Easy Entertaining Tips

Do as much as you can before the day of. This will keep your pre-party stress level as low as possible. Clean the house, program the iPod, and purchase all booze and food at least a day in advance.

The night before, set the table with all the place settings and decorations to save some time the next day. On the day of the party, start getting ready in the morning by prepping all of the food, setting up the bar, arranging the flowers, and generally tidying up. If you want your guests to stay out of the kitchen, place buffet and drink tables in other areas of your home. Buffet dinners have the advantages of being less stressful and often more fun than the formal seated variety.

Sugar by any other name Low carbohydrate, low fat or sugar free foods can be very misleading. Most times they substitute the fat with sugar to maintain the flavor that is most appealing. Even foods that claim they are sugar free contain sugar is some form which you will find when you read the ingredients. Some are sweetened with artificial sweeteners like saccharin, sucralose, aspartame, acesulfame K, or neotame. Here is a list of some of the possible code words for “sugar” which may appear on a label. Hint: the words “syrup”, “sweetener”, and anything ending in “ose” can usually be assumed to be “sugar”. If the label says “no added sugars”, it should not contain any of the following, although the food could contain naturally-occurring sugars (such as lactose in milk). Agave Nectar, Barley Malt Syrup, Corn sweetener, Corn syrup, or corn syrup solids, Dehydrated Cane Juice, Dextrin, Dextrose, Fructose, fruit juice concentrate, Glucose, High-fructose corn syrup, Honey, invert sugar, Lactose, Maltodextrin, Malt syrup, Maltose, Maple syrup, Molasses, Raw sugar, Rice Syrup, Saccharose, Sorghum or sorghum syrup, Sucrose, Syrup, Treacle, Turbinado Sugar, Xylose. Remember, your body doesn’t care what the label says, it’s all just “sugar”! A Word About Sugar Alcohols: A lot of “Sugar Free” foods have ingredients called sugar alcohols in them such as maltitol and sorbitol. These ingredients can be as bad or worse than sugar. The absolute key to a successful party is to get people dancing. Not that they can’t have fun sitting in their chairs and chatting, but if a good number of your guests get up and boogie, your party will be remembered as a rocking good time. So cue your iPod and let the good times begin! If you intend to share your leftovers with your guests, don’t send them home with your expensive containers. Plan ahead and purchase an inexpensive supply of disposable containers that you don’t mind if you ever see it again. Grab a cocktail and enjoy your party… Cheers!

How I Empowered My Women Friends With ® Kangen Water A

by Marilyn Murray Willison

s we all know, women love to be helpful. Few people know this as well as I, because I have spent the last two decades chronicling a wide variety of famous women and what they have done to make this world a better place. Even before I wrote ‘The Self Empowered Woman’ (Amazon, $18.99), I was lucky enough to help others through my work as the Health and Fitness Editor for the LA Times Syndicate. For several years, this job gave me the opportunity to research medical trends that would be useful to my female readers. Imagine how much pleasure it gave me to actually be paid to learn about how our bodies worked, what could influence our health, and what we could do as individuals to enhance our wellbeing.

Fast forward a few decades to the present day, when I happened to stumble across the World’s Best-Kept Health Secret! Even though I had been a so-called ‘expert’ in the health field, I had somehow failed to understand the importance of adequately hydrated cells which create a pH balance within the body. Lucky for me, while on a speaking engagement to promote my latest book, a woman approached me with a simple question: ‘Have you heard about Kangen Water ®?” I was curious to learn more. Boy, was I in for a surprise! Within two weeks of replacing my (plastic) - acidic bottled water, I began to notice positive changes, which was more surprising than one might expect. Why? The answer is because in the mid-1980’s I had been diagnosed with MS (multiple sclerosis) and told by a neurologist to ‘go home and get your life in order.’ At the time, I was in my early 30’s, a single mother to two little boys, and a busy editor at the LA Times. There I was, the Fitness Queen who had never done drugs, never smoked, never drank in excess, and spent her spare time dancing on pointe shoes (ballet), and sailing over oxers (show jumping). It was unimaginable to me as well as to everyone who knew me, but within six years of his dire prognosis, I was wheelchair dependent. It wasn’t until I became educated about the importance of pH balance and acidosis that the other shoe dropped. I realized for the first time that a bad medical diagnosis didn’t have to be the final word. I found out that the body can repair health problems as long as it is adequately hydrated with alkaline, ionized, microclustered Kangen Water ®. Within a month of using what I now call ‘magic water,’ I began to see changes that defied everything the doctors had told me! Toes that had been rigid for years began to wiggle. Fingers that were tightly

After I began to notice positive effects, I decided to try to help friends of mine who had health issues. Debbie, who had been nursing a broken toe for four months, noticed that the black and blue color had been replaced with healthy, pink skin. And Linda, who had suffered with arthritis for decades, began to walk more upright (and with less pain) even though she still used her cane. After seeing how their well-being had improved, I couldn’t wait to begin helping my other friends. Sure enough, the water made June’s skin less flakey, Toni was finally able to sleep soundly all night for the first time in years, another friend noticed that her fingernails were stronger and no longer had ridges, and a neighbor swore that her eyesight improved. It was important to me that the people in my life understood that the Kangen Water ® hadn’t CURED anything. But what it had done was super-hydrate the body so that a natural healing could occur. Once I understood that most of us are walking around with dehydrated brains, cells and other body tissues, it made sense that all we needed to do was stop bathing our cells in acidic substances day after day after day. Balancing the body’s pH is imperative. This is what determines its level of health. Dr. Otto Warburg received the Nobel Prize for this study in 1931! Saving our planet without putting plastic in our oceans is another benefit. If you want to feel better – and help the people you love feel better, too – the answer is, ‘Change Your Water, Change Your Life’ ™ with Kangen Water ®. All you have to do is make one simple phone call 561-628-1845 and get the process started: B. Brooke Peterson. Or get a free eBook at: www.Affinity4Alkalinity.com. I’m Hungry…

