VILLAGE
ow long has it been since a neighbor brought a casserole or called to tell you your garage door was open? Here in Palm Beach County, two women and their families are doing more than neighborly acts of kindness. They are raising neighborhood children without giving a thought to color or ethnicity. Meet Tracy and Mona: Mothers and wives dedicated to their families. Yet a few years ago, both had children from the neighborhood befriend their sons and daughters. And how their lives have changed is something to admire.
BY LISA GOODMAN
Tracy does that and much more. The two speak about school, drugs, sex, abuse, and hygiene – many topics that parents work hard to openly discuss. The relationship is strong with the teen calling Tracy “Mom”. She cannot imagine their lives without him in their family even when struggles occur. This teen is eager for approval and lets her know when Shawn gives him a hug or smile. At one point, he told Tracy, “When my mom left, I had a great big hole in my heart. Now I have you and the hole isn’t so big.” Mona’s story is similar with three Haitian children wandering into her life. The 10-year-old boy now lives in Mona and Matt’s home, sharing a room with their son. The two older girls, ages 15 and 13, live with their mother but spend time at Mona’s. “They chose us,” Mona explains. “It started out with them needing pencils for school, then staying for dinner. The father eventually asked if his son could live with us. At that point, I couldn’t say ‘no’.” Mona has guardianship at school for the boy. She carries a letter signed by the parents, now divorced, granting her permission for medical treatment in an emergency. Mona and her family have attended school graduations, welcomed them at holiday celebrations and have created new traditions together. When asked if he is her son, Mona says, “Yes, that’s my kid.”
Tracy first met an adorable 6-year-old boy and his older sister in church. She and her husband wondered about the parents, but continued to be friendly with the children for about a year. By that time, Tracy had given them bikes, rides home, and play dates with her children. Eventually the sister returned to the Bahamas with the mother but the young boy stayed with his Haitian father and other male adults. Fast forward 7 years and the now 13-year-old stays with Tracy’s family on the weekends and weekdays after school until bedtime. She taught him to tie his shoes, swim and ride a bike. He is included in the holiday card photos and celebrations. Tracy arranged for him to attend the Adopt-a-Family after care program, camp at the YMCA, and join her kids in daily classes of Capoeira, a Brazilian martial arts program. Tracy has seen improvement in the kids’ school work, focus and self-esteem. She is hoping this becomes an avenue for this young teen to improve his life. Over the years, Tracy and her husband Shawn have been in contact with the boy’s father. Although he does not contribute financially, he does monitor school work and any medical needs. At times, he asks that Tracy speak with his son regarding his school work.

Mona’s role with the teenage girls includes discussions on puberty, self-respect, acne, and bra shopping. She worries about the oldest daughter and gives her tools to deal with her disappointments and anger. Without sugar-coating the problem, Mona explains how to deal with frustrations in life in a mature way. (Continues on Page 23)
CARING FOR THE COMMUNITY
C
hristopher House of Hope was born from a father’s tragedy as a way to give back. After learning that his son died in a DUI accident at 17, Chris Occhipinti found a way to honor his son’s memory. Now, Chris is paying it forward. With his son’s memory as his main motivator, Chris gives back to the community via Christopher House of Hope (CHOH). Taking in people that need a hand up, including those that are returning to society from prison sentences, homeless, abused, etc., Chris provides a variety of programs and basic needs for hundreds each year. Anyone that needs a hand up, Chris acts as a “Friend of the Court” along with CHOH. Chris and the program are well-received by the Sherriff ’s Office and Political Offices. This 4-month inpatient program provides residents with a clean, safe, sober environment, the opportunity to work, and the tools needed to become a productive member of society. “Everyone calls me ‘Dad’,” Chris explains. “God gave me this responsibility, and I take it very seriously. When a woman gets her kids back, that makes me feel like a million bucks!” Beaming with pride, this energetic father figure goes into details about the people that have been through the CHOH program. Whatever they need, Chris provides. If they have not seen their parents, he arranges a meeting. If they want to visit with their children, Chris makes it happen. Once they prove their trustworthiness, Chris finds them work. About 52% make it successfully through the program – one of the best rates around. But out of those that leave, 100% come back to CHOH for another try.

