We Can rock Berlin:

Birthday party of EYP in Berlin through the eyes of one Ukrainian

2

2nd Issue August 2010

The capital of Germany has hosted for years the summer birthday party of EYP. This year was not an exception. 26th of June left its trace in the history as the Saturday of noise, laugh, beer and Würstchen in the inside yard of Sophienstrasse 28. If I compared Berlin party to anything - it would be a lottery ticket. For relatively low price (low cost airlines respect Berlin as the important destination) you get the high chance to win a jackpot by meeting your very good eyp-friend by chance. Exactly for this reason, the excitement was felt in the air! Traditional discussion rounds on further development of EYP has proved that EYP is never just about fun – constant personal and organization development has always been a priority. However, Euroconcert as the second part of the program brought a really party spirit with Shamal Ratnayaka’s song (and scarf-image change) and the hot latina movements of EYP-Ukraine’s representative Marichka Hud. Remember if you already want to visit Berlin party next year – talent show is your chance! They are giving free beer to the audience from the very beginning! The audience has never been so supportive!:) But the culmination of the celebration was an unexpectable National Committees award in several nominations. The voting was anonymus, conducted by the very trustworthy source and expressed the opinion of the whole EYP International. Here are the results: - «the most environmental friendly national committee» - EYP-Germany - «the most active national committee» - EYP-Germany - «the most attractive national committee» - EYP-Germany - «the most stunning national committee» - EYP-Germany... (For the reason of paper economy, all other nominations you may find on the shelf in the frames at the place of Martin Hoffmann – ex-president of EYP-Germany) All in all, Berlin is worth-going and not only because it is the capital of the countryEurovision 2010 winner and even not because German football team is third in the world, but because there will always be a door open for you – somewhere in the Sophienstrasse...

During the EYP-Ukraine alumni summer tour mini-sessions took place in two beautiful cities - Simferopol and Berdyansk. EYP welcomed newcomers from Simferopol on the 21-22 of June. Though hot weather and awesome beaches somewhere pretty close to the venues were supposed to be cornerstones of the session, president of the session -Nastya Kot and the team of official managed to create the best example of what we call EYP experience. 27 delegates had an opportunity to enjoy the two-day session that consisted of Teambuilding, Committee work, and GA. Mini-session in Berdyansk (12-13 of July) was probably the first single-committee session in the history of EYP-Ukraine. What can be more exciting than sunny weather, warm Sea of Azov, group of ambitious and full of new ideas delegates, and best of the venues? Session president Jindrich Rusin officially opened the event in the City Council. The Opening Ceremony attracted representatives of youth organizations and local media. Delegates were surprisingly active during the Teambuilding, and have shown Đ° surprisingly high level of activity while working on the resolution.. The Berdyansk State Pedagogical University welcomed the session participants for CW. The session resolution was written during the GA time. The last but not least mini-session took place in Mykolaiv on the 25-26 of July.

People say that everything in our lives happens for a reason. No one can be sure if it is true. But it is obvious that if you get up earlier than 12 o’clock in the morning on SATURDAY, there has to be a very good reason for this. On the 26th of June it was the annual General Assembly of EYP Ukraine. And it was definitely worth waking up for! It all started with the Quest of finding the building of Edinburgh Business School, where the GA took place. After passing through all the doors to the fancy modern classroom, participants felt like they’re about to get MBA diplomas in EYP studies right away. As one of the main aims of GA is informing newcomers about the activities and structure of the organisation, as well as about the conducted and upcoming EYP events, the first presentation was called “What is EYP?”. It was brilliantly delivered by the Board Member on International Activities, Oleg Shimanskyy. You might have guessed from the name of the speaker, that serious and important information about history and goals of organisation was diluted with just right amount of jokes, smart comments and fake French accent. Presentation ended on a high note, with a “promise” that after joining EYP, you are guaranteed to get a swift transaction from “v konakte” to “Facebook”, and many possibilities for personal development. Introduction of EYP-UA departments followed shortly after and was concluded by the President of EYP- Ukraine Oksana Andrusyak. The massage was that we should not limit ourselves with only one department. We can do anything! Somehow, the main “dish” of GA appeared to be fundraising training, conducted by The Vice-President of EYP-Ukraine Illya Symonenko. During the training all participants learned a lot about importance of fundraising, memorized 8 fundraising tips, laughed at bad fundraising ideas, and understood that one has to be “probivnoj” to fundraise money. To make the training even more eventful and to see what people have actually learned

2nd Issue August 2010

from the presentation, Illya organised practical part of the training – he divided all participants into 3 teams and assigned each of them a social project for which they had to draft a fundraising plan. And let the best team win! After heated discussions three projects were presented to competent jury. They all were realistic and creative. But not as creative as the prize for the first place! It was Cabbage, representing “kapusta” (meaning money). It was even funnier, because this cabbage, after a closer look appeared to be “Iceberg” salad. That’s how everyone learned another lesson from our own “fundraising guru” – “Sometimes, when you ask for “kapusta” you can get salad, but, at the same time, when you ask for salad, you can get lucky and receive some “kapusta” in the end”. Nothing lasts forever, and as the song goes “…all the good things come to an end” even if we don’t want them to. That’s the story with GA. Everybody enjoyed it so much, and didn’t want to go, that “farewell” part lasted for more than an hour. General Assembly is truly a great occasion to gather the new and experienced members of EYP from all over Ukraine. So see You, at the next GA!

