SUL TEVERE Hollywood on the Tiber
C’è stato un tempo, e forse ci sarà ancora, in cui il centro del mondo cinematografico non era la California, non era Hollywood, ma Roma. Gli Studios di Cinecittà erano amati dai registi statunitensi tanto, se non di più, che da quelli italiani. La dolce vita romana era un obbligo sia sul set che per le vie del centro. I bar di Via Veneto pullulavano di grandi star vestite delle sofisticate creazioni di Fernanda Gattinoni. Anita Ekberg, Kim Novak, Lana Turner, Anna Magnani splendevano tutte nella luce dei flash degli amati e odiati paparazzi. Proprio dal passato e sul possibile futuro del cinema italiano ruota la settima edizione del Festival internazionale del film di Roma. Sotto la direzione artistica di Marco Müller, già direttore artistico della Mostra internazionale d’arte cinematografica di Venezia, dal 9 al 17 novembre, sono innumerevoli le prime visioni che saranno selezionate per rendere omaggio universale al cinema di tutto il mondo. Inoltre, dal 14 al 18 novembre, nel centro della Capitale saranno organizzati il Mercato Internazionale del Film di Roma e la Fabbrica dei progetti, spazi pensati e dedicati ai maestri e agli emergenti delle industry di tutto il mondo. Fellini, parlando di Roma, definiva Cinecittà come “un posto da guardare con rispetto, perché dietro al suo recinto di mura gli artisti dotati e ispirati sognavano per tutti noi”. Dunque la possibilità di sognare una nuova epoca d’oro del cinema italiano non è destinata a scomparire, perché dove c’è creatività e sogno lì è l’Italia. Da sempre.

Cinecittà Studios were loved by American filmmakers as much, if not more, than by the Italians. Roman “dolce vita” was a must both on the set and in the streets of the city centre. The bars of Via Veneto swarmed by big stars dressed of sophisticated creations of Fernanda Gattinoni. Anita Ekberg, Kim Novak, Lana Turner, Anna Magnani, were gleaming in the light of the flash of the loved and hated paparazzi. Just from the past and toward the possible future of Italian cinema rotates the seventh edition of the Rome film Festival. Under the ar tistic direction of Marco Müller, previous ar tistic director of the Mostra internazionale d'Arte cinematografica di Venezia, from 9 to 17 November, are countless premieres that will be selected to pay an universal tribute to the cinema of all around the world. In addition, from November 14 to 18, in the Centre of the Eternal City will be organized The Business Street and the New Cinema Network, spaces designed and dedicated to both the masters and to the emerging figures of the industry in the international scenario. Speaking in Rome, Fellini used to say that, Cinecittà was “a place to look at with respect, because behind its walled enclosure, inspired and visionary ar tists dreamed for us all”. Therefore the oppor tunity to dream of a new golden age of Italian cinema is not destined to disappear, because where there's creativity and dreaming there is Italy. As it has always been.

Dopo una ristrutturazione costata alla nuova proprietà oltre 2 milioni di sterline, il più famoso ristorante e nightclub di Chelsea è risorto dalle proprie ceneri come un'araba fenice ed è destinato a diventare, ancora una volta, il luogo più hot da vedere e in cui farsi visti, di tutta Londra. A partire dal 17 Ottobre, quella che a Chelsea, e non solo, è considerata una vera istituzione, verrà inaugurata alla presenza di un parterre di ospiti indiscutibilmente glamour con una serie di eventi progettati per rappresentare il maggiore polo di attrazione della vita notturna londinese. Barbarella vuole rappresentare il punto di incontro tra uno stile decadente, il lusso ed un comfort totalmente rilassato che permetterà agli ospiti di sentirsi completamente a casa. Ma non è tutto. Ogni sera il ristorante, che conta solo 100 coperti, offrirà una miscela di sapori classici accanto ad una selezione di cocktail unici ed innovativi e, a seguire, si trasformerà in una discoteca dove i migliori DJ della città intratterranno gli ospiti nello spirito Barbarella. La Frick Collection è un museo a Midtown Manhattan nei pressi di Central Park ubicato nella Henry Clay Frick House, ex residenza del magnate dell'acciaio Henry Clay Frick, progettata dall'architetto Thomas Hastings e costruita fra il 1913 ed 1914. La Frick Collection è uno dei più importanti piccoli musei degli Stati Uniti e comprende una notevole collezione di dipinti di grandi maestri allestita in sedici gallerie tematiche