EVERYONE CAN BE ON TOUR
Scott Colebourne Editor-at-Large
As my partner and I continued hitting we began to sweat more, it was a hot morning, even before the sun came up. The humidity that would dissipate later in the day still hung in the air and drenched our clothes. As I travelled from city to city, training each morning as the sun rose over the courts, the beach, or whatever was our training ground for the day, I was starting to feel “it”. On this day I definitely felt different; I felt better, stronger, faster, I was hitting the ball cleaner, crisper, deeper. We hit down the line, then cross court, then played points, serves, volleys, groundstrokes. It all became a blur of ball fuzz, sweat, and the constant thud of the ball on strings. As we walked off the court that morning, I felt more like a tennis player than I’d ever felt in my life! I was on tour! One aspect of the tennis life that I love are the unique feelings that it can create in all of us. Whether you’ve recognized this or not, we all play tennis for different reasons and those reasons can evolve over time.
Currently I play tennis for the feeling of hitting the ball cleanly and the discipline that it takes to do this, again and again. I gain great joy (and pain) from trying to position myself in the right part of the court at the right time to enable me to use perfect technique. This is a very elusive target and it keeps me motivated as perfection is rarely obtained in relation to my game. That summer day when I was on tour, I was 14 years old and in the middle of my high school summer vacation. I was playing in a series of local adult tournaments in rural New Zealand, traveling from town to town with my best friend and hitting partner. We got around through a combination of my mother driving us and using the longdistance bus service. It was a far cry from the US Open, but for me at that time, I felt like a real tennis player and for a 14-year-old in New Zealand whom had dreams of playing in that US Open one day, feeling like a real tennis player was all that mattered.
GIVING CREDIT TO OUR COACHES As a kid growing up on the coast of Sydney, Australia, my early childhood days were consumed by swimming practice/ competitions, heading to the beach with friends, or competing at the surf club. Over time I was losing a little interest in the swimming so I needed another sport I could play year round, but the options were limited. Scott McCulloch Editor-at-Large
During my youth, I had epilepsy and regular seizures. This ruled out contact sports. Determined to find a match my mum introduced me to tennis, to which I had no idea the lifelong journey that I was about to embark on, and the impact it would have in shaping my life nearly three decades later. As I flash through that journey something that stands out to me is the merit and acknowledgement that coaches deserve, and the profound impact they have on us; they are not only our teachers, but also our mentors. I was shy and very self-conscious because I couldn’t play the sports my friends did because of my epilepsy. However, I had such great parents, mentors and teachers that helped me focus my energy into my tennis. I also found a place, a voice and a

self-expression that allowed me to grow and gain self-confidence as a person. I am proud that the qualities of those who impacted me exist in our CDT culture of excellence, challenge and evolution. It is evident in our team as they are stepping up with a firm grip on their “tomorrow vision” to impact their community, club and colleagues. An achievement that I am proud of that we are experiencing across the board is the success of our Tennis 101 program. It is not simply a 4 week beginner tennis program for adults, but one that runs much deeper than that. Our team is creating an environment and experience that breaks down social barriers and connects the inner tennis player in us all with a lifestyle; friends, exercise and a tennis community. The commitment, learning, ownership and pride of the team is seen in the result with a retention rate of 50% of players completing the program, staying with tennis, and growing in the game. I look forward to future achievements as an industry and hope we all take a minute to recognize the merits of coaches that are around us.

