THE MAGNIFICENT BEACHES OF

by Jack Modica

THE STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL BEACHES of the Hawaiian Island of Maui offer an abundance of soft sand, gentle surf, clear water, swaying palm trees and perfect weather. A number of the island stretches of sand truly stand out, offering the very best swimming and snorkeling conditions, the most spectacular sunsets and island atmosphere. These are the most magnificent beaches in Waileas Beach in South Maui is considered among many beach connoisseurs worldwide to be the best beach in America. A third of a mile

long, this crescent of soft, fine grained sand boasts calm, crystal clear waters and sunsets to make the heart stop. With little wind and a gentle surf, the Pacific invites swimmers and snorkelers alike. Black Sand Beach, otherwise known as Oneuli Beach, is located in Makena just north of a large mound of lava cinders. The Pacific’s waves have pounded the cinders into the stunning black sand that makes up Oneuli. Calm waters transform Black

Sand Beach into a terrific place for swimming and snorkeling. The black sand itself is an attraction; alongside the fish, sea turtles and living coral, it becomes a unique island treasure. If avoiding crowds is a priority, discover Po'olenalena Beach in South Maui. This half mile stretch of sand offers exceptional swimming and unbelievable snorkeling among the sea turtles, schools of tropical fish, and dazzling coral. A disposable underwater

camera is essential to capture this untouched paradise hidden below the ocean’s surface. Once a haven for hippies, Big Beach is now a breathtaking state park. This very popular beach is only two thirds of a mile long, but over one hundred feet wide. The ocean here offers excellent opportunities for swimming and snorkeling. On the right side of Big Beach, you can take a short trail to a lava promontory (an area of high land jutting out into the sea), and enjoy the magnificent view. On the other side, you’ll find Little Beach, which offers more golden

sand and occasionally nudists. Although nudity is unlawful in Hawaii, this small stretch of sand can’t be seen from the road and is, therefore, the beach of choice for those uncomfortable in their swimsuits. In West Maui you will find a picturesque and protected bay at the foot of Kapalua Beach. The hours will wink away as you page through a paperback novel while the gentle breeze ruffles the overhead palms. Kapalua Beach is the perfect spot on Maui to kick back and relax. Another West Maui beach where the water is spectacular is Kahekili Beach Park. The ocean here has a superb sandy bottom. A popular

place for scuba divers, some companies hold introductory shore dives here. If you are traveling here from another part of the island, you may wish to make use of this park has terrific facilities: covered tables, showers, and plenty of parking. Much of the action in West Maui can be found in front of the Kaanapali resorts on the Kaanapali Beach. This is a fabulous place to be while the sun sets. Whether you’re walking along the beach or dining at one of the happening beachside restaurants, you’ll experience a sight you take with you forever. There is little more spectacular than a genuine Maui sunset. A large black lava rock, called Black Rock, separates the two halves of Kaanapali Beach. This is one magnificent spot to go snorkeling. Begin at the Sheraton side and swim around the black lava rock. You’ll see plenty of beautiful fish and living coral. The beach itself is often busy, but not busy enough that it should deter you from visiting. For the best views of the island of Molokai, spend the morning at Slaughterhouse Beach Sure, it sounds like the title of a bad horror movie, but it’s actually a picture postcard stretch of sand. Slaughterhouse Beach, which gets its name from a slaughterhouse that is long gone, is located north of the 32 mile marker on Highway 30. Take the concrete stairway located about a hundred feet below the road. The beaches of Maui are truly some of the best in the world. The Pacific here is friendlier than it is on some of the other isles, and the setting is nothing short of sensational. An hour on a Maui beach can fill you with a lifetime of aloha. n

FEBRUARY 2020

THE EXQUISITE, LOVINGLY crafted home at 5471 German Village Road in West Bend, Wisconsin, is nestled in a beautiful natural setting on a private, 2.3-acre wooded lot on Big Cedar Lake’s desirable east side. Bordered by white pine and hemlock on the southern edge and a 100-acre preserved natural area with hiking trails on the north and west of the property, this exceptional home offers stunning lake and sunset views and a close connection with natural beauty and restoration year-round. This three-level, 3,880-square-foot home is located at the end of a gated, private dead-end road. A curving drive arcs up to the front entry of the home. Ample parking is available in a two-car attached and a two-car detached garage. A finished area above the detached garage is infused with plenty of natural light through Pella windows and westfacing skylights. The home’s lovely yard