in cui i quadri sono raggruppati secondo criteri decisi dal suo donatore. Come sua consuetudine anche quest'autunno il Frick ospita un'immensa serie di capolavori. Per la prima volta, infatti, il Courtauld Institute of Art, fondato a Londra nel 1932 e impegnato nello studio della storia dell'arte, ha dato al Frick l'opportunità di esibire cinquantotto dipinti della sua famosissima raccolta. I capolavori in prestito al Frick annoverano artisti ammirati in tutta Europa a partire dal Medioevo per arrivare fino all'inizio del XX secolo. The Frick Collection is an art museum located in Midtown Manhattan near Central Park in New York. It is located in the Henry Clay Frick House, former residence of steel magnate Henry Clay Frick, which was designed by the architect Thomas Hastings and built between 1913 and 1914. The Frick Collection is one of the most important small museums of the United States and includes a remarkable collection of paintings by great masters held in sixteen thematic galleries where the paintings are grouped according to criteria decided by the donor. As a custom to its history, the Frick is once again welcoming an immense series of masterwork to be displayed this fall in New York. For the first time the Courtauld Institute of Art, founded in 1932 in London and committed to the study of art history, has allowed the Frick the opportunity to exhibit fifty-eight drawings from its notorious collected works. Mauro, fotografo professionista con una passione per gli orologi, un po' per gioco un po' per sfida comincia a guardare il mondo attraverso l'obiettivo di un iPhone e comincia a fotografare orologi, soprattutto Rolex, dando vita ad immagini stupende, veri manifesti dell'amore per la tecnica e l'estetica orologiera. E non solo. Perché è come un viaggio a ritroso nel tempo, all'inizio della storia della fotografia, quando la bellezza e la qualità della foto dipendevano non tanto dalla macchina quanto dall'abilità di chi la realizzava. La pipa è uno strumento antichissimo e la sua costruzione più remota è legata a fini propiziatori. L’uomo primitivo, impossessatosi del fuoco, notò che qualunque cosa, una volta scagliata in aria, ricadeva inesorabilmente in terra ad eccezione del fumo. Ciò che veniva bruciato generava fumo e il fumo, invece di cadere in giù, si innalzava verso il cielo e, poiché la maggior parte dei fenomeni inspiegabili e terrificanti provenivano dal cielo, ne attribuì la causa a divinità che sovrastavano la sfera terrestre. Quindi il fumo che si elevava fino a perdersi nell’aria, venne considerato il canale migliore per comunicare con le divinità, in quanto legava idealmente il terreno al divino. The pipe is a very ancient tool and its earliest construction is tied to propitiatory rites. Primitive man, after having possessed fire, noticed that no matter what, once hurled into the air fell relentlessly on earth except for the smoke. What was burned generated smoke and smoking, instead of falling down, was skyward and, since most of the unexplained and terrifying phenomena came from heaven, they attributed the cause of smoke to gods above the terrestrial sphere. Therefore the smoke that you raised up and got lost in the air, was considered the best channel to communicate with the gods, because it ideally tied-up earth and heaven. Thus was born the progenitor of the current pipe. Over the millennia it has undergone significant changes and still, despite the pleasure of tasting tobacco has supplanted the ritual aspect, something of the latter remained dormant in modern pipe smoker. Lo stesso discorso vale per l’architettura del movimento, fatta su misura perché il meccanismo dei pannelli apri e chiudi andasse ad inficiare solo su questa e non sulla già complessa cassa. Avendo a che fare, però, con due tra i più autorevoli maestri, è naturale aspettarsi da Chapter Three Reveal una notevole precisione, data dalla regolazione a scappamento Straumann del movimento, caratterizzato da un’ancora leggera ed efficiente, con spirale a curva terminale Breguet per un sempre miglior isocronismo, una migliore costante del tempo. Dal 2008 ad oggi la Maîtres du Temps di Steven Holtzmann s’impegna nell’unire i maggiori talenti dell’alta orologeria per produrre e sviluppare dei segnatempo che siano sempre più entusiasmanti sia sul profilo puramente tecnico che su quello estetico. Ognuno dei tre capitoli è unico, perché ogni orologio rispecchia l’arte dei maestri che hanno contribuito a crearlo. Rispettando e tramandando