Now is Just the Projection of an Extraordinary Little Girl

By Barbara Schober (Nina’s Mom) I remember pigtails flying as Nina rode around the Circle without the training wheels for the first time. She was determined to do just that on a cool summer day.

As usual, all the Kids on the Circle cheered for her. Friends knew they could rely on her to make big dreams come true. Just like the time she was the fearless leader to have all of them partake in a Circus right in the middle of that same Circle park. Who else could organize each and every kid the small, big, nerdy and even the bit-of-a-bully kid to partake in the Circus? Her sensitivity was so endearing as she found something each kid could do and then make them feel very important. Her creativity to make up acts, costumes and even refreshments was a great success for all the neighbors to enjoy.

Her friends knew she was loyal and dependable. Girl Scouts proved those traits to be very important. A trip on a train to Savannah proved Nina to be most loyal to the other girls. She was the peacemaker many times when some of the scouts were impatient with our blind scout. Nina was always patient and helpful to be sure she could know her surroundings and enjoy the sights through Nina’s eyes. There was a “grumpy” scout who wouldn’t even wear her uniform on the special dinner night for our St Augustine trip. Nina found humor to defuse little miss grumpy. (Those 2 are still the best of friends today!)

Extraordinary and sweet then and now describes Nina. She is a loving mother to her two kids, Kayla (11) and Nolan (8).

And a caring wife to her husband Ryan. She was an extraordinary teacher who was fearless to change careers. She found the determination to go forward with an idea to be so creative to jump-start a new magazine. Her partner knows she is loyal and dependable. Just the two of them together presented an idea with no “prototype” to prospective client advertisers. With a computer and a creative eye Nina designs a fashion layout. Her sense of humor helps to keep her on an organized path to get everything done by the deadline for press. Nina’s patience to follow up with calls to new clients and photo shoots makes her an outstanding businesswoman. She continues to be helpful when it comes to finding time to be sure everything goes smoothly.

Nina is the best when it comes to knowing just the right thing to say to make each person feel special. She is very sensitive to everyone’s feelings.

Nina, you were an extraordinary child who has become an even more extraordinary woman. I am so proud to have you as a daughter and friend. I love you a bushel and a peck!

By Rose M. Angelillo (Deena’s Mom) What can I say about Deena? She was a special little girl who grew into a beautiful woman, wife and mother. She was always a very curious, sensitive child that always tried her best no matter what she was attempting to do.

Her energy level amazes me. She rarely sits or takes time to pamper herself. Even as a child she always felt the need to keep herself busy whether it was working, exercising or cleaning. Any spare time she has, she will find something to do. Her husband and two sons keep her busy as well as her family pets. She is one of the most thoughtful and compassionate people you will ever meet, and her sons are just like her – sensitive and caring boys.

She has given a lot of thought to creating a magazine for everyday women facing the same challenges she is facing in her life as a 40 something year old woman. So much to do, so many lives to enrich, so many animals to save, so many changes to be made in saving our planet……these are Deena’s concerns. Her desire to be the best wife, mom and human being is what pushes her to make a difference.

Staying physically fit on a daily basis, feeding her family healthy food and helping others make the same important life changing choices is extremely important to her. She truly cares about the health and well being of other people, especially children.

From my point of view, she has succeeded in all her attempts to be the best she can be and I am very proud of her.

The gratitude of being a 7-year cancer survivor has inspired me to coach people all over the world and supporting organizations today that can provide other woman with a close network. You can take an hour out of each day to do something for somebody. Its holy, easy and its something as a survivor I do naturally. God has put me on this planet to help others. Not only with words, but also with great passion and knowledge. All I can live with is HOPE. Tomorrow will be here. Today is TODAY. Live life to the fullest and enjoy each and every day, as I do with my husband of 17 years, Dr. Jeffrey Zipp, and our son Andrew.

n August of 2010 I began my battle with breast cancer. It was a battle I never thought I would have to fight. Today, I am happy to say I have won the battle and I plan on winning the war. Every woman diagnosed is one too many.

Hopefully within my lifetime we will find a cure for this terrible disease so no family has to lose another woman they love. Please do what you can to support the cause and be a part of the cure.

