7. I use a mixture of 10 drops each Peppermint EO and Deep Blue (and fill a roller bottle up the remaining way with Fractionated Coconut Oil) as a headache deterrent. Thanks Becky, from Organizing Made Fun, for the recipe!) This combo has a wonderful, powerful cooling effect on those headaches that are a little worse than your normal tension headache.

9. DigestZen can be used to help digestive function. I personally use it in place of Prilosec to control acid reflux (3 drops in a veggie cap, once a day for me) 10. Use them to create simple, but very effective household cleaners.

DOTERRA NATURAL LIVING Ms. Lawrence Publisher

dōTERRA’s Family Physician Kit is a collection of ten nurturing essential oils, including six single oils and four oil blends.

20 Ways to Use doTerra Family Physician Kit 1. Use Lavender EO to help your family sleep. Place a drop in the palm of your hand, rub it between your hands, and then rub your hands on your loved ones’ pillows before bed. It will not only help them go to sleep, but also stay asleep. Our boys now remind me to oil their pillows if I forget! 2. Lavender and Melaleuca EOs can be used to help treat Pink Eye. 3. Peppermint and Lavender can be used together to help relieve tension headaches (I use this combo a lot. It’s my favorite scent!) 4. Peppermint and Lavender can also be used to open your sinuses in the morning. 5. Create fun, simple, cheap room sprays with variations of these EOs! 6. Lavender can be used to calm itching from bug bites, or to treat sunburn.

11. On Guard EO blend has been found to kill strains of MRSA and H1N1, and it’s perfectly suited to help fight off colds, or even just prevent them from coming at all. It can be taken orally (I use either a veggie cap or doTERRA is now offering them in small beadlets that can be swallowed). You can also use On Guard in household cleaners, and it can be bought from doTERRA in a foaming hand wash that I just love! 12. Melaleuca is very effective to treat an occasional pimple. Just place one drop in your hand and dab it on the infected area. 13. Breathe has been known to help clear the sinuses, stop snoring, and clear congestion. 14. Deep Blue is the only oil I’ve found that gives me relief from the pain of Meniere’s Disease (an inner ear issue that causes me ear pain several times a month). My husband loves how it relieves muscle strain after his workouts. 15. Frankincense can be used in a Neti Pot to help clear sinuses (I’ve tried this once combined with Eucalyptus – an oil NOT in the FPK – and really liked it). Just used one drop each along with my sea salt). 16. Peppermint is a great breath freshener and a natural stimulant. Try breathing it in the car next time you get drowsy instead of stopping at Starbucks. 17. Lavender is great for treating cuts and bruises 18. A few drops of Lemon EO on the nose can aid in opening sinuses. 19. Taking two drops each of Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint in a veggie cap each day can help with seasonal allergies. 20. Next time you have a headache, take a shower or bath and add 1-2 drops of Peppermint EO to the water/on the bottom of the shower floor. The aroma really helps! Add some Lavender EO to your Peppermint bath water for a refreshing sunburn relief bath. Visit and Shop Naturally Online http://mydoterra.com/tamlawrence

PRINCESS KEISHA OMILILANA INTERVIEW

by Nisha Ray

Did you know this is the decade for people of African Descent? You didn’t know that did you? Did you know there is a spotlight on Women who are birthing the Decade? Bet you didn’t and don’t feel bad because I had no clue of this either until an associate advised me to check out the United Nation site and see all of the things coming. The United Nations declared 2015-2024 to be the International Decade for People of African Descent December 10, 2014. While everyone was fussing that Black History is only one month a year they were not aware that all people of African Descent across the world will not only be celebrated but policies will be created across the world on behalf of Black people. Part of this initiative will be the UN holding a talk on Global African Women Birthing the Decade which I will be attending. As I looked into this I started thinking that African American women have been making a stance and being a voice for people in their industry that look like them. Out of these thoughts and research my series on the Regal Black Woman was born. Exposure Magazine will be shining a spotlight on these women who are not only the definition of Regal as defined by Webster Dictionary but meets my standards of being a woman who is beautiful, smart, talented, has faith, and is active in her community and puts her family first. As I looked for this woman I came across Princess Keisha Omiliana who is wife to Prince Kunle Omilana of Nigeria . Yes, an actual Princess who is not just royal in name but royal in manner.

Princess Keisha Omililana, from Inglewood, California and earned her fashion degree in Chicago and is now a successful model. She is the known as the “Pantene Girl” the first African American woman to be featured in three consecutive commercials. The Working Princess as she is called has worked with major brands such as L’Oreal, Maybeline, Revlon, and Cover Girl. She has walked runaways internationally as well as for Dubai Fashion Week. Read on to discover what makes Princess Keisha Omilana a Regal Black Woman beyond her title. Exposure: For all of our readers out there can you tell them who Princess Keisha/The Working Princess is? Princess Keisha: *Everything there is to know about me is in my bio on my website. Please visit www.keishaomilana.com to see who #TheWorkingPrincess truly is. Exposure: Can you tell Exposure readers about the businesses that you and your husband Prince Kunle of Nigeria own? Princess Keisha: *My husband and I own Wonderful Media LLC and we are working on several new projects that I can not mention just yet. But please follow me on Twitter and LIKE my Facebook page for all of our upcoming announcements. Exposure: How is it being married to a Prince and working with him as well? Princess Keisha: *It is a blessing to be able to work with your spouse. My strengths are his weakness and his strengths are my weakness. You can’t get anything past him because you have to get past me and vice versa. The fact that he is a Prince is really just a bonus. The truth is, he is my Prince not because he was born into royalty, but because of how he treats me and always puts family first.