tutti i valori dell’alta orologeria, Maîtres du Temps riesce a far vivere e rivivere nel tempo la grande arte artigiana dei maestri. This indication is of particular benefit when using the second time zone, which is why it is revealed at the same time, as it enables the user to keep track of the hour at home and to know at a glance if it is day or night there. These time zone and day/night rollers are permanently synchronized with each other and can adjust both forwards and backwards in time through the crown and to maximize legibility, the second time zone at the bottom of the dial is displayed on two separate rollers. Using two rollers instead of one means that only six numbers have to be displayed around the circumference of each roller, enabling them to be twice as large, so twice as easy to read. Kari Voutilainen and Andreas Strehler developed the movement from scratch. It took them over three years but enabled the rollers to be integrated to the caliber rather than added as a more space-consuming module. Building this functionality into the movement rather than adding to the complexity of the case maximizes both reliability and use of space. As might be expected from two of the world’s best watchmakers, rich functionality and stylish good looks were not enough: Chapter Three Reveal should also be an accurate timekeeper. To that end, the movement is regulated by a Straumann escapement, featuring a lightweight energy-efficient escape lever and balance spring with an isochronism-improving Breguet overcoil. Since 2008 Maîtres du Temps, founded by Steven Holtzman, brings together teams of the world’s most talented master watchmakers to develop exclusive, technically exciting timepieces. Each of the three chapters is unique because each watch brings to the table the ideas, the style, and the approach of the master watchmakes who made it. Respecting and passing the values of high watchmaking to the next generation of masters, Maîtres du Temps aims to keep alive the craft and the talent of the most experienced master watchmakers, the only ones who can give birth to amazing machines only through chinetics. La leggenda narra che la moglie di un pilota avesse dipinto segretamente con una goccia di smalto per unghie un pulsante del cronografo di suo marito, affinché questi si ricordasse di lei quando era lontano impegnato in missioni di guerra e che quel cronografo fosse un Hanhart. Dal 1939 il pulsante rosso, molto suggestivo, è il segno distintivo del marchio che decise di applicarlo sul pulsante del reset per scongiurare che il pilota, premendolo inavvertitamente, cancellasse i tempi di navigazione rilevanti e, proprio in ricordo di quella leggenda, quest'anno durante la fiera di Basilea, la Maison ha donato ad ogni signora che ha visitato lo stand, un sacchetto contenente un flaconcino di smalto rosso. Legend has it that a young pilot, as he was putting on his Hanhart watch one morning, discovered that his wife had painted one of the buttons with red nail varnish so that he would always think of her and return home safe and sound. This distinctive red button became the trademark feature of the watch brand from 1939 onwards. The power reserve indicator on the back has an autonomy of 39 hours and has to be wound by the screw down crown when the indicator approaches the red zone. ZR012 is water resistant to 30 ATM.

Il 2012 è stato l'anno di lancio dello ZR012. Verranno realizzate solo due serie di questo esperimento e ciascuna sarà realizzata in soli 12 pezzi. Il 2012 è l'anno dello Zirconio mentre il 2013 sarà l'anno del RG012 ovvero di 12 pezzi in oro rosso. In tutto il mondo, quindi, si potranno trovare complessivamente solo 24 orologi ispirati ai motori rotativi Wankel. Il prezzo di vendita è di circa 100 mila euro e, stando alle dichiarazioni dei diretti interessati, si raggiungerà il break even solo dopo aver venduto il 24esimo esemplare. E a proposito di vendita: proprio per sovvertire tutti i paradigmi commerciali, lo ZR012 può essere acquistato solo in due modi. Il primo è online. In questo caso l'ordine è confermato con il versamento di un deposito di circa 30mila euro e, a ricezione del saldo, l'orologio sarà consegnato attraverso un corriere internazionale. L'alternativa, qualora l'interessato volesse prima vederlo “live”, è quella di recarsi a Ginevra e incontrare Ian Skellern, giornalista ed esperto di orologi a cui Max e Felix hanno dato mandato di incontrare potenziali clienti e mostrare la loro creazione.