features professional landscaping by David Frank and includes a perennial garden accented with stone steps. This exquisite home captures the owners’ attention to artistry, pride in craftsmanship, and love for the unique and appealing living space. Completely remodeled in 2010, the home’s design reflects a passion for the post and beam architectural style; however, the integrity of the home’s powerful existing structure was maintained throughout the remodeling process. The home’s exterior is composed of a pleasing custom mix of Lannon stone in subtly varied hues and cedar siding. A dignified archway above the front entry door is fashioned from Douglas fir beams cut and fashioned onsite. The wood archway offers shelter just outside the front entry; below the archway, lighter-hued Lannon stone pavers form a sturdy front entry walkway.

Within the front door, guests may pause in the comfortable, welcoming foyer area. Natural light warms the front hall/foyer area through sidelight windows and the half window of the front door. Convenient wall hooks offer a spot to hang outerwear, while a convenient cushioned bench offers a place to sit to remove boots or shoes. Just inside the front door, a well-situated powder room includes a Lannon stone and stone sink atop a custom vanity of rough-hewn cedar. The home’s main living room is visible from the front entry, and features light-colored warm neutral walls and a cedar ceiling with Douglas fir beams. A beautiful remote-operated Lannon stone fireplace provides a cozy focus for gathering in this room. The deep fireplace design was inspired by one in the Adirondacks in upstate New York, and radiates additional warmth into the room while also providing ample mantel display space. The unique hearthstone measures between two and two-and-one-half feet wide, and has the special history of being the first stone removed from a quarry at the start of digging. Doors off the living room lead to an elevated covered deck. The deck’s design mirrors that of the living room, with a rough cedar ceiling and Douglas fir beams. Homeowners and their guests can enjoy spectacular sunsets and refreshing lake views from this special west-facing deck. As a unique benefit, the deck features Phantom Screens that can be raised and lowered by remote control. With ample natural western light, this space is ideal for relaxing on warm evenings, and may be enjoyed as either an open-air or a screened-in room. On cooler autumn evenings, homeowners and guests can enjoy visiting here in the glow of the built-in propane fire table. On the east-facing side of the home’s main floor, the artfully-crafted kitchen offers excellent amenities and design. Natural morning light enters the kitchen, welcoming homeowners to the advent of each new day. Warm-toned custom knotty alder cabinets and matching wood beams in the ceiling capture radiant warmth in this inviting space. Durable granite countertops along the wall and on the convenient center island facilitate smooth food preparation while also reflecting quality and elegance. JennAir stainless steel appliances and a dual-fuel range featuring a gas cooktop and electric oven add to the ease of meal preparation and food storage. The kitchen island includes a blend of elegant artistry and luxurious convenience. A copper farm sink is under-mounted in the island’s center, while a drawer microwave at one end of the island tucks away to offer

additional open countertop space. Below the island, ample cabinets offer additional storage space for cookware, dishes, or cookbooks. Pendant lights provide illumination of this space, complementing the warmth of the incoming natural light. The kitchen walls and ceiling feature a special skip-coat plaster finish in a pleasing light neutral hue. This technique is repeated in the home’s living room, dinette, hearth room and dining room as well, offering cohesive artistic warmth. A Lannon stone veneer on the far wall beyond the kitchen continues the home’s overall architectural design. The colors used in this wall mirror those used in the home’s exterior, offering a further unification between the home’s interior and exterior spaces. A hearth room just off the kitchen on the home’s main floor provides a welcoming space to relax and converse, read or entertain. A woodburning fireplace made of multi-hued Lannon stone invites guests and family to gather on chilly evenings. Natural light infuses the room through Pella windows, here and throughout the home. A dry bar to the left of the fireplace in this room includes well-planned wine storage on either side and ultra-durable Dekton countertops. To the right of the fireplace, a cabinet with a storage drawer offers an open area to store fireplace wood. This room’s warm ceiling is artfully crafted of roughed cedar planking with arched Douglas fir beams. An adjoining dining room offers space for an eight-foot dining table. Behind this area, a long buffet with a Dekton countertop and knotty alder cabinets, some with glass display fronts, adds to the elegance of this sun-filled, welcoming room. A dinette adjoining the main living room features a double-sided fireplace, warm wood ceiling, and a simple yet elegant chandelier light fixture. Beautiful, warm-toned hickory floors in this room continue throughout much of the main floor, reminiscent of a welcoming mountain forest lodge or resort. The home’s master bedroom, also located on the main floor, offers a special haven in which to relax and be pampered. West-facing windows offer peaceful lake views, while a convenient ceiling fan allows fresh lake breezes to circulate on warm summer nights. Carpeted floor and a cedar ceiling with Douglas fir beams enclose this room with warmth, creating the feeling of a nurturing retreat. Adjoining the master bedroom, the master bath continues the home’s warm and welcoming design. Knotty alder cabinets nestle beneath a granite countertop that holds two copper sinks. John Pentler, Chairman, ADAMM ( Automobile Dealers Association of Mega Milwaukee ) General Manager, Uptown Motors.

