Change Your Water...Change Your Life!™ Three Good Reasons to Drink Kangen Water® Alkalizing:

Hydrating: Hexagonal micro-clusters penetrate cell membranes, enhancing tissue repair and waste removal.
What does a pool and your body have in common? They both can become too acidic (pH is low).
If pool water is too acidic it will begin to dissolve the surface, creating a roughness which is ideal breeding area for pool algae growth. Over time, metals such as pool equipment, pipe fittings, pump connections, etc. will corrode and sulphates are formed. These sulphates are released from the water onto the walls and floor of the pool, causing ugly, brown and black stains. How does this relate to human beings? Our bodies need to be pH balanced or we become too acidic just like a pool. How it dissolves the surface of a pool is similar to how it would dissolve or break down your good cells, creating a “roughness” where life-threatening diseases and bacteria can grow. Same as corroding metals around the pool area, acidity also corrodes the “pipes” in our body and “internal equipment” i.e.; liver, kidneys, lungs, etc. Drinking enough water is vital, but it is also important to know the type of water we are drinking! Spring is here
and it is that so special time of year when our cooler winter weather starts to diminish, the grass and flowers start to flourish, the roads get a little less congested, and we are looking forward to a Spring break vacation or staycation. Plan some relaxing, fun, or invigorating outings for you or your family and enjoy this little break away from the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives. This is also the time of year to get back on track of our New Year’s resolutions, so take a moment to figure out which are the most important resolutions and start back on track one day at a time. If being outdoors is what you enjoy most, plant some flowers, start a garden or just lounge outside and soak up the sun while it is still bearable. For those of you who make getting your house in order a priority every spring, start some spring cleaning in your home. While you are cleaning out closets and sweeping under the furniture, think about this: Spring cleaning, while worth the effort, will only last for a season, but spiritual, emotional and mental cleansing could have an eternal influence. As women, we have so many roles and wear so many hats that Spring is a great time of year to take a few moments for yourself and reflect on the direction your year is heading. Are you still on track for the goals you want to meet? Have you penciled in some “me” time to do the things you love to do? In this fast paced, technology driven world the days and years seem to go by faster and faster and the important things and people in our lives get lost in the shuffle. As moms, wives and publishers of Fabulous 40rties Magazine, we sometimes battle with balancing our time between our family, friends, communities and our business and tend to get lost in the shuffle as well. It is so easy to do unless you implement boundaries and schedules and stick to them. Make this spring a fresh new start to the new year for you, your family, your friends and your business. Reach out to those people in your life that share similar goals, are positive influences, or people in your community that may need your help. Share your thoughts, your aspirations and your goals with these special people and pave the way to all things possible. When women truly come together and help each other, amazing things happen!

ne Saturday night, while dropping off my son to his nanny, I notice she is wearing the cutest outfit. So, I say to her in my singsong voice as if commentating on a red carpet gown, “Love the shoes! Love the top! Love it!” She excitedly responds, “It’s from Ross! $30 on sale!” We both squeal in delight. Her husband chimes in, “Why do you do this? Why do you care how much it costs and quote the price after someone compliments you?” We both stood there with our mouths open. He’s right, I thought. I do this all the time. I kissed my son goodbye and scampered away to have my night on the town! I got dressed in my fabulous outfit, and off I went to meet my girlfriends downtown for cocktails. When I walk in, my girlfriend says to me, “LOVE THAT TOP!” What do I do? “Thanks! Got it at Styles! 10 bucks!” It happens all the time! You meet a complete stranger in Publix at the checkout line, and if she compliments you on your shoes, I guarantee that the majority of us ladies will not just respond with a polite thank Page Sponsored by: Operation Connor Share This organization was started in 2008 as a way to teach my son, Connor about giving back. We started by handing out food at a homeless shelter. The next year we decided to cook ourselves and we made 10 meals and went out into the streets to feed any homeless people we had seen on street corners in and around Boynton. The next year we invited friends to join in and we made

you. Instead, we will go into a whole debriefing on where we got the shoes, how much we paid for them, and if the sale is still going on in case our new found “for the moment friend” wants to find them! Why do we do this? It’s quite comical. I’ve come to realize that it’s our common denominator that we share as women. We want other women to know that we can be fashionable, look great, and not break the bank doing it! It’s in our genetics. Years ago, I worked my way through college on QVC. Joan Rivers came on QVC to sell expensive-looking jewelry for peanuts. Fast forward. Today, Joan is still on QVC and Donald Trump’s wife, Melania, who really doesn’t need to pinch a penny, sells her jewelry on QVC too. The Kardashians have a collection at Sears, Sofia Vergara at K-mart, and Reba McIntyre at Dillards. There’s a method to the madness! We can look fabulous at a fraction of what it might cost on Rodeo drive. In our unfortunate struggling economy, it is important to know the value of a dollar and to spend wisely. The latest craze on T.V. is “extreme couponing.” Honestly, if I had more time, this would be my 3rd full time job. I love the whole idea of getting $800 worth of groceries for 20 bucks! Of course, you would have to wipe out your computer and get rid of that ironing board with all the clothes piled on it to “stock pile” your 40 bottles of Gatorade. Hey, if there’s a storm or natural disaster, my family won’t go thirsty and our electrolytes will be in tact! Gone are the days of frivolous spending! Put your pennies away for retirement! It’s never too late to save. All the while, you can be laughing and sharing with your girlfriends all the way to the bank! 50 meals and went out into the streets of Lake Worth, Boynton, Delray and Boca. This past year we had sponsors, cooked and served 158 people out in the streets in the areas mentioned above. olleen is a generous, compassionate soul. She works full time, sings at many different events part time (including Our National Anthem at both the inaugural Florida Marlins game, and the final game at Joe Robbie Stadium). She is a single mother to her son Connor. To set a good example for appreciating what one has and to teach her young son Connor the true meaning of Thanksgiving and giving to those less fortunate she started OPERATION CONNOR SHARE. Colleen orchestrates via facebook and other avenues the preparation and distribution of Thanksgiving meals to the homeless. Each year the number of participating families and contributions grows. This past Thanksgiving Colleen finally was able to have OPERATION CONNOR SHARE become a non-for profit organization. This will enable grocers such as Publix and even small independent businesses to make a donation and have it be tax exempt. This past Thanksgiving OPERATION CONNOR SHARE distributed over 150 meals to the homeless people in our community. She’s an inspiration and not only has

