Elegant Orchids & Garden Center Possibilities n n n
PEOPLE HAVE LONG HELD IN ESTEEM that which is beautiful, exotic, or rare. Whether a fine silk, an intricate hand-woven rug, a tantalizing perfume, or an exquisitely blended culinary dish, human beings find pleasure in exploring all that is different, new and lovely. This fascination with beauty carries over into the selection and tending of plants, both inside the home and outdoors in the garden. One plant that inspires both interest and respect is the orchid. Orchids captivate the imagination, conjuring up images of more tropical environments, an oftenwelcome dream of escape during Wisconsin’s longer winter months. But their beauty in a home may be enjoyed year-round, bringing a burst of color to freshen and enliven sunlit window ledges.
Tending orchids in a home environment necessitates an understanding of the needs of the individual plant. For best success, as with any plant grown indoors or out, it’s best to match the needs of the orchid with the conditions of your growing environment. Attempting to grow an orchid in a space without adequate sunlight, for example, may result in a plant that either does not flower or that has pale, small, or flimsy flowers. Frustration can be averted, at least in part, by taking steps to assess your home’s overall light and temperature before assigning a new orchid to a growing space. Other key variables in orchid care, including monitoring water, humidity, and ventilation needs, are easier to manipulate to match the plant’s requirements. Orchids in the wild flourish around the globe, growing either on the ground or as epiphytes, or air

plants. Epiphyte varieties often may be found in the upper levels, or canopy, of early-stage rain forests. In this natural environment, the orchids enjoy plenty of sunlight, a fair amount of moisture, and gentle breezes. As epiphyte varieties tend to do better as houseplants than their terrestrial counterparts, it’s helpful to consider the growing conditions of these varieties when placing them in an indoor living condition. Orchids tend to prefer adequate hours of bright light each day to allow blooms to form. According to Emily Gehrke, owner of Thiensville’s Frenz Garden Center along with her husband Jim, Phalaenopsis is the orchid most often grown in the home. Gehrke noted that this type of orchid “has similar growing conditions (to) an African violet.” Other varieties are sometimes deemed more difficult to grow because of the more specific growing conditions they require. Gehrke also noted that because different types of orchids have variations in their care requirements (such as light and water needs, fertilization preferences, and how to repot), it is best to first become familiar with the needs of your choice orchid. “Orchids can last up to centuries,” Gehrke explained. “Given the proper conditions they can live a very long
time,” she said. She encouraged patrons not to be discouraged if an orchid or other houseplant dies. “All plants are living things and all living things do die…It’s nature,” Gehrke said. AREA GREENHOUSES Flower preferences needn’t be exotic to be rewarding to grow, beautiful, and uplifting to view in the indoor and outdoor spaces of a home. Frenz Garden Center, located at 505 North Main Street in Thiensville, Wisconsin, offers customers a lovely selection of indoor and outdoor plants to brighten any season. Emily Gehrke described several flowering houseplant options that are both “long blooming and easy care.” She mentioned Cyclamen, Calandiva (“which has a rosette flower that resembles a rose”), and Kalanchoe as favorites of her customers. “They all have showy blooms (in) colors of purples, pinks, reds (and) white for Cyclamen (and) reds, pinks, yellows, (and) whites for Kalanchoes and Calandivas,” Gehrke said. When selecting a flowering houseplant, Gehrke noted that it’s important to choose one that has buds as well as open flowers. “When purchased, plants can have open blooms, but also look for more buds on the plant for a longer flowering time,” she said. “Once the flower is spent, it is best to purchase a new one, (as) they
are not easy to get to re-bloom…,” she said. African violets, however, are also a customer favorite, and they are easier to encourage to rebloom, with proper watering and fertilization. One of the newest, most exciting inventions Emily at Frenz Garden Center says she carries is the AQUAPOTS! They are beautifully colored, Ceramic planters which are Self Watering, SelfContained and make for very easy, Carefree Container Gardening. They actually can save money down the road from not having to replace dead plants half way through the growing season. You can go on an extended vacation, and know your container garden will still be alive when you return! As in the growing of orchids indoors, it’s important to provide flowering houseplants with enough light. “If a sunny window is not an option, table-top or floor-standing grow lights are available, with many style options,” Gehrke said. For those who wish to keep indoor plants compact, Gehrke noted that other indoor favorites include miniature plants, seasonal flowers, and green plants. Miniature plants “fit nicely on desks, tables, (and) in small spaces to brighten an area,” Gehrke explained. Her customers also enjoy succulents and air plants in their indoor home spaces.