CONTINUING A FAMILY TRADITION n n n

by Anne Kais e r

JOHN PENTLER has successfully achieved a dream that many people aspire to: working in a profession that allows him to express and explore his passions daily. Pentler, General Manager at Uptown Motors, with a location (Uptown Ford Lincoln) at 2111 North Mayfair Road, in Wauwatosa, and two others (Uptown Chevrolet and Uptown Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram) at 1101 and 1111 East Commerce Blvd. in Slinger, is the third generation in his family to enjoy working in the automobile sales industry. Being able to work with his dad, Uptown Motors President Glenn Pentler, and brother, General Sales Manager Mark Pentler, is

FEBRUARY 2020

a special bonus. “It’s a great thing, from a family perspective,” John Pentler said. “I love people and I love working with cars,” Pentler explained. His current work proves to be “the best way to blend those passions.” In his work at Uptown Motors, he enjoys guiding customers through the process of making “one of the bigger purchases” of their lifetimes. Whether a customer is seeking a starter or first car or is upgrading for business needs or to accommodate a growing family, John Pentler is happy to assist. He takes pride in helping people find a car that will fit their lifestyle and its unique needs perfectly. Pentler also

guides vehicle owners as they optimize the lifetime of their car through any necessary repairs or upgrades. Currently, Pentler noted that top-selling brands in his industry have shifted toward crossovers and SUVs. Many buyers “like to sit up higher without being too high,” Pentler explained. According to Pentler, these models “have been taking over the market lately.” Working in the automobile industry offers a stimulating journey through technological advances as they occur. Pentler noted that current safety

15

n n n

technology is “far superior to what it was a few years ago, let alone decades ago.” Current customers are particularly interested in the new 360-degree cameras available in some cars, which allows for a better assessment of what is happening around a vehicle. The newlydeveloped autonomous braking is popular today as well; in this feature, the vehicle is able to sense an imminent collision with an object and apply brakes automatically to prevent a crash. Finally, car mirrors that alert drivers when someone is in their blind spot are also valued new safety innovations. John Pentler is proud to be working at Uptown Motors, and others share his passion for the business. Many employees have been working at Uptown Motors for decades, some for as long as forty years. John Pentler is “dedicated to (his) business and to the customers that help grow the business.” In addition, John Pentler has been a valued board member of Automobile Dealers of Mega Milwaukee, or ADAMM, for almost ten years. ADAMM works on areas of professionalism with local dealers, setting high standards for the industry. One of ADAMM’s

biggest objectives, according to Pentler, is to develop and maintain the workforce needed to maintain the vehicles sold today. Today, in many cases, this means seeking out people who are comfortable working with the new technology used in vehicles as well as the traditional mechanical parts. ADAMM’s community-benefitting projects also go beyond the realm of cars. They partner with a chosen organization, sometimes for twoyear cycles, giving funds from the proceeds of an annual Charity Gala to that organization. This year marks the second year of a partnership with Special Olympics Wisconsin. ADAMM’s previous galas have raised over $2 million in support of local organizations. Members of associated dealers have also gifted funds to many local nonprofits, including Ronald McDonald House, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin and more. According to Pentler, ADAMM “uses resources auto dealers have to do good things in the community.” ADAMM is perhaps best known for their annual auto show, an opportunity to showcase vehicles in the Milwaukee area. This year’s Greater Milwaukee International Car & Truck Show will be held from February 22 through March 1 at the Wisconsin Center, located at