We did not have time to think – we just did. Toni jumped in with both feet and accepted the challenge
the voice of an angel, but she is living proof that there are angels that walk amongst us. I believe your magazine can assist Colleen in her message of OPERATION CONNOR SHARE and maybe with this exposure more and more donations will come into the foundation and the homeless and less fortunate can have a home cooked meal prepared and delivered to them on Thanksgiving and other holidays as well. I believe Colleen earned (her story) in your magazine by putting the needs of those less fortunate before her own, and passing along a wonderful character trait of generosity and charity to her son Connor and to each and every family that contributes. Colleen is the epitome of being FABULOUS and 40, and a role model for women of any age. I am privileged to call her my friend. – Carmela See Colleen’s article on pg 6

t the age of 42, being a single mom, I never thought everything I have ever done would prepare me for this chapter in my life. My daughter, Toni Lynne Cortina, 17, was given the initials TLC by no accident, and never before has it had such meaning. Cancer does not run in our family, so I was a shocked when I heard on July 21, 2011, that my daughter had a very large mass, called Ewing Sarcoma (rare form of childhood cancer), growing from her pelvis bone. The news of Toni’s cancer was another layer to the sorrow experienced from the death of her father in October 2010.

At the end of the day, deduct what you are entitled to – no more, no less.
Q: A:
I thought I was getting a refund because of all of my deductions? -Michelle, West Palm Beach
refund is a function of your tax liability and the payments you made to A the IRS during the year. If you did not get a refund notwithstanding your high deductions, it may be because your employer did not withhold enough federal taxes while processing your payroll or you did not pay enough estimated taxes. Also, the Internal Revenue Code limits a number of your itemized deductions several ways. First, by limiting the itemized deductions themselves (e.g., Medical: the first 7.5% of your adjusted gross income is not deductible; Miscellaneous deductions: the first 2% of your adjusted gross income is not deductible) or by nullifying them through the Alternative Minimum Tax (“AMT”).
almost did not make money this year, do I need to file? Q: I-Natalie, Delray Beach e requirement to file an income tax return is based on your gross income, A: Thas defined, your filing status (e.g., single, married filing jointly), and your age.
The IRS defines gross income as all money, goods, property, or services that are not tax exempt that you receive during the year. When figuring out your gross income, you can generally exclude social security benefits (unless you file married separately and meet other requirements). The IRS releases tables every year to help you determine whether you need to file. Contact your CPA or a tax preparer if you have any doubts. There are other situations when you are required to file. For example, you must file if you are self-employed and your self-employment income is $400 or more, if you are entitled to a refund, if you owe special taxes such as AMT, IRA excise penalties.

Balancing Holiday Debt
FINANCES
BY ANDREA WOROCH

ccording to a Consumer Reports poll, 6% of us are still paying off holiday debts from 2010. That means any new purchases racked up over the past holiday season will inflate those interest charges and make paying down the old and new balances more difficult and expensive. If the bottom line on your bills is looking ugly, it’s time to get a financial-management makeover. Consider these tips for balancing your holiday debt: 1. Double and Triple Up Multiply your credit card minimum payments two or three times to reduce the amount of interest you’ll end up paying. 2. N ow’s the Time to Negotiate Talk to your credit card company about negotiating a better rate on interest, fees and other expenses. If your interest rate is above 15 percent and they won’t negotiate, it may be time to transfer much of the balance to a lower-cost card. 3. G o On a No-spend Diet Stick those credit cards in the freezer, or give them to a trusted friend or family member to avoid impulse shopping sprees.

