EDITOR’S LETTER

It’s July! We are right in the middle of long, hot days and afternoon thunderstorms. July also means it’s time for red, white, and blue and fireworks. Speaking of fireworks, we have put the dates and locations for fireworks around us on the Live Music and Events page! Make sure to check out this month’s Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School section. Mr. Mark Rendell has written his first article for us as the new principal of Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School. We thank him for taking time out of his first couple days in the office to introduce himself to all of us.

REC 225

NOT YOUR ORDINARY GAME NIGHT A friend of ours, Jo Jo Holstein, invited Tracee and I to come check out his new place in Cocoa Village called REC 225. I’ve known Jo Jo for years, so when he told me his new place was open and unlike anything else around here, we were excited to see it for ourselves. Our twenty-year-old son dropped by a couple of days before we did and came home raving about it. REC 225 is a bar/restaurant/ game room that is all about bringing friends and family together to interact and play games. Yes, you read that right…put your phones down and interact with each other. REC 225 offers delicious eats, cocktails, and beers plus a long list of games to garner everyone’s participation. They have indoor bocce, cornhole, pool tables, darts, and shuffleboard plus every table has a board game menu where you can choose from over 15 classic games. Best of all, the games are FREE to play.

Ok, we’ve got the details out of the way, so now let me tell you about the experience! The staff was warm and welcoming shouting out a, “Welcome to REC 225. Sit wherever you’d like.” as we walked in the door. Right away we both noticed the fun game room feel mixed with a slightly industrial vibe, but at the same time incorporating the 1930s architecture of the building. We pulled up to the bar and were immediately greeted by Sam who after grabbing our drinks was nice enough to teach us how to play a board game called Close the Box, which by the way I won! Oh yeah, make sure to ask Sam to do a few magic tricks for you; I’m still scratching my head about a couple of them. The crowd in REC 225 was very diverse and everyone seemed to be having a great time. You know what we didn’t notice, cell phones! Nobody was engaged with their cell phones. Instead, they were ac-

tually engaged with each other and playing games. That was GREAT to see. The concept of REC 225 was born when three entrepreneurs (pictured below), Joseph “Jo Jo” Holstein, Michael Trobagis, and Wesley Murray, came together with a vision for a new spin on an old concept and turned it into a reality. They wanted to bring friends and families together for game nights at a place where you can get great food, drinks and service. However, the dream isn’t quite complete yet; they are working on adding a patio, so the entertainment will continue... outdoors. Make sure to drop by for your next afternoon or evening out. It’s great for date night, meeting friends, or that rare family night!

MEET MARK RENDELL YOUR NEW CBJSHS PRINCIPAL Hello Everyone, I am Mark Rendell, and I am the new Principal at Cocoa Beach Junior-Senior High School. It is an honor and privilege to serve in this position. This is a special year for our community as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Mission. The space race and our nation’s endeavors in manned and unmanned flight have shaped the history of Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral. Cocoa Beach Junior-Senior High has certainly been a part of that history. In fact, Cocoa Beach High School was originally built to serve the families of the space program. Our students and families have always reflected the evolving makeup of our community as it has transitioned from the bedroom community of the Kennedy Space Center to a popular tourist destination for visitors from all over the world. We take great pride, “Beach Pride,” in being the educational hub for our community. While I may be new to Cocoa Beach, I am not new to Brevard. My wife, Heidi, and I moved to Brevard County in 1993, and it has been our home for most of the years since. All three of our children, Nathaniel, Lucas, and Sarah Grace, were born here. While a few years old, this is one of my favorite pictures of our family, and it was taken right here at Lori Wilson Park.