SUCCESS IS PERSONAL
Katie Steck Managing Editor
Every player has a different baseline for what defines success. For Roger Federer, his successful career is largely defined by the number of Grand Slams he has won. For the average player, including my own, success looks very different.
The moment they do is gratifying for everyone involved. At our many Cliff Drysdale destinations and experiences, it is our absolute pleasure to have front row seats to the moments our players define – and achieve – success.
For me, success as a player was defined late in my senior season when I overcame an opponent who had never lost a collegiate match; this win propelled me to an appointment on the All-Conference team. As my competitive days have faded into the rearview, I quickly realized one of the most rewarding things is witnessing the success of others through the eyes of a coach.
Beyond being extremely personal, it is important to remember success is fluid, and often incremental. Even though Roger Federer has achieved the highest level of the game and secured the most Grand Slam Titles, he continues to redefine his definition of success – as evident by his recent tournament results. For me, success on the court nowadays is just striking the ball on a more frequent, consistent basis. At Cliff Drysdale Tennis we push each other, and our players, to define success early and often. This issue of Experience Magazine is special as we highlight varying stories of players, travel destinations, and industry news that define the same level of merit and are worthy of distinction in the tennis world.
For many players, success is often defined much more narrowly. It may be mastering the kick serve, finally feeling comfortable transitioning to the net, winning their first match or finally triumphing over their hitting partner. As a coach, you watch others put in a consistent effort to improve and reach those varying definitions of success.
PRAISE FOR THE PIONEERS
Joey Hanf Managing Editor
I’ve always found awards to be a precarious subject. The last decade in particular has seen the introduction of numerous award ceremonies, shows, lists etc. At the end of the day, it’s human nature; we all love the accolades, it feels good! But what I’ve seen happen, in tennis as well as other industries, is that we have created complacency in our goals, and lowered our standards of what success really means. It’s what’s referred to now commonly as the participation trophy issue. And while that term is usually thrown around in youth sports, it has clearly crept into the corporate world as well. So when our editorial team discussed the possibility of making one of our biannual issues a platform for praise, we did so with very specific criteria. First, we wanted to make sure that we gave attention to those that are pushing boundaries, not sticking to the status quo. Our piece on Oakley Foy and Racquet Wars feels like one of the best examples of that goal. Second, we wanted to recognize both organizations and people.
From our look at the USTA’s success with Net Generation, to Ashleigh Barty’s surreal comeback story, we hope you agree with us that this issue is all-encompassing. Next, we wanted to honor those that merited recognition through measurable results. Anyone can talk, but very few can back that talk up with real action. Everyone in this magazine has taken action, accomplished something new, and earned praise. Finally, we wanted to give a voice and tell the story of those that are often left untold. To me, there’s no better symbol of this than Novak Djokovic, who is arguably the greatest tennis player of all time, yet rarely gets the same coverage as his counterparts. He consistently draws crowds that are against him, but it won’t be long until those same crowds change teams. It’s the same reason we love giving the world a look inside some of CDT’s most impactful employees, who do most of their work behind the scenes.

FROM THE DESK of DON HENDERSON
A POSITIV E W A Y F O R W A R D I have never been shy in my praise, or critique, of organizations inside the tennis industry. I’ve taken a journey in tennis that I never expected. I’ve seen the highs and lows, and feel incredibly lucky to be in a position where I’m able to influence the growth of tennis. As a sport, tennis has unlimited potential; everyone can play, regardless of age! The biggest player in tennis in the United States is the USTA, and I’ve questioned many of their decisions in the past. From the public eye, you might think tennis is doing amazing in our country. Professional tennis and the U.S. Open has never been richer and television viewership has never been higher. Naturally, one might assume that success would trickle down. However, behind the scenes, grassroots tennis is struggling with a steady decline in actual tennis play across the board. Specifically, data shows that racquet industry manufacturers are down 30% in their sales of introductory racquets. Everyone in our industry should be in the business of growing tennis, none more so than the USTA. It’s understandable why historically they poured money into marketing and programs in an effort to attract new players. We have greater potential and resources than ever before, but unfortunately over the past few years, we’re not seeing the results. The problem? The delivery system is broken. A tennis player’s first experience on the court is crucial to their long-term enjoyment of the sport. Too often at clubs, schools and parks across the nation, that first experience has not been good enough. Players are not being introduced to tennis in the right way. I use the comparison of a restaurant business. If you have thousands of people coming through the door, but the food and service are below par, why would people come back? Eventually people are going to realize that your product is not a valuable one. Tennis professionals coming into the industry in the 1970’s and 1980’s had it great; tennis was booming and there was a lot of opportunities and players to teach. However, I feel that as an industry we became complacent in regards to developing
the next generation of tennis professionals. In short, the tennis delivery system has been neglected, and we are now seeing a serious decline. When myself and other key stakeholders in our industry were invited to meet with USTA executives last year, they once again touted their marketing campaigns. It felt like it was going to be the same old story. But after long spirited discussions and strategy meetings, as a group, we came out prioritizing the improvement of the tennis delivery system and the critical role that tennis providers and coaches play in the overall growth of the sport. Since then, I’ve seen a great paradigm shift from the USTA in their mindset of putting tennis pros first. The programs that we market are only as strong as the people providing them. I’ve personally witnessed the same program instructed in two totally different ways. That cannot happen if we want to scale the growth of tennis effectively. I believe player retention is of the utmost importance, and in a time when there are so many fast and easy options in the fitness world, our on-court product has to improve. I look at the success of our own Tennis 101 program as a prime example. Yes, in previous years we had beginner classes, but we didn’t put enough attention into the staffing and programming. After a fantastic initiative by our team, we are introducing - and keeping - hundreds of players into tennis each year. I am so impressed with the shift in strategy from the USTA, and believe that as an industry we’ve taken the important first step. That said, we still face the challenge of implementation, and I’m hopeful that everyone in our industry can come together to take action. I was excited when I saw the news of Michael Dowse being named the new USTA CEO and Executive Director; his significant industry experience and exposure to the larger sports world will be very valuable to the USTA. I feel confident that our leaders have better positioned the sport of tennis, and now it’s time to follow through.

