TENNIS TRIUMPHS AND LOSSES Experiencing one of the most comprehensive and tragic health crises in a century, combined with an angry, polarized and violent social and political climate has left me with one certain conclusion: the world will never be the same. Fear of the unknown can be paralyzing, and I admit I’ve struggled with finding the positives amidst such drastic change. My hope is that enough of us are listening, learning, caring for one another and seeking personal growth as an outcome to these trying times. Despite quarantines, cancelled tournaments and events and countless tennis court shutdowns during stay at home orders, this sport has been my ray of hope through the last 4 months. Tennis has kept me and my team employed despite a crashing economy. Tennis has provided me with a safe way to be outside, stay fit and have fun with friends and family during a devastating pandemic. Perhaps the most paramount, tennis has provided a global voice in bringing more awareness to systemic racism, inequality and injustice. Frances Tiafoe, Serena Williams, Coco Gauff and many other professional players of color literally brought me to tears with their “Racquet down, hands up” movement as they expressed support for the Black Lives Matter cause and to highlight peaceful protests. I have never been so proud of our industry. All that said, pro tennis players, like the rest of us, are not immune to questionable decisions and mistakes. Not only did Djokovic’s Adria Tour not require social distancing safety measures, but did so on a public stage which many would say indicates they do not take the pandemic seriously and in turn influences others. The result of their reckless actions are a number of ATP players testing positive for COVID-19, including the world number one and head of the ATP players council himself. Will this serious misstep cause the US Open to change course and cancel their modified format tournament along with the rest of the fall season? During a time when each day seems to hand us another curveball, it seems like a looming possibility… What the future holds for the health and wellbeing of all our citizens, the economy, and the sport of tennis is unknown, but I remain hopeful and cautiously optimistic. I ask that you all embrace that same sense of hope. Take care of each other, and remember actions speak louder than words. Listen and learn from those that struggle and are asking for help. And most definitely get outside and play some safe, socially distanced tennis to keep your optimism and spirits high.

CELEBRATE THE PRIVILEGE

Katie Steck Managing Editor

Playing tennis is a privilege I, and many of our readers, have become so accustomed to that we fail to recognize it for what it is: freedom. It’s the freedom to get outside; it’s the freedom to feel the sweet spot on that perfect shot; it’s the freedom to see hard work and training come together seamlessly; it’s the freedom to experience pure enjoyment on the court with family, friends, and teammates.

forced break from the courts as a way to deepen their off-court training through online coaching, strength training, and even meal prep. Coco Gauff and Francis Tiafoe and many other pro players have pushed us to stand up for the rights of our friends and fellow tennis enthusiasts. These stories and actions, regardless of the platform given, resonate with the Cliff Drysdale Tennis family to our core.

At a time when so many freedoms are taken for granted, I am honored to work at an organization that seeks to amplify stories that inspire action on and off the court. In the midst of a global pandemic and with the world addressing systemic racism, players have found new ways to find inspiration in the sport we all love so much. Roger Federer and Andy Murray have entertained us with volley challenges. Our members and guests have taken the

In this issue of Experience, we highlight stories that remind us of the freedoms we must collectively continue to fight for and embrace. We celebrate Gael Monfils’s story as an international symbol for what the ‘freedom to play’ really means. Our hope for each of you is that you celebrate and acknowledge the privilege, the freedom you have every time you step on a court - no matter if it is in your driveway or at one of our world-renowned facilities.

