A Letter From The Editors Helping Others Along the Way As you read through our latest edition you will see that giving back comes in many forms. In my formative years, I learned to work very hard to achieve my goals; however, sometimes it wasn’t enough. A small offer of assistance may be “small” to the giver, but can be life changing to the recipient. Giving back has many faces, but what it all boils down to is belief. When very special people along my way offered me a hand-up, it was the thought that gave me the boost. It was the mere fact that they believed in me. I have never forgotten those who have stood by me. In fact, those people have become my inspiration not only to achieve specific goals, but to become a better person.

Giving Back Through Tennis Every time I watch, teach, or play tennis, I am overwhelmed with so many emotions. The one that Katie Steck always sticks out though is gratitude. Tennis has Managing Editor given me so much to be thankful for. It has provided me an active lifestyle, a competitive spirit, lasting friendships, and a robust career. The many blessings I have been afforded through tennis inspire me to grow and spread the joys of the game we all love. Tennis provides ample opportunities to pay it forward. Through personal experience, I have found that coaching, whether in a professional or personal environment, is the best, simplest way to cultivate the game amongst the youth. There is no special formula to determine when, where or how to give back, but being involved in tennis is a great place to start. For the entire tennis community, it is imperative that we encourage more people to join and play the sport we all love so much. I am proud to say that at Cliff Drysdale Tennis, we focus on how to give back to tennis and find innovative and exciting ways to spread the love of the game. We strive to give back to the communities where our clubs are located. Our hope is that all of our members and guests leave every experience with us feeling inspired and full of gratitude, which is the base for paying it forward. It is the love we share for the game and all who play that drives everything we do here at Cliff Drysdale Tennis.

of gifting, local grass roots efforts, environmental improvements, charity and business, and much more. I hope you enjoy this glimpse into the softer side of tennis and are inspired to get involved…after all, the ball is always in your court when it comes to giving!

Finding Your Passion

Joey Hanf Managing Editor

As we embarked on this journey of completing the July issue of EXPERIENCE Magazine, I was constantly reminded of how many different ways tennis has given back in my life.

While sitting down with Andy Roddick for our cover story, we discussed not only the mission of his foundation, but also how tennis changed his life. At 12 years old, Roddick found something he was passionate about: tennis. He wasn’t great at school, but when he got to the court he felt like he belonged. That moment, he said, is what he hopes every child can experience. And the more Roddick spoke on the subject, the more I came to realize how lucky we are to live and chase our passion in the world of tennis. The sport gave me the opportunity and motivation to work harder. I definitely wasn’t the most talented player. I wasn’t the best writer either. But I loved talking about tennis. I loved watching tennis. And this propelled me to want to pursue a career in tennis in whatever capacity possible. As you read through this magazine, you’ll find countless stories of individuals who have impacted others through the sport of tennis. You’ll likely find that these stories are extremely relatable and relevant to your life. There aren’t many communities that are more tight-knit than tennis. Let’s appreciate what we have, and look for ways to involve more people in this great sport.

Cliff Notes

Cliff Notes Being Your Best

Thinking Forward

Lars Ulrich, famed Metallica drummer, has a father from whom I learned a lot. Torben and I played doubles together on Centre Court at Wimbledon, but it was the truth-seeking conversation beyond center court that I remember best.

There is a new wind blowing in the tennis world. A recognition that the sport has to change to compete in the modern age with other new and traditional sports that are constantly evolving to make their product more appealing to viewers and fans.

Among the topics was his firm belief that great tennis players, like accomplished artists in any field, owed only their own talents to the world. The beauty of a great performance gives back by bringing millions joy, awe and uplift. The cliché of being the best you can be relates to the world’s best in the same way it relates to you and your game.

Federer’s Resurgence

The ATP is experimenting with scoring changes to promote more frequent crisis moments. The ITF, traditionally so slow to change, is seriously discussing Davis Cup improvements like three sets matches. ESPN is spearheading proposals to guide the game in ways to make it more watchable for the average fan not just the dedicated tennis viewer. Tennis has up to now been so much slower to innovate than its competition.