For every parent whose child went down a bad path, CHOH acts as a resource. Chris sympathizes with parents waiting for that “call” and explains how for some, it is a relief. That is why he offers support groups for parents that give them the tools and emotional stamina necessary to help their child. When asked what his son would say about CHOH, Chris is stumped. “I’d like to think that he would say something like, “Dad, you hit it outta the park!” But the reality is that I don’t know because he was only 17 when he died,” says Chris. CHOH is thankful for its role in the community and has goals to help as many people as possible with its programs, support groups, and eventually a radio hotline-type show. Aside from monetary donations, Chris is always reaching out to business owners for jobs. The government will pay an employer 100% of the salary, FICA, and worker’s compensation for people working at a business and enrolled in the CHOH program. If you would like to help CHOH, call (561) 654-0654.

PETS
M
any people know about the dangers to dogs and cats during the summer season, but for our more nontraditional pets, there are equally significant dangers during this time. Some of our pets come from cooler areas of the world, and are much more sensitive to heat. Chinchillas, guinea pigs, and even domesticated rabbits are examples and can very easily die of heatstroke when put outside in the sun. You’d think tropical parrots can handle our heat, but many species also come from areas that don’t get so warm (being under the canopy in the rain forest can stay surprisingly cool).
An all-volunteer, registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing, vetting, and rehoming dogs from kill shelters. Adopt a Rescued Dog * Become a Dog Foster * Sponsor a Dog in Need Website: www.happytailsdogrescue.org www.happytailsdogrescue.org Email: info@happytailsdogrescue.org
Leaving birds and other uncommon pets on a patio or other outside place all night, especially during the warmer months, is significantly dangerous. Raccoons and other nighttime predators might mistake your pet as a free take-out dinner. Nearby insects are also a potential threat as many carry disease. If you have any questions about the potential dangers of summer for your exotic pet, please feel free to call for further information.

Pictured above is Victoria, together with rescued poodle Pooh Bear, who we saved from a kill shelter. Once rescued, he needed major surgery for an anal hernia; after which he was nursed back to health by his foster mom who later adopted him! This is just one of the many success stories of the dogs we have helped save. If you are passionate about animals and want to play a part in helping to save the lives of dogs, let us know. Help us help them; we currently are looking for sponsors and fosters.

KIDS’ CORNER
Do you read your kids’ text messages?
BY NINA ANSCHUETZ
“As long as I am paying the bill and she is under 18, if I want to read the texts, I will...as long as they don’t delete them!” “I don’t know. It would be none of my business, but kids are getting into all sorts of crazy stuff nowadays.” “My parents wouldn’t have let me have a cell phone, but if I had one, they would have snooped, definitely.” Many parents feel this helps ensure that your child is being appropriate, and most importantly, that he or she is not communicating with someone they should not be talking to. The most important thing is that you tell your kids your family’s rules for what is and isn’t acceptable text behavior. Remind them that any text can be forwarded to an unintended audience -- and texts that involve drugs, sex, or other illegal things can get kids into real legal trouble. If you do decide to sneak a peek, be prepared to see things you won’t like! There is a program that will monitor cell phone calls, text messages, instant messaging, picture messages, and email. This will enable you to be notified when your child receives any of the above, as well as have access to the content. You receive the same message as your child. Each day your child receives a message that tells them his or her content has been reported to the parent, so your child is aware of the cell phone monitoring. www.mymobilewatchdog.com

