ummer has ended and we welcome the fall season. Fall brings rejuvenation with the changes in weather and colors. South Florida also gets a renewed energy as we welcome back our seasonal residents and tourists to some of the most beautiful spots in all of the US. With that renewed energy comes renewed opportunity. Now is the time to reinvigorate your mind and body, and take another step towards those goals. The story of Lisa Killean is an inspiring reminder that it is never too late to take action. The year is coming to an end and sometimes our resolutions are but a memory, but the fall is a great season to make a final run at your goals. Take positive action for your health, and take positive action for your happiness. The fall season also brings us a time of thanks. Thanksgiving allows us time with family and friends to get together for no other reason than to just be thankful. No pressure of the perfect gift, and the work party invite list or dress. Just a time to reflect and thank each other for being who they are. We also take time to thank the veteran spouses, which many times go without the honors they themselves deserve. Melanie Casey describes her extremely important role as the “seasoned spouse”, which reminds us that they have a positive affect on both the family and the missions in which their spouses are involved. Many times they are the “unsung heroes” to us who thank our soldiers for our freedoms, but rarely considered “unsung heroes” to their own families and spouses. As Fabulous 40rties enters its third year, we remain thankful to you, our readers. We continue to welcome your feedback and comments, and enjoy every interaction we have in the community. We are invigorated this fall season, and we are thankful to each other and you for allowing us to continue to be FABULOUS.

Vegetables, Fruit and Farming - It’s All in the Family One of Palm Beach County’s original family farms, Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market is a one-of-a-kind country store, green market, u-pick, and shopping experience for all South Florida residents and Florida visitors alike. The market is stocked with just-picked produce, fruits and hardto-find vegetables, Bedner’s private label pickled vegetables and salad dressings for that extra flavor, fresh-baked bread, organic specialty items, honey in addition to over 150 other items for your enjoyment. Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market also hosts school tours where kids get to visit the fields and see a real farm at work, tours for retirement groups and hosts events through out the year such as Doggie Day, Pumpkin Patch, Easter Egg Hunt, visit with Santa, Valentines Day where you and your kids can participate in all the fun. A completely refreshing way to shop, Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market is the place to stop. We are truly a family farm. A real family making a living on a real farm. In the early 1950’s, newly wedded Arthur Bedner relocated from Pennsylvania with his new bride to follow his dream of farming in South Florida. After years of perfecting his growing techniques, Art established Bedner Farm in 1960 in Palm Beach County, where it continues to thrive today, yielding vast crops of cucumbers and peppers that are primarily sold and distributed along the east coast of the United States as well as keeping the Market freshly stocked. Art’s great passion for farming was instilled in his children and grandchildren. His three sons, Charlie, Bruce and Steve, along with his grandson Jesse, continue to carry on Art’s legacy for farming. Their wives and children have turned the Market into a familyoriented shopping experience. Many farmers in South Florida ship their produce throughout the U.S. leaving the local consumer shopping at grocery stores paying higher prices for poor quality imported food from other states or from foreign countries. At Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market, while decreasing the amount of food transported abroad to stock our own Market during the growing season, we want families to come and learn more about fresh, healthy, nutritious food grown locally on our farm. Things have changed quite a bit since Arthur Bedner started farming in 1950. In some ways, though, the key things remain the same: quality produce, good market prices and family members who love the business. The Bedner’s are hands-on farmers that are dedicated to producing the freshest and highest level of quality produce available and delivering it to you, their valued customers.

Spouses are veterans, too BY MELANIE CASEY

M

ost of us hear about the hardships that Soldiers go through when they are deployed – constant danger, uncomfortable living conditions, lack of communication and, of course, separation from family. But the spouses and families left behind also suffer from hardships. As an Army wife for more than 24 years (what the military likes to call a “seasoned spouse”), I have spent my fair share of time stoking the home fire while my husband, a career Special Operations Forces (SOF) Soldier, has been off training or fighting. I married at 19 in 1988, well before the War on Terror reared its ugly and unpredictable head. The Army – the country – was a different place then. Focus was on training and preparing; there wasn’t a constant threat of danger like there is today. Moreover, when the guys were off in the field, there was no communication what so ever – no text messages, no e-mail, no status updates on Facebook. Nothing. We wives left behind truly were on our own.