Exposure: You were born in a normal family in California how did your life prepare you to be who you are today? Princess Keisha: My life was very normal however, there was NOTHING normal about me! I was such a little pre Madonna and my sister and Mommy love to tell stories of just how prissy I was. They did not understand me then but they see my life now and they both agree it all makes sense. If your child has something special, different or corky about them, let them be. Please do not try to change them. They are more than likely preparing themselves for who they will become when they grow up. Exposure: If anyone told the younger you that you would grow up to be a Princess would you have believed them? Princess Keisha: *NO! However, that is only because I would have said, “But I’m already a Princess.” I truly thought I was, behaved like I was and told everyone I was a Princess. It was very annoying for my family I’m sure. Exposure: What was the hardest thing you have had to endure or overcome and how did you get through it? Princess Keisha: I must admit that I have been extremely blessed to not have had to endure much. It was hard for me to continue to be told, “No thank you. We already have a black girl.” by EVERY top modeling agency in NYC. When I finally signed with an agent I then had to endure being shut out of certain fashion shows, add campaigns and commercials because of their lack of diversity. I simply kept at it, I never gave up, I kept my faith, I knew that I would have favor in the eyes of man and I wasn’t afraid to leave NYC to travel and work where the love was.

Exposure: I see you are on panels and events about Diversity in your industry why is that important to you? Princess Keisha: Being Black in the fashion industry can be depressing at times if you let it be. So, it’s very important to express the need for diversity in everything that I am passionate about. Particularly the arts as I’m an Artist. Exposure: Princess Keisha I applaud your efforts in speaking out for others who look like you and I see you have even taken a stance on social media about social issues beyond your work such as #blacklivesmatter why did you feel it was important to add your voice to such issues?

PrincessKeisha: Well, I have a black son who is lovable and cute as a button now, but in ten years time he will be 18. The thought that there are people in this world who think his life has no value because of the melonin in his skin is totally unacceptable. I will fight until the end of time for him and every other black child to feel and know they matter. Exposure: As a Mother myself your heart for children and philanthropy work on their behalf was important reason why I thought of you as a Regal Black Woman. Tell our readers about your philanthropy work. Princess Keisha: I try to be a voice speaking for children who are voiceless. I work with various charities here in the US, in Africa, Asia and Europe. One of the main reasons why we decided to make Cyprus our hub is that it is centrally located to all four

continents. As an artists, I also support the arts along with education, building self worth, ADIS and Malaria awareness as well as health care for women. A few of my favorite charities are Same Sky, Kechie’s Project, Princess Grace Foundation and iGirl co founded by my sister Missy Bolden. Issue you speak of on diversity or #blacklivesmatter because of endorsment deals and fear of how it will affect their brand. How did your comments and stance affect your brand? Princess Keisha: As a public figure one must always be very careful and “politically correct” which I try to do. Nothing that I have spoken out about has affected my brand in a negative light. Exposure: Princess Keisha you mentioned your son and speaking of him as I look through your social media most of your pictures are of your family so I can tell that your family is very important. How do you keep that balance with your children and give them a strong foundation to grow on? Princess Keisha: Family is very important and my husband and I have a family first policy. So there really is nothing to balance because if whatever is brought to me will not benefit my family, I want no part of if. My husband feels the same way. My children see and feel this so their foundation is strong and set for life. Exposure: What is the legacy you are looking to leave behind for your children and the world? PrincessKeisha: Good name is better than silver and gold. I want my children to know that I always

put God first, worked hard, lived out my dreams, never settled for less than I was worth, never sold my soul and provided the keys to success, good health and great wealth. Exposure: Your faith and the spiritual principles you are looking to instill in your children stick out to me. Tell me how your faith has helped you to get to where you are and where you are going? Princess Keisha: My faith is the center of everything I do. Thank God for that because in the fashion, media and art industry there are many disappointments and let downs. I pray and thank the Lord first thing every morning. I do not sleep without giving thanks. So when the enemy, haters and naysayers flex their muscles to try to stop or block me from achieving my goals, I soar far above the very goal they all tried to block. My faith is the only reason I am where I am today and have achieved what I have and will in the future. Exposure: Your a wife, mother, philanthropist, model, business woman...How do you manage to juggle all of these roles and still have time for yourself? PrincessKeisha: That is the magic question! I read the book The Artist’s Way when we moved to Dubai from NYC. The book introduces “Artist’s dates” and explains their importance. One day a week I leave the house and spend a few hours all to myself. This helps me not to ever feel overwhelmed and I am always excited about knowing I will have time for myself. I also write three pages freehand every morning after I pray.