The Federer phenomenon with his spectacular rise this year was not a surprise to me.

One Common Goal

A forced injury layoff like his is not a bad thing. The juices flow more vigorously and with renewed energy when you take a break from the pressure and tension of daily intense competition. His ability quotient never wavered. Even when he wasn’t winning he was always in the hunt. Then the age thing is way overblown. Don’t forget that Ken Rosewall was in his 40th year when he played the final of Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Connors was about the same age when he made that unforgettable run to the semis of the U.S. Open in New York. Agassi won more majors in his mature years than in the times when you are supposed to be at your best. These days players are generally playing even longer.

One of the fundamental problems for the game is its complicated organizational structure. There is no commissioner. No leader. Too many cooks all protecting their own narrow interests. What the game needs at the very least is an annual gathering of all big interested parties to address just one topic:

What can we do to make tennis more compelling for viewers and spectators?

Federer has more years left in him. So does Rafael Nadal for the same reasons. That’s great for tennis’ sake.

Eco-Friendly Tennis Coming to a Court Near You

By Rick Limpert Recycling isn’t just the right thing to do, but in tennis? It’s actually something that can help not only your business’ bottom line, but serve as motivation to get your members and players focused on a common goal on and off the court. Tennis is becoming environmentally friendly, and if you recycle things like cans, glass, paper and other materials as a habit, that means there’s an opportunity to help the environment and grow the sport of tennis in a different way than everyone is talking about. We can do our part, but it’s with the help of some forward thinking companies that are taking eco friendly tennis to a new level.

What We Can Do Have your club or public facility create a recycling program and track the results to show that you’re producing less waste. Recycling cans and water bottles is just a start as you can potentially work with your waste management service to negotiate a lower fee, saving your business money.

What Others are Doing HYDRO COURT Your clay or Har-Tru tennis court is only as good as your irrigation and watering system. Water keeps a court firm; gives it a rich, dark color, while ensuring stable footing and consistent bounces for players. The vast majority of new courts are installed with sub-surface irrigation. HydroCourt sub-surface irrigation systems have been proven to reduce court expenses and simplify daily maintenance in all climates. HydroCourt watering systems are in use at most Cliff Drysdale Tennis managed facilities in Florida. HydroCourt is a self-regulating system that is fully adjustable to player preference and designed to water your Har-Tru tennis court from below the surface. Constructed with six individually controlled cells, the HydroCourt system makes sure each cell is monitored by a separate waterfilled control box. Water enters the control box and flows through pipes to cells lined with a chemical-resistant 20 mm thick liner. When the water

level in the control box rises, the water level under the court also rises. The amount of moisture in the court surface is controlled by adjusting the water level in the control box up or down. HydroCourt can save up to 60% of water usage when compared to conventional irrigation.

LED COURT LIGHTING Much like the LED lights we are now using in our own homes, LED court lighting offers several advantages for tennis facilities and players. LEDs are made with epoxy lenses, not glass, and are much more resistant to breakage. They are also 100% recyclable and give off almost no UV emissions. They work equally well in high and low temperatures and can be dimmed, resulting in a dynamic control of light, color and distribution. Jake Baranowski, Director of Tennis, Tyler Athletic & Swim Club, established in 1965, is seeing the benefits of new LED lighting firsthand. “What I can tell you is that the lights

are plenty of big benefits, but one is that they require no warmup time. They turn on in a snap and because they are LED, they require much less energy than the traditional lighting setup. Also, some lights do a fine job brightening the playing area, but these lights really bring out the yellowness of the tennis ball that make it easier to play at night.”

Your old tennis shoes may be of some use. Reuse-A-Shoe collects worn out athletic shoes and salvages materials to make Grind, which is composed of nearly every part of an old running shoe: rubber from the outsole, foam from the midsole and fabric from the upper. Grind also contains pre-consumer material including manufacturing scraps and shoes with manufacturing defects. The old shoes are reborn into sports and recreation surfaces around the world. Think playgrounds or even rubber 10 & Under tennis courts.