Beating to a Different Drum BY Denise Alfredson

Meet Daniel, a very bright twenty-four year old entrepreneur-

type with the world at his fingertips. It was not always this way for Daniel. He was on a path to certain failure as far as the system was concerned; the school system that is. Daniel has ADHD/ADD which I believe resulted from damage by a vaccine he received at six weeks of age. But, that’s a topic for another article. Daniel attended kindergarten, first and second grades at a private, Christian school without any problems. The classrooms for those grades were fairly unstructured with plenty of opportunity for movement and outdoor recess. However, by third grade things began to unravel for him. His desk sat isolated in the corner of the classroom, facing the wall. His teacher had confiscated every pencil, ruler, etc. because he drummed on the desk with them. Comments from the teacher to the class were: “The class cannot go to lunch because Daniel has not finished his test yet.” I watched with such sadness as my son faded away. Frustration and bitterness replaced his once happy demeanor. In a desperate attempt to spare him from certain failure, I withdrew him and his sister from school and embarked on this adventure called home schooling. The first year we were home was frustrating to say the least. By then I had a third child and felt very unsure about this undertaking. I faced the same challenges with Daniel as his teachers had. I belonged to a Mom’s group at church with many other home school families. One of the moms gave me a book entitled, The Way They Learn by Cynthia Ulrich Tobias. She writes of the learning styles we all possess. While most of us are familiar with visual or auditory learning styles, I learned that I had been blessed with a kinesthetic learner. Daniel needed to move while learning. Wow, what a revelation! Things started making sense. Daniel began reading on rollerblades, marching to math facts, and both our lives changed. Unfortunately, most traditional classroom settings do not accommodate this learning style very well. A kinesthetic learner, when asked to be still, will focus all of

Daniel (24), Grace (22), Matthew (19) Bottom - L to R Denise (Fabulously 46), James (5), Christian (7), Eric their energy and attention on not moving, and therefore miss the whole lesson. Another book I found helpful was A Hunter in a Farmer’s World by Thom Hartman. The author illustrates attention deficit, not as a disorder, but rather as a gift. Individuals with this label possess unique gifts and a keen sense of their surroundings once useful in societies where hunting for food was necessary. Now, in our modern age of farming, these individuals and their gifts are obsolete. That was sixteen years ago. I have subsequently home schooled the children through high school with outstanding results. My daughter Grace, 22, graduated with honors in Political Science from Lindenwood University and my son Matthew, 19, has almost completed his AA. I am presently teaching kindergarten to James, 5 and second grade to Christian. 7. And so my adventure continues. Happily, Daniel went on to thrive in a learning atmosphere conducive to his style. He attended prep school in Connecticut for the end of high school where he played on the ice hockey team. Daniel graduated with honors from Lake Forest College in Illinois, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Computer Science. I often wonder how the story would have ended had I left Daniel in a conventional school setting, entrusting his education to the experts.

If your children come home from school hungry — and what child doesn’t — is it okay to let them have snacks before dinner? With all you’ve been hearing about childhood obesity, it’s a legitimate concern. But the answer is yes. Snacks for kids can be helpful, even important for children. However, picking the right snacks for kids is important. Providing healthy snacks is a better way of combating childhood obesity than prohibiting eating between meals. You want to keep an eye on your kids’ nutrition, but you don’t want them to be so hungry they’ll eat just anything. Here are a few after school snack ideas:

Huffing & Puffing? Lose tHe stuffing! By Elizabeth Johnson It’s time for some critical decision-making. In the weeks to come, there will be many occasions where you’ll have to decide if a food placed in front of you is worth eating. You will be inundated with selections and varieties of foods that tempt your taste buds, but gradually grow your gut. Wait… what? Gut? That’s right. As delicious as these dishes may be, they can be too much of a good thing. This year, instead of shrugging your shoulders and tossing up your hands in an “I forfeit my soul to the food-gods” type attitude, look for ways to critically consider your eating situation, and choose only those foods that you really want to eat on the day that you really want to indulge.

Medical Tests for Women in Their 40’s How healthy are you? Your 40s are a great time to assess the current state of your health, correct the abuses of your past, and prepare your body for the next four, five (or six) decades of your life. Your doctor can help by checking you for problems that can rob you of your health. Here’s a list of the basic tests women should ask for. (Note that your doctor may recommend additional tests based on your personal health profile.) Recommended Related to Women