doing it as recently as last year when my husband was deployed to Iraq. The reason is simple – we don’t want our husbands distracted by our fears while they should be focused 100 percent on the task at hand. That focus can be the difference, literally, between life and death. So our fears and worries, despite how real and difficult they may be to us, must be kept to ourselves. We mollify ourselves with the knowledge that our husbands are well trained and prepared for battle, and we are well trained and prepared for the rest. Over the years, in keeping with this idea, I developed a motto of “there is no bad news from the homefront.” So while my husband was off training in Africa, or deployed to Bosnia, Afghanistan, Iraq or wherever, he never got bad news. This meant I had to handle many things by myself. This was easy when the kids (now 22, 18 and 7) were little, but as they got older, it became more of a challenge. I had to make many, many parenting decisions by myself. And the kids had to be satisfied knowing that daddy, wherever he was, loved them.

I spent my first two years as a Ranger’s wife – what some say is “The Toughest Job in the Army.” There were no Family Readiness Groups or support systems in those days where you could seek advice and find help. We kind of made it up as we went along. We had a phone tree, however, and were a tight-knit group of ladies who looked out for each other. My first experience with combat occurred in December, 1989 when I was seven months pregnant with my first child. Following a unit Christmas party (and quite unexpectedly, I should add) the battalion my husband was assigned to was put on alert for what we would later learn was the invasion of Panama. We raced home from the party, my husband giddy with excitement at the prospect of going to war. I, of course, felt a little differently, but kept my fears to myself. This is one trait I think most Army wives – for sure most SOF wives – develop and master early on, and I was still

For most women, family comes first. For SOF Soldiers, it’s all about the mission. They spend years training, preparing and waiting for a chance to put their skills to use. During the Invasion of Panama, we said it was like a football team that had practiced for many years and was finally able to play the game. That’s not to say that these Soldiers don’t love their children. They certainly do. But when we take on the role of Army wife, it’s kind of understood that they have their role, and we have ours -- “toughest job in the Army.”

We have all been there before with our kids asking ourselves “why did they do that? How could they act that way or what could they possibly be thinking?” We as parents want to teach our kids right from wrong, to be respectful of others, honesty and integrity. It would be great if they learned all of this in school or at home but the truth is they don’t. Believe it or not, the one thing that can teach this to our kids is the game of golf. In the official rules of the sport it actually uses the words etiquette, courtesy, honor and respect. I don’t know any other rules of a sport that does that…do you? When your child gets involved in golf it’s a whole new world involving nature and all its living things, interacting with people of all ages and ethnic backgrounds and teaching kids to respect other people and the game. It lets a child learn at their own pace and gives them the self confidence to interact with others and have fun doing it. Golf will be something your child will take with them their whole life. They will use it in business, to enjoy friendships and to compete with Mom and Dad for many years to come. Please give your son or daughter the chance to experience one of the greatest games ever invented that teaches all of us so much…GOLF!

KIDS’ CORNER

for College Graduates BY MICHELLE LEWIS

Time to breathe a collective sigh of relief, collegiate—even with all those student loan payments, getting your college degree really is worth it in today’s economy. According to an MSNBC report, the unemployment rate for college graduates fell in May from 4 percent to 3.9 percent, while the unemployment rate for people with just a high school degree increased from 7.9 percent to 8.1 percent. That means American college graduates are now more than twice as likely to find a job as Americans who only graduated from high school. Unraveling a Medical Myster y BY LISA MARIE KILLEAN

C

oming out of an abusive marriage prepared me to be strong and handle each hurdle as best I could. As a 43-year-old mother of 7 aged 15 to 25, I worked a lot and barely had any time for myself, not to mention looking for a soul mate. Never in a million years would I have thought ‘Prince Charming’ would sweep me and my kids off our feet, but it happened. For 15 years, my husband, Patrick and I have been together, married for 13. To our marriage, he brought a son to add to my 2 boys and 4 daughters. They all got along making the blending of our families much easier.