Millions of tennis balls are discarded into landfills each year. The balls decompose very slowly and take up space in these garbage dumps. Since 2013, Project Green Ball has been working with Ace Surfaces, Advanced Polymer Technologies, ECORE International, and HABU to develop cushioned mats with dead tennis balls for tennis court surfaces. Collected balls have also been turned into equestrian turf for people

HEAD is the first sporting goods company to monitor its carbon responsibility.

REPURPOSING TENNIS STRING While most tennis string can be recycled due to it having different polymer and filaments within the string, some tennis players are repurposing the remnants of broken tennis strings and the leftover strands that stringers would typically throw away. Creative tennis types are using the old strings on luggage as a way to identify their bags. Others are using the bundles of strings for cushioning packages they mail, instead of foam peanuts or airbags, which are less friendly for the environment.

PROJECT GREEN BALL Where do all those old tennis balls go? Project Green Ball is a tax exempt, nonprofit, sustainability initiative to coordinate recycling programs for used tennis balls. These recycling programs, some of which result in the donations of recycled balls to organizations servicing people with disabilities or life threatening diseases, are paramount to keeping tennis “green.”

the effects of carbon emissions is an important part of why we’re doing this,” says HEAD NV CEO Johan Eliasch. “We all depend on a stable climate to ski, play tennis, or dive. If we don’t wake up and make a difference now, we won’t be doing these things in their natural environments much longer.”

COOL EARTH Since 2007, HEAD has partnered with the global environmental charity, Cool Earth, which fights climate change by protecting endangered rainforests. HEAD’s leadership has helped preserve rainforests which lock up atmospheric carbon in their vegetation to the tune of 150 tons of carbon per half-acre. Many believe that reducing rain-forest destruction is the first step in tackling climate change.

Even for tennis players, the environmental benefits of recycling can’t be overstated. Of course, saving money is part of the equation for your business. Over time, recycling can help to conserve materials and energy, which can have an impact on bigger markets and potentially even make some of those materials and energy sources more cost effective for everyone.

GIVING BACK:

ANDY RODDICK

By Joey Hanf Photo Credit: The AR Foundation

Andy Roddick is set to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame on July 22nd, 2017 in Newport, Rhode Island. Roddick led the charge for American tennis for virtually a decade, both on and off the court. EXPERIENCE Magazine sat down with Roddick for an exclusive interview ahead of the Opportunity Matters Luncheon, hosted by the Andy Roddick Foundation. The longtime Austin, Texas resident opened up on the inspiration to start his foundation, how tennis changed his life, the upcoming hall of fame induction and much more. 16

Inspired by an Idol

Through high-quality afterschool activities as well as an acclaimed sixweek summer program, the foundation provides children with opportunities at periods when they are typically most at risk and falling behind.

It was 30,000 feet in the air when a switch was flipped for Andy Roddick. On a flight home from an intense training week with Andre Agassi, the then 17 year old and relative unknown Roddick had 20 minutes to ask rapid fire questions to his idol. “I asked him a very loaded question that I didn’t know was a loaded question at the time,” Roddick said.

He asked what Agassi’s biggest regret was during his career. Agassi answered definitively that it was not starting his foundation earlier. “Coming from a hero and someone who you feel had it all figured out at that point in his life, and was such a huge presence in the non-profit charter school space in Las Vegas...it made an impact,” Roddick said.

wasn’t that impressive, but it was a start.”

The Mission: Expand Opportunities The mission of the Andy Roddick Foundation is to “expand opportunities for young people to learn, thrive and succeed.” Roddick, a long-time resident of Austin, Texas, and his team are focused on helping underprivileged Central-Texas communities.

At just 18 years old, before any of his major successes on court, Roddick launched the Andy Roddick Foundation(ARF).