THE COVE SHOPPING CENTER 201 SE 15th Terrace, Suite 205 Deerfield Beach, Florida 33441 954.482.0233 Bianca, Your new showroom is absolutely beautiful! When did you open? We just opened our doors on February 1st and our longtime customers have been amazed at how it’s all turned out. We are producing the best parties of our careers. It seems like a creative atmosphere. Was that the plan?
Absolutely! I wanted our clients to feel that creative energy the minute they open the door. The idea was to create a space where people could come and be comfortable enough to kick their shoes off, grab a latte or a glass of wine and brainstorm about the happy occasion they were planning. We talk about color palettes and flowers and the feeling they want to convey to their guests. We talk budget and gifting and hospitality. We help them with sticky in-law situations and look over their contracts. We pay close attention to deadlines and bottom lines so they can focus on the fun!! How did you get started in this business?
Almost 20 years ago I opened a gift basket business in New York and added centerpieces and favors a few years later. Since moving to Florida in 2003, it has evolved into this fabulous party business!! I love what I do and I love making party planning a pleasant experience for my clients. All too often, people get so caught up in the stress of planning a wedding or a party that it takes away from the joy of the celebration. We want to allow them to retain that joy by relying on us to put together a spectacular day, always keeping their vision at the forefront. We help our client choose the perfect gift or memento, come up with a unique item for their welcome gifts, personalize wine glasses for their Bridal Party and find just the right favor for their guests. We go with our Brides to their fittings and cry along 10 | Fabulous 40rties | Spring 2012

We’ve been on a whirlwind since the opening! I ran my business from home until about 3 years ago, when I opened our first store. Now that the showroom has opened my husband is home with our children, he’s amazing with them! Everyone helps out; they can all tie a beautiful bow!! It really is a family business. ….and your staff ?
My girls are also part of the family. They are all talented in so many areas. We work in such a happy business and we have a lot of fun, but they know how I feel about deadlines and the work always comes first. I believe in always getting better and better and I know how important education is. We take classes in Interior Design, Floral Arranging, Graphics and Photography all together, so we keep learning and growing together. Why Piano Study Is So Important
KIDS’ CORNER
BY VIVIA TAYLOR
We have heard time and time again about the benefits of piano study. Numerous research have shown that learning to play the piano actually helps children score higher on SATs, raise their self-esteem, increase eye-hand coordination, shape them into well-rounded individuals, and plus, they actually learn how to play the piano!
Vivia Taylor began taking piano lessons at the age of 5 while living in Jamaica. Her dad had a toy accordion that she would bang on day and night! As a result, she was sent to piano lessons. She knew then, that she loved the piano, the sound of it, the look of it, and especially the fact that she could compose her own songs. Her never-ending passion for music grew and in 2000, she decided to open The Vivia Taylor Music Program, a music school that offered both piano and voice training in Mt. Vernon, New York. It opened its doors with only 9 students, but by its 3rd year, Vivia had over 40 students performing in a recital.
Over the years, Ms. Taylor has met children and adults who seek to learn to play this beautiful instrument. Here are a few of their stories:
Rebecca, Vivia’s youngest student at 4-years-old, was brought in for piano lessons. Rebecca learned an invaluable lesson in perseverance. She would often forge through her lesson with tears in her eyes, because of the tremendous challenge coupled with frustration. But through positive reinforcement, and numerous lessons in determination, she was able to play in her very first piano recital. Meet Mindi, an adult student. When Mindi was a child, she experienced a very unfortunate event in her life that crippled her confidence. Mindi vowed then never to return to music.
Luckily, she met Ms. Taylor and decided to give it another try. Mindi’s “monster” was overcoming fear. Needless to say, through countless hours of practice, some frustration, and sheer dedication, Mindi was able to destroy the “monster”, find her confidence, and performed 4 songs in the 2010 Fall Recital.
Learning to play the piano is hard work that requires dedication and patience. It teaches an incredible lesson – to have a positive outlook when facing difficult tasks while being optimistic that the goal will be accomplished.
Lastly, 7-year-old Jonathan refused to talk when he first came to the Music Program. Ms. Taylor tried everything for Jonathan to open up, but he did not budge. He lacked focus and this played out in his behavior. Vivia tried a different approach and now Jonathan is one of her best students. He raves about the piano! Reading a piece of music takes great concentration. One has to interpret each note and rhythm, and then translate it into hand movements. This teaches students to think critically and creatively.
Vivia Taylor is now a Palm Beach Gardens resident and proud mother of 3. She offers piano and vocal lessons from her private studio, and group classes in Palm Beach. For more information or to read more stories about the tremendous benefits of piano study, please visit our website at: www.vtmusicprogram.com. You may also email vtmusicprogram@aol.com or call (561) 972-8418 for more information or to schedule classes.

•B oost weight loss efforts. Research shows that breakfast eaters are more successful at losing weight and maintaining that weight loss compared to breakfast skippers.
•S harpen your mind. People who consume a high-fiber breakfast stay more alert than those who start their day with a high-fat meal, according to research. •P rotect your cardiovascular system. “When You’re Feeling Dim...”
HEALTH/FITNESS Eating properly and getting enough exercise is important, but you’ll never shine to your full potential if you’re Subluxated… and you can’t afford that. The world needs you beaming at 100 watts. So don’t wait until your light’s completely out. Get adjusted and shine bright with regular Chiropractic care!
E
ver have one of those days where you just don’t feel as right as you should? Your diet’s good, you’re getting enough exercise but for some reason you still feel drained and unproductive. Maybe it’s time for a trip to the Chiropractor… Think of your Nerve System as electrical wires and your body a 100 watt light bulb connected to it. When the wires are clear and electricity flows freely, your bulb glows to 100 watts. But if power is restricted in the wires, your bulb dims. Chiropractors call it being Subluxated or in a ‘state of less light/less energy.’ And the only thing that can ‘light you up’ again is a specific, loving Chiropractic Adjustment.