L E ARNING F R O M T H E P A S T Embracing the Future Heading to Melbourne soon. Love the city. Oz has never been known for its cuisine, but Melbourne shines with multiple places to eat. 2020 will be my 41st year working at ESPN, and it’s taken me on a journey I never expected. When I went on air for the first time, during the Davis Cup tie between Argentina and the U.S. in 1979, most thought that ESPN was a novelty. The perception was that the network was a gimmick that would never amount to much. Of course, we all know it as the Worldwide Leader. In my era, nobody traveled with a coach. If you did, you were laughed at. We figured things out ourselves, and managed much more of the day to day life. Bjorn Borg was the first player to really embrace have a coach travel with him to every event. Now, the top players in the world are bringing entire entourages with them to tournaments. A coach, a physio, trainer, agent and family just to start. Even more impactful though have been the technological advancements. Racquet and string technology is what has virtually removed serve and volley from the game. Players like world no. 1 Rafael Nadal are standing 15 feet behind the baseline to return serve, and it’s effective. That is in large part due to the technology. The new baseline era has required tennis players to become amongst the most supreme and fittest athletes in the world. We are seeing more and more marathon matches, where rallies seem never-ending. My experience on the tour and in broadcast have led me to believe strongly in a fundamental change to match lengths. It’s time the men play best of 3 sets in the majors. We can make tennis more exciting and viewer friendly. Not only is it far better for TV, it will also be better for the players. There are more injuries now than ever before, and the nature of our marathon matches are playing a big part. As we look ahead to another year, I’m grateful for the countless things that tennis has offered me. I hope that we can learn from the past, and embrace the future so that our sport only grows stronger.

2020 WIMBLEDON EXPERIENCES
THE WIMBLEDON EXPERIENCE The Championships at Wimbledon has been known as the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world since its inception in 1877. The sport’s biggest names have all had career defining moments on the lush grass of the All-England Club. By Joey Hanf Part of the lore that Wimbledon has created is built upon the tradition and exclusivity the private club has created. Of course, players wear all-white. “A single trim of colour around the neckline and around the cuff of the sleeves is acceptable but must be no wider than one centimetre (10mm),” the policy reads. In 2013, 8 time champion Roger Federer wore shoes that contained a bit too much orange coloring on the out-sole, and he was forced to change them for his next match. The rules at Wimbledon truly apply to everyone. Fans that aim to cross Wimbledon off their bucket list face arguably a larger challenge. Non-UK citizens can enter their name into a ticket ballot, but have a slim chance of actually securing tickets to the days and courts that they hope for. Option two involves the infamous Queue. Thousands of spectators camp out in line just for the chance of securing access to the grounds, with most leaving it up to good fortune. However, Cliff Drysdale Tennis was pleased to offer in 2019 an exclusive opportunity to purchase tickets,
luxury accommodations and hospitality for it’s VIP guests. A number of CDT and Troon clients took advantage of the special offer, and were blown away by the sheer excellence that is Wimbledon. “Wimbledon was on our bucket list,” said Lori Vaudry, who attended the first week of the Championships. “We had dreamed about getting there. I had never been to London. The entire experience was out of this world. The architecture, the gardens, the food, the people and the culture; it’s all so wonderful. And when you get to Wimbledon itself - it just exudes British hospitality and tradition.” There are not many places you can visit each year that hold sports history quite like Wimbledon. Many compare the exceptional atmosphere of Augusta National and the Masters to be one of the only equivalents. Watching a match from center court, you can’t help but see visions of McEnroe, Borg, Navratilona, Williams, Federer and the other countless legends that

competed, all while potentially being on hand for a classic of our your own. The 2019 championships hosted a number of instant classics, including the historic 5 set, 5 hour battle in the Men’s final between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Simona Halep stunned Serena Williams in the women’s final, capturing her second major title. And while the Centre Court experience is a must, roaming the grounds and watching matches on the outside courts proved to be a trip highlight for many guests. “I was absolutely amazed by the talent of young people at the lower courts,” Vaudry said. “And when you watch them you are up front and close. Their talent is unbelievable. Their sprint and their passion for the game is so evident.” While the strawberries and cream, Pimms and proper fan etiquette are all signature fan experiences, what truly separates Wimbledon is almost impossible to describe unless you’ve stepped foot on the grounds. LIFESTYLE ...what truly separates La Costa from the competition are the customizable packages and special event opportunities.
There are numerous programs and events available for both members and resort guests at Omni La Costa Resort and Spa.
TENNIS MEETS TRANQUILITY Omni La Costa Resort and Spa By Joey Hanf Tennis travelers have a wealth of options each year, both inside the United States and abroad. Every resort and every location has their unique selling-points, but very few have the ability to put an entire agenda of activities and leisure, specific for tennis players, at their disposal. At Omni La Costa Resort and Spa, however, it’s clear that the tennis guest has been taken care of, and then some. Before even considering anything else, tennis travelers top priority is most often the programming the resort offers on a weekly basis. Cliff Drysdale Tennis manages the world class tennis program, and there is no shortage of play opportunities. The facility includes 17 total courts, including 4 red clay and 13 hard courts, including 7 lighted for night play. There are three hours of tennis clinics every day, with an intermediate offering from 9-10am, 10-11am, and 2-3pm. 28