Where Oh Where
Has My Gall Bladder Gone? BY MARIA BOTWIN
I
’d like to have my gall bladder back please. Truly, I know it is here in my body because I have been digesting fats very nicely, thankyouverymuch. Now, please, give back my gall bladder! You see, about a year ago, I had cortisone injected in my ear. I had three separate injections at a local hospital under general anesthesia. So I was OUT for it. However, the hospital billed my insurance company for the laparoscopic removal of my gall bladder. I only noticed this because my copay for that visit was much larger than the other two identical ear procedures. Firstly, I did all the right things. I checked my abdomen for any scars or spots that might indicate someone used a scalpel on me: negative. I called my ENT’s office and they assured me, as I suspected, that my very capable physician did not venture below the thyroid gland for the ear procedure I had or typically any other procedure, for that matter. I called my insurance company and the representative sounded like she did not believe me about my gall bladder and quite possibly thought I had a frontal lobotomy while they had me under as well. At this point, I was pretty sure someone made a mistake and it should be fixed. I had to be the advocate for my internal organs, at least while I am living. I called the records department at the hospital and they told me that only the billing department could help me. So, instead of medical personnel, accountants were responsible for the excision of my beloved gall bladder. With one missed number, the billing department could remove in seconds what it would take a surgeon hours to accomplish. That’s why I don’t have a gall bladder anymore. Medical Errors are a reality to many people receiving care, no matter how many
14 | Fabulous 40rties | Summer 2012
safeguards are put in place to prevent them. A study conducted by Christopher Landrigan, MD, MPH of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, along with other doctors from Harvard and Stanford University Medical Schools reported that medical errors, despite improvements by local government, have remained constant over a 5-year period. Why does this happen in a country that has the best healthcare in the world? Well, Lauren Ellerman, a lawyer from Virginia writes on her website that shortage of staff, lack of knowledge, not following rules or procedures, communication problems or just sheer neglect account for adverse outcomes. A staggering amount of deaths and injuries occur due to medical errors every year. My
case is paltry compared to that. However, these mishaps cost hundreds of billions of dollars according to an article in the April 2011 issue of “Health Affairs”. If I learned anything about this gall bladder fiasco it is that you must be your own health advocate. If you cannot understand the system, ask for help from a relative or friend, especially someone who works in healthcare somehow. The Society for Healthcare Consumer Advocacy has a website with helpful links as well (http:// www.shca-aha.org/). As for me, I will continue to retrieve my missing body part even though it leaves me with a taste of bile.

A strong believer that teachers must constantly develop professionally, she is an adjunct professor for Barry University. Hope is proud of her 2 teenage daughters, their academic success and volunteer work. Hope’s husband Carl has been a Pratt Whitney employee for over 25 years. The Shirey family also includes their two rescued dogs and two rabbits. Hope looks forward to her weekly Zumba class with instructor, Donnamae, a positive force and inspiration. Hope enjoys cooking, baking, camping, volunteering, sewing, and reading. She is grateful to her brother-in-law, Jeff Miller who nominated her.
Cut short, Hope’s dark brown hair color lacked shine. Wanting a color that was rich, I darkened her hair with a rich chocolate brown, adding warmth. For the cut, I shortened the back length with a slight wedge for body that will grow into an asymmetrical bob, and brought the hair forward to softly frame her face. Hope can easily style to a sleek, sophisticated finish or mess it up to show flirty texture. To style, I used KMS Volumizing Mousse, a lighthold finishing spray from Moroccan Oil and a touch of Moroccan Oil Light, for polish.

Makeup
For Hope’s makeup, we went natural but fresh. I evened her skin tone using a primer, and airbrushed her makeup for a porcelain finish. Usually, Hope avoids eye makeup, so I played up her beautiful, hazel eyes by using matte browns and tans, highlighting her brow line with a champagne light shimmer, and creating drama with a slight smokey effect in brown. To brighten for summer, I used a bright pink/fuchsia lipstick and clear gloss. Taking only 5-10 minutes, Hope’s new look brings her beautiful features to life! BEAUTY
RELAX!
O
ne thing I have learned over the years in the wellness and spa industry is the importance of making time to be still and yes, RELAX! This seems to be an impossible undertaking considering our fast-paced lifestyles, but learning the art of relaxation is a refreshing, rejuvenating and uplifting practice with instant rewards to our mental and spiritual health. Our busy schedules are filled with commitments and our to-do list expands constantly. This pursuit of personal endeavors and family expectations leave us with very little time for ourselves. I often remind and encourage my spa clients and friends to make time to refresh the mind, body and soul with A WELLNESS GETAWAY. Whether it is a facial, massage, walk on the beach or being in solitude, your getaway has a positive effect on your mental and spiritual health. Do it once and you will make this time an essential part of your lifestyle and well-being. Some of my favorite WELLNESS GETAWAYS include time on the beach (skin well-protected of course) reading a book and taking the time to reflect on the ocean’s beauty. Another favorite is turning my bath into a private sanctuary with candles, essential oils and sea salt scrubs along with my favorite music. This summer, I encourage you to create your own WELLNESS GETAWAYS. Yes, even with kids out from school and trying to balance daily chores and obligations – begin with a fresh new attitude towards living and facing each day in total bliss! RELAX, just do it! Laugh and Love,

