CONTENTS February 2019 20

Cocoa Beach Refresh, Renew, Restore Well, it’s February! Hard to believe we are in the second month of 2019. Time sure is flying by. Guess Mom and Dad were right after all— time does seem to move quicker the older I get. Oh well! Soon, we will know who the new Super Bowl champs are going to be this year, and all the new commercials that go along with that event. Then we move quickly on to Valentine’s Day! This issue of the Cocoa Beach Explorer we are continuing the series we are doing called Refresh, Renew, Restore. It will spotlight different places around town that are adding to the wonderful character of Cocoa Beach. We started the series last month with a look at the City of Cocoa Beach Parking Garage and this month’s issue we are focusing on the old Petro Plumbing building and the restoration it took to make it a mixed-use building.

CONTACT INFO

Also featured in this month’s issue is information on two great events. First up is the Space Coast Food Festival featuring the 34th annual Chowder Cook-Off. We will see what restaurant is crowned the Best Chowder of 2019. The next event you don’t want to miss is KBB’s 4th Annual Golf Tournament at Cocoa Beach Country Club. You still have time to sign up and play. Don’t miss Heather from Ron’s European Auto Repair’s article as she gives us a little insight to what is happening when your dashboard warning email: lights come on. Lastinfo@cocoabeachexplorer.com ly, make sure to check phone: out the Cocoa Beach La321-759-6064 crosse schedule posted in this month’s issue. Make your way out to one of the games and root on our boys and girls. GO BEACH!

As always, thank you for taking the time to read our magazine. Hope everyone has a great Valentine’s Day. Don’t forget to get that special someone a little something to make them feel special.

MALIK’S

FROM THE MAYOR

MESSAGE C O C OA B E ACH U P DAT E

BY MAYOR BEN MALIK

City of Cocoa Beach, February comes at us with its full winter fury (ok…maybe a bit exaggerated, but I am not a fan of cold ocean water temps) as we look for some glimpse of the arrival of springtime. My family enjoyed a trip up to the mountains of North Carolina and quaint towns of Chimney Rock and Lake Laurel (that 9 ½ hour drive is no joke though — 2 cars, 5 people and 2 dogs, 4 states, one day!). The highlight was the hike through Chimney Rock State Park. The 500 steps to the top was a bit nerve wracking as it seems we are all a bit apprehensive of heights, but the views were spectacular! Sometimes you just have to face your fears and move on! Of course, there were some fun challenges, the dirt road to the rental cabin seemed like a 70-degree incline and corkscrew turns going up a mountain with soft clay on the shoulders. We got stuck in the mud twice. Thankfully, my son-in-law, Luke, had his truck, and a nice local lent us their tow rope to get my car out of the mud. It was fun spraying the kids with mud as the tires dug in deeper trying to get traction! Thankfully, our hurricane experiences prepared us well for the power and water going out the last night due to blustery wind; we were ready to come home the next day to civilization!

My old-man advice to the younger parents is to spend as much time as you can with your children. It is so important that you are there to guide them; that is your job as parents (it is my biggest regret to have missed so much time with my family)! Teach them the importance of work ethic, kindness and humility, the rest will follow. Let’s make 2019 the best year yet! Thank you for your support and allowing me to serve as your Mayor. Please feel free to contact me with any suggestions at bmalik@cityofcocoabeach.com or my cell at 321.794.6668

I cannot believe our youngest son, Christopher James, will be 19 this month. Time seems to race by lately! I am so blessed to have such a supporting wife and great family (the fact the kids still want to go on vacation with us is really cool)! In the early 2000’s, I was so obsessed with running my own company and making money that I neglected my family and was hardly ever home. I was a completely self-absorbed arrogant tool. At the height of the housing meltdown, I kept the business going without taking a paycheck for a year draining all our savings and retirement accounts. When I finally closed the business and sold our house to move to Cocoa Beach, it was like God had given me a lesson in humility and a second chance to reconnect with my wife and family. Cocoa Beach saved my life and family which is why I am so engaged in our local non-profits and strive to make our community better for the future generations to come. I have learned to slow down and realize the truly most important things in my life are my family, faith and work (in that order)!

CALLING TEAM TRACI!!!