From hair and skin to make-up, this season is filled with opportunities for a fresh start. This season’s lips come in all shades and colors. Brighten them with hot pink or go for neutral sheers for a softer, more romantic feel. For the evening, choose classic red lips for a sensual, beautiful pout. Hair is sexy! Frame your face with plenty of soft curls and waves cascading in a softly layered look. Try a sleek ponytail paired with an elegant chignon wrapped around for evening. Romance, romance, romance is in the air with an amazing debut of new designer fragrances parading around our favorite department stores. If you are shopping for a new spring fragrance, I encourage you to sample the Jimmy Choo limited edition perfume. I was hooked the minute I tried it…and so was my boyfriend! Skin! Spring Ready Keep Obagi between you and the sun For maximum protection it’s important to use your sunscreen every day, because UV radiation can reach the skin even on cloudy days and through glass windows. That’s right, every day. When you’re not wearing sunscreen to protect your skin, UVB and UVA rays can cause the following damage: • Sunburn • Brown spots (sun spots) • Faster skin aging • Increased skin cancer risk Obagi sunscreens help prevent sunburn and protect skin health because of their unique combination of ingredients, reflecting UV rays away from the skin and absorbing UV radiation. Obagi Nuderm Sun Shield SPF 50 provides complete W! anti-aging sun protection and is ideal for all skin types.

skin care line for years. It does seem to be working, however should I change to a different line for mature skin? Pam - Palm Beach Gardens
A. I feel that as we gracefully age in our forties, the
most important aspect to consider for your skin is to maintain its youthful appearance. This is a good time for you to re-evaluate some of the products that you have been using and gradually consider adding medical-grade skin care products made with active ingredients that are safe for daily use. The goal in this fabulous decade is to Preserve and Protect! There are so many excellent products now available to provide us that provide a variety of choices. After all, we are still seeking that beautiful “Fountain of Youth” in the bottle. Choose one that fits your lifestyle.

BY KIMBERLY JOY
I
’m beginning to believe we all go through it in some way, shape, or form. As I entered my late thirties, I started taking stock of my life; what I had accomplished and what I had yet to do. In late 2008, I was 38 years old, a wife of 8 years, and a mother of two boys ages 4 and 6. I had enjoyed the last 10 years as a successful real estate broker, but the market was Regarding her age as “completely irrelevant,” slow, so with the Kimberly Joy became a Cheerleader at age 40! help of my amazing husband Tom, who encouraged me every step of the way, it was a perfect time to finally work on taking the baby weight off – after all, my baby was 4! I lost 48 pounds and got into the best shape of my life. My self-esteem and energy levels shot through the moon! In the summer of 2009, I decided that I would pursue my old dream of becoming a professional cheerleader; I started prep classes for the NHL Florida Panthers Ice Dancers. After the first class, I felt completely intimidated by the other girls, who were mostly half my age. During the class, hopefuls had to introduce themselves to the judges; they spoke in that droned out sing-songy voice like they were Kardashians. What was I going to say about myself ? A truthful vignette about me would have been “Hi, I’m Kimberly Joy. I’ve got shoes older than many of you and I am here because I’m having a mid-life crisis.” I held that thought back, knowing I had to play the part, introducing myself as a real estate broker with a background in radio broadcasting. Despite feeling intimidated, I kept at it week after week.
At the end of each class, one of the 40 or so hopefuls was awarded a free pass through the preliminaries. The pass entitles the girl to move straight to the semi-final round of the auditions. By prep class number 4 they announced MY NUMBER as the winner of the pass! I was chosen over all of the younger girls. Ultimately, I did not make the squad that year, but I took away an overall feeling of satisfaction that I had gone as far as I did on my very first try. Nine months earlier, I had been a frumpy baseball mom, and then I became a finalist for a nationally recognized Professional Cheerleading Squad. I shelved the cheerleading dream for a while until three days before my 40th Birthday last year, I got wind of another cheerleader audition locally for the semi-pro Football team. I auditioned, and my dream had come true! I became a professional cheerleader. I enjoyed the photo shoots and performed during the season. I evaluated my life’s achievements and my successes in the different roles I played in my life. I found myself asking, “Where is that girl I used to know? That girl who went after every dream she ever had?” I loved her. I wanted her back.” I had put my perceived attractiveness so far into the background of my life while I was busy raising my kids and building my real estate business into the successful 10-agent team it is today. When I decided to pursue being a Pro Cheerleader, I regarded my age as completely irrelevant. If I failed, at least I would know I went for it with no regrets! I tried for the Panthers again at nearly 41, and I had made it farther than ALL of my former squad-mates from the semi-pro team! I now possess a heightened level of confidence that far surpasses that of the girl I was in my 20s. I believe that a woman is not totally together until she reaches her fabulous forties. Now, I have one more bucket list item I am currently working on in the short term - to be featured on the cover of a magazine. So, I am doing the only thing a fabulous woman in her forties would do - I’m going for it.

