FROM THE MAYOR
MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E
Twenty eight years ago on July 6th, she said yes, and our journey together continues. Life is not always easy; it will be full of trials and tribulations, and I am so blessed to share it with my best friend who is always there for me— Happy Anniversary, Kelly (clearly I married up!)! Four years ago, I was given a second chance at life with the installation of 4 stents in my heart. If you have a family history of heart disease, please get checked for blockages. City updates: we are vetting bidders for the new Cocoa Beach Police building (this has been discussed for over a decade but was delayed due to recession). The parking garage is working out as expected with people using the new amenity, and local merchants are getting a boost in patrons (for God’s sake, the palm trees have a warranty, and if they don’t survive more suitable replacement trees will be installed as there is no room to move them west due to FDOT right of ways). We continue to tackle our long list of deferred infrastructure projects: Fischer Park renovations, country club remodel, rec center upgrades, sewer plant upgrades, building replacements, etc. Of significance to our impaired waterways has been the recent $6.6 million (over $2.2 million in grant funding awarded to the City for this project!) in upgrades to the city’s sewer plant including influent bar screens, biological treatment bypass piping, filter replacement, etc. These

upgrades will reduce nutrient loading of nitrogen and phosphorus into the Banana River Lagoon and enhance plant reliability and performance. The existing filters are over 30 years old and have been rebuilt but cannot be rebuilt again. New filters are much more efficient in capturing nutrients from entering the waterways. Also included are continued dredging
mulching blade on your mower and don’t blow the grass clippings into the street. They enter the storm drains and wind up in the river— please be part of the solution!
projects to remove muck from the waterways. The total costs of all these improvements are over $17.1 million. Kudos to city staff members Wayne Carragino and Brad Kelsow for securing over $10 million in grant funding to offset these improvements! Estimated reduction of nitrogen in our waterways is over 10,000 pounds. We are fortunate to have such quality city staff as every city in Brevard County is competing for these grants funds! These projects are expensive but must be done to ensure we continue to improve our water quality. Keep in mind, if you are on reclaimed water there is no need to use fertilizers on your lawn! Also, remember we have a fertilizer ban from June 1st – September 30th. Please use a
This month celebrates a momentous occasion in our nation’s history made right here on the Space Coast. The 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission! To commemorate this occasion the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation will be hosting an Astronaut Parade & Street Party on Saturday, July 13th commencing at 9:30 am. The route starts at 4th Street North and proceeds down South Orlando Avenue ending at 1st Street South with the street party downtown afterwards! Are Women Better Investors Than Men? Most of us would probably agree that men and women frequently behave differently, and these differences often show up in professional, family and social situations. Of course, this certainly doesn’t mean either gender has an advantage in these areas. However, here’s an interesting question: Do women possess attributes that may make them better investors? Some evidence suggests this may indeed be the case. Consider the following: Long-term focus – Women seem to focus more on long-term goals, according to some studies, whereas men may concentrate more on short-term track records of potential investments. Generally speaking, taking a longterm approach to investing is a good strategy because it can help you maintain discipline and avoid subjecting yourself to the dangers of overreacting to market swings. One such danger is selling an investment whose price may have dropped but may still have strong fundamentals and good prospects. Less frequent trading – A well-known study from the University of California found that men traded investments 45% more frequently than women. Other, more recent studies have produced somewhat different results, but the overall picture does seem to show that women do significantly less buying and selling than men. This tendency is important because frequent 8
trading can undercut a long-term, cohesive investment strategy. If you’re constantly buying and selling, you won’t give some investments a chance to achieve their full growth potential, and you might disrupt the diversification necessary for long-term success. More thoughtful decisions and more receptiveness to professional advice – Women take more time to make investment decisions than men, and more readily accept investment recommendations from financial professionals, according to a survey from InvestmentNews. And women are more likely to consult a professional financial advisor in the first place, according to a study from the Spectrem Group, a financial research firm. Given the number of factors involved in successful investing – setting long-term goals, evaluating risk tolerance, navigating volatile financial markets, diversifying investment portfolios, and so on – it’s important to get solid financial and investment advice from trained, experienced professionals.
Nonetheless, it’s not really possible to avoid all investment risk – and it’s probably not even desirable. In fact, there may well be a flip side to women’s risk avoidance, in that an overly conservative portfolio won’t produce the growth potential needed to achieve long-term goals. And this indeed is a danger to which women investors should be alert. Generally speaking, neither excessive risk nor excessive caution will serve investors well. A long-term perspective, avoidance of excess trading, willingness to take advice from professionals, and careful risk management – these characteristics of women investors can be of value to everyone. Consider putting them to work for yourself. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.
Greater risk aversion – When it comes to savings and investing, women are generally more risk averse than men, according to a large-scale survey by BlackRock, a global investment management firm, and supported by numerous other surveys and studies. Having a greater risk aversion can help women investors reduce the likelihood of incurring short-term losses from highly volatile or speculative investments.