• Blood sugar. Decades of eating the wrong food (think chocolate, hot dogs, fries -- you get the picture) plus weight gain (often due to hormone changes) may have overworked your poor pancreas. It can’t keep up and that can lead to diabetes. Starting at age 45, be sure to get a fasting blood sugar test, and then at least once every three years. • Breast exam and mammogram. You’re probably checking your breasts at home regularly and your doctor does an exam annually, but most experts recommend adding a mammogram to the mix somewhere after age 40 or 50. When to start? Work with your doctor to decide. Blood pressure. Don’t be surprised if your blood pressure starts rising now -- that’s common. Fortunately, you can lower your blood pressure through diet, exercise, and medication. Lower blood pressure is a key factor in longevity. Cholesterol profile. This simple blood test can save your life. One in five Americans has high cholesterol, a condition that leads to heart attacks or strokes - diseases that claim a life every 33 seconds!. Stepping on the scales. You blissfully enjoyed chips and hamburgers while ignoring your expanding waistline, but the scale doesn’t lie. Being overweight puts you at high risk for developing a number of diseases, including diabetes and heart disease. Pelvic Exam and Pap. Yes, you still need these -- especially if you’re sexually active. Ten minutes of mild discomfort once every one to three years pays big dividends in protecting you from cancer and sexually transmitted diseases. Looking for moles. Those years of getting “a healthy tan” can lead to something not so healthy -- skin cancer. Luckily, most skin cancers are curable. So don’t forget to ask your doctor to check your skin for unusual moles or skin changes once a year. Having trouble reading or working at the computer? It’s not unusual. Be sure to get your eyes examined every one to two years to check for common problems like presbyopia, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

This year, give yourself the gift that keeps on giving. Schedule a visit to your dentist, and call your doctor to see if there are important tests you should take. By investing an hour or so with the doctor now, you may be able to add years to your life. Information provided with permission by Webmd.com

ESSURE® tubal ligation Just a few years ago, a patient wanting permanent sterilization had to go to the hospital, undergo general anesthesia, have two small incisions and spend the next few days recovering. The Essure® procedure is done in the office using local anesthetic. It requires no incisions and usually takes less than 20 minutes to complete. Most patients go home within an hour of the procedure. Usually the strongest pain medication required after the procedure, is ibuprofen. Novasure® Endometrial Ablation Another minimally invasive, office based treatment available is the Novasure® Endometrial ablation to treat heavy menstrual periods that are prolonged or restrict a woman’s quality of life. The Novasure® procedure takes just a few minutes, requires no general anesthesia, no incisions and has minimal recovery time. Studies have shown that nearly 80 percent of women achieved complete elimination of their periods, and 98 percent had a significant improvement in the amount of menstrual bleeding. For more information on either of these procedures call Palm Beach Obstetrics and Gynecology at 561-434-0111.

Health/Fitness

What are men really attracted to? Not what you think...

New Year, New You!! It is time to challenge yourself physically and push yourself to new limits!!! A new year is upon us and it is the best time to start a workout program or make some changes to your current program. As we get older we must continue to change what we do and how we do it to beat the inevitable peri menopausal and menopausal weight gain. Here are some simple ways to increase the intensity of your workout: For treadmill walkers Week 1 - Increase the speed by a ½ to 1 mph for 30 minutes with a minimum of 3 x a week for a week. Week 2 & 3 - Increase the incline only, by 1, for 30 minutes with a minimum of 3 x a week for 2 weeks. Week 4 - Repeat the increase in speed again. Week 5 - Increase the incline. As you continue to increase the incline you will need to hold on which is fine. When you are walking try to take longer strides and keep you abs pulled in without holding your breathe and squeeze your butt cheeks. For those pounding the pavement Whether you are walking or jogging there are ways you can intensify your workout. Walk or jog for 5 minutes then do walking lunges or knee lifts for 30 seconds to a minute, then walk or jog again for 5 minutes. Keep this routine throughout your entire walk or jog and increase leg strength and balance while burning extra calories. (This routine can also be done on the treadmill but you will need to keep the incline down and speed at a slower pace) You can also get an upper body work out while you walk or jog. With 2-5lbs hand weights, in 5 minute intervals, which off between walking or jogging with these exercises; shoulder press, lateral raises, shoulder shrug, bicep curls, triceps kickbacks, one

Smoothies –

So many people believe they are making a better choice by drinking a smoothie instead of eating a meal but what they do not realize is how many calories and grams of sugar they are actually consuming. You can eat a more balanced, nutritional meal or snack for a fraction of the calories and sugar in the smoothie.

1 cup of 2% milk 2 ounces of strawberries ½ banana ½ cup plain, nonfat yogurt 1/8 cup Turbinado sugar

Approximate Total Nutritional Value: 498 calories 54 grams of sugar

Relationships

arm row and ALWAYS remember to keep your abdominals pulled in. (This routine can also be done on the treadmill but you will need to keep the incline down and speed at a slower page)

Women often get stuck thinking that all men want a woman who is thin, who has a specific color hair, who has breast implants, who wears a certain type of clothes, or who drives a certain type of car. It can be easy to start thinking these things, but the fact of the matter is that most men are pretty easy to please.

For elliptical, stair climbers and steppers Week 1 & 2 - Increase the level you are currently on by 1 even if you have to reduce the RPM’s you would normally maintain. Maintain your new level for 30 minutes with a minimum of 3 x a week, for 2 weeks. Week 3 & 4 - Increase again to the next level. Always keep in mind you should not be bouncing up and down while using these machines, your legs should be doing all the work while your upper body remains stable. To change your program even more, try interval training switching from treadmill and elliptical every 8-10 minutes. It confuses your muscles, making them work harder, giving you even more results. Within a couple of weeks of any of these programs you will start to notice the changes in your upper body, legs, butt, hips and abs. The key to success when it comes to exercise is to change your exercise program either by intensity or trying something new and challenging and NEVER, EVER GIVE UP!!! You are on your way to a New Year and a New You! 14 grams of protein 4.8 grams of fat 52 grams of carbohydrates * Substitute 2% milk with skim and save approx 35 calories and 4.8 grams of fat * Substitute milk with light soy milk and save approx 16 calories and 7 grams of sugar *Opt out the Turbinado sugar and you still have: 428 calories, 36 grams of sugar and 34 grams of carbohydrates which is still a little high in caloric and sugar content. When reading nutrition labels keep this in mind; your total number of calories per serving is based on the total number of grams of fat, carbohydrates and protein combined. Each gram of fat has 9 calories, and each gram of carbohydrates and protein have 4 calories each. So, for example: 2 Tbsp of Natural Peanut Butter has 200 calories, 16 grams of fat, 6 grams of carbohydrates and 7 grams of protein. Using the information above that would be 144 calories from fat, 24 calories from carbohydrates and 28 calories from protein totaling 196 which is rounded up to 200 total calories.

