Savor the Romance

Washington House Inn

How long have you been in business?

Coffeeville Company has opened its doors in Jackson to public 7 years ago (2016).

How did you get started?

I created Coffeeville Co. with a vision of providing a unique coffeehouse experience that reflects European elegance while embracing the local history and charm. With the purchase of the historic log home in Jackson, WI in 2014. Coffeeville Company Brand was born.

What changes have you seen over the years open?

I have noticed market trends changing with direction in need for quicker service, easier forms for ordering, and needing employees with great work ethic and the perception.

What do you most love about your Industry?

My nature is determination, dedication and visionary leadership. One of the key elements in my philanthropic division is to believe in giving back to the communities we serve, care of people while staying true to our core values of quality, innovation. This is what I love the most about the service industry.

What are some of the common myths you come across in your business?

One comes to my mind, customers who visit us for the first time have a hard time believing that this is their first time stepping into our Cafe in Jackson and realizing that we have been in business for many years... “...how did we miss this?... we live in a surrounding neighborhood…” We get that a quite a lot.

What message would you most like to share with people?

We are Coffeeville Co., the ultimate Wisconsin destination for coffee aficionados and history enthusiasts alike. Our historic coffeehouses provide a truly immersive and unforgettable experience. We are a must-stop Coffeehouse and Roastery and the only one in the State that serve and sell 100% Arabica coffee that is USDA Organic Certified. We pride ourselves on offering one-of-a-kind specialty drinks that are sure to tantalize visitors taste buds. But our offerings don’t stop at coffee alone. Customers should be prepared to be dazzled in a culinary paradise, where our food and bakery menu is nothing short of extraordinary. We are driven by an unwavering passion for creativity and imagination in the coffee and food industry.

Please explain CAFE’23...what is it?

When will this take place?

In addition to our menu offerings, we provide a variety of community-driven events and activities, always finding new ways of costumer engagement and establishing brand loyalty. Our Annual CAFE ‘Coffeeville Autumn Family Event’ that is hosted yearly on the second week of September in our open outdoor spaces, brings hundreds of people interested in our variety of vendor offerings of products and services. We also host live entertainment of local and national artists performances. Our POP-UP Shop & POP-UP Corner is designed to support local vendors to promote their products and services.

Lawson House

BED & BREAKFAST

How long have you been in business?

We started operating the B&B in July 2015. The previous owners ran it as a B&B for about 8 years before that.

How did you get started?

“I had no intention of buying a bed-andbreakfast ever in my life, not on my radar, not something I ever thought I would do,” said Monica Tennie.

In 2011, my husband, Bill, died from cancer. I went to a grief support group and met Helen Skiba, whose husband, Tom, also died from cancer. “Our husbands passed away six weeks apart.” We became good friends.

During one of their conversations, Skiba told Tennie that her friends stayed at The Lawson House Bed and Breakfast while they were in town for her husband’s funeral.

In 2015, Skiba told Tennie that the bedand-breakfast she had mentioned was for sale. We both went online to look at pictures, and saw there was going to be an open house. We wanted to see what it looked like, just for fun, so we went.

“When we walked out, I turned to Helen and said, ‘This is crazy, but I think I’m supposed to buy this,’” Tennie said. “I’m a

financial planner, so I’m not prone to making large, impulse decisions like this.”

When they looked at it a second time, Tennie said the previous owner came out with tears in his eyes and told them about guests who seemed down when they arrived and left rejuvenated.

“I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m really supposed to do this,’” she said. “So, I did.”

What changes have you seen over the years ?

We have developed some great relationships with our guests and many of them feel like family to us. We have also noticed that many people are trying bed & breakfasts for the first time in the past few years. They prefer the smaller lodging and homey feel.

What do you most love about your B & B business?

We love our guests! We get to connect with so many awesome people from all over the world and all different walks of life. We love to hear their stories about their families, their lives and their interests. They are what make owning a B&B so much fun!!

What are some of the common myths you come across in your business?

Many people think that opening and running a bed & breakfast would be so much work and beyond their capacity. We were blessed to have basically walked into a running bed & breakfast and just keep it going.

Some people also “fear” that they will be uncomfortable sharing breakfast with the other guests. Once they stay here, they leave realizing that it was a low key fun way to spend breakfast.

What message would you most like to share with people?

Our bed & breakfast feels like home. You will feel comfortable when you walk in the door and feel appreciated and welcomed during your stay. It truly is a place to relax, retreat and renew. One of my favorite quotes is “We are all just walking each other home.” By Ram Dass. If I can help someone on their walk through life, that brings me great joy!

What are some area destinations that are close to your location that guests love to go to?

We have so many great things within a short distance. The Boerner Botanical Gardens are right behind us. American Family Field is less than 15 minutes away. The Harley Museum is another guest favorite. Nobody ever needs to go hungry around here either. We have Ann’s Italian Restaurant, Hale House and Sandra’s on the Park within a mile. We also had a guest from California tell us the Tanpopo on Hwy-100 has some of the best sushi and ramen they’ve ever had.

What is the typical guest reservations you see? couples? families? business travelers?

We have a lot of regulars who come into town to visit family. Sometimes it’s because their parents moved into a senior community, andthey’ve come to visit them. Other times it’s their children or siblings. Many of them grew Continued on page 38

Continued from page 34 up here and are back visiting the old stomping grounds. We also have couples who are here to attend a wedding at the Botanical Gardens, sometimes as a guest and sometimes as the bride and groom. During the week, we often have business travelers who prefer a more home like atmosphere.