A. I think most of us are very cautious about how we are
spending our dollars, especially with all the products available. It could get rather expensive going through the trial and error of trying new products. Being in the beauty industry for over 20 years, I have been fortunate to experience some of the most expensive treatments and know that my best skin care routine begins with a great skin cleanser. This basic step ensures that your pores are kept clean and your skin looks healthy and radiant. My second important skin care product is moisturizing cream. Use it to prevent fine lines and those deeper lines called wrinkles that suddenly creep up. Last but not least is your ultimate skin saver: Sun Block Protection with an SPF 50 or above. If you are outdoors for long periods, then consider higher. Remember that money does not buy beautiful skin, but rather understanding how to care for your skin‘s needs keeps your skin healthy and glowing. Listen to your skin – you can’t go wrong!

Beauty Editor Picks for Summer
Summer Hai r Care
O
ur favorite time of year is finally here—summer! With it comes the assault of taxing chlorine compounds, drying sea salt, and damaging sun rays, not to mention all of the havoc we wreak on our hair from styling faux pas.
Sharing Is Caring By Panama D’avila
Chlorine, salt water and the sun all dry, discolor, and damage hair. Chlorine binds to the hair, filling in gaps in the hair shaft. Mineral deposits in salt water make hair brassy and brittle. The sun’s rays fade hair color, makes hair shafts dry and brittle, splits ends. Here are a few summertime tips that will keep damaged, split, brittle hair away. Before entering a pool, lake, ocean, or any body of water, rinse the hair with water and apply a coat of quality conditioner with moisturizing ingredients such as wheat germ, jojoba oil, coconut oil, silk amino acids, etc. This water/conditioner mixture will fill the gaps in the hair shaft and act as a barrier from the chlorinated or salt water and the sun. Follow up with a little club soda; it makes for a good post-swim rinse. 1. Wearing a swim cap or hat as often as possible is highly recommended. Although swim caps are uncomfortable, unattractive, or never stay on, using a cap that securely protects the hair is the best option in protecting hair, but a hat will suffice. 2. Avoid products that contain synthetic oils such as mineral and petrolatum oil, as they further dehydrate the hair. Products that contain drying alcohol, such as hair spray, mousse, and some gels should also be avoided. 3. To protect your hair from sun damage, look for a product that lists SPF levels or sunscreen chemicals such as OctylMethyosycinnamate and OctylMethyoxycinnamateas they offer the best protection for daily and extended sun ray exposure. These SPF products are designed to penetrate the hair cuticle and protect your hair but you may find that you have to pay more for a product with a strong SPF of 8-10. Watch out for products that claim to protect your hair without these chemicals.
Summer is the perfect time to indulge and treat yourself to a fabulous wellness getaway. Listed below are two of my personal choices to relax and rejuvenate.
Morikami Japanese Garden My cup of tea...and right in our backyard. An enchanting and meditative retreat, the first step into the garden is filled with beauty. The tranquil environment is perfect for admiring the scenery while relaxing. My favorite spot is the Bamboo Forest, facing the water, and hearing the magical sounds of the bamboo trees moving. Also, be sure to visit the Koi Fish Pond. You will be amazed as you watch the fish swim – each one with its own beauty. After your meditative stroll, enjoy a delicious lunch by the water at the restaurant.
Bath Houses