“I was good at tennis, it improved my self esteem and gave me a place to go,” Roddick said. “I would leave school where I was a little shy. I was always small. Then I’d go to tennis where all of a sudden I was good. It makes a big difference.” Creating these moments is what ARF aims to do. Although Roddick admits he loves to go out and play games with the children, tennis is not at all what the foundation is centered around. “My thing doesn’t have to be their thing, but we want to expose them; create a base level with our programs and then expose them to as much as possible,” Roddick said.

Trying to make a name for yourself in a sport where Americans not only succeeded, but were expected to succeed is a hard enough task on its own. Launching a philanthropic effort in addition to your full-time career was never going to be an easy task. “We had a clinic in a parking lot which raised I don’t even know how much,” Roddick said. “It

Sportsmanship & CDT By Katie Steck Many juniors watch the professional circuit. Besides watching the hoisting of championship trophies, juniors are exposed to the best players in the world smashing rackets, yelling at officials, and cursing in frustration. This, combined with the increasing pressures junior players face on and off the court, has resulted in this type of behavior increase at junior tournaments. Fortunately, Cliff Drysdale Tennis has junior players like Sahil Arora, Conner Hawkings, Alexandra Koulisis, and Bella Connerley-Ravanello who understand

the importance of displaying sportsmanship. Cliff Drysdale Tennis believes strongly in the importance of good sportsmanship in making tennis more enjoyable for all. Bella ConnerleyRavanello, a junior from In-Shape Rancho Solano, defines sportsmanship as “giving your best while also respecting your opponents.” Our coaches at clubs across the country stress the importance of sportsmanship as highly as the development of strokes and strategy. These individuals, who “do not respect their opponents, make bad line calls, and break their rackets,” spoil the tournament experience for the rest of the players and parents who follow the rules. “Sahil is very mature for his age, and he understands the importance of developing

control and respect for others is often an indicator that a junior player is developing a strong mental game. Alexandra Koulisis, a junior player from Bluewater Bay Tennis Center, understands that sportsmanship creates a positive attitude, and “when I have good attitude, I play better and have more fun.” The positive re-enforcement of sportsmanship cannot stop when junior players leave their lessons. Players, parents, and coaches all share the responsibility in ensuring that good sportsmanship is a fundamental part of competition- regardless of one’s level and regardless of winning or losing. Parents must create an encouraging environment and set a positive example too.

as an athlete, but also, developing as a wellrespected kid and young man,“ said coach Rob Lowe at Grove Isle Tennis Center. “Tournaments and competition for Sahil were never about the wins or losses. He always congratulates his opponents. If he lost, [he] would ask them to play again because he strives to improve and loves the fun in competition.” Conner Hawkins from Bluewater Bay Tennis Center told his coach, Director Gary Bertoldo, that he “always tries to play fair, and in return, I hope that my opponents see this and also play fair.” But in today’s tournaments, it is hard to guarantee opponents will play fair. The nature of the sport gives the responsibility to one player to make or miss a shot. It also gives them control to call their own lines, certainly making it difficult for juniors to handle the pressure, but that does not make the behavior acceptable. It is no secret that to be successful in tennis, one must have a solid mental game. Displaying self-

HOW TENNIS GUIDED MY LIFE By John Newcombe

John at the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels, TX.

I was nine and a half years old, it was December 1953 Sydney Australia, and I was crouched by the radio for day four of the 1953 Davis Cup final between Australia and the United States being played in Melbourne at the Kooyong Tennis Stadium in front of 18,000 people. Television had not yet come to Australia, but radio sets were turned on throughout the Country.

The next year I listened to Rosewall losing the Wimbledon final in July and in December my Dad took me to the Davis Cup finals in Sydney at the White City Stadium in front of 26,000 people, again the opponents were the United States who this time won 4-1. Now I knew in my head and heart I was destined to be at Wimbledon and play Davis Cup. Little did I realize that in 1970 I would play Ken Rosewall in the Wimbledon final. This was not all idle dreaming as I had won all my age group tournaments and the talk was that I could become one of our next group of champions.