LEARN OR BE LEFT BEHIND There’s plenty of debate to be had around the general health of the internet and the larger digital media world. You can be buried in the rabbit hole of a conspiracy theory, or get caught looking at your screen for way too many hours of the day. But one undeniable fact about social media is that stories and information are widely available, regardless of who you are or where you are from. Joey Hanf Managing Editor

That has proven to be crucial amid the COVID-19 pandemic, as businesses that have failed to adapt are being left behind. Communication has gone digital, and every business, no less tennis clubs, must communicate on new media platforms with their audience of players and prospective players. It feels obvious that at this point, but taking extra precautions and being clear about new safety measures is a must. We’ve seen what happens when those precautions aren’t taken seriously; Novak Djokovic’s Adria Tour in Eastern Europe ignored all social distancing guidelines and led to positive tests for at least five ATP players, including world no. 1 Djokovic himself. If we are hoping to recover from

this pandemic and open back up, there is no excuse for not taking this seriously. I hold the same sentiment for progress with the Black Lives Matter movement. Tough conversations need to be had, and our new digital landscape allows that to happen. If you remain in your tight-knit circle, you’ll never learn new perspectives or experiences. What social media has done is exposed and educated the masses on the issues our country faces and has faced for centuries. Education is a crucial step in leading to change, regardless of your political position. Millions of Americans and people around the world have experienced hardship over the last few months, and it’s easy to feel negative about where things are headed. My plea for everyone is to see the good that has come from these immense challenges we’ve faced. Being hopeful is one of the best ways to influence your friends, family and colleagues. Stay strong, stay hopeful, and stay safe everyone.

FROM THE DESK of DON HENDERSON

A BRIG H T E R F U T U R E As I look back on my piece from the January Issue of Experience Magazine, it’s pretty amazing to think about how long these last six months have really felt. As a company, just like the rest of the world, we took a big hit amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly all of our locations closed at one point, and there were a lot of questions we didn’t have the answers to. I’m proud of the way we rebounded, with a lot of help from our friends at Troon, and I’m cautiously optimistic about the future. It’s hard to imagine, but this pandemic has given tennis one its best opportunities in many years. Various experts and epidemiologists agree that tennis is one of the safest sports in the world to play right now. Being outside is a luxury these days, and tennis is the most obviously natural social distancing sport. Players can take even more precaution by marking their initials on the tennis balls and only touching their own set. Our clubs have taken even more precautions to make sure that members, guests and employees are safe. If more people are looking for things to do outside, and tennis is proven to be one of the safest options, how do we capture this moment? We have to deliver an experience that makes people fall in love with the sport. And who delivers that experience? Tennis professionals. While so much has changed, what remains the same is the need for our industry to not only recruit more pros, but also elevate the standard of teaching.

Tennis clubs and organizations also need to be innovative in their programming; we can’t just go back to what we’ve been doing. Encourage more beginner clinics and lessons, create retail specials so new players can buy a racquet, and make online booking easy. Hire a tennis coordinator to organize daily matches for your members. Provide value beyond just acces to your facility. We’ve been able to make these changes even at some of our most successful and stubborn facilities. A few days or even weeks of adjusting to a new, streamlined platform will pay huge dividends in the long-term. Clubs with membership need to be creative in the way they provide value. Communication is more important than ever, and we have implemented new and improved ways to engage with our members more effectively. Keeping tennis at the top of mind is the first step in getting more players out to the court. I’m encouraged by the USTA’s recent restructuring to put more emphasis and resources on participation and pro development. They have gone from a almost a dozen separate departments into just three main verticals, with a priority on Community Tennis. There has been a lot of talk of change in recent years, but new CEO Michael Dowse seems to be following through in a big way. I hope that everyone reading stays safe, continues to weather this challenging period, and looks forward to what could be an even brighter future for tennis in the years ahead.

CHALLENGES CREATE OPPORTUNITY Welcome to another issue of Experience Magazine, and hopefully many of you have had a warm welcome back to the tennis court in recent weeks. I want to send my best wishes of health and wellness to everyone; the future is uncertain, but I am encouraged by what our industry has shown in our fight against this pandemic. First and foremost, I am happy that the USTA will be able to host the U.S. Open this fall, albeit with many changes to keep players safe. With no fans in the stands, it’s time to experiment with new ways to engage viewers. Maybe ambient background sound like a laugh track for comedies? Golf is naturally more subdued, but spectatorless golf has not taken much away from the ambiance of the event. More access to players like on court interviews after sets? Announcers much closer to the action? Hear more from players’ natural reactions? How will players react to reduced sizes of their entourages? March back in time to the days of no coaches, masseurs, agents, physios,