Moving into Wisconsin’s outdoor growing season, homeowners may turn thoughts to the cultivation of beautiful gardens and planters on decks or patios. Annuals and perennials brighten yards and porches, with different colors, leaf shapes, and growing preferences allowing for a wide variety of combinations in most outdoor spaces. Ebert’s Greenhouse Village, located at W1795 Fox Road in Ixonia, Wisconsin, is noted for their flourishing selection of flowers and plants, and has been voted “Best Green Thumb Paradise” by Milwaukee Magazine. Ebert’s officially opens for the new season on April 17 this year. Anne Adams, Marketing/Customer Service Specialist at Ebert’s, described the special qualities that Ebert’s Greenhouse Village offers customers. “The unique and rustic shopping environment nestled in the Ixonia countryside make it a ‘destination’ garden center. Our friendly and very knowledgeable staff share our guests’ passion for gardening. We have the most extensive selection of annuals, hanging baskets, combo containers, herbs and vegetables, perennials and nursery stock in Southeastern Wisconsin,” Adams explained. Adams shared some of her customers’ favorite flowering plants. Top-sellers include
geraniums, with their wide variety of colors and propensity for working nicely in hanging baskets; Gerbera daisies (Adams noted that they have “beautiful and cheery blooms that make you happy”); and Petunias, as they are both easy to grow and also well-suited to hanging plantings and containers of combined flowers. Among perennials, Ebert’s customers tend to return to Hostas as a favorite. “Hostas are a garden staple that never goes out of style,” Adams explained. “These foliage plants ‘anchor’ garden beds and offer a wide variety of color and leaf presentations all through the growing season.” Other favorites in Wisconsin gardens include daylilies, coneflowers, and lavender. “Lavender is very fragrant, and the varied sizes and colors of the blooms on coneflowers and daylilies offer a multitude of design choices,” Adams explained. Non-flowering plants are also popular among Ebert’s Greenhouse Village customers. “Our guests enjoy the varied textures, leaf shapes and sizes, and wide array of color choices that the foliage plant ‘Coleus’ offers. They continue to grow in popularity, and thus we have expanded our selection for 2020,” Adams said. As thoughts turn to outdoor gardens, customers consider beautifying all aspects
of their outdoor home and business growing spaces. Lammscapes! and Lamm Gardens (the retail and garden center sector) are located at 2708 Sherman Road in Jackson, Wisconsin. Lammscapes! provides homeowners and businesses with landscape design, landscape construction and installation, and year-round management of landscapes, including snow clearing. They are happy to help with spring cleanup and preparation for planting, and also help create hardscapes, working with patios, decks, pergolas, and fire pits. The team at Lammscapes! works with both new construction and renovation, and also works to design seasonal planters and displays, making them a vital link to garden enjoyment throughout the year. They also provide seasonal, holiday, and wedding decorations, in addition to hosting weddings and children’s parties. A fun and well-planned series of workshops, many planting-based and held outdoors onsite at Lamm Gardens includes a variety of topics such as a nature- or garden-themed “Art in the Garden” series, “Planter Workshops,” and events themed to celebrate Mother’s and Father’s Day, for example. of Lamm Gardens and Lammscapes!, noted that cold-hardy plants like pansies and Violas are popular spring sellers. Her customers are looking for color but need a flower that will tolerate cold nights, something that is not possible with most annuals and tropical plants. “Pansies are the first flower people can buy,” Lamm McGraw said. She noted that even if a late snow arrives, the pansies will be okay. Planting bulbs in planters is another popular option as spring begins. Gehrke said that geraniums remain a “number one favorite” as a “top selling annual,” along with “Salvia, Penta, Portulaca, SunPatiens, Begonias, Lantana, Dahlias, (and) Petunias.” Lamm McGraw said that annuals are usually introduced around Memorial Day, and that classic favorites like geraniums include new varieties