400 West Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Milwaukee. The show includes something for everyone: a wide array of new car models in addition to hybrids, classic cars, antique and custom cars, concept cars, performance accessories and more. Preceding the show, ADAMM holds its annual Charity Gala, open to the public and enjoyed by dealers and vendors as well. Pentler noted that there are usually about 1,000 people in attendance at the event. This year, the GiddyUp Gala will be held Friday February 21 from 7:00 p.m. until midnight, also at the Wisconsin Center. The evening promises to be one of enjoyable celebration, with hors d’oeuvres, dinner stations, beverages, a “country music star silent and live auction,” dancing, and sweet treats. Proceeds from the event will benefit Special Olympics Wisconsin. Tickets for the event are available at www.adamm.com. John Pentler’s success is visible in his passion for the work he does. “I like getting involved with customers when they come in,” he said. His favorite part of facilitating the car-buying process involves making the process fun. He likes to help customers identify the car that best meets their needs. Pentler summarized,” It’s supposed to be fun, buying a car. That’s my job.” n

HAWAII’S IOLONI PALACE A ROYAL RESIDENCE ON AMERICAN SOIL b y El i za b e t h Kelly

n n n

TO VISIT A ROYAL RESIDENCE, you don’t need to go to Buckingham Palace in England. To see a grand building in Italian Renaissance style, you don’t have to travel to Rome either. In fact, you don’t even have to leave United States soil. The Iolani Palace in Honolulu, Hawaii is the only official royal residence in America, and today it houses a museum that attracts 100,000 visitors a year. If you’re traveling to Hawaii, you won’t want to miss the only example of American Florentine architecture in the entire world. The History of the Iolani Palace The palace was originally built by King David Kalakaua to replace the previous Iolani Palace, which was in disrepair. The first royal resdence was more of house than an actual palace, but it had been the most stately home in the city of Honolulu. The palace commissioned by Kink Kalakaua, though, is a four-story palatial building in Italian Renaissance style, with Corinthian columns, imposing gates, carved wood paneling, and stained glass facades. When completed in 1882, the total bill came to $360,000, a sum which nearly bankrupted the local government. The government paid the tab, though, as they wanted to ensure Hawaii’s reputation as a modern nation. Having a lavish palace helped establish Hawaii as an up-and-coming nation on the international scene. Iolani Palace didn’t just stand out because of its unusual architecture. It was also the

first building in Hawaii to have electricity. You might be surprised to learn that the Hawaiian royal residence had electric lights before either the White House or even Buckingham Palace became electrified. While Queen Victoria was going to bed by candlelight, King Kalakaua and his wife flipped a light switch. Royals continued to live in the Iolani Palace for eleven years, until the fall of the monarchy of Hawaii, when Queen Liliuokalani was deposed. When the kingdom was overthrown in 1893, the Queen and all of the currently residing royals were evicted from the palace. Today, it stands as a reminder of Hawaii’s grand monarchy period, and tourists can still get a vivid glimpse of the days before the islands became America’s fiftieth state. Touring the Palace You might be disappointed to learn that you can’t tour the entire museum and grounds on your own, as guided tours are the only way to see the entire palace. Don’t despair, though, as you’ll find the tour guides to be both entertaining and knowledgeable. You might feel like you’re in Japan, as you will be required to put on a pair of booties to walk across the beautiful palace floors. Audio tours allow for self-guided walks,

but they don’t include some of the areas that only docents can go. The museum’s galleries can be toured alone, so if you are interested primarily in the artifacts and collections of the Iolani Palace, you can skip the grounds and the visits to the stately rooms and go straight for the treasures. A guided tour is highly recommended, though, as some of the home’s highlights are its lavish private rooms.