12

stringers, psychologists, and hitting partners. It should make things more unpredictable, which is a good thing for all parties. How will players return after an extended break? This could be one of the most exciting tournaments in years. There is always a participation spike during and after the majors and I am quite certain there is pent up fever among our lifestyle players. Tennis programming and culture must return with vigor to capitalize on this opportunity. I’m pleased that the USTA has reorganized to focus its efforts on increased participation. We should recognize that the pied pipers of the sport are the teaching pros. I have very high hopes for this investment in the teaching industry and the recognition that this is where the future lies. Finally, it is hard to imagine a better sport than tennis for social distancing and general health. This is an opportunity for us all to spread the good word and encourage new players to play tennis. Communication in a quarantined world has become more crucial than ever, and I hope you all continue to tune in to some of my favorite outlets like the EXPERIENCE weekly newsletter, Tennis.com and Inside Tennis.

...an opportunity to make tennis stronger Stadiums like this at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden were empty this March as the tournament was cancelled just 3 days before the tournament began.

A NEW OPPONENT

How COVID-19 Impacted Professional Tennis By Joey Hanf Sunday, March 8th feels like an eternity ago. It’s only been a few months, but so much has changed in the world, in tennis, and in my life since that day. I arrived at LAX airport and drove with my colleagues into the Coachella Valley in preparation for another great Indian Wells trip. It’s always my favorite week of the year, as I’m able to teach tennis in the morning before heading over to the tournament and enjoying the action. Scheduled to start on Monday, the BNP Paribas Open had already announced that it would be be offering refunds to all fans who wanted one. COVID-19 had slowly began making an impact in the United States, but no major sporting events had been cancelled. Nearly every player had arrived in Indian Wells, practicing and enjoying the great spring weather in the desert.

22

After a busy day of prepping for one of our company’s biggest events, Tennis With The Stars, I stopped by the Indian Wells Tennis Garden to grab my credential. Things were a little quiet, but nothing out of the ordinary. As we drove back to our rental house for the week, I saw a media announcement email from the tournament. An email at 6pm on Sunday? There’s no way this was going to be good news. The tournament was officially cancelled, which was just the first of many hard hits that COVID-19 has had on professional tennis. It left almost everyone stunned and unsure of what was next. “The overall vibe is pretty weird,” said Belinda Bencic, a top 10 WTA player. “Obviously before the tournament, you’re really nervous and excited and you kind of can’t wait to start. And now, this excitement kind of fell down and everyone is too relaxed, I would say.”

EXPERIENCE Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

Players were unsure of what would happen next, so many stayed in the area to practice before the expected next tournament. But as we know now, there was no next tournament. In fact, official competition has been cancelled through August, leaving tennis players with little to no options. With strict quarantines and self-isolation in place across the world, tennis players finally experienced something that most people were already used to; being at home for an extended period of time. For all but about 2 months per year, tennis players are getting on a plane every single week travelling to the next tournament. It’s been a change that has left some lost, and others inspired. “I’m planning on going to an art gallery to see a few artists that I really wanted to see,” top American pro Reilly Opelka told Racquet Magazine. “And I’m also planning on going to L.A., there’s another artist there that’s showing. Things that I usually can only do in the month of December, now I get to do throughout the year. And usually in December, it’s vacation and you don’t want to do anything.” Perhaps one of the best things to come from this break from tennis has been the ability of the organizations to come together and work with each other. Quite frankly, the ATP, WTA and ITF have been forced to cooperate to try and salvage a schedule and keep their employees paid. “Tennis United” is the campaign the ATP and WTA have formed to better promote each other’s initiatives. “It probably should have happened a long time ago, but maybe now is really the time,” Roger Federer wrote. “These are tough times in every sport and we can come out of this with two weakened bodies or one stronger body.”

