Project 2024 9Th hole Drainage
Greetings to all Cotswold residents and members. As most of you will be aware we recently undertook a massive restoration project in terms of the drainage on the 9th fairway. For many years this fairway has posed a problem in the wet summer months, which often resulted in the fairway being closed for play, which really detracted from the golfing experience at Cotswold. The CLC and CDMA
board therefore made the decision to upgrade the drainage system and below is a recap of what the project entailed:
The project was divided into three main tasks namely excavation, the laying of the new drainage and then back filling and reestablishment of the playing surface. The excavation proved to be a little tougher than expected with the wet and muddy
underlying soil conditions making it necessary to use shutter boards to avoid the trenches collapsing. the depth of the trenches varied from 2.0 to 2.5 meters throughout and this was dependent on the amount of rock that was found under the surface. At some points during the excavation there were large numbers of boulders and smaller rocks that had to be removed which did delay the process by approximately three days. once the excavation was complete, it was then time to lay the new drainage system. the new pipes that have been installed are 160mm in diameter, and there are three subsoil drains which have been strategically placed to catch both the subsurface water as well as any surface water runoff during the heavy rains. the main concern when designing the new drainage was to ensure that all the subsurface water that runs from the top of the fairway as well as from the forest on the left-hand side of the hole, was intercepted and re-directed into the wetland at the bottom of the fairway.
A feature of the new drainage system is the numerous rodding eyes that have been installed. As with any drainage system the pipes will, over time, become blocked with silt and other sediment and these rodding eyes will allow the pipes to be cleared of any blockages if necessary. You will also notice that a large amount of the rock that was found during excavation has been used to clad both sides of the river at the bottom of the fairway which certainly has added to the aesthetics of this hole and will also assist in reducing the erosion and undermining of the banks of the river.
once the pipes had been successfully installed the trenches were backfilled and the area was levelled, shaped and prepared for the new playing surface to be sprigged and seeded. the growing in period of the new fairway will be approximately 12 weeks and we are confident that the fairway will be open for play by the beginning of the peak season in december. Please note that these timeframes are our best estimates based on the information currently at hand, and any interim weather interruptions might delay the opening of the 9th hole, however we will continue to keep you updated in this regard.
I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the residents and members for their support and patience during this period of restoration and I look forward to seeing you all in the middle of the new 9th fairway in the upcoming months.
Happy Golfing!
Best Regards,
Bryan Coleman Golf Director
maximise Your game:
The Importance of Choosing the Right Golf Ball
Selecting the right golf ball is a crucial aspect of enhancing your performance on the course, yet it is often overlooked by many golfers. the right ball can significantly impact your game, especially when tailored to your swing speed and playing handicap. Understanding these factors can lead to improved distance, control, and overall enjoyment of the game.
titleist has long been recognised as the No. 1 ball in golf, trusted by both professionals and amateurs alike. their commitment to quality and performance is evident in their extensive range of golf balls, including the popular Pro V1 and Pro V1x models. these balls are designed to cater to various swing speeds and playing styles, ensuring that every golfer can find the perfect match for their game.
the Pro V1, for instance, is known for its exceptional feel and control, making it a favourite among players who prioritise precision around the greens. Conversely, the Pro V1x offers a higher launch and lower spin, ideal for those with faster swing speeds looking to maximise distance.
when it comes to selecting a golf ball, understanding your swing speed is paramount. Golfers with slower swing speeds often benefit from balls that provide a softer feel and greater distance, while those with faster swings may prefer balls that offer more spin and control. this is where the expertise of knowledgeable staff at golf stores, like Hit the tee Golf stores, becomes invaluable. they can help you navigate the myriad of choices available and recommend the best options based on your unique playing characteristics.
Hit the tee Golf stores boasts a wide selection of all the leading golf ball brands, including titleist, srixon, and Callaway. with titleist leading the way in quality and performance, golfers can trust that they are making a sound investment in their game.