LIFESTYLE An afternoon clinic offering is not something you’ll see at many resorts, but one that La Costa is proud to offer. It helps when the weather is 70 degrees and sunny almost year round.
Celebrity All-Star Match on March 1st, which will feature the likes of Maria Sharapova, Bob Bryan, Mike Bryan, Sam Querrey, CoCo Vandeweghe, Taylor Fritz, and Madison Keys amongst others.
“It’s fairly standard to have daily clinics in the morning at a resort, but we’re proud to offer the afternoon session so guests can have more options when they plan their stay,” said Bryce Cunningham, Director of Tennis. “We also have a great membership here at La Costa, so resort guests are able to mix in and play with players of a similar level.”
“Having the Aviators choose La Costa as our home club over the last five years has been fantastic,” Cunningham said. “The matches bring great energy to the club, and are a big hit with resort guests.”
Of course, the adult program goes much further than daily clinics. Beginner players can participate in weekly Tennis 101 or Tennis 201 sessions hosted Wednesday and Friday, while advanced players and above enjoy the popular Wednesday evening 90 minute clinic. And regardless of your level of play, cardio tennis on Tuesday and Thursdays gives those looking for an amazing workout the opportunity to have fun while burning calories. But what truly separates La Costa from the competition are the customizable packages and special event opportunities. With nearly a dozen tennis professionals on staff, guests can take individual or group lessons at any time of the day.
Outside of tennis, La Costa has a plethora of amenities, many of which have been ranked amongst the best in the world. Sticking with sports, the resort features two pristine 18 hole golf courses, which have earned La Costa the Golf Digest Editors Choice award and numerous other accolades. The golf facility has been home to a number of PGA and LPGA tournaments throughout the years. Step out of your athletic shoes and into relaxation at one of the nation’s highest regarded spa and wellness centers. The Spa at La Costa is committed to providing a relaxing retreat during your stay in Carlsbad while utilizing innovative techniques, organic ingredients and sustainable products. It was named “Favorite Resort Spa Nationwide” by American Spa in 2018.
“Custom group clinics are definitely our most popular offering at La Costa and other CDT resorts,” said Katie Steck, Director of Experiences. “This opens up a guest’s schedule, and gives them the opportunity to customize their clinics so that they can work on specific parts of their game.”
Thinking of bringing the family? There’s no shortage of options for children with the Splash Landing Pools and popular waterslides. Can you say summer vacation? The resort features 6 pools in total, each of which has its own unique splendor. And if you find time to step off the resort property, downtown San Diego is just a short drive away with major attractions, as are the cozy downtown areas of Carlsbad and Encinitas.
Beyond programming, there is a strong professional tennis presence at La Costa. Each summer, the San Diego Aviators and World Team Tennis host home matches on the beautiful sunken stadium court. New for 2020, World Team Tennis is hosting the WTT
Did we mention that the weather is almost perfect year round? There’s a reason they call it sunny San Diego, and regardless of when you’re looking to travel, the dry and crisp climate make Omni La Costa Resort and Spa an ultimate bucket list destination for tennis.

DISCOVER STRATTON The Mountains Are Always a Good Idea By Katie Steck
The first thing that comes to mind when people think of Stratton Mountain Resort is snow, and lots of it. Stratton Mountain is widely known as a world-class ski-destination. However, Stratton Mountain might be one of Vermont’s best-kept secrets as a year-round, all-season destination. Depending on the season, resort activities on Stratton Mountain range from skiing, mountain biking, hiking, yoga, and – yup, you guessed it – tennis. These activities and more capture the essence of everything there is to love about being outdoors in scenic Vermont with the whole family. 32
Stratton Mountain is the premier New England ski destination with 99 trails fanning from a single summit, the highest peak in southern Vermont. Stratton is the home of Vermont’s first World Cup ski races and the birthplace of snowboarding. Stratton’s Snow School is a great place to strengthen your technique on the slopes and offers seasonal programs, groups, and private lessons for all ages. Skiing and snowboarding are the heart of a winter getaway, but that is just the start of what Stratton Mountain has