“It probably should have happened a long time ago, but maybe now is really the time,” -Roger Federer

Reilly Opelka has used his time off to purpose passions off the court.

There’s hope that this will be more than just a PR campaign, and actual efforts to unify the sports many organizations can lead to real change in the right direction. The tours have attempted to create a Player Relief fund aimed at compensating lower ranked players, but after appearing close to completion, the effort fell short. And the damage isn’t only for the players; many of the tournaments that have been cancelled bring in revenue, jobs and income for a huge number of individuals. “It’s a tremendous blow,” says Montreal’s tournament director, Eugene Lapierre. “Both tournaments amount for over 90 percent of the revenues we make at Tennis Canada. That’s the complete year down the drain. They are the engine for the development of the game in Canada. That’s how we’re able to do all the programs we do, from school programs all the way up to the National Tennis Center (NTC) and the development of top athletes.” For the USTA, it appears the U.S. Open will be able to salvage something this fall, despite no live audience presence. But in this “new normal”, even a set date for an event is no longer a guarantee. Despite the challenges and hardship it has caused, this pandemic has forced every entity and individual in professional tennis to become nimble. We all have to think about solutions, rather than the status quo. Let’s hope that we haven’t wasted this time, but used it as an opportunity to make tennis stronger.

ELEVATING YOUR TENNIS ROUTINE

By Emilie Moeller

At this article’s inception, our team set out to identify ways to elevate your tennis routine beyond the go-to mix of clinics, lessons, and the like. However, since undergoing a brief hiatus from our favorite sport due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems only appropriate that we also remind ourselves of why we fell in love with the sport in the first place. Perhaps it was seeing the same circle of players each week that fortified some of your greatest club friendships. Or maybe it was taking a lesson with your favorite pro twice a week that made you realize the endless learning opportunities this sport has to offer. For many, the habitual practices in our tennis routines suddenly became traditions we missed the most. With that in mind, we revisited this article under a new goal – to give you fresh ideas to mix up your tennis routine, but to also acknowledge the unique qualities at the heart of this great, social game.

1

3 24

TAKE A LESSON WITH A PRO (OR A NEW PRO) While pros are fantastic for developing your game at the foundational level, a great pro will also go beyond the strokes to maximize your tennis experience – be it through identifying new hitting partners for you, challenging you in new areas of your game, or simply delivering a memorable session on court at each lesson. Trying out new pros won’t necessarily bring you contrasting instruction, but different pros can offer unique perspectives on certain strategies or techniques you might not have previously considered. activities and events.

2

SIGN UP FOR A TOURNAMENT So you’ve taken lessons, tried out a few clinics, and hit with some friends over the weekends – what else is there? If you’re itching for a challenge, or simply a change of scenery to put what you’ve learned into practice, local tournaments are a great way to do both. Even if you’re participating in live-ball hitting at your local club or tennis center, it’s hard to replicate the adrenaline and excitement that comes from putting your strokes to the test in a tournament setting. You’ll likely find yourself recognizing areas of your game that are more of a strength than you realized, or certain shots that tend to crack under pressure. No matter the outcome, tournaments are a great way to challenge yourself, meet other local players, and see your game from a new perspective.

TRY OUT A NEW RACQUET There’s nothing quite like the invigorating feeling that comes from hitting with a brand-new racquet for the first time, and while we can all agree that testing out a new racquet won’t catapult your abilities overnight, it can help you see your game from a new lens. As you focus on the feel, contact, speed and power of your shots while experimenting with a new model, the experience can also help you tune into those aspects of your own game and the strengths and weaknesses within each.

EXPERIENCE Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

Whether improving your endurance level with a heart-pumping spin class or building power and stamina during a weight training session, incorporating complementary workouts to your tennis routine can increase your energy and reduce your risk of injury. Not to mention, you’ll likely find yourself outlasting opponents and upping the intensity (and payoff) of your lessons or clinics- simply by building a stronger fitness foundation.