RELATIONSHIPS
40 Years of Marriage? Are You Kidding Me?
BY JOANNE MCCORMACK
O
ur marriage began on March 20, 1971, a cold, blustery day with snow flurries dotting the sky. As my dad and I entered the chapel, my mom, looking frantic, let us know that the runner, bows and flowers did not arrive. With lightening speed and quick thinking, my soon-to-be husband and his best man ran to the main church to commandeer flowers from a previous funeral. On the first day of our honeymoon in Puerto Rico, we both suffered second degree sunburns and had to receive medical treatment. Instead of romantic evenings, ours were filled with “Don’t touch me!” whines and without sexy nightgowns! To celebrate the last night of our honeymoon, we were forced to eat in a local diner complete with cockroaches, because we were running out of money. (No credit cards back then). We returned home with $7 in our pocket. A short time after our marriage began, my husband was laid off from work, and to add to the chaos, our car was stolen. Is this any way to start a life together? Of course not! But we learned early on that we had to have a sense of humor and deal with adversity. As time went by, we bought a home and had two children. Parenting is one of the biggest responsibilities in life and a breeding ground for conflict. I was the “toughie” and my husband was the “softie.” This was 22 | Fabulous 40rties | Spring 2012
a problem we had to work on although we stood firmly and united on the big issues. Facing the teenage years as a cohesive team solidified our relationship. Every couple experiences hardships, and storms will inevitably enter their lives. This happened for us after fifteen years of marriage. I lost both parents within a short time. My mother died suddenly at age 52 and my father became terminally ill soon after. Losing my parents sent me into a whirlwind of anxiety, fear and depression. I became selfish and distant from my family and everything was an argument. My husband no longer recognized me as the woman he had married. Luckily, because we had a solid foundation of love, support and respect for each other, we were able to focus on our marriage and heal the wounds. Since communication was always important to us, one evening we decided to go to our favorite restaurant, and there we talked for hours. We realized that we were still very much in love and wanted to do whatever was necessary to honor the commitment we had made to each other. From that day on, our commitment to each other and our marriage never wavered. We have encountered many challenges over the years, but know in our hearts we will be able to face them together. Even more so after almost 41 years of marriage, I love my husband dearly and could never imagine my life without him. Being best friends, having common interests and goals, and showing an unselfish desire to care for one another has made our married years the best times of our lives!
Stories to be Told...
I
met this guy on an on-line dating service, he was a nerd but confident. We traded e-mails for a bit, moved on to the phone call stage (which only a small percent get there). Anyway, we talked and I decide that he really isn’t a good fit for me. He thinks I’m wrong and he deserves a chance. The daily texts...come-on, meet me out, you won’t be disappointed, I’m great in bed, etc. The last straw was the picture of his penis. Gross to start with and not even impressive! Why send it unless you are huge!? Lol I decided to try an on-line dating service and met someone. His picture was cute enough and we talked and he sounded like a nice guy. So we decide to meet for lunch at Old Key Lime House. As I’m waiting at the entrance, I get a call telling me he is walking up now. I start looking for him and all I see is this older guy walking my way. No way! He looks NOTHING like his picture. Not even 20 years ago. This guy obviously used someone else’s picture! Why meet me if you don’t post the real thing? Anyway, I’m too stunned to walk away so we have lunch where he proceeds to tell me how his dad was gay and his wife was a cheater and he threw the guy out the window. Check please! When he called for a second date, I told him I might date the guy in the picture, but I wasn’t interested in him. Ouch, I know, but seriously?