What drove you to re-launch a new version of the original Oktopus launched in 2009? Having completed the complex development of the Reef and acquired unequalled in-house expertise, we had the opportunity to consider what our definition of a contemporary dive watch and dive instrument could be and we set about reconstructing the Oktopus family What is the main characteristic of Oktopus II? The case construction is fascinating. The Oktopus II features an innovative five-part case construction which ensures absolute water resistance and excellent anti-corrosive protection given by the finest materials employed, such as gold, titanium and ceramic. The case features a central movement chamber and four case parts assembled together by a the fixed bezel . The four case parts at three, six, nine and twelve o’clock, are built separately from the movement chamber and are used to attach the strap as well as to hold the attachable instrument.

Abbiamo sviluppato una tecnica speciale per ottenere questo risultato, in quanto il taglio laser regolare non era possibile a causa del calore. Le ruote si sarebbero piegate e non avrebbe funzionato. Con il nostro fornitore abbiamo dovuto superare questo problema. Il design del movimento scheletrato è stato creato anche in modo di somigliare ad un polipo con i tentacoli a ore 3 e a ore 9, e l'aspetto della grande data il più simile possibile ai due occhi.

A fixed Bezel on a dive watch? Indeed. This is purely intentional decision as all the information (time spent submersed) traditionally measured by a turning bezel is available in the Reef. No one dives without a computer; no one relies on a rotating bezel. LINDE WERDELIN’s philosophy that analogue is the best way to read time; digital is how you assimilate technical details is proved once again. What was the biggest challenge? In the movement it was extremely complicated to do the date-wheels. They are so thin. I wanted them to be skeletonized. We actually had to develop a special technique to achieve this result, because the regular laser cutting wasn’t possible due to heat. The date wheels would bend and wouldn’t work. With our supplier we had to overcome that problem. The skeletonized design of the movement was also created so that it resembles an octopus with arms from 3 to 9 o’clock, and the big date look like its eyes.

Negoziare un orologio vintage con Bob Maron è come fare a braccio di ferro con un diavolo della Tasmania. Difficile che siate voi a vincere. Un cliente negli uffici di Thousand Oaks - un complesso tentacolare fortemente vigilato nella California del nord – sta scoprendo a sue spese che non è facile giocarsela con Maron. Sono seduti alla scrivania di Bob, che di per sé è una rarità, perché Maron preferisce fare affari in modo più informale, quasi sempre seduti sul divano beige e giallo B & B Italia Carlo nel suo ufficio privato. Ha un modo perturbante di mettere a proprio agio chiunque, che stia cercando di venderti un orologio o di comprarne uno da te ad un prezzo per cui domani ti morderai i gomiti. Non è il capo perché è fortunato. Conosce il gioco e sa condurlo. Bob Maron sta agli orologi da collezione come Garry Kasparov sta agli scacchi. Maron stringe la mano al suo cliente che si allaccia al polso un Patek 5004P intascando un assegno di importo sconosciuto. Negotiating a vintage watch deal with Bob Maron is like arm-wrestling with a Tasmanian devil. It's probably not going to end well for you. A visitor to Maron's office in Thousand Oaks—a sprawling and heavily guarded compound in northern California—is finding out the hard way that Maron can't be easily pushed around. They're sitting around Maron's desk, which is a rarity. Maron prefers to do business in a more informal setting, on the beige and yellow low-slung B&B Italia Charles sofa in his private office. The buyer, who prefers not to be named, is waving around a Patek 5016 tourbillon perpetual minute repeater with a particularly rare and exotic dial. Maron sold him this very watch six years ago for close to $300,000. Today, Maron wants to buy it back for$450,000. But it's not going to be that easy. It's never that easy. The customer's heard rumors that Maron has already been shopping the watch around online, for considerably more money. Also, Maron isn't offering a check for $450,000. He's offering a trade. The customer threatens to put the watch on auction, but Maron doesn't blink. He seems calm and relaxed, despite having consumed seven full cups of green tea already (and it's barely 1pm). If he's nervous about blowing this deal, he doesn't show it. He knows that one way or the other, he will get his watch. ‘All roads lead to this office,’ he says with a smile. Ask Maron what he does for a living, and he won't settle for a pedestrian job description like watch dealer. ‘I'm known for finding and selling the rarest, most important, most expensive, most complicated watches in the world,’ he says. He specializes in brands like Rolex and Patek, valued in a price range that's typically more than most people would spend on a house. He has become a self-made superstar in an industry where there are very few household names, defying all odds by specializing in antiquated devices that the Times of London once (erroneously) dismissed as ‘going the same way as the sundial.’ Part of the reason for his success, aside from his encyclopedic knowledge of vintage watches, is his personality. Maron is funny and charming; a consummate salesman. He'll ask you for the time, and then smile in a way that makes you feel foolish for checking your cellphone. He has an uncanny way of putting anybody at ease, whether he's trying to sell you a watch or buy one from you at a price that you may be kicking yourself for tomorrow. He is not the master because he's lucky. He knows the game, and how to play it. Bob Maron is to collectible watches what Garry Kasparov is to chess. Maron shakes hands with his customer, who straps a Patek 5004P onto his wrist and slips a check for an undisclosed sum into his pocket. He caved to all of Maron's demands, but he doesn't feel like he got bamboozled. ‘Where else can I walk into that kind of circus and walk out with $150,000 profit and another piece unique of this caliber?’ he says, proudly flashing the bright pink dial on his wrist. Over a span of fifteen years buying watches from Maron—his first was an IWC Destriero Scafusia in Rose Gold, which he bought for $150,000—he's amassed a collection worth over one million dollars. ‘Sure, I leave a bit too much on the table with that son of a bitch,’ he says with a chuckle. ‘But you gotta love the way he does things.’ Back in Maron's office, it's controlled chaos. A Bollywood actor is sifting through bins of Vintage Rolex watches at the sofa, randomly holding up watches and asking for a price. Maron ignores him, alternating between a phone call with an administrator at his daughter’s school—he's offering to sponsor a dunk tank and a donut concession for the school carnival—and debating an eBay offer with Rob Spayne, Maron's Sales and Marketing Manager. ‘$42,000, sell down to thirty-eight, ‘Maron shouts at Spayne, and then returns to his phone conversation. After a spirited, expletive-filled negotiation with the Bollywood actor, they agree on a price and hug. ‘I hate him,’ the actor says of Maron, walking out with his newly-acquired watch. ‘I truly hate him, as only God knows. But I love him too and he is my brother.’ Maron's love affair with rare and important timepieces began in 1982, while he was a student at the prestigious Harvard University, pursuing a degree in Humanities. During a school break visit to his native Chicago, he walked into the Wabash Street store of legendary jeweler Howard Frum. ‘I bought a Rolex bubbleback, which I subsequently re-sold on a trip to Los Angeles a few weeks later,’ Maron recalls. ‘When I realized that I could make more money buying Rolexes than working a regular job, I went back to Harvard and he generously allowed me to take ten more watches on consignment.’ He sold nine of them in less than a week. Maron went on to study at UCLA Law School in the early 1990’s, eventually earning his law degree in 1995. Along the way, he partially financed his law school education by continuing to buy and sell wristwatches, which now included brands such as Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet. After graduating, Maron dutifully interviewed with various law firms to become a first-year associate. But his heart and passions belonged elsewhere, and despite his family’s objections, he decided to go into business for himself as a full-time dealer of fine wristwatches. A great watch dealer isn't born overnight. For Maron, it was a gradual process of discovering his

I had no money, but I had good credit.’ He soon sold the watch for a profit, and it was that sale that gave him the confidence to make the leap into the major leagues of the watch industry. ‘I thought, if I'm going to do this and make a career out of it, not only do I want to deal in interesting watches, I want to deal with interesting people,’ Maron says. With just a simple philosophy to guide him—’the bigger lures you throw out, the bigger lures you catch’—he built an empire. Fifteen years ago, when Maron was still in the infancy of his career, the American marketplace for vintage wrist and pocket watches was primarily controlled by a handful of veteran watch dealers whose marketing efforts were mostly confined to advertising in watch magazines and mailing out printed catalogues. As an early adapter and innovator, Maron recognized the immense potential of the Internet and began posting watches for sale on-line at websites such as Watchnet.com, and later on his own website, Maron.com. Aside from using the Internet to cultivate an international clientele, Maron also prides himself on being one of the first watch dealer to focus attention on the rarity and importance of dials, their condition, and being among the first to recognize and support the potential rarity of certain models of Patek Philippe and Rolex wristwatches. Although Maron’s customers during the 1990’s were primarily focused on acquiring modern pre-owned Patek and Rolex watches, he made a concerted effort to educate his clients and fellow dealers on the rarity and desirability of certain models. To become an expert on the watches he was focusing on, he began actively acquiring books, vintage advertisements, and auction catalogues–a massive collection which now takes up an entire room in his spacious offices. Over the years, his client base has grown from private collectors to a wide array of celebrities and business people, a veritable ‘who's who’ of the world's rich and influential. He approaches the hobby like it's a sport, and that's what makes it exciting for all of us.’ Sheen says that before offering Maron the job on Anger Management, he made him agree to one condition. ‘(Maron) can keep working on the show as long as he doesn’t give up the watch trade,’ Sheen says. Sheen has good reason to want Maron to keep his day job. Maron hasn't just been selling him watches for almost a decade; he's occasionally helped recover watches when they've ‘disappeared.’ When Sheen tore apart his room at the Plaza Hotel in New York City in 2010, looking for his cherished $165,000 Patek Philippe Ref. 5970 watch that he accused adult film performer Capri Anderson of stealing, it was Maron who helped him find a replacement. Maron also sold him the original, and was ‘partying’ with Sheen the night before it disappeared. ‘He partied a little harder than me,’ Maron admits. ‘Dinner turned into drinks turned into four in the morning. But I skipped out on dinner the next night. Charlie's blamed me for his 5970 disappearing. He said, 'If you'd been with me, you wouldn't have let me go up to the room with the watch on my wrist.' Which is true, by the way.’ Fortunately for Sheen, Maron has no intention of abandoning his watch business for Hollywood glory anytime soon. Certainly not now, when he's become more influential in the industry than ever before. ‘I like to see myself as a market maker,’ he says. ‘To be a market maker, you need to have your finger on the pulse of what's happening in this market, so that you can anticipate future trends.’ He claims to be significantly responsible for the recent trend in vintage Rolex Day Dates from the late 60s up to the late 70s. But it didn't come easy. It required ‘going all over the world and buying up large inventories of these watches, putting them in auctions, educating the public, and selling them to my most important customers.’ It's that kind of legwork that separates the men from the boys; the casual watch collector from the true vintage watch

He's flown to Las Vegas on his wedding anniversary, with his wife in tow, to wine and dine an Italian race car driver with a Patek 130 that he wasn't sure he wanted to sell. (‘I ended up getting the watch,’ Maron says.) He's driven out to a ‘hippie commune’ in Joshua Tree National Park to inspect a rare Patek watch before a Christie's inspector could show up. (‘I was part of a drum circle,’ he says. ‘I left with the watch.’) In one of his favorite tales, Maron made a successful bid on eBay to buy a vintage Patek World Time for just $15,000— ‘a tenth of it's actual value.’ But just a few hours later, he says, the seller called him and claimed, ‘Listen, I've gotten fifty emails with better offers. I think I might've sold the watch for too cheap.’ Maron tried to reason with him, but the counter-offers were too tempting. ‘He finally says to me, 'Here's the deal. I want $50,000 for the watch. And I'll only sell it to you if you can get to Palm Springs by 5pm with a cashier's check.'’ It was, to say the least, an impossible request. It was 3:30pm, and Maron's office was a two and a half hour car ride away from Palm Springs. Maron immediately picked up the phone and made arrangements to hire a helicopter. Even that was cutting it close—he couldn't make it to the airport in time to make the hour trip down to Palm Springs. ‘I convinced the pilot to land in our parking lot in Thousand Oaks,’ Maron says. ‘I had the cashier's check in my hand. Oh, and it was a Wednesday night, which is date night with my wife, so she was with me. The pilot was worried, because he doesn't want to get arrested for landing illegally in a place not sanctioned for commercial aircraft. He brought the helicopter down in an empty lot a few blocks over from our office, and we ran into the helicopter and he took off.’ They made it to Palm Springs with literally minutes to spare. ‘I handed him the check,’ Maron says. ‘He handed me the watch. It was amazing.’ Most watch dealers prefer to do business without as much nail-biting tension or beat-the-clock races. But most watch dealers aren't Bob Maron. You just have to look into his eyes to realize that Maron isn't another passive watch scholar who sits in dark offices and obsesses over rare dials. ‘I thrive on excitement,’ Maron says. Before he can even finish that sentence, he's back on the phone, loudly negotiating another deal with a vintage watch collector, ready at a moment's notice to jump into a helicopter and get that perfect watch before anybody else. And that's why Bob Maron is unstoppable.