Since my diagnosis, I have become active in many breast cancer charities. Four years ago, with my sister and many of her friends, we started the Annual Woodfield Country Club Rally for the Cure, with all proceeds going to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Last year we raised over $25,000.

2004; I was too busy to have breast cancer. Only after the final biopsy, my doctor came back and only then did I grasp the gravity of the situation.

He said, I have some bad news; you have CANCER. Now it was time to face the reality that into my busy and happy life a change was about to come. “Your world stops spinning” after the beginning of the process- the initial shock sorting out information about the diagnosis and educating my own health became a priority.

my life was forever changed when I became a breast cancer survivor at the age of 35.

My initial reaction, like most women was fear of the unknown.

Luckily with the support of my family, friends, and an amazing group of fellow survivors, I was able to endure multiple surgeries, 5 months of chemotherapy and 6 weeks of radiation.

Since December of 2007, I have been “cancer free”.

I am proud to be a survivor and to be able to help raise money for a disease that affects so many women.

I

t was Tuesday, March 9, 2003. After 3 months of hearing, “it’s probably just a benign cyst, but we just want to make sure,” and having a mammogram, ultrasound and needle biopsy, the doctor and nurse entered the cold exam room. All I remember hearing is, “your malignancy…blah…blah…blah,” and “ within the next two to three weeks, at your earliest convenience, you will need surgery.” This was the one time that no one was available to go to the appointment with me, so I sat, alone, trying to swallow the fact that I had Breast Cancer. I was only 34! I scheduled the surgery for Friday (I wanted the cancer out of my body as soon as possible) and then left to go to my first night of class.

I know that I never thought I would die but I was afraid that I would lose my hair. As it turned out, I had found it early (ladies do your monthly self exams) and had a partial mastectomy (it looks like they took a small melon baller and scooped out a portion of my inner left breast), followed by seven weeks of radiation (I went on a cruise to Mexico in the middle of the treatments) and five years of Tamoxifen. I feel that I was very lucky because I did not have to have chemo. No one really knew I had cancer and it took me almost two years before I told people outside of my close circle of friends.

Now I am open (for the most part) about my experience. I still get nervous when I have to have my mammos and ultrasounds every four to six months. I have had two biopsies since (one out patient and one needle) and because of all of the scars I have nicknamed my breasts “Frankenboobs”. My Breast Cancer doesn’t define me, but it has had a definite impact on the way I choose to live my life.

Maureen resides in Wellington, a mother of 6, and married over 30 years. She believes in the power of giving. One of the many ways she gives back is being an active member of the Diabetes Association. Her goal every morning is to make an impact on others and a BIG difference in their lives.

Kids’ Corner

Back to School Jitters Renee - Elementary to Middle School Leaving my comfort zone may be a little scary. We have gone from the top (5th grade) to the bottom (sixth grade). It is a new level of life. I will miss all the teachers from elementary school, because they are all so sweet and thoughtful.

Switching classes will be tough. I hear the teachers get harder as you go on, but I feel that life will keep giving everyone challenges as they go through it...

Mellina – Elementary to Middle School I am very excited about going to middle school because I get to make new friends and have more teachers. At the same time I am worried that I’m not going make friends and not going to like the teachers or school.

Michael – Elementary to Middle School I’m a little scared about being bullied, getting a lot more homework and getting to all my new classes on time. But I am looking forward to seeing all my friends again and making new friends.

Rachel – High School to College “Everything happens for a reason” is the expression I have been hearing since I was in middle school and started to audition for art schools.

The whole college process was more exhausting then anything I had ever done. I applied to three colleges and had my mind set to one, Florida State University. I wanted to be on the Golden Girls dance team, apart of their dance department, and of course a sorority. However, when my decision letter came in, to my surprise, I hadn’t made it into the school. It was my first rejection and not to mention I had been dreaming of going to FSU since sixth grade, I was devastated. I got my next letter in the mail and it was also a rejection, I had no idea what to even think, I was so upset and I kind of panicked considering I only had one school left and that was Marymount Manhattan in NY. I got the letter and to my surprise I had made it, I thought “oh goodness, I’m going to NY, I’ve NEVER seen snow and I’m going to a whole new city without my family and hardly any friends.” It was a weird feeling and I’m still not completely ready for it, kind of nervous, sad, scared, happy, and excited. I wish I would have applied to more schools and applied a lot earlier but as I stated before, everything happens for a reason. Therefore, I feel like if there’s only one school I got accepted into there is a reason for it and I’m okay with that.

