A Letter From The Editors The Year of the Fittest Use strength to set yourself apart Watching professional tennis this season, one thing has made it itself abundantly clear; 2016 was the Year Of The Fittest. Being a fitness professional for over 20 years and an amateur athlete my entire life, I’ve seen and experimented with different fads and trends. The pros and amateurs alike have always taken their fitness and nutrition seriously, however, it has transcended to a level that blows me away! Rather than simply testing the waters, athletes are now taking a more holistic approach to health and fitness. Disciplines like yoga, pilates and meditation (which were once an afterthought) have become not only legitimate but essential. The dominance Novak Djokovic has displayed in recent years is credited to his change in nutrition as well as physical and mental training. On the flip side, the human body can only endure such a beating until it takes its toll. The increasing demand for high performance in professional tennis may not only shorten the lifespan of a player, but also may leave permanent scars.

there are a lot of dumbbells clinking around the gym. On the contrary, Rafa is all about the CORE. A few examples of what he incorporates in his fitness regimen: -The Power Plate: a vibrating platform that engages 95% of muscles throughout the body and assists with recovery of broken down muscle tissue -Resistance Bands: stretch and strengthen the muscle by applying resistance, but is not “load bearing” like free weights. It increases mobility and mimics functional movement unlike dumbbells.

DiAnna Drysdale Executive Editor

-Stretching: improves your range of motion, increases circulation and calms the mind. In spite of all that Rafa is doing, he has still has been stricken with injuries of late.

The agility of the modern tennis professional allows them to play the game at a level that we have never seen before. I am very enthusiastic for the future of the fitness industry which I have been a student of for Rafael Nadal is physically one of the most of my life. The marriage of strongest players on the tour and fitness and tennis not only changes his level of fitness can be attributed the sport, but also how the sport to many factors. First and foremost, is regarded. It is no longer the a lot of court time. Observing genteel country club sport. Today’s Nadal’s physique one would think tennis professional could compete 4

alongside elite athletes from any other sport. My concern is whether these modern techniques can prevent these athletes bodies from breaking down. So are all the high-tech and mainstream ideas increasing the lifespan of an athlete, or leading up to injury? This is hardly a new conversation but there are new solutions being discussed. Technology is infiltrating the world of fitness and to postulate the idea that it will play a more pertinent role in professional sports is compelling but still being explored. In this issue we will hear from those behind the scenes of our favorite sport and what to expect in 2017 and beyond.

Building Life Long Relationships Katie Steck Managing Editor

For me, tennis has always been a family sport. As I look back on all of the ways tennis has influenced my life, I am realizing that tennis is much more than a sport; it is an EXPERIENCE.

Growing up in a tennis family, my grandparents had a tennis court in their backyard, my dad and I would always go play tennis at our neighborhood courts, and now I help coach my brother who is looking to play collegiate tennis. While playing college tennis, I was fortunate enough to have teammates that became my family away from home. Friendships forged on the tennis court tend to last a lifetime. As I began my coaching career at various Cliff Drysdale clubs, I was able to create lasting friendships with members, guests, and fellow coaches. My experience is a testament to just how much tennis can be a vital component of any relationship. The tennis experience has always been a vital part of my identity. In my new role here at Cliff Drysdale Management as National Membership Manager, I am gracious to have the opportunity to help our members and their families grow and shape their individual tennis experiences through our new and exciting membership benefits program, EXPERIENCE.

Find a way to stay fit that is fun, unintimidating, and a social activity that you can enjoy with friends and family members. Herein lies the beauty of the sport of tennis, the highly touted “sport of a lifetime.” No matter your age or ability level, tennis can be enjoyed and it’s pure element

The Tennis Nerd On a long bus-ride home from a college tennis match, while my teammates discussed school and their weekend plans, I was preoccupied checking the liveJoey Hanf scores from an ATP Challenger event. One of my good friends Managing Editor looked over at me and said, “Joey you are such a ‘Tennis Nerd’.” It was joke at the time, but 4 years later I could not be more proud to embrace that title. I was a late bloomer to the sport; I didn’t start playing or watching tennis until I was 16. But once I was in, there’s been no looking back. I played for a couple years at the DIII level. But my passion for the sport has evolved off the court since then. I founded an independent media outlet, appropriately named, “The Tennis Nerds.” I covered tournaments, interviewed players, and worked for ESPN at the U.S. Open. I spent two unbelievable years with the Cornell Men’s Tennis team, and built life-long relationships during that time . I’m incredibly fortunate to have a role at Cliff Drysdale Management where I’m surrounded by my passion every single day. Tennis is massive and all-encompassing, but I’m always amazed at how intertwined the sport really is.