THE STARFISH

Throwers The Jesse Roesler Interview By Seven Okema Gunn

Jesse Roesler is the creator/director of “The Starfish Throwers”. He follows three people from various backgrounds as they try take on poverty and hunger throughout the world and in the U.S. This documentary provides insight into the lives of these individuals and their noble quest to make the world better. “Powerful, direct and heartrending, The Starfish Throwers explores how three of the world’s most fiercely compassionate individuals struggle to restore hope to the hopeless in unexpected and sometimes dangerous ways. Continents apart, a sixth grader, a top chef and retired school teacher fight what seems an unwinnable war until they discover their impact may reach further than their action.” –imdb. How did you know that you wanted to be a director? Jesse Roesler: I was interested in high school. Then, I went to the University of Minnesota. Unfortunately, resources were scarce within the journalism department and in town I tried to get my hands on as many films as I could. I didn’t want to do TV necessarily but, more interested in character and content. Filmmakers’ documentaries inspired me to create in Minneapolis and make short films. I’ve worked on several documentaries but some of my

most notable films made are (2001) 23 minutes, (2010) Man and the Machine and my first feature (2014) “Starfish Thrower.” JR: I had a real passion for the project “Starfish Throwers.” This movement of helping humanity and philanthropy suggests a lesson from the poem “The Colosseus”. It’s about the statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. More importantly, what they represent. Freedom from oppression and the act of kindness toward our fellow brother and sister. “Give me your tired, your hungry, your yearning masses to be free.” When I heard about what Allen Law was doing, I was immediately drawn to his acts of generosity. “Love One Another,” is his motto and what he lives by. He drives around his car and gives sandwiches to those in need. He also gives advice and support to those who seek it. I told him “I’d love to tell your story.” At first he was not interested, then, a year and a half went by. After he saw that I was genuinely interested in his cause and proved that he was inspiring others, he got on board. He started with sandwiches and then gradually grew support by gaining national sponsors. Allen believes that all the people have a common bond. Similar in many ways. And

that “Food is love”. Khrishnan and Katie also became nationally recognized and internationally recognized by their accomplishments through giving. Khrishnan helps to clothe, groom, shelter, and feed the poor in his country and in the USA. “Akshaya is an Indian development foundation committed to helping the helpless, homeless, sick, elderly, mentally ill and destitute in Madurai, India by providing healthy food, care, and opportunity to rehabilitate in order to restore human dignity.” Katie, while in elementary school (9 years old at the time) founded “Katie’s Krops”. Now, she has helped create over 500 gardens in all 50 states. It started with one little school homework assignment. Katie says it is her mission “To end hunger”. How long did it take to make the film? JR: It took 3 1/2 years to make the film. All 3 philanthropists got media attention. Allen got attention locally handing out sandwhiches around town in the beginning, then word got out. CNN had covered these stories. Khrishnan’s exposure helped him overcome the obstacles of going against the caste system. Katie had gotten discovered through her gardens. When Katie won the Clinton award more recognition came in with grants and donations totaling up to $200, 000. How was this project funded? Melody Gilbert was the producer. She began teaching in Bulgaria. She was involved as my mentor and funding came as she applied

for many different grants in Minnesota/ New York. The Jerome Foundation project gave money and we won the Minnesota State Arts award. We all were personally invested. We looked at documentary work and creative agency funding. Finally, we added to the funding our Kickstarter campaign. We were lucky that we have the Film Transit New York and Montreal to help sponsor the project. We did this because were not able to find tradition broadcasting resources. What type of recognition has “Starfish Throwers” received? JR: Big recognition component. We are not doing a standard documentary. We don’t have the resources to do this. We have received good responses in Japan, Sweden, Switzerland and Israel. People can sign-up and support the documentary and movement. It’s an ever evolving theatrical world model. ICN and DOD. The independent world is constantly evolving. Theatre attendance for documentaries and grassroots online, grows if you get enough interest, the people will come. How did you hear about the Midwest Independent film festival? JR: Melody talked to the owner, Michael McNamara and he was excited about the project and very supportive. Do you still keep in touch with philanthropists? JR:Katie had her 16th birthday and we connected then. She travels a lot and has been connecting/meeting with people at the film festivals. Minneapolis premier, she got to meet Mr. Allen. He is now cancer

free and still out at night handing out sandwiches. Khrishnan is volunteering in the USA and his home is full of 450 people that he is helping. We continue to keep contact with these amazing people. The wonderful thing is the bond that we have formed. Through this project we have met so many people, toughed so many lives. You are spending time with them. The process of discovery is phenomenal. Every section of the film is different, but they all connect in a powerful way. They are all serving humanity. We often keep in touch with Katie and Allen. This has turned out to be more than I thought it would be. I’ve met some incredible people. They have posed an unsolvable question. What would you give to fight a battle you could never win? When you’re young despite the odds? What motivates them? I searched for people with very different backgrounds that stood out among the rest. This grew into something bigger than all of us. Something that embodies humanity. Your impact doesn’t end with your own actions, like these three people. “Pay it Forward” and the “Ripple Effect”. It’s not planned. It’s magical and has exceeded our expectations and has bigger than what I could have ever imagined. One thing about documentaries is that they are far-reaching. We have been to over 25 film festivals including USA, Europe and Asia. “Starfish Throwers” is taking on it’s own life and constantly evolving before our eyes.

The story of the Starfish Thrower is an old folktale, but is a great less

“In a pool of sand and silt a starfish had thrust its ar was holding its body away from the stiflin “It’s still alive,” I ventured.

Later, the narrator says: ...”On a point of land, I found the star thrower...I spoke once briefly. “I understand,” I said. “Call me another thrower.” Only then I allowed myself to think, He is not alone any longer. After us, there will be others...Perhaps far outward on the rim of space a genuine star was similarly seized and flung...For a moment, we cast on an infinite beach together beside an unknown hurler of suns... We had lost our way, I thought, but we had kept, some of us, the memory of the perfect circle of compassion from life to death and back to life again.” (The Star Thrower, p.181) This story is very poignant. We are not alone in the world. All it takes is a connection and one person to make a difference. Because we are all connected in some way. When we help our brother or sister, we are helping all of humanity become a little bit better.