Since Matthew was in the womb he has been bouncing around.

The day I was being induced to deliver my little guy, he flipped around in my stomach from normal birthing position to sideways then breech. This episode is how Matthew got his nickname “Monkey”. Eight years later he is still a busy little monkey.

Around the age of 6 we noticed he had a little bit of a temper and sometimes could not control himself when he got mad at his older brother Michael. His first reaction was to hit or kick, which we did not like. We just figured it was all the teasing his older brother did to him that finally built up inside because he never got in trouble in school. His teachers always would say, “he is so quiet and so sweet”…little did they know our sweet little boy had a brewing temper. We continued to work on controlling his temper by having him count to 10 and take deep breathes.

When the Karate Kid movie came out in 2010 we took our boys to see it. Matthew absolutely loved the training, kicking and fighting. The following months after the movie Matthew practiced his kicks and punches for hours at a time. He eventually told us he wanted to take karate like the karate kid but we figured it was a phase since he had just seen the movie a couple of months prior. Well, as time passed he would mention it again and again.

Realizing that he was serious, I looked into Tae Kwon Do since there is a studio close to our house. That weekend the local Tae Kwon Do studio (Chung’s Tae Kwon Do), was having a Grand Opening demonstration event outside. Matthew was amazed what they could do, how high they could kick, how quick they were and just the sheer excitement of it all. That day we signed him up at Chung’sTae Kwon. He was so excited he could hardly contain himself.

Matthew immediately got into the swing of things in Tae Kwon Do. He practiced, and practiced and practiced. We loved that he loved it so much. As parents, the discipline, respect, honor and teamwork they also learn at Chung’s Tae Kwon Do was more important than the actually Tae Kwon Do movements.

Master Lim is amazing with the children. He is firm but kind at

the same time. You can tell the children of all ages respect and admire him. He allows each child to learn at their own pace and encourages them every step of the way. The classes challenge them which make them stronger, physically and mentally, building their confidence along the way. He teaches them to respect their parents, siblings, teachers, their school and our country and to be responsible for themselves.

Before they are tested to move on to their next belt color, the parents have to fill out a report card for their child. As parents we have to truthfully grade them on their personal hygiene, cleanliness of their room, relationship with their parents, teachers and siblings, their progress in school, discipline at home and following general rules. Master Lim looks over each report card and if he feels the child is not being the best they can be at home or school, he will not allow them to test for the next belt color.

We feel this method drives a child to want to be better and make their parents and Master Lim proud of them.

We have noticed a tremendous change in Matthew at home. His room is neater (but still needs improvement), shows more respect toward us, his brother, his room and his belongings. We are very excited to see his determination to excel in Tae Kwon Do. He practices kicking, jumping rope, nun chucks and breaking board on his own without being told. We are so proud of what he has achieved and how he continues to thrive. We would strongly recommend Chung’s Tae Kwon Do to anyone who may be a little shy, someone that has a lot of energy, or a child that needs improvement in self control.

Master Lim is working on putting together a kickboxing/martial arts class in the morning for women who are interested in losing weight, increasing strength, balance and endurance. Tae Kwon Do is not just for the young but also for the young at heart.

Emory had provided me with a very detailed schedule of appointments that I was to follow over the two day evaluation. I met with transplant surgeons, nephrologists, and social workers, had many diagnostic tests from blood work to an MRI and stress test. My sister, mom and Lisa stayed with me throughout the entire process.

Initially, I spoke with the Transplant Coordinator who asked if I had any potential living donors. Before I could even get the words out of my mouth to say NO, Lisa volunteered a big, “YES, ME!” From the beginning of my transplant discussions I was not comfortable with anyone close to me donating their kidney. I was satisfied with being on as many transplant lists as I could and enduring dialysis three nights a week until a call would come, telling me there was a match.