TURN YOUR LEAST FAVORITE DRILL INTO YOUR FAVORITE DRILL

5

Imagine turning a prominent insecurity into one of your greatest strengths. We have found that a similar concept applies here. Rarely is our least favorite drill the one we are the best at. More often, it is the opposite. While giving your least favorite drill a 180-degree transformation might at first glance sound like a good way to sabotage your tennis routine, dedicating the persistence to hone a particular skill can deliver newfound confidence across your game as a whole.

6

MAKE A VACATION OUT OF YOUR PASSION FOR THE GAME We are slightly biased towards this tip, as we’ve made it our mission at Cliff Drysdale to deliver the #UltimateTennisExperience through unforgettable vacations that celebrate our guests’ love for the sport. How did we get to be so passionate about what we do? We’ve seen time and again the impact a tennis vacation can have on a player’s game. When you return from a vacation and hit the courts at your home club, fresh off the heels of unforgettable memories and new friendships, you’ll find yourself with a newly ignited excitement for the game – and a reminder of why you picked up a racquet in the first place.

KATIE HEIMER By Emilie Moeller Self-dubbed a “true Tylerite,” Katie Heimer’s Tyler, Texas heritage spans generations. “I met my husband Jeff here and we have three girls; Michalah (15), Juliet (10) and Mary Alice (21 months),” Katie explains. “My parents, grandmother, in-laws, bother and his family also live in Tyler!” Katie has been a full-time realtor in Tyler for six years after discovering her passion for cultivating unique, lasting relationships with buyers and sellers. “These clients become friends for life,” Katie shared. “They trust you with one of the biggest financial decisions they will ever make. You learn their story, the reason why they are selling or buying. I consider it a great honor to be chosen to move alongside them.” Manifested in over 250 sold homes and more than $70M in closed Texas real estate, Katie’s passion for her job and her clients is indisputable. No stranger to the area or the Tyler community, it was only a matter of time before Katie and her family scheduled a tour at the nearby Tyler Athletic & Swim Club (TASC). “Jeff and I joined TASC at the very beginning before the pool was even complete. Offering tennis, fitness classes, childcare, swimming and the sports field, it was an easy decision to join!” Katie recounted. “The club also offers Parents’ Night Out, Movies on the Lawn, Dinner at the Club, Net Generation Family Fun Day, and you will usually find a few food trucks parked nearby on a Saturday.”

It wasn’t until March of last year that Katie stumbled upon a flier for the club’s Tennis 101 class, an adult beginner program offered at CDT locations across the country. “In high school I played a few years but I honestly haven’t held a racquet in my hand since then,” Katie pointed out. Nonetheless, after one class she was hooked. “I absolutely fell in love with the sport, the tennis pros and program, and the community of members. I moved through Tennis 101 and onto 201, eventually signing up for the monthly unlimited clinics!” Despite her renewed excitement for the game, Katie shared that Director of Tennis Matthew “Buddha” Coerver played a prominent role in her continued involvement. “[With his] extensive knowledge and great sense of humor, Buddha knows how to pull the best out of each player. He is constantly scheduling fun weekend tennis mixers and keeping us informed of upcoming events the club is hosting.”

These days, Katie participates in three to four clinics a week, along with a few doubles matches with friends in between. 2020 was also Katie’s first year to register with the USTA. “I played on the 3.0 and 3.5 teams and finished with all wins!” Even Katie’s eldest daughter, Michalah, found her footing in TASC tennis. “[Michalah] participated in the Academy program and currently works as a TASC kids summer camp counselor!” Since picking up a racquet over a year ago, Katie’s become no stranger to the question, “Why did you start playing tennis?”

Katie pictured with Director of Tennis, Matthew Coerver and friends.