Six years later I had graduated from High School a year early and was selected in the 1961 Nineteen year old Lew Hoad and men’s team for a seven months Ken Rosewall were representing trip around the world to all the Australia in their first ever major tournaments. I dropped her back at her parents house, came back to my hotel room and woke up my room mate Owen Davidson to tell him I just went out with the girl I was going to marry. That happened in February 1966 and we are still married today with a son, two daughters and six grandkids. In February 1968 Angie and I traveled to San Antonio, Texas to look at a run down 200 acre dude ranch which two Texas friends Clarence Mabry and Jack Turpin were converting into a Tennis Ranch. I had won the Wimbledon and U.S. singles titles the year before, Angie and I were expecting our first child in August, and Clarence knew I was looking to create a home away from home. HEAD INTRODUCES NEW MXG RACQUET SERIES By HEAD Penn Racquet Sports

What are you looking for in a tennis racquet? Most players are looking for either power or control. But what if you wanted both? In the past, players could only find racquets that offered either Power or Control until today. HEAD’s new revolutionary technology, MxG, offers both Power and Control in one racquet. MxG is designed like no other. MxG is the fusion of Magnesium and Graphene Touch that offers you a balance of power and control like no other racquet. MxG’s injection molded Magnesium Bridge is precision formed and provides ultimate stability at a very low weight. The Magnesium Bridge is specially designed for longer free moving main strings, which provide a much larger sweet spot for more power. The Next European Invasion: Synthetic Red Clay Tennis Courts

The tennis court you are playing on today may not be the tennis court you are playing on tomorrow. HarTru is the clay court of choice on the east coast, throughout the south and in the midwest. Although natural red clay courts are still being played on at many clubs. Hitting With Heart: Megan Tierney of Louise & Eleanor By Kimberly Arena

The EXPERIENCE Team recently sat down with Megan Tierney, founder and CEO of LOUISE & ELEANOR, an LA and Miami based women’s luxury fashion company with a mission to create a community of women supporting and encouraging each other. Megan’s story on and off the tennis court and her drive to better the lives of others through her business is an inspiring glimpse into the act and art of giving back. Growing up on the San Francisco Peninsula, Megan played competitive tennis. She was ranked #1 in doubles in Northern California, and in the top 150 in the U.S. in singles. Megan graduated from Weil Tennis Academy with honors and received the Diamond Award as the school’s Outstanding Senior. Megan began her professional career as a commercial leasing agent and marketing associate, overseeing more than a million square feet of space. In 2008, Megan co-founded Bizcasts, directing the company’s mission and eventually selling her shares to her co-founder. In 2015, Megan followed her dream with the creation of Louise & Eleanor. In addition to overseeing the operations at Louise & Eleanor, Megan consults for a fashion company which curates it’s clothing from Paris, recently invested in a tech start up and is the author of the book, Best Wishes. 42

EXPERIENCE: How did you get your start in tennis? What did the early years look like? Megan Tierney: My Dad got me started when I saw about 7. He wanted me to learn new skills, how to compete, and how to be able to win and lose. My first tournament was at 9 years old and from there, much of my early life was spent on a tennis court, practicing and hitting tennis balls. I spent my weekends at local and national tournaments and then trained and graduated from the Weil Tennis Academy in Ojai, California. Although I’ve been lucky to have had the opportunity to work with and learn from amazing coaches, I attribute my success in tennis to my Dad. Whenever I’m visiting my family, my Dad and I play a match together. Luckily, I can still take an extra game from him but hopefully he won’t read this and start practicing more! Frances Tiafoe is a 19 year old American rising star from Hyattsville, Maryland. He broke the top 100 as just an 18 year old. He achieved numerous feats as a Junior, including wins at the U.S. Boys 18 and Under National Championships in Kalamazoo as well as the prestigious Orange Bowl International championship. Tiafoe has an electric game; his athleticism and firepower draw large crowds and audiences. He has garnered praise from many in the sport as having the potential to be an elite player. He was also a feature player in Cliff Drysdale Tennis’ Tennis with the Stars in 2017. OrthoNOW

Orthopedic Urgent Care

Dr. Badia helps to bridge the gap between improper orthopedic treatment and urgent care facilities.