I did not want anyone taking the risk of giving up a vital organ.

hen you’re 12 years old, the only important thing is the present moment and the friends that fill it. As we grow from adolescents to adults, the cycle of life changes direction, and more likely than not, we lose friends along the way. In my life, I have been fortunate enough to have the same best friends from way back when.

There were three of us, and we always stayed in touch no matter where our lives took us. We had our careers (mine as a teacher), got married, some built families, but through the years we remained good friends. We are a trio, but two of us will forever have a special bond that holds with it the gift of life.

Memories drummed up from middle school or high school years always have the three of us - Lisa, Laurie and me. No matter where we went or what we were doing, we looked out for our threesome.

Whether it was helping each other with homework, lending an ear and a shoulder to a broken heart, sharing rides to school, or covering for each other with our parents - we were together.

In January of 2006, routine blood work revealed that I had an unusually high creatine level - which measures the percent of kidney function - and I was referred to a specialist. After several months of steroids and various tests, a biopsy found that I had developed a chronic infection in my kidneys. My kidney function was at 25% and my doctor suggested that I prepare for dialysis. In August of 2009, I had a procedure to create a fistula in my arm as an access point for dialysis. Once again Lisa and Laurie were there

supporting me and my family.

I was told by my doctor that it was time for a kidney transplant.

Dr. Jaffe recommended that I be evaluated for a transplant at the University of Florida. After reviewing my records and a few months of waiting for approval, I received a letter stating that they did not accept my insurance and were not contracted for kidney transplants. Dr. Jaffe and I discussed my options and my records were sent to the University of Miami and Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. My best friends traveled with me to the initial evaluations at University of Miami. Appointments were difficult to schedule and I had to be very proactive and persistent with them in order to complete the initial evaluation process. We were all trying to schedule day trips to Miami while working the appointments around our work schedules. I was so thankful that Laurie, being a nurse, was there with me as she was able to put the information in layman’s terms, language I could understand. How lucky was I to have a good friend be my medical advocate!

Both Lisa and Laurie had been asking me what my blood type was for almost a year, and each time I told them that I didn’t know it, which was true. Within five minutes of Lisa saying she wanted to be a donor, she was taken from the room to be tested to see if she was indeed a potential match. Still not comfortable with this decision, I realized I was fighting a losing battle with Lisa, my family and the Emory staff. On April 8th we found out that Lisa was a perfect match! The race was on to schedule surgery so that I could recover over the summer and get back to teaching in August.

Lisa made it her “mission” to find fundraising support for my life-long medical expenses. She established a fund through NTAF (National Transplant Assistance Fund) and friends developed a “Support our Lisa’s Surgery” Facebook page. Surgery was set for June 18, 2010.

We were surrounded by LOVE and SUPPORT from family, friends, co-workers and even strangers. We were treated like queens and had a wonderful send-off to Atlanta.

June 18, 2010 my life was changed forever for the better. I had beat dialysis and got my second chance at life because of the generosity of a true, lifelong, special friend. Lisa recovered quickly and feels as good as she did before surgery. I am the luckiest person in the world to be surrounded by amazing friends and family that mean the world to me.

In January, the call came from the Emory Transplant Center. They reviewed my records and scheduled my evaluation for two days in March. Knowing I was traveling from South Florida, they wanted to accommodate me by allowing me to complete the whole process in one trip. At the same time, I was trying to complete the process with the University of Miami. My thought was to get on as many transplant lists as I possibly could.

Lisa had just completed a real estate project and was between jobs. Since I knew she would be available when I was traveling to Emory, I asked if she would join me on March 15th. I figured she could visit with my family and attend my appointments.