Cliff Notes Murray Claims World #1

Court Speed vs Entertainment

Andy Murray gets to world number one on the wings of superb physical shape. All elite players today have to be in top condition, but he has taken that commitment to fitness to new levels. He was helped by the injuries to Federer and Nadal, but he deserves this honor. Results don’t lie. The question now is can he stay on top? It’s in the nature of tennis to have a dominant player. Think Laver, Sampras, Connors, Federer, King, Navratilova, Evert, Graf; but competition at the top has never been tighter. My bet is Djokovic finds his way back to number one in 2017.

When I first played internationally three of the four majors were played on grass. Except for Wimbledon it was very poor grass with low and unpredictable bounces. Hence the need for serve and volley and chip and charge. Anything to avoid the ball bouncing. That has changed of course and with it so has the game. The challenge for today’s administrators is to keep the conditions to where the game is fun to watch. I have enjoyed this era of men’s tennis because the big four play a style that combines variety and finesse with power. It is really boring to me to watch the huge servers banging ace after ace and we seem to be seeing more of them.

Fitness As A Lifestyle

Fitness gave Murray the gift of becoming number one. The Uncertainty and Excitement Tennis gives the gift of fitness to everyone who plays of 2017 it. The heart rate elevates during a point and then rests in between points. It’s the most fun way to get in and stay in shape. If you can guide your loved ones to this 2017 is going to be great to watch. Can the big four game, and it becomes a lifestyle, you will have done hang on to their dominance? Federer and Nadal will be back and hopefully stay injury free. Will there be wonders for them. a breakthrough from someone like Jack Sock or Nick Kyrgios? She was a year consolidate her new status? All will be revealed gym rat. Martina followed and today, like their male and it begins for real in Melbourne in January. counterparts, women’s tennis is played by superior athletes.

Tennis’ Bad Boys? Then there is curious Kyrgios. Sanctioned by the ATP for lack of effort and out for the rest of the year. Tennis has had celebrated bad boys like John Mcenroe and Jimmy Connors, but they kept their antics within limits. Kyrgios’s disdain for the game and fans and his fellow players is impossible to figure. The closest comparison is Marcelo Rios from Chile who got to number one. He was a real jerk and had a short career and I predict the same for Nick Kyrgios. It’s sad because he is a huge talent.

Look forward to seeing you on the court!

Pros vs. Joes

The “Pro Am Experience” can benefit not only the amateur participant but the professional and the sport as well. “I’m here for you,” said PGA Champions Tour golfer, Mike Goodes, when asked by an amateur playing partner what he wanted to get out of the Wednesday Pro Am round before an important PGA Champions Tour event in Mississippi. Goodes, who is a perennial top-30 finisher on the Champions Tour, is one of the many professional athletes who has embraced the practice of playing with amateur golfers, whether they be fans, tournament sponsors or maybe employees or business executives that are on an outing or being rewarded for a job well done.

WHY TENNIS? TO PUT IN THE MILES

Tennis is the ultimate exercise both mentally and physically. A typical tennis match can last from 30 minutes to several hours. Over the course of the match, a tennis player can run 3 to 5 miles. (Dr. Jack Groppel & Dr. Nicholas

TO BUILD STRENGTH

Playing tennis burns fat, improves cardiovascular fitness, and helps the body maintain higher energy levels. Playing tennis builds muscle power and improves physical capacity. (Dr.

older generation are more physically prepared for. As Rafael Nadal likes to say, unless you are willing to suffer physically and mentally in today’s game, you won’t be tasting too much success. It doesn’t really matter what age you are, or at what level you play tennis, we are all searching for the same goal.

IMPROVEMENT For the players, one of the golden rules is to be specific with where that improvement is going to come from each time you step on the court. Pick one or two areas of your game to concentrate on and work through it. When you leave the court, you should be feeling better about that particular part of your game. Don’t dilute your practice sessions by working through every part of your game. The gains will come more slowly and important messages get lost. For the coaches, try the 4P way of teaching.