with variegated foliage. Wave Petunias are also a favorite; they require less dead-heading of spent blooms, are easy to care for, and spread. Planters of annuals are often crafted with a three-part selection of plants: “thrillers, fillers, and spillers,” according to Lamm McGraw. She explained that “thrillers” are tall plants with visual impact; “fillers” are round or full plants that help to fill in the planter; and “spillers” are trailing plants that are low and spreading, often cascading over the edge of the planter. Specialty tropical plants are also well-liked, according to Lamm McGraw. Cannas plants are popular, with red, orange or yellow blooms; she described them as a “striking impact flower.” Adding to their appeal, some tropical plants can be brought indoors over the winter, or saved as a bulb or tuber to be replanted in spring. Among perennials, Gehrke said a recent favorite has been Asclepias, or milkweed plant, an important plant for Monarch butterflies. “Other perennial favorites,” Gehrke noted, include “coral bells, coneflowers, perennial hibiscus, perennial geraniums, Sedum, Hostas, perennial grasses, and Monarda.” Customers often request plants that are deer-resistant, and Gehrke has also had “many requests for perennials that attract pollinators, butterflies and hummingbirds.” Perennials are often sold as smaller plants, but will grow to a more mature size over the course of around three years. Lamm McGraw said that perennials “sleep,” or remain small during their first year; they “creep,” growing larger during their second year; and finally, the plants “leap” during their third year, a process she likened to the growth of children. Whether for indoor or outdoor gardens, Gehrke has discovered shifting preferences for Continued on page 27

IT TAKES A GREAT AMOUNT of care and artistry to add details wherever possible while not overwhelming a space. It takes a further artistry to add these details while maintaining simplicity. That artistry is on full display in this gorgeous home on approximately 600 feet of Oconomowoc Lake’s south shore. Designed by Patera Architects and built by Barenz Builders with woodwork by Burmeister, the construction plans for this home are loaded with details, leaving no doubts as to how this home was to be built. The finished product is testimony to the attention and care paid. Entering the home through the custom double front doors with a tasteful circular leaded glass detail, you are greeted by outstanding views of the lake as well as
the first taste of the subtle details found throughout the home. The Murano glass chandelier hangs from a high, barreled ceiling which accented tastefully by a lovely raised panel detail. Two double sets of cherry columns define the entryway from the great room and each set guides you to other sections of the first floor. The flooring is large-tiled travertine, which you will find throughout much of the first floor. The home’s elevator with access to the lower level, clad in walnut, is located just off the foyer. The great room forms the heart of this home. The cathedral ceiling soars, suspended by two timber-frame beams and graced with a Fine Arts Chandelier. Obligatory to a lake home, the north facing wall is replete with transomed windows

to take in the spectacular views over the lake. An arched window set high in the north gable of the room brings in light to accent the subtle faux finish of the walls. To avoid the sometimes “cold” feeling of a tall room of this kind, the designers added a stately crown molding at about 10 feet to bring a cozy intimacy to the room. The floors are a handsome wide-planked walnut which brings warmth to the space and are complimented by bookmatched, burled walnut and marble fireplace with a TV hidden behind a portrait. The kitchen is just off the great room. The south walls of this room come to a point with large windows dominating. The center of the ceiling features a five-pointed inset coffer detailed with medallions, accent lights and inserts faux painted to resemble sueded leather. The kitchen island offers seating and is supplemented by another island shaped to match the angles of the space. All cabinetry in the kitchen is cherry, the floor is large-tiled travertine and the granite tops are edged with a luxurious “ogee bullnose” detail which resembles a double slab of granite. The Wolf/SubZero appliance suite is anchored by