ENCORE

The anticipation of the promoter craved sequel(s) to the unofficial “fight of the century”.

By Justin Dukes With all modern public spectacles, whether in cinema or music, politics or sports, as the American way or rather, the way of entertainment would have it, there can no longer be just a standalone classic without an equally riveting follow up routine. Long before any bell could sound or ticket be sold, the projected income of the Mayweather-Pacquiao laced boxing bout of this generation deemed this fight an instant classic to promoters and all other profiting parties as far as their pocket books were concerned. Now all they can ask themselves is how far-fetched envisioning the draw for Mayweather-Pacquiao part two resembling its predecessor would be considering the present generation’s dwindling interest in the sport. The newly crowned 2009 WBO welterweight title holder, Manny Pacquiao being set to clash with undefeated 5 Division World Champion, Floyd Mayweather Jr. served as an ideal backdrop for Mayweather-Pacquaio, presenting both pugilists at the peak of their powers, also leaving the door open for future matches. The peaking interest of the match at the time also would have drawn staggering

numbers, especially considering the projected revenue of today for a match delayed by several years. During the time, Pacquiao’s documented exploits in music, acting and politics, as well as the natural order of aging moved both fighters slowly away from what we knew them to be. A 200 million dollar purse to be split by the fighters, requiring a $250,000 line of credit for ringside seats, and the absolute cheapest seats costing $1,000: the actually scheduled Mayweather-Pacquiao brawl undeniably either has interest levels at an all-time high, or has the public convinced possession of currency is a burden that HBO and Showtime should only bare. Regardless of the perception, this fight will be marked as possibly the most profitable boxing event in history. “The calls I’m getting are unbelievable, I could spend the rest of the morning on the phone and sell out the entire place.” said boxing promoter, Bob Arum. The players in this widely polarizing drama in Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. and Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao, from two obviously different worlds, and more importantly with two perceived contrasting dispositions complete this story for the unassuming spectator. Mayweather serves as the betting favorite to the fight as well as the projected villain of the story due in most part to his undefeated boxing record and his sometimes subtle and other times not so subtle hubris in what he has earned. Pacquiao in variance fits the role of the underdog: Quiet demeanor with humbling blemishes on his impressive boxing record.

Ultimately, the compelling elements of both athletes has left a divide within the public, with some choosing to side with the underdog and many siding with their pocket books. “I’m favoring Mayweather for this one. I think it’s something that everybody’s been waiting for,” said retired NFL receiver Terrell Owens. “Styles make fights. Manny by late KO or decision.” worded former Boxer, Gerry Peñalosa. Other notable faces such as rapper 50 Cent, Boxing greats Ricky Hatton and Bernard Hopkins, and Gregg Daniel of True Blood voiced their picks on the fight, with others like boxing legend Muhammad Ali and actor Mark Wahlberg taking more neutral stances voicing support for the reinvigoration of the sport itself. Serving as a blessing and a curse, Mayweather-Pacquiao undoubtedly will boost the sport of boxing’s revenue stream, but it also takes attention away from many other relevant matches occurring in the sport, thus exposing this match’s value catering more to seekers of entertainment over boxing purists. The average person walking the street can tell you who Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquaio is, but once their light dims from age or defeat, the already low levels of interest in boxing will again begin to dissipate even further, making the need for a rematch between the two come across as force feeding. What Top Rank and Mayweather productions are likely aware of is that the likelihood of these two boxing standouts being seen in the ring together for a second occasion is with a controversial cliffhanger outcome to the May 2 fight, or in other words, a Mayweather loss. The revenge angle will likely bring

a large portion of viewers back, but the allure for the sport of boxing will still remain in question. Observational acuity will be the deciding factor in whether the world needs a Mayweather-Pacquiao part two. From a financial standpoint it makes sense, but even that logic would raise concerns from boxing faithful of diminishing the event, in comparison to the names of classic feature films becoming damaged by too many money driven sequels. While this fight will assuredly have supporters in some form or fashion clamoring for an encore performance of Mayweather-Pacquiao, promoters marketing campaigns to this present generation this time around may be selling the sport of boxing as the undercard to the main event.

IF YOU HAVE THE PASSION YOU HAVE THE POWER

Start the Business! Written by Robin Simmons

Owning a business is a common goal; it’s ambitious, empowering, liberating, inspiring, lucrative and attainable for everyone. Now, that we have that out the way…owning a business is the most challenging professional adventure you will ever make. Business ownership is exhausting, depleting and requires continuous attention, it’s the tireless passion of an entrepreneur that pushes you from start up to success. Only passion near obsession, should excite you to move forward in business, without it you’ll easily be discouraged. According to www.Bloomberg.com , 80% of small businesses fail within the first 18 months, 80%! The good news is if you have the passion, you have the power and your insane idea can explode just like Starbucks, Spanks, Molly Maids or Carols Daughters. Be encouraged, we each have a unique purpose, for this unique time and if you remove your distractions…those things that add no value or progress to your, you will identify yours.

You are your company. Where Do I Start? You have a vision, great!! Identify how your idea is unique, improved or new. Evaluate the market for demand and niche and be able to concisely articulate your vision within 50 words or less. Relationships are now important; you’ll need a business mentor and your partners will be your accountant, attorney, banker and your local library. You must start with a Business Plan, “…don’t begin until you count the cost…sit down and estimate the cost” Luke 14:28, “write the vision; make it plain on tablets…” Habakkuk 2:2 are instructions written 3500 years ago on wise preparation and are timeless business principles. At this stage you should be in frequent dialogue with your business mentor identifying strengths and projecting challenges. It’s now time for a sobering overview of the path ahead of you.

