. They plan vacations and plot travel routes based on Troon golf course locations and have made countless new friends along the way. “We’ve met a lot of great people during our travels, from the friendly staff at the courses, to folks we’ve been paired with,” said Bernie. “You can always tell it’s a Troon-managed golf course from the service, the people, the branding. It starts the moment you drop off your golf clubs and the friendly greeting you receive.” When asked to identify her favorite Troon-managed course, Bernie had a hard time picking just one. “Troon North Pinnacle is a favorite because I got a hole-in-one on No. 8, but I also love the Boulders South Course. Of course, Quintero in Peoria is beautiful, Maderas in San Diego is exceptional, Bahía Beach in Puerto Rico is incredible, and Palmilla in Mexico is gorgeous.” Bernie retired from Calgary city politics in 2010, while Graham owns a Calgary-

based contracting company. Both are 15-handicappers and love to tee it up wherever their travels take them. “We will be heading to Denver this summer for some golf and Colorado Rockies baseball,” said Bernie. “Then in November, we’re going to Florida for our 40th anniversary. That’s one of the many benefits of having a National Troon Card — no matter where we go, chances are there’s a Troon-managed course in the area.” As National Troon Cardholders for the last seven years, Bernie and Graham have advice for non-cardholders and those with regional Troon Cards. “First, purchase your Troon Card early

and take advantage of the early renewal rates — I highly recommend getting the National Troon Card,” advised Bernie. “Next, check the listings and rates on the Troon Card website. After we determine which course we’d like to play, I phone the course and speak to the staff about the available times and rates. Then, use your Troon Rewards to help you save even more. And, finally get out and play as often as you can!” Sage advice and well said, Bernie. #WithMyTroonCard ▪ For more information about Troon Cards, go to: www.troon.com/troon-golf-cards

D OU BL E S T H E G AME FOR EVERY PLAYER BY SCOTT COLEBOURNE

My first memories of tennis come from spending time at my local tennis club moving the sheep off the court, mowing the lawn, rolling the courts, lining the courts and finally getting to play on the grass courts! I have such fond memories of these times and consider myself very lucky to learn to play tennis with adult players (when I was still only a junior player). This along with each phase of my life has shaped my own strategies in doubles and also influenced my coaching style today.

L EA R N I N G T O P L A Y I grew up playing on grass courts in New Zealand with adults. This was a very formative time in my development and having this experience on grass courts really forced me to learn to use the continental grip on every shot. The continental grip is also often called a chopper grip, and involves holding the racket as if you were chopping wood, or using it as a meat cleaver. On grass courts the ball bounces very low and unpredictably, to accommodate for these bounces it really helps to use the continental grip on every shot as it allows you to adjust last minute. In addition to this, playing on grass and using that continental grip encourages one to move to the net at every opportunity. This helped me develop great volleys at a young age. When teaching doubles today I also encourage players to use the continental grip on most of their shots, specifically the serve, volley, overhead and often the backhand.

JUN I OR FO U N D A T I O N As a competitive junior in New Zealand, one of my coaches in my teenage years was a very strong doubles coach. His main philosophy was to ensure you made a high percentage of first serves, and that 90% of these serves were placed closed to the service “T” on both sides of the court. This served me great as a junior player and it’s still a strategy I use and teach over twenty years later. On the deuce side my

favorite serve is a kick or topspin serve to the “T”; this serve bounces high to a right-handed player’s backhand and often results in an easy poach for my partner. On the ad side I prefer to hit a slice serve to the T also, this ball moves away from the returner, and whilst not as effective for creating poach opportunities, many returners anticipate a wide serve and can often be caught off guard by a serve to the “T”. In my teaching methods today I reinforce the goal of making a very high percentage of first serves, this removes the opportunity opponents have to attack a weaker second serve and by serving down the middle it does create more poach opportunities at every level.

WINNING AT ANY L EVEL In the days since I finished college tennis I haven’t played many sanctioned matches, however my doubles style today is very much a product of my upbringing. I prefer to use a continental grip as much as possible and rush the net. I like serving down the T on both sides and rush the net behind the serve, and I love to step into returns and apply pressure not by power, but by placement. Whilst not as fast or as powerful as what I was twenty years ago, I believe this style of play and strategy can be executed at any age, at any level with great success.