Here are the top 5 features a man is most attracted to:

• The Eyes. Most men are attracted to a woman’s eyes first

and foremost. This is not to say when he sees your beautiful eyes that his eyes don’t wander down and around the rest of your body. It is when she has beautiful or engaging eyes that he’ll begin to notice other aspects of her body. Nice skin. All of the time and money women tend to spend on our skin actually pays off. Men generally like women who have smooth, healthy, natural looking skin. This shouldn’t be read that they like women who wear a ton of makeup to make it appear as though they have good skin. A nice scent. Men like a woman who smells good, but remember that for men there is too much of a good thing. If you wear a perfume make sure that you keep it very tame, just a spray or two. Sense of humor. A man likes a woman who knows how to laugh. There is nothing more enjoyable than watching someone light up from the inside out and no one knows this better than men. Don’t be so reserved, but also don’t be one of those women who laughs at everything as this comes off as fake and that is very unattractive. Natural beauty. While many women feel like they have to have surgeries and use a plethora of beauty products to be beautiful. Men like it when you keep it natural, so don’t feel like you have to follow the examples that you see on television. While he may be intrigued with the women on the big screen that have boosted their natural assets, in real life he wants a woman who is au natural!

Claudia Diesti Revealed...

Beauty

For top hair stylist, Claudia Diesti, fifteen years ago the thought of flash bulbs, photo shoots, fashion shows and models were the farthest thing from her mind.

CELEBRATE! There are so many opportunities for celebrating the ‘Good Life’ here in our little corner of paradise this holiday season. My holiday season officially began with the cover shoot of this holiday issue: BEAUTY AND COURAGE. We took the photograph at the beautiful pier in Palm Beach -- the perfect setting that shows our fabulous South Florida culture and the reasons why we love living here -- Sunshine, beaches, and boating! Enjoy the best that life has to offer during the holidays with family, friends, gift-giving, and traditions complete with holiday delights! Do not stress out during this time – instead, enjoy the fun of shopping, embrace all that the holidays have to offer, and make time for you along the way! Some of my favorite holiday activities include seeing The Nutcracker Ballet, tree lightings everywhere, gift giving to friends and family, and the quality time we share with our loved ones. This is the beauty of the season. However, one of the most important things to remember is the gift of goodwill unto others that takes place within us. As we count our blessings, let’s remember how we can also be a blessing to others. As for a New Year’s Resolution…DREAM BIG! Have a happy and Healthy New Year. Laugh and Love,

BEAUTY 101 With Pany Q.

What are the most important parts of skin care regiment for a woman in her 40’s? Dawn, 40 of Wellington

A. The most important anti-aging regiment is to stay out of the South Florida sun. Your daily routine should always include a separate sunscreen or makeup with sunscreen in it. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser in the morning and evening. When it comes to products Retin-A Cream is the top performer in fighting wrinkles and stimulating cell turn over. A serum such as the Obagi Vitamin C Serum and the Skin Medica TNS RECOVERY COMPLEX, supplies a great amount of nourishment for the skin.

Q. How often does a woman need to exfoliate? Sara, 46 of Boynton A. I am not a big fan of too much exfoliation however it depends what

type you are utilizing to keep your skin vibrant and smooth which are some of the benefits. However, when it comes to deeper exfoliation such as Microdermabrasion once a month is all you need. I prefer the diamond tip, it leaves your skin soft for days and the skin looks radiant! Exfoliations such as scrubs are best if used once a week for all skin types. My favorite is NIA 24 Scrub it is gentle yet effective. When finished my skin always feels soft to the touch, healthy and clean! Stay away from rough scrubs; they could cause broken capillaries, dehydration and even premature aging.

Q. How often do you recommend the average woman in her 40’s to get a facial? Jennifer, 43 of Delray Beach

A. My advice is once a month for normal skin this ensures that your pores

and skin is kept clean. For oily skin and acne conditions follow professional advice of your aesthetician or dermatologist. Do you have a makeup, hair or skin care question for Panama D’avila that you want answered in our Beauty 101 Q & A column? Please email questions to beautyandwellness@fabulous40rties.com.