Am I an Entrepreneur?

How Much Money Do I Need?

Entrepreneurship is not for everyone but for some of us it’s our destiny and no employment, experience or education will satisfy the craving. A laser focused vision and contagious passion are the first signs that you have the Entrepreneur DNA. A successful entrepreneur must be relentless, resilient, consistent, confident, proactive, innovative and hardworking. Many people glamourize the idea of entrepreneurship, misleading the public that the lifestyle is posh and free. The time freedom some boast about is at best time flexibility and the luxuries are unlikely to come before 3 years in business. In this season of the social entrepreneur don’t be misled by the countless false success stories that are more predatory than legitimate. Don’t expect to get rich quick or fire your boss immediately. You absolutely must be all in, completely invested and committed to launch a successful new business. You must be able to quickly adapt, adjust and take risk.

Adequate startup capital is crucial, but don’t be intimidated so quick. Being undercapitalized is the leading reason for business failure but to that point new businesses often spend money on unnecessary expenses. A commercial office, designer briefcase, expensive software and premature staffing are examples of unnecessary expenses. These are investments that have no measurable return and some have sufficient no cost alternatives.

Mentorship is available at no cost, www.scorechicago.org is America’s Small Business Counselors and for the life of your business you can be mentored at no cost. Score is primarily funded by The Small Business Administration and is a great place to start your conversation.

Business software is available at no and low cost at www.managehub.com and www.FreeCRM. com. Home offices are ideal but be sure to designate a business only area or room in your home. Expensive clothes, accessories and cars might be counterproductive as you build relationships with prospects giving a negative, flashy impression.

IF YOU HAVE THE PASSION YOU BY SMALL BUSINESS EXPERT

Robin Simmons

There are essential expenses you should not avoid.

I have Power in My Passion!

A professional business plan, branding and marketing including PR, a CPA and attorney are business expenses you should be prepared to pay for. A competent Business Consultant will put a team together for you to work in your best interest. Fees and retainers for business services range depending on the exposure and commitment, in this case your budget and your long term goals might not match, but be sure to hire a consultant with good relationships and long term experience in business. Startup cost vary widely based on industry, location and target market, these components will make a marketing budget alone range from $500 to $50,000. This is why your business plan is essential. Startup money can be in your immediate reach if you are willing to adjust your life style. The income many use as disposal can be redirected to invest in a business and work towards a lifetime of fulfillment and a legacy for your family.

You can do it! Move forward with excellence and integrity in all business endeavors. Success will come with experience, preparation and opportunity, luck is not in this equation. It’s important that in some way your business makes a difference and helps other. Be prepared to work daily and be ready to make adjustments. You must do the work! “It’s not in the dreaming, it’s in the doing” said Mark Cuban. Do not be sensitive by the opinions of others; remember this is your vision not theirs. Prepare yourself for a bit of isolation as you are birthing your vision, your interactions will become more purposeful and valuable.

I recently consulted a client that was $1000 away from starting her business, a business she’d dreamed of for years. I told her “come talk to me when you are honestly ready to start your business” based on her lifestyle style she was spending $1500 a month on miscellaneous experiences that were not enriching her life. You are not ready for business ownership if salon visits, $7 coffees and new releases of everything keep you from your goal. Billionaire Mark Cuban said it best “don’t start a company unless it’s an obsession and something you love…”. SBA loans are ideal when the investment exceeds your resources but they are difficult for startups to qualify. www.accionchicago.org is the best alternative business financing option with relaxed lending qualifications and fair rates, I just had a client approved for $100,000 business loan without collateral.

Consider joining a business network or trade association if you don’t have an organic network of business minded friends and family. You are on your way to the most rewarding professional experience you can image; you are on an exciting path to designing your life and creating priceless experiences. You have the passion, you have the power. I’m looking forward to seeing you in the business news!!

DERRELL CONNOR’S RESPONSE TO HIS INTERVIEW WITH MS. LAWRENCE

Written by Derrell Connor

Ms. Lawrence recently joined me on my weekly radio show to discuss her PR firm and the importance of working with a professional. Lawrence says that social media has changed the game somewhat, as some celebrities and athletes feel that they can promote themselves. “ I run into folks who are trying to build their brand who feel that word of mouth is enough to promote themselves, and that their family and friends can handle the task of getting the word out on their behalf,” she says. But what they don’t realize is that a professional can open doors for them that their friends and family can’t because of the relationships we have built with companies.” Ms. Lawrence has built her PR firm based on those very relationships. She says it’s not enough to just tell potential endorsers what your value is. “You need a professional to validate who you are and what you can bring to the table, because it is our job to understand the companies we represent, what they’re looking for, as well as knowing what your potential and limitations are. Without a professional doing the groundwork for you, it can be very hard to open the doors necessary to build your brand.