During the next year, extremely overweight, overworked, and constantly exhausted, the doctors diagnosed me with hypothyroidism, thyroid nodules, and rheumatoid arthritis. I was placed on extremely strong medication that gave vicious nightmares. My weight and health were both becoming worse, not better. Over time, I developed severe fatigue, migraines, massive weight gain, depression, bloat, and pain. A year later, I was taking a lot of medication. Nothing seemed to help but I was convinced that I had to take it. As I was losing faith, I developed pain in my upper right side. Apparently my gall bladder was working at 20% and needed to be removed. While recovering, I still had pain and was told that these were “Phantom Pains” that would pass in time. Needless to say, the pain continued and I accepted them. My depression worsened and I resorted to cooking those feel-good comfort foods again for the family. My weight blossomed to an all-time high of 269 pounds. My aches and pains, especially in my feet, increased. Our orthopedic surgeon suggested that I have a new physician take a fresh look at my ailments. He referred me to Dr. Lisa Rankin who he met in medical school and highly recommended.

It is true – a happy marriage puts on some weight. Pat and the kids always loved my cooking and I started “setting the mood” by cooking big, loving meals. Everything was filled with fat – fried, creamy, cheesy, or chocolaty. Big comfort meals put everyone in a good mood and I relished my role. This is where the problem began. In 2006, my husband had a stint put in his artery. We both were smokers and heavy eaters so this was supposed to be a wake-up call. I avoided doctors because they would directly relate everything to my smoking, but I was not ready to quit. When the doctor gave me the report from my husband’s surgery, he informed me that Pat had to quit smoking, not be around anyone that smoked or he would die. This scared me and I set a date two weeks later to quit. This was really tough to do because Pat was still smoking. As weeks passed, I started getting sick…..very sick. At the end of 2006, I went to the ENT doctor for a cold/sore throat that would not go away. I returned home with a new ailment – diabetes. Now on medication, I did not watch my diet and gained more weight. I figured the pill should regulate my diabetes, why bother?

After more abdominal pain, misdiagnosis, and added work stress, I was relieved when my Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) physician diagnosed Pancreatitis. At this point, I had visited many doctors including Dr. Rankin and was taking a medicine cabinet full of pills – medication for diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia, nerve damage, digestive system assistance, 3 pills for RA and a weekly shot, vitamins to counteract the side effects of the RA medicine, antacids, and a sleep aid. Scheduling all of the pills, an exhausting hour commute each way to work and gaining weight landed me in the hospital with a variety of ailments, diagnoses and life-threatening scares. The final blow was when I was told that my adrenal system was shutting down.

After more specialists, hospitals and unsuccessful surgeries, I made an appointment with Dr. Rankin. Even though I had no faith in doctors by this point, life took a turn. Dr. Rankin sent me for therapy and began chipping away at my symptoms. First, I stopped taking all medication except the thyroid pill, so that Dr. Rankin would have clean blood for testing. Next, she sent me to see a chiropractor and therapist. I visited Dr. Marty, the chiropractor, 3 times a week for adjustments and massage therapy while Dr. Rankin studied the blood tests. To control the RA, I was to avoid nightshade vegetables and take Tumeric. Diane, the therapist in Dr. Rankin’s practice, was a wealth of information. She helped sort out problems with Dr. Rankin’s guidance and share the course of action. My trust in the medical profession was improving! Dr. Rankin discovered that I had several food sensitivities so I began eating fruit, salad, chicken, turkey, and seafood rather than comfort foods filled with sugar, salt and fat. The weight started coming off while the pain diminished and energy increased. Unbelievably, my RA flare-ups were practically gone. I no longer needed all the medication aside from the thyroid pill. Dr. Rankin practices medicine by discovering the root cause of an ailment rather than track patients’ symptoms. She has always been very patient and made me feel like I was her only patient. Her advice included adding supplements, why I need them, and what they would help. Dr. Rankin listened to me, educated me, and saved me! Now I have gone from a size 18-20 to an 8-10, and weigh 175 pounds. I am no longer diabetic nor had any RA flare-ups. At my check-ups, I am proud of my progress and appreciate Dr. Rankin and her staff for their support and encouragement. When I smile now, it is real. I have a positive attitude and try to encourage and motivate others. My relationship with my husband has improved as he now sees a strong, determined woman ready to live life. While I continue to live a healthier lifestyle, I added in working out with my best friend Laura. Together we try different machines, increase our endurance, and work hard at burning fat and toning our muscles. Our secret to making exercise easier is when we share our day, the family, or plan our weekends and holidays. We spend a lot of time together, eating healthy, and leaning on each other for encouragement and motivation. Dr. Rankin is now the only doctor I see as well as my entire family. She taught me that the road to health is a marathon – not a sprint. Results take time but as long as you trust in what she tells you and follow her recommendations, the healthy outcome will be worthwhile!