Little did she know that a desperate decision to leave her home country for the safety of herself and her daughter would also lead her on a path to regain her dignity and much more. Once in the U.S. Claudia’s life started quite unglamorous as she cleaned homes on Palm Beach (Island) and help the cosmetology school she attended to pay for tuition. The letter she wrote below shows that her determination to succeed far outweighed obstacles in her way. Because of you (ex-husband) I left my country and everything I loved to seek safety. The day I told you that you were going to be a father you said, “You could not love something you did not know.” I knew then that our daughter’s fate would be the same as mine. So many times she and I entertained ourselves by watching the children play from our window but never joined them. We never risked the consequences of your anger and out of fear we obeyed your rules. All that you took from me over nine years, my health, my self-respect and my success I take back with this letter. I find it ironic how often you told me I was ugly and that I was nothing without you but now people come from far away places for my work. You tried to keep me silent but thousands will hear My Voice. You forced us to watch life through a window, but I am watched from stages. Although you prevented me from becoming a doctor I have become successful in the world of beauty and fashion. Some of the industry’s best know my name. The day you drew a circle on a map around that small town and told me that I was not allowed to cross is the day I became a prisoner in my own home. Now I’m sending you a map of the world with places marked across the US, Canada, South America, Europe and The Orient. Never will you or anyone else determine my destiny. I forgave you long ago and turned my hatred of you into determination to make up for the time you stole. My scars have healed and although you tried to hurt me – you failed. Now with this one letter I will do to you what you could not do to me in those 9 years, I know this letter of my success will emotionally destroy you. Your judgment I leave to Almighty God, but before your life comes to its close I want you to know this, in the end your insults became encouragements, when you screamed at me they became blessings and when you hit me you gave me the strength I needed to push farther. In the end, YOU DID NOT BREAK ME! “Every man has his dignity. I’m willing to forget mine, but at my own discretion and not when someone else tells me.” -Denis Diderot

40 Fabulous Years of Serving Our Community Mr. Clyde R. Dunn

formed C.R. DUNN INCORPORATED in January of 1971. However, Mr. Dunn’s involvement in the electrical industry did not begin then but rather in 1948. Mr. Dunn began his career as a salesman with the well-established, Graybar Electrical Supply Company. Shortly after that Mr. Dunn moved on to Hamilton Electric Inc., where he later became the company’s Vice President. Mr. Dunn, being a man of integrity, honesty and pride decided to move forward and build his own business where not only he but his family would take much pride in. His education and knowledge in lighting system layouts, roadway and sports lighting, fabricating and installing instrumentation bales, underground conduit and duct bank, pulling cables and overhead distribution and specializing in high voltage systems just wasn’t enough for him. He longed for more knowledge.

“Mr. Dunn, being a man of integrity, honesty and pride “ 20 | Fabulous 40rties | Winter 2011-12

In 1996 Mr. Dunn hired Chuck Fitch. Mr. Fitch brought with him the education, knowledge and experience that would allow C.R. Dunn Inc., to expand their services. Mr. Fitch began as the Chief Estimator and Project Manager but quickly became the company’s Vice President. Mr. Fitch’s extensive knowledge not only included some of what Mr. Dunn had already acquired of his years in the industry but also experience in gate structures, pumping systems and stations, lift stations, waste water treatment plants, overhead to underground conversions and design/build projects, to mention a few. As mentioned earlier, Mr. Dunn wanted a company that his family could take pride in, so in order to do this he felt he should hire not only his son, Russell (better known as Rusty) but his daughter, Kimberly as well. Mr. Dunn showed them both the “ropes of the business” and with years of experience under their belts,

Rusty became a Vice President and Kimberly became the CFO of the company. Company complete one would think. Not quite, at least for Mr. Dunn. In his eyes the men and women who work for the company are family too, which leads us to the introduction of Rick Klotzbier.

With 40 years of incorporation C.R. Dunn, Inc. is proud of its “family” business, having served the Electrical Construction Industry with knowledge, professionalism and all around fine workmanship.

Mr. Klotzbier is a Senior Project Manager for C.R. Dunn. Rick is one of the hardest working and loyal employees C.R. Dunn has. Having been with the company for 20 plus years, Rick had worked and supervised many projects for General Contractors, City and Town Municipalities as well as South Florida Water Management, Palm Beach County, Northern Palm Beach County Improvement District and Palm Beach International Airport. Anyone who knows Rick knows he runs a tight ship and expects his crews to produce quality workmanship within a timely manner.

• City Place lighting and fountain lights, West Palm Beach

Some local projects that C.R. Dunn, Inc. has completed in Palm Beach County: • Worth Avenue, Palm Beach • Waterfront, pier and docks, Flagler Drive West Palm Beach

Since Rick has no problem joining his men with the hands-on work, his crews respect him and produce as expected. One of those men is Malcolm Rogers. Malcolm quickly proved himself as an Electrician and showed promise in the estimating area. Malcolm was asked to leave the field and come into the office where under the supervision of Mr. Fitch he would prove to be an excellent estimator. He has bid some of the most difficult projects, coming in with very competitive numbers. Malcolm’s contribution to C.R. Dunn, Inc. has been outstanding.

• Pump Station lighting of South Florida Water Management District

C.R. Dunn, Inc. Electrical Construction 1202 Pope Lane Lake Worth, FL 33460 561.585.2155

With mention of only a few “family members”, Mr. Dunn would not rest at night if there were no mention of the rest of the C.R. Dunn Inc. family. John McDonough and his crew are currently working on the Picayuane Strand Merritt Pumping Station project in Naples. Randall Moody and his crew are currently working on the Lakeside Ranch STA North project. Gary Wall and his crew are currently working on the East Atlantic Avenue Street Improvement project as well as many other small projects. Adam Campbell and his crew are currently working on the SFWMD S-142 and S-143 project. Rick Burford, Charles Watson and Oneal Muller and their crews are currently working on the Hollywood Street Scapes Phase II project. C.R. Dunn Inc. has an exceptional office staff which includes Terry Sullivan, the Office Manager and Lisa Soto, the Administrative Assistant and Permit handler. Advertorial

Jumping for

Joy

By Annie Bissoondial

learned that I had lost a thumb and needed extensive surgery the next day in order to save my index finger from being amputated,” said Annie.