LIFESTYLE to offer in the winter season. Guests get to enjoy off-slope activities like snowshoeing, split boards, and snow tubing, as well as fat bikes as a way to float over the snow for a fun winter activity, and ice skating under the stars. You are guaranteed to have a magical experience on the mountain for your winter trip. Winter yields a short, crisp (and yes, still skiable) Spring. March is goggle tan season with events like the Vermont Open, a snowboarding competition that celebrates the history and progression of a sport born on the mountain. The spring powder days are some of the best ways to hit the slopes for maximum ski time and steep savings. As the snow melts, preparation for a full set of summer activities is in full swing and is one of the best times to check out the two newly finished indoor courts at the Stratton Mountain Tennis School with Cliff Drysdale Tennis. Summer in southern Vermont is unlike any other, and it provides the perfect setting to get outside and explore the great outdoors. Summer may just be Stratton Mountain’s secret season. The Green Mountains provide the perfect scenery for hiking to the summit that inspired the Long and Appalachian trails. For those seeking for a more leisure hike we recommend taking the Gondola up followed by a hike to the historic fire tower with 360degree views clear across four states and mountain ranges- the Greens, Whites, Adirondacks, and Berkshires. Throughout the summer and fall, Stratton offers 27 holes of championship golf on a course that played host to six LPGA tournaments and tennis on New England’s only authentic red clay courts at the Stratton Mountain Tennis School with Cliff Drysdale Tennis. Phase one of the Mountain Bike Park opened in Fall 2019 with 4.7 miles of life-served terrain. Patrons can also enjoy biking, paddle boarding, indoor and outdoor yoga classes and outdoor concerts in the village. Stratton proves everything is better in the mountains.
Fall foliage season is a popular time to visit Stratton. As the Vermont leaves burst into bright colors, scenic lift rides on the Stratton Gondola become popular to see the reds, orange, and yellow leaves that spread across the Green Mountains. Stratton hosts a fall festival in October with a beer paring dinner, live music, a chili cook-off, hay rides and mountain top yoga. With winter right around the corner, guests are looking forward to the upcoming snow season, but they are still able to enjoy all outdoor activities they have been enjoying throughout the summer, including a few more hitting sessions on Stratton Mountain’s famous red clay. Knowing our guests are likely fans of Rafa and the French Open, we encourage and invite you to join us for an experience unlike any other on New England’s only red clay courts. This tennis facility combines world-class instruction and programs with a picturesque background of Stratton’s peak that is second to none. Stratton caters to the full spectrum of tennis players from individuals and couples to families and team groups with comprehensive adult and junior player options, cardio tennis, and weekly mixers. The tennis school has eight outdoor red clay courts, seven outdoor

hard courts, and two indoor hard courts and is open year-round for guests to enjoy – so be sure to bring all your family and friends! Life on the mountain is always buzzing in the Village, a classic alpine gathering place. When staying on the mountain, there is a variety of accommodations that suit every style and budget, all at the heart of the resort. Everyone gathers at the Village at the base of the mountain to enjoy Vermont fresh fare, live music, shopping, or to unwind at the spa. Restaurants in the village range from family friendly to fine dining, all just steps from the slopes, lodging and tennis. From your sunrise hike to a moonlight concert, mountain top yoga to skiing the slopes, there is always something happening on Stratton Mountain.
If you are planning your first mountain getaway – or your first visit in a while – we guarantee you will find an outdoor experience like no other at Stratton Mountain in southern Vermont…no matter the season!

Cliff Drysdale Tennis facilities extend across the United States and internationally, but we recognize we would be nothing without the guests and members that play tennis with us every day. Our members and guests are part of the CDT family and form a bond with our staff at each location. Members like Ton Roelandse embody what our CDT family so great. Ton is a longtime resident of Coconut Grove, Miami. He has played tennis at The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne, Miami for the last 15 years. He loves to play and enjoys his time on the picturesque courts, as well as experiencing the game with other locals, resort guests, and the local pros. Tennis has been an integral part of Roelandse’s life since he was a young child. He remembers hitting against a wall with a wooden racquet before switching to play competitive squash in the Netherlands in his early 20’s.
EMBODY the CDT FAMILY LIFESTYLE Highlighting Ton Roelandse
Ton grew up in The Hague, Netherlands, and he has been traveling the world and lived in many countries throughout his career as a management and technology consultant. He has called Miami home since 1996 when he came to complete work for a local utility company. Once Ton started living in Miami, he switched back to playing tennis because he loved being outside. He found The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne, Miami Tennis Garden through his then fiancée, now wife of 13 years, Monica. He religiously returns to these courts two or three times a week. He and Monica used to play singles and friendly doubles together before having two boys, now 7 and 8. Ton lives a short 20-minute drive away from The RitzCarlton, Key Biscayne – over the Rickenbacker Causeway that connects Miami to Key Biscayne. He described the scenic drive with palm trees and beaches as “extremely relaxing and adds to the enjoyment of going to tennis.” Nowadays, he takes private lessons and enjoys the morning group clinics that are “good competitive fun, that we all take extremely seriously” with his friends that he has made on the tennis courts.