Spesso le migliori case orologiere nascono dall’unione di due orologiai, l’uno con caratteristiche in grado di compensare l’altro. Così è stato anche per Georges Dubey e René Schaldenbrand, amici sin dall’infanzia nella culla orologiera di Neuchâtel. Georges Dubey dedica tutta la sua vita all’orologeria: il talento, l’amore e la dedizione per il suo lavoro lo portano in breve tempo a farsi un nome come maestro orologiaio e a ricevere l’incarico di insegnante nella famosa scuola “Technicum” di La Chaux-de-Fonds. René Schaldenbrand è, invece, un giovane imprenditore ben conosciuto nell’industria orologiera e, sin da subito, intuisce il grande potenziale insito nell’impresa che lui e Georges Dubey decidono di avviare. Nel 1946 fondano infatti il marchio Dubey & Schaldenbrand. Il genio meccanico di Dubey permette l’invenzione e il brevetto internazionale di numerosi dispositivi tecnici per rendere i loro segnatempo sempre più affidabili e precisi. Il più famoso è quello dell’Index Mobile, con cui rivoluzionano il mondo dei cronografi. L’Index Mobile è, infatti, un dispositivo che simula la funzione rattrapante e consente di arrestare, anche se al massimo per un minuto rispetto al cronografo sdoppiante, una delle due lancette dei secondi, premendo un pulsante coassiale alla corona di carica. Una volta rilasciato il pulsante, poi, le due lancette si riallineano l’una sull’altra. Merito di tutto questo è una sottile molla a spirale visibile dal lato quadrante, che rende solidali le due lancette cronografiche al rilascio del pulsante dello sdoppiante, quando una viene momentaneamente fermata. L’effetto della molla a spirale permette il successivo riallineamento senza grandi congegni meccanici da dover fare funzionare. Il movimento base, invece, subisce poche modifiche a livello di ruote di comando, tanto che il sistema Index Mobile può essere adattato su differenti calibri cronografi

Often the finest watchmaking manufactures are born from the union of two watchmakers, with features that can compensate each other. So it was for Georges Dubey and RenÊ Schaldenbrand, friends since childhood in Neuchâtel, the cradle of watchmaking. Georges Dubey devotes his whole life to watchmaking: talent, love and dedication to his work led him quickly to make a name as master watchmaker and to gain the role of teacher inthe famous "Technicum" school in La Chaux-de-Fonds. On the other hand RenÊ Schaldenbrand is a young entrepreneur wellknown in the watchmaking industry and, since the very beginning, feels the great potential of the enterprise that he and Georges Dubey decided to start up together. In 1946 the two founded the trademark Dubey & Schaldenbrand. The mechanical genius of Dubey allows the invention and the international patent of several technical devices to make their timepieces increasingly reliable and precise. The most famous is that of Index Mobile, with which the revolutionize the world of chronographs. The Index Mobile is, in fact, a device that simulates the split seconds function and stops, even if for no more than a minute compared to the double chronograph, one of the two seconds hands, pressing a coaxial button on the winding crown. Once the button is released the two hands realign one on top of the other. Credit for this is due to a thin spiral spring side dial, which makes solidarity the two chronograph hands at the time of the release of the button when it is momentarily stopped. The effect of the spiral spring allows the realignment without the engagement of great mechanical devices. The basic movement, however, undergoes very few changes at the level of the command wheel, so that the Index Mobile system can be adapted to different calibers of pre-existing chronographs. Trattandosi comunque di cronografi in un certo senso economici, spesso molti di quelli prodotti hanno cassa placcata in oro, ma non mancano esempi di modelli interamente in acciaio oppure in oro a 18 carati. Dei tre cronografi visibili in queste pagine, il solo Baume & Mercier ha la cassa in oro a 18 carati, gli altri sono placcati oro. Le casse hanno in genere diametro di 36/37 mm con forme molto classiche. I quadranti, anch’essi di aspetto tipico dell’epoca, sono ricchi di scale e dai colori di base per lo più argentati. La funzione sdoppiante veniva attuata con la pressione del pulsante coassiale alla corona, pressione che doveva