CONTRIBUTING WRITER: KARYLE GREEN, Ed.D. PRINCIPAL OF COCOA BACH JR./SR. HIGH SCHOOL

If you’ve been a part of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. HS over the past 13 years, you would have crossed paths with Traci Riddlehoover, our bookkeeper. Everyone knows Traci. She has kept our financial records clean, accurate and current. She works with coaches to make sure our teams are equipped, our concession stands are full and our officials are paid. She works with club sponsors to ensure that events can be held, students can travel and donations are credited to the proper accounts. Last year, Cocoa Beach was one of four schools in Brevard County without any audit comments. That’s a testament to Traci’s knowledge, efficiency and work ethic! They say that things can change in an instant. That’s what happened to Traci on December 4, 2018, when she was involved in a single-car accident on the way to work. Traci was taken to Holmes Trauma Center with multiple injuries including those to her C5 and C6 vertebrae. She underwent surgery that afternoon to repair broken bones in her neck and other soft tissue injuries. The initial prognosis was bleak – paralysis from the neck down. But since then, there have been some positive signs. Traci now has use of her arms, but not her hands. She is not able to walk. Unfortunately, Traci’s doctors are not sure if she will ever regain use of her hands or be able to walk again. She is currently in a rehabilitation hospital that specializes in spinal cord injuries. Much of this treatment and rehab that she needs is not fully covered by her insurance.

Photo provided by Karyle Green

There is so much that is needed to support her rehabilitation. Not only monetarily, as insurance does not fully cover costs, but in the form of manpower to design and retrofit her house for wheelchair accessibility, a van that is wheelchair compatible, and even a wheelchair to help her get around. If you have expertise in the area of construction or know someone who does, or if you have an organization willing to take on a cause, or if you know Traci personally, please consider finding a way to support the efforts to help Traci be mobile! With continuing specialized rehab and therapies, it is the hope that she will regain as much function as possible.

When To Take Your Car Everyone can see that vehicles have become sophisti-

cated pieces of equipment. There are as many systems in them as there are in the human body. The comparison is not that extreme nowadays. Vehicles are like bodies – everything communicates. There is a monitoring system that lets you know when something’s wrong. Every system pretty much has its own communication-type of computer for the parts in that system and they tell the central gateway, a.k.a. brain, when an issue occurs. That’s when you see the warning light and you take your sophisticated piece of equipment to the technician, a.k.a. doctor. A check engine light is a warning light to let you know there is an issue with one of the operating systems in the vehicle. However, reading the code does not always provide a solution. Sometimes tests are needed beyond the initial scan because most systems have several parts that can fail and cause the code. Just like medical testing, the certainty is the most important thing. Find out exactly what is wrong and fix it. (What a perfect world that would be!) For more information about the future

of vehicles, check out this article which has some great information about computer systems in cars (https://www.recode. net/2017/5/23/15681058/digital-car-automotive-industry-software-designed-disruption). If there is an electrical issue, testing may have to be done directly at a module’s connections to the rest of the system and that takes time. Leaking coolant can come from several different parts. Hard-to-find oil leaks may need tear-down time as you cannot see every seal on an engine just from opening the hood or looking underneath. Be aware that your vehicle needs nutrition (regular oil changes and good fuel), check-ups (maintenance beyond oil changes) and a good doctor (your favorite technician or shop). Stay healthy!

BY DOUG BAKER

THE METHOD Thousands of volunteers, donations from supporters and fundraisers

KBB works tirelessly throughout Brevard County maintaining their mission to keep Brevard beautiful, and Cocoa Beach is a recipient of a great number of those tireless efforts. Speaking with Bryan Bobbitt, Deputy Executive Director of Keep Brevard Beautiful, we learned some of the specific benefits of KBB here in Cocoa Beach. Did you know there are 110 swinging trash bins on Cocoa Beach? Well, neither did I! Until speaking to Mr. Bobbitt, I never thought it is KBB that maintains those bins during Cocoa Beach’s peak tourist season. From March until October, twice a day, KBB empties every one of them. They also maintain the rolling trash carts located at the end of Minutemen Causeway. KBB also hosts several “adopt a shore” teams in the Cocoa Beach area as well as several community beach cleanups each year.

In 2018, KBB removed over 433,000 pounds of trash from Cocoa Beach. In October, they removed 100,000 pounds of dead, rotting fish from Brevard’s beaches as a result of the Red Tide. However, not everything left on our beaches is trash. Many times, usable items such as beach toys and towels are picked up by KBB. Toys and other usable items are donated to local thrift stores, and the towels are donated to local animal shelters for bedding. For those needing community service hours, KBB plays a vital role. KBB provides cleanup supplies and tracks hours for local students looking to fulfill scholarship community service requirements. Not only does KBB work with local students, but they also work with volunteers needing court ordered community service hours.

Come out and participate in the FUN and SUPPORT Keep Brevard Beautiful at our annual fundraiser!

For more information contact Tammie Lizon at 321-6310501 extension 204. All funds generated from this event will be used locally in support of KBB’s mission of beautification, recycling and educational programs in Brevard County. Dragons are a large part of the Chinese New Year with performers in parades wearing masks or holding large dragon puppets. An easy and cute Chinese dragon is pictured below. Downloadable dragon face templates are available on the Internet or draw your own. Color the face and cut it out. Cut colored construction paper into strips and fanfold them to make them pop out. Glue them to the back of the dragon face. Glue a piece of cardboard on the back of the dragon face and tape a dowel rod to the back. Now, you have a dragon mask!

think your neighbors are dressed in red, festive clothing a little too early for Valentine’s Day, but they might just be celebrating the Chinese New Year. This year, Chinese New Year begins on February 5th and continues for 15 days, culminating in the Festival of the Lanterns. Celebrations for the Lunar New Year include customs bringing good luck, good fortune, wealth, prosperity, and happiness.