In addition to titleist, exploring other brands like srixon and Callaway can also yield impressive results. Each brand has its unique technology and design philosophy, catering to different player preferences.
when visiting a golf store like Hit the tee, take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions and seek recommendations based on your specific needs. Stephen and his staff can provide insights into the latest technologies and how they can benefit your game.

“I guide my clients on how to fuel their bodies correctly to support their fitness goals.” Whether the focus is on weight management or muscle development, Pinkie offers personalised nutritional advice to ensure her clients’ metabolism stays active and their progress is sustainable
Pinkie gumede
A certified personal trainer known for her expertise in High-Intensity Interval training (HIIt) and strength training, Pinkie works with both men and women to help them achieve their fitness goals. With a passion for promoting longevity through muscle-building, her approach goes beyond the physical - it’s about cultivating lasting wellness and embracing a healthier lifestyle.
As someone deeply committed to the science of fitness, Pinkie believes that muscle is more than just a tool for strength or aesthetics. “Muscle is an organ of longevity,” she explains, emphasising that it plays a crucial role in how we age. As we get older, our muscle mass naturally declines, which can slow metabolism and impact overall health. Pinkie’s training programmes are designed not just to help clients look good but to keep their bodies functioning optimally as they age.
In her sessions, Pinkie focuses on tailored strengthbuilding exercises that help individuals regain or maintain muscle mass, improving their metabolism and promoting long-term vitality. she understands that everyone’s fitness journey is unique, which is why she takes the time to get to know her clients’ specific goals, whether they’re aiming for weight loss, muscle gain, or simply improving their overall fitness.
one of the key principles Pinkie incorporates into her coaching is the importance of nutrition. “Exercise alone isn’t enough,” she says. “I guide my clients on how to fuel their bodies correctly to support their fitness goals.” whether the focus is on weight management or muscle development, Pinkie offers personalised nutritional advice to ensure her clients’ metabolism stays active and their progress is sustainable.
Central to Pinkie’s philosophy is the 80/20 rule: the idea that 80% of success in fitness comes from proper nutrition, while 20% comes from exercise. this balanced approach ensures that her clients understand the importance of consistency without feeling overwhelmed. she also emphasises setting realistic goals, helping her clients embrace their fitness journey as a lifestyle change rather than a quick fix.
with her dynamic and supportive approach, Pinkie Gumede is more than just a trainer - she’s a partner in her clients’ long-term health and wellness.

the Secrets Unveiling cotswold
Over the last few months, The LionHeart Experience has been surveying the incredible estate, and they have had a few main objectives; the first of which, was to determine whether the endangered Spotted Ground Thrush was present.
The status of this really beautiful, grounddwelling bird is concerning. listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), estimates are that there is potentially less than 1 000 birds left in south Africa. this is mostly due to the absolute decimation of their natural habitat, forest, of which between 80 - 90% has been lost in south Africa. this is now fragmented, and the birds are using little patches of forest, wherever they can, to survive. deforestation is their biggest threat, among others. Many of these forests are in suburbia, which often have high numbers of roaming cats, and are very unsafe for them. we still don’t fully understand their movement in south Africa, but it appears that they breed in the coastal forests of the Eastern Cape in summer, and then they migrate north along the coast during winter.
we start getting records of them in the durban area and northwards from about April, and the last records were around september. these are their winter foraging suites and are critical to their survival. the lionHeart Experience is running a spotted Ground thrush Monitoring Project in order to better understand their movement and numbers, and in particular, to identify sites that they are using annually in order to better protect these sites, and in turn providing a better habitat for these birds.
We wanted to fi nd out if this bird was on Cotswold, we hoped it would be. In May 2024, I earmarked a site that I believed was a suitable spot to search for them. I sent our bird-ringer to check that site but they felt it was a bit rocky and opted for our second best site to set up the nets for the
thrush. on none of our walks had we seen the bird yet, so we really held out with our best hope on our ringing session, but we were left disappointed.
then in July, after doing a vervet monkey survey, I went into the forest again, and ended up at the very first site I had earmarked to search for the thrush. It just felt right, so I stood in the forest and waited quietly. I then heard the subtle sounds of scratching and flicking of the leaf litter. Could it be?! I knew that sound so well, and it was a tell-tale sign of a ground-dwelling bird searching for worms and goodies under the leaves, but there are a few forest species that do this, in particular the terrestrial brownbul (of which there are a good number in Cotswold forests), as well as robin-chats, and of course the spotted ground thrush. slowly, I moved a little closer towards the sound, making sure to not scare the bird, and I started scanning. My eyes picked up the leaves flicking, and then in-between the Dracaena aletriformis, there it was, a spotted ground thrush! BOOM!