Highlights of the Iolani Palace Museum While the entire palace is not-to-be-missed, there are several bright spots on the tour. The two-story staircase is the only one of its kind you’re likely to see, carved completely out of local koa wood. The Throne Room, the King’s Library and the Dining Room are some of the rooms that have been restored to their former

glory, complete with luxurious furnishings and chandeliers (some of the palace’s rooms remain unfurnished). The highlight of the gallery tour is the chance to see the actual royal crowns, personal relics of Hawaii’s former monarchy. Museum Information The palace is located at South King and Richards Street in downtown Honolulu. Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children between 5 and 13. Children under 5 are not admitted, so you will need to hire a sitter or make alternate plans for half the family if you are traveling together (a distinct downside). You must call ahead to reserve a tours, which take place Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 2:15 pm. Admission is not allowed without a booked reservation, so be sure to call ahead, 808-522-0832. The Iolani Palace is a chance to glimpse a part of our country’s diverse culture that you won’t get to see in any other part of the United States. It’s also a chance to see the stately side of Hawaii’s history, which stands in stark contrast to the island luaus and party scene. While it’s definitely a downside that you can’t take your smaller children, families with older ones will enjoy the chance to experience the culture and history of the island in such stunning surroundings. n

STARTING A HOME REMODELING PROJECT 7 TIPS FOR CHOOSING A QUALIFIED CONTRACTOR n n n

OUTSIDE OF THE HOME ITSELF, remodeling is typically one of the largest investments you can make as a homeowner. While some projects can be tempting to tackle yourself, many larger-scale projects may require hiring a qualified professional. Because remodeling your home is a big undertaking, it’s important to take steps to ensure the professional you hire to perform the work is qualified to complete it to the highest standards of quality and integrity. Consider these tips from the experts at the National Association of the Remodeling Industry to help you make an informed decision when hiring a remodeling contractor. Get Recommendations One of the best ways to find qualified, professional help is through word-of-mouth referrals. Ask your relatives, friends, neighbors

FEBRUARY 2020

or co-workers - particularly if they’ve recently renovated their own homes - if they have any previous experience with companies they would recommend. Also consider searching online for reviews of companies in your area. Stay Local It’s often best to consider established local remodeling companies first, as they are typically more compelled to perform highquality work, which allows their businesses to thrive and remain in the community. Local professionals are also likely to know permit requirements and building codes in your city or county, which can change from year to year. Follow Your Design Aesthetic Whether your home features a midcentury modern, contemporary or farmhouse design style, it’s critical to choose a remodeler who is knowledgeable in the

construction and design of the style of your home. Additionally, a company that specializes in remodeling kitchens may not be suited for a bathroom or bedroom project. Ask for Licenses and Insurance Many states, but not all, require contractors to be licensed, bonded and insured. Ask for copies of licenses and insurance certificates for any remodelers you’re considering to make sure they’re current. Most states also require contractors to carry worker’s compensation, property damage and personal liability insurance for their crews. Contact your state or local licensing agencies to ensure the contractor meets the minimum requirements. Check References Once you’ve narrowed your list of potential contractors, ask for a list of

references you can contact and a portfolio of work. A typical reference list includes 10 or more jobs with dates as well as the customer’s name, address and phone number, and a portfolio should also contain at least 10 projects with photos of the space before work began, during the project and after completion. If possible, also consider visiting a current job site to see first-hand how the contractor operates. Search for Violations or Complaints Because you can’t always rely on a portfolio or references, it’s important to also check with your local consumer affairs office or the Better Business Bureau to ensure there are no complaints on record for the contractors you’re considering, which may help further narrow your list. Compare Apples to Apples While a number of different factors goes into every remodeling project, be sure all contractors you solicit bids from are using the same scope and quality of work requirements. Discuss any significant variations in price or timelines and be wary of any substantially lower estimates. Find more tips for selecting a contractor at remodelingdoneright.com. n