a large, 8-burner range, while a cabinet-faced refrigerator and refrigerator drawers add to the functionality of the room. Other details include an over-range pot filler and beautiful stone exhaust hood. The kitchen also offers access to the main floor lanai, which wraps around the half-octagonal lines of the lake side of the home. This is a great space covered with tongue-and-groove ceiling and with honed marble tiles for flooring. Understandably, it is a favorite place of the current owners. Just off the kitchen, through a welcoming sitting area with wet/coffee bar, beverage refrigerator and wine captain, is the sunroom with large windows to the east and a wall of windows overlooking the lake. This latter set of windows can be folded open completely to create a room completely open to the lake. Between this room and the sitting area is a hidden set of glass panels which can be pulled out to close out the room from the rest of the house. An octagonal cathedral with tongue-and-groove details, accent lighting, speakers (part of a state-of-the-art electronics system which goes throughout the home) and chandelier accents the stone brick fireplace and pizza oven. The travertine of the kitchen carries all the way through to this room, where it is also heated.
Heading back towards the foyer, you pass the powder room which, with its travertine floors and onyx vanity top with matching chair rail as well as its subtle wall treatment, can only be described as “sumptuous”. Also passed on this walk to the foyer are the mudroom with cherry lockers and walk-in closet as well as the large and functional laundry room. A back staircase takes you to the second floor of the home which is a welcoming bedroom suite with the same wide walnut flooring of the great room, a kitchenette (sink, microwave and refrigerator) with granite tops, private bath with heated floor and large double shower and spacious walk-in closet. A perfect location for visiting guests! The executive-level home office, with furniture-quality paneled walls, coffered ceiling and built-in bookshelves and desk is just next to the foyer. The ample, yet tasteful, use of wood in this room calls back to earlier times. Past the home office rests the home’s main floor master suite. This large space with its wide-planked walnut floor features a semioctagonal bay window with expansive views of Oconomowoc lake. It is also one of the more detailed rooms of the home. The high tray ceiling follows the lines of the room (squared off

There is access from this room to the upper lanai. A small bar with beverage refrigerator and microwave helps add to the “weekend luxury escape” of the space. Past the double walk-in closets, is the master bath, which can only be described as decadent. Polished travertine floors with mosaic accents are throughout the space. The undercabinet lighting of the vanity is attached to a sensor which will gently light the area when entered during the night. the details of the home’s main level, including a luxurious Venetian plaster treatment on the walls and ceilings of the space. The large family room is clad in travertine tile and has a handsome coffered ceiling over a rough-hewn stone fireplace. Dominating the space, as one would expect, is a wall of ceiling-height windows looking over the large lower patio and out to Oconomowoc Lake. Adjacent to this space is a full kitchenette/bar area. With seating for four, range, full refrigerator, sink and microwave it offers a great place to entertain while guests take in the views. Opposite the bar and also adjacent to the family room is a spacious gaming area, a great place for billiards or whatever may strike you. Not to be missed is a large, climate controlled, stonelined wine cellar. A treat for any oenologist! A full exercise room finishes off the “public” areas of this spacious, well-appointed lower level. Finally, the lower has two full bedroom suites with warm hardwood floors, spectacular views as well as full tile and granite baths and walk-in closets. Outside, the details don’t end. The exterior of the home is neutral brick and stone with a three-car garage upstairs as well as another just off the lower level. The upper lanai is covered with tongue-and-groove woodwork, has honed marble tiles and cast-iron railings.