“Honestly,” Katie shared, “I wanted to do something new! Now, tennis is something that I schedule every week on my calendar and make a priority. I have made new friends, gained clients and have loved this new challenge in my life.” “I have learned that tennis is not just a physical sport, but also a mental one. My goal is to continue to grow and improve. I love the level of professionalism and training that is offered at TASC, and know it will continue to expand my game!” Whether you’ve just discovered your enthusiasm for the sport, or celebrated your passion on the tennis court for years, we recognize that our programs and facilities would be nothing without a community to share our love for this great, social game with. Thank you to Katie and our worldwide CDT family – we couldn’t do it without you!

RELAX AND UNWIND East to West Coast Wine and Tennis Experiences By Katie Steck

Just as fine wine and food are known to bring people together, so too is tennis. So what could be better than playing tennis and sipping wine? In our opinion, nothing. At Cliff Drysdale Tennis we are excited to bring our world-class tennis experience to some of the top wine destinations in the country. Our international staff and facilities from coast-to-coat are guaranteed to ensure you have the most fun on and off the court. Chateau Elan Resort, located in the North Georgia foothills just 45 minutes from Atlanta, offers one of the largest and

most awarded wineries on the East Coast. As you drive towards the resort with Georgia’s signature muscadine grape vines on each side of the road, the iconic winery chateau from the 16th century is the first thing you see. With 300 awards within the last 5 years, Chateau Elan has over 30 wines and produces half a million bottles each year. While the resort offers a wide array of activities such as biking, golf, spa escapes, and of course tennis, the wine tours and tastings are an experience you will not want to miss. Winery tours are offered complimentary for overnight guests, and private tours are also available upon reservation.

Heading to the California Coast, you get to experience another wine and tennis vacation at one of Cliff Drysdale Tennis’s newest destinations, The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara. With lively tennis offerings and a vast exposure of wine, the resort offers a luxurious yet intimate setting. The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara offers a 12,000bottle cellar and unique tasting experiences to guests within the Foley Food and Wine Society Wine Tasting Room. The tasting room is near the front entrance of the resort with a welcoming atmosphere with monthly changing wine tasting experiences. The tasting room provides flights from the society’s tasting partners including Kuleto Estate, Chalk Hill Estate, Sebastiani and Lancaster Estate.

The winery staff take guests on a guided behind-thescenes look at the Winery Vat and production rooms while explaining the entire wine-making process from grape to glass. The tour concludes in the winery cask room surrounded by barrels of aging wine, where you are able to experience a guided tasting with the winemaker himself.

While the resort does not have a winery on property, you are surrounded by the California wine country, and the resort is along the Urban Wine Trail. Downtown Santa Barbara has over 25 tasting rooms where you can enjoy wine lists from local wineries. There is a personal concierge available on site at The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara to schedule private tastings, blending seminars, food and wine pairing exercises and more for guests.

Chateau’s winemaker, Simone Bergese, brings years of expertise from working in wine areas and vineyards all over the world. That experience has allowed Simone to perfect and reinvent techniques for the wines produced at Chateau Elan. Simone’s goal is to create sustainable, healthier, and superior quality wines.

Both tennis programs at Chateau Elan Resort and The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara operate year-round and cater to a full spectrum of players with daily clinics and private lessons. Singles, couples, and groups will all enjoy a tennis vacation set against the backdrop of world-renowned wineries.

Chateau Elan Resort and Winery along with The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara offer a truly a unique, fun, and worthwhile experience.

Everyone has a different reason they play tennis. Maybe you love the competition, the mano a mano battle. For some, tennis is a great workout, the best way to burn calories while having fun. And for most, it’s a way to spend time with great people and form lasting relationships. But what brings everyone together is the addictive nature of tennis; mastering the sport is a never-ending process, regardless of your level of play.