What would you like people to know about your business?

Our house is a 1914 craftsman bungalow with a very warm feeling. We love to have people near and far stay with us and enjoy the history of the house. If you live in the area, give us a call and we would be happy to give you a tour.

We have met people from almost every family that has owned the house. They have told us so many great stories that we love to share with guests.

How was this beautiful location found and chosen?

It was just divine intervention!!!

Do you still have availability in 2023 at this time?

Yes, although summer fills up fast What is the biggest compliment customers give you?

It feels like home. I can’t wait to come back.

What are you most proud of?

I’m not sure if I would call it proud but I am most grateful that I followed my heart and decided to take on this adventure.

How many employees/Family work with you?

Helen and I operate the bed and breakfast on a day to day basis. We couldn’t do it without the help of our families. My daughter Lexi helps with cleaning. Helen’s daughter Amanda and son in law Andrew help with everything from interior decorating, gardening knowledge and maintenance. We have a big family crew that helps with setting up the Christmas decorations including Helen’s grandsons Gabe and Eli who help with the Christmas lights.

What are you most grateful for?

We are grateful for the support of all those who made this fun journey possible and for the divine intervention that led us here.

Who/what can you credit your success?

The bed & breakfast has such a good energy that it really does most of the work. The success comes in being a steward of such an amazing property. And the previous owners, Julie and Jerry Ziemer, gave us great tracks to run on. We kept the website and phone number and they shared so much knowledge from their years of being innkeepers. They also did a great job of furnishing the house which allowed us to walk in and start running it with minimal work. ~

Dogs c DOYLE‘S

How long have you been in business?

Doyle’s Dogs opened in 2008. This is our 15th year.

How did you get started?

We first purchased what is now the hotdog stand, which was an original Pure Oil gas station built in the summer of 1935. Not knowing what we’d go with the building once we knew we had to have it, Pat’s previous experience while in high school was working at an independent food stand in Waukesha, we realized this could be a perfect venue for a Chicago style hotdog stand. We attended “hotdog university” in Milwaukee to learn the basics and opened in 2008. We first sold using a classic, mobile cart in downtown Lake Mills. We eventually moved the cart to “the stand” and sold there until we decided to move inside. As our seasonal business grew we expanded the building while maintaining its character. An ideal opportunity arose and we opened our second location year round in downtown Lake Mills.

WISCONSIN COUNTRY LIFE Summer 2023 49
Patrick & Mary Doyle, talk about their Lake Mills, Wisconsin business.

MASTER CONFECTIONERS FOR OVER 100 YEARS!

Doyle’s Dogs

What changes have you seen over the years open?

We went from an independent hotdog cart with the two of us working it, to having two locations and an average of 18 employees. When selling on the street we offered one size hotdog, chips, and a drink. We now offer 2 size hotdogs, brats, polish, chili cheese on anything, 3 sizes of Italian beef, chips, drinks, cup of chili, Mac ‘n cheese, veggie dogs and gluten free buns. During the fall and winter we add soup on Fridays only.

What do you most love about your Industry?

We love working and meeting people and providing a fun safe place for families to come spend time together.

What are some of the common myths you come across in your business?

One myth is just because you own a small business you are rich. Running a business can be challenging, but the rewards and benefits are worth it.

What message would you most like to share with people?

We are privileged to be involved in the community as we have been. If there are things you value in your community, please support them on a regular basis.

What would you like people to know about your business?

We strive to give you a quality product at a reasonable price and a positive experience so you will return again and again.

What is the biggest compliment customers give you?

The biggest compliment is the food is yummy and the atmosphere is friendly. We want your visit to be remembered by good food and a family friendly atmosphere in a Norman Rockwell-like experience.

What are you most proud of?

We are proud we took a blighted property and turned it into a destination.

www.niemannscandies.com

How many employees/Family work with you?

We employ approximately 18 individuals.

What are you most grateful for?

We are great full for the continued community support.

Who/what can you credit your success?

Being able to see a vision, that at times, no one else could see. When you start something you need to be the most passionate person in the room. You need to see a way to move forward. “Doyle’s Dogs, the best dressed dog in town.”.  ~

Healthy Summer Treat

Hawaiian Huli Huli Chicken

Recipe courtesy of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 30 minutes

Servings: 4

Sauce:

2 tablespoons ketchup

2 tablespoons light soy sauce

2 tablespoons honey

2 teaspoons orange juice

1 teaspoon garlic (about 1 clove), minced

1 teaspoon ginger, minced

12 ounces boneless, skinless chicken breast (about 2 large breasts), cut into 1-inch cubes (about 24 cubes)

1 cup fresh pineapple, diced (about 24 pieces)

8 wooden skewers (6 inches each), soaked in water

To make sauce: Combine ketchup, soy sauce, honey, orange juice, garlic and ginger; mix well. Separate into two bowls and set aside.

Preheat grill to medium-high heat.

Preheat oven to 350 F.

Alternately thread three chicken cubes and three pineapple chunks on each skewer.

Grill skewers 3-5 minutes on each side. Brush or spoon sauce from one bowl onto chicken and pineapple every other minute. Discard remaining sauce from first bowl. To prevent chicken from drying out, finish cooking to minimum internal temperature of 165 F in oven. Using clean brush or spoon, coat with sauce from remaining bowl before serving. ~