But the lower patio is an outdoor entertainer’s dream! With two semi-octagonal outcroppings which echo many of the room details inside, it features the same honed marble tile from the lanai as well as a full stone fireplace with adjoining stone pizza oven, built-in gas grill, firepit and large Jacuzzi tub. A paved walk takes you down to the pier and also the paved picnic area. Finally, the property itself is no less spectacular than the home! At a total of over 5 acres set proudly on a point, it features a long, winding and rolling private drive to the home from Pabst Rd as well as partial ownership in an island (approximately one-half acre) which was carved out over 100 years ago as was the fashion in Lake Country. The property is mostly natural with the immediate area around the home kept manicured. From the lake, this gives this newer, 6 year old home the impression of having been there for many, many years and does not detract from the natural beauty of the lake. On a lake with many spectacular historical and newer properties, this one stands out for its detailed simplicity as well as having one of the most premium locations on Oconomowoc Lake. ESSENTIAL STEPS
to Prepare for a successful
HOME REMODEL A homeowner’s motivation for taking on a remodeling project can vary greatly, but there’s one universal rule of thumb: home upgrades should add value, function or both. This step-by-step guide can help ensure you get the maximum return on your investment and make the most of your remodel.

Identify Reasons for Remodeling Deciding whether to undertake simple aesthetic changes or a full remodel can be difficult. One of the best ways to decide is to figure out why you are remodeling in the first place, whether it’s to make your new house feel more like home or to update an outdated kitchen. Consider Timing Many variables can impact the timing of your
project, including the climate and exact nature of the job. For example, foundation work is easier when the ground is cold during winter. Spring tends to be busy for the construction industry, so you might pay premium rates for labor and materials, but it’s also the perfect time to get a project done that you can enjoy throughout the summer. Summer months are ideal for indoor projects out of the heat. Also consider factors such as personal or professional obligations, or even an
E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S
event for which you need the project completed. Set Your Budget Every home is unique in structure, age, quality and craftsmanship, which all impact the price of a remodel. Since no one can see through walls before demolition, the quote you receive may not be 100% accurate. However, a qualified remodeling company will be forthcoming about potential challenges. Account for these

adjustments by planning for a 10% cushion, just in case. Hire the Right Team To help ensure you find the right company for the job, do your research. Referrals from friends and family are one way to find a remodeler. Resources like the National Association of the Remodeling Industry provide unbiased information that can help you find qualified,
certified remodelers in your area. With more than 5,000 member companies, the organization represents professional remodelers who adhere to a strict code of ethics. Many hold certifications in remodeling, kitchen and bath design and lead carpentry. Establish a Written Agreement Most companies insist on a contract to protect their own interests, but if they don’t,

you should. In addition to defining the scope of work and budget, a contract ensures all parties are on the same page with expectations about factors like timing, liability in the event of an accident and other practical matters. Contractors also often provide guarantees of workmanship, so find out what they cover for how long and include this information in your work agreement. Understand the Plan Keep the lines of communication open between you, the remodeling contractor and the work crew. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Let them know your family’s schedule and circumstances that may affect their work, such as pets. Make sure to specify the best way to reach you and how often you wish to communicate about your project. Complete the Project When the remodel is almost finished, walk through the area and note any adjustments that need made while the contractor is still on site. You should also take another look at the contract and confirm you have signed permits, receipts, change orders, lien waivers, warranties and manufacturers’ guides at your disposal. ACTS OF KINDNESS
IN TIMES OF CHALLENGE, people may turn to nature and to each other to bolster spirits and renew courage. Nature offers peace and a sense of constancy during periods of human turbulence. With restored hope, individuals are able to extend the comfort of a helping hand to fellow humans, creating an ever-expanding network of support, love and kindness that radiates through communities here and abroad. Here in Wisconsin, Lake Michigan provides solace to many, offering an ever-changing palette of hues and an array of beaches and lakeside dining options. This spring, the lake has been particularly
lovely, with aqua and jade water blending to shades of purple at the horizon. At Atwater Beach in Shorewood, dry grasses from last season wave at the top of the bluff, their golden colors accented against the restful blue shades of the lake beyond. In summer, the bluff will come alive with a variety of plants and wildflowers, and the songs of redwing blackbirds will rise into the sky. Already, the birds are busy, with an increasing number of warbles and trills spinning towards the heavens at dawn and dusk especially. People are drawn to the lake, where they gaze out at the early morning sunlight
glistening on the waves below, or where they find the benefits of solitude in quiet meditation, reading, or stretching before a workout. Children point at the vista beyond, or romp through the newly green grass, alive and spinning their youthful energy out in boundless waves. The lake itself reaches toward the shore, toward the communities of southeastern Wisconsin, extending a note of hope and help throughout the seasons. Lake Michigan possesses moods for every day, and wears them in an almost human fashion, sometimes shifting from morning to noon to dusk.