1. PATIENCE Listen to your player, learn from experiences and lead them whenever possible. Don’t rush improvement. The worst thing you can do is to try to squeeze 6 months of work into 3 months and not educate your player. The need to understand to believe it, to feel it, to implement it. Always preach the big picture and explain why you are running certain drills. In essence, it is your job to teach the player to coach themselves. Take note of tat important 30-minute window after exercise. That is the best time to take a mix of protein and carbohydrates for recovery and you’ll feel better for it the next day. And finally, remember the golden rule if you have a particular shot that is holding you back, or if you’re like Cliff Drysdale and you keep slamming those forehands into the bottom of the net, IF YOU DON’T MAKE A CHANGE, DON’T EXPECT TO SEE ONE. Be willing to try new things. Experiment with technique and equipment to find something that works for you. Listen to your coach. Listen to your player. There is always a way to get better.

Four Things Everyone Can Do To Stay Healthy By Elio Latella

Tennis is a sport played by many, and longevity in the game is crucial for success. With such a focus today on utilizing every possible tool to improve, I have included a few ways in which all players can help prevent injuries and how to stay on the court longer with minimized fatigue. When I was three years old I struck my first ball with my father’s racket which was likely bigger than I was at the time! At 26 years old, studying for my Master’s degree in Exercise Science, and a few tournaments later; I’ve had the experience of playing through numerous different situations. From growing up as a junior who began tournaments late (age 12), to winning a national championship in college with a team I will never forget. Needless to say, I have spent more than a few hours on the court. None of this would have been possible were it not for a few essential tips from coaches and trainers over the years. I am going to pass on some different aspects of fitness that I have gathered over the years that will ensure success and longevity in your game!

1) Pigeon - An effective hip opener that stretches the quadriceps and hip flexors for the side of the leg which is pointed back.

a dynamic warmup (stretching using active body movements) has been shown to prevent injuries and perform better.

different ways of producing energy depending on the type of work we do. Tennis relies upon carbohydrates for long periods of energy and sustained exertion. A simple way to combat fatigue at 4-4 in the third set would be to ensure you have a light meal high Nutrition: Many people are not aware in carbohydrates before you walk out of just how much good nutrition plays on court. This applies to any level into athletic success. The body uses tournament player, or anyone simply

wanting to get the most out of their training session. Good ideas are: Pasta, chicken and rice, or steamed vegetables. A banana is always a good thing to have in your tennis bag for a boost in carbohydrates midmatch or even some jelly beans (don’t get too crazy here!) for faster energy glucose when you’re really feeling tired.

2) Forward Fold - Stretches the hamstring where they meet the IT

3) Seated crossover - Helps to keep the spine, hips and shoulder joints flexible.

band.

Stretches: Some players love them, some hate them! I personally lean towards the latter despite doing yoga and having stretched all my life after play. Now let me be clear: There is a BIG myth you should stretch to “warm up” before play. For tennis players, a dynamic warmup (meaning stretching using active body movements) has been shown to prevent injuries and perform better. It is upon cooling down where focus is needed on releasing stretches. My three stretching recommendations are: Pigeon, forward fold, and a seated crossover. These variations allow for improved lower back health, hamstring flexibility, and range of motion - great for reaching that wider ball like Djokovic! Aim to do each stretch 2-3 times for 20 seconds after play. This will help keep you limber and in the game for years to come! 20

Warm up: As I mentioned above, a good warm up is a great way to stay healthy and not increase your risk of injury on cold muscles! A “theraband” is a great investment many players use to warm up shoulders, wrists, and back. Be active! Light jogging and tennis-based footwork get your blood pumping and joints ready for action.

These tips can be easily implemented to any sports routine and you will find, over time, how your performance can improve from small changes in preparation and health maintenance! Now get out there and have some fun!

Listen to your body: Finally, unless you are in a do-or-die match situation where going home is not an option…Listen to your body! Trust your training and feeling on court to understand how much more you can get out of your time on court. One thing I always say to my players is that “quality is more important than quantity.” Train focused and have fun but know when recovery is needed at the same time. Your body is an amazing machine that will tell you everything, so just listen.