Why do we get the

chills?

When you shiver, it is your body’s way of warming itself up. The repetitive oscillations of your muscles give off heat which raises the body’s core temperature. When you have a fever, it is because your body is using the heat to kill off the invading organisms. When it needs a little more help getting the core temperature up, it signals the body to begin shivering to raise the temperature even more.

Need some sleep?

We are a sleep-deprived nation! Are you one of the 70 million Americans that find it difficult to get a good night sleep? Here are some helpful suggestions to overcome those sleepless nights: • Eat a high-protein snack several hours before bed. This can provide the L-tryptophan needed for your melatonin and serotonin production. • Eat hot oatmeal before bed. While most people think of oatmeal as a breakfast food, it does work well in the evening due to the fact that the carbohydrates cause a serotonin release in the body. • Avoid before-bed snacks, particularly sugars. These will raise your blood sugar and delay sleep. Later, when blood sugar drops too low, you may wake up and be unable to fall back asleep. • Wear socks to bed. Having cold feet upsets the release of melatonin, a hormone related to a proper sleepwake cycle. • Drink Herbal Tea. Certain herbal teas can help you relax and fall asleep. Chamomile or Elderberry Flowers are popular herbs that slow the nervous system and promote relaxation.

See our ad on page 13.

• Use Lavender Oil. Place a few drops of lavender oil on the pulse points of your wrist and forehead before you go to bed-it has a soothing and calming effect

Fitness or exercise

is not defined by a gym membership alone.

Tae Kwon Do... It’s not just for kids! Two major benefits of Tae Kwon Do include an increase in your personal fitness level and in physical strength. Those everyday tasks that were sometimes difficult will become much easier as your muscles from top to toe become stronger. This does not mean you will grow big, bulky muscles. What it does mean is that you will develop a stronger, leaner body. These stronger muscles support our body and strengthen our bones, which is important for women as we age to help fight osteoporosis. Strong core muscles support our spine, and strong foot muscles help to keep good posture.

Working out at a gym or lifting weights does not automatically guarantee a healthy body, although strength training is important for women as we get older. It is about finding something you truly enjoy doing and use it as a form of exercise. Choose from many options like power walking, tennis, golf, basketball, Pilates, yoga, dance, martial arts, swimming, biking or jumping rope. To be successful at maintaining a healthy exercise program, you must find what you truly enjoy doing so it does not seem like a chore. Think outside the box and try something new or something you have always wanted to try!

(November 1, 2012 – October 31, 2013)

$429.00 + tax

Another great thing about Tae Kwon Do for women is that you tone your muscles surrounding your hips, thighs, and lower abdomen when you kick, making them stronger and leaner. In addition to the strength you will have from your increased lean muscle, you may find it easier to maintain a healthy body weight, which we all know becomes more difficult as we approach the pre- and menopausal years. Tae Kwon Do training also includes stretching, which increases flexibility. Keeping our bodies supple and limber can prevent injuries as we get older. While all the physical aspects of Tae Kwon Do are important, so are the mental ones. After a tiring or stressful day, a training session of kicking and punching a bag truly becomes a great stress reliever. As you battle through a training session and push yourself to new limits, you leave feeling invigorated, empowered, confident, mentally strong, and ready to take on the world! Give Tae Kwon Do a try today for your mind and your body!

Why

Where you buy your shampoo matters

Consumers who buy professional hair care products at grocery and drug stores are not getting the bargains they may think. Not only are the products not cheaper, they may be old, contaminated and may not be the real thing. A counterfeiting case involving customs and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials discovered products containing high levels of bacteria fueling a grey-market industry that deals in counterfeit, stolen, or outdated merchandise. Diverted products can be diluted formulas, or old, expired formulas that may not be safe to use. Contaminated or counterfeit products could cause irritation and even hairloss and infection. The message is, “If you want to be guaranteed that you’re purchasing a quality, professional product, purchase one at a salon from a professional hairdresser.

eeking a divorce and stressed out over any of these issues: 1. Going to Court? 2. The cost of litigation, if there is an attorney? 3. What are all the financial assets? 4. W hat is going to be decided about custody for my children? Penny M. Martin, Esq., says there is a less stressful transition for everyone involved. Practicing child advocacy, family and probate law for 17 years, Ms. Martin is a member of the Collaborative Divorce Team in Palm Beach County. 3 F’s OF BEING GREEN