Premenstrual Syndrome
BY JULIE PASS, MD
A
s many of us already know, Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) consists of physical and emotional changes five days before menses and the symptoms are relieved within four days of the onset of a woman’s cycle. Mood alterations such as depression, outbursts of anger, irritability, anxiety, confusion, and social withdrawal can occur. Also, PMS includes physical symptoms such as breast tenderness, abdominal bloating, headache, and swelling of the extremities. Approximately 85% of menstruating women experience some of the signs of PMS. A more severe form that significantly affects a woman’s lifestyle is called premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD, which is only seen in about 3-8% of menstruating women. Most women seek treatment after the age of 30. Scientists believe that genetics does play a role in who will experience PMS.
SM
They’d say: You’re not just a mother. You’re an airplane,
Some women who already have other medical or psychological conditions will experience “menstrual magnification” where their symptoms are exacerbated just prior to the cycle. Migraines, irritable bowel disorder, asthma and chronic fatigue syndrome can worsen with the menstrual cycle. Thyroid disease and depression should be ruled out prior to diagnosis of premenstrual syndrome. These conditions are treated differently than PMS and should be evaluate by a doctor. Some women in their mid to late 40’s can experience some of the same symptoms for a different reason. Perimenopause can cause many of the same emotional and physical changes as well as alterations in the menstrual cycle. Thus, it is important to seek professional help correctly diagnose each individual case prior to treatment.
a space shuttle, a vehicle of her limitless imagination. But like any good vehicle, everything needs to run smoothly— especially your legs.
What can be done about this common problem? The first step is to start a symptom diary to keep track of your menses and when you experience the mood swings or physical symptoms. This will help your doctor distinguish any other underlying conditions. Next, try to eat a balanced diet using whole grains, vegetables, and fruit while decreasing salt, alcohol, and caffeine. Extra calcium and increased carbohydrate consumption can sometimes help the mood changes. Aerobic exercise is extremely important to stimulate endorphins and help cope with emotional symptoms as well. If these techniques are not enough to provide a comfortable level of relief, other options available include cognitive behavioral therapy, diuretics, oral contraceptive pills and other methods to suppress ovulation. The most successful treatment to date has been with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI’s). These meds can be used daily or just 2 weeks prior to your period to help with mood stability. Fun and Fitness in the pool The days of playing “Marco Polo” and doing cannonballs may be a distant memory, but you can still get a great workout in the pool. Swimming is an obvious choice and an option many people use all year round in heated pools at health clubs. It’s is an excellent, low-impact, whole-body workout. Warm up by walking the perimeter of the pool, then jogging it. Whether you are alone or swimming with your family start your exercise routine by putting arm floats, noodles or a kickboard under your arms or holding it with your hands and doing flutter kicks while staying afloat. The kicking works the quadriceps and hamstrings and a little bit of the glutes (butt). Then try balancing the floatie on the lower body, either across the hips or between the legs, and work your upper body by doing chest presses, reverse flies, bicep curls and arm circles all while trying to stay afloat. For the finale and muscle endurance, go to the deep end and tread water as long as you can first with just your arms, then just with yours legs, then with both. The water is a fun, convenient place for exercise for all levels but great for beginners due to the low stress to the joints.