Q&A: Nicole Gibbs by Joey Hanf

Nicole Gibbs is a 23 year old American professional tennis player from Cincinnati, Ohio. 2016 saw Gibbs’ cement herself inside the top 100 for the first time in her career. She competed on the biggest stages against the elite talent of the WTA. Gibbs was the top seed at November’s CopperWynd Women’s Pro Challenge, hosted by Cliff Drysdale Tennis. Joey Hanf spoke with Gibbs about her experience on the court, in college, the locker room, and much more.

result there, you will finish with a career high season-ending ranking around #75. How pleased are you with this season? Nicole Gibbs: Yeah, I think I made a

lot of moves forward this year. 2015 was actually a pretty tough year for me. I dropped from a career high of #82 to all the way outside the top 150. To have recovered from that and also reached a new career high ranking of Joey Hanf: First off, you’re in 68 has been really positive for me. the homestretch of your 2016 Also ending the season well inside the season at the CopperWynd Pro top 100 is a really strong statement Challenge—and regardless of about both my resiliency and how I

was able to get a team together that was really able to push me and get me back on track. So I do feel really happy with the trajectory of my career. That being said, I think I started the year really strong, and then I had a little bit of a hiccup mid-season. I didn’t pick up hardly any points in Europe and so that’s definitely something I’m going to be looking at next year; how can I maximize that part of the season and not have this kind of up-and-down rollercoaster of results. I would say I’m really pleased with the way my season has gone, but there’s tons and tons of

room for improvement. JH: What was one or two of your favorite moments throughout the year? Gibbs: I think the Indian Wells-Miami swing was really

telling for me. Although I had a fair number of top 100 and top 50 wins in my career up to that point, I had never really done it with the consistency that I brought those few weeks. I started that stretch with the tournament in Monterrey; I gained a little bit of confidence there with all the match play. Then I found myself grinding out of Indian Wells Qualifying all the way to the fourth round and pushing (Petra) Kvitova to deep in a third set. So that match in particular but also just the consistency I was able to show over those few weeks was really encouraging for me. It was my favorite part of the year.

JH: Those tournaments have pretty vastly different court and weather conditions. How were you able to adjust so well? Gibbs: For me a hard court is a hard court. Monterrey

or having a really good friend network completely outside of tennis that doesn’t care whether you win or lose; those are always principles that have been really important to me. So having that stepping stone of Stanford was incredible for my tennis, but even more so for Nicole Gibbs, #76 ranked WTA player, it was incredible was the top seed at the CopperWynd for me as a person Women’s Pro Challenge, Hosted by to maintain Cliff Drysdale Management. that sense of authenticity and not jump the gun on being “all tennis all the time”.

But for me, if I’m on a hard JH: Talk about the relationships you have with former court I’m comfortable and I’m happy. teammates, coaches and friends at Stanford.

JH: Let’s take a step back. How and when did you get started in tennis?

Gibbs: Tennis is an interesting sport in that it is so individual,

but there’s also such a strong community around it. I mean, Gibbs: I started playing when I was three years old. Possible you’re seeing the same players virtually week-in and weekeven before if that’s a thing (laughing). My dad was really out(around the tour). So it’s definitely beneficial—but not into tennis; he had played a little bit of college tennis himself absolutely necessary—to kind of force some friendships and had always wanted his kids to play the game. It’s gone there. But college is totally different. Having those people who legitimately want you to do well -- it’s not like “oh I’m down through several generations in our family. friends with you but secretly I hope I’m better than you”. (In JH: Even as a highly ranked junior, you decided to go college) We’re actually working towards the same goals and the college route and play tennis at Stanford. How we’re here to support each other. So that was really special for much has that decision shaped you into the person me. Even now in my pro career, Kristie Ahn, who I played with you are today? at Stanford, is on tour as well and we’re splitting an Airbnb here in Scottsdale. So I feel very strongly about holding on Gibbs: I think that decision has been really important to my tight to those really solid friendships, because it can be a little career, but only inasmuch as it was very authentic to who I am. strenuous making friendships when you’re on tour. It’s who I’ve always been; having a sense of balance in my life. Not being a one-trick pony as they say. Tennis is really, really JH: When you made the move to turn professional, important to me, but it’s also important to balance yourself how much of an adjustment was it to start playing for out. Whether that means getting a further education yourself again rather than a team? 24