(Frugal, Fun & Fabulous)

Adding It Up BY KIM BOWMAN, THE FOOD INVESTIGATOR What most people think when I tell them they should be eating food that is at least 90% organic is, “I would, but it is too expensive!” The truth is it costs you more if you are not eating organic. How do I know? I traveled that road myself to discover why organic food is a better value overall. *Healthy organic foods are grown and raised in nutrientdense fields with nutrient-dense soils, irrigated with water – not raw sewage, and are not loaded with chemicals, toxins, hormones, antibiotics or GMO’s. This equates to food that is toxicfree and nutrient-dense. To put it simply, one organic apple, although seemingly more per pound, actually costs less per nutrient! So this one nutrient-dense organic apple equals approximately 2 nutrient-deficient conventional apples less all the toxins. With this being said, you can eat one whole conventional apple or ½ of an organic apple, so how much did you really pay? Since I have been eating organic, my food bill has remained within the same range it was prior to eating organic, since my body requires less food because I am eating nutrient-dense foods. I also lost weight, feel great, and do not have to worry about gaining weight ever again. *Special Note: We would like to state that healthy organic foods do not equate to organic sugar laden foods. Simple sugars do not provide nutrients nor are a necessity to fuel the human body, and cause more harm than good.

Did you know? Those stickers on fruits and veggies tell you quite a bit! 4 numbers mean they were conventionally grown. 5 numbers starting with number 8 means they are genetically modified (GMO). And 5 numbers starting with 9 means they were organically grown.

Fun, Frugal and Fabulous ways of using an empty Oatmeal container:

Cover with decorated paper and fill with homemade cookies to give as presents. You can even make homemade dog cookies and give to friends with dogs. Old candles that can be used for various projects later, yarn, ribbon and other projects ‘stuff ’. Make sure you label the container on the outside for quick and easy identification. Mailing Cookies to family, friends or military service people. Perfect size for holding two rolls of toilet paper. You can decorate them in wall paper or wrapping paper to match your bathroom décor. Making a time capsule for each of your children but you just can’t bury it as it will decompose. Each child can decorate the outside of their own capsule and fill it with stuff related to their birthday.

Endless Chukkers BY ALEX WEBBE

The sport of polo is a unique sport in that it combines the athleticism of horse and rider, danger and cunning in the fastest team sport in the world. Although horsemanship as a key ingredient to any aspiring player, one must also develop a sense of team play, strategy and be able to hone hand-eye coordination to a level where you can swing a 52 inch bamboo mallet from a galloping horse at 30 miles an hour and hit a bouncing white hard plastic ball through an opponent’s goal posts for a score. As one of only two women to play at the highest level in the country, Melissa Ganzi not only competes, but excels.

“I will always be grateful to them for the opportunity”

Melissa began riding at the age of six, and in the course of her early equestrian career participated in dressage, show jumping and cross country competition. “I started playing polo because of my father-in-law, Wally Ganzi, who was a polo player,” she offers. About a dozen years ago he gave me a polo pony for my birthday, and that was the beginning of my love affair with the game.” In 2001 Melissa became the first woman to play on a winning Monty Waterbury Cup team at the Saratoga Polo Club (NY), and her path was charted. Upon her return to Florida she continued to develop her game under the watchful eyes of polo veterans Joey Casey and Juan Bollini at Boca Raton’s Royal Palm Polo Club. Husband Marc had already joined the horse and mallet set,

24 | Fabulous 40rties | Fall 2012

and with Melissa’s newfound interest, their investment in the game continued to grow. “I was fortunate enough to be able to fill in for Wink Hartman on his Hartmoor Farm team at the Royal Palm Polo Club in Boca Raton one year. The following season I was able to take the place of club owner Jack Oxley on his team,” she said. “It was a great way to learn how to play at the higher level, and I will always be grateful to them for the opportunity.” Her superb horsemanship has allowed her to compete on a par with some of the game’s best. Her mallet work improved to the point where she was a constant scoring threat at the front end of the lineup and her polo campaign continued. Trips to Santa Barbara and Calgary resulted in increasing success, and her commitment to the game continued to grow.