Diapers & Discipline BY LISA GOODMAN
During the day, the couple limits phone calls, for the most part to emergencies and saves the day’s updates for dinner time conversation. Should a problem arise, she is the first one he calls. Thinking that they would only have one beautiful child, it was a pleasant surprise when Charley joined the family approximately 20 months ago.
F
or many couples, preparing for the birth of their first child is both an exciting and anxiety-filled time. Between picking out names, registering for gifts and frequent doctor’s appointments, both the mother and father can become emotionally and mentally drained. Add to that a discussion about child care, mounting expenses and maternity leave, and you have a full-fledged breakdown waiting to happen…or not. For Christine and Chris, the decision they made together on how to raise their baby was straight-forward but certainly not typical: Chris became a “Stay-At-Home Dad” for his family. Married for 13 years, it was approximately 7 years ago that the couple made this decision for Chris to stay home – something like a 5-7 year plan. Christine, a CPA with her Master’s degree, is a successful professional with a thriving career managing renewable energy. Her climb up the corporate ladder and her passion for success has driven her to be able to provide well for her family. Even with her long work day, Christine always kisses the kids good night and often will read stories to the kids. Chris joined the Marine Corp, received training and then worked as a Network Engineer. Once retired from engineering, Chris went back to school for graphic design. Raised by a single mom for the first few years, Chris appreciates what his mother was able to accomplish and remembers seeing her work very hard to provide for him. Even though he had no prior experience with babies or children, Chris was eager to begin this adventure and read up on the topic in soon-to-be-parent books. Their daughter Logan, now 6 years old, was born after a rough pregnancy and Christine was home for 6 weeks after the delivery. Chris jumped right in with his responsibilities and an ideal partnership grew. Before going to bed, the couple worked out the plan to alternate feedings so that there would not be resentment the next morning. Christine trusts her husband, does not give him parenting guidance, but rather allows him the freedom to care for the children in his own way. 20 | Fabulous 40rties | Summer 2012
In general, Chris’ days are filled with the usual doctors’ appointments, home work, elementary school participation and after-school activities. He and Charley spend most mornings at the mall and then home for naptime and Logan’s return. Chris requires that Logan do her homework as soon as she gets home from school. First thing in the morning, she is responsible for dressing, washing up, and managing her time to fit in a healthy breakfast. Obviously Chris’ military training has extended to the organization and discipline of the family. In addition to child care, Chris handles all of the cooking and housework including ironing the clothes. He does admit to feeling guilty if there is a pile of laundry on the bed to be folded or the house is untidy when Christine returns home. When it comes to preparing meals, Christine suggests new recipes to try and together they plan the meals ahead. She also was the one making baby food from scratch when the children were infants. As for goals and expectations, the couple discusses what needs to be accomplished each week. Per Chris, his wife appreciates his hard work and they both communicate their mutual gratitude for a job well-done. Although she is a career-driven woman, Christine would easily retire should they win the lottery! And you wonder how a man accepts this tremendous responsibility and deals with teasing from his peers. Well, as Chris puts it, he is perfectly fine with his wife supporting the family. He jokes that he does have extravagant tastes and appreciates that Christine can spoil him like when she bought him his Harley. As for his family, they understand completely and appreciate all that he does. During the weekends, the time is devoted to family activities, sports, church on Sunday and visiting with nearby relatives. Christine loves her University of Florida Gators and rarely misses a game. After the couple had children, Chris recognized the need for a big screen television so they could see around the kids! Both parents make a point to watch the kids when they are together. Even so, when one gets hurt or upset, more
often they go to Chris for comfort. Vacations are totally devoted to family time. No work is allowed. Instead, both Christine and Chris participate, supervise, and enjoy the family-centered vacation. Just like all of us, Chris has his own best practices and methods to avoid in parenting. Raised in a ‘children are seen and not heard’ household, Chris has relaxed this antiquated rule. Instead, he chooses to make sure that the punishment fits the “crime”. He avoids timeouts by incorporating groundings and removal of toys and/or activities. For example, if Logan hurts her brother or lies, she knows that she will have to eventually face the consequences.
obligations, but also respectful of her efforts. In addition to being at home with the kids, Chris makes use of any down-time with his graphic design business. Clients come via word-of-mouth, Facebook, and referrals to have logos designed, printed brochures and posters created, and work on websites. Christine has expectations for her husband’s business to thrive. He enjoys the opportunity to be creative and earn extra income that he plans on using to pay for the children’s education. Once both children are in school and/or daycare, Chris looks forward to expanding his business further.
Active in the community, Chris has volunteered for the Youth Group at church, coached cheerleading for pre-school girls, and As for play dates and interaction with other children, Chris participated in the elementary school PTA. If Christine comes home with work to finish, Chris does feel neglected. He would also be happy to have a few breaks throughout the day, or even some ‘alone time’. Chris prides himself on avoiding bad language around the kids but admits that he has to work on his yelling. “My only goal is to leave legacies for the kids and have both my wife and children proud of me,” Chris says. To entertain the kids, Chris has been known to play Barbies, watch “The Wiggles”, and beat Logan in a few electronic games. He avoids doing art projects because he does not like the mess – his Marine days peeking through? At times, Chris’ daughter Logan does miss her mom’s involvement at school activities when classmates have both parents attending. Of course, Christine feels guilty when she is unable to sneak away from the office or her responsibilities. More often, Logan is not only understanding of her mother’s
“Relationships change and grow over time. Christine and I have a great partnership and grab a romantic date when we can.” Even though he has not read Dr. Spock books, or claims to be a parenting expert, Chris realizes the importance of learning at every age. He works with the children to build a groundwork for learning at home and continually grow the brain. He takes pride in showing them a good role model and providing them with varying degrees of independence. “I’m always teaching,” says Chris. “It’s hard work being a parent that cares!” When asked what he hopes Logan and Charley will remember about this time, Chris has real tears in his eyes. “I hope they are inspired,” he says. “I want them to grow up to be independent, healthy, inspiring humans. I want them to respect me not just for the job I do, but the way I am – work hard, dedicated, committed. If they say ‘I want to be like Dad’, that would be like winning the Academy Award for Parenting!