We Love NY On September 13th, 2001, shattered as I was by the events of 9/11 I was overcome with emotion. It was at that moment I realized in a way I was letting the terrorists beat me. I turned this into motivation and set out into our nation’s heartland to help those troubled by this tragedy. With a box full of “WE LOVE NY” T-shirts and a heart of conviction I was off traveling by day and camping by night. I met hundreds of people from all walks of life. I was taken by how easy it was to strike conversation and bond with complete strangers. It was an unprecedented time in our country. People wore their hearts on their sleeves, cried openly without embarrassment, and we were unified in a way that I just could not have imagined. Today I know that many are still suffering and the pain may even be deeper for some. So on this the 10th year of remembrance, I hope we all make an effort to unite in the same way again behind those that are still feeling beaten or left alone by the tragedy. If we let this continue, we are losing the most important battle of all in the war right here at home. After all, what kind of soldier would leave the wounded behind in without a fight?

Bush, November 11, 2001 • Chicago Tribune The September 11 terrorist attacks provoked fear, anger, sorrow, hatred, empathy, confusion, sadness, vengeance - mixed reactions in a country that was forever changed. Below you will find personal anecdotes and news reports that reflect a variety of experiences, both positive and negative, across the country after 9/11.

An estimated 2,973 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks. The death toll at the World Trade Center included 60 police officers and 343 firefighters, 87 passengers aboard American Flight 11, 60 on United Flight 175, and over 2,000 occupants and neighbors of the WTC. The death toll at the Pentagon included 125 people from the Pentagon and 64 passengers on American Flight 77. And 44 people lost their lives on United Flight 93.

“I was totally distracted, and for a long time, I couldn’t even read a book,” says Jim, whose wife, was a police officer who died while rescuing people in the south tower of the World Trade Center “There are days when I don’t want to see people,” says a dad whose sons, John and Joe, a police officer and a firefighter, died on 9/11 in the line of duty. “If there’s a real bad day, I get in my car and I go to the beach in winter”.

“We can’t ever truly know what these survivors went through; we can’t ever understand the depths of their pain. All we can do is listen when they talk. “September 11 was something that was thrust upon me,” says Ray, a man who lost his wife, Barbara, in the World Trade Center.

“I didn’t choose to be part of it, but the fact is that it happened and I am part of it. I’ll accept it, I’ll absorb it, and I’ll do everything I can to continue to deal with it.”

“It still doesn’t make it all better. It just brings you peace knowing the bogeyman can’t come out of the closet anymore,” said Ashley who was a senior in high school when her father, died in the World Trade Center. His remains were never found. “Our lives have changed so much, Everything is either before or after 9/11.”

“I was in the left hand lane with my windows closed. I did not hear anything at all until the plane was just right above our cars.” Estimates are that the plane passed about 20 feet over his car, as he waited in the left hand lane of the road, on the side closest to the Pentagon.

“The plane clipped the top of a light pole just before it got to us, injuring a taxi driver, whose taxi was just a few feet away from my car.”

“I suffered major injuries in the attack on the Pentagon, resulting in partial disability and medical discharge from the Army. My twomonth old daughter suffered head injuries causing hearing loss and developmental delays”.

“I saw it crash into the building,” he said. “My only memories really were that it looked like a plane coming in for a landing. I mean in the sense that it was controlled and sort of straight. That was my impression,” he said.

All the way from China On the evening of September 11, went to bed early. I had been in my teaching position at Anqing Teacher’s College, Anhui Province, China for less than two weeks but the constant parade of visitors had left me exhausted. I tried to ignore the loud knock on my door at 9:30 PM. The knocks persisted--the voice of my teaching partner was insistent.

A friend in Shanghai had called her with the news. We only had the Voice of America to hear the horrifying news of the attacks on the WTC. Tearfully we prayed together, desperate that we were thousands of miles away from our loved ones, unable to telephone; fearful that our nation was under attack. At 6:30 a.m., there came another knock on my door. Standing there was one of my young students. In a very solemn voice he said, “On behalf of all the Chinese people I wish to express my condolences.” Today I grieve that we have squandered that gift of compassion.

Patch Project As a firefighter on the west coast I was at home with my family.

Obviously it was difficult to watch the Towers fall with 343 of my fellow firefighters trapped inside. I struggled for weeks after the tragic event wondering all the time where I would fit in. After speaking with a Los Angeles City Fire Department friend of mine, I finally discovered what I needed to do. As my friend was leaving Ground Zero and shaking the hands of the FDNY firefighters one reached out to him, shook his hand, looked him straight in the eyes and said, “Please don’t forget us.” I decided my part was to create a tribute patch that all firefighters can wear to pay tribute to those lost that day, create unity among us all and raise funds for the families left without a father, husband, brother, uncle and cousin.