C OLLEG E T E N N I S It was no surprise to me that I had the most success in college when playing doubles. The major addition to my game in college came on the returning side of the ball in the form of a much more aggressive approach. My partner and I developed a great bond and really attacked the return of serve with our footwork; whilst we weren’t always successful it did put a lot of pressure on our opponents and was often enough pressure to get one break of serve per match, and often that was enough for a win. We attacked returns by stepping inside the baseline and using an abbreviated groundstroke. This was either a slice return or a block topspin return, both choices put the focus on keeping the ball low to our opponents’ feet and not trying to overpower them, but making them hit a tough first volley. This is a strategy that I still teach today to players of all levels. I recommend attacking all serves with footwork, moving into the court and using an abbreviated swing, and choosing a target prior to the serve being hit.

With just about everything at a resident’s fingertips, Walden on Lake Conroe is quickly becoming one of the most coveted communities in all of East Texas.

“It’s one of the few communities you can find where tennis is an amenity,” said Mondshine. “We’ve got 5000 lots supporting our tennis facility, and for our residents it’s an incredible opportunity.” Mondshine has been playing tennis at Walden for over thirty years, and believes that the passion and care for the facility has led to constant growth and improvement in its offerings. “We have organized open play on the weekends, which I really enjoy. Starting at about 8am on Saturday, we have a group of players at all levels that often fills all 16 courts. It’s pretty amazing to see. With new programs in place for both adult beginners and children, Walden Racquet Center is working hard to attract new faces to the courts. “The Cliff Drysdale Experience is open tennis for everyone,” said David Hartman, General Manager. “We’ve had an in crease of 30% in new players, both adult and juniors, participating at Walden, and it has really freshened up the program.”

Bill Mondshine, Walden on Lake Conroe Resident

The program is led by Director of Tennis Rob Lowe, a USPTA Elite Certified teaching pro with over 10 years of experience. A number of USTA teams call Walden home, and players are offered daily clinics, seasonal camps and complimentary monthly mixers open to all residents. Lowe, who is originally from the United Kingdom, says that the energy and engagement from the members has been a breath of fresh air for him as a coach. “This is definitely one of the strongest, closely-knit tennis communities I’ve ever been a part of,” said Lowe, who has led tennis programs in many markets across both the U.K. and U.S. “The people here are truly willing to learn and improve on the court, and that makes my job very enjoyable.” With just about everything at a resident’s fingertips, Walden on Lake Conroe is quickly becoming one of the most coveted communities in all of East Texas.

The club has consistently improved monthly programming almost every month for the past three years. Through this growth, the club was able to undergo a large capital project adding two additional courts and is currently in the process of adding even more. ”This is due in a large part to the community of tennis players and raving fans that Michael has created at Red Ledges,” said Scott Colebourne, Chief Operations Officer. “The club personifies the CDT experience and we are excited for its continued growth.”

DIRECTOR of the Y E AR : Harry Wright, In-Shape Marina Harry Wright is the Director of Tennis at In-Shape Stockton Marina, where he previously served as Assistant Director. He has been a strong personality and coach for Cliff Drysdale Tennis for over four years. The courts at Marina are always busy, in large part due to Harry’s tireless efforts on court to build and retain a strong tennis community. “Harry has grown tremendously over the past 12 months since taking his post as Director,” said Scott McCulloch, Vice President of Operations. It has been great to watch Harry put his training of the past 4 years into action and blending it with his fun and always engaging personality. I am proud of his development as a Director and the leadership he has shown coupled with his drive to continue to improve.”

Q & A

Q and A STEVE JOHNSON Steve Johnson is a 29 year old American from Orange, California. He enjoyed one of the greatest college tennis careers of all time, having won 4 NCAA team titles and 2 NCAA singles titles, including an incredible streak of 72 match wins in a row to finish his senior season. Having competed full time on the ATP World Tour for the better part of six years, Johnson has cemented himself as one of America’s top players. He’s won four singles titles in his career, and earned a Bronze Medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. We sat down with Steve this offseason to discuss his journey on tour.