There was definitely an adjustment period. You have to be comfortable being alone when you’re on tour. That’s just part of the animal, especially as you first transition. Right now I’m in a place where I’m able to travel with the coach and my dad almost week-in and week-out and that’s incredible. But when I first came out it was just me on the road and maybe there was a USTA coach there who could help me, but they were with several players at a time. You definitely don’t get that isolated social feel to it when you first come on tour so that was definitely a little bit of a culture shock for me. JH: How has your “Team” evolved since you’ve been on tour?

Gibbs: I was very fortunate in that I was able to work my way into the top 100 almost within one year to date of being on tour which affords you a lot more options. At the end of 2015 I started thinking about moving on from just the USTA and really get a team that’s fully dedicated to me and see what that feels like and if I’m able to maximize my career more within that setting. So that’s when I brought on (my current coach) Roger Smith who has been an incredible asset for me. I really believe in what we’re doing and I think when you have that sound process and you’re committing to it every single day with the same people there’s no way to not improve. JH: I know “fitting in” at the locker room can be a challenge for some players. What was that experience like for you? Gibbs: Yeah; I knew a lot of the players on the

challenger(ITF) tour. Having played those pro events since I was 14 years old I did feel fairly worked into that social scene. What was a little bit of a shock was moving up to the next level. Because it’s like, whoa, these are the people that I see on TV. I don’t necessarily believe I deserve to speak to these people much less play against them (laughing). There was definitely a transition period where I would go ‘Oh my god, there’s Serena, or there’s Jankovic’ and so on. It was crazy to just be in the same room as them. Over time you start to realize that all these players are people; there not just the face you see on TV. So this year I felt like I really hit my stride with that; I’m very comfortable with virtually everyone I see in the locker room.

I’ve made friends with Caroline Wozniacki, which has been incredible for me. She’s been not only a friend but a little bit of a mentor for me and so that’s been a really cool experience. I’m looking to hopefully pay that back in the future. JH: You’ve emerged as a strong voice off the court over the last couple of years. You haven’t been afraid to talk about pressing political issues; some of which are controversial. Who or what encouraged you to speak out and let your opinion be front and center in the public space? It’s not something everybody is comfortable with. Gibbs: Again I think it’s just a matter of authenticity. I’ve

never felt like I should put tennis or prospective sponsors above what I believe in as a person. So it’s always been very natural for me to voice my opinions, “use my platform” if you will. But even more that than; even if I was someone who didn’t have a platform, I would be voicing these opinions around my friends or family. My family used to joke that I should be a lawyer or a politician because I’m always very opinionated and I feel very strongly about the things I believe in. So for me it’s very natural. I have a lot of players ask me ‘wow, how are you willing to do that? You get so much blowback on twitter! Aren’t you worried about sponsors?’ For me, who I am as a person is well above what I am as a tennis player. And that’s the whole story.

JH: You’re still very young, with much of your career ahead of you; what are some of your short and long terms goals on the court? Gibbs: I always think this is kind of an interesting question;

and one that I don’t particularly like. I know it’s a cliché; “process over results” and things like that. But even more so, If I put my short term goal at getting to #50 in the world, that’s great. But what does that actually mean? I make my goals much more about improvement. For long term goals, I don’t like to have concrete things that I want to accomplish. I want to stay true to my process, dedicate everything I have to my team, and see how well I can maximize my tennis. I see no limits to what I can accomplish if I do those things.

PHIT AMERICA & CDT:

COMMITTED TO GETTING CHILDREN ACTIVE & FIT

by Mike May

According to a recent report by the CHEO Research Institute, U.S. children rank 47th in the world in overall physical fitness, based on a series of 20-meter shuttle runs (aka, The Beep Test) conducted with more than 1.1 million children from 50 countries. Yes, U.S. kids barely crack the top 50 in global fitness. Cliff Drysdale Tennis is committed to helping PHIT America reverse these troubling statistics.