Dancing to Her Own Drum
BY TONIA TERMONT
Tonia was born, raised and educated in Northern Belgium, near the North Sea. As a child she traveled through Europe with her parents on their business trips. Therefore, her love for travel and the fondness of other cultures and language was in her blood and solidified at a young age. As a young adult, Tonia would become sick often due to the rainy, foggy Belgian climate. For this reason, her mom sent her to the South of Spain for most of her vacations. There is where Tonia’s love for Latin culture developed. In the Belgian school system, students learn 4 languages by the time they finish high school. For Tonia, the vacations in Spain added a fifth language. Tonia became a school teacher but adventure was calling and Belgium did not offer enough places to explore. On her 21st birthday, Tonia journeyed to the USA where she spent her first year in North Carolina. Even though the South was pleasant and a friendly place to begin her journey, Tonia did have trouble adjusting. Learning to navigate the language and culture proved to be challenging – everything was new. Soon after, a job offer was presented in Key West. As the plane landed in West Palm Beach, Tonia’s good memories of living in sunny Spain came back. The decision to stay in Florida was an easy one that also brought about a career change. Tonia became a therapist, specializing in Lymphatic Drainage, a very specialized treatment for post-cancerous patients, especially breast cancer patients who develop lymphedema after surgery or radiation treatment. She started her own private practice which grew in patients and became very successful. At that time Tonia also met her husband, Larry. She adopted his 2 young children, ages 5 and 6 and several years later, added a baby boy to the family. 26 | Fabulous 40rties | Spring 2012
The clinic was very demanding to run even with several therapists working with her but especially demanding were the emotional ups and downs. Watching so much pain and suffering started to really change Tonia’s understanding of life, the quality of life and health, and the importance of health and well being. Thinking she was ‘Super Woman’, Tonia strived to be the perfect therapist and business owner, wife and mother. But it soon proved to be too much. Completely exhausted, Tonia was involved in a serious car accident that changed her life forever. She could no longer use her left arm. Consequently she was not able to treat patients which eventually led to the practice closing. Over the years, Tonia developed additional symptoms from the trauma such as dizziness, vomiting, neck, back and shoulder pain, passing out and eventually fibromyalgia. Finally, after having lost significant quality of life for several years, the diagnosis was made: 3 severe herniations at the neck and 2 at the lower back. A combination of physical therapy, chiropractic, homeopathy, acupuncture, massage therapy and a splint for the jaw, finally started bringing some improvements to her health. Friends invited Tonia to join them on a trip to Costa Rica where she experienced major changes. During the trip, she started riding horses – which typically is not a good idea for someone with lower back issues – starting for 20 minutes and increasing to 2-3 hours per day. Tonia would take in the beautiful Costa Rican landscape in the resort that featured 3000 acres of lush green pastures, waterfalls, and tropical foliage – a prescription for healing body and soul. Back at home, Tonia surprised her husband with the idea of buying a farm in Costa Rica. Together, Tonia and Larry developed the land with its infrastructure, such as a major bridge, electricity, water, roads, and eventually building the main house and caretaker house. The entire project was a major
learning experience, but it helped that Tonia was familiar with Latin culture. She had to brush up on her Spanish with both terms used in construction and negotiation for business. During the entire 5 year process of flying back and forward from Florida to Costa Rica, Tonia stayed with a local Costa Rican family where three generations lived under one roof. They welcomed Tonia, cooked for her and shared their simple way of life. The entire experience was humbling and gave a fresh perspective on Tonia’s view for a happy life: Good health, good laughs and good food to share with friends, family, and nature. For several years, Tonia experienced an awakening by finding her true passion. She thrived in this serene tropical paradise, healed and reconnected with nature. “Quinta Colina Paula” has become Tonia and Larry’s paradise that they share along with their dogs, Atlas and Apollo. Tonia is currently writing a book on her experiences and memories of buying property and building in Costa Rica. Over the years, Tonia’s suffering with chronic pain and the stressful time spent building her paradise became intense. Searching for a way to take better care of her body, Tonia was determined to find a fun, exciting form of exercise that matched her spirit. On a whim, Tonia walked into a dance studio in Boynton Beach where she took a few private lessons. Soon after, Tonia was hooked on ballroom dancing. At first, her goals were to get back in shape, have fun and learn to dance a bit. To her surprise, Tonia really took to ballroom dancing and advanced further with private lessons and group classes. Her body was pain-free after every lesson, the weight came off and her body started to reshape itself. Tonia learned to stretch the limitations of her body and mind. She enjoyed meeting many people from different walks of life, with their own stories. Tonia realized that everyone has dreams but some of us do not believe that we can achieve them for a variety of reasons. She has watched people of all ages at the studio change, grow, and reach for their dreams. “People have come back to life with smiles on their faces every time they step on the dance floor. They forget about their problems or stresses in life. The world disappears and there is only dance,” Tonia explains.
With the encouragement and teachings from the instructors (some with world championship titles), the dancers, including Tonia, believe a bit more in themselves. Amazing as it sounds, the teachers are instrumental in transforming people to believe in themselves and trust that yes, they can do whatever they put their mind to, be whoever they want to be, and live the dream of dance. After half a year of dance classes and practice, Tonia competed at her first competition. She enjoyed it so much that she has been competing regularly in South Florida. “The world of ballroom dancing is fascinating,” says Tonia. “Everyone, professionals or amateurs, are totally supportive and encouraging of dancers, no matter what level. The costumes are amazing with custom-made gowns for smooth dances and cute outfits for rhythm dances. There is glitter and glamour, a kind of tribute to the nostalgia of days gone by.” During every competition the amateurs get an opportunity to see the professionals compete. Watching them float across the floor inspires Tonia to do more, be more, try more, enjoy more, and laugh more. The world of ballroom dancing has become a major blessing in Tonia’s life and many others. At a time when things seemed impossible, this change put Tonia on a new path with new possibilities and options to come. Currently, Tonia is ready to compete on a national level. If you are interested in sponsoring Tonia on a bronze, silver or gold level, please contact her at greatnessofyou@bellsouth.net. The future holds only more excitement and adventure for Tonia in many ways. Now she is opening a new business that will tie together her passion for people, fashion, health, beauty, and cultures. The design for a new Tuscan home is being created and her book featuring her Costa Rican adventures will be published in 2012. The Costa Rican paradise called “Quinta Colina Paula” is available for rentals. Visit VRBO.com, number 221962, for more information. Spring 2012 | Fabulous 40rties | 27

Madness!
Kathleen
Before
Kathleen at age 41 finds it hard to sit still for too long. Her husband Jarrett of 17 years and her son Jerry who is 10 years old are always busy doing something together as a family. Family plays a very important role in Kathleen’s life. They enjoy bicycling, traveling and spending time at the beach. She is constantly on the go with various activities. Kathleen finds time to design and sew many of her own outfits. She also spends time in the kitchen baking for her family. She was delighted with her new makeover and looks forward to her fabulous forties with her new look.
After
Kathleen’s hair color and cut was inspired by the actress Julianne Moore. Her skin tones and face shape are very similar so we wanted to bring out Kathleen’s inner celebrity. Starting with strong, bold, rich red auburn tones from roots to ends really brightens up her face. Keeping her length, we created long layers to give her more body and a style. Kathleen was then blown out with a round brush to add volume and bounce. Products used to create this look: KMS California & Moroccan Oil
Due to Kathleen’s fair foundation, we used an airbrushing technique, which leaves her face with a porcelain finish. Playing up the eye makeup, we used gold and coral shimmer tones with just a tad of smokey sexiness around the eye to add some drama. Using a matte bronzer and a rosy pink blush really accentuated her high cheek bones. To finish off the look, we used a bright fuchsia lip gloss that pulls her entire look together.