Over the years, tennis has taught him that “you are never as good as you think you are.” A great example of this is when he played Marion Bartoli at the Miami All Stars event hosted at The Ritz-Carlton, Key Biscayne in 2013, the same year she won Wimbledon. Bartoli destroyed him with her kick serve. The following year, Ton had the opportunity to play with Ana Ivanovic at the same event. “She had an amazing attitude on court during match play. ASHLEIGH BARTY
More than a Comeback Barty’s slice backhand, pictured above, is one of her most dangerous and unique strokes.
By Joey Hanf You’ve probably heard her name by now, but Ashleigh Barty’s rise to the top of the WTA rankings was nothing short of unexpected. She was an incredibly promising junior and soon a breakout teenage star, but that ascent came to a staggering halt. As we look back at Barty’s hiatus and ensuing success, remember that even when the stars align, sometimes we take a different path. At just 15 years old, it looked like Barty was going to be the next great Australian star. She became just the second Aussie to win the Wimbledon Junior Girls Championship in 2011, and the first since 1998 to win any junior major. Australia, a country with rich history of tennis success, was craving for a female star after a decades long drought. Margaret Court, still the all-time leader with 24 major titles, last won in 1963, and has not done much in recent years to help her popularity with the general public. 40
EXPERIENCE Magazine | www.ExperienceCDT.com
PEOPLE So when Barty, still just 15 years old, earned Tennis Australia’s wild card into the main draw of the Australian Open, excitement was met equally with expectation. And unlike many her age, she delivered promising results on the professional stage. By 2013, still just 17, she had worked her way into the top 150 in the singles rankings, and the top 20 of the doubles rankings. Such results earned her comparisons to Martina Hingis, another former young star who excelled in singles and doubles. Those comparisons did not come solely because of her results, but also through her style of play. Barty’s game featured significantly more variety than many of her counterparts, and was not singularly focused on power or spin. With that potential, however, comes pressure. Most of Barty’s early success ended up coming in doubles, where she and partner Casey Dellacqua finished runner up at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open. These results, which never really received the accolades they should have, influenced Barty’s tournament schedule in a way that ended up hurting her singles ranking. She could not qualify for the main draw of most main draw WTA tour events, but as a top doubles player, that took priority. By September of 2014, Barty shocked the world, announcing that she was stepping away from professional tennis. Barty admitted that her passion for tennis had waned, adding that “I wanted to make sure I was all in or there’s no point doing it.” “It is tough when you’re by yourself, and I think that’s why team sport is so appealing,” said Barty, who soon picked up professional Cricket in Australia. “There’s never a lonesome moment on the field if you’re struggling. There’s 10 other girls that can help you out and get you through the tough times.” Barty played cricket for the better part of one year, and given she had never played before, was very successful. Her athleticism and hand eye coordination was clear in whatever sport she chose to play. In February 2016, Barty announced she would return to professional tennis, initially just in doubles. By May, she was competing in both singles and doubles, where she immediately made an impact. In just her second event back in singles, she reached the quarterfinals of the Nottingham Open, losing top seed Karolina Pliskova in a tight match. The natural narrative would be an imminent rise up the rankings, but that’s not what the future held. Barty suffered a bone stress injury in her arm, and was left out of all but one tournament for the remainder of the season.
Barty, pictured here with partner Coco Vandewhege, has been dominant in both singles and doubles.
But in 2017, the pieces started falling into place. By year end, Barty would be inside the top 20 of both the singles and doubles rankings. She succeeded far more in singles than she ever had before, including a handful of top 10 wins and capturing her first WTA title. In doubles, she once again finished runner up at a major, this time the French Open. She and partner Dellacqua won the WTA Finals in October, capping off a fantastic year. In 2018, Barty captured her first major title in doubles at the U.S. Open, and continued to rise in the WTA singles rankings, reaching a career high number 15 at year end. Her game was coming together in ways that many had expected; her slice backhand gave every opponent fits, while her improved serve won her many more free points than earlier in her career. That comeback was a big enough story in itself. But Barty never settled for great; she wanted to be the best. 2019 was a historic year, where she won the French Open singles title on clay, what formerly was her worst surface. She reached world no. 1 and won the WTA Finals, this time in singles, and was named the WTA Player of the Year. Tennis has seen many returns to greatness over the years, but the fashion in which Ashleigh Barty triumphed through adversity may never be seen again in our sport. She has won many awards for her efforts, and there is no better person to honor with our distinction of merit.