The project was called the National Firefighters 9-11 Memorial Patch. It was my promise to Never Forget! After sending out flyers to all fire departments across the US, orders began pouring in March through June of 2002. By September 11 of 2002, hundreds of organizations were wearing the patch and $15,000 was donated to the U.F.A. Widows and Children’s Fund. For the year that followed, the project grew to include 4000 organizations in 22 different countries. There is nothing like seeing Greater Manchester firefighters wearing their hearts on their sleeves by displaying the

To have our military participate was the icing on the cake. They created a bond with our emergency personnel that I will never forget. Five years ago, I launched an anniversary patch that incorporates a soldier and police officer alongside the firefighter.

With the events of 9-11-2001 I didn’t think the race would take place, (Nov 4th) so I was overjoyed that Rudy Giuliani insisted the race go ahead. On arrival at Kennedy airport I was called to the British airways desk to be informed that my mother had died after a long struggle with cancer while I was in the air. In the previous weeks I kept telling my mom that I was not going to New York due to her poor condition, She insisted. It was a beautiful sunny day just like 9-11, I looked out of the window staring nowhere in particular, in an emotionally surreal state. Then came this wonderful sight, the Manhattan skyline, seen thru a kaleidoscope of tears and smiles because I love it so much. Two high peaks are missing where symbols are normally found. For New Yorkers a racial liquidizer teaches tolerance for all. Many years from now what will 9-11 mean? A date of course, a number perhaps. The rest of the world sings a chorus from that old Sinatra song. It’s up to you New York New York; we know it won’t be long. Your tears will dry for those hearts so brave and true. Every year I come back and run the NYC marathon with a message of support on my chest for your wonderful city. This time it’s New York running for the unforgotten and their families. Finally back in England the Yankees are not just a baseball team, not just New York City but the definitive word to describe the American nation. On marathon day one man will pay homage to your unforgotten past with unconditional support for your dreams and aspirations in the world series of events, both in and outside baseball to say go Yankees!!!! God bless the United States of America.

At the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, you start small: A briefcase, a Blackberry, a victim’s sweatshirt, and a hero’s nametag. Simple objects that tell personal stories, recounted in the donors’ own words. Stories from New York, the Pentagon and Shanksville, PA remind us that the legacy of 9/11 is not fear - it’s friendship, courage, and ordinary people pushed by extraordinary circumstances. Their stories deserve to be remembered across decades and generations. By telling them, we triumph over tragedy.

I ask women in the form of a confidential questionnaire what stimulates their desire. Ninety percent of women age 16-96 answer “kissing” as one of the things that stimulate desire. How difficult can that be?

Yet when I ask large groups of married men or women when the last time was that they spent time just making out….married people cannot seem to remember! Somewhere in the marriage, sensual kissing became lost.

The seduction of a passionate kiss was so overwhelming that it often led to greater things that evening. Women report that they love to watch the sexy, passionate kissing scenes in movies and that it does stimulate their own desire.

There may be some scientific basis to this. According to Helen Fischer, PhD an anthropologist who studies mating behaviors, it is the testosterone levels found in male saliva that when passed to the woman during a passionate kiss, increases her testosterone and her sexy thoughts. She mentions that the sexy kiss also raises a chemical in the brain called dopamine which makes us crave the partner.

Of the women who did not answer that kissing stimulated their desire, the reason given was most often that the partner had a kiss that was too wet! In fact, one patient stated, “My guy is like a Saint Bernard…he drools too much!” This led me to ask what constitutes a good kiss. The answers included that it did not cover the whole mouth at once or suck all of your air out and was not too forceful. Allowing “small nibbles” around the mouth and not too much saliva were key components. Soft lips were liked by some. Good oral hygiene was demanded by all participants.

Remember about five years ago when Sheryl Crowe got breast cancer and told Ellen DeGeneres it was from plastic water bottles? And people thought she was kind of crazy?