The top five countries with the fittest children are Tanzania, Iceland, Estonia, Norway and Japan. This new information only confirms the reality of the current ‘Inactivity Pandemic’ now impacting the U.S. where nearly 82 million Americans are physically inactive – many of whom are children – according to PHIT America and the Physical Activity Council. The results of a recent study conducted at the University of North Dakota and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (Canada) reveal that U.S. children are woefully out of shape when compared to children from other countries. The study was reported in a recent edition of the British Journal of Sports Medicine. “Kids who are aerobically fit tend to be healthy and healthy kids are apt 28

In 2015, two-thirds of American children (ages 6-17) were classified as ‘not active to healthy standards,’ which means they were physically active less than three days a week in any activity. Of those 34.9 million children who are not ‘active to healthy standards,’ 21.6 million are 6-12 year olds and 13.3

“This issue of physical inactivity is also the ‘time bomb’ for the healthcare crisis in the U.S. as these inactive children are much more prone to disease,” says Dr. Jordan Metzl, Sports Medicine Doctor, New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery.

“For children, the foundation of an activity filled lifestyle starts with daily physical education in our schools,” says Dr. Tim Church, Professor at Pennington Biomedical, Louisiana State University. The leadership of Cliff Drysdale Tennis is in the midst of conducting outreach to local schools surrounding the 30 Drysdale-managed tennis and fitness clubs around the U.S. by offering tennis playing opportunities to school children, who otherwise never may have had the opportunity. The goal is to encourage a physically active lifestyle, exposing the kids to a fun activity which they can pursue as a family and for life. “Physical inactivity is a national problem, but to be most effective we need to band together to solve it at the local level,” states Scott McCulloch, VP of Operations, Cliff Drysdale Tennis. “Far too often, competitive sports and fitness programs are perceived as intimidating not only to children, but also their parents. We strive to create fun, no-cost pathways to introduce tennis to families and share all the ‘Fitness, Family and Friends’ benefits of this great game.” By understanding the current shortcomings and actively engaging our youth, both PHIT America and Cliff Drysdale Tennis are fighting to create a better future for our children.

When Moments Become a Lifetime

A Story of Longevity by Katie Steck Oftentimes, in the game of tennis, we hear coaches and players talk about how the sport, which we all love, is one that can be played for a lifetime. Fortunately for those coaches and players, there are stories like that of Bill Saunders that bring truth to such a statement. Saunders is a 93-year-old member of the Cliff Drysdale Tennis family at Bluewater Bay Tennis Center, located in Niceville, FL. Tennis has always been an integral part of Saunders’ life. For Saunders, tennis is more than just a game to be won or lost. It is, by all accounts, a way of life, and a long one at that! He attributes his good fortunes and health to the game. Bill’s tennis story began on the sidelines of a rural Virginia park, where he gleefully fetched balls for the local tennis pros as a child. Tennis’s early impressions on Bill did not materialize until after he returned from serving on behalf of the U.S. in World War II. Saunders said, “I came home from World War II and began my career with Eastern Air.”

Bill Saunders celebrated his 90th birthday at Bluewater Bay Tennis Center surrounded by Director, Gary Bertoldo, and other members and friends.

The man taught and hit with Bill day-in-and-day-out until the airline company decided to relocate Bill and his wife. Bill packed up his belongings and rekindled love of tennis and moved to Miami, FL. Saunders devoted most of his waking hours to his career. After working long hour days, Bill used his lessons at a park near the local fire station as a way to unwind. He continued to take lessons and refine his game. Bill did not realize it at the time, but tennis was soon to become one of the most important aspects of his life.

After the War, Saunders began a long and illustrious career with Eastern Airlines based out of Charlotte, N.C. “Someone from the operations department of Eastern Airlines came up from Miami and was a tennis player. Tennis became an integral and He taught me tennis,” Saunders said. treasured part of Saunders’ life upon 32

retiring from the airline company at the age of 62. Bill began channeling the same devotion he had given the company for more than 41 years into his tennis game. Under the tutelage of the local pro, Bill began competing at higher levels of the game. Saunders quickly racked up trophies at different tournaments across the state of FL. His tennis career is highlighted by his second place finish at a national championship tournament hosted by Lipton Tea in Hilton Head, SC. Saunders remembers feeling like Rod Laver, his favorite player of all time, the moment he reached the finals of the tournament.