On the 15th, 22nd and 29th of May volunteers coordinated by the European Youth Parliament Ukraine celebrated Europe Days in three picturesque Ukrainian cities: Kyiv, Kherson and Mariupol. This year, just as in previous years since 2003, EYP-Ukraine has cooperated successfully with the EU Delegation to Ukraine as its youth partner. The members of EYP-Ukraine coordinated the work of volunteers in the tents of European countries, public debates, language and dance schools, as well as art corners. The Europe Day Celebrations in Kherson and Mariupol were organised by the EU Delegation to Ukraine and were dedicated to the 60th Anniversary of the Schumann Declaration, which laid the foundation of the United Europe. The celebrations began in Kyiv. Despite the fact that this year the European Village was open only for two hours, everyone present in Khreshatyk could visit the tents of many different European countries, speak with the representatives of the embassies, obtain interesting and useful information, as well as take part in quizzes and competitions, which were held by the volunteers. The Europe Day in Kyiv ended with the European Schumann’s Parade along Khmelnytskogo, Volodymyrska, Sofiyivska and Khreshatyk streets. The volunteers and any the general publichad the opportunity to take part in the parade. A week later the Europe Day celebration came to Kherson. It began with the performances of the local musical and dance bands, after which the Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine and the representatives of the local authorities greeted everyone. Despite the rain, which began several hours later, there were still plenty of people willing to learn more about the different European countries, their languages and traditional dances. The rain also couldn’t prevent the unique football match from taking place at the nearby stadium. The two teams playing consisted of EU diplomats and the representatives of the Kherson city authorities. Until the very end of the game there was tension among the spectators, since the score kept changing rapidly. But in the end friendship won - the game was played with a neutural score of 3:3. In the evening the main stage of the European Village welcomed performances from the Ukrainian Gorchitza Live Project and the band from UK Kosheen. The Europe Day celebration ended with spectacular fireworks, which the volunteers could admire from the main stage.

Europe Days in Kyiv, Mariupol’ and Kherson showed our true European spirit

The Europe Day celebration in Mariupol also began with a parade of youth sports teams and representatives of the local youth organisations. After the official opening ceremony of the Europe Day in Mariupol and the European Village the EU Ambassadors together with the Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine planted young birch trees to mark the opening of the new European Park in the centre of Mariupol. During the European Village the visitors were entertained by dance and music bands from Spain, Hungary and other European countries, as well as local bands. At the end of the celebration everyone enjoyed the fantastic performances by two Ukrainian bands: Gorchitza Live Project and Skryabin.

2nd Issue August 2010

I’m sure everyone knows that our country has been completely free and independent for 19 years now. Everyone also knows that our country wants to become a part of European Community not only geographically, but also legally and economically. But the fact is that for the whole 10 years now, Ukraine is a respective member of European Parliament. European Youth Parliament:) And we did outstanding job for these 10 years! Of course we all know that, but I bet none of you ever thought of the exact figures. So here’s a little bit of food for thought: • General number of EYPers all over Ukraine is above 550 ppl.! And, just in case you were wondering, 75% of Ukrainian EYPers are girls, and only 25% - boys. (As you can see, EYP guys are very lucky to be surrounded by beauty, intellect, harmony and European values) • The biggest number of students EYP-UA have so far reached in Kyiv, Ostroh, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhya (Who knows, maybe Ostroh will become European culture capital one day with students like that?) • But most active EYP-UA branches in terms of contribution to our activities and sessions’ organisation still are Kyiv, Sumy, Lviv and Kharkiv branches. (Well, of course, most EYPholics, workaholics, chocoholics, shopaholics, and other –“holics” of Ukraine live in these cities) • And now, just look at the map of Ukraine and take a moment to enjoy the view of EYP-UA slowly but surely growing and “conquering” all the regions of our inimitable Motherland.

23% of EYPers live in the North region of Ukraine (Zhytomyrska, Kyivska, Sumska oblasts) 23% - South (Crimean AR, Odeska, Mykolaivska, Khersonska, Zaporizhska oblasts) 22% - West (Lvivska, Zakarpatska, Ivano-Frankovska, Chernivetska, Volynska, Rivnenska oblasts) 16% - Center (Khmelnytska, Vinnytska, Ternopilska, Cherkaska, Poltavska, Kirovohradska oblasts) 16% - East (Kharkivska, Luhanska, Donetska, Dnipropetrovska oblasts).