A pure moment of elation! I have grown to really love this bird. It is so unique and always a treat to see. Cotswold downs now has the privilege of boasting being the winter home for at least one endangered bird. we now know that we have to increase efforts next winter to determine how many others may be in the forests, as well as increasing the effort to try to catch and fit them with rings.
the ringing of these birds helps us to understand where they are moving, how they are surviving, and whether the same individuals are returning to the same forests or if they are new individuals.
Cotswold downs not only boasts some gorgeous forests, but some equally gorgeous and just as important grasslands! Grasslands play a critical role in maintaining environmental balance. sadly, human activities such as agricultural expansion and urban development have decimated this lifegiving biome, leaving less than 3% of natural, pristine, healthy grassland intact. As grasslands disappear, so do the many species that depend on them, leading to a decline in regional biodiversity and
ecosystem health. we worked with laurie Koningkramer from the landscaping team on looking at a grassland restoration project in the estate, in order to optimise the biodiversity, and ensure the greatest health for these valuable systems. we have three sites that are ideal to focus on, and we have assisted in drawing out a rotational burning regime, which will provide increased biodiversity feedback, as well as looking at preventing bush encroachment. this is when grasslands start turning into thickets or forests. Grasslands are unique in that, among many other factors, they are teeming with biodiversity, play a significant role in carbon sequestration, prevent soil erosion and improve soil structure thereby enhancing its ability to retain water.
Another focus (and one which I have a personal bias towards) is the crowned eagle pair of Cotswold. Having been involved with dr shane McPherson and assisting in his research for over
a decade, we are heavily invested into the conservation of crowned eagles. I would actually like to write an article dedicated entirely to these birds at some point but, for now, this is just an exciting update on this special pair. As most will know, they successfully raised a juvenile, nicknamed ‘storm’, in 2023 and it appears she may now have already dispersed as we have not seen her for quite a few weeks on the estate and, in addition to this, the behaviour of the parents are indicating this too! On the 13 th of s eptember, we were able to confirm (after receiving report from Peter dexter) that they are, in fact, rebuilding the nest and planning to breed again this season! And, as seems to be this interesting pair’s unique nature, they have once again bounced around to a different nest site from last year! We are so excited to be on-site for this, and we will be very closely monitoring their progress. It would really be so valuable if we can get trackers fitted to the adult female and if possible the next juvenile. these birds are under great threat and persecution and this is valuable data that can assist in their conservation. we have just recently caught a bird in Zimbali and fitted the juvenile with a tracker, as we have had a devastating run with no confirmation of a chick reaching the wild in over 10 years, so we are doing our best to monitor their survival and see where and how we can help.
we have also been doing some night surveys on the estate to understand a few other species. one slightly cheeky member of management wanted us to throw in this photo of a really cool creature that we found in the rock face of the Nkutu river on one of these surveys.
t his is a harmless, tailless whip scorpion. t hey are arachnids, although not spiders or scorpions but in their own family called Amblypygi t hey love hiding in crevices and cracks in the forest, and they eat smaller insects or any little creature they can overpower. Even though they may be a bit creepy looking for some, many people actually have them as pets, Google it!
A last little note from our side is that summer is coming, and that means orchids! We will be doing some targeted surveys to see what other species are on-site, but we have already identified two very beautiful species on the estate. o ne is the pretty Disa woodii , the other, Eulophia horsfall and we have never, EVER seen a population of this magnitude anywhere in South Africa! Cotswold Downs really is providing the opportunity to protect such valuable species! Who knows what we will find next?!