TE C HN I QUE

We certainly wouldn’t be the first to mention the mental aspect of tennis. What makes the technical side of the sport so difficult is that you must convince yourself to try something that feels uncomfortable. There’s no doubt that everyone is looking to improve, but that success might not happen if you focus solely on minute technical changes. Mitch Joyce and I lead our Touring Camp program, which travels around the nation delivering unique and energetic tennis experiences for players at clubs of all kinds. The one common denominator across every player is that when we are enjoying ourselves on court, we are much more likely to improve. So next time you miss that forehand in the bottom of the net, don’t get too upset with yourself, just have a laugh with the players on the other side of the court. Anger and frustration almost never lead to improvement in tennis. One of the best ways to actually start enjoying tennis more often is to make sure that you’re playing in a variety of ways. If all you’re doing is playing matches, you’re probably going to be stressed out and not trying new things on the court. At the same time, if all you’re doing is taking lessons or clinics, you will most likely have a very difficult time putting that same result into a competitive situation. One of the things we love to do in our Touring Camps is create competitive drills that are fast and mimic match situations. This takes a little pressure off, and lets players experiment.

FINDING

Sweet Spot YOUR

Just like anything else, make sure that tennis is an escape, and not always a challenge. Take a day off with your family and just mess around on the court. Hit with your regular tennis partners, but just hit and feel the ball. There’s no exact recipe for mastering tennis, because nobody has ever mastered tennis! As Cliff Drysdale likes to say, improvement is a journey, and that journey will be a lot more enjoyable if you focus on a holistic approach to the sport.

GAEL MONFILS THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED By Joey Hanf

38

EXPERIENCE Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com

Professional Tennis in the modern era has revolutionized the sport in many ways. Players are fitter than ever, nutritionists are ensuring that their bodies are at peak performance, and coaches have started using advanced analytics to get every advantage possible for their players. This new landscape has made the depth of tennis very strong. Players ranked outside the top 100 can compete with the top stars on a weekly basis. But one downside to everyone doing the same thing is that a lot of players have started to look the same, and personalities have become harder to find. Gael Monfils, however, does not prescribe to the modern professional tennis player outline. That, along with incredible talent, athleticism and charisma has made Monfils one of the most entertaining players in the world. Many coaches, former players and tennis “experts” have expressed frustration that Monfils didn’t get as much out of his career as he could have. That’s a popular take, but maybe let’s take a step back and realize what Monfils has done for tennis rather than simply judge players based on their results. And if we are talking about results, being a career top 10 player is certainly nothing to complain about. From his early years on tour, regardless of his opponent, if you made your way to the court Monfils was playing on, there’s no doubt the crowd was packed full. In an era of the Big 3 dominating center courts, Monfils often created immense value for the grounds pass holder. One rather infamous U.S. Open moment, the American crowd was firmly behind the Frenchman despite the fact he was facing off against U.S. #1 John Isner. Men’s tennis in particular has become borderline monotonous in terms of style of play. Grinding from the baseline is impressive, sure. But having the same cross-court rally play out all match doesn’t lead to all that much drama. There is an entirely unique sound when Monfils lines up and puts everything he has into a forehand. He has recorded some of the fastest hit winners of all time. Those shots are usually accompanied and followed by a loud “ALLEZ!” afterwards that gets every single fan out of their seats. The power is breathtaking, but Monfils’ speed is what really sets him apart. Any opponent who considers hitting a drop shop is making a grave mistake, as Monfils gets to literally everything on the court seemingly with ease. He wasn’t the first to make sliding on hard-courts the norm, but he certainly has pushed the boundaries in terms of what’s possible.

