The Mountains Are Always a Good Idea

By Katie Steck

The first thing that comes to mind when people think of Stratton Mountain Resort is snow, and lots of it. Stratton Mountain is widely known as a world-class ski-destination. However, Stratton Mountain might be one of Vermont’s best-kept secrets as a year-round, all-season destination. Depending on the season, resort activities on Stratton Mountain range from skiing, mountain biking, hiking, yoga, and – yup, you guessed it – tennis. These activities and more capture the essence of everything there is to love about being outdoors in scenic Vermont with the whole family. Stratton Mountain is the premier New England ski destination with 99 trails fanning from a single summit, the highest peak in southern Vermont. Stratton is the home of Vermont’s first World Cup ski races and the birthplace of snowboarding. Stratton’s Snow School is a great place to strengthen your technique on the slopes and offers seasonal programs, groups, and private lessons for all ages.

to offer in the winter season. Guests get to enjoy off-slope activities like snowshoeing, split boards, and snow tubing, as well as fat bikes as a way to float over the snow for a fun winter activity, and ice skating under the stars. You are guaranteed to have a magical experience on the mountain for your winter trip.

Winter yields a short, crisp (and yes, still skiable) Spring. March is goggle tan season with events like the Vermont Open, a snowboarding competition that celebrates the history and progression of a sport born on the mountain. The spring powder days are some of the best ways to hit the slopes for maximum ski time and steep savings. As the snow melts, preparation for a full set of summer activities is in full swing and is one of the best times to check out the two newly finished indoor courts at the Stratton Mountain Tennis School with Cliff Drysdale Tennis.

Summer in southern Vermont is unlike any other, and it provides the perfect setting to get outside and explore the great outdoors. Summer may just be Stratton Mountain’s secret season. The Green Mountains provide the perfect scenery for hiking to the summit that inspired the Long and Appalachian trails. For those seeking for a more leisure hike we recommend taking the Gondola up followed by a hike to the historic fire tower with 360- degree views clear across four states and mountain ranges- the Greens, Whites, Adirondacks, and Berkshires.

Throughout the summer and fall, Stratton offers 27 holes of championship golf on a course that played host to six LPGA tournaments and tennis on New England’s only authentic red clay courts at the Stratton Mountain Tennis School with Cliff Drysdale Tennis. Phase one of the Mountain Bike Park opened in Fall 2019 with 4.7 miles of life-served terrain. Patrons can also enjoy biking, paddle boarding, indoor and outdoor yoga classes and outdoor concerts in the village. Stratton proves everything is better in the mountains.

Fall foliage season is a popular time to visit Stratton. As the Vermont leaves burst into bright colors, scenic lift rides on the Stratton Gondola become popular to see the reds, orange, and yellow leaves that spread across the Green Mountains. Stratton hosts a fall festival in October with a beer paring dinner, live music, a chili cook-off, hay rides and mountain top yoga. With winter right around the corner, guests are looking forward to the upcoming snow season, but they are still able to enjoy all outdoor activities they have been enjoying throughout the summer, including a few more hitting sessions on Stratton Mountain’s famous red clay.

Knowing our guests are likely fans of Rafa and the French Open, we encourage and invite you to join us for an experience unlike any other on New England’s only red clay courts. This tennis facility combines world-class instruction and programs with a picturesque background of Stratton’s peak that is second to none. Stratton caters to the full spectrum of tennis players from individuals and couples to families and team groups with comprehensive adult and junior player options, cardio tennis, and weekly mixers. The tennis school has eight outdoor red clay courts, seven outdoor

hard courts, and two indoor hard courts and is open year-round for guests to enjoy – so be sure to bring all your family and friends!

Life on the mountain is always buzzing in the Village, a classic alpine gathering place. When staying on the mountain, there is a variety of accommodations that suit every style and budget, all at the heart of the resort. Everyone gathers at the Village at the base of the mountain to enjoy Vermont fresh fare, live music, shopping, or to unwind at the spa. Restaurants in the village range from family friendly to fine dining, all just steps from the slopes, lodging and tennis.

From your sunrise hike to a moonlight concert, mountain top yoga to skiing the slopes, there is always something happening on Stratton Mountain.

If you are planning your first mountain getaway – or your first visit in a while – we guarantee you will find an outdoor experience like no other at Stratton Mountain in southern Vermont…no matter the season!