THE DAY THE IMPO
WRITTEN BY: Tracee Baker Designer, Cocoa Beach Explorer
There is just nothing quite like a rocket launch. The anticipation of the countdown, the blindingly bright flames of ignition, and then the growing rumble of over 7 million pounds of thrust which culminates in a thunderous roar that you can feel as much as hear. Even for those of us lucky enough to grow up on the Space Coast, it never gets old. I grew up listening to my dad’s stories of his years (1964-1971) working at “The Cape”. Stories about the astronauts he met and the amazing things he witnessed; he was lucky enough to witness history firsthand. As my mom told me, “It was everyday stuff to us…we just didn’t realize the moment.” But a moment it was, and this July we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 and man’s first steps on the Moon! To celebrate this momentous accomplishment, the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation is hosting events from July 12-July 16 highlighting Apollo 11 and the exploration efforts that have followed. Downtown Cocoa Beach will be host to the Astronaut Parade and Street Party on July 13th with astronauts riding down A1A in Corvettes. Talk about 1960s nostalgia! Below is a timeline listing the activities the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation has planned. Some of the events are ticketed events (marked by the ticket icon). REC 225
NOT YOUR ORDINARY GAME NIGHT A friend of ours, Jo Jo Holstein, invited Tracee and I to come check out his new place in Cocoa Village called REC 225. I’ve known Jo Jo for years, so when he told me his new place was open and unlike anything else around here, we were excited to see it for ourselves. Our twenty-year-old son dropped by a couple of days before we did and came home raving about it. REC 225 is a bar/restaurant/game room that is all about bringing friends and family together to interact and play games. Yes, you read that right…put your phones down and interact with each other. REC 225 offers delicious eats, cocktails, and beers plus a long list of games to garner everyone’s participation. They have indoor bocce, cornhole, pool tables, darts, and shuffleboard plus every table has a board game menu where you can choose from over 15 classic games. Best of all, the games are FREE to play.
Ok, we’ve got the details out of the way, so now let me tell you about the experience! The staff was warm and welcoming shouting out a, “Welcome to REC 225. Sit wherever you’d like.” as we walked in the door. Right away we both noticed the fun game room feel mixed with a slightly industrial vibe, but at the same time incorporating the 1930s architecture of the building. We pulled up to the bar and were immediately greeted by Sam who after grabbing our drinks was nice enough to teach us how to play a board game called Close the Box, which by the way I won! Oh yeah, make sure to ask Sam to do a few magic tricks for you; I’m still scratching my head about a couple of them. The crowd in REC 225 was very diverse and everyone seemed to be having a great time. You know what we didn’t notice, cell phones! Nobody was engaged with their
WRITTEN BY: Doug Baker Editor, Cocoa Beach Explorer
cell phones. Instead, they were actually engaged with each other and playing games. That was GREAT to see. The concept of REC 225 was born when three entrepreneurs (pictured below), Joseph “Jo Jo” Holstein, Michael Trobagis, and Wesley Murray, came together with a vision for a new spin on an old concept and turned it into a reality. They wanted to bring friends and families together for game nights at a place where you can get great food, drinks and service. However, the dream isn’t quite complete yet; they are working on adding a patio, so the entertainment will continue... outdoors. Make sure to drop by for your next afternoon or evening out. It’s great for date night, meeting friends, or that rare family night!

MEET MARK RENDELL YOUR NEW CBJSHS PRINCIPAL Hello Everyone, I am Mark Rendell, and I am the new Principal at Cocoa Beach JuniorSenior High School. It is an honor and privilege to serve in this position. This is a special year for our community as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Mission. The space race and our nation’s endeavors in manned and unmanned flight have shaped the history of Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral. Cocoa Beach Junior-Senior High has certainly been a part of that history. In fact, Cocoa Beach High School was originally built to serve the families of the space program. Our students and families have always reflected the evolving makeup of our community as it has transitioned from the bedroom community of the Kennedy Space Center to a popular tourist destination for visitors from all over the world. We take great pride, “Beach Pride,” in being the educational hub for our community. While I may be new to Cocoa Beach, I am not new to Brevard. My wife, Heidi, and I moved to Brevard County in 1993, and it has been our home for most of the years since. All three of our children, Nathaniel, Lucas, and Sarah Grace, were born here. While a few years old, this is one of my favorite pictures of our family, and it was taken right here at Lori Wilson Park.
My tenure in Brevard Public Schools began as a teacher at Satellite High School, and stints as an assistant principal at Melbourne High, Eau Gallie High, and Cocoa High School. I then had the great fortune of serving as Principal at Titusville High School from 2001 to 2006. While I have also worked in other school systems in Florida and other states, I am very excited to be back in Brevard County and am thankful for the opportunity to lead the Minutemen of CBJSHS. Beat the Bugs and Summer Heat CONTRIBUTING WRITER: LeAnna Shows, Blue Water Screens
Let’s face it, outdoor living is what it’s all about here in the Central Brevard area. We choose to live where we live because of the beautiful weather yearround. But the Florida environment can be harsh, especially when it comes to our outdoor living areas. We definitely have our share of insects, we endure overwhelming heat, and we can expect constant exposure to UV rays. With such a diverse mix of environmental conditions, we sometimes have to be creative in the ways we capitalize on the best aspects of living where we live.