essere mantenuta durante la lettura della misurazione effettuata. Per ottenere il riallineamento delle due lancette dei secondi crono, poi, bastava rilasciare il pulsante. Passato il minuto, se non si rilasciava il pulsante il cronografo si fermava. I movimenti storicamente utilizzati con il brevetto Index Mobile di Dubey & Schaldenbrand sono il Valjoux (più raro da trovare), il Landeron (molto frequente, perché più economico già in partenza) e il Venus (rarissimo). The dials, which are very typical of the time in their appearance, are full of scales and basic colors are mostly silvery. Uno di questi, oltre alla bussola, era l’orologio, utile per il calcolo della longitudine se usato insieme a un sestante. La Breitling, però, andò oltre ed offrì ai piloti uno strumento a tutto tondo, che grazie alla presenza di un regolo calcolatore periferico poteva servire per tutta una serie di operazioni che erano un vero e proprio pane quotidiano per ogni pilota. Un regolo calcolatore permetteva di fare moltiplicazioni, divisioni e proporzioni, quindi consentiva di calcolare tempi di percorrenza in volo, autonomia rispetto al consumo di carburante e mille altre cose utili durante il volo. Anche per questo, caso unico nella produzione della casa coronata, se per tutti gli altri modelli gli ultimi aumenti del listino hanno portato a ritocchi del 10%, per il solo Deepsea l’aumento è stato del 18,3 %, sicuramente anche per i costi di produzione molto elevati. Come gli altri Rolex di ultima generazione, troviamo l’incisione del seriale sull’anello che circonda il quadrante (il rehaut), che però per lo spessore del vetro è decisamente poco leggibile e, aspetto molto sorprendente, considerato che nella cassa mancano i punzoni del seriale, l’anello è staccabile dalla carrure e quindi ipoteticamente intercambiabile con altri di differenti esemplari. I cultori del marchio, nonché attenti esaminatori di ogni possibile variante introdotta sui quadranti, a partire dalla nascita del modello nel 2008, hanno già individuato ben 3 serie del Deepsea, subito ribattezzate Mark I, Mark II e Mark III. La corona Rolex: nel Mark I l’ovale è perfettamente arrotondato, nel Mark II ha i margini praticamente a punta, mentre nel Mark III è leggermente meno a punta. La scritta Rolex: cambiano leggermente i font e gli spessori della stampa un po’ in tutte le lettere. Scritta Deepsea: qui compaiono le prime differenze veramente marcate. Nel Mark I la scritta ha le grazie, la barretta centrale delle “E” è lunga e la “S” ha una forma particolare. Nel Mark II la grafica perde le grazie, la “E” ha la barretta intermedia corta e la “S” ha forma differente. Nel Mark III, invece, si ha quasi una via di mezzo, tornano le grazie, la “E” ha la barretta corta e la “S” ha forma classica. Trattino SeaDweller: nei passaggi di Mark è lungo, corto, intermedio. Profondità in piedi (ft): i font, le distanze tra lettere e i trattini di separazione dai metri sono tutti differenti. Infine la scritta Swiss Made: la Rolex sembra giocare a mischiare le carte, utilizzando font e grafica ogni volta di Mark differenti rispetto alle altre scritte presenti sui quadranti. Nel Mark I la “S” è diversa da quella di Deepsea, ma quasi uguale a quelle di Deepsea utilizzate nei Mark II e III, e la “E” ha la barretta centrale corta (mentre in Deepsea è lunga) ed è praticamente uguale a quella in Deepsea del Mark II. Nel Mark II “S” e “E” sembrano simili a quelle delle altre scritte del Mark III. Nel Mark III, infine, torna la “S” di Deepsea Mark I e la “E” ha la barretta centrale corta.

deepsea Per quanto riguarda il valore di mercato, ad oggi non si vedono particolari differenze di quotazioni tra i diversi Mark. Ma ragionando in prospettiva e facendo altri riferimenti restando sempre in casa Rolex, come per il raro seriale R della referenza 16520 Daytona o per il seriale Y del 16610LV Fat Four, non sarebbe da meravigliarsi se tra qualche anno il primo seriale M del Mark I dovesse avere quotazioni superiori. As far as the market value is concerned, as per today we don't see particular differences in prices between different Mark. But thinking ahead and taking as example other Rolex references, as for the rare serial R of Ref. 16520 Daytona or serial Y 16610LV Fat Four, it wouldn't be surprising if in a few years the first serial M of the first Mark should have higher prices.