Powerful Parenting = Open Communication

BY Carmen Rosas Many parents have a “don’t ask, don’t tell” approach when it comes to talking to their children and teens about topics such as sex, drugs, alcohol, money, and violence. Let’s face it, it’s not easy knowing how to even approach some of these tough subjects. We wonder how much information to give, how to explain, and what words would be most appropriate.

In the complex world facing our young people each day, they are exposed to a variety of issues and challenging situations. Along with all the usual pressures of growing up like dealing with parents, handling school work, making friends, and coping with all the hormonal changes, they also have to figure out how to handle all the multiple messages they are susceptible to receiving from the social media and other online content. These include Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Formspring, Skype, Instant Messaging, YouTube, emailing, blogging, texting, sexting, video games, TV shows and movies, advertisements, and the list goes on and on!

Learning to navigate through all this can be a little confusing and somewhat scary, and unfortunately, when they don’t have anyone to turn to, they may look to other sources for answers. Just as we inoculate our small children against life-threatening illnesses like measles, we can also “immunize” our children against things like drug use, underage drinking, and sexually transmitted diseases by giving them the facts before they are presented with the situation.

You can give kids an opportunity to evaluate these difficult issues by talking honestly about what factors to consider in making decisions that are consistent with their values. There’s no doubt that without the right kind of information to help them make safe and healthy choices, a strong desire to fit in may still kick in.

Before they know it, many will just go ahead and experiment since, most likely, they have no idea what they’re doing.

It is critical that parents establish an early pattern of communication that will encourage children to look to them for guidance. However, open communication is a powerful parenting tool that just doesn’t happen over night. So how can we get kids to communicate, especially when they’re not talkative or just clam up? One suggestion would be to take a proactive role by becoming involved in their school and extracurricular activities. Then, use everyday opportunities to talk. You might also ask about how their friends are doing. This might make it easier for them to talk because they won’t necessarily have to talk about their own experiences.

Make an effort to set a calm, warm, and friendly tone for your discussions so that they are not viewed as an interrogation session or a lecture. You can initiate conversations with sincere and open-ended statements about what you’re thinking and feeling. In addition, young people will feel valued and respected when their thoughts and opinions are solicited. You can also share your own feelings and thoughts. Another way to start a conversation about the beliefs and values you would like to instill and reinforce is to watch TV and movies together. There are so many interesting topics that can be explored in an age-appropriate way, i.e. stereotypes, violence, illegal drug use, solving conflicts, smoking, etc. Even if this doesn’t spark an immediate discussion, at least you’ve made them aware that you’re willing to share and hear what

they have to say. Moreover, they might even be willing to come to you for help in the future instead of going elsewhere.

Finally, perhaps the best way to nurture your relationship and open up the lines of communication with your children and teens is to maintain an ongoing caring and supportive dialogue. Have clear expectations, discuss consequences, and recognize positive qualities and behaviors. You can build closeness in your relationship by taking the time to really listen in a way that conveys honesty, openness, and respect about the many issues that are important in their lives. What this means is, that as difficult as it may be not to give advice, sometimes you just have to listen. Oftentimes, when they feel validated and understood, they can figure things out for themselves. Be patient and give them time to talk about their feelings in an accepting environment that doesn’t judge or tell them what to do. Above all, realize that they are going to make mistakes. Be able to forgive and give them a fresh start, without continually bringing up the past. Let them know they are loved unconditionally, regardless of the choices they’ve made. Practice empathy and help them understand that it’s normal to have the feelings they experience. Help to put them at ease by letting them know that you too went through some of the same kinds of situations. In so doing, parents will find that they will have a much greater influence on their children’s thoughts and decisions in the years to come. Who knows, maybe someday, they may even ask, or rather “text” you, to find out what you think!

Staying Healthy Should Not Only Be A Priority For You, But Also For Your Pets

In South Florida, where people dress with less year round, plastic surgery is far more common than in climates where bundling up for 6-8 months of the year is necessary. And when it comes to choosing a talented, experienced and compassionate plastic surgeon, we found Dr. DeLuca fits the bill!