I also asked Ms. Lawrence if someone is looking to build their brand, and are looking for a professional to assist them, what are some of the things they need to bring to the table? “ First of all, you need to have a budget,” she says. “Next, you need to sit down and figure out what you want to accomplish with your brand. Who you want to talk to? What market are you trying to reach? After those things are determined, the next step is to communicate your brand in a clear, concise manner so people can understand who you are and what you’re about. Those are just some of the reasons why working with a professional can be so valuable to you and your brand.” I concluded my interview with Ms. Lawrence by discussing other aspects of her career, including being a comedian as well as an accomplished author who’s written three books, one of which covers her life story. Ms Lawrence is an example of someone who came from a difficult childhood, but came out of it by persevering and outworking the competition.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS

ARTICLE BY JAE SPENCE woman. Let us journey together and see just how some of these women got their start in business, what motivates them and who or what is their inspiration. I hope that you will get the empowerment that I received from talking to these inspiring ladies. Let me introduce you to Dartanya Straughn, a very unique young lady, unique stems from her first name alone, Dartanya. She is a 33 year old graphic designer operating in New York City, but her services go wherever they are needed. She decided to name her company after herself: Dartanya & Co which offers a full service of logos’, fliers, book covers, Cd covers, websites, print and editorials, church programs, promotional pieces, custom stationery, product designs, blogs and so much more. They also do photography if needed. “You get full service from beginning to end.” Dartanya’s story is one of growth and processing. She was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, went to high school where she recognized her gift in art. After finishing high school Dartanya was like many young people uncertain of where she was to go from there. She tells me this awesome story of being accepted into a HEOP program at the Pratt institute that she never even applied to. As Beyonce so vividly exclaims, “Who runs the world?!” And the answer is? Girls! I may have come to this same conclusion as I think of the tireless efforts of women. Women who are mothers, daughters, single and married, caregivers, working, learning, pushing and striving for greatness. In this series I am calling Empower WE/Empower Women Entrepreneurs, I will be interviewing women who go against the grain, travel the road least traveled, stepped out on faith and started their own businesses Women who have overcome obstacles, fought and continue to strive for their purpose. This series will explore the journeys of women entrepreneur’s from all walks of life, young women to the more seasoned

She is still uncertain today how it all happened, but she gives God the credit for opening that door. She says that while at Pratt she chose her major of graphic arts and discovered the love she now knows is her passion. Dartanya graduated from Pratt in 2004 and has been doing her thing in this industry ever since. She has serviced clients like that of; Donald Trump, Angela C. Styles which was featured on LA Hair, FintNewyork, and Canon’s ad for Newsday, Le’andria Johnson, and the list goes on. The excitement of seeing her dreams come to life on television was life changing and has certainly encouraged her to keep striving while reminding her that dreams really can come true if you chase after them. Dartanya says she has the same woes as many other entrepreneurs. The worries of if she will be able to do it

and how, yet, she has not allowed these obstacles to stop her and she continues to woo us with her graphic styles. This girl is on fire! The logo’s, photos’ and web designs are certainly top of the line and rather impressive. During my interview with Dartanya I was able to gain some of her personal tips and ideas to getting started.

JS: Who is your inspiration?

Also, what she feels keeps her motivated and inspired. When I asked her what were some obstacles she’s had to push through, Dartanya pretty much said sometimes you have to push through self-doubt and remember what your true purpose is and allow that to become the focus. Staying on track is the key. What helped her is self-evaluations and getting back to basics. Sometimes we all need to take some time to just figure things out.

I learned from her most of all that life is too short.” Sadly, Dartanya lost her grandmother in August of 2014, but smiles as she remembers all the good times and all of the knowledge she imparted. She also mentions another woman who owned Stone Well Studios. She was the one who really allowed her to be creative and helped her hone in on her craft. JS: I know we all need a break, what helps you unwind?

See if this is the right path, reevaluate things and then move forward. Dartanya remembers times of spending 15 hours or more a day at work and has since realized it takes just as much effort to enjoy life as it does to work and now she works on both. QUESTION & ANSWER

DS: “I would have to say my grandmother. She was a school teacher and was loaded with wisdom. We have had so many talks about everything from marriage, business, just everything.”

DS: “Food is how I unwind.” She loves wine festivals, movies, traveling, bike riding and zip lining and just lives her life to the fullest. She says she “trusts God and that is how she gets through.” She truly just enjoys life. Dartanya is single and living out her dreams. She considers herself a “foodie”, she loves to cook and eat. She enjoys visiting museums and just living life.

JS: What are some suggestions to women or men who may be interested in starting a business?

She’s a family girl and enjoys her time with them. She is spunky and determined and certainly has what it takes to make it.

Dartanya Straughn: “Write the vision and make it plain” “Write it all out.” If you have the desire to start a business or have been wrestling with thoughts of change, then just begin to write those ideas out. Having things on paper can shape into a full business plan.

Some of her future goals in business are to start a design company partnership and to finish up on a trendy, inspirational t-shirt line. If you need a graphic designer, you will gain one of the best in Dartanya.

JS: Do you think it’s harder for women in business then it is for men? DS: “I do think there is a big difference.” I have presented designs and was told wow, I thought that a man designed that.” Showing that are some biases in business when it comes to a woman’s work.

My take away is this, no matter how young or old you are, you can begin today. It takes courage and you will need to have some self-talks, but it can be done. If you have been wrestling with an idea or wondering what your purpose is, I encourage you to find it. Write it down and then seek after it. It will not be an easy walk, but it will certainly be one you will always be proud of.

YOU CAN DO IT!

“HIRE YOUR HOUSE” BY MARIO HENRY Advertisement

I remember the day… I had reached the highest level I could imagine professionally at the time, playing for the New England Patriots in the National Football League (NFL). After a routine business meeting, my agent took me aside and told me “it’s not how much money you make, it’s how much you keep”. I smiled and agreed, not exactly sure what had prompted his statement; it didn’t really make sense to me at the time.

those who didn’t realize they needed help. Many people believe that if there is a big problem, then their accountant, lawyer, or financial planner would bring it to their attention. The truth is that many of these occupations study what is current and many do not want to re-create the wheel even though sometimes you must see if what everyone else is doing makes sense and is air tight. When I recognized some holes in the status quo, I came out with common sense possible solutions. This is how I became involved in the financial services world. Now, after 13 years in the financial services industry, this is what I have found to be true.