in our 40’s, a large percentage of us depend Taking care of your family Asonwomen our husband to bring home the bacon as the primary financial contributor. We become accustomed to a certain lifestyle, feeling secure and comfortable without knowing what the future holds. Some of us probably assume that our husbands have taken the initiative in purchasing life insurance in order to ensure the wife and family will be taken care of should he pass away.
As women in our 40’s, we have become better educated in life experiences and business these days, and must also make good decisions. Is the life insurance purchased and is it enough? What happens to our house and its mortgage if my husband passes away? Leaving the household finances to our husbands, some of us are not aware of passwords, bill paying processes, bank account balances, and countless other details. These are all questions we need to be asking ourselves and our husbands today. Our maternal instinct steers us to handle the daily running of the household and taking care of the family. The groceries, children’s activities/sports, cleaning, laundry, cooking, carpools, running errands…and the list goes on. I can help you save time and money. Protecting more of your world with Allstate makes your life easier. And it can put more money in your pocket. Bundle policies for your car, boat, motorcycle, RV and more. Why wait? Call me today.
Insurance agents are trained to ask the questions many couples do not want to face. We strive to make sure that there is enough life insurance on both husband and wife. It is unfortunate to think we may pass on before our children are grown, but if it happens, our husbands need help handling our roles in addition to working full time. Things to consider are child care, housekeeper, babysitter – life will continue and he will need help.