My tenure in Brevard Public Schools began as a teacher at Satellite High School, and stints as an assistant principal at Melbourne High, Eau Gallie High, and Cocoa High School. I then had the great fortune of serving as Principal at Titusville High School from 2001 to 2006. While I have also worked in other school systems in Florida and other states, I am very excited to be back in Brevard County and am thankful for the opportunity to lead the Minutemen of CBJSHS. Electric Vehicles and Charging Stations CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Zachary Eichholz Sustainability Manager, City of Cape Canaveral

The Space Coast EV Drivers are a local club formed in 2014 dedicated to helping promote, educate and showcase all electric vehicles (EV) to the public in Brevard County. Currently, the growing club has 127 members and 116 electric vehicles, including all electric motorcycles and conversions of formerly gaspowered vehicle models. They were also in attendance at last year’s Founders’ Day.

are located at City Hall (100 Polk Ave.), the Public Library (201 Polk Ave.), Manatee Sanctuary Park (701 Thurm Blvd.) and Banana River Park (901 Puerto Del Rio Dr.). The City will be installing six more dual charging stations within the next twelve months! This will put our Community ahead of any other municipality in the county in terms of the number of publicly available universal charging stations.

City of Cape Canaveral Staff spoke with club members at a recent meetup to inform them about what the City of Cape Canaveral has been doing in terms of progressing its own EV infrastructure and its future plans to help further accommodate this rapidly expanding transportation sector. EVs are of particular interest to the City due to their growing adoption by other municipal fleets, extremely low cost to refuel per charge, increased torque and power, low maintenance cost and much lower carbon dioxide emissions over their life cycles when compared to their gas-powered equivalents.

The City also utilizes one allelectric vehicle within its City fleet, a 2017 Ford Focus with a 115 miles of range. Soon the City will also be adding two new Toyota RAV4 hybrids to its fleet, with each capable of achieving over 40 miles to the gallon. As older fleet vehicles are retired, the City will continue to add more low and zero emissions vehicles. To view charging station locations, visit PlugShare.com or download the app to your device.

As part of our commitment to sustainability, the City of Cape Canaveral has four publicly available level 2 EV charging stations, each one containing two ports. These stations are compatible with all EV models on the market today and are free to use. These four charging stations 10

If you would like to find out more about the Space Coast EV Drivers Club and electric vehicles in general, come out to Cape Canaveral’s National Drive Electric Week event on Saturday, September 21st from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Manatee Sanctuary Park! This event is completely free to the public and there will even be test drives available. You can also checkout the club’s website here: spacecoastevdrivers.com.

It’s No Mystery Why Escape Rooms Are So Popular WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker, Editor, Cocoa Beach Explorer

You have 60 minutes. You and your team of private investigators must solve a decades-old cold case regarding the location of the millions of dollars stolen in the 1950 Great Brinks Robbery in Boston. Your team has finally located the outdated apartment of the prime suspect, now an old man, but the bigger mystery still remains—where did he hide the money? The back story of Escape Cocoa Beach’s 2325 Tremont Street is based on actual events that took place in January of 1950. Game players find themselves immersed in a story world filled with outdated décor, old furniture and period magazines clearly setting the scene of a suspect holed up for years since his 1950s heist. I promised not to reveal the secrets of the game, after all that would ruin it for everyone else, but I can say there were some very inventive hiding spots for essential clues and items including an “I think I know what I need to do, but I’m not doing it unless the gamemaster tells me to” moment.

Room Adventures at Escape Cocoa Beach

If you are an escape room newbie, you will probably find yourself with no idea where to begin. Just start trying things: open drawers, look for locks, look under/inside items, look for patterns. Know this, the key to successfully escaping any game room is communication. You must communicate with your team. Find a clue or pattern, shout it out! Find something but you’re not quite sure how it plays into the game, shout it out! It’s amazing how each team member, given the same clues, will think and put things together differently. JAIL BREAK

“It’s entertaining to watch how different groups handle the games.” Ryan DeFloria Creative Director at Escape Cocoa Beach

It’s inevitable that at some point in the game you will get stumped. The key is to never waste too much time before asking for a hint. All escape room games are monitored from the outside PER PERSON IN GROUP In a world where entertainby a “gamemaster” via a ment is now dominated by live feed allowing them to screens, the concept of a see and hear your game and PROMO CODE CCE19 live-action adventure where give clues to help you move expires 6/30/2020 players must work together to forward with solving the puzfind clues, solve puzzles and crack zle at hand. Rely on your gamcodes in order to escape the game emaster, and don’t be afraid to ask before time runs out is exactly the kind of for a clue. This was one of the hardest interactive fun needed. lessons I had to learn. Wasting 15 minutes on one clue is the difference in getting out or getHow does it work? ting skunked.