Years later, when I was no longer able to play professional football, I ran out of money. Where had it all gone?? I had been unable to “keep” any of it! I had become another statistic, a “broke former athlete” and THAT is when my former agent’s advice suddenly hit home. But I refused to let it end this way.

Most of the general population is in danger of the same exact fate that I faced, running out of money when they need it most. In fact, if you’re being honest with yourself, you probably know that to be true about you and your current situation.

I was determined to tackle the problem, so to speak, to understand how and why this happened. After a period of time of being broke, I became intrigued with the fact that so many former teammates shared the same plight and it could be a snapshot of the average American. I realized that there would be an opportunity to help many Americans in the world of financial services, so I studied many aspects of consumer credit, insurance, real estate, and tried to create out of the box systems to help people ― even

Don’t think it applies to you? You have a pension you say? Watch the news. New Jersey demonstrated recently that things are changing. While pensions used to put the responsibility of retirement on the company, they are vanishing rapidly. Even state and federal workers are now discovering that their pensions are not guaranteed. Why? This is because pensions are very expensive to manage and now companies and municipalities want to switch all the responsibility back to you. The most popular of these pension alter-

natives, more commonly known as 401k’s, allow you to invest your pre-tax income and not be responsible for any taxes until you start taking income. The problem is that the 401k was never meant to replace income or become the primary retirement vehicle. It was only meant to supplement it, yet everyone has built is up as the best retirement or long term income strategy, and it simply is not. This recent article by CNBC describes the trouble ahead in greater detail http://www.cnbc.com/id/102496157. Another major problem with the 401k is the stock market risk associated with many of these funds. There are ups and downs in the market, so how do you protect yourself from losses when they come? In most cases, when you are finally able to withdraw your money, you will also be expected to pay taxes on not only the money you invested tax-deferred, but also on any the interest that your money earned you during that time! You could easily end up paying Uncle Sam 2-4 times more in taxes than you saved during your earning years. Simply put, people are not saving enough money and do not understand how to do so in a tax-advantaged way. So, they just bury their head in the sand, and bury their money in a 401k. Here’s the real world result of that. Most people will have to work longer than they could have ever expected. I had a client, age 81, who had to go back to work, arthritic knees and all, to greet people at the door at Wal-Mart. Why? Because Social Security wasn’t paying her enough money to cover her basic living expenses and her pension payments were almost nothing, eaten away due to inflation. “Inflation is when you pay fifteen dollars for the ten-dollar haircut you used to get for five dollars when you had hair.”― Sam Ewing Inflation is the deprecation of money ― the more the government has to print, the less it’s worth, troubling news. Since I’ve known about this 401k problem for years, I’ve been working hard on developing a better solution that would solve the major issues described above and actually put me in a better financial position. A few years ago I finally discovered it by using of all things ― a traditional home mortgage. After testing my homemade solution out successfully, I believe I’m ready to go prime time and share it with the world. This method that I’ve invented that could potentially

solve this huge problem of outliving your money is a process I call Hiring your House and I wrote a book about it, called (what else?) “How to Hire Your House”. This book contains solutions to the riddle of “how do I keep up with inflation” and gives solid advice on how you can plan for a potential tax free retirement. It also goes into great detail on how this “Hire Your House” program could potentially help you get back every single mortgage payment that you’ve paid on your house BACK WITH INTEREST. Imagine that! I wrote “How to Hire Your House” to essentially function as a road map. It answers all the questions regarding whether or not this technique may be the perfect retirement solution that you were looking for ― a solution that will not depend directly in participating in the stock market. This program was developed to show you how to become the manager of your own home equity rather than keeping it trapped in your home. It also explains that you can access what is already yours instead of relying on the bank to give permission.

THE POWER OF “O” by Linda L. Eubanks

The Power of “O” by Linda L. Eubanks As a woman I’ve found out that the power of being organized has had its benefits. I can remember the time where being organized was not my best friend. I stood in my closet looking bewildered at a heap of clothes on the floor. Shoes tossed everywhere like a ragdoll mumbling “Where did I put that clutch?” You’ve been there too. Right? You’re invited to a soiree but the one item that completes your outfit is nowhere in sight. As I hopped out the door while putting on my stilettos, I keep saying “Why can’t I seem to keep this closet organized”. This wasn’t the first time that this had happened but surely it was going to be the last. After a little research and some trial and error with some techniques, you’re going to get the foundational part of the crème de la crème of what I now call The Power of “O”: The Closet Edition. Clean Out Your closet Yes, clean it out. Closets are like treasure boxes. There’s a lot of HOT pieces in there that are waiting to make an appearance in the world. Have a Closet Party Select some pieces that you no longer want, invite your friends over, pour some drinks and let your friend go through your closet to pick out some pieces. You know you have that one friend that stalks your clothes and loves your style. Invest In A Storage System Storage systems are the best! Especially if they are custom made. Custom made storage systems are built to suit YOUR lifestyle. It’s a great way to have a clear view of the pieces in your closet and ensure that everything is in its place to grab and go. Linda A. Koopersmith of Beverly Hills Organizer says Creates about 40% more space! Who doesn’t need that! A great way to add some closet real estate! For me organizing is more than systems and elegance décor. Organizing has become a lifestyle for success that will always remain in progress. Niecy Nash, host of Clean House and Beverly Hills Organizer, Linda A Koopersmith can attest to the misconception if anyone thinks that hiring a professional organizer will solve any issue by cleaning out all of the things that may your glamorous.