In 2010, two visionaries saw a major problem in the health care industry and decided to give it a solution. Internationally renowned hand and upper extremity surgeon, Dr. Alejandro Badia, and Wharton Alumni and Financial Industry expert, Justin Irizarry, had experienced the effects of improper orthopedic treatment, and knew that something needed to be done. From a patient side, Mr. Irizarry understood the necessity for specialized orthopedic treatment far too well, since he was a four-year scholar athlete as the starting center fielder 54

on Cornell’s NCAA Division I Baseball team. Meanwhile, from a clinical side, Dr. Badia had grown frustrated with the traditional health care delivery method, where patients got to an emergency room, receiving an initial consult and often, after unnecessary and costly tests, were referred to a specialist such as himself. The issue was clear for both of them, and so was the solution; that’s when they founded OrthoNOW. OrthoNOW opened its doors as a specialized walk-in orthopedic urgent care center for the assessment and treatment

of a range of orthopedic and sports injuries. Today, the concept has transformed from a 3,000-square foot center in Doral, to the nation’s only orthopedic urgent care franchise. With multiple locations open in South Florida and Georgia, OrthoNOW continues to expand and provide treatment to all injuries related to the foot, ankle, knee, hip, wrist, hand, elbow, shoulder and spine. Additionally, the specialists also treat chronic conditions, and provide consultations regarding preventative protocols. Every

OrthoNOW has digital imaging equipment and offers the latest techniques and treatments by a team of orthopedic experts and orthopedic specialized ancillary providers. For many years sustaining an orthopedic injury meant having to visit the emergency room and wait hours; OrthoNOW prides itself in treating patients in 80 minutes or less and providing unmatched service to all its patients.

Dr. Alejandro Badia

“Too often are patients referred to me with an injury that has worsened because it didn’t have the proper attention early on. Patients waste a lot of time and money seeing general doctors when what they need is a specialist” – Dr. Alejandro Badia source. He’s treated a great deal of professional tennis players including but not limited to, Francesca Schiavione, Sania Mirza, Giovanni Lapentti and Juan Martin del Potro in addition to others. Additionally, he has traveled the world to speak on issues pertaining to professional athletes. In 2014, he was an invited speaker to the Argentinian Society for Surgery of the Hand Sports Symposium in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he spoke about Wrist Injuries in Tennis Players. The next year, Dr. Badia was invited to speak at the 14th STMS World Tennis Medicine Congress in Rome, Italy, where he presented on Wrist Injuries in High Level Tennis Athletes. Most recently, Dr. Badia was one of the writers for a book on Tennis Medicine, where he discussed minimally invasive treatments of the wrist and hand lesions in elite tennis players.

With over 20 years of experience as an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Alejandro Badia is a veteran when it comes to treating sports injuries. Educated at Cornell and New York University (NYU), trained in orthopedics at Bellevue Hospital/NYU Medical Center, a hand/microsurgery fellowship in Pittsburgh and trauma fellowship in Germany, Badia has become one of the leading experts in his field.  He served as the worldwide president of the International Society for Sport Traumatology of the Hand (ISSPORTH) and cofounded the world-renowned Miami Anatomical Research April 2017, OrthoNOW and Training Center (M.A.R.C.) In and The Surgery Center, both became the official medical partner of Cliff Drysdale Tennis. located at Doral.  As part of the partnership, As a hand and upper extremity OrthoNOW will provide medical surgeon, Dr. Badia has had a and educational support for notable history with tennis, all Cliff Drysdale instructors as both a clinician and expert and players. Additionally,

an OrthoNOW WellBeing Corporate Program will be offered to all Cliff Drysdale Experience members to keep and improve a healthy lifestyle and athletic performance.