The purchase of two regulation polo fields behind the Ganzi home in Wellington were converted into their Grand Champions Polo Club, as extended spring and fall play was developed to keep the polo ball in motion locally for another three months each year. Grand Champions drew on its many polo playing year-round Wellington residents and formed a series of tournaments that allowed for a casually paced approach to the game. As the years rolled on, the competition continued to escalate. “Grand Champions was organized for us to get together to have some fun playing with friends and neighbors.” Melissa said. “There is plenty of times for hotly contested, Photo by NAVID. high-goal tournament play,” added Melissa, but when we get together in the spring and fall it’s a time to have fun playing with your friends.” The list of friends included some of the games better players with Luis Escobar, Tommy Biddle, Hector Galindo and Nicolas Roldan saddling up for action in Grand Champions tournament play. The club’s regular cast of characters included 6-goalers Kris Kampsen, Brandon Phillips and Juan Bollini. Under the direction of club co-managers Joey Casey and Juan Bollini, the level of competitiveness ratcheted up, and the level of competition increased. From medium goal club polo in the spring and fall, the club matured to a level where it was staging regular United States Polo Association tournaments in the 12-16-goal range, finally graduating to the point where they landed the highly prized National Twenty-Goal Tournament and the 20-goal North American Cup. Grand Champions’ reputation continued to grow, and it was now organizing everything from loosely organized medium goal tournaments to international competitions that allowed foreign players to arrive sans horses and find themselves playing on some of the world’s top polo fields. Visiting players from Austria to Australia trekked their way to the fields of the Grand Champions Polo Club where they are outfitted with horses, grooms and a team with the least amount of effort. And through the process of the growth of the club, Melissa’s game continued to improve. Playing polo every day of the week was routine, and her affinity for the horses caused the Ganzi stables to explode. Marc and Melissa eventually found themselves competing in national tournament play at the neighboring International Polo Club, and with each of them fielding a team, more horses were in order.

Following 20-goal play, the commitment was made to compete in the United States Open Championship, with Melissa leading an Audi team onto the field in Open competition in 2008, joining Bendabout’s Gillian Johnston as the only other woman patron on the field. The Ganzi’s continued to compete at the highest level of play in the country again for the next four years, with Marc leading an Audi team to a US Open and C. V. Whitney Cup wins in 2009 and a USPA Gold Cup championship in 2011. In 2012 Melissa’s Piaget team captured 26-goal wins in the Hall of Fame Cup and the Butler Handicap adding silver to an already impressive trove of trophies that include three Aspen Snow Polo Championships; three Miami Beach Polo World Cup titles; high-goal patrons in the sport of polo. Her list of championships include the 2012 Hall of Fame Cup at the International Polo Club; Santa Barbara Polo Club’s 2009 Bill Triller 20-goal; 2007 Western Badge and Trophy 20-goal; 2008 Mayors Cup (all at Santa Barbara); the 2009 WCT Championship in Wellington, FL; the 2008 and 2009 Miami Beach Polo World Cup; the Aspen Snow Polo Championship in 2005, 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011; the North America Cup in 2009 and the Monty Waterbury Cup (2001). Additional polo campaigns have taken her to Argentina, Uruguay and England. Currently ranked as the #1 female polo player in the world by the Casablanca World Polo Tour, Melissa also took part in a historic moment in the game November 6, 2010 when she and several other players set a world record for the most consecutive chukkers played, playing 30 chukkers in a benefit match for the Wounded Warriors project in Aiken, South Carolina. Polo is a family sport for Melissa, playing with and against husband Marc in both high-goal and medium goal play. Son Grant and daughter Riley are hooked on the sport as well, and can be found at the forefront of youth polo events throughout the year. The family club, Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington, Florida, serves as both the training facility for the Ganzis teams, but as frequent tournament venues for all levels of play which include spring and fall seasons that attract both locals and visiting players from around the world. Melissa’s dedication to the sport manifests itself in many forms from sponsorship of youth polo events, and charitable functions like Best Photo by David Lominska. Buddies to her support of the Museum of Polo, where she serves as Vice President and is actively helping to raise money for a much anticipated addition. Melissa was an instrumental part in bringing the Westchester Cup international competition to the United States in 2009 (she offered over 30 horses for the British team to use) and continues to support the WCT and the women’s polo movement. Year-round play by Melissa Ganzi results in her endless chukkers.

Wellington - August 8/27/12 Flooding from Isaac.