In every area of human existence there seems to be a construct of glass barriers that have been designed to keep at bay certain kinds of people not associated with its builders while simultaneously alienating prepared applicants with subtle suggestions of personal inadequacies and questions of self-worth. Being a woman of colour all my life, I find these diaphanous barricades of great importance while searching doors of opportunity and finding entrance into certain groups life-changing. For instance a view into the corporate world, we are out-numbered, ill-represented and hold a handful of placements in upper class management. Let’s focus on our education system for a moment, look at the teachers who are in charge of training our children without relevant racial awareness and armed with penal system behavioral curricula that separates and incarcerates their dreams, hopes, current actuality and their future. Glass ceilings are everywhere. Where’s my hammer? My knowledge, experience, life’s victories that push against untold cycles of desperation and fear of unknown possibility. As I ponder all the invisible obstacles that prevail in our current society post-civil rights my mind shifts to the church. Ministry and women, Women in Ministry no matter how you rearrange the phrase it stirs something deep inside and brings me to address the glass ceilings in the church. Titles and positions come readily available for any who believe that God called them to preach, teach, to pray, minister and to serve. Is there real room for women in God’s kingdom and mans’ church? A few have made it into the place of “successful ministry” and at what costs. I am certain the cost was high and the ascent astronomical. Real women doing God’s will shake the foundation of traditional churching. Women’s ministry has become a hard sell to the congregation that staggers at about 75% full of women in attendance. Living life in the pews is unforgiving, difficult, perplexing and creates personas of what God’s women should look like, be like, and act like this behavior leaves women wanting.

SHATTERI GLASS CEI Desperate for the filling of Spiritual satisfaction and approval and as we have heard desperate women do desperate things. Some have found their sweet spot while others journey thru the aisle puzzled lacking love and forgiveness that the church says is so freely given. Women of God where do you stand? Church women what do you want from women’s ministry? Women what are you looking for in the church? From Other-women?

ING THE ILING From God? From Man? From Ourselves? From the ministries we support and commit to? I believe we have the power to shatter the glass ceilings blanketed over our worlds, it’s going to take commitment and alliances, sisterhood and most of all acceptance and self-birthed authenticity. Shattering our first ceiling – our own image provides strength to tackle the others.

Breakthroughs are intricate and earth-moving. Liberation is transformational. Revolutions are evolutional and at its time for real women doing real healing and truth-telling, living real lives in the pews, prayers and meetings held in the church of 2015 to shatter the ole-way that women’s ministry is executed. On to more effective, relative, authentic women’s gatherings that break barriers encourage support and alter lives. Dianne C Lemon Life Architect W: www.refined-culture.com W.R.E.S.T. Maria Howell HOLLYWOOD A-LIST ACTRESS TALKS LIVE WITH CEDRIC NETTLES

1. When did you realize that you wanted to go into acting? I realized it at the age of 6. 2. What was the one thing you feared that would possibly hinder your career? After doing it this long, it’s hard to remember IF I feared anything would hinder my career. But...I will say, simple human fears were normal, such as...wondering if I’m good enough to compete, did I have what it takes to support myself. 3. What kept you facing that fear “head on” without giving up? I kept facing the fears, because I’m the type of person who doesn’t like to live with questions marks. I strongly feel that God gave me a purpose to make people feel better. In my spirit, I wanted to be a missionary, a nurse, a doctor, a counselor...you get the picture. LOL! 4. What is the one thing about you, people in general really do not know was a hidden talent? Hmmm, a hidden talent of mine. I do quite a bit of voice over work, like commercials and narrations for books. Also, if you want to call it a talent, I’m pretty handy around the house, with fixing things. LOL. 5. How did your role on The Color Purple affect your career professionally and personally? The Color Purple affected me in more ways than I’m even aware of. Simply put...that iconic movie kept my face familiar and relevant on people’s minds. I had no idea that the church scene was the turning point of the movie while we were filming. This is the 30th anniversary.

6. What are you working on now? I’m working on several things at this particular time. One, a cabaret show at The Colony Theatre in Burbank, CA (April 2015) and I have a movie called, “Sons 2 The Grave”, coming in 2015. Starring Trevor Jackson (I play his mom). This film was directed by Mykelti Williamson (Bubba in Forrest Gump). 7. What is your message to young talent trying to get into the industry? My advice is to PLEASE study the craft and the business. Do NOT get into this industry if you only want the fame and glamour. In the words of Denzel Washington, this industry should be called “Business Show”. Dream on, because any and all things are possible, I’m a firm believer in that, but you STILL need a strong work ethic. A mentor is also a great thing to have. Get a “working” actor to teach or coach. 8. What is your cause and how can others get involved? Thank you for asking. I’m very passionate about a charity called “Students Without Mothers”. I serve on the Board of Directors. It’s a non-profit that raises college scholarships for high school seniors, who don’t have their mothers, either through death, incarceration or some other unfortunate circumstance. People can donate as little or as much as they like. Any amount helps. www.studentswithoutmothers.org Speaklivenation.com My novel ‘Torrential Waters’ http://www.amazon.com/Torrential-Waters-Cedric-Nettles/dp/1478321490/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395670128&sr=8-1&keywords=Torrential+waters
