ASPATRIA

ASPATRIA is located on the North side of Ellen Valley. There are panoramic views of Skiddaw to the south and the Solway Firth to the North. It is located on one of the most scenic areas of West Cumbria with easy access to the hills and lakes of the Lake District. The town’s history goes back to Viking times and it was also on a busy Roman Road. St. Kentigern’s Church stands on the site of a Norman church, built between 1130 and 1150, and possibly on the site of an earlier church. The church has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade II* listed building. The artist L.S. WIGTON

WIGTON is a market town at the centre of the Solway Plain between the Caldbeck Fells and the Solway Coast. It is an ancient settlement, it received its Charter in.1262. The town evolved from a medieval street plan, which can be still traced today along the narrow streets and quaint alleyways, leading to the Market Place which is centred by the George Moore memorial fountain. Of particular interest are the four bronzes around the fountain, the work of the preRaphelite sculptor, Thomas Woolner. St. Mary’s Church dates back to 1788 and has noteworthy stained glass windows. ALLONBY

ALLONBY is a small village located between Maryport and Silloth, in a designated Area of Outstanding Beauty. Its long sandy beach stretches across the Solway Estuary to the mountains of Southern Scotland. The Cumbrian Coastal Way passes through Allonby and it was also once on a Smuggler’s Route. There are several interesting buildings in the village the Old Baths, North Lodge, Christ Church, and the Reading Room ,erected in 1862. It was designed by Alfred Waterhouse, famous for designing Manchester’s Town Hall, and London’s Natural History Museum

SILLOTH

SILLOTH is a beautiful port town amid areas of natural beauty on the shore line of the Solway Firth. It is one of the finest examples of a victorian seaside resort in the North of England. Silloth has long been a popular tourist destination. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty and the sunsets on Silloth’s beaches inspired the romantic painter J.M.Turner. There is a large expansive green right in the centre which is used throughout the year to host many events and festivals. The areas largest annual festival is the Solway Music Festival located at Tarns arounfd five miles away. Sea fishing and watersports are also very popular.