Cute pigs for the new year can be made by folding pink paper into cootie catchers. Cut out oval noses of contrasting pink for the noses and ears. Add white circles for eyes and add details with black marker.

Each year a Chinese zodiac animal is the symbol for the year. The 12 Chinese zodiac animals are: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. This is the year of the pig. During the 15 days, most people eat fish dishes, since a fish is a symbol of good luck, wealth and a healthy life. Dumplings, oranges, dried fruit, long noodles, and sweets are also considered lucky food.

Children’s Celebrating Chinese New Year on February 5!

REFRESH, RENEW,

The Old Petro

C

ocoa Beach Refresh, Renew, Restore is a series of articles which feature buildings and places around Cocoa Beach that are reinventing themselves in different ways to add to the character of this great little town. In return, these renovations are helping to keep our little slice of paradise the perfect place to live, work, and play. Last month, we introduced you to the first feature in this series. We spotlighted the new Downtown Parking Garage that is slated to be open in early summer. This month, we take you on a journey through the renourishment of the old Petro Plumbing building. We all remember the yellow Petro Plumbing building on the southbound side of A1A in Cocoa Beach. Petro Plumbing moved to Merritt Island and put this iconic building up for sale. When the forsale sign went up, Rick and Andrea Bastien started the ball rolling on their new labor of love! Rick was recently retired and looking for a project; boy did he find one! This was the couple’s first venture into any kind of remodeling or construction, but they had a vision and the dedication to see the job to completion.

FORE AFTER

RESTORE Plumbing Building

I would like to mention a few local people who were very instrumental in the building completion.

In late May of 2017, the Bastiens closed on the property, and by December of the same year, they were well underway transforming the old commercial warehouse building into the beautifully rejuvenated mixed-use structure of today. The updated location was set to host businesses on the bottom floor and two living units on the top floor. The entire structure was gutted and fitted with custom-built steel beams and trusses in order to support the new second floor. The fact that the building was being constructed as a mixed-use building brought about its own set of challenges such as internal firewalls and a special fire sprinkler system on every level including the attic. Of course, like always happens with any well-laid plan, delays occurred sending a ripple effect through the entire construction process since many times one project had to be completed before the next one could begin. Before construction was completed, Rick and Andrea obtained tenants for the firstfloor commercial areas of the building. Oasis Shaved Ice and Infinity Yoga and Ayurveda jumped onboard to utilize the brand-new

space! With tenants signed for the new areas, the focus became getting the first floor completed as quickly as possible. Both businesses opened on March 1, 2018— only four short months after construction started. With the first floor complete, focus could be turned back to the upstairs apartments which are used for BNB/short-term rentals. Rick buckled down and focused on the construction while Andrea turned her attention to outfitting the units for a perfect get-a-way in Cocoa Beach. Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist and estate sales became weekend rituals as Andrea began filling their home’s garage with furniture, decorations, and other necessities for a rental home.

from Rick Bastien

—Tim & Mike Mangin, owners of American Custom Restoration, Cocoa Beach. They did the complete demolition and build-out of both floors & the massive deck in the back. They did most of the construction work and did an awesome job. —Jim & Laura Emory, owners of Keystone Engineering, Cocoa Beach. Our initial partners who helped get us started and provided us with the excellent architectural drawings and advice. —Bob Hoog, owner of Hoog Electrical Corp. of Cape Canaveral. —Tech Systems Roofing & Waterproofing, Inc. of Melbourne. Installed the new roof and painted the building. —Matt Wagy, owner of Matt Wagy Services, Inc. of Cocoa Beach. Installed all of the carpentry, finished and detailed work in all four units, including all cabinetry, doors, molding, second story flooring and all custom woodwork items. —Barrett Custom Fabrication of Melbourne completed the custom railings & Bahama shutters. Our two commercial tenants, Stephanie and John with Infinity Yoga and Ayurveda and Vicki Tyner with Oasis Shaved Ice, are long-time Cocoa Beach residents and business owners. Like us, they saw the potential of the building’s character and location to enhance their own downtown businesses.

September 1, 2018, the date the Bastiens received a certificate of occupancy for the second-floor units, must have seemed like a national holiday to them. Months of planning, organizing and hard work had finally come to an end for them, and for Cocoa Beach, we have a beautifully rejuvenated iconic building enhancing our community.