eye-catching focus for luxuriating after a long day. The master bath includes a separate vanity as well, a convenient spot to prepare to greet the day or embrace an evening out. West-facing windows in the master bath offer an ever-shifting portrait of the lake and surrounding foliage throughout the seasons. The home’s midlevel features three additional bedrooms, each offering desirable west-facing lake views. The southwest-facing bedroom is sun-filled and warm, with soft buttercream-toned walls and an exceptionally soft frieze twisted yarn carpet. Knotty alder sliding doors on the closet in this room offer a special touch, reflecting the rustic elegance of the home’s overall design. A second bedroom, also offering lake views from the bed, features a simple ceiling light, Grecian white walls, and soft carpeting. The third bedroom includes twin-size extra-long built-in bunk beds in addition to ample space for a larger size bed. Soft carpeting, lake views from each bed, and a soft color palette add to the appeal of this room. Between two of the bedrooms, a well-planned gathering space or lounge area offers guests a secondary living area to meet or converse when the rest of the household is still sleeping. the bedrooms. A warm cedar shiplap ceiling offers track lighting, while wall sconces fashioned of thin-stone mica glass and oil-rubbed bronze finish metal offer additional lighting along the walls. West-facing windows provide glimpses of the lake and sunsets. This room may also double as an office or workspace for guests. At the lake level, or lowest level of the home, a secondary kitchen space at the base of the stairs provides another focal point for entertaining guests or family. Consistent with the home’s overall aesthetic, this space features knotty alder cabinets and an island with a granite countertop and an under-counter drawer microwave. This second kitchen also offers a convenient dishwasher and dual-fuel range. A dry bar nearby includes a wine and beer refrigerator with a glass front and a granite counter workspace above. Adjoining the kitchen on the lower level, a carpeted family room offers an excellent spot to entertain and relax. A gas fireplace located in the corner provides welcoming warmth for gatherings. Ceiling speakers additionally help to support use of this room as a home theater room for nights of movie or television viewing. This room also features Douglas fir ceiling beams and a Tasmanian oak floor, an excellent, highly durable hardwood. As an added benefit, and for those who enjoy a little mystery, the room includes a secret storage space. Homeowners can swing open a door-like bookcase along one wall to reveal this extra storage area. A bathroom on the lower level offers convenience, accessibility and artistry. This room pampers guests with stylish knotty alder cabinets, granite countertops, a copper under-mounted sink, and a tiled shower with a frameless glass door. Also on the lower level, the home’s exercise room allows for the comfortable pursuit of fitness activities year-round. Outside the kitchen at the lower or lake level, a covered deck encourages moments of outdoor relaxation. Phantom Screens may be lowered by remote to transform this space into a huge screened porch. Outdoor-rated ceiling fans and lights are suspended from a rough cedar ceiling with cedar beam accents. The deck itself is fashioned from Ipe wood, and will enjoy a notable and extensive lifespan. Also outdoors, a charcoal grill mounted into an area with cement countertops provides an excellent venue for backyard picnics. The home at 5471 German Village Road gifts owners a unique blend of artistic craftsmanship, rustic elegance, and plentiful amenities. Offering a blend of privacy and an outstanding community in the surrounding lake properties, this home is a rare and delightful property. n FEBRUARY 2020

STILLNESS IS A RARE COMMODITY. It has no purchase value. Stillness is the lake between sunset and twilight when not a ripple disturbs the last gold, pink and lavender reflections of a rapidly disappearing ball of flame. Stillness is the outer trail at the dawn of a new day when not a twig crackles, when the night roaming forest animals, large and small, have blended into a watchful immobility. Stillness is the fragrance of a rosebud waiting to be released. Stillness is the first snowfall, gently, softly steady, that makes of our forest a new world. It may be a forerunner of icy surfaces and penetrating cold, but for the moment it is a soothing stillness covering like a warm blanket the marigold bed. Stillness is God in expression. Don’t accept that statement too lightly. Nor must you confuse stillness with silence. Silence is the absence of sound. Stillness is easing oneself into that Invisible Something within oneself that is greater than anything external to oneself. Does that seem too difficult a state to achieve? Only if life on the physical and mental level is of greater importance to you than life built on the spiritual. In a talk with a young woman in her late teens, she admitted she had once attempted suicide. Fortunately, she was found in time to be saved. She was no drug addict. She had never been in any kind of trouble. Her explanation? “Everything is all mixed

up. Nobody seems happy. What’s going to happen to this world?” She loves children, is a much-in-demand baby sitter, and wants to be a social worker. “I want to help kids. They sure need it.” Stillness is no part of youth’s thinking. Caught up in today’s pressures, they are fighting more than their immaturity can handle. Homes, schools, churches are no longer meeting their needs, and specifically that means parents, teachers, ministers or priests. A book high on the best seller list emphasizes the importance of stillness. “Commune with your heart…and be still,” the Psalmist advises. Surely when we come face to face with the within of ourselves, the resulting stillness must be spiritual fruitage. “I will both lay me down in peace and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.” The most simple and yet profound directive on stillness is found in Psalm 46: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Psychiatry would be less in demand; neurasthenia would decline could we accept the depth of meaning in those eight words. To “know that I am God” is consciously to shut out everything but God. To “be still” is to achieve the ultimate in peace, to dwell in the secret place of the Most High. Remember, stillness is God in expression. n