…by the press of a button, you can lower your screens to keep your area shaded and keep the insects…out. …BLUE WATER SCREENS… …everybody’s doin’ it!...
Year round, we Floridians want to enjoy the beauty of our backyards. When we think about our outdoor living space; our lanais or our porches, wouldn’t it be nice to have the option to open these spaces up in order to enjoy the outside, the fresh air, the surrounding nature and all its activities … in the shade and free of the insects? Blue Water Screens, LLC has assisted many area residents in accomplishing these exact goals by offering our MOTORIZED SCREENS which not only provide protection from the Florida environs but also add function to your space and provide continued support of your beautiful views all the while in comfort and style. Maybe it isn’t always easy to enjoy the sunset from your lanai while you are getting pelted by mosquitoes, or maybe you aren’t able to endure the heat of the afternoon sun beaming in your sliding glass doors or that one window on the east side of your home, and maybe you would like to give yourself a bit of relief when it comes to the oppressive afternoon heat on a Saturday afternoon...

Chores for Kids
Please send future column ideas to Dr. Deb at drdeborahfrey@yahoo.com
When I needed to earn spending money as a youngster, I folded a bucket of laundry for a nickel. I much preferred folding towels to the underwear bucket, because of the speed of completion. Ironing a load of Dad’s handkerchiefs earned me a dime. Raking leaves and shoveling snow earned additional coins. All of the children in my family received money for good grades, but weekly chores only earned us room, board, and free time. In the kitchen, I set the table, dried the clean dishes, and emptied the dishwasher of silverware. My tall sister emptied the glasses and dishes onto the high shelves, and my oldest sister and my mother handwashed the delicate dishes, pots, and pans. Weekly, I dusted the furniture and had one bathroom to clean while my other siblings completed their assigned tasks. In past columns, I have discussed how to help your child learn to be kind through modeling and to be more cooperative through play. An article by pediatrician Deborah Gilboa discussed thirteen steps a parent can take to help their child become a successful adult. At the top of the list was routine chores. According to Dr. Gilboa, children who are not responsible for chores will likely be unsuccessful in developing a strong moral character and tend to be selfish. As a parent, I know that it is difficult to be handsoff when your child doesn’t do a chore properly. However, it is a learning process that will help your child learn satisfaction in completing a job as well as valuable life skills. 20
CONTRIBUTING WRITER: Deborah Frey, Ed.D.
Before assigning chores, have your child work side-by-side with you. Little ones can hand you plastic cups out of the dishwasher or help you sort clothes by color for the laundry. Explain each step of the chore and have your child practice it until it meets your satisfaction. Once your child is ready to assume responsibility, block out a monthly calendar. Daily chores can be written in at the top or bottom of the month. Weekly chores will be written on the day of the chore. Feel free to give your child a weekly allowance, but make it clear that chores are a natural part of living in a family. As your child becomes more responsible and assumes chores, your burden will be reduced. If you begin early in your child’s life, doing chores will be a natural way for your child to help the family. If you begin when your child is older and he/she refuses to cooperate, remember that there are things that your child wants like electronics, playtime, toys, desserts, and activities with friends. Participating in these activities should depends on chores being completed in a timely manner. Children today are pushed to excel academically and physically, but we need to spend as much time building good character. When my daughter had her first internship, I told her to make herself indispensable. She emptied the trash and made sure the copiers had paper. She pitched in wherever and whenever she could. When she graduated from college the company hired her and several years later, when the company began laying off employees, they kept her because she was the only one who knew how to run the office machines. Responsible adults are critical to a functioning society. Let’s all raise our children to be valuable members.
Here is a list of appropriate chores for different ages.
0-3 years Pick up and put away toys. Make up a little clean-up song to sing with your child when it is time to tidy up. Don’t let your child pull out all of his or her toys at one time. Once he/she is done playing, he/she should put it away before getting something else off the shelf or out of the toybox.
3-5 years
Pick up clothes from the floor and place them in the hamper. Sort dirty clothes, by color, for the laundry. Help make the bed. Put clean forks and spoons in the silverware drawer. Feed and brush a pet.
5-7 years
Dust, put clothes away in drawers, and set the table for meals. Learn to clean windows, first with water in a spray bottle and then with glass cleaner. Take out the garbage, rake leaves, pick up sticks in the yard, and pull weeds.
7-10 years Clean a bathroom, sweep and mop the floors, vacuum, and begin cooking. When my youngest was seven and her sister was fourteen, we split up the cooking for each week. We ate a lot of hot dogs and spaghetti pie, the girls’ two specialties, but they learned how to cook and feed themselves.
10+ years
By aged ten, your child is capable of doing just about any chore around your house and yard.
