2020 will be my 41st year working at ESPN, and it’s taken me on a journey I never expected. When I went on air for the first time, during the Davis Cup tie between Argentina and the U.S. in 1979, most thought that ESPN was a novelty. The perception was that the network was a gimmick that would never amount to much. Of course, we all know it as the Worldwide Leader.
In my era, nobody traveled with a coach. If you did, you were laughed at. We figured things out ourselves, and managed much more of the day to day life. Bjorn Borg was the first player to really embrace have a coach travel with him to every event. Now, the top players in the world are bringing entire entourages with them to tournaments. A coach, a physio, trainer, agent and family just to start.
Even more impactful though have been the technological advancements. Racquet and string technology is what has virtually removed serve and volley from the game. Players like world no. 1 Rafael Nadal are standing 15 feet behind the baseline to return serve, and it’s effective. That is in large part due to the technology. The new baseline era has required tennis players to become amongst the most supreme and fittest athletes in the world. We are seeing more and more marathon matches, where rallies seem never-ending.
My experience on the tour and in broadcast have led me to believe strongly in a fundamental change to match lengths. It’s time the men play best of 3 sets in the majors. We can make tennis more exciting and viewer friendly. Not only is it far better for TV, it will also be better for the players. There are more injuries now than ever before, and the nature of our marathon matches are playing a big part.
As we look ahead to another year, I’m grateful for the countless things that tennis has offered me. I hope that we can learn from the past, and embrace the future so that our sport only grows stronger.

ABOUT PROFESSIONAL TENNIS U Motivated and driven candidates will be chosen from the applicant pool to complete a 12-month intensive work and training program that encompasses all facets of tennis club management, including: on court programming of all ages and levels, event hosting and execution, facility management, employee management, digital media, marketing and financial operations. PTU trainees will also work vigorously to enhance their skills off the court through seminars, coursework and planning sessions taught by tennis industry leaders and guest speakers. This is a real life, hands on, program that allows tennis professionals to learn through action and experience. The PTU program is divided into 3 phases. Phase I begins in January or August.