PETS
B
irds and nontraditional (“exotic”) pets such as rodents, rabbits, ferrets, turtles, and lizards have a tendency to hide their symptoms of illness until the problem has progressed to a significant degree. Also, most problems that we see in these animals have to do with some aspect of the husbandry being not quite adequate to meet all their needs. There are very few vaccines for these animals (with the exception of ferrets) and many infections will lay low, keeping somewhat subtle and hidden until the problem progresses. With all these factors taken into account, the best approach to keeping your bird or other nontraditional pet healthy is to get them examined regularly by a veterinarian. Choose a doctor that is very familiar with the way your animal is supposed to be: A thriving healthy and happy pet. Subtle abnormalities can be picked up and addressed earlier – when it is easier on you, your wallet, and your pet. Treat them earlier rather than when the problems progress to require advanced lifesaving care. Remember, a veterinarian with a special interest in your species of pet is able to make suggestions on a healthy environment and home care that could really make a difference in the health and happiness of your pet. Dr. Rolfe has dedicated her career to the care of birds and exotic pets. She is Board Certified in Avian Practice and has over 20 years of experience. Rich
“We’re going to have to lay you off.” Those are the words that many parents are hearing these days and when it happens, it does affect the family. For the past 7 months, I too have been searching for the next stop in my career and not only have I had to re-think my job search strategy, but I have also had to be cognizant of the way my husband and I discuss the situation while we are near the kids. Tiny ears definitely hear more, especially when the subject is very adult! As for our mature 11-year-old, thankfully she understands the situation and can curb her wants to only include her true needs. As for the 6-year-old, he is eager to tell everyone that “My mom was laid off in July” – yes, anyone that will listen. In stores, he continues to have his wish list and whines when he wants something, but then again, he is only 6. So for these past months, my husband and I have made a concerted effort to keep the kids lives and activities as constant as possible. Dance classes are possible and manageable thanks to an understanding studio and fundraising options for competitions. Religious school is attended for a variety of reasons, but mainly because it is important to our family. We have had to say “No” to new activities like sports. School field trips and participation in activities is decided on a one-by-one basis. I do wonder about the line at the bottom of the school forms that say something along the lines of no child will be excluded from activity for inability to pay. How do we get that classification? Also, purchasing supplies for the endless list of school projects becomes a struggle. When you are scraping your pennies, these few dollars here and there for paints and poster board add up fast. 30 | Fabulous 40rties | Spring 2012
Yes, we may be cash poor, but these last 7 months have taught our family more valuable lessons than ever expected. For example, couponing is not only a game we play, but a necessity for which we have become quite skilled. Selling our old clothes and miscellaneous stuff on eBay gives the kids a job of either photographing the items, or packaging up the sales. Family time is focused on board games, visits to the playground, art projects, trips to the veggie market, and weekly stops at the library. Movies, activities that do not offer a discounted coupon and expensive theme parks are not an option these days. Sure we miss them, but we do eat dinner every night as a family and watch movies from the library together. We have been known to fantasize about what we would do if we won the Power Ball! Of course, the kids rattle off what they would want, but also include items for Mom and Dad, and things we can do as a family like traveling. There are times when I want to scream! Like when I drive by panhandlers bearing signs: “Laid off, family to feed, need help.” Often I am the one that wants to roll down my window and say, “Yea, me too!” Watching mothers pay with food stamps and then drive off in an expensive car leaves us angry at the system. Having only a handful of affordable restaurant choices for our family makes eating at home the only option most nights. Thankfully, my husband’s business is thriving so we have his salary to rely on most months. Thankfully, we have generous and concerned family that can contribute to our finances when “stretched thin” is extreme. Thankfully, we have good friends that help us out with hand-me-down clothing and fun activities for the kids that we could not afford. At the end of the day, yes, being unemployed is a very stressful time physically and emotionally. The children feel our anxiety, ask about our progress, and try to chip in with their savings. Still we are richer and stronger for this bump in the road. In the future, I hope we all look back on this time, wonder how we ever got through it, keep up with our value shopping skills, and continue to appreciate the together-time we had when times were tough. The 11-year-old told me, “Mommy, I want you to get a job… but I also love having you at home.” Those are the words that get me through the hard days and push me to find a job to lessen the angst in our home. Having the time to cuddle, share a story, or just be together is often missed when working full days. May the future continue to brighten, not only for us, but also for the thousands of other families out there struggling like we are.