A

nnie Bissoondial overcame a failed marriage, a long-term relationship and the loss of her home; however, it was most difficult living through the worst day of her life in March 2010, when she was injured in a roll-over convertible car accident. “Amazingly, my life was spared along with the others involved. The crash happened quickly and the instant I heard it, I closed my eyes and screamed ‘No, no, no …!’ When I opened my eyes, I saw Julius Mack lying 12 feet away, unconscious,” Annie explains. When a stranger from a nearby house came to help, Annie requested that she help Julius first. Within minutes the firefighters and paramedics appeared. Trapped upside down inside the car, Annie was a bundle of emotions – afraid, frantic, panicked and crying because she did not know if Julius was alive or dead. Joe, the firefighter, held her right hand until they were able to remove Annie from the car. He tried his best to keep her calm while assuring her that everything would be fine. After arriving at the hospital, Annie needed reassurance that Julius was all right. The emergency staff took a picture of the driver to show her that he was alive. Only then did she allow them to attend to her own injuries. “I didn’t know what injuries I sustained. I saw a lot of blood on my clothes and knew my hand was bleeding but didn’t feel any pain. I was rushed into surgery because I was going to bleed to death. I woke up the next morning in excruciating pain. That was when I

22 | Fabulous 40rties | Winter 2011-12

Because of the trauma from the accident and the loss of functionality in her left hand, Annie lost her self-confidence and became depressed. “Losing a body part felt like I lost someone,” said Annie. “The words ‘it could have been worse; it’s only a thumb and scars”, made me so angry. “I felt like a broken doll sewed up and hated the sight of my left hand. I felt worthless!” Wearing clothes to hide her scars, Halloween was the perfect camouflage for Annie. Dressed up as Audrey Hepburn with long gloves, she felt beautiful because they hid the scars and showed 10 ‘perfect fingers’. In the hospital, the plastic surgeon took a skin graft from my arm to save the index finger from being amputated. He decided to take it from my arm since it already was elevated to save me pain elsewhere. There was no one there at the hospital with me when he came to see me and I was under a lot of morphine. I wish someone were there with me so they could have told him to take the skin graft elsewhere like my bum or back. The scar didn’t heal the first time so I had two other surgeries to try to correct it but was never successful and the surgeon gave up. She says that this was the worst of all the surgeries. Months went on and Annie remained miserable every day from both the physical and emotional pain. She could not do her jump rope workout that had been a part of her daily routine for years. Instead, she had exhausting physical therapy 2-3 times per week. She hid her emotions by eating comfort foods and watching television. Sleep became a haven without the feeling of numbness in her finger, she was able to dream of being whole, and often pictured herself dancing like a ballerina with her arms and fingers stretched out.

Finally, after months of physical therapy, Annie’s effort and determination paid off. She was able to make 85 percent of a fist which prompted the doctor’s approval to continue with her jump rope workout. Excitement glowed all over her face! In the past, Annie admits to taking the simple, routine things for granted. Putting on earrings, zipping and buttoning clothes, even holding a glass of water or a needle are no longer possible. At first, she was sad and frustrated, but now when she drops a glass, it is okay. And if she cannot zip her clothes after three tries, on goes a sweater until someone can help her. Of all the obstacles this accident brought Annie, she knows that her depression was the most difficult to endure – more than the physical pain. Therapy with a clinical psychologist for months was helpful and gave perspective, but did not cure the depression. Many of her relationships changed. No matter how many times friends and family tried to help, their encouraging words went through one ear and out the other. Frustrated, Annie tried medication but stopped after a week. New clothes, makeup, nor a haircut could make her feel beautiful and take away the ugliness she felt inside. For eight years, Annie has started her day with one of her joys: Her Jump Rope Workout. “My motivator for working out is Tom Brady – a great athlete that looks and listens to me every morning through all the photos of him I have around my garage,” Annie says. While jumping, she uses a mirror to focus on her posture and motivate her to continue. Never taking the time to really look at herself, after her injury, she finally gave herself a long look in the mirror and asked ‘Who am I?’ “It was then that I realized that I have two choices: Either allow the bad to control me or make something good come from it,” Annie explains. “That day I told Tom in the garage that I am going with the good!” This was the start of a self-discovery that Annie embraced. She learned so much about herself including the good and the bad, what she has and what she does not. During this time, she distanced herself from friends and a social life in order to focus on herself. Gradually, Annie began to understand, love herself and re-gain her confidence. With a new passion for fashion, she started designing and sewing her own clothes and stopped hiding her scars. These days, Annie can make fun of her missing thumb and crooked index finger. She controls her depression by challenging herself with the number of jumps/skips per minute during her workout. Annie will attempt to beat the Guinness World Record for jumping rope (332 skips in 60 seconds set in April of 2009). She plans on setting a date to beat the record after her fundraising attempts raises $10,000. “I enjoy jumping rope!” says Annie. “It makes me happy and what a bonus if I can break the record!” To give back to the community, Annie is raising donations for the Barr Foundation that provides prosthesis for amputees that cannot afford them and/or do not have insurance. Of course she can relate to their plight, but is also motivated to help make someone walk, run, hold, touch -- whatever is required -- by providing a limb. “Imagine what it would do for their self-esteem and what they can achieve for themselves!” Annie exclaims.