Flooding occurs in moderate-to-low risk areas in addition to highrisk areas. Poor drainage systems, rapid accumulation of rainfall, over flowed lakes, and broken water mains can all result in flood. Structures located in high-risk flood areas have a significant chance of suffering flood damage and are required by the law to carry flood insurance as a condition of receiving a mortgage from a federally regulated or insured lender. Madness! Debbie Harris is a business entrepreneur and stayat-home mom. Originally from New Jersey, she lives in Lake Worth with her husband Chris and three children Kailey, Abbey and Christopher. Aged 41, she enjoys spending time with her family, and cooking. In 2005, she helped launch a successful soccer blog. And this summer, she’s excited about her newest business venture — Best French Fries — a food truck specializing in delicious french fries served with tasty dipping sauces.

Makeup Before

After

Debbie had a beautiful slightly pink complexion with stunning green eyes. Her skin tone was evened out using a very slight yellow tinted moisturizer. Tinted moisturizer complements a busy lifestyle by combining the two steps of adding moisturizer and then foundation. Eric focused dark eggplant eyeliner around her eyes to enhance the green color. Lavender browns also create depth and drama to create a sexy eye. Eric recommends staying away from frosty eye colors as they can be aging and add to a crepey look, not flattering around the eye. He gave Debbie’s lips a wash of pink with blue undertones to keep her teeth looking bright and white.

Hair color and Cut:

Debbie came in with three colors of hair growing out. An ash brown base with ten percent grey, a coppery orange in the mid shaft and an ashy gold blonde on her ends. She has a great wavy, natural texture, and her hair is fine but fairly dense. Michael wanted to complement her skin’s warmth by cooling off her color a bit. He loved the idea of rich reds and browns to complement her green eyes, but the brassy, orange tones were contributing too much warmth. Making her a cooler, richer, dimensional brunette allows her complexion to glow. Gigi identified her slightly longer than oval face lent itself well to a sophisticated, long, layered bob shape. Debbie can enjoy a smooth, sleek look or try using some curl product such as Curls Rock by Tigi to enhance her natural texture and enjoy some springy curls! SEX It Matters In Your

Relationship and Your Conversations 1. Stuff a love note in their wallet or tuck it under a windshield wiper.

2. Change the desktop wallpaper to a cute photo of you two on your spouse’s home computer.

3. Burn a CD with tunes from your dating days and include your first dance or fave song.

4. Look up the date of the next full moon and celebrate with a champagne toast.

5. Hate basketball, but your main squeeze is addicted?

Despise musicals, but your partner can’t get enough? Suck it up and get tickets -- the reward will be worth it.

6. Forget breakfast in bed. Have dinner in bed (and don’t worry about the crumbs).

7. Go to bed early. No books, no BlackBerry, no remote. Note that we didn’t say sleep.

8. Create a cocktail together and name it after yourselves. 9. Go to a bookstore or music store together, then split

up. Your mission: Buy something you know they’ll love. Then wrap and exchange.

10. Spend a weekend apart (substitute your best pal, sister, or old college roommate) and plan to meet back at your place after 48 hours. Absence is an aphrodisiac.

The opposite sex

and their pesky habits

The most annoying and common habits of our men: • Dirty clothes on the floor IN FRONT OF THE HAMPER!!!! • Empty toilet paper rolls in bathroom - never replaces them • Leaving cups and shoes in the living room when he goes to bed • Little piles of nail clippings that can’t seem to find their way to the trash • Dirty clothes on the bathroom floor • Hogging the remote • Turning a light on in every room of the house • Turning a TV on in xevery room so he does not miss 1 second of ESPN or a game, it’s even on the radio when you get in his car!!!