Showing little emotion, Djokovic fought off the match points before defeating Federer in the first ever 5th set 12-12 tiebreaker at Wimbledon. PEOPLE embracing this role, it didn’t come naturally for Novak. His personality has always been one that wanted to connect with children and fans, and having crowds against him took a toll early in his career. Still to this day, Djokovic has tried to earn over the public’s support on a wider scale through new celebrations, fan engagement and much more.
Djokovic. His technique, athleticism, mix of aggression and defense makes him arguably the toughest opponent in all of men’s tennis. His baseline technique has always been near perfect, but he has totally rounded out his game by developing one of the best serves in the world and an excellent net game. There are virtually no weaknesses in his game.
Novak was asked how he deals with crowds that are against him after winning the Wimbledon title, and his response is a great indicator of how he has evolved over time.
If you could create a player that played the highestpercentage shot every time, it would be Djokovic. He rarely if ever makes a mental error, and has talked at length about his mental and emotional preparation for matches, including visualization.
“Of course, if you have the majority of the crowd on your side, it helps, it gives you motivation, it gives you strength, it gives you energy,” Djokovic said. “When you don’t, then you have to find it within, I guess.” Sure, Djokovic still has blips on the radar. A strange 2017 left him looking vulnerable for the first time, but he silenced those doubts immediately with a strong 2018 season. Over the last eights years, Djokovic has won 15 of his 16 major titles, an astonishing clip of almost two per year. During that time, he has been ranked no. 1 in the world for over 270 weeks, good enough for third all time. He has won every big title there is to win; he’s the only player to win all 9 ATP Masters 1000 series events, a true testament to Djokovic’s ability on all surfaces. When coaches, experts and commentators talk about how modern tennis is played, there is no better example than
“I obviously try to play the match in my mind before I go on the court,” Djokovic said. “Also there has to be, next to the willpower, strength that comes not just from your physical self, but from your mental and emotional self.” He’s as spiritual of a player as there is on tour, even once hiring a “guru”, Pepe Imaz, to be a part of his team. You can question Djokovic’s strategy or antics, but it’s impossible to argue with his results. And his ability to achieve so much, when many in the sport have rooted for him to fail, makes his accomplishment all the more impressive. He has a chance to go down as the greatest to ever play the game, and he’s mentally doing just fine even if you think he’s not. That inner belief and confidence is what has spurred Djokovic to become the most dominant player of the decade, and sooner or later, everyone is going to be paying attention.

RACQUET WAR
Paving the Way Forward By Joey Hanf
Adult tennis players across the nation have long known what “play opportunities” were at their hands. Traditionally, one can play in lessons, clinics, interclub leagues, USTA leagues as well as sanctioned or unsanctioned tournaments. Each has their own benefits, and downsides. But within the framework of these play options, there were a number of gaps that left players wanting more. This is where Racquet War would like to introduce themselves. Founded by Oakley Foy in 2009, Racquet War is a new kind of tournament experience for players of all levels. Aimed at providing a better experience for competitive and social adult players, Foy has tackled many of the problems with traditional tournaments. His events are growing exponentially each year. “I was pretty active in tennis and couldn’t ever find tournaments to play in, and the ones I did were run so poorly, so disorganized, playing the same people that I play all the time,” said Foy. “I decided that I could run a tournament better than that, and I would run it like tennis players like it run, not some tennis pro at a club who was only doing it because they had to.”
Oakley Foy (center) founded Racquet Wars in 2009, and now hosts dozens of tournaments each year singles and doubles.
First, when most adult players experience a tournament, there are a number of roadblocks. Registration can be challenging; not only do you have to understand your own level of play, but you have to ensure that other players in the tournament are of a similar level. Racquet War modifies the traditional rating model by actually testing players out before the tournament begins. “The waterfall was developed for multiple reasons,” said Foy. “Players can’t complain about people being underrated, overrated or whatever. Anyone can play with anyone, the ratings don’t matter. So if I am a 4.0 and my best friend is a 3.0, I can play with them. All draws always make.
50
Racquet War players have the option to add on a tennis clinic in addition to their tournament matches, a popular option to fine tune their game.