You have been wrongfully accused and arrested by a small-town Sheriff. He has you in a holding cell next to his office. You must find your way to freedom, while retrieving the evidence he holds against you.

ROCKET SCIENCE You and your family are touring an aerospace facility. You wander off and find yourselves in the office of a scientist who mysteriously vanished in the 1960’s. You have one hour to uncover the secret of his disappearance.

A group of players, usually 4-8, are briefed on the room’s storyline and rules (like no breaking things and don’t take the blank apart) by the “gamemaster”. The timer is set, the door shut (the doors are not actually locked) and then, game on.

On a personal note, I’ve now played all of Escape Cocoa Beach’s games. I’m not embarrassed to say I didn’t escape them all (yes, I was too proud and waited too long to ask for a clue), but I certainly had fun playing. One of my favorite rooms I’ve ever played: 2325 Tremont Street. Give it a try and you’ll see why.

BANK HEIST 11 men were convicted of Boston’s Great Brinks Robbery committed in 1950. Millions of dollars were stolen with little recovered. It is up to you to solve the mystery and recover the fortune.

MYSTERY OF THE BLACK DAHLIA In 1947 the body of an aspiring actress is found surgically mutilated near Hollywood, California. With little physical evidence, the case becomes one of Americas most notorious cold cases. Step back in time and rewrite history by helping to solve the crime.

SUSTAINABILITY IN THE CITY OF CAPE CANAVERAL

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Zachary Eichholz, Sustainability Manager, City of Cape Canaveral

In recent years you may have heard the word “sustainability” grow in usage throughout municipalities across the country, including in the City of Cape Canaveral. But what does it mean and why is its implementation not only important but VITAL to improving City operations and the wellbeing of residents? Sustainable development is commonly defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Many associate this phrase as only having to deal with environmental assets when in reality it actually deals with so much more. Sustainability is about balancing strong economic growth and cost savings with increased social equity while also protecting and even enhancing our natural surroundings. In keeping with the tenets of the City of Cape Canaveral Vision Statement and 2018 Community Survey, the City intends to be a leader in this emerging field so that the City can optimize its current operations while building resilient future. Many challenges will face our Community in the decades to come, including an increased risk of hurricanes, flooding and drought. Being on a barrier island set in a county with a growing population, the City must proactively prepare for these challenges. Sustainability practices can help do this! Luckily, City Staff has already begun the initial steps of drafting a sustainability action plan to help set the scope and direction of all future sustainability initiatives. Recently the East Coast Regional Planning Council completed a City-wide Vulnerability Assessment, the results of

which will go on to better inform the structure of the sustainability action plan. But the City already has a diverse portfolio of projects aimed at sustainable socioeconomic and environmental development. To help save one of the City’s biggest environmental assets, the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), the City of Cape Canaveral has a summer ban on fertilizer applications that runs from June 1st to September 30th. The City is also moving towards xeriscaping practices at its facilities. This is a landscaping practice in which native, drought tolerant plants are used with little to no sod, thereby reducing water consumption and the need for large amounts of fertilizer. A great example of this practice can be seen at City Hall and Xeriscape Park. To improve stormwater quality, the City constructed a series of exfiltration tanks placed under the Canaveral City Park baseball field, which included the installation of stormwater chambers beneath two outfield areas and one infield area of the park that capture approximately 931,000 gallons of water, preventing it from entering the IRL. Other sustainability-based projects include solar street lighting, four public dual EV charging stations (with more in the works!), the Zagster Space Coast Bike Share program, annual sea oat plantings, an active community garden and Mobi-Mats that allow beach access pathway for individuals of all abilities and wheelchair users.