No. 33 on the ATP World Tour

EXPERIENCE: It’s the 5th straight year you’ve finished inside the top 50. When you finish a season, what is your process for evaluating and looking back on the last 12 months to measure your success? JOHNSON: I think you have to look at things in the whole. You’ve got to take the good with the bad and analyze the whole year. The end of my season wasn’t exactly what I wanted, but overall I think I had a great year. I would have liked to have squeezed into the top 30; that’s been a goal of mine to finish the year, but I just missed out. EXPERIENCE: What’s been the key to your consistency? Holding your ground like that can be incredibly difficult especially after the tour gets familiar with your game and young players continue to rise. JOHNSON: I think it’s really the consistency of the people I’ve had around

me. Everybody involved plays a big part, from coach to physio, my wife and family. Having people around me that keep everything in perspective, and know that tennis isn’t a life or death sport. My performance on court isn’t a reflection of my character as a person. I have a chance to do something bigger and better, and hopefully tennis can just facilitate what I’m able to do in life. My goal has been to keep the people around who are believers in what I can do on and off the court. Their belief in me gives me a lot of belief in myself.

EXPERIENCE: I want to jump back to your incredibly successful college years. National championships won both with your team and individually. And that incredible 72 match win streak. What was that experience like? Experience Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

JOHNSON: It was definitely a different mindset than playing on the tour. Every week for us was basically like a new tournament. Playing Stanford or Cal, each match you had a fresh start. I enjoyed it so much; my coach Peter Smith and our assistant coaches were such a big influence in my success and me becoming the tennis player that I am today. They knew when to push me, and they knew when to pull back. I was just on campus yesterday at USC to see some old faculty and friends. It’s a place I call home and I loved playing alongside my teammates. At the end of the day, my match was just one point and everyone had to play well for to us be so successful.

“I have a chance to do something bigger and better, and hopefully tennis can just facilitate what I’m able to do in life.”

EXPERIENCE: What has it been like now playing Davis Cup, the Olympics and other team competitions? And how are you approaching the change in format starting next year? JOHNSON: I love playing for something that’s bigger than myself. I think I thrive in that environment. I thoroughly enjoy when I have people around supporting me whether I win or lose. I was extremely bummed that we didn’t get a chance to finish Davis Cup out with a final this year in the states. I think the new format will be interesting. I’m as curious as anybody to see what type of positive or negative pushback the players will have next year, because I don’t think anybody has the answer. I hope it works because I thoroughly enjoy playing for my country. Hopefully we can get the U.S. off to a great start in the new format with a win.

EXPERIENCE: You’ve gotten a chance to compete with just about every top player now. Who presented the greatest challenge, and who was the most fun to play? JOHNSON: They all pose a pretty great challenge in their own ways. I’ve played them all, and they’re all incredible competitors and competitive thinkers. One of the most fun matches I got to play in my career was last year in Indian Wells against Federer. It was 7-6 7-6 and really close the whole match. I had both my parents in the stands as well as a lot of friends and family. Even though it was a loss, it was a great moment at what I consider my home tournament. EXPERIENCE: When you turned pro full time, what kind of expectations did you have for yourself? JOHNSON: Honestly I don’t know what I expected. I didn’t lose in college, so that was something I needed to learn how to do. Sounds strange, but that was an important step. I don’t know if I thought it would be easy, but I do know that I took a lot of the losses in the first 18 months really hard. I had to learn that losing is not the end of the world in tennis. There’s only one guy at the end of the week who doesn’t lose. That process took me a long time; early in my career a loss sometimes put thoughts in my head that maybe I wasn’t good enough. EXPERIENCE: You had to really adapt your game coming out of college. Obviously your serve and forehand were always great weapons. But talk about how you developed your backhand slice into a shot that could really help you in matches? JOHNSON: A lot of people, and a lot of coaches

look back on your year as a negative. I need to make my serve and forehand stronger, I need to sure up any type of weakness of questions that I had about my game and the end of this year. For me, at the end of the day when I decide to hang the racquets up, I just want to look back and know that I did everything in my power possible to maximize my potential in my career.

even, that saw me early thought that maybe there was a glaring weakness in my game. ‘If it doesn’t get better you’ll never make it’ was something I heard a lot. But I have such a unique game and style of play, when I use all of my attributes, players aren’t going to enjoy playing me. It’s all about trying to make my opponents as uncomfortable as possible. It’s been a fun process and I’ve gotten a lot better. And I really think I’ve improved everything, from forehand, backhand, serve, mental game, fitness etc. Hopefully I’ve still got a few years left and can keep getting better.