INDUSTRY
Thousands of players participate in Racquet War tournaments each year. 2019 Amelia Island Racquet War group pictured above.
Finally, so many tournaments have draws not make because of not enough players. We don’t have that problem with the waterfall because they always make.” By creating divisions based upon results, Racquet War becomes an option for all players to enjoy success right away. In traditional tournaments, if drawn against a tough opponent and suffering a loss, a player or teams chance to succeed is gone right away. At the same time, there is very much a competitive edge to these events, as the winners advance in their division and earn opportunities to qualify for higher ranking Racquet Wars tournaments, such as the national championship. The next element that separates Racquet War from many of tennis’ competitive alternatives is location and setting. Foy has partnered with tennis resorts and clubs around the country to provide bucket list destinations for his tournaments. Another emphasis on the experience, Racquet War offers discounted lodging options on site, as well as a kick-off clinic for all tournament participants. Finally, Racquet War has an on-site photographer at each event that provides photos for players to take home. These little details have elevated Racquet War to be at the front of mind for any active adult tennis player.
Tournament packages have allowed for couples, doubles partners, and large groups to attend these events and enjoy a trip that includes first class tennis. This, Foy says, is where the social aspect of Racquet War has been crucial in it’s growth. “The social part of our tournaments is just as important as the actual tennis tournament,” said Foy. “People are looking for an experience, a weekend getaway, to not only play tennis, but have a good time.” Racquet War tournaments have been hosted at a handful of Cliff Drysdale Tennis locations, including Omni Amelia Island Resort and Plantation, Omni Rancho Las Palmas Resort and Spa and Weston Tennis Center. 2020 events are also scheduled for Walden Racquet Center, Bluewater Bay Tennis Center, and The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami. “Oakley looks at every aspect of the tournament from the eyes of a player, and what the player would want, which makes sense because Oakley is a player himself,” said Scott Colebourne, COO of Cliff Drysdale Tennis. “I think that’s the major difference between Racquet War and other tournaments is that these events really put the players first. I’m proud that CDT has played a small role in Racquet War expansion and continued growth.”
“PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR AN EXPERIENCE, A WEEKEND GETAWAY, TO NOT ONLY PLAY TENNIS, BUT TO HAVE A GOOD TIME.” 52

NET GENERATION: More than Marketing By Joey Hanf Launched in August of 2017, Net Generation was the newest USTA initiative aimed at growing the game of tennis with kids aged 5-18. With the U.S. Open’s large audience in line, there was clearly going to be a lot of eyes on this new campaign. Net Generation’s goal at announcement was to provide American tennis with one unified youth brand for children to get into the sport, making it easier for children and their parents to learn about tennis and get into the game in schools, parks and tennis clubs across the country. “Net Generation is a bold approach to empower kids to play the game while elevating and setting new standards on how we deliver and engage children in our sport,” said Craig Morris, General Manager, USTA Community Tennis and Youth Tennis. “These efforts will make a lasting impact to help drive youth participation throughout the country.”
54
Excitement and intrigue were met with skepticism, however. Many believed that this was simply a new marketing slogan that would end up with the same old results. Over two years later with clear progress in view, it’s clear that Net Generation has been a big win for both youth players and tennis providers alike. Primarily, the experience that children have with tennis has been more clearly refined and made consistent, regardless of where you’re located. Resources such as drills, games and lesson plans have allowed coaches of various experience levels to be able to deliver an excellent experience across the board. And the more providers that have registered for Net Generation, the easier it is for parents to find tennis programs and locations near them. All Cliff Drysdale Tennis professionals and locations are registered on Net Generation,

INDUSTRY and offer an array of programs for all levels and ages. One of the most valuable assets for coaches is the equipment and access to help provide after-school programs at schools. Net Generation certified coaches can help out in a number of ways, including physical education substitutes as well as after-school programs on and off site. Rob Lowe, Director of Tennis at Walden Racquet Center and the USTA Texas Net Gen Provider of the Year, said that Net Generation had allowed him to introduce tennis to hundreds of new players that he previously had trouble reaching. “Our progress in the schools was remarkable in 2019, thanks in large part to the help of Net Generation,” Lowe said. “These relationships are creating new and lifelong tennis players.
Physical Education and organized athletics was a big component Net Generation offered to expand my vision as a professional.” Of course, there’s more work to be done. Clearly defining and strengthening the player pathway remains a top priority, with play options for players of all levels being piloted at CDT managed locations across the country. There is more competition than ever for youth activities and sports, as well as the attention grabbing screens at children’s disposal. Net Generation, however, has unified junior tennis across the nation, a key first step to ensuring increased participation and player retention. While it might have sounded like another nice slogan, Net Generation is proving to be much more than just a marketing campaign.
Top Left: By using lower compression balls, young players are able to have a better tennis experience faster. Right: Net Generation provides coaches with equipment and training material to best serve players of all ages and abilities .