Mostly, though, the lake rests peacefully, accepting its place on the earth, willing to reach out to anyone in need of a burst of color, a fresh breeze, or a moment of peaceful reflection. Its waves embrace the shore, soothing the earth with an ever-present rhythm of lapping surf. People are touched by the presence of this Great Lake, this wondrous body of water, and are fueled and centered, made more ready to touch the lives of their neighbors and fellow beings after being in the presence of nature. Inspired by the magic of spring and a world reawakening, they move out into the community prepared to extend a kind word, a helping hand to those in their paths. One recent morning, a white-haired man moved along the edge of one of the suburban parks not far from the lake. He wore casual clothes and carried a large garbage bag. With a long pronged device, he poked at trash that had found its way to the park’s edge, deftly capturing the wayward trail of human presence and placing paper scraps and more into his bag for disposal. He moved slowly, carefully, but always aware of where he was, of the role he had chosen to take on. Hardly another person was out in the park at that time, but the man didn’t seem to mind; he

had a self-selected project, it seemed, and was fully intent on its successful completion. The surrounding community was tucked away, quiet and cozy in homes and apartments, but this one bright spirit had decided to touch the life of those around him through an act of consideration and beautification, leaving his path cleaner than he had found it.
Hands radiate energy of sharing, even when they are not in immediate physical contact. Hands raise in warm greeting to passing neighbors, and strangers are made familiar with congenial waves. Human connections are infinite, even when unseen, like the pathways of tree roots that interlace beneath a forest floor. Resting voices are not necessarily silent; they are preparing to touch the lives of others through other rivulets of energy. Colorful sidewalk chalk, window images, flags displayed with pride—all are ways of greeting a neighbor, offering reassurance, stating, I am still here, for you, for me, for us all. Hands radiate energy of sharing, even when they are not in immediate physical contact. Hands raise in warm greeting to passing neighbors, and strangers are made familiar with congenial waves. Families craft and share favorite meals and sweet treats, play boards games or catch, explore crafts or make music together. Just as lake waters reach toward beaches and shorelines, human hands connect lives in profound ways. The power of touch can be deeply calming, as when a hand is extended to offer reassurance or to create a warm connection during times of uncertainty. Parents may extend a loving hand to enclose the smaller hand of a young son or daughter at bedtime, or when providing reassurance before a doctor visit or the first day of school. Caregivers support their patients through the work of determined, nurturing spirits made manifest in part through the skilled work of their hands. Through the work of diverse human hands, works of art and music are deftly crafted, bringing delight to hearts and minds around the world. Even through times of physical distance, the closeness of human connection continues to pulse through communities around the world. Just as people draw strength from the constancy of the natural world and its creatures, plants, bodies of water and landforms, sustenance is also gained from the power of human connections. The foundation built through caring gestures and acts of kindness throughout time remain today, heralding new seasons of hope for individuals, families, and communities everywhere. n E X C L U S I V E LY Y O U R S

flower types and colors through the seasons. Most of her requests are for flowers of “bright and cheery colors,” with spring color preferences tending toward pinks, yellows, pastels, and purples. In summer, she sees an increase in preferences for red, white and blue, in honor of Fourth of July celebrations. As the fall season approaches, customers seek out yellows, maroons and browns, and in winter, floral choices are weighted toward reds and white. In addition to choosing plants whose flowers support the mood of a given season, customers also tend to look for favorite types of plants in association with favorite holidays or seasons. In her work at Frenz Garden Center, Emily Gehrke has noted