For closure after her ordeal, Annie finally met the understanding firefighter that held her hand the day of the accident. “He told me everything was going to be okay, and I know he was right,” says Annie. With her team of supporters around her, Annie has begun a new chapter. The friends and family that have showed her kindness, given her encouragement, love, and support, are led by her major supporter – herself! Annie has learned to continue making something good out of something bad while inspiring others to do the same. She is dedicated to fitness and encourages others to never be ashamed of depression. Annie believes that having the desire, strength, discipline, patience and self-love can be powerful tools in overcoming any obstacle. Born in Guyana, Annie knew as a child that she was different and wanted to always be different. At 15 years old, she moved to New York. When she began college, her aspirations were to fall in love with a handsome man, have beautiful children, be a stay-at-home mom, and live happily ever after. Now 40-years-old, Annie realizes that her old dream has disappeared. Instead, she has become a better person, making new dreams and goals. “I have learned the true meaning of forgiveness. I was shown love from people I never knew cared about me. I learned to love unconditionally with heart-felt compassion for those with a missing body part. I know first-hand the importance of firefighters and appreciation for life down to all our body parts. I believe that my lesson is priceless and it would not have been possible if it wasn’t for Julius; Thank you!” says Annie. “My revised fairytale ending is always a smile on my face while I inspire others to make something good out of something bad! When the ball is thrown at you, you can catch it and make great things happen, or you can let it hit you…I guarantee it will hurt.”

Honor Thy Mother & Father

Woman on the Move By Liane Covelli The travel bug first bit me over 25 years ago when I buried my toes in the beautiful sand beaches of Acapulco, Mexico. The warm weather, beautiful water, tropical drinks, and tan men were truly a paradise I had never experienced before while living in my home town of Chicago. This was my first trip out of the country and I didn‘t want to return to the US. I imagined living in a grass hut eating fresh seafood and having my personal bartender bring me pina coladas served in a coconut.

By Marisol Rodriguez

Honor your father and your mother so that your days may be long in the land of the Lord. (Exodus 20:12)

M

y husband, Felix and I are in our late forties and each of us is an only child. We live in Lake Worth with our three daughters and my parents. I believe that we are a great joy to our parents as they are to us. Our parents, my mother-in-law, my mother and my father, moved in with us in 2004 because of their health. My mother-in-law’s Alzheimer’s disease was progressing rapidly. My mother also has Alzheimer’s disease and it was becoming difficult for my dad to take care of her by himself. My father had health issues that needed to be addressed as well. Our children were aged 6, 5, and 1 when this all happened. Felix and I had always agreed that we would take care of our parents when they grew older. We never expected their health to deteriorate so soon, much less that we would have them come to live with us all at once. Our life plan changed drastically, and since then our life has never been the same. For starters, we had to move into a bigger house that provided space for everybody’s needs. We had to learn fast and on-the-go. Our family had to accommodate to the unexpected and let go of the illusion of possessing absolute control. We became “Mega Multi-Taskers”. The hardest thing for us as a family was giving up our privacy. Not only did we have the grandparents, but with them came caretakers, outsiders in our midst, because my mother-in-law needed 24-hour care. Her illness progressed, and within a couple of years she was bedridden. She forgot to swallow and she lost her ability to control all body functions. We had to do everything for her in bed. She required a special bland diet and despite all of our efforts, she developed bed sores. It was very sad. Fortunately, we had a great team of hospice service providers that taught us how to care for her and support us to the very end. I am eternally thankful to them. When my mother-in-law passed away, she had the most dignified,

beautiful death. Our family felt great peace and satisfaction; in the middle of our sorrow we had great consolation because we all knew that we had done the right thing. My mother and father are still living with us. I am very thankful that I have part-time help to assist me with their care. Mom’s Alzheimer’s disease is advancing, though not as fast as my motherin-law’s illness. My dad has been diagnosed with vascular dementia in addition to all of his health concerns. They both have lost their immediate memory function, so it is as if they are living in the past, somewhere between 1930 to1970; from that point forward memories get confusing to them. They love to spend time with the girls and love when we have out-of-town family members vacationing nearby. My father is more active than my mother, but because he can hardly walk, we need to watch him closely. He loves our dogs, likes to eat, sit outside and get sun. He loves to chat and watch TV. Because my parents have special diets, we keep all food under lock and key. Even our dogs’ crates have locks, as we fear that my dad can trip over a pet when we are not around to keep a close eye. As a result of all of this work (keeping up with medical appointments, preparing medications, catching up with the laundry, the diet, their routines and, in addition, taking care of my 3 children, husband and pets), I feel like Mother Earth. It all seems never-ending but it is satisfying; it is a great source of grace and blessings. To honor our parents by holding them in high regard, to respect them and love them, is one of the greater things I will ever accomplish in my adult life. Taking care of our parents has deepened our spirituality, brought us wisdom and helped us grow strong in love as a family.

Lisa

Before

Lisa, at age 45, is about to embark on her next career adventure. In her 20’s and 30’s, Lisa worked hard building a strong foundation for a career in Marketing and Advertising. Being a working mother has not only helped provide for her family, but also strengthened the life lessons taught to her 11-year-old Hannah and 6-year-old Jack. Now with a new look and renewed confidence, Lisa is set on landing a new position where her experiences and talents will grow. Along with her husband Steve, Lisa is very involved in Hannah’s Dance Team serving as this year’s Team Mom. She loves boating, relaxing on the beach, traveling, baking, writing children’s books, and even squeezes in a weekly tap dance class. Feeling fabulous is a state of mind and Lisa’s committed to feeling good in her 40’s, inside and out!

Lisa’s hair texture is fine and her color was a natural faded brown. We cut her hair short and into a classic asymmetrical bob giving her hair some body and the illusion of fullness and thickness. To warm up the color of her hair we added chocolate brown with warmer tones which actually brightened up her face. We used KMS Volume shampoo and before styling to inflate her hair even more, we used KMS Volume Spray. To finish off this trendy look, we used Moraccan Oil “Light” just on the ends to give a smooth yet voluminous look.