Dr. Louis DeLuca, who has been in practice in the South Florida area for over 12 years, notes that while his practice is primarily aesthetic in nature (85%), he still enjoys the reconstructive aspect of his trade. The majority of his patients range from 25 -50 years old. Dr DeLuca’s practice focuses on breast and body contouring, however he also performs numerous eyelid surgeries and non-invasive procedures such as Botox, Restylane, Juvederm and fat grafting.

When asked about his surgical procedures, Dr. DeLuca shares that ‘My favorite surgeries include tummy tucks, breast lifts and revisional surgery because they each represent a unique challenge.’ Although I no longer perform facelifts, I really do enjoy doing eyes,” Dr. DeLuca says. “As a plastic surgeon, it’s imperative that you like what you’re doing – otherwise you will not channel your creativity consistently. I come to work and have fun. Sure I’ve had my bad days but that is the nature of any job.

More importantly, I have many, many more good days than bad and that is why I love what I do.

Reconstructive surgeries remain an integral part of Dr. DeLuca’s practice. The majority of these cases involve facial reconstruction due to trauma and breast reconstruction for breast cancer patients. “I remember when I was a surgical resident, insurance wouldn’t cover surgery of the opposite breast to allow a woman to achieve better symmetry following reconstruction. Thankfully, that ridiculous insurance practice has been changed and reconstructive breast surgery is adequately covered,” Dr. DeLuca comments. He strongly emphasizes the positive effects of breast reconstruction for the breast cancer survivor.

Breast reconstruction can restore a very natural aspect of a woman’s femininity, boosting self-esteem, self-image and personal confidence.

Patients in South Florida have come to trust in Dr. DeLuca’s wealth of experience with a variety of techniques for less invasive procedures including fillers, Botox, fat grafting, and more. His current area of interest is the application of stem cell therapy in the plastic surgery Dr. DeLuca field. While the concept of stem cell therapy is not new, its role in treating cosmetic surgery patients to enhance aesthetic outcomes is a relatively new concept. The future of stem cells is wide open and Dr. DeLuca is embracing the technology from its inception.

Keeping an eye on your health and fitness takes plenty of time and effort. Staying healthy should not only be a priority for you, but also for your pets. At Simmons Veterinary Hospital, we help our clients learn how to achieve and maintain a healthy weight for their pets. Here are some of our tips.

Routinely, I see overweight animals, some of which are on the edge of obesity. Unfortunately being overweight can lead to some serious health problems. One study by Purina showed that on average, a dog that is a healthy weight lived 1.8 years longer than its overweight counterpart. Excess body fat can also lead to other health problems such as osteoarthritis and diabetes. These conditions are too often seen in overweight cats.

What can you do to prevent these health concerns and help your pet live longer? Start by looking at the treats and table foods your animal eats. For example, when a 10 pound cat receives an ounce of cheese as a treat, it is equivalent to a person eating 3½ hamburgers! For a 20 pound dog, giving a hot dog as a treat is equivalent to a person eating two whole chocolate bars! Change your mind set when treating your pet – what seems like a very small amount to you is a HUGE amount of calories for an animal 1/10th your size.

You do not need to cut out ALL treats; pets should be included in our daily activities and rewarded for good behavior. I recommend switching treats and table food for healthy choices. For dogs, try carrots, frozen peas, pieces of apple, or other fruits/veggies for a low

calorie alternative that many animals love. For cats, I recommend using dry cat food mixed with catnip as treats, as well as cat grass for something to munch on.

Just like for you and me, increasing activity level will also help get the weight off your pets. For dogs, this is easy, but for cats, it is trickier. Placing food bowls in areas where your cat must move or jump to is one recommendation.

Another is rolling dry kibble across the floor as a game so the cat can chase the food, then eat the reward. Also, try a “food ball” toy that distributes food as your cat plays.

Finally, portion-control is important. MEASURE the amount of food your pet eats. You need to feed your animal based on the recommended guidelines on the food package. The weight you use should be your pet’s ideal body weight. Ask your veterinarian for help determining a healthy weight.

By incorporating these guidelines into your pet’s day, you can help your pet achieve a long, happy, and healthy life!