Clever Tips to reuse Paper towel or Toilet paper cardboard rolls Protect important documents or Preserve childrens’ artwork - Simply roll up your artwork, diplomas, marriage certificates, and other important documents and insert them in a paper towel tube. This will prevent creases and will keep the documents clean and dry. Before storing in a safe place, be sure to label the outside with a name, date, or document type. Start seedlings - Don’t go to the garden supply store to buy biodegradable starting pots for seedlings. Just use the cardboard tubes from paper towels and toilet paper. Cut each toilet paper tube into two pots, or each paper towel tube into four. Fill a tray with the cut cylinders packed against each

It’s time for spring-cleaning! Get ready to clear out the things you no longer use, while at the same time doing a deep cleaning of the entire house. Make a list - Decide what you would like to accomplish during this year’s spring-cleaning, and then group the like tasks, such as washing window screens and pressure washing your home. This will make it easier for you to go from one task to another without having to waste time wondering what to do next. Gather your supplies - Purchase the cleaners you will need and locate your bucket, sponges and mops to get ready to dive in! Focus on one task at a time - If you attempt to do too many things at once, you will only get lost and forget what you are doing. If you start in the kids’ room clean it from top to bottom including drawers and closets before you move on to the next room. Sell it - One persons trash is another persons treasure! Have a garage sale or drop off at your local consignment store any unwanted items to make a little cash to buy new home décor. Spring-cleaning is a lot of work, but when you are done your house will be fresh and renewed. Reward yourself with a relaxing spa day when you are done!

When you plant the seedlings, make sure to break down the side of the roll and make sure all the cardboard is completely buried Keep Christmas lights tidy - Spending more time untangling your Christmas lights than it takes to put them up? Make yuletide prep easier by wrapping your lights around a cardboard tube. Secure them with masking tape. Put small strands of lights or garlands inside cardboard tubes, and seal the ends of the tubes with masking tape.

Sex, Sleep and a New Baby… BY PATRICIA GRANATA EISNER
I
am the happy and proud mother of a nine month old baby girl. After five years of fertility treatments and a long bumpy road, I feel as though every prayer I have ever had has been answered. I am a working Mommy with a great job that I love, a beautiful healthy baby and a fun, loving and handsome husband. I have everything I want except one thing. Sleep. And without sleep, there is something I don’t want and that is sex. There I said it, and I bet if I asked a few of you (of course in the girlfriend privacy of shared secrets and over a cup of coffee) you may very well admit the same thing. But this is just between us girls, so let’s talk about it openly, shall we? Now don’t get me wrong, I have a husband that is as gorgeous and attractive, even more now than the first time I laid eyes on him. Now that I see him with my daughter, my urge to love him grows deeper and deeper. However, the only thing I want at the end of a long day is my pillow, the lights off and a quick goodnight kiss and a wish for pleasant dreams. Now that would rock my world. When did I become this person? When did I become so boring? Where are my high heels and late nights of flirting and fun? How and when did sleep become so much more attractive than the very attractive man that falls asleep next to me every night? In a recent study by David Dinges, the head of the Sleep and Chronobiology Laboratory at the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania, he determined that after two weeks people who were deprived sleep and only given six hours a night were as cognitively impaired at small and simple tasks as those who were legally drunk. So aside from yawning through work, forgetting just about everything that is not written on my to do list and finding enough energy to workout, maintain a household and be a good Mommy, I am walking around with a brain that functions as though it is four margaritas deep.
And now that my daughter is nine months old and my husband and I have surfaced from the fog of middle of the night feedings, people are starting to ask us if we are working on number two. As much as I pray for the Immaculate Conception to occur, I know I am not that lucky or holy so, I give everyone the same answer, “That would involve my husband and I to be awake, in the same room at the same time, for longer than three minutes.” And yes, I do miss my husband and those quiet shared times together, but my body and mind 8 times out of ten win the war and fall deeply into sleep before much else can occur between us.
“I have everything I want, except one thing.Sleep.”
No wonder all I want to do is close my eyes at the end of the day. 32 | Fabulous 40rties | Spring 2012
My only consolation in all of this is that like all phases in our lives this too will pass. Our baby girl will turn into a teenager and sleep longer than we do. And perhaps for this small time in our lives we will be tired together and our intimacy will come in the form of shared misery and exhaustion and laughing at how our lack of sleep makes us forget and do things like lock ourselves out of the house or forget our phones at the post office. All of which have happened. And yes at the end of the day, as much as I yawn and think of just closing my eyes, I am not complaining, my husband is the one I get to share this beautiful, amazing time with. He is the one who is just as excited about our daughter trying new foods, splashing in her bath and sleeping through the night. Those are the kinds of things that make me love him even more, and eventually when I get some rest, I promise I will show him how much.
Don’t forget…what comes around goes around, So don’t be a fool and fall for a prank! April Fools is a special holiday about pranking your friends and family and fooling the ones you love. Practical jokes should be done in good fun and not meant to hurt anyone. The best jokes are the clever ones where everyone laughs, especially the person who had the joke played on them. Go ahead…try a prank (or two) on April Fools Day! • If you’re the last one out of the office, empty multiple packs of Jell-O or Gelatin into the toilets - the result the next morning will be fun! • The old sticker-on-the-back routine of the ‘Kick Me’ variety is not big and it certainly isn’t clever - but it’s still funny. • Place Cling-film over the toilet seat - an old prank but a good one! • Find all the balls in your house, even small plastic ones like ping pong balls or practice golf balls, and place them in the kitchen cupboards. The next person to open the cupboards will get a shower of balls! • With the water faucet turned off, place a rubber band around the handle of the spray nozzle (the one with the hose) and when the next person comes up to the sink and turns the water on, they get soaked by your trap.