“Wa rn l a b i ng” o l G An Issue That Isn’t Going to Cool Itself Off BY MICHELLE SEWING-SOHN
F
orty is fabulous when discussing age, but is distressful when the current temperature of a state should be in the 40’s, but instead is 70-80 degree F. My family and I went to New Hampshire during Spring Break, thinking we would encounter a cold climate, go skiing and drink hot chocolate to heat up our bodies. But, instead of freezing, we were sweating. Where mountains should have held massive snow, there were only pockets of snow and ice. I thought, “Global warming,” but my children only wondered when the snow would fall. It never did. We have all heard of the term global warming, which sounds awfully like “global warning,” but what is it exactly, what can we do to help, how does it affect our world and us? Al Gore and others have discussed this issue and while it may be “inconvenient” to discuss and to act upon, it cannot be ignored any further. Global warming is an increase in the earth’s average temperature, which has risen about 1 degree F over the past 100 years. A warmer earth can lead to changes in rainfall patterns, and a rise in sea level. Some of the rise in temperature is due to the greenhouse effect. Without the greenhouse effect, the earth would be too cold for humans to live, but if it becomes too strong, the earth could become much warmer than usual, causing problems for humans, plants and animals. The good news is that if we do act, we can change what has occurred. This may sound trite to some readers, but to me it is horrific to think that our children may grow up in a world where they may never actually see a glacier or a certain species of animal. I don’t want them to learn about these things in textbooks or online as I did about dinosaurs. We have lost so much already. We cannot lose anything further and this is an issue that is not going to cool off on its own.
Change a light- use a more energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulb. Drive less- walk, bike, use public transportation and carpool. I know we all have activities with our kids, but if we carpool, we can make a difference! Recycle more- I think we all have good intentions, but we need to think twice before tossing the newspaper in the garbage can and instead place it, and other recyclable items, in our recycle bin. Avoid products with a lot of packaging. Use less hot water and change your thermostat. You can save energy by moving your thermostat down 2 degrees in the winter and 2 degrees in the summer. Plant a tree. Turn off electronic devices when not in use. Support government initiatives aimed at solving global warming. Finally, don’t be discouraged. We have all played a part in creating this problem, and now we can all be partners in finding a solution. Stay informed, locate accurate information and remember, whether you are 4 or 40, you can make a difference. Facts About Global Warming 1. 2000-2009 was the hottest decade on record, with eight of the hottest 10 years having occurred since 2000. 2. The Arctic Climate Impact Assessment has concluded that in the past 50 years, the average temperatures of Alaska, eastern Russia and western Canada have increased as much as 7°F. This rise is almost twice the global average. 3. Extreme weather doesn’t just mean high temperatures. Global warming is causing more intense rainfall and droughts at the same time across the world. 4. Sea levels have risen between 4-8 inches worldwide during the last century, and experts predict they could rise as much 2 feet in the next 100 years. 5. The World Health Organization blames 150,000 deaths per year on the effects of global warming including extreme weather, drought, heat waves, decreased food production and the increased spread of diseases like malaria. 6. At least 279 species of plants and animals are already responding to global warming, migrating north to escape rising temperatures.
Who or what is causing this problem? We need only to look in the mirror. Human activities, such as burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gases, are most likely the reason. No, we won’t be forty something when global warming may become an insurmountable issue to deal with, but by acting in our 40’s, we can ensure that there will be people in their fabulous forties later on who will enjoy a healthy planet, animals and plant species. I moved to Florida from New York for warmer weather, but “since the 1970’s, the U.S. Southeast has warmed about 2 degrees F. Florida is expected to be one of the hardest hit in the region.” If emissions don’t change, the number of 90 degree F days will rise and while in 1960 and 70s there were 60 such hot days, by the end of the century, the number is expected to reach 165! I wanted to live in a mild climate, not melt in it. Here are suggestions for thwarting global warming:

greener home… Use Recycled Paper Products (Unbleached or Naturally Bleached) Every year, more than 900 million trees are cut down for U.S. paper and pulp mills. More than 40% of landfill is paper office and residential paper dominates it. What’s more, the bleach used on most paper products has toxic chlorine-based chemicals that destroy the ecosystem, cause cancer and birth defects. Purify Air with Houseplants
pounds that are directly linked to cancer, reproductive disorders, lung and skin damage, and other serious health concerns. Kids are especially vulnerable. Cleaning chemicals are a major contributor to indoor air pollution -- and keep in mind that inside the house is where the average family spends 90% of its time. Use Energy Efficient Light Bulbs Did you know that 90% of electricity is lost by heat in incandescent (regular) bulbs. Energy-efficient bulbs produce the same amount of light using about 25% of the energy. There are even light bulbs that last 20,000 hours that’s 5 hours a day for 11 years. Just one of them will replace 26 store-bought light bulbs. Choose Natural Lawn Care and Stop Using Pesticides and Synthetic Fertilizers Pesticides are intentionally toxic. Our shoes track these toxins into our homes and our children’s health is the most compromised. Exposure to pesticides can lead to such health problems as birth defects, neurotoxins, and kidney and liver damage.
The EPA estimates indoor air to be two to 10 times more polluted than the air outdoors. Building materials, furnishings, carpet backing, cleaning products, computer circuitry and printers continuously release pollutants. Plants are not only nice to look at; they are also great, natural air purifiers.
Synthetic fertilizers may seem like a quick fix to green a lawn but they actually weaken grass and deteriorate soil in the long run. Healthy soil is what grows nice grass. Try adding clover seed or other nitrogen-fixing plant seed to grass seed to improve the soil and/or opt for natural and organic fertilizers.