EXPERIENCE: As we approach the 2019 season, where do you feel like you can improve the most? JOHNSON: I just want to keep getting better as a tennis player. I don’t like to put a ranking number or a goal or winning a certain number of tournaments, because you could fall short and

Fay and Manuel Fernandez bring their two children on family vacations and include tennis, as well as many resort activities, in part of their trip. “We like to go to Cliff Drysdale” locations because we can “tailor the tennis to play as a family, and I can play more if I want,” said Fay.

“We like to go to Cliff Drysdale [locations] so I can play tennis and there are other activities for [the entire family to enjoy].” Manuel and their son typically play in the clinics with Fay, but they always like the clinics where they can play with a variety of other locals and resort guests “which makes the clinics fun.” Fay plays tennis on USTA teams, while Manuel plays tennis more socially for exercise. Their son is a competitive junior, and their daughter does not play tennis. “We like to go to Cliff Drysdale [locations] so I can play tennis and there are other activities for [the entire family to enjoy].” “I’ve had the pleasure of being on the courts with Fay, Manuel and Thomas many times over the past six years at Amelia Island,” said Scott Colebourne, Chief Operating Officer for Cliff Drysdale Tennis. “It’s being great to see them return as campers to Amelia Island as well as their games develop over the years. In particular their son, Thomas, has improved immensely. When they first came to camp they were all able to share a court; now the family is together at times, but often spread across three courts in clinics.” When asked what keeps their family returning to a Cliff Drysdale Tennis resorts again and again, Fay

mentioned the familiarity amongst the staff as a key highlight. “The coaches always remember us,” she said. They continue to use Cliff Drysdale Tennis when reserving tennis vacations for help with lodging and all resort activities. After numerous trips with CDT, the Fernandez family is one of the most traveled groups reaching both the East and West Coast playing tennis. With the list of CDT resorts continuing to grow, hopefully the Fernandez’s will travel with us again and continue to explore while incorporating tennis in their vacations. “In the digital age that we live in, it’s great to see a family playing together and spending their vacation time together,” said Colebourne. For the Fernandez family as well as any and all alumni campers, come and enjoy a tennis vacation with us again soon, you are always welcome back and we would love to see you again at any of our locations!

“The resort’s comprehensive renovation was an opportunity for us to enhance every aspect of the resort experience, and we are excited to be partnering with an internationally renowned management company at the forefront of tennis to transform the tennis experience at Rosewood Bermuda,” said Paul Telford, managing director of Rosewood Bermuda. “As the first partnership of its kind on Bermuda, this will not only enhance the tennis experience at Rosewood Bermuda, but will also elevate Bermuda as a larger tennis destination.”

Cliff Drysdale Tennis will manage Rosewood Bermuda’s renowned tennis facilities and reimagine the resort’s tennis program. Experienced members and tennis-loving guests will enjoy the program’s diverse array of customized offerings including adult and junior programs, private and semi-private tennis lessons, day camps, social events and leagues. “Our partnership with Rosewood Bermuda is exciting on many fronts,” said Scott Colebourne, Chief Operations Office for Cliff Drysdale Tennis. “The great facilities and incredible location will allow for the ultimate tennis experience for both local players and resort guests. We’re ready to make Bermuda a premier tennis destination.” The resort’s new tennis program is led by Yana Orlova, the newly appointed Director of Tennis. An accomplished player who has competed professionally on the ITF Pro Circuit, Orlova brings a wealth of tennis playing, coaching and management experience to the resort. Before joining Rosewood Bermuda, Orlova served in key roles at

multiple CDT-managed locations, including Stratton Mountain Resort and the Omni Amelia Island Plantation where she oversaw a successful adult program and customized tennis travel packages for resort guests. Rosewood Bermuda is pleased that Orlova is joined by local Bermudian Ashley Brooks, who will serve as a Tennis Professional. In this role, Brooks will facilitate tennis lessons, day camps and clinics that foster guests’ passion for the sport. Brooks previously worked at Rosewood Bermuda as a guest tennis professional before joining the team in a full-time capacity. This partnership builds upon the existing relationship between Cliff Drysdale Tennis and Gencom, the Miami, Florida-based investment firm that recently acquired Rosewood Bermuda. Gencom has successfully launched partnerships with Cliff Drysdale Tennis at two of its existing properties. The partnership between Rosewood Bermuda and Cliff Drysdale Tennis will be the first of its kind on the island of Bermuda.