He attributes his success on the court to his ability to move quickly. Recalling his time spent playing mixed doubles his wife, Saunders expounded that, “she would stand in one spot and I would run back and forth”, but he didn’t mind because he loved the physical component of competition.

Beyond the obvious physical benefits the game has to offer, Bill enjoyed the social aspect of the game as well. He recalls playing doubles with “some wonderful people”, including former Red Sox baseball player, Ted Williams. Some of Saunders’ fondest memories of the sport are not ripping a huge backhand winner down the line or raising a championship trophy, but rather the moments he shared with the “friends he made on [the] tennis court”. Tennis, while at the core of Bill’s life, is not the only way he has remained active in his later years. Bill and his wife frequent their local dance hall and clog the night away. Adapting the Game and Defying all Odds by Katie Steck

A 7-year-old member, Oliver Posada, has experienced more than most do in a lifetime. The middle child of Bess and Mauricio Posada, Oliver was born with an upper limb difference called symbrachydactyly. His parents have always told him that he can do whatever he sets his mind to. That is exactly what he is doing on the tennis courts at Weston Tennis Center. There are not many known reasons for his congenital limb difference. Experts hypothesize that he may have had a blood clot in his arm in utero that prevented the growth of his left arm. They also believe it could simply be part of his natural genetic code. Even with his left arm ending a couple of inches below his elbow, he has found a way to do everything he wants to do, including tennis. He plays, climbs, swims, and rides his two-wheel bike, just like most second graders. Oliver can handle questions about his limb difference from anyone. He enjoys proving himself to others who doubt his abilities. Oliver comes from a tennis family. His parents grew up playing and wanted their children to experience the game. The oldest son and Oliver began taking lessons a couple of years ago, and it was a hit! They continued with weekly group lessons. “I wanted the lesson to be about tennis, not about Oliver having to answer a million questions about his arm,” Beth Posada said. “Watching him on the tennis court is a true joy because he is really having so much fun.” They recently switched to private lessons in hopes of taking their games to the next level. As a child with an upper limb difference, Oliver knows 36

“Tennis is a fantastic way to connect with others and build friendship,” Beth added. “We think that is one of the best parts of the game.” While on the tennis court, Oliver is visibly having fun; smiling through the lesson, and letting himself laugh it off when he misses a shot. Oliver is working to develop his one handed backhand, which is difficult since he is only 7 and his size and strength are a challenge. The Posada family often watches The Posada family clockwise from the tennis as a family, and Oliver enjoys top: CDR J. This has enabled him to develop a quality of resourcefulness and creativity unmatched by most other kids his age. Oliver is testing different methods to hit his serve, but so far, a high toss from his right hand while he has his racquet ticked under his left arm gives him enough time to grab the handle of the racquet and develop his serving stroke. His serve seems to be the only obstacle he has in his game, but Oliver is confident that anything can be accomplished with time and practice.

Adversity is difficult for anyone to overcome, but for 7-year-old Oliver, adversity seems second nature. He has overcome all of the challenges his symbrachydactyly has thrown at him on his way to becoming a budding young tennis player.

instruction for many different kinds of sport skills. Oliver is perfecting a glove transfer, wherein he catches the baseball in his gloved hand and simultaneously transfers his glove under his shorter arm and retrieves the baseball to then throw it.

The Posada family focuses on how mistakes help people grow and learn. So, when you miss a shot on the court, it just means that you are giving yourself the opportunity to improve. Like most tennis parents, they hope that starting Oliver enjoys many other sports, but soccer is a favorite. CopperWynd Women’s Pro Challenge by Scott McCulloch

Womens’ Pro Circuit players are joined by fitness celebrity Shaun T and partner Scott Blokker following the event Pro Am.

In anticipation of our 2nd Annual CopperWynd Women’s Pro Challenge held at the beautiful CopperWynd Resort & Club in Fountain Hills, Arizona, the nerves were on edge and the excitement was high with a vision of growth and new doors opening for this year’s event. We welcomed our new partners and beneficiary of the tournament ACEing Autism into the mix. The nerves faded as months of preparation and hard work became a reality with the large 700 square foot banners going up, the dressing of the courts and the assembly of the volunteers. The first ball was struck and the Cliff Drysdale Team led by Nick Heron & Elliott Manton kept the tournament moving along like a well-oiled machine.