After

At the age of 42, Elissa Lucchese is having the time of her life. Widowed in her 20’s, divorced in her 30’s, now she has come into her own in her 40’s. Elissa has discovered her love of the outdoors and her people skills by leading her son’s cub scout pack for five years. Focusing on her passions, Elissa enjoys reading, art and creating her own jewelry line. For over 18 years, she has worked for Work Comp Associates, most recently as their Customer Service Manager. Learning to enjoy life more, Elissa spends much of her time with her 13-year old son, Michael, and friends. You can find her, with camera in-hand, walking along the beach or hiking. She also loves to travel and to meet people from around the world. When she goes on Joe Tourist Outdoor Adventures. Elissa will be the one waving a big hello from the back of her friend’s motorcycle! Her 40’s are truly FABULOUS.

Hair & Makeup by Dominique DiBenedetto / Salon Bliss. Lisa’s clothes and shoes from Macy’s Elissa’s jean outfit Kohls, dress and shoes JCPenney.

Elissa’s hair was one long length and her color was a drab auburn with faded out hi-lites. We decided to keep the length within reason and cut about 7 inches off, adding long layers throughout and angled along her face. We added a side swept bang to bring the entire look together. Keeping in the red family, I used a bright auburn along the top of her hair and added a darker, richer red to add some depth and show off the layers. To finish off her youthful look, we used Moroccan Oil Hydrating cream to prep the hair for a beautiful blow out, and Moroccan Oil on the ends to give it a sleek smooth finish.

Getting It Off My Chest! I

didn’t even know it was an option available to me until 10 years ago. I am a dentist and my job is very physical. Yes, there are ergonomic postures recommended for us when we work, but really, when you need to see something way back in a dark space and upside down, healthy posture goes out the window. So, what I’m talking about is breast reduction surgery. A patient of mine told me that she had breast reduction surgery because of back pain and neck spasm and it was the best thing she ever did for herself. I was intrigued. I had always had a large chest and I did not know how to flaunt it. In fact, I was better at hiding it with baggy sweatshirts and hunched shoulders. I despised when members of the opposite sex would talk to my boobs instead of looking me in the eye. I just was not cut out for sexy. When I chose a profession that was mostly male dominated at the time, it only got worse. Thank God for boxy cut lab coats! Ugly, but useful.

patients that I met were more than happy to show me their results—just girls showing girls their girls!) I made an appointment for a consult. His demeanor was pleasant, professional and scientific. He did not sell me anything except to tell me where my incisions would be located. I knew immediately that I wanted him to do my surgery and placed my trust in him and his office team.

After learning about breast reduction surgery, my quest for this procedure was placed on hold since shortly thereafter I found out I was pregnant. Surgery was out of the question since I intended on nursing my daughter after her birth.

It is now four months after my surgery and I could not be more pleased. I’ve gone from a size 36 H to a 36 D. I can twist and turn all I want at work without experiencing painful muscle spasms in my neck, back and rib cage. I can wear bathing suits without wearing a bra underneath and a t-shirt over. I can run with wearing a regular sports bra, instead of three of them. I feel free and unburdened; besides that, my “girls” are so cute!

My plans were again put on hold when a friend had cosmetic surgery, not breast reduction, and passed away from a complication. That put surgery out of my mind.

I’ve experienced such positive changes from Dr. Vinas’ work. He has two offices in Palm Beach County: West Palm Beach and Wellington. Contact him for more information.

However, I met a few women who were happy with their breast reduction surgery performed by Dr. Vinas in West Palm Beach. Dr. Vinas used a technique that implemented minimal incisions and thus lesser trauma to the tissue and scarring. Again, I was intrigued. I Googled and asked everyone I could about him. His reputation was impeccable. His work was equally so. (Yes, his

25 YEARS EXPERIENCE

By Rachel DeMonaco You hear the slogans, “Save the tata’s”, you see the signs “Get your mammograms” and in October its nothing but pink, on everything, everywhere! For some, October is just another month on the calendar, for others it’s a time a to remember, honor and value the lives that were lost, a time for those who are dealing with breast cancer to be supported by an entire nation. Unfortunately, breast cancer doesn’t only occur in October or to the old and it is not just a woman’s issue. Recently I was sent for my baseline mammogram. The doctor told me it will be “No big deal, routine” were his words. So here I am at 35 making the appointment. I am more nervous of getting my boobs squished, the thought that they would find anything hardly crossed my mind. I posted it on Facebook that I was going for my mammogram and was nervous. My friends commented it’s no big deal, doesn’t hurt at all. I was relieved to find out they were right. The actual mammogram was awkward but it did n’t hurt and the nurse was understanding and explained everything she was doing and why. I left the appointment thinking good, that’s over, I don’t have to worry about that again for another five years. I was wrong, a week later I got a call from the nurse saying you need to go get a spot compression and a left breast ultra sound. Apparently, the mammogram showed something different in my left breast than in my right and they needed more information. Between waiting for the appointment and waiting for the results another two weeks went by. I’ll tell you, the Internet is an amazing thing. I learned more about breasts than I ever cared to know, but realized how important early detection really is and further tests are common with first mammograms. Luckily for me, the spot is a benign calcium deposit, but I have to go back in six months for another spot compression mammogram . As scary as all of this is, I am grateful. I am grateful we live in an age where early detection is possible and doctors take precautions. Don’t take your boobs for granted! Getting a mammogram and monthly self tests are about so much more than “Saving the Tata’s”, it’s about saving your life.