that Irish moss and shamrock plants sell well around St. Patrick’s Day, while tulips, lilies, primrose, Hydrangeas, daffodils, pansies, and Begonias are popular during the spring, Easter, and Mother’s Day times. Customers turn to garden mums in autumn, as well as to cold-tolerant annuals, ornamental peppers, and flowering kale or cabbage. Wintertime and the holiday season inspire a return to Christmas cactus, poinsettia, Amaryllis and paperwhites. Adams noted a similar arc of choices among customers at Ebert’s Greenhouse Village. “Poinsettias are the traditional choice during the holidays. Mums, asters, pansies, ornamental kale, and Rudbeckia provide a colorful fall display. Pansies also serve for beautiful spring color and are very frost resistant,” she said. Sometimes, a plant’s popularity endures throughout the shifting Wisconsin seasons. Adams noted that hydrangeas are one such choice. “The selection of hydrangeas on the market today is expanding, and they provide yearround color throughout the seasons, including (providing) winter interest,” she explained. Whatever your floral preference, area greenhouses and garden centers are prepared to provide a seasonal array of plants for both interior and exterior home garden spaces. Visit one of your favorite local centers or explore a new center to expand your garden this growing season, or to enhance your collection of beautiful indoor plants. Each local garden center provides a unique atmosphere, plant selection, and knowledgeable staff determined to make your planting time an enjoyable one. Gardening provides an accessible and enjoyable outlet for creative energies, as well as a link to the healing world of nature. As Lamm McGraw summarized, “We just want to encourage people to keep thinking about spring.” n APRIL 2020

GOD’S CORNER n n n
30
by Ger trude M. Puelicher
I WONDER WHETHER GOD realized when he created “every winged fowl after his kind” and saw that it was good, what a joy birds would bring to people. Take poets, for example. They have great rapport with birds. Wordsworth devoted one poem to “The Redbreast.” In his “To a Skylark” he says, “—with a soul as strong as a mountain river pouring out praise to the Almighty Giver.” Keats wrote an “Ode to a Nightingale,” and Shelley’s “Ode to a Skylark” is a paean of praise for the joy and gladness that spill from the fullness of its heart. On a low slung pine branch sat the season’s first robin, obviously delighted at whatever turn of events had taken him back to the Nicolet forest. He burst into song like a miniature Pavarotti cradling the plaintive notes of Panis Angelicus into the rising crescendo of a Wagnerian aria. His tiny chest swelled with the volume of sound he was sending forth. His head was thrust back in pleased delight at what he could contribute to the world’s happiness. Interpret it any way you choose, but that robin knew he was glorifying God. Couldn’t we improve today’s untoward conditions if we made an effort to express joy rather than the negativism that is prevalent not only in the news but in the attitude of many people? Constant rehearsal of what seems bad does nothing to alleviate a situation. Joy is a tonic if we but try to express it.
If you are unhappy, if the good things of life seem to be passing you by, get out your Bible, find a comfortable chair in a room apart from family interruptions, and turn to the book of Psalms. You can’t help but find comfort in words like these: “O Come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with praise.” Lose yourself in the 98th Psalm where the psalmist urges the whole earth into a joyful tribute to God: “make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.” Then he proclaims the importance of harp, trumpets and cornet and even—“let the sea roar”—“let the floods clap their hands”—“let the hills be joyful together.” By this time, isn’t your heart less heavy and your spirit less weary? Aren’t you beginning to feel a sense of the presence and power of a being greater than man? To top it off, revel in Psalm 100 and follow its directions: “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord—Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing—Enter into his gates with thanksgiving.” Why? “For the Lord is good—and his truth endureth to all generations.” Don’t you see? In reality, all is well with you, with me, with the entire universe if we but turn to God joyously and gratefully acknowledge his omnipresence. n