W

hat do you do when your partner wants to have more sex than you enjoy having? The gender here is reversible so this could apply to either female or male. I’ll use the example of a woman not wishing to make love with her partner as often as he desires to make love with her. Where is it written that everyone has the same passion quotient? Some like it more, some like it less. That does not mean you don’t love one another. Everyone has a different sexual appetite somewhere along the vast sexual continuum. Sexual desire also changes with the seasons of your life, life circumstances, life experience, or mood . Many variables such as stress or fatigue or yes, a headache can also alter ones desire or draw your husband’s interest in any sexual way. Remember that sex is only one part of a healthy, mature, love relationship. Your love is balanced and fulfilled by so many other aspects of your life together that also comprise the whole of your commitment. It is certainly a valuable and healthy part of your marriage, and requires your effort, interest, and attention throughout the duration of your marriage. The two of you may want to talk about where it is on your list of priorities. Here are a few tips: 1) Talk about your sexual relationship with your partner. Many people don’t. Big Mistake. Let him know that if you don’t want to have sex as often as he does that it does not mean you don’t love him. 2) Be kind and loving, gentle and supportive during your talk about sex. This is the most vulnerable, most intimate topic in the world. You can create a great deal of damage if you are not delicate. 3) Be affectionate often, without intending to be sexual. Discuss this with your mate so you can feel free to be close without the concern that it will always lead to a sexual encounter. This way your moves will not be misinterpreted. 4) Have fun together. Laugh, go places, do things, new things inside and outside the bedroom. Don’t let the relationship get boring, stale and routine. Outside the bedroom try a new restaurant with ambiance, take a walk along the beach together holding hands, or use your imagination to plan something different. At home, romantic music still sets the mood, make love in different rooms or try different sexual positions to keep your love life alluring. You can modify how you feel about your love life. It all starts in your head. You can transform, shift, or grow if you chose to. Counseling can help. Loving one another and making love with the one you love are such beautiful and worthwhile reasons for living. Don’t miss out. I’ve tried everything and I still can’t lose weight! The Link between toxins and weight loss

Many people who cannot lose weight are actually Leptin-Resistant! Those suffering from being overweight and obese have a HORMONE called LEPTIN that is significantly elevated. Similar to those with Type II Diabetes where the body is unable to hear the message from the hormone Insulin and therefore Insulin continues to rise in the effort to get its message across which leads to many life threatening illnesses as well as premature aging. The same holds true for Leptin. As Leptin continues to rise unchecked due to a toxic fat cell, the receptors that hear Leptin burn out; therefore the brain cannot hear its message. Because Leptin is the hormone that tells your brain to burn your fat stored for energy, if your brain cannot hear its message then it will be impossible to lose weight despite your typical diet and the amount of exercise you are doing. Nonetheless, there is hope. We work with making the necessary diet and lifestyle changes to assist your body in healing the Leptin hormone receptors making the fat-burning mechanism a reality again. This is when your body not only repairs the hormone receptors but can begin to successfully lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. After addressing Leptin, one problem potentially remains… Toxicity. Toxicity affects this hormone cascade by causing cellular interference and hormone disruption which not only causes the inability to lose weight, but many diseases and bizarre conditions as well. These can include chronic fatigue, Fibromyalgia, premature aging, chronic allergies, ADHD, headaches, sinusitis, estrogen dominance, osteoporosis, psoriasis, chronic digestive disturbances such as IBS, acid reflux, etc. Many of you have questions regarding testing for toxicity and what can be done to detox for correction of these problems and more. First of all, I must point out that true detox begins at the cellular level and the general colon cleanses and liver flushes that are purchased at health food stores will not work to cleanse the body of the bioaccumulation of today’s onslaught.

32 | Fabulous 40rties | Fall 2012

Secondly, to accomplish true detoxification we must know what it is we are trying to get rid of. For example, we detox heavy metals such as lead and mercury completely differently than biotoxins produced from living things such as molds, Lyme disease, candida, etc. When a patient enters our Wellness Center and it is determined that toxicity is an issue we start with a neurotoxic evaluation designed to provide us with information as to what toxins are of issue. We then perform something called a Visual Contrast Sensitivity Test (VCS). This test is an extremely accurate evaluation for biotoxic illness. It has less than 1% false positive readings. Depending on these results, we may move into laboratory testing. If heavy metals seem to be an issue, we perform a urine test utilizing a challenge agent to pull the metals from the tissues of the body. It is important to note that performing blood tests and urine tests without a challenging agent is very inaccurate because the heavy metals are bound so tightly within the body. Heavy metal detox is an area that I see most practitioners doing more harm than good because of their lack of understanding of true cellular detoxification. Depending upon the individual, we may also do very specific testing to measure other hormones and enzymes that are affected by each particular toxin. With this degree of specificity we can accurately target what we are attempting to purge from the body. As mentioned above, this is extremely important because the method of detox is very unique to each type of toxin. As you can see, there are many pieces of the puzzle to address when it comes to achieving true health. The first place to start is looking back at the root cause. When you can uncover the root cause and remove this interference, you will be amazed at how much your body can actually accomplish on the journey to optimal health.