What makes Monfils so special though is not only his ability or raw talent, but rather his passion for the game and the emotion he presents on and off the court. What the COVID-19 pandemic showed for everyone in tennis is that we are incredibly lucky to simply have an opportunity to play the sport. Monfils for his entire career stepped on the court everyday with that same joy and purpose. Whether it was the practice court or Arthur Ashe Stadium, there’s no doubt that Monfils found more enjoyment in tennis than most of his peers. Off the court, Monfils has dabbled in a number of hobbies and scenes throughout the years. From breakdancing to DJ-ing, it’s clear that Monfils connects with people of all cultures in a way that most could only hope. Walking into the locker room, it’s obvious that he’s friends with just about everyone he meets, even if they’ve just faced off as opponents on court. Monfils’ ability to adapt and excel was on display during the worldwide lockdown from the Coronavirus, as he quickly found a platform to entertain the public. He started a Twitch livestream channel, and has played video games for an audience of thousands of viewers. No matter what he chooses to do, he does it with passion and joy, and that’s what leads to success. Various coaches throughout his career tried to refine or reform Monfils into what they thought he should be, but they all failed, because what makes the Frenchman so special is the way he plays with freedom and unpredictability. Rather than think about the “what-if”, it’s time for all of us in tennis to realize what Monfils provided to this sport. He brought happiness and personal expression to tennis in a time when many began to all look the same. He inspired a generation of players to embrace the hot-shot and showed everyone how to bring the crowd into a match. From ticket-holders to TV executives and even his fellow competitors, Gael Monfils has been must-watch from the very start. Sooner or later, everyone is going to be paying attention.

TENNIS + COVID By Sal Barbaro, Head Tennis Professional at the Omni Amelia Island Resort

Over the past few months it’s hard to imagine a conversation going more than 3 minutes without the mention of how this pandemic has affected us. Before I go any further, despite how much life has changed I consider myself very fortunate with how my life has been going during the pandemic. I realize through reading and watching the news and hearing the many stories of people from all over, that my situation isn’t nearly as bad as others. I’ve managed to stay healthy and also work at some capacity. When we finally decided to completely shut down tennis at the Omni Amelia Island Resort a few months ago, fear crippled my mind. I had no idea how long I would be out of a job. Now I must admit the first few days were kind of nice. My body was feeling a little weary so a few days rest was exactly what I needed. I live on property, so I am only a few minutes from the courts. For the month that I was furloughed I didn’t step foot on a tennis court, let alone pick up a racquet. The only time I left my place was to get groceries. It was a strange time. I felt so out of a routine. I normally wake up at about 6am and now I found myself waking up at 10 or 11. I was feeling like my days were just wasted. I missed watching sports. The NBA season was cancelled, and I just kept getting notifications on my phone that tennis tournaments weren’t happening. You start binge watching shows. I finally finished Sopranos and somehow managed to stay away from Tiger King! I was working on puzzles, writing songs on guitar, and watching reruns of sports since that was all we had. I honestly felt so disconnected from people. Thankfully technology allows us to communicate much more easily with my family and friends. If there was anything that was great about this whole thing is that I stayed in touch much more with ones I loved than ever before.

When I tell people I really missed them, they think I am so full of it! I guess that is what you get when your second language is sarcasm. As much as it was nice taking that break from it all, I realized that tennis is who I am. It’s such a large part of me. I realized how much I missed the little things. I miss the feeling of someone getting excited after a match win, showing people tennis on YouTube on my phone, or just the simplicity of giving a high five to someone. At the moment we can only teach private lessons here. For those of you who know me, I love teaching the big groups. I thrive off the energy of people. However, only teaching private lessons has allowed me to connect with people more deeply. It’s forced me to give more of my energy to the person and the sport. It has given me an opportunity to really get to know people’s tennis games and what makes each individual tick. Group clinics are fantastic, especially here in Amelia, but with the only option currently being privates, many more people are seeing the benefits of how individual instruction improves one’s game. Even though we aren’t at full capacity, I feel the energy of this place is back. People are out playing and learning this great sport once again. As I’ve said before, I consider myself one of the lucky ones. I hope all of us have realized how lucky we are to have tennis in our lives. The world has changed drastically. Change can be scary, but it can open doors to a brighter future. It can give us an opportunity to improve ourselves and the environment around us. I hope we can all embrace that. I hope during this time we were able to appreciate who and what is important in our lives. While for many of us it has been a strange and rough year, I hope we can all continue to be positive and move forward and create the life we all want.

“I was really missing tennis. Not just the sport, but the daily gathering of my tennis family.” 46
